My buddies and I started playing SWTOR, and the UI is fantastic….and it was released that way. Also, they don’t allow mods either. I can move/resize my windows, customize my hotbar(s), and hide UI elements that I don’t want to see.
Actually it wasn’t released that way. UI customisation was added in patch “1.2.0 Legacy” along with the bulk of the legacy system.
But yes, some greater control over the UI would be nice and I would really like to be able to move the weapon skills to different slots.
Is it too hard? Respect the awesome work

Smaller team, actually. And the length was my own desire to get as many ideas as I could in there. I spent several months pulling 16 hour days and a couple weeks where I did a couple 36 hour stretches, went home, slept and came back and did it again. No one else wanted me to do that. In fact those sort of crazy hours are discouraged at ArenaNet. I did that because I freeking love what I do and wanted this release to be the best thing ever. Turns out I pushed too hard to get those new mechanics in there and I’m being told here over and over that all that work was wasted and it’s making people miserable. I’ve learned my lesson. Won’t happen again! And for that, my family thanks you!
Aw man, I just had to reply to this. Please don’t think that the attitudes of those complaining on the forum apply to everyone. I spent the entire evening yesterday playing SAB and I really enjoyed it. There were people in my guild still trying tribulation mode at midnight, and guild chat has been full of talk about how it’s the most awesome update so far. Also, I think the size of the levels is awesome. It’s almost like a stand-alone game.
I will be spending as much of the weekend as I can playing more SAB!
I have one complaint, which is that I was trying to play in a group with someone and we couldn’t get into the same overflow.
Aside from that we had a lot of fun with the new content. I like this patch!
Oh and being able to do Scarlet’s instance with just the 2 of us was awesome.
Rangers are terrible. I hugely regret going for a ranger main but I’ve put so much into it I can’t really re-roll now. However at the same time, I just don’t want to play on it any more. The pets are vile, the damage and utility is bad, they’re very limited in their options and after getting other classes to higher levels the ranger just feels useless and boring. Not only that, but there’s discrimination against rangers from other players. I wish I’d stuck with my beta plan of making a mesmer main.
I’m getting really, really sick of the CoF event. The timer is just too short. Make them stay uncontested for 6 hours or something, please.
Doesn’t answer my question. Why was a working system changed into a less transparent system hammering in your face you’re poor?
In what way is it a less transparent system?
Adding a few zero’s to all the numbers doesn’t make me any more or less poor. The inflation in GW1 was just silly, I can only assume they wanted to avoid repeating it.
Instead of the current copper > silver > gold you had gold > platinum > ecto’s. Copper and silver were essentially worthless and most trading was done using items as an improvised currency. The system ended up being rather ridiculous.
(edited by Kana.6793)
Economic question because I think this ties in with the TP but no clue.
What happened to platinum coins? Was there really a reason to retire GW1’s currency system and adopt WoW’s?
My hunch:
- gold should be the most valuable and 1gp should be really valuable.
- 10 000cp equals 1gp while 1000gp equals 1plat. For finetuning drops and TP values a plat has 10 times less power.
- ancient dragons need to eat gold and platinum to awaken, therefore destroying a massive amount of the old currency base
however this makes for a feeling that people don’t have money at all. I think it would have been a better idea to make 10plat the same value as a current 1gp. It maintains the old currency system, people don’t feel nearly as poor and it isn’t a blatant rip off of the game we all try to avoid.Am I correct or is there another reason?
This is taking the WoW clone stuff a tad far. That currency system is hardly an invention of Blizzard. In the UK our coins are copper coloured, silver coloured and the most valuable is gold coloured. It’s been this way for a very long time.
GW1 is not the originator of the copper, silver, gold, platinum system in gaming either. It’s an old staple of D&D and it’s based on UK coinage.
There’s quite a lot of PVE content in place already and more will be added.
Ankittenhe only one who finds it ridiculous that, without the forums, I wouldn’t even know about dungeons because they’re basically out of my way?
Whenever you get to a level which means you can enter a new dungeon you get an in-game mail about it which tells you about the dungeon and shows you where it is on the map. You say you’re in the high 30’s, in that case you will have had mail about Ascalonian Catacombs already.
What kind of data do you expect to get? How many people (are planning to) quit? Is kind of worthless if you don’t know how many players are still playing and how many new players join the game…
Plus normally if people quit a game they don’t hang about on the forums so they won’t be replying anyway. You can’t get any accurate data like this and what is the point of attempting to gather it anyway? The only people who need to know this kind of thing already have access to the server data.
