I read this thread and decided to try the fight again. It was the last HOT story I had to finish on my Sylvari alt. Things were so bad when I first tried it that I just gave up. BTW, I did finish it on my Human main about 2 weeks after HOT launched. That experience was bad as well due to the bugs and fight design.

So, first, the bugs I had experienced were fixed. Second, this is still a horrible fight. I respect that the dev team tried to fix it but it still is just not fun. It feels like an overcompensation for the Zhaitan fight criticism. 1. Illusions concept was good but why did you have to fight four of them? why not just two? 2. The penalty box is bad design. It adds injury to insult. I soloed on my Sylvari and became frustrated with having to start the whole Mordy fight over and over again. 3. Blowing players off the platform only makes it more painful. Because once blown off, you go to the penalty box.

The bottomline is that after 2hrs and countless failed attempts I gave up. Just about a hour ago, I tried again all the way from the beginning. Completed it without one death within 45mins. I should be happy but my only response was “screw this fight and not doing it ever again.” The only reason I tried on my alt is because I wanted the Sylvari experience which I thought was well done. This fight was not fun and did not invoke feelings of pride when I did it. It just kittened me off to the point that I will not be preordering POF. I am going to wait to see if POF story missions are like this and if they tie mastery points to adventure like activities. That was the other thing that frustrated me about HOT. This last fight leaves a bad taste in a lot of players mouths. Please do not ever design a story mission like this again.

Do you feel like playing with alts?

My main only has Ascended gear but I love playing my alts even without Ascended. I think it depends on how you play. I have one alt that thanks to HOT, I play more than my main. And that is because the elite spec added a ton of fun for me to open world pve on that toon. I also have an alt that I moved to be dedicated WvWer. Then I have alts where I am just playing to try out different combat styles/weapons.

Each of my alts is used for different purposes. I am big into the role part of rpgs so each has its own background and story. That keeps it interesting for me. I can tailor GW2 different content to whatever background or story progression I have created for them. it keeps the game and playing experience fresh for each toon.

Adventures :(

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

dalendria.3762

Every single one of them was a chore.

Posting to say you are not the only one that feels they are a chore. I hate most the adventures because even the “easy” ones are hard and unfun for me. I finally figured out why and this is the core issue.

Most of the adventures take away your known skills and expect you to use new ones within a time limit. I noticed that I enjoy and do well with adventures involving gliding. Why? Because I have built up expertise in gliding and enjoy it now. But for others, they change what we are used to, including our character sometimes (looking at you Fungus mushroom).

For some of us, we cannot adjust that quickly. We need time to practice and build up skill proficiency. And with adventures that need to be done for collections or mastery points, we are given no practice time.

Failing over and over again when it counts is not fun and is very frustrating.

Agree OP. I think that is one of the positives of the mastery system.

I love making alts. It felt good the first time I took my alt into the jungle and could already do gliding and mushroom bouncing. Also, whether my alt is in core or HOT, it always feels like each is contributing to progression for my main or most used toon.

I also liked how for some collections (elite spec weapons) getting an item applied to multiple.

Yes. This is one of my favorite things about HOT. I did first playthrough on my human main. Then did next on my Sylvari. Loved how differently she was treated. And when the call happened, it was well done. Arenanet did a good job simulated what Sylvari are experiencing as a result of Mordremoth’s attack and his call.

Honest Discussion: HoT

dalendria.3762

Thanks for posting OP. Read it all and get what you are saying.

Here is my opinion of HOT. I liked it at launch and still enjoy it. However, I see valid criticisms of it and understand the reasons.

HOT is different than core GW2. The other day, I played one of my low level alts. The difference in my gaming experience was so distinctly different than my HOT play sessions that it felt like I was playing 2 different games. That is what I think is the heart of the frustration people have with the expansion (pun intended).

The other disturbing thing is that frustration is being expressed in all game modes. I have even seen strong, valid criticisms from lore/story fans.

The only group that seems to be completely satisfied are those that like raids. And until HOT, GW2 was a “no raiding” game. For those that followed GW2 development, you know that the devs/PR people clearly stated multiple times that GW2 would not have raids. And they explained why. So it is curious that the one feature that seems to be a HOT hit is one that was never in the product feature set pre-GW2 launch.

For anyone that is not getting why people keep saying the game has changed, just play Central Tyria and HOT back-to-back several times. It will look and feel different. There is a stark contrast in the experience. And people that experience this have a right to be disappointed and ask Arenanet for clarity on direction.

