The probability of having a separate Solo Queue is looking bleak. So instead mourning for its absence, I’ve decided to create a list of mistakes commonly made in order to improve and progress further in the season.
The goal here is to help the community survive and extract enjoyment out of the game despite the unfavorable circumstances. Please add what you feel most SoloQers need to improve on.
I do not wish for this thread to be hostile or vitriolic.
1. Defend the points you just capped.
A lot of times people just wander off not knowing where to go once the team has two points capped.
2. It’s very risky to attempt to 3-cap with a team of pugs.
This is how teams get wiped. A brief 3 cap could easily turn up against you.
Going for that far cap works if heavy pressure is at mid and home.
3. Don’t double or multi-cap
A strong indication that the team is likely to fail is when 2 people cap home at the start.
Multi-capping is not the same as node team fights. Only 1 person is needed to cap.
4. Be map aware
In Khylo for example, there is no need for you to keep trebbing when the enemy has 3 capped due to your team being outnumbered and your teammates just wiped. Or, if you see the point you just capped is contested don’t run away especially if it was home or mid
5. Don’t bring garbage builds to ranked
You are doing yourself and the team a disfavor when you run garbage. If you soloQ, the best builds to run are sustain and some support. I personally get discouraged when teammates hp drop to red and then black in a matter of seconds.
Edit: I know this goes without saying but bring the class you are comfortable with. The ESL meta doesn’t necessarily apply in the first 3 divisions.

They seem to become less relevant with each update, starting with the Hambow adrenaline nerf.
Did DH and Revenant replace the warrior? Because the 2 new elite specs would fit the warrior role very well. Sometimes I wonder if DH and Rev were originally meant for warriors.
It’s not funny how underwhelming Berserker is. I’m just a bit baffled
I got bigger problems. My PC isn’t fast enough to run FO4.
Main account been stuck in Emerald since Wednesday. Noob account to Sapphire in a day and a half. Many matches I got 2 pips and a couple matches I got 3 pips.
Noob account has no HoT, no lvl 80, no rank 80, no champ title, no fancy legendaries, no fancy skins, no love from me. In fact, I even requested a password reset coz I forgot what it was.
My main account however went through so many consecutive losses I just stopped logging on to it.
How the hell did my neglected, forgotten account effortlessly coast through Emerald division and now Sapphire while main account forever stuck in tier 1 Emerald?
Don’t say luck, I don’t think that had anything to do with it. Well, maybe bad luck on main account. But still……
Helseth is blunt af and I prefer that over fake bs.
There are 2 parts we need to consider:
1. Who in their right mind thought pugs vs organized team is competitive?
So yeah, if you queue solo/duo, throw your competitive spirit out the window coz the odds are highly against you. Sure you can still play and pretend you enjoy it but just throw any competitive drive out because the playing field isn’t level.
2. Once your MMR drops way way down from getting farmed, as a soloQer, you face another risk. This time, it’s getting teamed up with a 3man+ queue of bads… real bads… as in “I belong to a pve guild but wanna check out this cool new feature called leagues and I love skins” kinda bads.
Those are the absolute very worst. I’d honestly rather be teamed up with all pugs and go against a premade THAN be teamed up in a pve guild team and go against pvp pugs.
What I’m trying to say is – I agree w/ Helseth
Cheers!!!
Does anet even recognize that they are offending a LOT of their loyal, long term core pvp user base?
It is a problem. Just look at this video. This needs to be fixed ASAP.
screw you guys…. im going to soviet russia….
Several engies tried this on me and it is very dodge-able. The tells are obvious and it does have a 1/2 cast time.
I missed a dodge on one attempt and from full hp, it got me down to around 40% hp on my necro. Note that I was standing on my well that granted me protection. Engies got squishier with this patch so maybe grenadier is a trade-off? If it isn’t intentional and bound for a fix, then the engie class as one poster said, is underwhelming and will even be more so.
Condi can work if Juggernaut and IP synergized. If anet grants engies that ability, the engie condi build will only be 1-2 notches below the current elementalist.
