I’ve always got my fingers crossed for “new lands…NEW LANDS!”
It’s…it’s like you know me.

Wait…it’s coming?
I might be able to return to GW2 after all….it’s a Wintersday miracle, Charlie Brown!
The problem is that the traitlines are all SUPER synergistic. We need more traitlines like Daredevil, where all of the relevant things are contained in one line, INCLUDING skills.
Instead, I have add-on effects to Steal (one of Thief’s profession mechanics) spread out across three different traitlines, sometimes with bonuses to recharge based on what actions I take WHILE holding a particular weapon.
It’s not helpful.
This is in contrast to Trickery, which for the most part makes sense (though I’m curious as to why Flanking Strikes are here and not in CS). It has buffs to steal, and adds to Trick skills even though they have almost all been knocked out of the meta.
Thief, perhaps more than any other class, could use a return to the GW1 style of spec’ing characters.
I am really hoping something legitimately good comes from the skill splits. I have been asking for them since before the game was released. They have a chance to make each area of the game have its own flavor whilst still retaining each skill having the same function. I know that initially they won’t jump into the deep end with this, but they have a real chance of offering players diversity of game play with this. I wish they’d just dive into the deep end with it. It could be something great.
Sadly, the legendary debacle has really tainted my view of this game. Multiple times they have said they were releasing them and they failed. It’s bad enough they were supposed to come in 2013 and not behind an expansion pack paywall, but to put it as a selling point for the x-pac and then drop it after the x-pac was out is just heinous. Customers deserve to be treated better.
I am cool with the lack of communication I guess. They can’t over promise and under deliver. Heck, is the Legendary Armor even in the game yet? Like, can I go get a full set of Legendary armor right now if I owned HoT? How many months has HoT been out?
If you’re going to split skills, give professions back their mechanics. Help balance thief so that it’s viable in sPvP, and nullify the insane amount of powercreep that has grown the past year.
I’d like to open up some discussion regarding the thief utility skill, ‘Scorpion Wire’.
Potential fixes:
- Reverse the order in which damage and the actual pull effect is applied, allowing for the pull to initiate first, followed by the damage. This would allow for synergy with venoms, without compromising the utility’s purpose or function.
- Increase projectile speed by 25-50%. It’s simply too slow at the moment.
- Adjust how the wire itself tracks a target. Maybe copy and paste the code that governs spectral grasp, or spear of justice, so that the projectile “locks onto” a target, rather than just travelling along a singular, linear vector. NOTE: the wire doesn’t need to be unblockable, it just needs to land in the first place. How is it that other professions get a pull that tracks, and we don’t? C’MON YO
- Increase the damage, or take it away altogether. Both changes could help facilitate the utility being used in different ways. The damage should be at least 800. To give perspective, the warriors kick ability (another underused ability), is almost double Scorpion Wires damage at 552 with a 12 second cooldown, as opposed to a 20 second one.
- Give it a bleed! If you’re going to throw a spear at something and then rip it towards you, then it would be thematically cool for it to leave a deadly bleed. Maybe it could be given more purpose through condition builds and playstyles.
Get rid of the damage entirely, so we can use it effectively in stealth. That’s the first step. Adding more damage to more skills…blech. Stealth is good.
Agree 100%. There is nothing going for scorpion wire, not for damage, reliable cc, or even utility in any manner. The whole skill is just outdated as is most of the thief kit. There could be a lot of neat things done to bring this skill in line, biggest thing is for the developers to actually try something, rather than stare at it (don’t even think they do that, more like turn a blind eye.)
Give it something unique like “recharge steal by fixed amount (10 seconds, 50%, 100%? anything)” OR have it “pierce and steal boons, up to 3 foes get pulled, 1 boon from each foe.”
Anything at this point would be nice.
I really like the idea of maybe adding a boon steal to it.. there are some really nice boon-ripping skills that it would synergize nicely with – super awesome input. To be honest it just needs to hit though, the target tracking is dreadful.
There are so many unused unique utilities, especially with HoT now in full swing. The old ‘vanilla’ skills definitely need some attention.
^And then all of this. Just, all of it.
Except we shouldn’t have to run condi evade gimmick builds in order to be effective in combat. The issue is we can’t just run normal builds and stand a chance in a fight, we as a class have to build specifically for each encounter or run a gimmick and be useless outside of the 1 thing the gimmick allows us to do.
And this is the problem.
Thief is supposed to be the spiritual successor to Cantha’s Assassin, SO…critical strikes is important. Critical strikes was super important to the ol’ sin. With our outgoing damage mitigated, we lose what we need in structured PvP. WvW, we can run builds that are (possibly) more normal and it be fine.
Hate to bump this thread but chapter 8 still shows up as a reward for level 79 in the level reward panel. Yet nothing happens until level 80. So is this a bug or does the level panel still needs to be changed?
Can confirm.
Oh dear friend, how I wish those would be seen and cared by developers.
And yet, they’re on Revenant forums all the time, trying to figure stuff out. >.<
I agree, TG needs the cooldown shortened to about 120 seconds, and their damage output (and survivability) needs a slight buff. I get they’re summoned allies, but given how much damage pets can take, it’s a little frustrating.
Take dagger storm back to pre-nerf, and it’s fixed. Neat.
Basilisk Venom is weird. I don’t want it to be so easily applicable (because PvP), but I also don’t want it to require Venomous Aura to be useful. It’s an awful conundrum.

