high dmg is ok if its ranger/warrior type of dmg not thief/mesmer type of dmg

stealth in this game is uncounterable and even if you hit them during stealth they don’t get revealed which is kittening dumb not to mention they have a million evades and teleports and in general dont really need to aim or position themselves or anything cause thief/mesmer are kittening easy mode

Also they can stun you forever. I was against a mesmer and whenever i ccd im i got stuned, i wanted to heal i got stuned i wanted to use a skill i got stuned. When the mesmer runs out of stuns he goes invisible channels his mantra and there we go again stun.

PTS aren’t a cure all, and let’s not pretend otherwise. Most of the people I know who were on PTS for WoW did it so their guilds could get raid timing down for when it went live. Did nothing to help with the bugs. They were only interested in getting world firsts or whatever.

I repeat, public test servers aren’t a cure all.

We don’t pretend it is a cure, we know it should be integrated as a part of their testing workflow. Also, "Most of the people I know " is a meaningless extrapolation, PTR in WoW did serve it’s purpose to an acceptable degree. It is not my intention to come out harsh, but PTR is not just a fancy idea it’s a essentially a developing tool.

Don’t be holding WoW up like it’s some kind of shining beacon of perfectly polished gaming because it’s not. I played that game and every single patch without fail was full of bugs, from wildly unstable servers to bosses twirling off into the lava to low level paladins beating end game raid bosses and throwing their rankings off for entire seasons.

The only reason you don’t hear about it as much is they rarely launch patches. I think they are going on a year now without one and their bug forums are still full of bugs from the last one!

PTR being useful in WoW != WoW being a shining beacon of perfectly polished game.

This obviously isn’t about WoW, I just commented on what he said.

If they do it after you start your rapid attack, it is called being outplayed on a micro scale. If there was a problem, it would be near 100% uptime without doing anything, not actively using it.

Everyone is a bunker build now (except me because I think it’s stupidly lame and refuse to stoop down to that level) and it’s ruining PvP.

Define bunker build.

If you’re stupid enough to play bunker, then you do no damage, but can survive stuff. It’s boring, stupid and ruins PvP.

The amount of games I sit afk in the base because I’m bored of being killed by ppl I cannot even damage below 90% is rediculous. I’m posting this while in a game actually, my 3rd afk match tonight.

Unfortunately d/p is a bit underpowered these days. You can play it and be successful, but there are better specs out there. Thx for putting the effort out to make the guide. It’s bound to help someone.

I’m failing to see how it’s unfortunate they’re taking away from a faceroll build to make it worth it’s skill input. I hope they do that with other classes and builds.

D/P SA - Removing the training wheels

(Note that the following mainly pertains to WvW; the current PvP Meta doesn’t use any points in SA anyway)

Whenever I run into a Thief in WvW they’re nearly guaranteed to run one set of D/P and 6 points in SA with Shadow’s Rejuvenation. The whole concept always struck me as a bit of a “training wheels” build since you’re sacrificing a lot of utility and raw damage for the ability to 5+2 your way out of nearly any losing engagement.

While on-demand Stealth is a very important core aspect of the Profession, that particular setup is also incredibly boring to fight against since most (bad) Thieves won’t deal enough damage to be a major threat to you in between having to repeat the BP+HSeeker combo just to stay alive. The main counters to the combo are Interrupts and Stuns / Dazes, both of which you either readily have access to (D/P, S/P, Sleight of Hand) or lack completely. Even then, depending on their loadout a Shadow Arts traited Thief will outheal most of the damage you can lay on them between visibility periods. As an end result, every Thief winds up running D/P because it’s really the only safe way to play against other D/P Thieves, and we end up with a bunch of Black Powder bunnyhopping slap fights.

So this is the crazy suggestion part, but what if Black Powder was changed to a Darkness field instead of a Smoke field? It would still retain the crucial Blind area control that is necessary to survive in melee engagements, but would change the 5+2 to no longer give you a “get out of jail free” card and allow for more strategic use of the skill. Leap Finishers (e.g. HSeeker) would gain target-specific Blindness, and Projectile Finishers (Shadow Shot / Headshot) would gain Lifesteal.

