Phantasm Death

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Hey folks,

Been playing Mesmer since launch, been my main. Over the last 4-5 months I’ve finally started wandering into dungeons and I had a question. I haven’t seen much in the forums about it so I thought I would ask….

I was wondering: do we all have problems with our Phantasms dying so quickly? When they stay alive, they do some good dmg, but when they drop so fast with 16s CD I’m left swinging my sword feeling pretty lacking as far as dmg. I typically run with pretty experienced groups so its usually a non-issue. But I just feel like I’m not contributing a decent amount of DPS.

I do compliment my damage (and protect my grp) by utilizing reflects as necessary and I see some pretty big numbers there sometimes. And I make use of Condi removal / pulls / portals. So I feel plenty useful and make the most of the utility I can bring to a group. Just the amount of damage I contribute that I wonder about.

What are y’alls thoughts and opinions on this?

Clones replacing Phantasms

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I really nice now! I took a small break from the game and was so happy to come back and find my phants weren’t getting replaced by my clones if I already had a clone out. I used to always play shatter so it didn’t matter too much… but there are times when its strategic to let the phants live for the dps.

question:what is decent dps for a mesmer atm?

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Yeah I haven’t played any builds besides zerk shatter that match up in the raw, quick dmg. Like messiah said, you can take folks down pretty fast with good timing. And even if you can get a good initial Mind Wrack in can drop someone down to ~25% hp and force them to burn heal and then just kinda kite and/or LoS them until you can drop another big shatter.

Unless thief.. then its just accept your fate haha

This is a bummer to read lol. I used ranger runes thinking oh man how great, 7% dmg! Guess that’s what I get for blindly believing it was working. Looks like its time to switch!

OP – Thanks for sharing your findings and taking the time to test it.

The level requirement would depend on who is “selling” the run. They might or might not care. I do recommend being careful with sending your monies away

As for the level gain Don’t quote me on this I think its 3/4 of a level gained once the Path has been completed.

Help With Picking Class

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Mesmer and Elementalist can both be very fast pace.

I’ve never played thief but my observations lead me to the conclusion they are fast, hard to kill, and deadly when played right. Others above also seem to point you in that direction.

Really though, you should just try some different ones! You have character slots and leveling is pretty easy. You might find that something you never expected is tons of fun! Just give it a shot. My first toon was a necro and I had expected to love it coming from other games with similar class but in GW2 it just wasn’t my thing. Turned out that I enjoyed other classes much more.

You’ll never know until you try!

I have one of each and they are very different. I enjoy Mesmer play and utility more but sometimes you feel somewhat lackluster on the DPS side of things compared to the warrior (especially when clones die!).

What weapons do you use?

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Like others have said, best to have at least one of every weapon (2 swords of course). There is a use for each weapon depending on where / what your doing.

I usually have sword+focus at all times. The other set is usually gs or sword+sword. Pistol or staff if I have the need. I’m not a huge fan of scepter or torch but they certainly have their uses.

Some guides at the top have a pretty comprehensive descriptions and uses for each weapon. You might find the most help there.

In the end tho, use whatever makes you happy and is the most fun!

Belliegerence and Vulgar Language

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Lots of folks chiming in here!

As to the OP’s comments… I don’t see behavior or language like it was described very often. When I do see it, it tends to be pretty isolated. In general, the worst things I see are pretend helpfulness like the answer “alt + f4” to a question and overly arrogant individuals. I do get a gold selling whisper from time to time too.

Overall though, I find we have a very nice and helpful community. Its quite refreshing really. I think its become even better with the megaserver stuff where I almost always see other players in maps.

Aggression or Caution, which mesmer are you?

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I’d say I’m more aggressive. Generally charging straight at them unloading followed by a giant shatter, decoy, dodge shatter again and let the confusion finish the job :p

However, in larger brawls I tend to stay out of the thick of things and get to higher ground if possible.

If its a thief tho… I try to run XD

[Edit] I did post about the issue the first day it started happening. Never heard anything back. I hope your post gets more traction!

