By that logic EQ is no UO which is still around.

Hi ! I’m having issues with the gw2 store (i want to buy 2 hot expansions, one for me and one for my gf). Sadly, i can’t see anything but text (no price, no image) and it seems even if i use the “add to cart” link, my cart ends up being empty. I’m using firefox (latest version) and have deactivated adblock and ghostery so i’m not sure what’s up.
I did notice a “en_IE” in the adress bar, maybe that’s the issue ?

What can i do ? Do i have to use IE to buy it ? xD

Solution for Mesmers in Keeps

Fenrir.6183

There’s a big difference to having a few people sweep for mesmers, which has been effective in the past, to the current state where we need 10-15 to sweep, hunt down, and kill them, to the future, where we will need everyone. It will just be to the point of ridiculousness. If you don’t think that’s terrible game mechanics, then I just can’t help you.

Still don’t see any problem here. If you want to keep an objective, secure it.
It might put a bigger emphasis on defense, which is great.

Why Do Pets Have Much More Health in PVE?

in WvW

Posted by: Fenrir.6183

Fenrir.6183

Except pets were buffed in pve resulting in more health. That’s why they have less life in wvw.
You could add 5 times their current health and they’d still die instantly anyway, in wvw (big fights) just keep your pet near you, in a non agressive state and order him to attack your target when needed (and use its utility)…you’ll still lose a lot of dps but hopefully, you’ll get some use of it instead of just seeing him get rekt in 1/8 of a second.

Your logic is faulty OP.

Let’s pretend I spent $60 for 500 hours of gameplay and I’d have to pay $50 for say 250 hours of gameplay.

Obviously the first game has more value than the second. But then what if the other games that I could get only give me 100 hours for $50.

The problem is, you can’t judge on absolutely value. You can only judge on comparative value.

And of course, you can judge on what comes out for free that you’d also be getting for that $50. Just as you’re including some stuff that came out after release in your first consideration.

You may not believe you can get is much, so it behooves you to wait. I believe I’ll get a lot of playtime. Whether it’s as much or not is not relevant. I’m happy to get 250 hours playtime out of $50. That would stretch my entertainment dollar quite far.

But you know, it’s all about perspective.

Aaah but you discount the QUALITY of these hours. Skyrim, for instance, gave me 150 hours of much more quality than the hours i spent in gw2. Grinding is pretty boring, farming for gold, karma trains, etc.
All in all, i’d value them about the same but Skyrim has more replayability (since the adventure is VERY different depending on the character you make and the choices you make…for instance my 2nd character never completed the main quest. I never fought a dragon with him. However, he was a very succesful thief ^^ )

The complaint is not about new players getting more. It’s about an expansion pack priced at a full game price when it will feature nowhere nearly enough content to justify that price.

Game Updates: Traits

Fenrir.6183

This update is a complete mess.
Not only are the trait changes totally uselessing, they also add some grind to the game making it even less fun than it was before.
Coupled with stupid PVE (you don’t look like you can design a boss fight and a lot of MMOs kick gw2’s kitten in that category), no love for the wvw and apparently believing your so-so pvp can be somewhat of an e-sport (believe me, it can’t), it just makes this game terrible.
I used to have fun in wvw but got a bit bored with it. I then realised there was nothing else in the game that really was any good. And the worst with all this is that you keep making meaningless patches like all these wardrobe and dyes changes while your game is slowly dying.
Well good job, you’re probably losing a lot of players with that stupid patch that was supposed to be a “feature” pack…lol.
Go back to design school guys.

Was this patch worth it?

@SpellOfIniquity…
Many people just plain refuse to take traits into account when looking at how and why skills are balanced.

@Everyone…
The other problem is that there is a general misguided sense of what a skill type is, and isn’t supposed to be. For example, a shout is supposed to be instant because all the other shouts are instant. Traps can only be triggered by enemies, so Healing Spring can not be classified as a Trap (a suggestion I made in a different thread was to make healing spring a atrap so it would benefit from trap traits), etc.

Well, by that misguided logic, lets change the Spirit of Nature, so its passive effect can only work once every 10 seconds, and only have a 35% chance to work, instead of working 100% of the time every second. It is a spirit after all, so it should work the same as the other spirits.

complain to me all you want that this thread is only about shouts. Your inability to understand how or why skills are balanced in the way they are is the true cancer that is spreading through the Ranger forums.

You people are silly. You don’t even realize your arguments have been proven invalid.

