Ignoring the LS is making me happy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seras.5702

I’m ignoring SAB v.2 and Tequat’l v.2. I gave Teq a shot just to see the changes (they’re good imo) but he’s permanent so I don’t care. I ran the crap outta SAB v.1 and ya know what? It’s not worth the time and lameness that is a return to 16-bit gaming simply for weapon skins that don’t match anything else in-game.

So I’m just playing GW2 right now the way I did when it was released. And I’m having so much fun again. I’m not worried about getting xx achievements done for a meta reward. I’m not following a champ-zerg train. I’m not hunting pinatas or doors or baskets for RNG loot. I’m not forcing myself to ignore all the great stuff Anet put into this game for the sake of a 2 week rush to get a meta or exploit a zerg farm. I even rolled an alt. I’m playing level 20 zones again nd having fun. I’m exploring areas I’ve never made time for before.

So if you’re getting burnt out from the constant LS, just ignore it once. Ignore one patch for 2 weeks and just play how you want to. You may remember how fun this game is when you stop worrying about finding 30 balloon towers and focus instead of joining those 2 random people who are doing DEs in Wayfarer.

This game isn't for you...

Seras.5702

This game is for me. Fun-centric play is better than gear-centric play. I don’t want to feel obligated to grind the same dungeon every day just for +5power. I want to enjoy leveling alts (which I do frequently) and playing through PvE maps without taking a hit on the challenge, fun, or drops (thanks auto-scaling!). I like 8 professions that each feel very different. I like being able to PvP at any level and hot-join matches as a casual PvPer. I like access to dungeons at multiple levels, not just max. I like no gear treadmill or dps-calculators for people who like to brandish their kitten. I like being able to join multiple guilds (personal friends, large active guild, PvP oriented, etc). I’m not saying I don’t have some complaints; what game is 100% perfect for anyone? But this game is for me.

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Seras.5702

I’d like to propose that a vendor appear after the LS finishes. He/she will accept all remaining LS items that were never used in trade for some items of little consequence. I have partial stacks of Marionette keys, I’m sure others have Tricolor key pieces, and potentially a half dozen other items from throughout the year+ LS that either never got turned in or are the unusable remains of partial stacks.

Don’t let the vendor sell anything that can’t be acquired elsewhere, but give us something to do with all these extras taking up bank space. The vendor would be proof that we’re allowed to finally “trash” stuff without repercussions.

Please don't make traits start at 30

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

I think I’ve posted this same sentiment 3 times already in various other threads. But I have no problem repeating myself for the sake of being heard.

Over 1/3 through the leveling process before even getting access to traits. Free trait respeccing is awesome, really promotes build experimentation. But restricting traits to lvl 30 and above limits new players and new alts from experimenting with the potential of the class. Also, it makes for boring gameplay. I don’t understand the benefits that could possibly warrant this change. If it’s because of having to earn traits via challenges, then make the first few available from very basic achievements, like exploring 1 map fully or completing 10 hearts or completing 25 events…things players of any level can do.

Also, if traits unlock at 30, does that means we have to spend time unlocking them after that or can we unlock them beforehand so we can actually equip a trait at 30?

No Grandmasters till 80. Just why? Now, not only do you force new characters to wait till 30 to even access traits, but now you have to be max level to access grandmaster traits? Isn’t the purpose of leveling to learn and experiment with a chosen class? In which case, shouldn’t you be able to do that more freely before hitting level cap? At level cap, you should understand the class fairly well and begin gearing up, not earning more traits.

How legendary Should be.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

I disagree with the specifics but I agree the with the sentiment. Acquiring a Legendary should be more than just hoping for a precursor drop and grinding away mats.

Earning one should require something more fulfilling, like a quest for each item. For instance, double-click the Gift of Exploration to summon the spirit of a great Tyrian explorer, asking you to embark on a great journey to do xxxx. Perhaps a task that requires you to visit areas all over Tyria to solve an ancient riddle. End point is a dwarven vault containing a piece of the Legendary. That piece gets forged with another 1-3 items gained in similar fashions. The tasks should require skill and effort, not countless hours farming and a large gold store.

Guild Halls, Mail and Chat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

I’ve never had much of an opinion on Guild Halls. I wasn’t a part of a large GvG guild in GW so it never phased me that GW2 doesn’t have them.

