Yay, good for you! This is a strategy that is useful in many of the Personal Story quests when soloing I’ve found. My human warrior in the Vigil ended up running in circles more than half the time. In the questline beyond, that playstyle is less effective, but the long bow is still useful for pulling, damaging before the enemy gets close, and AEs for groups. (I don’t know how to do the spoiler thing, so not going to go into detail.)
Well, it’s may take time, but it’s more about keeping him from getting to you, while you gradually chip away at his health. Are you kiting backwards so the auto attack hits him? And if you try longbow, it takes a sec or two for the AE to hit, so I like to target the AE on myself, and since I’m constantly moving, the enemy will often follow right onto the spot as the AE hits if done right.
Have you tried kiting him with a rifle or a long bow? I haven’t done this quest yet, but as a warrior, a lot of opponents in the Personal Story can’t be meleed, or meleed exclusively.
You can only repeat Personal Story instances if you go into someone else’s. If you’re grouped and go near the entrance, you will be offered the option of joining them. But once you progress, you can never repeat the quests yourself.
I went Norn, solely because I wanted a female character and decided I’d look silly as a human with things… hanging out. Norn run around bare chested in snow areas, so I feel more like their clothing is fashion instead of protection.
No, it just changes the appearance of… someone later on. It’s cosmetic. Krytans were kind of hispanic looking, Canthans sort of asian appearing, Elonians most similar to africans, and Ascalonians to europeans. So, unless you have a specific ancestry picked out, you can pick the one that matches how you made your character look.
You are rewarded with the best back item currently in-game for completing the quest before Against the Corruption (each Order has a different one). The only reason I’m aware of for finishing the whole Personal Story is making the little reminder in the corner of the screen go away.
Gods don’t for humans, so far, and Spirits of the Wild don’t seem to for Norn. But, there’s no way to know what will be introduced with expansions. The personality option is pure flavor, it changes based on dialogue options given by some NPCs, but has no effect beyond allowing you to speak to the occasional NPC set to a particular personality type.
As a warrior, I discovered that a lot of my problems resulted from attempting to melee, being unwilling to run, and an urge to revive NPCs that go down. All of these make Personal Stories harder for us. And of course, outleveling and gearing up are going to be major helps no matter what your strategy.
If it’s possible, you always want to give hitting the enemy from a distance/ kiting it a try. A lot of things in Personal Stories eat people who try to melee exclusively, or in a few cases, at all (ask how I know). Melee is generally works best as the last resort. If you can always open with ranged, taking off as much Health as possible before whatever you’re fighting gets close enough to do the same.
With all that heavy armor, you can feel a little silly making like a rabbit and running. Try to get over that feeling, since near as I can tell, it’s largely decorative. If it looks like your toast, try and run for it. Ideally, you’ll hit a tether on the enemies before you end up crossing the border of the instance and being kicked out. This is also a decent way to split groups of enemies in some cases. You run catch their attention, run a bit away from their spawn/home point, then hit one with an immobilizer and slower. Then you resume running until the rest lose interest, and run back to hopefully grab the targeted one before it makes it back to the group. If you fail to separate the group, be patient and keep trying, because some groups in Personal Stories are made of veterans who will flatten people soloing at the quest level.
You will get NPCs who will help you. At best, they will be utterly useless, at worst they will actively cause you problems. NPCs are only useful in cutscenes requiring them to be, do not rely on them otherwise. An inordinate amount of them seem to be set to charging in as some sort of default, which as a rule, gets you every single enemy in the immediate area and frequently leaves you facing them alone once the NPC faceplants because they’re more fragile than you’d expect, and also because NPCs do not run for their lives when you do. Stand back, open with a ranged weapon and see what the NPC does. If, like many do, they charge in, don’t follow, stand at a distance with your weapon to watch. A few can take the trouble they dive into and survive, allowing you to not take damage while you fight from a distance. A fair number will splat, which is when you run away until the enemy stops chasing you, then return and solo said enemies with the strategy you prefer.
If it’s part of the story for an NPC to die, they WILL die, no matter how you try to save them. If they are needed, the game will prompt you to revive them. There are “extras” who are helpful if revived, in a minor way, but they are never worth risking yourself over. Escorts, mentors, bosses, all these NPCs can be left until after combat to revive if they splat, and putting priority on getting them back up early just puts you at risk for armor damage. Remember, if you end up leaving the instance, everything will be hunky dory for them since everything resets, but armor damage remains. Groups of NPCs can be more effective than lone ones, but they are even more prone to bugging out and leaving you fighting alone, so go carefully.