The best (temporary) fix I can suggest is something like CrossOver. A bit more stable than Wine, though it takes a bit of processing power. Stuff doesn’t look as pretty as it should, either, but I care about mechanics more than graphics.
I don’t really get it. I have a somewhat large stockpile of materials by this point, but since I never figured out how to level leatherworking, I can’t really forge anything. Granted, that’s fine for now since I’m not at a point I’ll need to start forging ascended gear yet, but it’s another way to gain exp, one I’d like to understand for the future.
Apparently you’re supposed to experiment a lot. That’s all I could find searching around. Thoughts?
I think it’s fine that weapon skills require energy more akin to a thief. The difference of course being that the Revenant has CD on top of the energy cost which Thief doesn’t have – This only serves to eliminate freedom of play and seems to me like a direct result of poor weapon balance. Add to that pretty much every class except Thief has CD on wep skills, can’t Rev be the other class that doesn’t?
If they could at least choose between CD and Energy cost that would be great – instead of having both which seems overly restrictive and a bit weird. If you use your class resource for attacking why should CDs limit how you want to play it if you’ve spent time building that resource?
Not really. Thief needs that freedom in order to lay down those sick, sick spikes. (I’m half-kidding. But only half.) Plus, their weapon skills all cost initiative, which means while they can choose the order they want to lay down these skills, they’re doomed as soon as their initiative is gone.
This is because the thief’s reality is that he (or she) needs the lack of cooldown in order to put out the most amount of damage possible, followed by getting out of the situation. They’re not meant to stand toe-to-toe with a lot of peeps, and instead have to rely on a LOT of evade mechanics to actually be effective. Thieves don’t get initiative refilled every time they switch legends/weapon sets.
If you remove the revenant’s cooldown then, you’re just playing a soldier-class thief, at least in terms of weapon skills mechanics.
If that happens, the thief would literally be blown out of PvP harder than it already is.
Race doesn’t overly matter for class. There are a few racial elites, but they aren’t really going to give you a whole lot of benefit in terms of profession (though summoning the Hounds of Balthazar is fun).
You’ll acquire gear just by going through your personal story and exploring the world. I’d recommend holding off on using that level 80 buff you get with HoT if you’re entirely new, as you’ll want to take the time to get used to the mechanics and slowly build up your character. There’s a LOT of information and you’ll get overloaded. Heck, I still don’t understand all the mechanics after several years.
As for level 80 – there are endgame raids, fractals, PvP, and now the HoT content. You won’t be bored.
From what I can tell (I’m just getting back into the game after a loooooong absence), power creep has nerfed the thief a bit. It doesn’t KO quite as quickly as it did pre-HoT.
The thing that’s important for playing thieves is smartly using the evade mechanics. Many skills have a built in dodge (think Roll for Initiative) that help you to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. This helps to mitigate the somewhat squishy nature of the class.
Since you’ve been playing a ranged character, you might have a slightly easier time with the shortbow than I do…but there’s a lot of condition and field control to be had there. Granted, you only have a 900 range, so that makes it somewhat difficult, but it’s still fun to play around with.
Good luck, man. I enjoy thief-ing, as it’s a very active playstyle, and made me much more aware of the events in the field. Have fun!
I’m posting here so that I don’t forget about it. It’s gonna be about two more weeks before I play regularly again (because Master’s degree).
For the record, though, I’m in the USA, and play a thief. And want to learn to not suck. I think I’m about level 40 right now, even though I was a beta tester…(school’s a jerk).

We can login and see some graphics. Physics is the next major step.
Bless you, sir. I might be able to login after two years…
Stop take a breath and count to ten
Then notice this very topic dates back over three years ago.
That just tells me that people want it.
I would pay $$ just to have the music from Factions playable in my guild hall.
^All the this.
Possible Masteries:
Dredge Lore/Luxon Lore/Kurzick Lore/Warden Lore this time add actual lore please a-net. The dredge might have been forced back down, but they still have their tunnel, right? Are the wardens (aka Canthan Sylvari) still alive?
Different kind of warden. Not the sylvari kind (though I’d love it if we could twist them together).
Maybe a new WvW map that takes place in Cantha can be introduced?
There’s an idea. How about it, ANet?
Or…how about…Alliance Battles? o.O
Don’t…don’t give me heart palpitations like that.