No, dungeon gear/weapons should not be tradeable. They’re a symbol of your accomplishment.
If you can afford to buy it, you deserve it no less than someone who is skilled enough to find one.
Couldn’t disagree more. If you can afford to buy it, get Foefire’s Essence or something like that.
What were you guys doing on GW1 that gave you all this freedom and choice you keep talking about? In my alliance all anyone did was vaettir farm with a build from pvxwiki and run speed clears, also with builds from pvxwiki. If someone tried to take a build other than the one they were told to take they weren’t allowed to go.
As for the OP’s question. I played GW1 and one friend did too. We’re still playing GW2. The other friends I started playing GW2 with mostly quit for WoW as soon as MoP was released (they said the lack of gear is boring) and a few stopped playing MMO’s entirely.
Desolation is good. LA overflows most of the time, Orr temples regularly uncontested (even seen people doing the gates of Arah event at 1am).
They need to add something like the “Reset all Instances” function in WoW.
I really enjoyed the puzzle’s when they were new, but after I’ve done them once I can’t really be bothered to repeat them. It’s not a puzzle any more after I’ve finished it once. Adding more rewards to it wouldn’t make a difference to me, I still couldn’t see myself being bothered to go back.
When they add some new ones I’ll be all over those ^^ The only one I did enjoy repeating was the clocktower – that thing is just awesome.
Also, the reward for doing a JP is successfully completing it, I wouldn’t care if they removed the chests entirely.
Not true that no-one goes to the JP’s at 80 either, I know a bunch who have been doing them all, filling out the achievement tab.
Although I agree the older dungeons aren’t that much fun, turning them into raids is not the answer. Many if us left wow because of how much raids were work instead of fun.
If you miss them/want them so much, panda land is that way —->
Uuh, it doesn’t neccessarily have anything to do with WoW. GW1 had challenging dungeons with a party size larger than 5. Look up Elite Areas such as Fissure of Woe and Domain of Anguish. There’s no reason why the OP’s proposed dungeons shouldn’t exist in GW2.
I would love to see dungeons with a larger party size and more challenging and interesting mechanics.
Oh come on, really?
No chance is not the fairest solution but if you do it right it can be fairer than it is. They could have atleast handed out rewards worth a minimum of XX gold from the chests.
ExampleMinimum reward from chest worth: 50 gold
Maximum reward from chest: 400 gold
That would have been fairer. Some only got items worth a few silvers or 2-3 gold.
You got the same chance as people who looted the proper chest. Most people got exotics worth around 2g.

Lack of players in LA? What? We get LA overflows all the time. The fractal levels make it hard to get a group of the right level yes, but there’s no shortage of LFG spam for them. I’ve also been pugging non-fractal dungeons almost every day.
As for WvW, we’ve dropped in rankings a lot lately and it looks like we’re going to keep going down. We lost some big pvp guilds to higher tier servers and then KISS moved to a US server. KISS have now returned however. People aren’t bothering with WvW so much at the moment because the serious guilds are gone and we just get roflstomped.
It looks awesome. Congratulations
Also, I know a bunch of people who are currently distracted with AC3, Planetside 2 and Far Cry 3. They haven’t quit GW2, but they are currently playing less since they don’t have time to play all the games every day. Everyone’s looking forward to Winter’s Day though.
Last night I was halfway through SE explorable when the new build available message popped up. Just as I was about to groan and complain in party chat I noticed that this time it said that the game would restart in 3 hours. My whole party were delighted to see that and we were able to finish our run.
Thanks for extending the time!
LA has overflows everytime I log on to Gunnar’s Hold. Our proper LA has constant LFG spam for fractals and other dungeons.
Levelling alts – it’s not as crowded as it was just after launch, but the massive zergs everywhere were obviously not going to continue forever. There are still people around though.
The bugs aren’t that bad, I’ve seen far worse in my years of gaming. Besides, they have separate teams anyway.
I want new content.
Indeed. And more recently, SWTOR. That was in a far worse state than GW2 in the first few months. This has been a very smooth launch overall.
You obviously weren’t there for the ToR launch so please don’t state something when you weren’t there or build lies because ToR had an incredibly smooth launch. Was there for Beta, early access launch and day 1 and beyond of launch. The servers never crashed. Had no lag issues. Didn’t see any game breaking bugs or issues. No rubber banding. Able to do 99% of the quests. No account issues etc.
