Southsun Survival: two people, 15 minutes...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

As probably the last player still interested in Southsun Survival, I doubt I’ll find anyone to test this with me, but it’s possible for a person who is alone in their instance to live to the end of the 15-minute time limit. There’s no point other than bragging rights, since they’ll win as soon as they die, and there’s no hidden achievement or anything (heh…I’d happily bear a “Waster of 15 Minutes” title or something), but it is doable.

What I’m dying to know is: what if two people manage to live all 15 minutes in the same instance? Do they both get the win? Does the game randomly pick one as the winner? Is there special secret dialogue that no player has ever seen, just in case this ever happens? (Hey, I can dream.) I ask cause I figure someone out there’s gotta know; at the very least, whoever programmed the game, but if anyone’s done it, do say so.

Red "ping" thing on map too small

(I hate making two threads so quickly but they’re two completely unrelated issues so…)

On my minimap, the red circley thing that shows when something happens or someone pings a spot is tiny. It used to be a good size, and now it’s ugly and barely noticeable. Is this a bug, or is there an option in my graphics settings I can use to fix it?

(Take two, because I’m an idiot who posted this in the wrong thread. Teach me to multi-tab…)

I’m holding out for worlds 3 and 4 and the continuation of Moto’s story simply because if I don’t, I’m letting a corporation get away with breaking its promises and shafting good content because it’s not central enough. I’ve had more than enough of that, let me tell you.

So.

I’m glad they brought it back. I’m glad they put in the effort to upgrade it for the engine and add a few new things like the furniture store hunt. I’m more than glad — I’m ecstatic. I’ve been spending all my free time going after the tribulation mode achievements and questioning my life decisions. I’d probably spend my birthday in there if not for the play I’m in that weekend. I’m not ungrateful for what they’ve done for this month.

But if they think that’s enough for the indefinite future, they’re only fooling themselves. I hope they don’t plan to leave unfinished business unfinished, because I can’t respect any company that does that. Not anymore.

We really need more options when reporting

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

(Since there’s no Suggestions forum anymore, I’m hoping against hope someone will actually read this, though I highly doubt it.)

Like the title says, we need more options. I’ve been reporting people for using words that are in and of themselves offensive, which in the past I have seen devs claiming is okay to do, but the only remotely related option is “verbal abuse” which isn’t right. And there’s not even a text box entry where I can explain my report. Since there are mass amounts of people who don’t know that certain words are in fact slurs, I’m afraid the reason for reporting will be missed by a dev who happens to fall under that category. (That’s if reports even get looked at; I’m highly skeptical of this in any context, not just GW2 or even just online.)

The best way would be a text entry box. This would allow us to do things like report people who make new accounts just to message us when we block their old ones (we can select “harassment” but without the context, it won’t look like harassment), for just one example. Another would be reporting someone for “inappropriate character name” when it’s their guild name that’s bad. That won’t come across in a normal report. But failing that, we need more drop-down options like offensive language or heck, “Other”. This is really important and I doubt any staff will see it (no suggestion forum indicates a lack of interest in user suggestions) but I have to try. :/

Issue Reports: Heart of Thorns [Merged]

In the story quest “Bitter Harvest”, the achievements “Line of Fire” and “Untethered” are bugged. I’ve tried multiple times (after completing it once as just the story, on the same character), and I was able to get the one for jumping from the top of the helix, but those two repeatedly elude me. And apparently I’m the only one with this issue, as googling it returns nothing. :/

I can confirm Untethered being bugged. I’ve run through that part twice without being remotely touched by the vines, no credit. (almost wonder if it’s like the avoid traps bug.)

I can also confirm a psuedo-bug with Line of Fire (doesnt show on UI) still can be achieved though.

Really? Is there a hidden sniper or something? I kill all the enemies I can get to* and no achievement happens. Do I have to not die?

*Which means everything except those two sharpshooters on that one ledge, though I did kill one once thanks to ranger longbow 5, and it just respawned, so I figure those don’t count.

MF dampener would help with certain achieves

Try to kill the champion with lower level characters, it works to get lesser quality bags, according to the level range you will get a different rarity

I tried killing the champions in TA story (the only place where you can get the “thorny” champ bags, according to the wiki) with my level 50, as that’s the lowest level you’re even allowed to LFG for the dungeon, and couldn’t get any lower than a rare (yellow) bag, even if I only participated in the fight just enough to not worry that I wouldn’t get credit at all.