However, with the emergence of the Megaservers, I think Guild Halls are important to implement now. The Megaservers have made zones busier (which is good) but it’s now harder to gather a large group together in a single zone for organized play (which is bad). A Guild Hall would be a great instanced gathering point for guild members to prepare for organized content. Each Guild Hall could have an asura gate that transports players to a zone, as designated by an event leader, so that everyone is in their own Megaserver zone instance together. It’s up to Anet to figure out the technicalities and what-not. But this could be a hugely useful tool for guild event coordination.

Also, GvG.

GW2: The Pillars Have Buckled.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seras.5702

Ascended gear destroys the notion of build diversity. Create a new level of gear that is expensive and requires a grind to attain and you’ve effectively forced every player to pick a build a stick with it. The magic of GW was being able to create new builds at any time and always have max stat armor. Now we’ve got new skills coming slowly. Either I get ascended gear and just hope the new skills adhere to my chosen build/gear structure or I skip ascended and get to enjoy all new skills introduced by simply getting a new exotic set.

Also, Ascended gear makes rare gear that much more undesirable. Whenever I wanted to try a new build that necessitated new gear, I could drop <2g on a complete set of rares without losing much when compared to exotics. But if everyone starts wearing ascended gear, it widens the gap on rares, making them comparatively weaker.

At level 80 we have white, blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink armor. Really? We need 6 tiers of gear?

My legendaries/dyes/T3 are a waste?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

Yes and no.

Yes, your duplicate expensive dyes will become unidentified dyes, so more than likely money lost. But you’re forgetting that the money you spent for them allowed you to rock those great colors on multiple characters until April. I didn’t buy multiples so I’ve spent the last year regretting buying expensive dye for a character I don’t play anymore. Pros & cons.

As for your Legendaries: you are gaining just as much as you’re losing. You’ve got 6 Legendaries now, but after April 15 you can have dozens. That’s cool right? And in fact it’s only the skins, not the stats. So your legit Legendaries have ascended stats that you can change at any time. That’s a pretty sweet convenience. So your efforts remain. What you gain is rolling a brand new level 2 necro and giving him/her Incinerator skinned daggers. Awesome!

However, I’m kinda loving this new jumping aspect to the Living Story. It’s very different from typical JPs. And a lot of the jumping isn’t actually that hard. It’s like a challenge to get each crystal you spot. The 3 new skills make it fresh too, something new and experimental. And technically you could probably get a mesmer to port you every one of them if you really couldn’t do it. Also, the jumping in the mini-game Sprint isn’t hard. You don’t need to be 1st but one time, and that’s only if you’re a completionist. You don’t need every achievement for the node. Just 16.

These are the stories we love in real life; seeing tragedy turned to triumph. We get that in GW2 if we look deeper. It’s actually a more “human” story than the original Destiny’s Edge.

Leveling an alt is so much more tedious now

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

I have a level 50ish human Guardian that I’ve had siting around for a year. I considered rerolling him to Norn but quickly dismissed that idea, knowing that while gaining levels would be fast & easy, acquiring traits would be tedious or expensive. Forget it, I’m keeping my human and I’m gonna learn to like him.

I shouldn’t have to 100% clear an entire map (which will net me 5-10 levels) just to unlock a single trait. By the time I’ve done that, I’ll need more than 1 trait anyway. Just makes no sense. To unlock all traits for a new character costs 43g and 360 SP!! Even if you ignore the newest set of GM XIII’s, it costs 28g and 260 SP. That’s just absurd. So you have to unlock them with the challenges if you ever hope to have most of them by the time you hit 80.

Let’s see what’s needed to do that…..oh I have to travel throughout all of Tyria chasing down various challenges. Which means I’m probably never going to do things like 100% complete Kessex Hills cuz it doesn’t unlock a trait, but instead I’m going to hunt down the Overgrown Grub, Fleshgrazer, plead people to do TA story with me, and hope that COE is locked and people want to help me unlock it.

Not only that, but I have to participate in my personal story (even if it is my 7th alt) to unlock traits from Claw Island, Forging the Pact, Source of Orr, etc. Not to mention that when I choose which lesser race to help in my personal story, oops! now you’re locked out of 2 traits. Your story doesn’t have the option to help the ogres? Can’t unlock that trait…gotta pay for it.

You’re level 36 and want that Adept III trait (that we used to have at level 15)? Sorry, you have to unlock it with a level 59 story quest. What about that Adept VI trait? O yea…level 60 Krait Witch champ…tough luck.

Sorry for the rant (though not the content of the rant)…I just can’t grasp the good in this new design.

No "Dark" Environments in Guild Wars 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

Just have to completely agree with the OP and most of the subsequent posts. Probably my only criticism of the art style and atmosphere of GW2 is it’s too uniformly beautiful. I think a simple change such as making nights much darker would go a long way to shift the sometimes cartoony feel of Tyria to something immersive.