So please do tell how ToR was in far worse shape. I won’t deny there were bugs but which game doesn’t at launch? GW2 had just as many but GW2 was far worse. Tons of bots to add to the mix too. Overall GW2 wasn’t a bad launch though but to say ToR was far worse shows you weren’t there for launch. If YOU had issues then that was just you. Also class balances in GW2 are horrible and has been since launch. ToR’s wasn’t even close to out of balance as GW2 is.
The only other smooth launch was Rift.
I was in the SWTOR beta and I started playing during pre-order access. The framerate spiked all over the place even on high end systems, there were huge threads about the strange drops in FPS when entering warzones. There was an issue with the game rendering stuttering (easily demonstrated by jumping and opening your bags – this caused you to hang in mid air momentarily). There were memory leak issues after playing for long sessions, many threads about BSOD’s. There were gamebreaking bugs in the operations – for example, the pylons becoming unlickable resulting in that boss sometimes being impossible to complete, the Soa fight had many bugs most notably the one where the floor didn’t appear meaning you couldn’t fight him. There was a bug at Gharj which randomly killed everyone in the operation. They also had long maintenance downtime, sometimes multiple times a week. There were broken Ilum dailies. Some of the class quests couldn’t be completed. As for class balance, they had entire warzones containing only sorcerers.
And here is a screenshot of Soa with his floor missing, taken in January.

people calling this a buggy mess must be very new to MMO’s …
I think back to the first few months of Everquest 1, and 2.. DOAC, WoW, Lineage2, AoC, Vanguard, WAR… this launch has been remarkably solid and bug free.
Indeed. And more recently, SWTOR. That was in a far worse state than GW2 in the first few months. This has been a very smooth launch overall.
I think the shallow power curve is a good compromise. I have no problem at all with level cap increases being introduced with expansions. Levelling is very fast in this game and exotics are easy to get.
I also think it’s just logical to design a game for the people who play it regularly rather than people who don’t play for a year.
And by the way, when I started playing GW1 it was together with a friend who hadn’t played it for ages. When we started playing he was muttering about skills having been changed and his build not working anymore.
Any time you take a long break from something you will be out of date.
Totally agree buying skins is what GW was about but 119gold is just daft really for rares and only one set of stats seems a bit over the top to me, the first two tiers are just right, the third is pretty insane…
20 gold would be more than enough for it in my opinion especially as most tier 3 cultural isn’t all that special anyway…
It feels like a lot of rewards in this game have lost the plot…
The stats don’t matter, you’re meant to transmute it. You’re paying for the skin. And 119g is perfectly fine for T3. Think of Vabbian armour in GW1. As for whether it looks special or not, that’s entirely a matter of personal taste.
It should not be cheaper, but it should be a skin that you can generate from the vendor as many times as you like once you’ve paid to unlock it. Similar to the HoM items.
I don’t think GW2 is exactly WoW again, just that they are introducing the one thing about WoW that made my friends and I want to stop playing it.
continual, never-ending, limitless “progression” in the form of your attacks hitting for 1012 damage instead of 1004 damage. Hold on to your hats guys, next month we’re releasing a new item that lets you do 1018 damage!
I love the trappings of MMOs, I love talking in guild chat, going out and doing stuff together, that feeling of teamwork and camaraderie that you only really get in an MMO, but I never wanted that type of regressive and redundant “progression” mechanic, and the reason I went and bought GW2 rather than any of the dozens of other MMOs out there is because it DIDNT have it.
Now that it’s been added, most of my guild has quit. Of those that are left, all they want to do is run Fractals over and over and over. All they talk about is Ascended gear and what DPS they now have. The fun, for me, is lost.
Aaah, I see. That sucks, but if you enjoy the rest of the game you should probably find a new guild.
Since the fractals have been added group activities in my guild have been doing fractals, doing old dungeons, keg brawling, doing jumping puzzles, levelling alts together, messing about on the diving board in LA and helping people get map completion stuff in WvW – all while chatting on mumble. Some people have Ascended backpieces and rings, but I haven’t seen anyone talk about them other than the initial “yay I got my [link]”.
It sounds as if you’re still locked into the Gear Grind mentality. I hope you break out of it one day.
I’ve never raided to grind gear. I like raiding itself. I stopped playing WoW because the raids are too easy now and I was bored. I like GW2 dungeons because there are circles that give you 2 seconds to move before they one shot you.
What on Earth? Firstly, please don’t try to speak for everyone. You say “All of us, myself included, have stopped playing our MMOs because we were sick and tired of “Vertical Progression”.” and “in the end everyone feels cheated and hateful towards their old MMOs” – this is not why I stopped playing my previous MMO and I don’t feel cheated or hateful towards it at all. I have a lot of good memories of fun times raiding with my friends and guild.