FINALLY! Someone gets it! (this comment has 10% more sarcasm than the quote its replying to!)

Quite the stupid post there… Other classes have low cooldown shouts with NO cast time. Why can’t we ?

A ranger is a druid ,scout, tracker, beastmaster, hunter and so on. Because of this rangers are the most debated class in fantasy RP.

I want to subscribe to this notion. Yesterday evening when pondering about the original fantasy ‘Holy Trinity’, consisting of the Warrior (melee), Huntsman (ranged) and Wizard (magic).

Trinity = Tank, healer, dps.

People already offer up that same complaint about spirits in WvW. It isn’t a bad idea when trying to reduce the amount of screen clutter, as it would reduce the amount of things on screen while offering the same effects that spirits currently have, minus having to trait for Spirits Unbound.

Pet’s only have a survival issue in large fights in WvW anyhow, where a lot of the game mechanics that were more than likely designed around smaller skirmishes don’t translate well.

Maybe that’s just a general performance issue for pets in WvW that needs to be handled, since it is a fairly global issue that affects much more than just the ranger class is all.

Problem is, most of wvw is large fights as roaming around makes no sense. I’ll give you small groups (capping camps, ninjaing towers and escorting dollies/scouting), but your idea does not solve anything anyway…instead of having to kill the spirits, they’ll just focus kill the pet in 1 second and you lose both some damage and your buffs. It would be even worse.

Proposal Overview
By now everyone is familiar with the word ‘Zoo’ and how it relates to the Ranger class. While the screen clutter is still there, the strategic value of all the minions has lessened because of the changes to tab targeting. Body blocking is still a large issue though and I am proposing we remove the spirits from the game.

snip

Removing Spirits would be a pretty big change to the class. Additionally, they are part of the “spirit” (sorry, had to) of the Ranger. I do think the idea to add it to the pet is interesting, though I’m not sure how it really makes sense (the pets aren’t the ones drawing from nature, it’s the Ranger).

Do you have any thoughts or ideas that wouldn’t necessarily remove them, but maybe help to lessen the body blocking as you said?

Battosai discussed with me the idea of turning the spirits into auras that are applied to your pet, and then the range of the effects are based on the location of your pet.

The same pet that dies in 1/10 of a second in wvw ?
We don’t need another skillset tied to the pets, we already have too much based on them as it is…

I main a ranger. I play most of my time in wvw (90+ %).

Here is my feedback on the ranger for wvw:

PETS:
Pets die really fast. They have useful abilities but their pathfinding is terrible and sometimes prevents them from using the abilities. The more people there are, the faster the pets die and thus, the less we have damage and abilities.
Either improve the pathfinding, upgrade their HP or make their stats scale with the ranger’s stats.
That or give us an option to perma stow them and get a boost to our stats.
Another thing that would be really fun and useful: an ability to incarnate the pet while having the character still vulnerable. You possess it and can run around with it, use its abilities but your character can be killed while doing so.

SHOUTS:
Our shouts are near useless in wvw, even when traited and using rune of the soldier. I tried a shout build and while it CAN be effective, the fact that it does way less than a warrior’s shout build makes it useless. This could be changed if at least one of our shouts gave some utility or removed a condition, similar to the warrior shouts.
Search and rescue has never worked for me even once, i’ve stopped trying to use it.
Guard is useless and mostly used because of the smaller cooldown on it. It serves no purpose at all other than getting those swiftness/fury buffs (and potential condi removal).

SPIRITS:
Spirits are really lackluster in wvw. They die even faster than pets since you can’t control them at all, have a chance to trigger an effect and need heavy trait investment to even be considered. Basically they are banners that can die and sometimes don’t give a buff. Spirit of Nature is particularly useless when it could and should be pretty strong. It dies almost instantly, you can’t rez anyone with it because of the cast animation that occurs when you try to, giving enough time for opponents to kill it, and obviously, no one gets that great healing since he’s dying so fast.
Compare them to banners and you see why this is an issue.
This could be avoided by granting the spirits more health (still have them killable but nowhere near as easily) and upgrading the trigger chance to 50 (untraited) / 100%.