Nothing transforms something seen a hundred times as completely as lighting changes. Atmospheric color saturation & lighting is also one of the easiest things to adjust in a game by the developers, it’s just settings really.

I want to be at least a little nervous every time I go into places like Orr, not just because the monsters there are tougher but because the whole atmosphere instills a heavy feeling of foreboding and dread.

I do think Anet is starting to think this way a bit too as the recent Toxic Alliance living story has a bit of a darker feel to it, but still…LET THERE BE NIGHT!

Note bolded stuff above.

This is right on. Regardless of scarier zones, the day/night transition needs to be more drastic. Doesn’t have to be creepy necessarily. But wouldn’t it be great to have Caledon at night look like Avatar’s Pandora at night, all aglow? Wouldn’t it be neat to see the vibrant, ominous glow of asuran tech shining through the darkened woods of Metrica? Wouldn’t it be epic to feel almost lost amidst the endless snow of the Shivers at night, guided by torches and enticed by warm norn fires? Wouldn’t the Branded and Ascalonian ghosts feel that much more ominous were it darker and more forboding?

I don’t want it to be pitch black. I still want to be able to appreciate the beautiful world that Anet has created. But a more dramatic effect can go a long way.

Also, weather.

An honest question

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

May I ask – what is the disdain for gear progression?

Because every other MMO has it. This game specifically does not. As a married 31yr old I don’t have the time to lead a guild or even rep one that requires weekly raid nights and nightly dungeon runs. I just don’t have the time nor the inclination to design my life and schedule around a game that I simply find fun.

To have gear progression means that is your goal, at all times. Your goal is simply to gear up. The goal is never to enjoy yourself…it’s to get the next tier of gear. To be on the forefront of that means running raids & dungeons constantly, min/maxing your characters, getting bounced from groups because you aren’t elite, etc. Gear progression fosters a type of gaming community with a single-minded focus on getting better gear. And unfortunately, that focus often is to the detriment of fun and casual playing.

My computer crashed in early December. Then we bought a house. I didn’t get my computer fixed until March. 3+ months without playing GW2 and you know what I missed? Wintersday. That’s it…a single holiday event that didn’t leave me behind in any kind of way. I logged in and just picked up where I left off, not feeling like I had lost 3 months of valuable gear progression grind.

The point of GW2 is to have fun (as it should be for all games, though sadly isn’t). As such, Anet made PvP & WvW available at level 2. They unlocked dungeons progressively as you level. Your characters auto-scale to match the zone, so the entirety of Tyria is always relevant. They tried to maximize the fun from start to finish. Unfortunately for you (and all players who crave gear progression) the finish line just looks different to you.

Foster Creativity, Don't Punish It

in Engineer

Posted by: Seras.5702

Seras.5702

I don’t understand why when a community of gamers find a way to tailor their skills and traits to be effective and fun and creative and unique, the devs feel the need to squash it. Isn’t that the point of the game? To create builds. It’s what GW1 was all about and I only assumed this one is too.

I love that this game is not WoW with its 1 accepted build and linear trees, rather a playground to play around in. But whenever we’re having too much fun on the monkey bars, patches come by, say we’ll hurt ourselves (or others), and turn the monkey bars into a railing 2ft off the ground….how fun.

Rather than destroying traits or skills that we find effective and fun, why don’t they focus their efforts on boosting those that are underutilized? Why destroy KR at all when instead you could perhaps give gadgets and turrets some love (they did 1/2 that)? Why mess with Ranger’s shortbow when instead their GS and LB should be improved? Instead of nerfing what we’ve discovered is successful, why not buff the things that aren’t? There are some traits people take not because they’re OP, but because the alternatives just aren’t that great…how bout some attention to those?

Foster the creativity this community has. Boost the desire to experiment with new builds, viable skills, and improved traits. Don’t punish success…reward us with new ways to be successful. Instead of “congratulations you found a unique way to synergize traits and abilities, time to remove that bit of fun,” how about “congratulations, glad you enjoy that, how about this new little gem?”

Now, I understand things need to be nerfed at times…I really do. But it seems that too often a nerf comes along and intentionally & directly impacts popular builds. Scan the forums and you’ll read that certain builds are popular because players feel there are so few viable builds available. So crushing a popular build to increase variety is a poor theory. Instead, give us more viable builds by improving underutilized aspects of each profession.