Secondly, no this is not WoW all over again. GW2 is nothing like WoW.
Thirdly, people dying at their computers and stabbing each other because of gear progression is most definately not “frighteningly common”. These people have mental illnesses. If you would stab someone over a game, you would most likely still end up stabbing someone even if the game never existed.
Yes I would recommend GW2 to a friend, it’s very good.
I don’t know what you’re talking about, in exotic gear I 2 shot normal mobs in low level areas. The downlevelling is too weak in some areas, it makes the areas too easy and boring.
Downlevelling and overall difficulty was a lot better in BWE1. Dunno why they nerfed it like this.
They’re a nice addition and very reasonably priced too.
Here it is Sunday 11:55pm, Lion’s Arch is in overflow, there’s a queue for WvW and my guild has 40+ people online
Game is busting at the seams popular.
go anywhere else but LA. 200 people on a server isn’t much. Thats all it takes to make LA go overflow.
But we have already established GW2 has more people playing than Black Ops 2 (PC) and Diablo 3 looking at data from two separate data sets (Steam and Xfire). What more do people want?
The people that are truly upset with the addition of the rings and backpack gear are looking for validation of their feelings. “I’m upset, therefore everyone must be upset, therefore everyone has stopped playing, therefore the game is dying!”
The others are paid game-bashers just riding on the hurt feelings of those players.
The game is soaring in popularity, this upsets some people.
Why isnt this idiot being moderated and infracted for trolling ?
Because he is a fanboy of the new grindpolicy.
What grind? Seriously, this game has NO grinds compared to other MMO’s. It has NO gear threadmill worth mentioning. And still people keep referring to this as a WoW clone. I seriously doubt those players played WoW on a raiding level, where a tedious grind every day was required to be even prepared).
This game is very easy going, you can get by perfectly without 1 serious grind.
You can do grinds (for legendaries for example) but that’s your own choice: it’s optional.
Yeah, I don’t know where they’re getting this WoW clone stuff from. GW2 is nothing like WoW. And you’re right about the raid preparation.
I don’t see Anet making us rep grind daily quests, fly in circles picking herbs and farming mats for stat buff food for hours every day, do the profession daily quests before we can even buy the good gem recipes etc – all before they let us into the fractals. Oh and of course we should preferably level a full set of alts in order to max all crafting professions so we can make our own enchantments, flasks, spellthread, belt buckles etc.
Kitten, I’ve done fractal level 1 with a level 9 player in the group (character level 9, not fractal level).
As for population, there are people all over the place on Gunnar’s Hold. I logged into WoW last night (for the first time in over a year – they sent me 10 days free to try out MoP). It was peak time and there were 14 people in Orgrimmar on my server, which is still marked as medium pop.
(edited by Kana.6793)
Welcome to the game! I also think this is the best MMO around at the moment. Enjoy your levelling, Tyria is an awesome place to explore
800h… omg.
i see now how some people can possibly have full map completion + being fractal 20 already.
wow. astounding.
i guess the fractals where designed for players in your category. (not saying you in particular, but people as dedicated as you).if you can do 1 dungeon “story” mode a week to help the casuals who cant do their story mode… that would be very nice of you
I have been helping out guild members who need to get story modes and lower level fractals done. Usually I pug random explorable modes quite often when I see people looking for a few more, because I really enjoy dungeons and they’re a much more fun way to make gold than farming. I’ve pugged level 1 &2 fractals, but I’m a bit wary of the higher ones without a guild group since voice comms make a big difference.
I’ll try to fit in the odd story pug when there’s nothing going on in the guild.
I do appreciate it can be annoying to find a group for certain dungeons if you’re pugging and there’s no dungeon finder around. It has been very hard to get a group for CoE explorable, for example. Most people seem to go for TA and CoF explorable.
And yes, I love the fractals! The boss fights are a lot more interesting than the ones in the old dungeons. Plus not only do you get a random set of fractals each time, but each fractal has multiple paths! The variety, plus constant difficulty increases is an amazing idea. I’m really looking forward to them adding new fractals to the instance.

I’m a new player too and today is the first day i checked out this forum and is really overwhelming. Constant hate posts that game + Anet sucks. I remember all the hype from promoting the video and friends that played on launch were like “omg best game ever” and now this.
I play it for 1 week but so far i’m satisfied with it. Does this game have future ?
I have nearly 800 hours of played time on GW2 and I’m still enjoying it. I briefly played my previous MMO’s recently and they feel static, lifeless and very old and out of date compared to GW2.
As long as you personally are enjoying it, keep playing. You certainly aren’t the only one who likes the game.