^OP asked for a post, I directed him toward one. I stated nothing about how informative it was, or was not.
If you feel your feedback would be helpful, you might consider posting it in the thread that contains the aforementioned Dev post.
Good luck.
Oh, please don’t take that as an attack, Inculpatus! You’ve been a voice of reason amongst the many angry Mac users (myself included). I was simply offering my own observations as well – the dev tracker at that time contained no information of a timeline for a Mac client. :)

Just a few days ago, there was a Dev post about the Mac client. If you’ve not yet seen it, you can find it in the Dev Tracker.
Good luck.
The problem is that they literally have no timeline for a 64-bit client, nor did they give us any information about fixing the current client. -shrug-
But it was something.

I’m having this happen, it’s happened 3 or 4 times in the past couple of days. Always at the end of a match. The error message I get is 1083:5:7:1595:101, unlike the message the OP got.
This one happened to me.
Hey guys. I’m looking at these but they take a lot of time. I know it’s not what you want to hear but I’ll get to your case as soon as I can.
A lot of these ‘false positives’ are not false – they’re due to account sharing. Account sharing is bad. It makes you look guilty of things someone else did.
If you are innocent; you will play again. I’ll work all weekend if I have to.
You’re doing good work. Thank you, sir!

We installed bootcamp and bought windows for 1299 kronor per copy. That’s about 185 us dollars each to play this 50€ game. Also, windows is horrible. None of our peripherals work very well (goodbye, magic trackpad). What a terrible os windows is! Just under the surface is all the windows 95 looking interface and nothing ‘just works’ like it does in os x. I really, really hate windows and having had to pay so much for the pleasure of using it is galling.
I am so disappointed in Anet… This customer support is absolutely terrible. They need to remove the mac as a supported system from their website asap since it is not supported at all.
You might try to get a refund (I don’t know how easy that will be for you) and go for CrossOver. I experience some crashing, but rarely as debilitating as what I’ve been reading so far. Probably won’t cost quite that much, and your trackpad will work fine. (Mac trackpads are phenomenal, so I completely understand.)
Yeah, it got better about 20 minutes after posting. The occasional disconnect, but CrossOver is doing the job that ANet hasn’t.

Since they are selling a product that doesn’t work, a lawsuit would be the most appropriate action.
Except they’ve been able to successfully cover their keesters (that’s a funny word) by saying that the Mac client is in “beta.”
Hate to say it, but we’re kinda boned.
Hmm, now I’m getting in. Server hiccup I guess?
Same. Perhaps it was.
Hey, y’all.
I bit the bullet, and opted for CrossOver. I’m too poor to afford a nice Windows OS for Bootcamp.
Huzzah.
Anyway…anyone else simply unable to log in? The client’s downloading everything fine (neat!), but I can’t seem to get a connection. I remember reading a week or two ago that this was happening all over the place, but it seemed to be resolved.
I’m running a late-2013 iMac:
Yosemite
2.7 GHz Intel i5
16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro, 1536 MB.
While, yes, Iris Pro isn’t the best for graphics (integrated), it’s certainly not bad. I should have enough processing power to do it.
Any thoughts? I might have to see if my router has a weird firewall, but I don’t think it really does…
Precisely how long will this “beta” period be for?
I would think “beta” is a taboo word with the Mac client being in “beta” status for the better part of 3 years.
I think in general we don’t tend to drop the beta tag until we’re completely satisfied with how it runs. That just hasn’t happened yet for the Mac client, for multiple reasons. I realize it won’t make much of a difference at this point, but we sincerely do intend to get it from being barely an okay experience to at the very least a good one, with the goal being a great one. As all good things though, it will take time.
I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but…seriously?

Crossover does good work. I don’t know whether or not they support Guild Wars 2, but as a temporary fix, it might suffice.
Still, though…Mac client, pl0x.
Is there a 64-bit Mac client?
Unfortunately, a 64-bit Mac client is not available at this time. We are hoping to be able to provide one in the future, but have no timeline to provide it.
There’s frequently never a timeline for anything involving Macintosh products, where ANet is involved.
Sorry, I’m still salty over the past week and a half.
A previous poster wanted to delete their post, but this is the gist of what they said:
Nothing can stop us from visiting Cantha and Elona, while we have ships of Zephyrites .
THIS is very, very true.. There’s no reason anymore, beyond a marketing push. And while NCSoft may be Korean, I feel like ArenaNet’s customer base is primarily American. (I don’t have any numbers to support this, so please educate me if I’m wrong.) As a result…it might be wise to look towards them.
This thread has existed now for two years. We’ve eliminated one of the canonic lore reasons why we can’t travel there (seas are too rough) thanks to the airships. What if Kuunavang was an elder dragon, similar to Glint? What if she ended up wreaking havoc with the new emperor’s plans? What if she remade the Jade Sea/Echovald Forest in a fashion similar to the Dragonbrand? The sky’s the limit here in terms of story.
While Nightfall expanded on the ascension storyline from Prophecies (after a lot of shoehorning), Factions dared to be an island in every way. Weh no Su was a great approach to the Ascension question, and gave Canthan religion a lot more flavor, one I wish was explored more. Was Factions too short? Yes. Did it have some shortcomings in terms of map design? Perhaps.
But it was so freaking cool.