I’ve repeated myself here and I’m starting to ramble so I’ll stop. I’m not trying to call out the devs or bash them for their actions. I’m trying to understand why they feel the need to approach the game and its community from the “nerf what’s working” angle instead of “buff what’s not.”

We have done some tuning on monster stats pre-80 to account for players having less traits, and stats from traits. We wanted to push back traits to give characters more meaningful progression up to 80 and keep things simpler for a new player to learn over time.

I’m sorry but I completely disagree with this. As it is, everyone agrees that open world content is pretty friggin’ easy. With auto-scaling, you’re going to make sub-80 monsters in the world even more face-roll easy for down-leveled players. I brought my lvl 55 Mesmer to Wayfarer this week to help a friend who just picked up the game. I was completely destroying things, and I’m not an 80 and have blues/greens probably 5 levels below my character’s level. Now you’re going to make the game easier??

Also, I can’t help but notice that all of the red posts are in response to people saying “yay I love these changes” but not one in response to the numerous posters who have issues with the new trait system. I’m fine with the new features (earning traits, trait resets, 14vs70 pts) but I am NOT ok with the dumbing down & simplifying of this system. We are not stupid, and don’t require the level of hand-holding you think we need.

My buddy was elated at 11 when he could begin experimenting with traits. I couldn’t imagine the boredom that would ensue having to wait till 30 to do nothing but unlock utilities and go through the same old playstyle without traits. With the current model, by 30 we’ve got 2 major Adept traits already and can goof around with what works and what doesn’t. Fun right? Apparently too much fun because that will be gone. And then no grandmasters till 80…I’m sorry why exactly? Because when I hit 80 I wanted to focus on gearing up in exotics, not learn more traits. By 80 I’d already figured out which build I liked. Isn’t that the point of leveling? To learn the class? Well now we won’t be able to learn the class until we are level capped and only then experiment with grandmaster traits.

Also, some professions are HIGHLY trait dependent. Engineer & Mesmer, for instance, are fairly weak without traits. Now new players are going to feel weaker longer without their aid until 30. Or is this just a ploy to keep players from discovering & abusing Grenadier until they’ve already learned a different build?

I’d love a red response explaining exactly why they think this is a good idea. I just cannot wrap my head around it. It seems like intentionally pushing fun away. I am so glad I’m already level capped. This would bore the heck outa me.

Essence of Luck - When to Stop?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’ve found that simply salvaging all of my blues and greens not only gives me Essences of Luck, but I’m amassing mats to level my crafting that I never bothered to before. Now this is obvious, but before it was more lucrative to simply vend the greens. But now that salvaging has the benefit of EoL, it’s more worth it to me. And now I’m leveling my weaponsmith and huntsman without much effort. Plus, I’m getting even MORE greens to salvage with higher MF%, so it’s like a beneficial cycle.

Returning to your question: for me it’ll be when I’ve gotten my crafts to 400/500. I’ll stop salvaging the greens that sell for 1s+ and just do the blues. Right now I’m only at around 59% account wide MF but it’s growth is slowing already.

There is a desire for mounts! [merged]

Nope, I’m anti-mounts. I remember playing WoW and thinking how awesome fast mounts were because I could finally get around the world without it taking forever. Because the only alternative was flightpoints, which also took time to travel.

And then I got flying mounts, which made travel even faster! Awesome, no?

NO. Suddenly, nobody did anything anywhere. People would fly around, spot a node on their mini, drop down, mine it, and fly away. No risk of fighting, no quests, no cooperation, no helping others.

Even with ground mounts, people just ran through areas, ignored mobs, ignored events, quests, & other players. It became boring and anti-social. Mounts made fighting your way from place to place trivial. Especially flying mounts.

Now, GW2 has waypoints, so there is instant travel. But they come with a cost, so they’re not typically used in excess. Players will still run to an area that’s within their current zone. I see running players helping me out with killing stuff, stumbling on DEs, etc.

Also, Tyria was not designed for mounts. Players have run speed signets and other various boosts for travel. Anything more than that and Tyria would get smaller fast. It would trivialize the content.

Some players want mounts just for something end-game to collect. I can see that, but let’s make it mini-pets. A little companion that stands next to you and signifies your accomplishment. Oooh, he has a mini-risen-chicken; he must’ve done that awesome chain in Cursed Shore. Oooh, he has a mini-burning-effigy; he must’ve gotten that achievement in CoF. That kinda thing.