I’d hate to see engies running condi and DPS on the same level as DPS rangers before the LB buff last year. Even then, rangers still had a few condi builds (played trapper, poison master, survival trait) that were effective.
You get punished for playing the game longer and supporting the gem store. Wow you guys, that sounds like really shoddy programming.
I bought the account for $10, I think back in 2013. It was rank 23 when I logged on to it yesterday.
Oh and my teammates from the noob account were not clueless. It was so refreshing because I get the some of the worst teammates (except for the one that frequent the forum, wink) on my main.
This is one of my most satisfying matches for obvious reasons and we got to punch matchmaking back on the face.
I think warriors and thieves were brutally gutted to minimize build diversity. I could be wrong with my assessment but what I really want to know is why
That slight buff to Berserker felt like receiving a gift from the clearance section of the Dollar Store. You can argue that it’s better than nothing but sometimes, getting nothing is less offensive because you can still hope that something more significant is on the way.
I dont think this game is a money grab. Compared to most game developers, Anet is one of the least aggressive with monetization.
Mobile gaming developers are the most notorious.
This game doesn’t cost us any monthly fees nor does it promote sleazy pay to play schemes. Yet it delivers one of the best PVP systems I’ve seen, WVW and new content.
I’m impressed with the transparency of your post and really do appreciate how you’re on top of improving matchmaking quality.
That second bug you mentioned was something I hypothesized
Profession: Ranger
Role: Sparring Partner
Last Seen: HoTM, pre April 15 update
There’s been speculation that the ranger is stuck behind the gates of Obrin Ruins (the waterpark)
Guys – this is what anet should have done while still keeping their best interests (esports, they have such a huge fetish for esports) in mind:
Before promoting the $400K prize pool, they should have invested towards recruiting the best talent they could find. I know they lost 3 pvp developers this year alone.
Hire the best, pvp developers to flush out most of the disliked aspects of the mode. An experienced PvP developer will have the track record to know what users generally like and then apply those metrics towards this game. No need to redesign from the ground-up. The combat mechanics are already good.
If their goal was to create a game mode so amazing, so fun, so enjoyable and If they listened to some of the suggestions we gave them – the community itself, will organically spread how amazing the game is.
But they made the mistake of throwing more money in the prize pool thinking they would attract professional gamers to the scene. They need to remember that creating a superior, well-made product will yield a greater return on their investment as opposed to just throwing money away, baiting people to play an unplayable game.
PvP experience is inversely proportional to the importance of personal score.
or just queue ranked/unranked over and over until you can’t take it anymore.
+1
Helseth creating artificial conflict was very clever because it evoked a reaction/response from people. Ultimately, it made the event something people looked forward to. He has a strong personality, that’s a good thing.
BEST. MAP. EVER.
I don’t know why this map brings me happy thoughts but please bring it back. Devs have already invested resources creating this ROC so I propose that they convert it to a Deathmatch based map or remove underwater combat but keep everything else.
Imagine how happy bringing this map back will make a lot of PVPers.
My favourite meta was before they screwed up the trait system.
The previous trait system seemed well designed and thought of. The new system felt like it was done by a different group of game designers who didn’t understand some of the class mechanics.
The professions that suffered the most from this change were thieves, warriors and engies. However, thieves and engies got a small buff from the expac that made slightly more useful.
Pushing 50% W/L doesn’t motivate anyone to improve while compromising the position of those that are already good. To top it off, the straight losing streak is a pretty brutal treatment to veteran pvpers.
It’s hard to respect how they structured their competitive platform.
But I know they have their reasons – due to the small numbers, they need to retain the lower skilled player by rewarding them at the expense of better players. I’m referring to soloQ, still the most dominant queue format
Held the orb for a bit over 4 hours against far superior #s. Could not be happier with TC’s pride and tenacity.
today is the day of the condi reaper. Go sow the fields with your 10 seconds of chilling cancer.
I had the most sinister grin on my face on Nov 4 upon reading about Deathly Chill’s new damage over time trait. Posted a comment on one of the threads here that day about how “right” everything felt.
Ive only been queuing solo but organized teams of veteran and tourney pvpers should consider having a Reaper in their line-up.
Nothing wrong with spreading putrid love.