WEAPONS:
Most weapon skills are ok in my opinion and they complement each other. However, since we have the pet, the skills do much less damage than other classes’s weapon skills. If i compare the greatsword damage to the hammer of guardian or warrior, those 2 grant more CC, much more damage and utility as well.
An upgrade to damage on Greatsword (#1, #3) and mainhand axe (mainly #1) seems appropriate.
Mainhand axe would be perfect if the bounce occured even if there wasn’t 3 targets (=> bounced back to previous target). It would make it a stronger weapon against solo/duo enemies and stay the same vs the rest.
Torch, sword, dagger, offhand axe, shortbow and longbow feel pretty good and have the right skills. They all have a different purpose and i have had no issue with those.

And make entangle unblockable. The tooltip says it is, but it really isn’t.

The waypoints really kill the purpose of mounts…in other games there is much more focus on actually moving your character around the maps rather than instantly teleporting, so mounts make sense… In gw2,not so much.

I repeat: the Ranger will not get better until the pet situation is fixed.

What i meant is…it can’t be fixed. It’s a game engine issue and it would require a lot of work…much more than they can do since it could cause major bugs to the rest of the game. I haven’t seen the code of course but i’m pretty sure it’s much more difficult than most people believe it would be.

Not really. Since you get the choice to either have the pet or get a stat boost, it’s a class mechanic.
Either have a pet that does damage, provides utility and can tank (in pve, ofc, not wvw or pvp) or get a stat boost. Not every class needs to be able to switch to different weapon skills sets like the elementalist.

Problem with the “pet AI” is that it mostly comes from game mechanics. The pathfinding is one of the worst i’ve seen in a mmorpg so far. The skills mechanics are a problem as well since most of them can’t be used without a target or without attacking. This makes the pet run toward an opponent rather than actually casting his ability.

Because melee is always going to be better than ranged and our only other melee weapon makes combining raw DPS and dodging/kiting impossible because it roots you on the autoattack. GS looks good because we have no other alternatives, not because it actually is good. Try the GS on the warrior or Guardian and you’ll see what a “good” GS feels like.

Guardian GS isn’t as good as ranger GS imo.
I also agree on the stow pet thing…it would give us a chance to be more useful in situations where the pet dies too easily. Maybe put a timer on it so we can’t switch too often ?

I have just one request, even though I know that for the forum population – which seems extremely specialized compared to the general playerbase ingame – this is going to be highly unpopular:

Please don’t base balancing decisions on sPvP.

It is a much too specialized and “quirky” game mode. It doesn’t reflect the kind of combat which comes up in both WvW and PvE, it lacks anti-structure combat, it lacks logistics, it has it’s own set of items and rules. It’s not at all a representative game mode, and should be last-priority (IMO) behind PvE, smallscale (dungeon) PvE, WvW combat and WvW material warfare (no specific order between those).

I understand that it often seems on the forums that sPvP is the game mode or something. But ingame it really doesn’t feel like many players actually play sPvP. And it worries me that this playerbase seems to “camp the forums”, so to say, making the forum opinion seems drastically different from what is experienced ingame when talking to players.

Please don’t base balance in such a vocal minority.

What you just said is like someone whom only does SPvP coming to the forums and saying the same thing but changing where you put PvE and WvW with SPvP and TPvP.

Also you should take the time to read some of the idea’s us SPvP players are putting forward, if you look closely they greatly increase viability of Rangers in both PvE and WvW. Allot of us Ranger’s whom play SPvP have spent allot of time in both WvW and PvE. Speaking from personal exp, I’ve done more WvW then I have SPvP………

Edit: Also you rarely ever see the balance dev’s taking any idea’s or input from the player base and using them. Only input I’ve seen them take are things like make Spirit’s viable. Pet’s do to much damage. Normally they look at what people think and come up with there own ideas.

Except less people play pvp than the rest of the game.

You should re-read what I suggest – by giving up on gs evade on #1, you’re getting evades on both #3 and #4(counter-attack is more of a self-stun when it happens right now). Also, you still get the same duration on block, I think you didnt really read/understand and stopped at what you dislike, see the full picture.

Spamming #1 for random evades is not what I consider a good design, however 2 evades on demand would be very welcome, and I feel it is the direction the game have to go for every mode, less random, spammy and passive stuff, dont you agree?

(I edited my post to mention your opinion about GS#1)

Switch to sword if you want “on demand” evade. GS is one of the best ranger weapons right now…

My own patch-note – part1: power weapon skills

From a spvp perspective.