No matter what you do, if you’re soloing, there will end up being one or two things you will end up reviving to fight again. Revive as quickly as possible and run back. If the NPCs have survived your death and are still fighting it, the enemy doesn’t heal while you’re dead. The goal is to get back before the NPC joins you in the great beyond, and start hammering away at it again. You may end up doing this a few times to take down something especially hard, but fortunately the retry checkpoint should be close.
And if you should see a human warrior running about without his pants, please don’t point and laugh. It’s not my fault the monsters are pervs and always make them fall off first
.
I do wish you’d see the various order recruiters running about. I knew nothing about the Vigil before I joined, and went solely on the quest dialogue. The distinct lack of humans in the Order got to the point of even feeling a bit freaky, playing a human character.
I was under the impression this particular plot was available to BOTH male and female? The lines for the male are likely different, but it’s less a male norn story issue, and a norn story choice issue.
Morenin, my male noble human warrior, is a remake from two other games where he was a half elf of dark elf descent, and thus had really dark skin. So, I gave GW2 Morenin the closest to his usual coloring I could. Totally nowhere near my Irish blooded complexion. (Then I found out that he should have been Elonan descent rather than Ascolonan… Apparently one of the last refugees through the Desert Gate married someone in Ebonhawke.) When making a totally new character, I’d start with whatever appearance was appropriate to the story I was trying to tell, and work from there.
I play PVE only, and tried greatsword for awhile. 100 Blade is the only ability I found to have any use for me… and half the time it was interrupted by knockdowns or such. 100 Blade is probably the only thing making greatsword worthwhile, take it away and watch everyone switch. Myself, I switched back to double swords and condition gear. Probably not ideal, but working best for my playstle so far.
This particular bug I haven’t heard of. There is one that when you choose your order, you can sometimes end up in the wrong one. For that one they are refusing to switch characters to another order. I’m sure they will fix the bug, but you may be stuck in Vigil. =/
Or… you could stop… reading them? Since they’re clearly marked…
@ minbariguy That’s precisely what I do. After the first few quests, I realized the NPCs were gonna be stupid and ruin my tactics. So I stand back, let them run in, and once they’re down, get the work done, THEN revive. On the occasions they’re glued to me, I try to work around any silliness, but if they go down… they STAY down until I’m ready to deal with them.
Uh, wow. I fell off the boat twice, but didn’t run into that. But I also swam under the boat to the dock. Maybe he’s supposed to “encourage” you to go on the path they want.
My character doesn’t like Charr, so I went for the Norn (yeah, yeah, leader of Vigil is a Charr… didn’t realize that or I’d have gone Priory). The Norn is flat out awesome looking, very stylish for a Norn, instead of having a plain Viking thing going. And when you beat him… and his friends… he agrees to bring himself AND said friends, so you end up with just as many as the warband. I’m afraid I don’t have screenshots.
I thought Orr was the Middle Eastern area?
I ran into a similar problem, and ended up having to log out and come back. And then I couldn’t get back into the instance, so I logged out and back in and was able to enter and complete it after doing it all over.
@ Awesome And bullies only pound you if you react… No, griefers and bullies are simply small people inside who enjoy making life difficult for others. A jerk is a jerk.
Person identified himself as a dev in Queensdale Map chat, told us he was spawning the doors while they work on the issue, boom, doors. Whether he used a character, or they have a way to send messages into the game without, I don’t know.
A dev just opened the doors on Tarnished Coast, if you haven’t been able to get in, check and see if they’ve been spawned, I suggest.
Like many servers, the event that opened the doors to the Mad King’s Labyrinth was stuck in all three areas on Tarnished Coast. A dev just came onto our server and opened the doors to allow us in while they work on it. I just wanted to say THANK YOU! It is greatly appreciated.
People being locked out seems to be a random bug with the log in servers. They’re working on it, whether it’s totally resolved now I don’t know. I wasn’t able to get in for awhile and finally was able to download updates and log in, so I can only suggest you keep trying.
There’s an announcement on the forum that both the problems entering the dungeon and with the login server are known issues that they are working on.
“I didn’t encounter bugs, so clearly they aren’t there!” Uh… right.
Depends on if you enjoyed it more than an activity with a similar reward?
Pointing out on the forums= not a good idea. Nerf incoming in…
The finale is supposed to be October 31st, as far as I know.
