Concerning your 100% rep thing: You may be able join and become a ‘cross guild’ member, as long as you’re willing to show up for the guild runs as often as you can. You’ll need to talk to the leaders about it though.

You’re running around on an enemy borderland and you’re lagging behind because your mesmer has a spitefully low amount of swiftness. Everything seems fine and you stand to the side smashing the 1 button to attack the door, slowly taking down the gate. A thief appears behind you and you are downed.

“Help! I’m downed!” You cry but the zerg disappears into the broken gate. You die a lonely, pointless and pitiful death.

Does this sound familiar? Do you long to do something meaningful in WvW? Do you want to be part of something big, something amazing and something completely out of this world(literally, this is Tyria)? Here’s your chance to – in BEAR, you have the opportunity to be amazing, be awesome and totally kick kitten .

What is BEAR?
BEAR isn’t just one bear, or two, we’re FIFTY SHADES OF BEAR. All fifty. That’s right. We’re an international PvX guild primarily based in OCE/SEA with a core group of around 50 members. We do everything: PvE, WvW and PvP; including dungeons, guild missions, untagged guild runs, tagged guild shenanigans and team queues.

We have spicy and friendly members who actively engage in chat and teamspeak. We run organised, untagged WvW runs every night during the oceanic/SEA prime time (GMT+10 7:00-12:30|Server time 3am-8:30am)with guild missions on Sunday night (7pm-8pm|Server time Saturday 3am-4am). If you’re one of our Earthly neighbours and can’t make it then we also run catch up missions during the week (usually during NA Tuesday or Wednesday nights).

Who are we looking for?
Currently, we’re looking to expand our OCE/SEA playerbase for our WvW runs, however we’re also accepting people from all over the world. We’re looking for dedicated people who are available and wish to join us for untagged runs. We’ve got 10-15 players on our roster currently and we want to expand to capture more keeps and kill more sheep(s).

S/D without fresh air

Would using s/d in wvw/spvp without fresh air completely destroy your damage? Given that it’s a great burst tool and is staple in a lot of current meta s/d builds, I’m trying to create an s/d build without fresh air but all signs lead to “hits like a wet paper tower, gets torn through like tissue paper.” Just asking for some general opinions and anecdotes.

Main hand D needs a buff

IMO, D/ is fine. S/ is a control weapon while D/ is a pressure weapon and I think that they do the role well. All of the ele autoattacks aren’t that strong and I think the dagger should be no different because the other 2 skills make up for it. Magnetic grasp works fine and the projectile speed is pretty good right now, the leap is kinda trash though, could do with a cripple effect.

Burning speed changed?

I’ve been playing other classes recently and on coming back to ele, I’ve noticed that the distance of the trail and fire explosion for burning speed seems to have been reduced. Is this true or is it some bug? When I use the skill, the fire wall is only half the distance you travel.

Fix CoF1

Please fix CoF1. I thought explorable dungeons were meant to be hard to tackle and require experienced and good gameplay to complete and a challenge (CoE,Arah, New Ac (somwhat)). CoF1 is not a challenge and it’s stupidly easy how you can farm the dungeon continuously when you’re knocking off DE farming in the past few months and doing absolutely nothing to make CoF at least harder.

The more farming spots get knocked out, the less people are going to want to play. Not everyone likes doing dungeons. It’s becoming less and less profitable for people farming areas and dungeons and the supply for mats is running dry as the demand goes up. Please do something about it.

I kinda actually like the change. I really don’t see the use in abusing 1200+ range return unless you’re trying to get both you and the enemy to go out of combat. It seems actually detrimental to have it so far because you could accidentally click it and get teleported in the middle of nowhere (stated in the OP) and then you gotta use initiative or waste time running to them. Apart from a couple niche uses like annoying someone at the west camp above bay from the platform above, it seems like a generally good fix.

Slightly off topic from the OP in terms of S/D, but you could use S/P running the same exact trait allocation (10/30/30/0/0 or my personal favorite 0/30/20/20/0). I find a lot more success going s/p in PvE, S/d in wvw (although S/P isn’t too bad in WvW as well).

The reason for this is BP. LOVE BP, it effectively makes melee mobs without AoE’s completely useless, just BP, use sword autoattack, BP when its running out, and just mow em down. You could also interrupt with PW and have rooted evades (not a huge fan of the rooted aspect but whatever). You can still have an offset that allows you to stealth easier (x/d, d/p).

The reason why you don’t really need S/D in PvE is that you really have no need to constant stealth. You have on demand condi cleansing with the 2 skill, BP mitigates a LOT of damage so you don’t need to regen health as much (and also if you run the 0/30/20/20/0 you can equip ’sin’s reward, with all the initiative you burn it’ll keep you topped off).

