Feedback/Questions: The Megaserver System: Guilds and the Future

Also , the guild cap exists for a reason, to stop guilds from “monopolizing” the player base, which is common in other games. “Superguilds” as we call them. They have very little benefit for the community as they discourage branching out.

IMHO I think that this should be discouraged by way of incentives rather than punishments. Smaller guilds could get bigger benefits out of guild XP/MF/gathering bonuses for example, compared to superguilds.

What are you talking about, the JP is what bothers you, Not the drinks? The JP is one of he easiest ones in the game. It takes you about 3 minutes to finish each run. It just takes a a bit of practice. If this JP is bothering you they you clearly haven’t tried out the actual ones in the game.

I’d probably say it’s actually kinda tough because of the time limits. Most of the JPs in the game give you time to look where you’re going but this one puts you on a time limit.

Not that that makes it actually hard. It’s just harder.

Honestly I’d rather major prunes to the other classes’ damage ouputs.

In particular, Thief having 10+10+7% modifiers in Daredevil is ridiculous, for what is ostensibly a defense-oriented spec. It’s going to cause serious issues for second ES.

[New Effect] Suppressed

in Profession Balance

1. what if it does not self destruct? it would actually cause new boons to expire the next second they are applied!

Yes?… It would?… I don’t know where you’re going with this.

That might actually be kind of cool. Fighting a necro, they slowly stack up this condition on you over the course of a fight that severely hinders your boon application. Fits into the theme of a necro; you get weaker, they get stronger. I’d probably say that this is a stronger design. Of course, it steps on complaint 3’s toes, but let’s get to that when we get to it.

2. actually cripple and chill have some similarities, both reduce movement though chill reduces even more and increases recharge time. bleed, poison, burning all does damage over time. what is wrong with boon bleed reducing duration of last applied boon over time?

They have similarities, but they are not another effect’s baby version. You could make a case for Cripple, but that’s counterbalanced by Chill being an incredibly strong and relatively infrequent effect, while Cripple just goes all over the place. Chill is also primarily focused on its inhibiting effect, while Cripple is focused on its snaring effect.

Burning and Bleeding have key differences which greatly affect how they math out. Poison is first and foremost a utility condition, not a damaging one.

As I noted above I think it would be stronger if it didn’t self destruct. If that were the case it might address this, because it’s no longer a baby boon strip but boon suppression.

3. true, but that did not stop them from introducing torment condition. :p

What they’ve done in the past is no justification for doing things in the future. Adding Torment might even be internally considered to be a mistake. There is a precedent for them adding a condition when they feel it’s necessary, yes, but first it needs to be proven that it is indeed necessary.

well, yes, correct.
but people still complain about having too many boons and not enough boon stripping so why not?

Do they? I mean, I don’t pay much attention, so idk.

Even if they are, this is not necessarily calling for a new condition. Boon strips, boon corruptions, boon steals and boon punishes do that just fine without adding new mechanics.

Why does this game even have "Shortbows"?

I’m pretty sure most of the classes in the game can use swords, as opposed to almost none of them who can use SB’s. Also swords allow an offhand weapon, giving utility, defense, or offensive differences, which is much different than a greatsword which is yielded in two hands.

Weapon swap mechanics should be changed

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

10 seconds recharge is too long. If I misuse a weapon skill, I now have recharge on that skill. That makes sense, it’s a reasonable punishment for the mistake. If I mistime/mistakenly swap weapons, for example swap Mesmer staff to sword/shield, I have 10 second recharge on all staff skills. Matters more for some professions than others (thief), but it’s a ridiculously long recharge duration that completely ruins a 1v1 if mistimed.

Changing the game because you keep fatfingering your buttons is a bad idea.

On the other hand, why can you swap weapons in .25s? It should take 1.25-1.5s instead. A weapon swap should be slow and obvious to the opponent as it happens, not something that happens in the blink of an eye.

tl;dr It’s backwards, recharge is excessive, swap time should be much longer.

Why? Changing weapons changes the entire frame, posture and animation set of your character. It is one of the biggest tells in the game.

Gw2 gvg can still work without dedicated healers, all you need is strong team support mixed into two or three players setup. Will also require everyone watching each other and the enemy aswell, which should always happen.

I kinda think at the moment that the best thing that can happen to GW2 is getting more game modes in, and a lot of them.

Conquest, conquest, conquest, conquest with bosses, conquest with a flag, conquest on toast with a glass of conquest, augh.

Need something different than the 5v5 conquest model because at the moment it seems incredibly hard to actually fit a dedicated support into your team.

What went wrong with gw2 pvp?

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

Three problems.

1. Tools missing.
One of veewee’s posts lately said that the game still doesn’t have a pause feature. It still doesn’t have that. It’s kinda sucky. ESPAWTS umpires need tools, and arenas need those tools to sometimes happen automatically.