GS :

  1. Remove evade from 3rd strike, add opening strike to ur pet
  2. If the target is dazed/stunned, will do a short knock-down, slight radius buff
  3. Add a short-evade
  4. Speed-up and add evade to the counter-attack frame
  5. Xplo finisher

You see, this is the problem with pvpers trying to come up with balance ideas.
The greastsword is the only perfect weapon for wvw right now. The evade from #1 saved me a lot of time, same as the long blocking from #4.

Not 2 traps, 1 trap, muddy terrain and entangle, axe pull and also a trait that means any opponent with less than 50% life you hit gets crippled. That’s pretty good imo.
And a ranger with this build is pretty resilient, has access to stability, can block and evade through GS skills.
In my opinion it does match the utility of other classes…i would not say it is better than other classes, and obviously you are going to want a number of guardians and warriors. But in my opinion having several rangers with this build does provide a plus for your group. That’s all i’ve been trying to expose here.

And yeah, i was merely speaking of my characters to say i have played other classes in wvw at lvl 80 knowing them and not just ranger. Anyone can have all the classes at 80, if you don’t play them in wvw, it’s not relevant.

I play a warrior, dude… shout build with hammer/sword warhorn. I know the class, and it’s true i didn’t mention the warhorn skill because it truly isn’t always available whereas the slot skills are whatever weapon you’re using. So yeah, they could end up removing them all, it still does not mean they will do it INSTANTLY. In fact, they don’t. They have to see it, there’s no way to prevent immobilization before seeing it. Rangers also have 2 pets and both can apply immobilize or chill for instance. Sure, that’s nowhere near as reliable as the utility skills but still factors in.

Also, usually those skills are used when the opponents have already used their stability.

I guess that in optimal dream theory, the warriors would remove them right away and it would have no effect. However, i have found that those skills greatly help and effectively cuts enemy tails / prevents enemies from getting to a point easily.
Are we talking about the game or just theorycrafting ? I’m talking about game experience on wvw in a T1 server here, not just throwing ideas around. I’ve played on that server since day one and mostly do wvw.
I have a 80 warrior, 80 ranger and 80 thief which i all played in wvw and i’m also leveling a guardian and a necromancer right now. I do agree i don’t know 100% of every class…but then again, not a lot of people do. I, however, know the ranger very well.

Also, not all warriors have their warhorns ready all the time, i do believe most of them also use a hammer for that “GREAT DPS” i keep hearing about. Weapon swap has a cooldown, you know. The skills i talked about are available no matter what weapon set you use.

I love how people keep saying hammer warrior is there for CC. When most CC is done by other professions through ranged aoe. I have almost 3000 hours on a warrior and can tell you that Ranger Front trap, Spike Trap with ground targeting and entagle are way more effective at CC an enemy zerg than anything warrior has.

Further more Static field, frozen ground on an Ele way better than what the hammer does.

Gurdian Walls anyone Spectral wall much better.

People who think warrior CC is best at CCing enemy zergs are just simply don’t know about what other professions can do.

It’s not just earthshaker that is CC. Warriors have hammer F1, 3, 4, 5 as well as flurry on sword and cripple on 2. All are a mix of hard and soft CC. Also having played a trap ranger in zergs, I can assure you without max condi duration, the soft CC you get from traps really doesn’t do much, especially when you have a melee train running minus condi duration food, with warrior’s warhorn cleansing soft CC, it just doesn’t work. That’s the main reason I ditched traps, without maximum condi duration soft CC isn’t effective.

The food is only minus 40%. With my current build, i get 50%, if i add the + 40% food to negate the minus food it means it’s still 50%. Which means 3s of cripple/immobilize. And yeah, there are warriors shouting. That removes 1 to 2 conditions… Traps / muddy terrain / entangle apply 2 (immobilize + cripple, bleeding for spike). So each warrior which usually only has 2 shouts (to still retain stability+stun break) can’t remove the condi put up by a ranger. It’s simple… 1 vs 1. You can’t consider a whole zerg against ONE ranger. If you have several rangers running my build, your warriors won’t be able to remove all those conditions. Also, if they do, they’ll still have the necros/other classes conditions such as bleeding, poison, burning, torment, confusion, etc.
What’s even more important is the time your opponents lose by being immobilized. Even if it’s a second or less, they’ll lose valuable time where their commander still runs and end up being a bit late => means they can be killed more easily.

Why do wvw guilds hate rangers?

to steer us back on topic, away from fantasy and laboratory type testing environments where your target remains still without dodges, blocks, protection, etc., i will repeat the original question – why do WvW guilds hate rangers? *hint: it’s not because the leaders of these guilds are unaware of amazing and effective prof nuances known only to a handful of elite rangers!

please remain on-topic, thanks!