S/D in WvW in one on one fights really shines though. Flanking strike becomes an excellent tool to avoid hard hits and get behind/reposition yourself, and the steady access to stealth messes with players more than it messes with the AI.

o.O What’s BP? I’m pretty new to thief so I haven’t got used to the acronyms yet.

EDIT: Blinding Powder? or Black Powder? I’m assuming you mean Black Powder so you can spam it on the ground and just sit there and own face. I somewhat dislike the use of /P though. I just like Flanking Strike for evading knockdowns while attacking.

In my opinion, S/D is much better than just “mediocre.” It’s an absolute fun weapon set to play and I hope you find a build that best suites your playstyle. =)

Yeah I absolutely love it. I don’t see how flanking strike is bad, apparently it’s crap..probably because heartseeker hits harder, autoaims and uses less initiative..but whatever. It’s just hard to find a nice build that does the sword justice.

I haven’t been able to find much sword/dagger builds but I love the infiltrator’s strike as well as flanking strike and it’s really fun to use. I’m struggling to find a build for it because search bar comes up with months old builds or ones that don’t quite work out as the description says it. If any of you thief pros can recommend me a build or some opinions, combos or tactics that’d be super.

(Don’t convince me out of sword, I know it’s pretty mediocre but I’ll die before I do dagger/pistol backstab)

That fight was stupid. The enemy team ran around autoattacking and did not use a single cc. Half their attacks missed and I even spotted a couple people standing there with their backs turned. Ridiculous..

This is only because I can just reach them and I have all the other buttons filled. It’s almost impossible for me to use Shift,Alt,Ctrl+letters though.

You can get away with doing whatever you want in open world but you’re playing at 50% effectiveness unless you’re going for very niche builds in pvp and dungeons.

1v1 > Daggers or scepter
group play > staff

I wouldn’t go around using a staff in pvp unless I’m going with another teammate which I have full communication with. Probably chuck out some ccs which doing damage from behind. I mean, if it were good for 1v1s as well, I don’t see the point using daggers or scepter.

I use 1,2,3,4,5 for skills z,x,c,v for attunements so my fingers shift a lot. I use f1,f2,f3 for ultilities and f5 for elite. Heal is E and closest target is Q. I use TAB to view behind as well.

And w,a,s,d for movement, Shift to dodge, Ctrl for Enemies, Alt for Allies.

went from 0/15/0/25/30 to 0/20/0/20/30. Having RtL on a higher cooldown blows my PvE rotation so I need it. Bolt to the Heart is more useful than bountiful power because I no longer have 4% extra damage from perma swiftness/fury.

Also went Soldier’s/Berserker’s to Knight’s/Cavalier’s.

It breaks my PvE rotation because when I flip back to air, it’s still on a 3-5 second cooldown. It breaks my PvP because my timing is off because it’s still on cooldown. Combined with the fact that I can’t stack swiftness anymore for travelling pisses me off. I love(d) my mobility.

I’m hoping they do something like damage falloff from the epicentre

so let’s say currently it’s 1000 damage for the entire radius, it would be made into:

epicentre: 1200 damage
100: 1000 damage
200: 750 damage
300: 400 damage
400: 150 damage

Or something similar. Imagine it like a bullseye pattern.

This sounds like a guy who said I was almost as good as him but I should stick to water for supporting the group. He linked me his awesome condition damage stuff and I said that it was pretty good since you had direct and condis. He then proceeded to lecture me about the elements and his synergy.

Dilemma on weapon and accessory choices...

Grizledorf pretty much has it down right. It’s about your playstyle. Do you want a shorter battle where it’s more intense and based on second to second perfect hits or a stretched out battle of attrition? Berserker jewels will lower your lifespan considerably but in turn give you much greater damage. Clerics give you almost invulnerability but you won’t be doing much damage.

I’ve found a compromise to this and it’s valkyrie or power/tough/critdamage. You can have perma fury up which gives 20%. That’s 1/5 hits critting. With a high critdamage, you crit hard while giving you good survivability

It doesn’t matter how low it is when you cal refill it in 3 seconds every 15 seconds :-P

I’m happy with things staying the way they are, but if they truly are nerfing bunker eles I sure hope they give us a viable dps route.

Bunker guardians refill their health in about 1.5 seconds and I don’t see anyone screaming for their nerf. Just because an influx of ele’s have played doesn’t mean that it’s suddenly op. It’s disappointing how people scream op at the first sight of something they can’t easily kill. When thief became prominent people yelled for their nerf, same for rangers in beta. now thief is only useful in wvw apart from some niche utility roles in pve. Rangers are still ok though.