Your suggestion will never get implemented, it makes too much sense. The following are other posts people have suggested, some references were made before the league started.
This needs to be prevented in the future. I’ve seen low-mediocre skilled pvpers climb divisions using the method the link’s OP is complaining about:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/MMR-Weights-and-Pip-loss/
Some kind of MMR reset is a must. A lot of people have voiced that already but will they ever listen:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Anet-Please-Do-the-Right-Thing
I don’t even know why we still have this. It creates the wrong impression in the minds of people on how conquest is played. I personally think it is the main culprit on why there are so many bad players in this game:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/The-ONLY-time-when-personal-score-matter/
It’s like teaching a child differential calculus after exposing him to lead poisoning.
I’d say this is a really COOL buff…
Somebody stop me
FREEZE don’t move
Just for fun I played my s/w shout warrior recently (theyre not as powerful as they used to be but I wanted to take a break from my rampage warr)
Against a burn guard mid fight, I actually felt bad for him for not even scratching the surface of my armor. Cleanses are great but dodging obvious tells allows you save your precious cleanses.
hey soloQers, I plagiarized the content below from Interpret Interrupt.3824 who has been pvping for 3+ yrs.
Mesmer pro tip. If you are using mesmer heal skill well, cast it so it benefits your team as well. They get the heal.
Ele pro tip. Just because your health bar is full does not mean that you should ignore water attunement. Use it to heal your teammates. Similarly using magnetic aura to protect your team. Ele is the least selfish class in the game that is often played the most selfishly.
Engi pro tip. Stop using stralth gyro on your capped node. Save it for teammate downs for perfect rezzing. You are decapping yourself.
Rev pro tip. You have the best kill pursuit in the game. Our necro should not be chasing that guy, you should teleport to him.
Warriror pro tip. Sometimes its better to HB on a downed teammate instead of rezzing. It has certainly won me some 2v2s.
Necro pro tip. Save that fear mark for the cheesy rev blocks. Instant ride turner.
Thief pro tip. Time the elite so that the first two strikes hit before the downing. Then it is an instant finisher.
Guard pro tip. Drop longbow 5 when people cluster for downs.
League Advancement is a Mess
50% w/l a huge disrespect to experienced soloQ pvpers. Only in this game where you see clueless scurbs queuing for ranked matches and being rewarded at your expense. That’s pretty much the essence of the game’s matchmaking when it goes for 50% w/l – someone has to pay for the inexperienced players’ deficit to achieve a 50% w/l. Game has no reward metrics for experienced pvpers because they are simply used as a pawn to accelerate the progress of noobs.
Current soloQ player base forgetting teamwork is required. Most still prioritize selfish interests like inflating personal score instead of focusing on objectives and helping each other out.
Balance is a mess
I bought expac expecting robust build diversity but instead we get this miserable meta driven by brainless passives, invuln, AoE cc, effortless cleansing, etc that were neatly packaged within the expac upgrade.
Terrible instructions
Game in general is poorly documented and the pvp demo is utterly useless. It doesn’t teach the new player what exactly needs to be done and what the immediate priorities are. It doesn’t reiterate the importance of capture and defense.
Barrier to entry set too low
r20 minimum to queue for ranked matches a joke because if rank points were acquired from hotjoin, you get people that are far worse than a pure noob. What you get are people who have already developed a belief on how the game is played. Most of the time, the beliefs are counter productive to capture mode.
Not the fault of user base
There is no one else to blame but the developers. They set the tone for creating an in game culture. They set the parameters for what we can and cant do. I’m not implying that they are lazy. But I am hinting that they may not care as much as we thought
The small details make the difference between developers that care and to those that do not.. Small details like implementing and never improving the counter intuitive personal score. Small details like adding a bank in hotm over a year and half after release. They fail at the small details and always seem to introduce one gimmick after another.
This is really amazing stuff. I can’t get over it. Lol.
I’ve been exclusively solo queueing since December update and realized half of my losses came from 4v5s and full premades. My second account isn’t even on the leaderboard but it finished in the top 100 during first test ladder.