Again, I like most of what I have experienced so far (excluding WvW/sPVP since have not played since HOT release and Raids, which I do not generally like). But I am concerned about the overall reception that HOT has received. If it has truly been as poor as it appears, this is not good for the game’s future.

Thanks for posting.
I am also enjoying Daredevil. I just created a Thief alt to try it out. But I could never get into it – find the right build for me. Daredevil has made me go from using my thief as storage to actually playing and enjoying it in the HOT pve maps. I die a lot more than on my main but that is also giving me a reason to focus on refining the build.

I cannot speak to its viability in modes like PVP, WvW or instanced content. I never intended to play it in those – just created it for fun as roleplaying character.

I also like the animations and skills. It makes me feel like a Shaolin martial artist. lol.

Who else is enjoying HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: dalendria.3762

dalendria.3762

Have not played in weeks but enjoyed what I did.
Note: I stopped playing once Fallout 4 came out. Will return once I get a bit further in that game.

I like HOT but can also understand many of the complaints. But since this is a positive thread, will only focus on the good.

1. What is your favorite part in the HoT Personal Story? (Spoiler tags please!)

The beginning parts in VB. Really felt the aftermath of the Pact’s demise. Well done by Arenanet in creating the right atmosphere. I also played the beginning on my Sylvari Alt and like how differently that character was treated.

2. What Specialization have you tried so far? Which is your favorite? What one will you try next?

Post-launch have only tried Daredevil. I love it. I really did not like my Thief alt but this spec has given it new life. She reminds me of a Shaolin monk in a martial arts film. For the first time since creating the Thief, I am really enjoying it. And that is all due to the elite spec.

3. What is your favorite event or map in HoT?
I have spent the most time in VB so I would say Verdant Brink.

4. Are there any other areas you are excited by? PvP? Fractals? WvW? Guild Halls? Masteries? Raids?

WvW – have not tried the new map yet. am looking forward to it once i return. also, have a few more masteries i want to get -like ley line or the exalted ones.

5. What are you most looking forward to now?
Doing the events in TD and DS. I also want to finish the east and north sides of AB Tarir defense. Once I have completed most of the Magumma open world on my main, then I will focus on finishing out my elite spec on my Sylvari Thief. I may also do the personal story on her again just to continue seeing the different treatment of Sylvari player characters.

It was a buggy mess when I tried to do it on Sunday, 11/8. I tried solo and with groups for a total of 2hrs. Finally did it with a group due to a horrible bug lol.

They all had died due to the glider bug. I kept wailing on Mordy. I knew we could not advance without the party leader but I was so frustrated with this fight I just kept hitting him. I died on the last glider part. We all went back in using the reentry. And then bam, all of the phases were happening at once. Mordy’s health was still low but he was invulnerable. New mobs were attacking and every now and then the blighted did their original dialogue and showed up. He would become killable after we dealt with them. I was typing, “it’s bugged just keep killing everything”. And we did. We finally got the finish him request. Fight and story over. I dread doing that on my alt and probably never will unless people confirm that all the bugs are gone.

If that is not a buggy mess, I don’t know what is. It should be fixed asap or shutdown to save others the frustration.

I have only completed the story and most of VB/AB. So far it has offered what I was hoping for – good open world pve, fun new elite specs, good story and variety (music, environment, events, mobs). I even fell in love with my alt thief. I love daredevil and finally enjoy playing that alt.

I have so much left to do and have not even tried WvW. May only personal complaint is that I am not done but Fallout 4 is coming in a few days. I wish the expansion had come out earlier so I could have finished more before Fallout. Oh well. first world problem lol.

Last story mission is VERY BUGGED [Spoilers]

dalendria.3762

No spoilers but the final boss fight is really bugged. Edit-forgot to confirm glider bug.
And Arenanet decided if you die, you get reset at the beginning.

I am writing this so I don’t rage quit the game. You can check out a Reddit post for a ton of bugs that occur that I have not experienced…yet.
Bugs:
1. The portal appears outside of the floor area.
2. If you die, sometimes the boss mechanics do not reset. I was fighting illusions and experiencing his wave thingy at same time.
3. Illusions sometimes get stuck and cannot reach you for melee attacks. I have both range and melee build so was able to deal with this. But if you are melee, you will have to run to where they are stuck. Hope that bosses attack does not waste you cause you will have very little space to dodge.
4. Glider does not always open. so yes, you die again.

I read one tip. If you die, go back in and jump off platform to die again. This should reset the boss mechanics.

This fight is hard enough. The many glitches are disappointing. I am trying this again until I see confirmation that the bugs are addressed.