Chat tab, healthbar, and small preview weap

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Wondering who else has noticed these things…

I have chat tabs I use for showing only party, team, and guild chat for when I’m in dungeon or pvp. Seems that guild chat doesn’t carry over between tabs. Tried recreating them but no luck :/

Green downed health bars. I read that was fixed in another thread but I haven’t logged in yet today. Green alive and green down makes identifying dead folks significantly more difficult

Small weapons in preview pane. I have a Norn warrior. Last night I was previewing an axe from a dungeon vendor that I’m after and it was very tiny looking on my waist. Now when I switched to wielded it grew to the large size it should be to be proportional with my large character. So I thought okay, no biggy. But then in my hero panel my giant greatsword was small too! Like my long Norn ponytail was almost as long XD

Light Circles and Block Shadows

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Hey guys,

I threw together some old junk to create a desktop and found the game is visually much more beautiful than on my laptop. However, I’m seeing these strange circles of light where there should be a ‘glow’ (like from a torch or other light source) and shadows look like squares in various shades of gray (screenshot attached). I’ve got the settings as low as they go in game but I don’t know much about video cards and settings. I tried playing with settings via the nvidia control panel with no luck.

The card is an Nvidia Quadro FX 4500. I know it’s not at all suited for games but other than this one issue it really runs the game nicely. I tried the latest driver as well as a few others. I also tried the GeForce driver of the card that runs on similar hardware (7600 GTX if I recall) and the basic driver that Windows will use if you don’t manually install one.

I’m running on Win 7 Pro x64, 8GB ram. Latest chip drivers, latest BIOS, all Windows Updates installed.

I was hoping one of you folks that know more than me would know if there is some specific driver, tweak, or setting that I might need to change to fix this.

Thanks!!

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Engi was my 4th 80 and I’ve been totally in love since I started. And she looks so cool in the armor I’ve gotten for her. And I finally have a reason to try for a legendary simply because it looks so dang cool…

And then on top of my midnight teal and amber colored armor sits my giant “hobosack” :/ Its just so huge. Now, I believe it helps define us (in pvp), but, why so big and bland colored? Why can’t it look cool?

To keep it fair to the other classes, don’t let us customize it completely. Maybe just let us change the color (which I’m sure has been suggested in the 1000+ replies). Or maybe just improve the look. Maybe the grenade and bomb sacks could represent the kit better, kind of how the elixir gun kits does. Maybe make them just look more high-tech, I mean, we are Engineers after all! Surely with the expertise to build explosives and mix elixirs we would have come up with a better way to carry it than stitching together some mismatched cloth, overstuffing it, and strapping it to our backs.

Just some of my thoughts that I’m sure others have also shared. I would really enjoy cosmetic upgrade. But – I feel its important they are still seen.

confused how mega server works

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Megaservers are amazing if you’re on a low population server. If you find little to no people to play or talk with, the system will automatically place you in a server that has more people in it.
I think that is what megaservers are, in short. I could be wrong though, haha!

I agree. I remember when you’d be in certain zones alone. I like always seeing ppl wherever I’m at. Only time its an issue is when there are too many folks trying to do the same heart but there aren’t enough items/kills available for everyone to get progress.

I’ve always wanted to post asking about what the “meta” really was…. now I’m just more confused.

Swiftness / Speed Cap?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Hey All,

To get right down to the point, I was curious if there was a cap or limit on the amount of speed buff you can have?

I’m leveling an elementalist and use the signet that increases movement speed. I noticed there are a few traits that increase movement speed as well. What prompts me to ask is when I get swiftness boon it doesn’t seem like I’m moving any faster. I’m not sure if its just my perception of my speed or if maybe there is a limit to how much speed increase you can have.

Thanks for any help!

Plenty of fun options out there so experiment and keep an open mind. This game is a refreshing take from what you might be used too!

I think Bandit hits it right on the money here. Especially with the last statement. This game has many of the core elements you’d expect to find in any mmorpg but there are some aspects which, imo, make this game very different, unique, and fun.

Also, I would agree with others that if you’re after straight dps then warrior is the way to go. And as Bandit said, you can have a squishy dps warrior or a versatile hard to kill elementalist. It’s all in how you want to play. Another thing that makes this game great!

Good luck and have fun

hey solo build for pve bossing

in Warrior

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I do almost strictly open world pve and map completion with the various professions and I feel that most anything you would encounter out there can be defeated with any of them. Provided your skills and effects are utilized correctly to benefit the outcome of an encounter.

This doesn’t include some of the big ones like Shatterer or Fire Elemental buuut I’ve also never had a chance to try

This is just my experience. It wasn’t the same when I was a new player though. It took some time to gain the understanding of the different effects and abilities and then be able to transfer that understanding across all the professions.