I can see ele going down the drain(well it has already, we have..what 1 viable build?) because it has only been nerfed to date and I believe it’s one of the hardest classes to master and I do not believe that any random guy who can’t should call for a nerf and have anet deliver.

I use cleric’s rings for the toughness and extra healing power. Combined with the 300 from my trait points in water, I sit at around 500 healing power. Everything else is knight’s because of the arcane trait that gives me a chance for vigor on crit. Since Zephyr’s Boon gives me perma fury, I have 40% crit chance and usually have vigor up allowing me to evade more attacks as well as proc my evasive arcana more often.

You don’t really need knight’s to have more vigor. I have 34% with jsut celestial and fury and it procs up to 1 min easily. There’s no knight’s for ascended either, nor clerics. I’m wondering if celestial or soldier’s is better.

Good opinion though. Gave me some food for thought for earrings.

I’m currently using 0/10/0/30/30 or 0/0/10/30/30 with staff in pve and dagger in pvp. I’m running PTV armour and runes for boon uptime. I’m wondering if I should use PTV in my accessories to give me more focused tankiness, or to use celestial which gives everything.

The reason why I’m wondering is that celestial gear gives ptv, as well as healing power and condition damage which are both very attractive, but I’m worried the lack of focusing and being too all rounded will end up kicking me in the backside.

Any opinions/explanations/studies?

You kidding? It got buffed. We have 2 finishers in one move at the cost of a slightly higher skill activation time. We also no longer give immobilise to the enemy and ourselves.

How do I get “amazing healing” on my ele? Mine has 450 healing power.

This will come primarily from low health pool eles, with high toughness and healing power and knowing the animations that signal big ticket skills to dodge, so that they refresh their life pool incredibly quickly, while seeming not to take tons of damage.

:O Rewarding skill? That’s not allowed. Only HS+backstab thieves and 100B warriors are allowed to win at the game.

I don’t know why ele is disliked. We play a vital support/tank role in dungeons. Fire, air give good utility skills and combo fields. Water is amazing at healing because all the skills heal except for 2 and the condi removal is large and powerful, possibly even competing with guardian condi removal(don’t tell them I said that). Earth has great finishers and cc skills.

I don’t see why people hate on ele.

I think it opens up more opportunities for combos. I could start with 3, use 5, then use 3 again when they run off and re-engage using air or fire. I’m also no longer self-ccing.

Looks like people counterplaying the old combo will have to get used to ele’s using a new combo

You mean that “split” second that’s additionally mitigated by culling/rendering? So in fact you have WAY more time to keep DPSing your target because they can’t even see you. And what reflexes are required to press 3 buttons (Steal, C&D, BS) followed by 222222. Honestly thieves have more room for error than other professions and to claim it takes some degree of skill to slap on a full zerker set, and press no more than 5 buttons to be effective is borderline ludicrous.

I got chatting to a player yesterday who was bragging about his skill on thief, he was running your typical instagib build, was bragging about nuking players in seconds and he’d been playing a thief for…30 minutes :P Guess what his rotation was….(see above)

I love how your logic works against you.

95% of Eles in WvW now just do this: RTL, Updraft, BS, RoF, FG and get a kill.
That combo is just as easy and effective as C&D, Mug, BS, HS, HS.
According to your own logic this makes both Thief and Ele easy classes.
Breaking news: a cheesy gimmick inside a class does not define the entire class, nor says anything of its depth or difficulty in mastering it.

Back to the topic.

I happen to PvP a lot with Eles lately because everyone and their mother made one now.
Here is my review:
They get high burst/DPS like Thieves, and this is fine as a melee build needs high dmg.
They get mobility on par with Thieves, and this is also fine because melee needs mobility.
They get high damage resistance through Earth buffs, and that is fine too because otherwise they would last nothing (Thief for instance has stealth to make up for squishiness).
What is not fine is the ability to recover crazy amounts of health on top of all the above.
Against Eles, the fight is pretty even and we both get close to death, at which point they heal up for tons of amounts – and this is unacceptable.

Long story short, I don’t want to see your damage gone (Anet seems to want that with all the AoE nerfing claims), nor mobility nor resistance – but I’m tired that you can reset a fight completely.
That sort of thing reminds me of WoW.
In GW2 the rule of thumb is that we get one heal, and other heals are just minor things – there will not be any sort of healer they said – and they need to fix this.
Once you use your heal skill and your health is depleted you escape or die – you don’t magically refill your healthpool like a WoW Paladin.

Wut. I do that combo and it only does 25% health damage. that’s why I stopped doing it.

You have invisibility. Eles get to heal, you have invisibility. use it to your advantage. Break combat in invis and come back to kick kitten That’s how it works for me.