250 HP For Elites [Feedback][Merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: dalendria.3762

dalendria.3762

250 Hero Points is way too easy.

Disagree. And I am someone who is not even planning to play my Elite on my main yet if at all. But I see the point of those that hated the original approach. This change does not impact your ability to do Hero challenges. You can still do them just for fun – if you have all the points needed for the unlocks.

Long Version:
1. Not everyone has done 100% map completion.
2. People who only like WvW or PVP should not feel forced to do lots of PVE to try and max out an elite spec.
3. People who had planned to use the Elite Spec to play through the new maps can now do so. They still need to get points in the Jungle. But do not have to worry that they will not have an effective Elite Spekittenil the of completing the content.
4. Arenanet was not clear about the requirements needed to unlock the Elite Spec. Before or even during Beta, they should have told people a) that it would not be unlocked right away and b) about the 400 point requirement and things that would need to happen to achieve that.
5. This has been a marketing and PR disaster that can hurt their revenue in the short and long run. People who stated that they were excited about HOT and the Elite Spec became extremely frustrated/disappointed when they saw the 400 point requirement. This type of anger undermines the GW2 brand and reduces customer loyalty that sometimes cannot be regained. Changing it to a manageable 250 is the right Marketing move to try to restore goodwill.

Wish we never bought HOT (Small Guild)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: dalendria.3762

dalendria.3762

Our small guild claimed its hall Saturday night. Not sure if 4 people can do the expedition, but please see tips below. We had 6 and did not have access to the new squad UI. Mixture of ranger (me), mesmer, warrior, engi and eles.

1. Our officers read up on the fight and the boss’ breakbar (right before we went in). We were not sure if we had enough mez skills but went with who was on.
2. We used Vent, mainly just to joke around. But it did help a few times, when we got lost in there or failed one of the mini-bosses.
3. On mini-bosses, one person set targets. Most of us focused on that, but some took out the adds. I did both using my LB.
4. Once mini-boss is vulnerable, we used ranged and melee. A few times I switched to gs.
5. Don’t get discouraged if you fail one. You will have a few more chances.
6. No spoilers but beware of one of the fights. It is close quarters. We did not know that they would box us in and had some deaths. This was the one we failed since we could not kill all in time.
7. Final boss – kill him using range.
a. For some reason, he focused on me a few times. I just kept running away trying to use the throne to break line of sight. Was not trying to kite just trying to survive. Suggest studying his aggro mechanics beforehand.
b. Rez the dead. Do not go to checkpoint. It is back at the beginning.
After I shook aggro, I rezzed who I could. So did our other guildies. We could not get everyone up so I think we killed him with 4 or 5.
c. Watch out for his nasty range attack. It is that burning fire like the modrem guard have and will result in instadeath.
d. I’m not berserker spec. At one point, I was one of two alive. My hp is 20k. Not sure about my toughness but try to have ppl with decent survivability.
8. After defeating him, savor the moment.
Explore the place (both above ground and underwater). Calling it a guild hall is an understatement. It is a zone big enough for you to get lost or hide in.

Hope that helps. I have a video of us killing the mini-bosses. I may post it once I figure out how to get the size down (its 27gb).

Adventures Tied to Map Progression?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: dalendria.3762

dalendria.3762

Feedback from someone who loves HOT so far:

When Arenanet talked about Adventures, I thought they could be done at anytime. The very first adventure I found is tied to map progression. It is not accessible until certain conditions are met on the Itzel part of the map.

I like the Itzels, so for rp reasons, I decided to spend a lot of time in that part of the zone and repeating their events. I kept going back to the adventure at different points, and it still was not available. It was not bugged, eventually I was able to do it “once”. The problem was that all of the unlock criteria was not being met by the “map.”

This is poor design. Adventures are presented as personal achievement oriented activities. There is even a Leaderboard and tracking of your stats. So you should be able to do those at any time and not have to depend on other players to “unlock” access to them.

What do others think? Is this the approach for other adventures throughout the zones?

In fact, much of the time, you can’t access that next vendor or teleportation spot unless someone has completed the right event chain in the past hour or so and kept it clear of enemies.

This – is an issue for me on some Adventures. First, this is feedback coming from someone who loves HOT so far. But Arenanet please begin analyzing these complaints because they do point to some frustrating, restrictive design choices.

When Arenanet talked about Adventures, I thought they could be done at anytime. The very first adventure I found is tied to map progression- the issue Jack of Games is sharing in the above comment. It is in the Itzel area, a place I like. For rp reasons, I decided to hang out with the Itzel so I have done the area meta multiple times, spent a lot of time there. Kept going back to the adventure at different points, and it still was not available. It was not bugged, eventually I was able to do it-“once”. The problem was that all of the conditions were not being met by the “map.”