No, it’s not. But it’s because MOST rangers don’t know those nuances that MOST rangers actually suck. Which is why guilds don’t like them. I don’t think any good guild would be opposed to a player going ranger if he can actually prove them he’s useful in their guild as a ranger. And rangers can assuredly be useful…not the same way a warrior is, not the same way a guardian, necro are. But in its own way.
So there, you have your answer.

I didn’t ask the question I just repeated it to steer us back on topic. I and many others have already established why rangers are outperformed in every aspect of gvg and gvz by every other prof except maybe engie, assuming equal skill and good builds.

You can prove yourself and be the best ranger you can be. This is what I’m actually assuming when making my judgment. The results pale in comparison to what other profs can do.

Well then if you have “established” it, please grant us your superb logic in doing so ?
You are a fool by underestimating a whole profession when you clearly don’t play it yourself. Again, no other profession comes close to ranger when it comes to immobilizing/crippling the enemies. But please, enlighten us with your godly knowledge !

For the record, i run spike trap + signet of the wild + muddy terrain + entangle with condi duration runes. I apply 3 sec of cripple with both spike trap and muddy terrain. Both of those also immobilize those that are in it. Spike trap and Entangle are unblockable. Entangle immobilizes a lot of enemies, even if they do remove it fast, it separates them from their zerg/group/whatever you want to call it. And that’s when the warriors can stun them and everyone kills them.
This is a very good thing as, if they ran away, you would have had much more trouble killing them when they came back. I don’t know what guild you are in, or what server you play on…but if you don’t care about immobilize/chill/cripple…then you are pretty much making a fool of yourself on this thread, buddy.

edit: here’s a build, in case you’re wondering.

I usually don’t use the + 40% condi food but i put it in just to show you what we can do. 4 sec of cripple instead of the 3 i usually get… and don’t forget the immobilize, the chill/immobilize from the pets and the fact that we actually do some pretty good damage with GS (maul does around 5k crits) and the axe pull is awesome as well.

Is WvW really a war between worlds?

Backdoors were great in warhammer online, not sure why we don’t have some here…
I like all of your ideas, would definitely improve the wvw experience…

For blobbing (both PvE and WvW):
Whatever, here you can basically run whatever you want…Put on full carrion gear and use power weapons, bear, full signets without trait and 14/14/14/14/14…it doesn’t matter…

That would just mean being a rallybot though.

I wouldn’t use spirit without traiting, i’ve tried..

It sucks

The spec that will benefit the most is the 30 Marksman builds, because entangle is blah really now a days (thieves/warriors ignore it basically) and you wouldn’t use Nature’s Spirit, so that leaves Rampage as One….

Eh ? No it does not. It’s actually pretty good, can revive a lot of people (since you can use the active several times) and grants a nice health regen. I use it sometimes in wvw, it can revive a lord and so, provides the same kind of utility a warrior banner does.

Also, in wvw, entangle is much better than RaO. Not everyone talks about pvp, you know…actually i’m pretty sure much more people play wvw than pvp (at least on my server).

Is Ranger visually boring to play?

Try sword/torch (sword #3 is visually nice).
And greatsword… (maul has a nice effect)

I agree…if you don’t have 30 points in Marksman you don’t use (ie activate) it. That doesn’t mean it’s not up in the slot…
In a healing power build for instance, it can give up to 150 hp regen.
So yeah, all power builds probably have this one for the stability and other bubilds can use it as well for the health regen.
I guess i misread your message and thought you meant use as in have it in your skills…

Haven’t seen this issue but i haven’t used sic’em a lot, especially in pvp/wvw so, can’t really say.
But it seemed to work ok when i used it.

Any Viable Trap Master Builds Still Around?

You mean a condition build which happens to use traps ?
Depends what your goal is (pvp, wvw or pve) but try this one:

You could use this as a base and modify it based on your needs.

If i’m reading it correctly, all the passive does is allow the actives of our Signets to be used by us, which we normally don’t use anyway, but if you’re about to die..you pop that ability, your pet then resses you really fast and when you pop back up, you don’t have your signets actives usable (but the passives would still work with ya)

Which we don’t use ? Signet of the wild has to be one of the most used skills…and with the trait it gives stability. No idea what you’re talking about…