As long as you are enjoying playing the game, then you should stick with it. It’s a really good game and very refreshing after playing other older MMO’s on the market.
The forum community doesn’t bear much similarity to anything I’ve seen in game and if you’re new to GW2 my advice would be to stay off the forums and enjoy exploring the game.
If you need help with anything, the wiki covers pretty much any question you’d need to ask. You can also open the wiki quickly by typing /wiki in-game.
MMO forums are well known for being fonts of negativity and complaining and I wouldn’t put too much stock in the forum attitude. For example, WoW is 8 years old now. According to their forums, the game has been “dying” for most of that time.
If you follow the link you will see this.
“This message was sent to %To_Email%. You are receiving this message because you signed up to receive Guild Wars 2 newsletters. To unsubscribe, click here. Feel free to contact customer support on support.guildwars2.com.”You didn’t get the email because you chose not to subscribe to the newsletter.
The link to the survey is there, why not take it if you feel left out of something you chose not to be a part of?Good point. I probably unticked that as usally that means being spammed with advertising for other games as well or offers in the CashShop like LoTRO spammed my mail every week.
Thought important things like surveys wasn’t considered that and would go out to all customers but maybe You are right. So now i need to figure out how to tick that again so i get stuff like surveys at least.
No, if you’ve said you don’t want emails they’re not allowed to send you anything that isn’t directly related to your purchase – receipts etc. Spam laws about emails are pretty strict.
I received a survey and I am signed up for the email newsletter.
(edited by Kana.6793)
OP, this forum is pretty similar to the D3 forums. If you found the D3 forums detrimental to your enjoyment of the game then I strongly suggest you stick to discussing GW2 in-game and on your guild’s private forum.
By the sounds of it you’ll enjoy the game a lot more that way!
It’s a tad depressing around here – I prefer the in-game discussions.
Still playing every day, same as usual.
Having played WoW for 5 years and GW1 alongside it – this game is not a WoW clone. It really doesn’t play the same at all.
GW1 was made by people who worked on Warcraft and Diablo. GW1 is like a combination of parts of Warcraft and Diablo with a with a hefty dose of Anet’s own style and ideas. The end result was a very good, unique co-op game.
GW2 is a combination of GW1 and every MMO to date with Anet’s style and ideas added to it. I think in a few years when people look back after some more content patches and expansions they will see the end result will be a very good, unique MMO.
Did anyone miss this on the WvW portion?
“new reward progression”
That’s right, new reward PROGRESSION in WvW. More tread mill please.
Also changing up PvP, I bet with MORE Progression. Can’t get enough tread mill in this non-tediouis, no tread mill game.
Will they ever face the fact no matter how much they try, how much pressure is put on them to do so, they will NEVER take WoW gear tread mill enthuasiasts away from WoW?
If you have been watching the WvW forums over the last few months you will have seen a huge number of posts asking for DAOC style progression for WvW. Nothing to do with WoW or gear treadmills.
Anyway, looking forward to new fractals!
They’ve said all along there will be a series of free content patches and later there will be a paid full size expansion, just as for GW1.
Last week a day in LA was largely:
LF1M CoF path 1 & 2
LFG TA any path
LFg CoF
lvl 80 full exo LFG AC
LF2M Arah no noobs
LFG TA
LF2M CoF speed run 80 only
LFG arah
Not really much difference. It’s just what happens when you lack a decent dungeon finder.
It’s a bit too American, so I doubt it.
I really love this game, it’s by far the best MMO around. However – the second that stat gear appears in the gem store I will resub to WoW, even though GW2 is currently the superior game and I hate cartoon panda’s.
CoF path 1 can be done in 15 minutes with a pug. I don’t see the issue here?
I did not play GW2 until just after Factions came out but, as I recall, it was quite some time before everyone began congregation in a single place for a single activity. Everywhere you went you could find people grouping for missions or farming amber/jade for the high end gear.
Now in only 3 months GW2 has essentially limited the bulk of players to LA as they spam lfm fractals lvl (x).
There is now a gear grind for two new skinned back items with better stats and two rings with better stats but that add nothing to the look of the character.
It seems the exact opposite of exploring the world and grinding from looks rather than stats upon which this game was supposed to be built.
Cheaper to develop in the short term, yes. Better for the game, and, ultimately, for profit in the long run? I highly doubt it.
Do bear in mind that not everyone doing the fractals just is grinding them for stats etc. My guild spent a lot of time doing them on the weekend because we really enjoyed them and we had a lot of fun on mumble while doing them.