It would be awesome to queue in a full team but it’s hard to organize sometimes. The few occasions I was in a full premade, the win rate was around 75%
Check out my characters’ level. I have a lvl 80 for each class but I’ve created alts mainly for pvp. The rest of my alts are now lvl 80 coz I’d get bored waiting for queue and use up tomes to level.
What I like about this game is that there is no barrier to entry to play pvp. Also, stats are universal across the board.
Instead of wasting resources on stuff like stronghold, edge of the mist, obsidian sanctum, new desert wvw they should have invested in allowing pvpers to hotjoin or private server during queue. As long as the activity is pvp related. That plus maybe a waterless Capricorn. Imagine how happy that would make pvpers. That may increase HoT sales for them and get good word of mouth from their user base.
That’s not trolling, that’s telling the TRUTH

Replacing the old trait system that used points and distributed stats with the communist version we have now destroyed diversity.
Back then you could run unique yet effective builds on ele, engie, ranger…..
(edited by Pimsley.3681)
no idea what these 4 builds might be, but how about you tweak them & try out other stat-combos than just cele.
It’s kinda hard to tweak a grandmaster trait that no longer exist. I loved how we could invest points in all 5 trait lines back then. But that goes for all classes not just engies.
My engies used 3 amulets pre-patch, not just celestial.
Why is engineer in the middle? Having more buttons does not equal being more skilled. That doesn’t mean that engineer doesn’t have things they must learn, but it’s nothing that every other class has to do already. They have and most likely will always be a safe pick for just about anything.
Actually yes, having more buttons require more skill as it adds an extra layer of complication.
Landing nades takes tons of skill. It is considerably harder to land nades on your target than arrows or bullets. It takes longer to master an engineer than any of the classes except maybe the thief.
I’m just surprised “hell” isn’t censored. Hell yeah imma use it from now on.
Hi Vague, I don’t think zapv was condescending to you at all. Your post has alarmed, maybe even offended necros due to some of the false claims that you’ve made, i.e.:
“I’m surprised necros seem to be getting a free pass when it comes to balancing.”
Our class has gotten very little buffs and huge nerfs that was kickstarted by the dhumfire nerf of 2013. It went downhill from then on. The June 23 patch gave us some sustain, but that’s really it. One of our elites’ duration got cut down in half, from 30s to 20s to 15s with no CD reduction.
And you’ve completely ignored today’s nerf to Unholy Martyr and Vampire signet
We are a late night/early morning crew away from being scary
I’d say sure, I’m having fun because I’m learning new elite specs and how to counter them. It’s really all about adapting. Either you do it to stay relevant or be unhappy with changes and play something more enjoyable.
All in all, I prefer the pvp mechanics of the pre June 23 update where you had the opportunity to distribute points in all 5 trait lines. But I’m sure they made the changes to accommodate the expac.
Good question. This is what I think:
You know you’re a good player when you are sincerely confident enough to believe it without peer validation. Confidence, not kitteniness.
You gain confidence from initially getting beaten up a lot and then learning from your mistakes. You gain confidence when you are aware and keep track of your contributions to the team.
My MMR is so high off of blazing an Alaskan Thunder kitten fatty
My MMR is so high off of railing an 8-ball of coke each hit
My MMR is so high that I actually caught the dragon
5 daze in Emerald w/ no signs of ever leaving.
I’m such a permanent resident, I got issued a green card by the government
jebro’s massive enthusiasm is absolutely bloody amazing!
There’s a difference between teams ARE zergy and teams that SEEM zergy.
The ones that are zergy usually get out-rotated and shouldn’t be a concern.
The ones that seem zergy appear that way because they beat you in fights (team or 1v1) and your teammates are out spawning making you outnumbered on the field. That’s how you get 1v2, 1v3 on a point. Your teammates aren’t around
Raid on the Capricorn was one of my favorite maps. That’s all.
Female Asura and Charr have the same style as the male’s. This broke my female Charr’s heart who happens to be a fashionista. You guys made dresses for the Winter’s outfit, why not for the new Noble Count?
Once you go Reaper, you’d know it’s a keeper
Good luck with your fight and stay strong! Rest assured that we Tyrians will have you in our prayers.