“But my Backstabs!”, I hear the horrified cries of outrage. Shadow Shot would have to receive a buff to compensate for this, but the change would place D/P squarely as a Blind-focused melee setup with tons of potential to remain in melee range effortlessly, limiting Backstabs to Utility-deployed Stealth (Smoke Screen, BP, SR). D/D would return to the high risk / high reward core “Backstab loadout” role; as it stands D/D has very little benefits over D/P aside from greater damage output at a major cost of survivability, and the proposed change would address that.

In closing, here’s the TL;DR:
- Black Powder from Smoke to Darkness combo
- (Major) buff to Shadow Shot
- No more 5+2 spamfests
- Bad Thieves dying in droves

Comments and angry rants welcome! I’d love to hear how this would work / wouldn’t work / why it would be “the final blow to an already dying Profession” / what would be necessary as compensation if this change would take effect.

Well changing how BP works will affect DP in PvP as well. It makes much more sense to change specific traits in SA, eg. tone down the rejuv from the GM.

(Wvw) Hi everyone, where is the main damage source of d/p? I ask this because my backstabs dont chunk as hard as d/d and when i trade auto attacks with someone i take more damage than them. Im running full beserker with ogre runes, cav acessories and trinkets, and beserker rings. 10/30/30/0/0 or 0/30/30/0/10
Is there something wrong with my build or am i playing it wrong? Even with blindfields a gs warrior just outdpses me.

That makes absolutely no sense, you realise that? If you are using the same build for both weapon-sets, there is no difference in BS damage and obviously D/P has more survivability, especially when you are exchanging auto-attacks with anything for that matter.

Hello,

my question is: why isnt it used more in PvP? Every guide or high ranked player I saw ever have used Basilisk elite. But I find it to be more effective despite of the much greater CD. While Lyssa runes were dominating thief PvP I got it why Basilisk was used, but now – in the age of str runes – hasnt this time gone by? Or is this an ego issue rather? What I mean by that is the ‘Only noob mesmers, necros and ranger use AI for PvP’ assessment… So is TG ‘noobish’ and ‘for suckers’ or am I actually missing something meaningful here?

Can you explain in what part of PvP are you referring to? In tPvP a rationale could be that you would want to minimize your dependency to AI (as a thief). Also, BV can force CDs if you are not peeled from your target, whereas you can LoS some abilities of the TG thieves without blowing any major defensive ability.

Suggestion: Solo Queue Role Selection

To make outcomes in Solo queue less comp based, I suggest that Arenanet implement a system where people define their role when they queue from a selection of 5 basic types:

1. Bunker: Attempts to stay on the mid point and cap it while supporting team mates. Examples: Bunker Warrior, Bunker Guardian

2. Brawler: A build intended for team fighting. Examples: Hambow, Condi Necro

3. Support: A build which brings teamwide power ups or healing. Example: Cleric Staff Ele, Spirit Ranger

4. Duelist: A build intended to win far point, or defend home node. Examples: Axe/Sword Warrior, Beastmaster Ranger, Minion Necro

5. Roamer: A high mobility burst build intended to finish fights with unpredictable spike. Examples: Thief, Portal Mesmer

Solo Queue matchmaking could be changed so that a team requires a Bunker, Support, and Brawler (the teamfighting core), and then a mix of Duelist, Brawler, and Roamer builds. These roles could all be marked by an icon in the party UI so that teams could just look and understand who intends to go where at the beginning of the fight.

Not only would this create more even matches which aren’t decided based on comp alone, it would allow more people to play the way they want to in each match. For example, you wouldn’t have games with 3 far point pushers or 4 bunkers or 5 roamers. If you queued with a particular role set, you would be able to perform that role in general. This would also make solo queue better practice for those looking to perform seriously in team queue.

I m sure this has been proposed before. Even so, +1.

The downed system does not make sense for a competitive PvP game. If someone is able to take you down, you should be down. You weren’t prepared. You messed up. You didn’t stun the glass cannon build. Your teammates didn’t help. Sucks to suck. Can you still resurrect them? Sure, and make the resurrect time a little quicker to aid this. But don’t give them abilities that are sometimes better than some abilities while they are up. More often than not, the downed system is annoying. You get about one guaranteed “save my butt” ability to buy you time, a decent auto attack, and perhaps a third useful ability. But 9 times out of 10, you still die and you just wasted everyone’s time doing nonsense. The rally system doesn’t make any sense – how do you suddenly get the ability to come back up, now perfectly fine, just because someone else died?

First of all I don’t see how this specifically relates to HJ.