Since there’s no longer an active suggestions forum…

I think there should be a way to lower our MF…err, “luck”, temporarily in order to help with certain achievements, such as the junk collector one, and the champion bags one (I’m trying to collect all five rarities of all five bags for when the collection is finally fixed, but it’s really difficult to get the more “common” versions, and for once that’s a bad thing…it’s driving me crazy). Some kind of five-minute tonic or something might work.

I spent ages previewing different armor skins to see what would go nicely with the radiant pieces, as I’m less than halfway to the boots, let alone the top and bottom (which, imo, aren’t what I want anyway). I finally settled on the Armageddon legs, even though they cost a lot of karma, because with celestial dye, the…er, hanging-down-part seemed to glow almost like the rest. Since I can’t put images in posts, check out the attachment to see what happened.

Even with the brightest white dye, they’re dull as anything. Why? Is there anything I can do with my graphics settings to see it in-game like I see it in the preview, or is it a problem with the game itself? I’m really disappointed.

As we all know, unidentified fossilized insects are a rare drop from buried locked chests. They are used to buy ambrite…things, which are then used to craft weapons. Some people saw the designs of these weapons and had to have one or two or five or ten…but they can’t seem to find enough insects. Others have no interest in the skins, but keep finding them…and the fossils, ambrites, and even finished weapons are account bound. There is no step in the process at which I could sell or even give one of these rare drops that I have no use for to somebody who fervently wants one and would grind for weeks to afford it if they had to.

(I have four, by the way. And all of my lockpicks have come from living story completion.)

I’ve seen people argue the merits of account binding, and while I disagree with them, I can understand it being done for certain items. Gifts that go towards legendaries, for example; you only really get your hands on those when you’re planning to use them. But things like this? RNG items? I think it’s absolutely unnecessary. Make something a rare drop or make it account bound, but both at once just doesn’t seem fair to anyone involved.

I bought skins and can't do anything...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

I bought a bunch of skins, each of which are exclusive to one particular armor weight, from WvW vendors. I then found out that while I’m on a character, I can only unlock skins for the armor weight that character wears, so I put the rest in the bank and went to character select. When I got to the bank on another character, I couldn’t take the items out because they’re soulbound. How does that make sense? I thought all soulbound skin items were made account bound, and now my bank and one character’s inventory are full of items I can’t do anything with, and I’m out of badges of honor. Is there any way I can get the items unlocked somehow so I can distribute them to the characters that can use them?

On a tangentially related note, I’ve obtained a number of one-time skin items from living story events and such that I eventually had to delete because I was desperate for bank space. Are those now lost to me forever? There should be a way to reclaim skins we’ve had but lost prior to the wardrobe system, especially ones that can no longer be obtained through any means. (I always thought account binding was stupid in the first place, but nothing I say is going to get rid of that, so I try to work with what I can…)

Megaservers and Map Chat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

I came back recently from a month-long hiatus to find out about this new “megaserver” thing. It sounded fine, whatever, more people around, cool. But then it became extremely irritating, because now every map chat is like it was on the high-pop servers: abrasive, argumentative, and angry. The attitude of “we must succeed at certain goals and if we don’t, it’s your fault for having the wrong skills/gear/parents” is now impossible to escape, other than by turning off map chat entirely, which involves missing things that are actually interesting or helpful.

I rarely complain about changes on the forums because I rarely have strong enough feelings about them to do that. This…this is just completely ruining what enjoyment remained for me in the social atmosphere of the game after my guild collapsed.

I stayed on my server because of the more relaxed, less uptight attitude that prevailed there, and now I can’t even make that kind of choice. On the rare chance that someone in charge is reading this, please, do something.