The gem store is a website that is rendered by the game (or at least that was how it worked back then), so the reason it didn’t work properly was something they could fix, because it wasn’t actually an issue with cider, it was just the way chromium was working with OSX.
Yes, but it also was something that helped them acquire revenue.
Follow the money trail, ladies and gents…
Here we go. I’m the problem child…
I’m running a Mac. We all know the Mac Client is a bit…dodgy. I haven’t played in a while, and thought, hey, this might be fun. The expansion’s coming, so I should be able to play the older part of the game unimpeded.
Tried to download the Mac Client. Success!
Run install package. Success!
Try to boot up GW2…Failure!
I click on the app, and it simply says, “Guild Wars 2 is no longer running.” Thinking this is an error in the download process, I attempt to delete the .dat file, only to be greeted with “This file cannot be moved to the trash because it is in use.”
I’ve checked my Force Quit. GW2 isn’t running at all. I’ve tried re-installing the package, to no effect. Anyone have thoughts?
Specs:
iMac, 21.5 inch Late 2013
2.7 GhZ Intel i5
16 GB DDR3
Intel Iris Pro graphics
I’ll bet they won’t. That’s been the policy since the conception of GW1.
Here we go. I’m the problem child (and will probably put this in the tech forums just to be safe)…
I’m running a Mac. We all know the Mac Client is a bit…dodgy. I haven’t played in a while (Hi, Gaile! So good to see your name again, after about four or five years), and thought, hey, this might be fun. The expansion’s coming, so I should be able to play the older part of the game unimpeded.

Guild Halls would be great. I miss them.
The chat box needs to be overhauled. Admittedly, I took a short break from the game, but I still cannot figure it out, 8 months later. Something more in-line with GW1’s chatboxes would be great. Alternatively, simply attempt to make the lists less confusing.
Canthan content. I’ll even help write the story, if that’s what it takes (and I’m a good writer – been told that by uni professors in both England and the US). Yeah, I know – the reason the Great Collapse is there is as an in-joke from NCSoft and their…disagreement…with the collage of Asian cultures that Cantha produced. But it was fantastic, and the story arc was really, really personal (Togo).
Keeping some of the dungeons that Living Story stuff introduces, even as an exploratory mode.
A way to go back and relive personal story quests is great.
Bringing back the Realms of the Gods. ALL of them. There were apparently realms for Melandru, Lyssa, and Dwayna in the lore of GW1 – we were never able to explore them. Finding the lost temple of Grenth (you know…the only non-outpost entrance to the UW in Guild Wars I) to get to the UW, or finding the Oakheart shrine to Melandru in the Falls (hint – jump, like you did to get to the Lair) to get to her Realm. Anything like that would be sweet. If you had to become Weh No Su/Ascended (Canthan tie-ins), that’d be something. We already know that the gods of Tyria, while withdrawn, have been fighting against their brethren – Balthazar against Menzies, Grenth against Dhuum, all versus Abaddon. There’s potential there. Loads of it. Maybe THAT’s why they withdrew from the world and became silent – they’re too busy fighting a war amongst themselves.
There was something like that in the preview weekend for Factions. There were Kurzick and Luxon tribes that had come to Kryta to settle, and eventually the Lionguard kicked them all out (except for a Kurzick/Luxon couple, who wanted to live together in peace away from their idiotic families who absolutely hated the other).
Doing something like that again, where the refugees attempt to set up camps in the Tarnished coast/Ring of Fire/Southsun Cove could easily be a stepping-stone to an expansion back into Cantha.
Heck, they could even be corralled into the (finally fixed) Great Collapse in Divinity’s Reach. There are so many story options available with Cantha that it’s…well…pretty crazy.
Consider this a person asking nicely to have Canthan things.
I was really hoping to be able to really roll a Canthan character, exiled to Kryta for the obvious reasons. The fact that there’s no architecture from Cantha saddens me greatly. The story for Cantha was (in my humble opinion [for what it’s wort]) the most personal from Guild Wars.
Truly, I am saddened by the loss of the Canthan District.
Regardless, I have hope that, if we ask kindly and politely, that we can have something brought to us in the upcoming year or so. 4th of July was always so much fun in Shing Jea….
So, please give us some Canthan goodness.