You are suggesting that there are down-state abilities better than some abilities which you have when you are up, yet you don’t enumerate them, elaborate on why they are better, actually you don’t even write just one of them.

In my opinion there is nothing particularly nonsensical with the rally system. It gives an element of RP in the game ( though a rather vague one) and it is a mechanic that you need to account for in fights, which is always good, as it highers the skill ceiling.

Anyway you should care about what the top teams run as they are usually the best specs currently. And you can safely assume that they don’t run condis because 1.) condis aren’t that effective on their own or 2.) condis are most effective against less talented players, and these top teams successfully beat condition users.

Either way, it says condis aren’t the meta.

But the problem is that these top teams represent an extreme minority of the PvP population. From a developing point of view, it makes more sense to cater for the casuals, if they make more than 90% of your player-base. So for that percentage, a condition meta exists, whilst it shouldn’t.

No matter what improvements or changes are added, it seems nothing can be done to address the high population of borderline cyber-bullies that berate and harass newer or less experienced players.

You can’t even be civil or ask questions, they just respond with things like “cuz u suck.” I’ve seen it happen to others, and it’s happened to me as well. Today, right after such a comment, I got an important call. Tried to leave match and couldn’t, I literally tried everything, and thought it was bugged….

Match ends, but harassment does not. spvp is the only game mode I’ve been where someone has gone out of their way to whisper hate and or ridicule to me after a game, as one of my teammates did after this one. Not for afking or trying to leave, but just general hate and how I should stay in pve.

I’m normally decent enough to carry my weight, and win more often than I lose, but on the off chance ANYTHING goes wrong, you get ripped on by kids with keyboards.

If I was a new player, and this were the first game mode I had played, this would have completely ruined it for me. If that were my impression of how the general player base was, I would cut my losses at $50 and pretty much quit. Fortunately it usually just ruins the spvp game mode for people, and there is always wvw/pve.

As someone who plays mostly pve/wvw, the spvp community makes the game mode feel like a completely separate game/community entirely. All of the changes, and new and returning players and reward tracks are all wasted on the sad minority of kittens that ruin the game mode for others.

Even if verbal abuse reports were more strictly enforced, and we lose some players because they were punished for violating, it would still be way better than hemorrhaging all the players they send away with all their ego rage.

Not that you are wrong. But I never understood the point in these posts. You are playing a competitive part of the game, it is natural for people to lose their temper. Just don’t give a kitten about it?

Perma Dodge build over the top?

As a warrior I have never complained about thief’s. I have always left that to other classes like rangers to do the complaining.

Always felt like I had the advantage vs them in most fights and it was only the really strong thief’s that put everything into damage and caught me off guard that got me.

I have yet to die from a thief with this build but I am just saying It seems over the top. It’s super annoying. To be honest it makes the fight last a long time and its a lot of fun for such a long fight but it just seems over the top to me.

I know you are thinking how can a warrior say anything is over the top, and I agree there are some warrior mechanics are are a bit easy mode but I see no warriors perma dodging.

So you are saying that they are over the top because it takes longer for you to kill them? I mean it could make sense arguing against D/P burst thieves, which can beat you relatively easy if they get the opener. Or how the stolen whirl needs to be tuned down. Or maybe if they actually kill you, oh well.

Every thiefs use this trait. The best condition removal in the game and its only in adept tier. Broken.
Very unbalanced. Its making the thiefs immortal for the most condi builds.

10 seconds interval is insane but i think this skill should move to higher tiers.
For example:
5secs interval and master tier or 3secs interval grandmaster tier.

This thing might be good in WvW, but in tpvp it’s quite subpar to other traits you can pick up. Trickery far outweights every benefit you could get from traiting that deep in SA. So yeah, you are wrong.

I said that the result from the wiki’s damage formula is 1k less than the damage the phantasms deal. I noticed this before the patch (Could mean that it was bugged before patch?) Some threads however are very misleading in saying that the phantasms use their own weapons with their own weapon strength. It was impossible to know if this was bugged or not and the same damage was being dealt pre-patch.
What does this tell you?

Damage on light armor golem after hotfix is approximately 1k less. Even though not as many people as before complain, I’m still getting QQs about the damage being too high. What does this tell you?

Well depending on what number “not as many people” stands for, that the hotfix did make a difference in the general playerbase ( not a meaningful thing necessarily).