We won’t know one way or the other if it’s not that big a deal, until it happens. Anet seems to think it something important not to spoil, but okay to watch on Youtube, which frankly confuses me, since it seems a contradiction. Personally, I’m hoping it IS something fairly minor, so my guildies don’t miss out.
They announced it as Act 3 of 4, so it can’t be the finale, unless they chopped something off.
Engineers can’t use another weapon with a skin that’s out?
No way to report griefing. Also, I think it’s part of the design of the puzzle. Apparently you can get into other instances, so some people just keep going until they hit an instance with few if any of the large races.
I’m afraid this is a known bug some people are running into. There’s no solution but to do it again, and pray you can get to the chest. It may be patched to fix it before the event ends, but nothing official is out on it.
@Lutharr I’ve only managed to to finish most of my Personal Stories by kiting or hiding behind a mob of NPCs, plinking the enemy with arrows. Mind you, I hate greatswords with a fiery passion at this point. Trying to melee always got me squashed flat. Human noble with a missing sister who joined the Vigil, if it’s simply the options I’m choosing.
Rizzy, a melee warrior on anything hard is inexperienced. The name of the game is to not get hit at all, and you do just as much damage with ranged weapons/abilities. Going toe-to-toe with things that hit hard soloing PVE is an excellent way to rack up repair costs, and I’m told it’s worse in dungeons.
How the heck can you farm a chest that is accessible once per toon per day?
@ Lumines He’s pointing out the existence of the mindset you’re advocating.
If you left the copper in the mail and other people are having the same problem, maybe it’s a bug?
I can understand why the cost of waypoints. It’s basically a way of taking excess cash out of the economy. The fact that they end up costing as much as it does to repair one piece of armor is a little unfortunate though. I’ll spend it to help my friends, but random strangers? Not so much. Maybe when I’m better established and have built up some money it will be a better option for me.
I’ve ignored the heck out of the jumping puzzles, and done pretty well. The dev who made the Halloween JP has stated he didn’t expect more than 5% of players to finish it. So, basically it’s the GW2 equivalent of a raid. So I treat it as such, and ignore it like I do raids in other games. While it’s an unfortunate precedent for there to be a nice prize most players aren’t intended to have a shot at, it’s a very standard type of game design. If it’s any comfort, I’m told it isn’t really that nice, since the skin for the set is lifted from sets already in-game, and the stats aren’t that impressive.
Those innocent skrrit, grawl, centaurs, ogres, etc. attack you. Not only that, they often cause tons of trouble for the local NPCs, up to and including death. Friendly members of the species can’t be attacked, if you can attack them, they’re the ones out for your blood.
Skrrt- Chase you and heave moltove kittentails at you, not to mention the CONSTANT THEFT.
Grawl- Choose something to worship, then go on crusades to kill anyone not-Grawl who wanders by. “HOW DARE YOU COME NEAR THIS SHINY ROCK I FOUND!!!!” That was the gist of one quest I did.
Ogres- I am not going to sit still and become lunch, and expecting anyone else to want to is not a good strategy.
Centaurs- Oh man, these horses cheese me off (I’m human, so I became very familiar with them). Lessee… they saw the weakening of humans in Kryta, and decided it was a great time to push them out of the lands they’ve held. And they accomplish that by murdering civilians as well as soldiers, and setting fire to towns and destroying crops and property.
Now, as for long standing battles, what I’d LIKE is for my character to be able to attack Charr besides Flame Legion. As someone who’s ancestry is based in Ebonhawke, the Iron Legion holds just as low a place in my character’s heart. Alas, it’s not heroic enough to be in-game, so he will have to settle for muttering rude things.
Nope, it has to be done together, and it picks your group for you.
Probably too late for this year, but could be fun for next year. Reminds me of the special emotes you got for Erollisi Day in EQ2 (those were hilariously bad and awesome).
Keiran, I think you might be the one needing to step away from the computer for awhile. “Serious problem X is occurring, and you’re upset about trivial thing Y!” Except… this is a forum for trivial things. Do you make sure to never, ever complain about anything, ever, because children are starving in Africa? This doesn’t encourage people to be happier, it just seems ridiculous, at best.
@ Tommo Nope! A number of people have commented on the appearance being the same. At least it allows people to buy parts of the armor they want at cheaper than the event prices?
Just avoid being seen by your own team. I think they can be converted? So if they know where you are and get nailed, they’ll come to getcha.
Rest of the pieces are in the maze’s chest, yes, which can be looted once per day for a chance.