Unpopular Opinion: I’m enjoying the expansion and all of the new things there are to do within. This is particularly true with the onset of the Halloween event and the fractal revamp. Also ranger buffs at last!

I think you and I in the minority on the forums. Another ranger enjoying the expac.

But I do understand some of the common complaints. Anet needs to revisit the Hero Points required to unlock the elite spec skills. The main reason is because they never clearly explained how it would work and what you would be able to do with it at launch. I don’t care because I did not plan to use it right away. But others did and should have been told when and how they would be able to maximize their Elites.

Like someone said, there are a lot of people with Buyer’s Remorse. A good marketing rep or manager knows that needs to be addressed right away. Once again, they have done something that has undermined their brand and customer loyalty/goodwill. Once you lose those, they are hard to get back.

Sorry this has been happening to you. I always feel bad when ppl have these kinds of experiences in a game. The game should be a safe place to have fun. Not just another real life place to insult, attack or disenfranchise people.

My main is ranger and what I play most of the time for past 3 years. I just ignore people. I am really not into MMO dungeon/raids, probably due to horrible experiences I had in WOW. Horrible as in racist and sexist comments being hurled at me or others.

I played GW2 dungeons for first 6 months then stopped. Probably before all the ranger hate started.

Need Advice Maintaining Druid and Core Builds

in Ranger

Posted by: dalendria.3762

dalendria.3762

Hey Fellow Rangers,
Not sure if I have posted in our forum before so “Hello!!!!”. I have mained Ranger since early access and love it. I need advice on Druid and Core. My current core build is LB/GS with heavy reliance on pet and weapon swapping (Marksman, Skirmish, Beastmaster trait lines).

Short version:
Are any of you going to use your same ranger for both a core build and druid build? If so, any suggestions on how to maintain both? For example, maintaining two sets of armor, tracking your different build loadouts? I am struggling with how to keep up with and easily swap out between these distinct playstyles/builds.

Long Version With Background:
I finally have a core build/playstyle that I love. Have spent months perfecting it. Have taken it into Verdant and it is working for me. So I originally thought, I will not do an elite spec on this character. But I loved healing/support in other games, so I was going to create a whole new character for Druid.

Now that I have seen what it takes to unlock Elite Spec, I have decided not to do that for Ranger. I had a ton of hero points left over and have unlocked many Druid skills. But I am struggling with how I can easily switch out between the two. I already have decided that I need to document the current build (I will forget my specs – getting a bit old lol). I wish they had build templates and if they do, please tell me where they are. I just need a way to easily manage this so that it does not become “the game” for me.

Depends on what you like to do. Mostly solo player in small guild (avg 6 ppl on at any given time). I love this expansion so far. I mainly do Open World DEs, exploration and WvW. The new map is challenging and huge but for me fun. It feels like a fresh, new game and that is what I was hoping for.

1. New map – Level 80 (if this is what you mainly wanted to do, wait until you hit 80)
2. Guild Hall Acquisition – Level 80 (same as above. once the guild has it though, i think any level will be able to go in. You could use one of those teleport to friend items to get in there.). Acquisition is possible with small guild. We completed our expedition last night.
3. Revenant – Buy now so that you can level this at your own pace. As you level, get as many hero points as you can. You are going to need them to unlock elite spec once you hit 80. Not sure how long it takes you to level but there will be waves of ppl hitting the new map. If you buy now, you can catch Wave 2 or 3 (around Thanksgiving).

I have not tried WvW or sPVP yet. Not into Fractals either. So can’t say if it is worth it for those modes.

Latest patch today has broken the game for me. I was having no issues logging in yesterday and earlier today (1pm est). Now, it is stuck on login screen for long time. When it finally loads, many of the graphical assets are missing. Even on the character selection screen, assets are missing – no progression box, no character models, and on some alts no picture in thumbnails.

Edit: To add PC specs and current situation.

Has happened to me as well. Submitted 2 crash reports today.
At 7:00est, game crashed after I tried to close the app. I was able to login but none of assets were loading and I was stuck. I tried to logout of that character but then the whole client crashed. It was working fine 6hrs ago and yesterday. I did notice a patch before I logged in.

Is HoT the death of solo players?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

OP I understand your points and don’t think you are complaining. I enjoy a lot of solo play as well in this game. Don’t let your current exp frustrate you to the point of quitting.