There is currently a bug with all NPC damage in PvP being higher than intended. We are shooting to get this fixed before the Tournament of Legends.

QA didn’t catch heartbleed, pretty sure they could have missed that one too. Joke aside, it would be interesting to see their workflow before they deploy their patches. I mean there is no PTR ( as far as I know?) so how exactly are they stress-testing all the features?

cmon guys 9k dmg from AI is normal!! or “how much conditions did you have on you”? “it scales off of conditions”…LOL! Yeah AI needs to be hotfixed for sure..

The problem was that we didn’t multiply the coefficients correctly. Good thing those nice mesmers indicated the arithmetical issue and that everything was working as intended.

As Chaith told you, your position in the ladder is calculated based on a rating that isn’t a direct mapping to your w/l ratio. Here’s the algorithm.

Laintime was one of the most well known names in the WCM circuit. So its not that impressive tbh :p

Laintime, Vurtne, Niar, Kishkumen, Maydie etc where the major movie studs. But we had a lot of guys ofc that didnt make videos or had videos that had a bit less exposure. Like the Warders of the melee ppl who dominated the EU scene during vanilla, tbc up till the early wotlk days.

But its cool to see im not the only wow veteran on these forums.

On topic:

The system matches ppl who are in queue. So you need to be a bit lucky as higher or lower rated player to get matched with people of even skillllevel. Ive seen matches with ppl during their first games getting matched with the absolute top of the ladder. So rank 40 isnt that bad even.

They are busy creating a new and improved system that seperates new players from veterans. So fingers crossed that it will improve the situation.

Of course I am saying that. Do I really need to elaborate on why you shouldn’t be doing that?

The problem though, is that you perceive several things as progress, which in a PvP context are quite irrelevant. Progress is being as competitive as you can, not collect titles or finishers.

Now I know there are a few people for whom mere “fun” appears to be enough. But for me, the reason I play an MMO is to make up for the lack of progression in my own eventless life, and so “fun” isn’t a primary factor. It’s not the driving psychological need. The thing that keeps me coming back to play a game is the progression. Some sense that I’m getting better and better in some measurably regard that is also publicly visible.

Already, since people can’t see ranks at the end of the match it has ruined quite a bit of my goal. The saving grace is that my finisher is still visible. But it’s just a matter of time before everyone gets dragon. In the old system, I would have moved on to higher levels by that time but now there’s no more progression and nothing to differentiate me from someone who reaches dragon rank 1 year from now.

So my heartfelt wish is for Anet to introduce new progressions for r80 players. I’m not talking about ladder ranks etc, but something more solid. More titles or something. Anything, because really I like sPvP so much, I just need some token form of progression. But that little bit of progression is necessary for me to keep playing.

Ultimately an MMO fills a void in my life. And “fun” isn’t the key to filling that void. So far, the hallmark of MMORPG games has been leveling, grind, getting ever higher gear and ranks and titles and what not. I invested a substantial chunk of time into sPvP as I was delighted at the prospect of goals that were nowhere in sight. And I suddenly feel let down as I find myself bumped to r80.

So please Anet…give me something more to achieve!

Your notion of progression frankly is quite absurd. Titles are more solid than ladders? Seriously?

Well as you said, you are losing perspective. In the end no matter what you do or what you want this will still be a game. If you feel the need to prove yourself that you doing something worthy you might want to reconsider how you spend your time. No offense.

After reading a couple of threads and have it happen to me personally figure I would post this. Just cause you have a high rank means nothing. Its not hard to understand how spvp works hold more points then other team = win. I’m only level 14 and can usually go thru a match and next to never die and probably get most points for the team. I’ve solo/small group roam in wvw since beta I get how PvP works. Lol. I actually had a guy try to blame our loss on me because I was lowest rank when I challenged him to come to a empty Map and fight me he had every excuse in the book why not to. Just like in another thread some guy crying because he was with someone lower rank them him. Unless you followed him the whole time how do you even know how good/ bad they are? In fact if they are bad just give them tips and move on is it really that bad to lose every now then? Pvp needs more people to get good. More people equals more Dev focus. Please stop with these elitest attitude s and just play the game. Rant over

I really don’t understand what the big disappointment is all about.

Have you seen the rank 60 shark and rank 70 phoenix emotes? They are 200% better in design and animation.

Yea, the shark has the same animation effects as the bear/wolf/cat/deer/rabbit and only really differs by its size.