Plus, you might find you do a lot better with one profession over the other! For instance, I felt like I was a terrible elementalist, haha. I survived well enough but I didn’t feel like was ever able to really utilize all the different weapons, attunements, and utilities well enough to get the most out of profession.

Anyways, welcome to GW2! Hope those links provided above help you out.

Please help picking a second class

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I like nearlights breakdown of things.

I find mesmer fun. I dunno about huge numbers. In a shatter build I crit pretty good but I dunno how that compares to any other class massive crits. I do have a guardian in the 60’s but thats not really a good comparison. I do enjoy leveling it though.

For build diversity on mesmer though, you can do a condition build, shatter build, phantasm build and/or some combo of. Lots of builds available out there.

I’ve really wanted to do warrior but always gave up at some point. I’m not sure its the class, I thinks its just that I’ve done all the starting areas so many times.

What I find about things in this game, and in life too – I read/learn about it, but my opinion or feeling about it doesn’t come until I’v experienced it. Whats that means in the game is spending a fair amount of time trying it out.

Best of luck to ya!

How do you make gold?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

My suggestions mostly match those already given – but they have worked for me.

I sell all the mats I get, makes a fair amount of money. Unless it sells for a fair amount of silver, I salvage every item I come across. And then sell the mats.
Also, do the world bosses! Good fun, plus the items which can be used, sold, or tuned into mats.
Complete maps – they give an okay amount of coin. Plus, you’ll get the mats/items/events etc that come along with the area.

Ultimately, I feel it just takes some time. But don’t be bored in that time!

Leveling to 80

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I got a Guardian to 62 with relative ease. Fun too, especially in groups. Doing mesmer now – lvl 57, fun, but I’m not finding it as easy.

I had always assumed (based on experience from other MMO’s) that the Ranger class would be easiest to lvl. I did enjoy it in other games. Haven’t tried it in GW2 yet. On my to-do list though.

Mesmer in Dynamic Events

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

The last post was very informative, thank you. I might give scepter another go.

I also run a condition build with my mesmer, and have experienced similar issues with not getting credit. In dynamic events with lots of mobs I do find it hard to do anything significant if there are other players around. My solution changes per situation. But most of the time it involves switching one of my weapon sets to GS; if nothing else than to get a hit or two in with auto-attack.
On big bosses though, I just keep my staff out and – as was mentioned above – try to get three Phantasmal Warlocks out. I throw Chaos Storm (does pretty good dmg) and Null Field down as needed for group support.

New to Guild Wars, but what to play?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

I agree with Esplen. It seems like solid, unbiased advice.
Guardians are a fun profession. I have one and enjoy giving lots of boons/heals. It can still solo well too – excellent survivability.

I wanted to comment on what was said about mesmers. I’m working on one (lvl 57) and it does seem rather tedious to level. It was one of my first characters when I first started playing, and then I gave up on it for a Guardian. I later found that I do enjoy playing the mesmer though. Lots of different ways you can combat. I think the tricky thing at first is managing your illusions, which mob they are attacking, what affects skills/abilities have and how they work with other skills/abilities.

That said, that goes for any class really. Which is what makes GW2 a little different than other MMO’s we’ve all spent time playing.

I wish you luck on settling down with a profession. Let us know what you pick

What Kind of Mesmer Are You & Why?

in Mesmer

Posted by: SpiritualAwakening.5347

SpiritualAwakening.5347

Still leveling my Mesmer, in the 50’s. But I’ve found that having lots of clones up and heavy conditions works for me.
I use a Staff/Sword+Focus.
Most of my gear is Condition Damage/Power/Vitality

I like this because I tend to be by myself most of the time and I would often find myself in situations where I pulled more than I could handle. What I do now is intentionally pull 2-6 mobs and just keep moving and summoning clones. Use chaos armor, chaos storm, and blink when thing get tough. Use null field when against enemies that slow my movement down at all. What else is neat, is if I use a combo finisher leap (blink, phase retreat, Sword 3) out of an ethereal combo field (null field, chaos storm) then I get chaos armor for a few seconds.

What I don’t like about this is when I’m with a group during a dynamic event or something, I barely have time to do damage and won’t get credit for kills. I have to switch to GS or something to make sure I get credit for kills.

I’m not sure this build would fare well in PvP. I can’t back that up with any facts, it just seems like I would be killed before I was able to do anything significant.

Fun profession all in all though.