The concept of a death-defying massive heal is enticing. But it requires excellent timing, an imbalanced risk v reward from potential interrupt, and has a long cooldown making it useable about once per encounter. Why wait till my hp is at 2000 before popping my heal when I can pop HT at 12000 hp and then again in 20s without having to wait for near-death in the first place, all the while using my regen toolbelt skill as well? Oh yea, and AED doesn’t clear conditions…

Bottom line: AED sounds awesome until you use it and realize all of our other options are better.

I am really not looking forward to getting home and playing this now. When it was announced I was thrilled. It sounded great. Now I find out I need 100,000 of something? And the drop rate of weapon tickets is crap even in the rich coffers? Why offer something beautiful for a limited time and make it a crap-shoot if you can get it?

Prove that GW2 is Vertical Progression.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seras.5702

GW was not vertical progression. At level 20, you could buy the top and only level of gear from vendors for next to nothing. The big money items were the snazzy looking ones. Same stats.

GW2 has vertical progression. Even at 80, it’s got white, blue, green, yellow, orange, & pink levels of gear. 6 tiers. And orange (exotic) cost a fair amount of money/time for your first time 80, not hard if you plan ahead but an acceptable amount of needed effort. Pink though (ascended) is ridiculously expensive and requires a lot of time and crafting and materials to attain.

For a game designed around build strategy being the separating factor in combat, such expensive gear doesn’t really lend itself to trying to new builds that require new gear. Who wants to grind for an ascended zerk set, only to have to grind for a dire set to try a different build. Oh yea, and there’s WvW as well, which requires a completely different style of play than PvE. New armor set there too.

Too much grind for max tier gear = vertical progression

Game Updates: Traits

Unlock new GM traits with challenges: large group events on timers, in Orr or Southsun.
-or-
Buy new GM traits from trainer: overpriced, costing 15g and 100SP just for 1 toon!

The premise of unlocking traits with challenges isn’t bad, it’s which challenges they chose that bother me.

Anyone know what sort of challenges are required for the Adept traits for new characters? Hopefully it’s something like “complete an event in Caledon.”

1500 Rescues - changes needed

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Seras.5702

They have made an attempt, sure.
But that doesn’t change the fact that there is no direct encouragement for helping citizens. All you see is a number rise, you don’t get anything direct from it.

False. Each milestone of citizens saved gets you a bonus reward bag. The more citizens you save, the more reward bags you get. Also, you get a final reward at the end based on your citizens saved. Again, the more you save, the better the reward.

The fault isn’t with the event. The fault lies with the selfish & lazy zergers who want to autoattack en masse for blue bags rather than win the event. Effort is required to save 1500 instead of 600.

And as for people still zerging and not learning, I recently got my Triple Play achievement yesterday. That’s a zone-wide achievement and it means people are learning how to play properly rather than mindlessly zerging for loot. Anet doesn’t have to spell it out for us. We should have to learn the right mechanics & strategy to win.

Steps to reduce Zerk Meta will increase it.

Seras.5702

You’re basing the changes on the effect it’ll have on your guardian only, ignoring the fact that the changes will hit everyone. The draw of guardians is the support and that won’t change. Your damage will be reduced, but so will everyone’s. You won’t become irrelevant.

Having said that, the way to reduce the Zerker meta isn’t by stat adjustments. The Ferocity change is being instituted to make gear more consistent and balancing easier for Anet. To change the Zerker meta however, Anet will have to 1) boost the necessity of support builds and 2) boost the availability to strong support builds.

Simplify Currencies [suggestion]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seras.5702

Bad idea.

I would just stockpile currencies from one event and then use it on another. I would be able to skip entire content.

Now you’re bringing up the issue of playing content for enjoyment vs playing for rewards. If the content is good we should want to play it, regardless of rewards.

But I see your point.

How about a compromise? Still get some sort of bank/wallet space for event tokens, but each new event has a vendor that collects last event’s tokens in exchange for some of the new event’s, but at a highly reduced ratio (like 10:1 or 50:1). Whatever is balanced. Maybe it’s different each time based on ease of acquisition.

I understand the notion of a company needing to make money. But it seems like some of the items that show up in the gemstore are a little too money-hungry. They could very easily make this 1000gems for 1000 stack, but they’re breaking into 3 purchases. They’re selling full armor skins for 800 gems, and then they sell a single helm for 500gems. They realize their mistake with making the 800 gem infinite gathering tools soulbound so they make the change to account bound…but raise the price to 1000 gems. They sell holiday mini 3-packs, but then force you to flush them down the mystic toilet to acquire the 4th mini, thereby necessitating a duplicate purchase to have them all. It’s a little too money hungry feeling for me. Do I still buy gemstore items? Of course. Am I happy about all of it. Of course not.