Revelation: Scarlet among the asura

in Lore

Kestin.2368

If you talk to Senna, one of the NPCs at the camp in Kessex Hills, you get this:

Senna: May I help you?
Player: I’m gathering information on Scarlet.
Senna: Oh! Well, let me tell you. My domestic partner worked with Omadd back when Scarlet was studying there. And he told me she was crazy even then.
Player: Who is Omadd?
Senna: Not who is. Who was. He’s dead, killed by Scarlet just before she disappeared. He was Headmaster Emeritus of the College of Synergetics and Scarlet’s biggest supporter, the fool.
Player: Supporter?
Senna: Quite. The Arcane Council wanted to toss her out on her blooming bum, but Omadd made such a convincing case for her rare genius that he got them curious. So, they let her believe they were welcoming her.
Player: They weren’t welcoming her?
Senna: No. They were studying her. I mean, what if you could replicate her? What if you could grow a plant that increased your ability to reason? Unfortunately, they added to her megalomania.

It’s strange that they would put such an important character revelation in an optional dialogue with such a minor NPC, so I figured I’d share it for those who would otherwise miss it. What do you guys think? Maybe she’s not quite as lore-breaking as we thought?

Kestin.2368

My top two posts are both about dead characters needing to waypoint. How interesting.

I haven’t said anything I’m especially proud of My best posts were never upvoted, so the closest might have to be this little piece of work from a few months ago:

Now, I’ve been reading up on this whole election business, and I have to say I’ve got a question on my mind. You all busy yourselves with endless debates on benefits, drawbacks, even personality when it comes to the candidates. And that’s all well and good; it certainly helps to keep those of us whose information senses aren’t so keen up to date. Some of you focus on the leadership aspect of the job, others on the tactical necessities of a position of power in such a major domain, and in general, this forum has managed to hit on many key points of consideration.

But I ask you: what about stability? How many times, in the past year alone, has chaos emerged in Lion’s Arch? How often do things fly out of control, only able to be put back together by quintets of fighters and adventurers with mutually contradictory and yet oddly similar backstories? As players, chaos means content, and that’s great for us. But as citizens, do we really want that all the time? I doubt we do.

So I, for one, won’t vote for a candidate based on their promises of cheap commodities or flashy fractals. I’m going to vote for whoever I think will keep this city on an evon kiel.

Homophobia & the Ignore System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Kestin.2368

I have two questions.

One: A mod has stepped in to say that we can and should report instances of homophobia. Good. But does this apply to all forms of bigotry? For instance, the casual use of a certain ableist slur is at least as common as “that’s gay”, and yet the vast majority of websites I’ve been to don’t consider it even worthy of putting on the filter. If I report people who use that, will I be the one to get in trouble? I’m all for fighting slurs, but not being banned is a bit more important to me at the moment, so I want to know exactly where the rules fall.

Two: I reported the fact that blocking doesn’t work for guild chat more than four months ago. In the time since I did so, my once active and fun guild has become a lifeless well of bitterness, all thanks to drama that could very easily have been avoided — if only the parties involved had been able to block each other. Why is it that in all this time, not one staff member has acknowledged the existence of that thread or the tickets I sent? Why is it that this thread seems to be the first time they have seen any feedback on the issue?

Seriously, why don’t we get gray eyes? We have all sorts of shades of brown, green, blue, and heck, we even get a few purples. Purple, but not plain gray, which occurs far more frequently in the real world? We need multiple shades, too — a few lights, couple darks, some in between…

Where was Canach?

in Lore

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

Didn’t recall that line. And no, the object I refer to is a journal, near Canach’s Folly. That name, btw, is another indication that Canach went to the island as part of the expedition team.

But Canach is exceedingly self-righteous. Somehow I doubt he would have actually named a location “Canach’s Folly” (or allowed his own team to name it that, had he been there).

Found it: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Log_Book_Fragment

On balance, it seems that there are more statements that he came than that he didn’t. Still, I hate that there is conflict between in-game sources.

I missed that piece of info, and it is very definitive about Canach’s presence on the team…if only there weren’t other equally definitive info to the contrary. Sigh. I guess I can either choose one and ignore the other, or hold out for a dev response.

(Thought I should address something said earlier: whether or not Canach was there, I sincerely doubt Noll was there. We know a lot more about his position in the Consortium and he’s definitely an administrative type. But as always, feel free to correct me.)