2. Infrequent balance.
Big blobs of balance changes every 6 months is not good enough. A high tempo of shaves fortnightly or monthly keeps the meta from getting stale.

3. Infrequent expansions.
The game has not had a team queue suitable map added since 2012. Twenty. Kittening. Twelve.
Since release, there has been the addition of one healing skill and five traits for each class. Otherwise, only one ability has been added, which is Tainted Shackles. In the meantime, compare it to Big Fatty WoW; a game with an incredibly slow patch cycle is now working up to releasing a new expac.

Gold/Gem exchange rate is making me sad

in Black Lion Trading Co

I think the rising gold:gem ratio is natural. Inflation is a very powerful force, and the supply of gems was significantly artificially inflated during the first few weeks when the Trading Post was down. It’ll eventually stabilize, or it’ll continue to rise, at which point we’ll see more sinks.

Gold to gems is not intended to be a stable transaction. Real money to gems is supposed to be stable.

Collaborative Development

Sarrs.4831

I don’t know if a single thread would be the go. There are more than a few hot-button issues, at least on the WvW side; having a consistent dialogue on each of those would be good, but having a single thread try to encompass them all would be ineffective, I feel.

How about this then? We create a forum thread on the main forum to discuss high level aspects of the game with Colin and I, and meanwhile on this thread people put forward ideas of how to move forward with a process for collaborative development from the forums? Then a method can be picked and we go from there?

Chris

And you toot the horn for people to do the same on spvp and wvw forums, I’m guessing, and those threads branch out from there? That sounds like it could work.

Throwing my chips in on the ‘collaborative design’; first things first, we really need to get access to your brains before launch day. This blow-by-blow dialogue we have in these last few pages is pretty solid. There was Josh Foreman talking about SAB W2 as well; that was great. This kind of dialogue really helps to show that there are people with real investment in the game on the other side, and it’s not just us.

{PVP} GW2 Needs Focus, not Customization

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I. Definitions

Focus
Game balance in GW2 where each class has a defined role that only one other class can do. Each class is sought after based on roles and the competence of the player to accomplish those roles. The roles ought to be easy to learn but difficult to master, so that new players aren’t alienated and veterans aren’t bored of how easy it is.

Customization
The current game balance of throwing an enormous wad of options at each class, of which only a small fraction will be used. The roles are unclear, because they are supposed to be decided upon by the playerbase, not the developers. Build becomes more important than skill, because your ability to pick the best possible options in each slot matters more than your execution of them.

I want to stop right here because these aren’t definitions; they’re observations and assertions. If we’re to take these as definitions, their value is very questionable, as you’ve defined ‘Focus’ to be inherently good and ‘Customization’ to be inherently bad. This puts the rest of what you’re saying on very shaky ground.

Different Raid Difficulty Would Satisfy Most

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

People quitting is in no way an objective metric of any one game system.

So you’ve just kinda stumbled right out the gate here by saying this. If this were true, ANet would not be able to conclusively say that raids have helped player retention.

But they did say that, so what’s going on?

People don’t quit over any single system, they quit because of multiple elements interacting. Determining exactly why people quit in a very complex calculation,

So assuming this is right, it’s not really very complex. You just count up the reasons people quit and then you look at which reason occurs the most often and tada, you have your culprit.

One of those reasons was the lack of difficult content. That’s why raids were implemented.

but just counting people who ragequit stating a single issue as the reason is meaningless.

This is a reductionist strawman.

No more DBL please

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

Maybe read the whole conversation then you’ll have a clue.

I have been paying attention to this conversation since this set of WvW beta features began.

If players stopped playing the game after HoT and the DBL, then they weren’t here to vote 7 months later, hence the poll is a self selecting sample, then when you add troll votes from PvE players, the effect of threats there would be no more maps if DBL got voted out, etc, well.

That is an excellent theory.

Do you have any evidence to indicate that what you suggest happened actually happened?

No but you are right, WvW since HoT has been a massive success and exactly what WvW players wanted, which is why the population collapsed to the point you’ve had what are effectively server merges. /sarcasm

Sloppy strawman. Out out out.

Master of Corruption - worst trait ever.

in Necromancer

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

33% cool down reduction is not a major positive outcome, it’s average for a trait.

No, it’s a major positive outcome and it’s well above average for a trait. The trait affects 6 skills, unlike a lot of utility -CD effects, and it reduces CDs by 66% more than any other basic CD reduction trait (not looking at stuff which is more complicated, like mesmer Pistol or Torch traits). Just on that, it’s way stronger than most other CD-reduction traits.

The skills it affects are some of the strongest skills in the game; even if you taking only CC, you should be considering taking MoC.