1. Deaths – I had many in SW after launch. I have being doing that area since Jan. and rarely had that many. Yesterday, same content with no issues. So why did I die 4 times at VW after launch release? had to be Arenanet changes. all I can confirm is I have less HP than I did on Thurs. pre-launch.
In VB, i’ve been playing alone and in groups. It is actually getting better but still dying. And we are not the only ones. My guildie was in VB before me and that was the constant feedback – dead, dead again, oh my gosh what has happened to my Mesmer, dead again.

2. Mastery – During beta, many people complained about how quickly mastery bar was moving. So I am assuming Arenanet has slowed that down. Remember, this applies to the account so what do you do when you have all unlocked?
I assumed it would take time just like zone leveling so I am fine with the current pace.

3. Content-locked – Not being able to complete things until you get the mastery is both frustrating and interesting. I did not like it in beta. I wanted to see us get the basic movement features at once (gliding, mushrooms, etc.). But it is what it is. I am just playing now and trying not to look at the mastery exp bar.

My personal experience so far has just been in open world. I have not thought once that my solo play is hindered. It feels more like when I first played the game. I am lost most of the time (seriously, I have no idea how to get to places), dying again and having to step up my combat style (e.g. more situational awareness and decision-making). For me, this has been exciting and what I wanted because the game feels fresh and new. But for others, maybe not so much.

I hope you continue on and start to find a sweet spot. I love good lore, stories, exploration and action – so far HOT open world is delivering on that.

Have you played Dragonhunter yet in a beta? If not, I would suggest you do during an open beta.

I played it last weekend and was a bit disappointed. Ranger is my main but I did not expect it to play like that. However, I did expect the excitement I felt when watching the videos. It did not happen. For example, the leap move was way too short and unimpressive. The rest of it did not seem special or unique to me.

I will give it one more try before I make my decision. But again, suggest you play it for a bit before making a switch.

Ranger pve greatsword viable?

Ranger GS user here. Not playing in dungeons since 2013. So i use it for open world play
I created a build of LB/GS that heavily relies on weapon and pet swapping to generate fury.

I love the build because it is just fun for me. More active and forces me to think about my next attack. Also, I found the GS easier for me to control than the sword mechanics (the leaping I mean).

there are some min/max builds out there using GS. but i would suggest going with what you find fun and comfortable.

Abusive players

I am sorry that this happened to you. The majority of the GW2 community is positive. In the 3 years playing this, I just had one incident where someone harassed me. I did report and believe that Arenanet received it and took action. Strange thing is that it happened in last few months. Wonder if the expansion announcement has drawn “toxic” players into the game.

Given the type of bans they have handed out in the past and their pride at having the “friendliest mmo community”, I doubt Arenanet is not taking this serious. However, if you really need reassurance, send them an email explaining the situation and the action you took. Hopefully, someone will confirm receipt. I don’t think they will tell you what they actually did though. Believe it goes against their policy.

Are people moving away from MMOs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

dalendria.3762

Is the MMO genre becoming stale and people are prefering smaller more casual games?

Will give fact and opinion based responses to your question.

Fact 1 – The MMO market is oversaturated. Google the list of MMOs. It is huge with new ones announced every month.

Opinion – Because of the increase in variety of gaming genres and platforms, MMOs do not draw and retain players like they did in the 90s. People have many videogaming choices and MMOs are not always their top one.

Fact 2 – Majority of people consume content at a fast rate. Sometimes faster than devs expect.

Opinion – Devs cannot keep up with the pace that majority of people consume content. Some devs have lost credibility because they share a content schedule to justify subscription costs. But end up not delivering on that schedule several months after launch. Therefore, players and watchers (ppl who track MMOs) have become disillusioned, resulting in quitting that or MMOs in general.

Fact 3 – Average age range of videogamers is in 30s.

Opinion – Demographics of videogamers has changed and so have their playing habits. They no longer see videogames as an “investment.” Instead, they “invest” in their real life and make that a priority. Therefore, more and more gamers are leaving MMOs because they cannot or do not want to “commit” to long term investments.

Hopefully, it will help brand new players connect with the story and new characters.

No new content till expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There is a difference between having nothing to do once you reach lvl80 apart from a legendary and having anything to do which is endgame…which can be translated into progression past lvlcap.
I am just comparing their expansion with other expansions and i am trying to see if their expansion is at that level.

They have shared that their mastery system is progression beyond cap. They are going for horizontal progression not vertical. So base numbers like our level will no longer be increased.

Instead, we will be able to improve our skill through mastery while doing the content we enjoy. Their endgame is still the same that they shared before and shortly after launch – “same thing you enjoy doing at level 1 you will continue to do at 80”. Point is to have fun through a horizontal progression-driven system.