As for the plants, I see why they can’t have been the original ones, but I think it’s possible that Canach derived his formula from that, or perhaps from a related species. He already knew that something about messing with those plants set off the karka, and that’s pretty much what he wanted to do the second time around, so why would he start over if he could modify what he had? Artificially engineered breeds of existing plant life might still be different enough to be considered anomalous.

Where was Canach?

in Lore

Posted by: Kestin.2368

Kestin.2368

Sorry. I should have phrased that better. The confusion isn’t due to ambiguous wording, but rather to openly conflicting statements.

Canach: Very well. Weeks ago, I sent an expedition to an unknown island to the south. They were to ready an asura gate as part of the Consortium’s development plans.
Canach: My team never returned. The gate remains inactive, and wreckage from their ship started washing up not long before the karka attacks began.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Lost_Shores/Phase_2/Dialogues

As for the apparent grudge against Canach and Noll… this is sidetracking the thread a bit, but that theory has never made sense to me, especially with what we now know from Secret of Southsun. This is how I conceive of the progression of events:

[snip]

That was probably the quote that led me to assume he didn’t go along with the expedition. (I looked into this as best I could, but this was a couple weeks ago or more, and I failed to refresh myself on the details before posting.) He does say he “sent” them, and he does say they “never returned”, which is an odd way of phrasing it if he was there with them.

As far as the plants go, that’s pretty much exactly what I had in mind: he ticked off the karka by accident the first time around, then determined how it happened and how he could manipulate the results. It’s been implied that the karka are sapient — I think it was in some old staff post about their flight from the dragon — but that just seems unlikely to me. Although it’s fun to imagine him learning karka-speak and showing them a map of all the buildings to destroy…

Where was Canach?

See, I knew there would be someone around with a much better grasp on details. (I almost didn’t even ask, because I knew how uninformed I would sound in comparison.) I was hoping there would be more to go on other than the Molten raid and Blingg’s bachelor pad, but at least the Southsun question is answered. Thank you for the clarification.

Where was Canach?

That is, where was he holing up between Southsun events? We have this quote from Kiel: “He spent a lot of time here exploring the place. Didn’t think he’d ever come back, though.” So he spent a lot of time there…but not during the interlude between Lost Shores and Secret/Last Stand.

But prior to Lost Shores, we know that he sent an expedition to scout the place, which essentially tells us nobody had been there before. And we also know Owain was the only survivor of that expedition, meaning Canach didn’t personally go with them. So he hadn’t actually been there before that event.

So if he wasn’t there before or after Lost Shores, when did he manage to become so familiar with the island? And since he wasn’t there, are there any hints at where he might have been instead?

I’m hoping to write a story or something about the transformation he went through during this interlude, so if any of you seasoned lore experts can help fill up these holes, it would be most appreciated.

Caithe's Secret. The murder of Snaff.

The only thing I know of that would even hint at this is a snippet of a fanfic I encountered, where it was stated that Caithe foresaw Snaff’s death in her Dream and had to make sure it happened as fate planned it. Which is a creative idea, but that’s not how the Dream works. It can show potential futures, but never has it shown a future so set in stone that it has to happen so that the time stream won’t dissipate or whatever. Otherwise, every time a sylvari died before fulfilling their Wyld Hunt, the universe would collapse. Plus, if Caithe were that amoral, we would probably know by now.

So I could be completely off base here, but if this is where you got the idea, then…not everything in fanfic can be supported by canon. It might be an interesting what-if, but it’s not a viable theory.

  • Zojja – lost former master
    • …. Moto?
  • Zojja – lost former master, zealously guards his work, made a name for herself as an individual, still holds a lot of overt bitterness that she unashamedly takes out on others
    • Moto – lost former krewe, steals/expands on their work, made a name for himself as an individual, still holds a lot of subconscious bitterness that he unintentionally(?) takes out on others

I know a lot of people don’t like Trahearne, but, honestly, I thought he was okay. (Or would be if he wasn’t a Necromancer using a greatsword. No idea what that’s about.)

If you play as a sylvari, you get to wield it at one point regardless of your class. For all intents and purposes, it’s an environmental weapon. Trahearne just ran into a glitch where it wouldn’t unequip even outside the instance.

I agree with the rest of your post though, particularly the fact that he’s so much more likeable (or at least understandable) if you can imagine your way into his mindset.