The phoenix isn’t far off from the dragon finisher. Both take up about the same size, last about the same amount of time, and have unique color/textures.

If there’s something that seriously merits trash talking it on the forums like some spoiled rich white high school kid, then I’m just not seeing it.

My theory behind it is quite simple. Originally rank 80 was going to take years for someone to get, therefore arenanet decided not to make one at all.

After inspecting it closely, its dull, it lacks design, the animation is horrible, and its a lighting dragon.

My theory behind it is quite simple. Originally rank 80 was going to take years for someone to get, therefore arenanet decided not to make one at all.

After inspecting it closely, its dull, it lacks design, the animation is horrible, and its a lighting dragon.

I decided to pvp naked, only wearing my eye-patch, to differentiate from all the Mist Runner pve-swag kungkittenstyle heroes. Since you only need one item with the rune it’s viable.

And what of all those character slots we purchased for the sole intention of pvp’ing? Multiple characters of the same profession that we need to unlock traits and level? You guys are backwards.

Hello as a wrong playerbase player I would like to ask Anet to post the projection on the graphic that shows exactly if they really did it with purpose and analysis the time that is projected to be needed in order to reach spvp ranks 80 for any casual player that plays like 2hours per day. SERIOUSLY or you are really really bad in calculations OR you just gave us exponential leveling spvp system in order not to have to create/work/implement better system nor release any new content on the long term as a first intend. If you would have implement pve leveling with such exponential leveling system there would be no level 80 players yet… It’s broken system that noone enjoy it’s no fun useless ranking points linked to capture points mechanism that is ridiculously and incredibly not rewarding. Another graph about the game incomes of people focusing only spvp comparing to other game contents would make a huge scandal.
You know very well what I am talking about and It’s really lame…
I did give a try on spvp for 3 weeks in order to reach lvl40 tiger rank. If I would be on this game mode earlier in game history I would already be asking about Fixing this beyond broken game spvp leveling mechanism. I don’t get it that noone ever scream about it, seriously this content need to be rework and balance (class balance is one thing but here I talk about balancing the time spent playing / leveling => Exponential is time consuming with no significants rewards and can’t be fun for anyone)
So Anet policy : play every content like you enjoy but in WvW we give 10k wxp rankings linked to each character. Finishers plays spvp like 2years long leveling 8H/day. People who release such stuffs need to check this : http://www.iqtest.com/

Since you have no significant reward from rank(sic) why do you care? If you are seeing it that way and considering that nobody is forcing you to reach higher ranks, your complain doesn’t make any sense.

Having people bashing on the fact the developers “knew” that this would happen, after having Sharp explained the rationale behind that decision is quite counter-intuitive.

As Cogbyrn.7283 wrote, adjusting the meta is essentialy iterative, no one has the magic formula that will balance a dynamic system, i.e the meta, in one night.

If you need analogy, think of a roundabout with cars, if everyone charges headfirst into it without consideration of all the other moving parts (cars), things get pretty messy pretty quickly don’t they? It’s the same for software development.

It’s not as simple as people seem to think. The coding part is probably the easiest bit!

I would like the ability to revert to the last choice, but funnily such a change will likely take longer to get to us than this fix.

I know the in and outs of software construction thank you very much.The issue here is that you dont tell your customers,your “not a high priority” even if it is reasonable to assert that.I dont care about how orthogonal(or not for that matter) the modularity of their design is,it wasnt even my point.

Being a developer,doesnt mean that I m going to gently pat them in the back and wait if I ll get lucky with the fix,just because I know what a pain it could be.I would never tell my customer,you are not a high priority and leave him hung for a week because of my own mistake.

Don’t worry about all these whiners, just get the fix through QA and release as soon as you can. I know it can take some time, actually working in the software industry gives you some perspective on what happens (I’m guessing many posters here thing you just do some code changes and press the magic ‘update’ button that updates the game, job done).

I know it’s frustrating as a developer when you have to wait for the cogs in the rest of the machine to turn, but keep it up and know many people still appreciate what you’re doing and actually know what it’s like to be stressed because impatient people with no understanding of the situation keep badgering you.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and the fix is ready for Monday so we can carry on with the story after the main events for halloween

Let me elaborate on our no understanding of the situation:
They have located the bug,they have engineered the solution,they have forward the solution.But they wont patch it,because its not of high priority.This is how we do not understand the situation.