Stacking more conditions on yourself is not a negative as a necromancer provided you don’t spam your utilities like a goon. You have high health and can take the damage. You have condition-sending skills which mean that giving yourself more conditions can actively help you.

Master of Corruption is not the ‘worst trait ever’. Frankly, as far as raw power goes, it’s probably one of the best traits. As far as game design goes, it’s one of the best traits, as it and the Corruption school at large play very well with risk-reward decision making. As far as flavor goes it’s pretty much perfect.

[Thief] Vital Shot

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

The point is that P/D has easier access to Sneak Attack than P/P AND benefits more from using it. Additionally, condition damage is more passive which means you don’t have to stand still and channel something to generate it AND it synergizes really well with Caltrops, especially in PvE. These are all reasons why P/D works better.

so basically p/d’s good. we know. in fact, it’s a very good reason not to adjust Vital Shot because buffing p/d’s 1 skill to do 33-50% more direct damage would be a pretty huge buff.

WvW Minion Master?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I play MM Power Reaper and I find it reasonably powerful. I don’t have any videos but I’ll quickly run you through the build.

Bloodbag/bonefiend/shadowfiend/“Rise!”/Flesh Golem
Full Zerk’s, some Knight’s accessories, Pack runes (Durability is also a very strong option)
Greatsword (Might/Battle), Axe/Warhorn (Might/Air)
Death(Top/Top/Top), Blood(Bottom/Bottom/Bottom), Reaper(Top/Top/Top)
Scoop of Mintberry Swirl Icecream (feel free to experiment but this is what I run)

You’re wearing mostly full Zerk’s but you have very good sustain; enough sustain that anyone who isn’t also running a full damage spread may have a difficult time applying enough damage to you. Vampiric, Vampiric Aura and Ice Cream give you huge health returns with each firing up to three times, and Blighter’s Boon carries a lot of weight when you’re running a runeset and sigils that fire multiple boons or are consistently applying extra boons.

Clearing Camps is a 5-second job and you don’t need to bother dealing with LOS or anything like that, even on a fully upgraded camp. Just stand on one of the Scouts and use your Greatsword 5 to hit the other Scout. Every other mob will either run to you or your Bone Fiend, so hopefully that’s right next to you. You’re extremely strong in this situation with Gravedigger returning something in the field of 1.5k HP each swing and dealing massive damage if you have enough targets. Overall, you have the sustain to solo pretty much everything, up to and including DBL Keep and Tower Lords (including the stunspam ogre) and the SMC lord.

Don’t underestimate your axe. Because you have multiple effects running off it, including all your Vampiric effects and an Air sigil, your swings aren’t weak. Axe 3 will also give you back a healthy amount of LF through Blighter’s Boon. It’s an effective ranged pressure option.

Because of how “Rise!”, Gravedigger and your Leech effects work, you are drastically stronger inside of an enemy camp than you are outside of one. You can effectively ignore a lot of encounters against bunkery builds (Dire, basically) by moving into an enemy camp. A meaty portion of the build is using NPCs which are <50% as Gravedigger refreshers and extra Shambling Horrors while you attack players.

I won’t go over the specifics of every matchup but your main weaknesses are thieves and berserkers. Thieves have the DD build that you really have no answer against unless you slot Spectral Wall, which you should have an entirely separate build for, and they also have the mobility and dodges to avoid your attacks- because your sustain is based on leech, not being able to consistently leech off them makes them tricky. Berserkers exploit Necromancers’ lack of Stability and dodges and usually have the AoE and high pressure to sweep your minions, leaving you defenseless. Keep in mind that these are only really unfavorable matchups if you are not in an objective; you can level the playing field by entering an enemy camp, which will re-enable your sustain by giving you NPCs to farm. This can also easily trick players who don’t understand your build; they might think that you entering the camp is an opportunity to apply more pressure from melee, or they might make other mistakes which will allow you to kill them. The capture circle is also an advantage to you; they obviously won’t want to leave it, which means they can’t kite you.

It’s a fun build and you can do a lot of very fast clearing with it, especially on DBL. If you have full zerks’ ascended, including the appropriate weapons, you have everything you need to give it a try.

DGC 1: Movement skills as "skill-shots"

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

And your “solution” preserves the skill-filter that is the GW2 targeting system. It’s an additional step that a player must complete before dealing most ranged damage instead of simply being able to judge distances, timing and player movement, and then using a skill accordingly.

Yeah, that’s the goal. Make suggestions that are feasible to implement.

To implement your assortment of suggestions that you’ve stacked atop of one another, the game would have to have nearly every aspect redesigned, including camera behavior, hit detection, netcode, etc… At that point, you may as well just make an entirely new game.

Do you think Raids in GW2 were a bad idea?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

No. It’s not like that at all. If we’re going to use that analogy, it’s like you don’t make enough to go to Taiwan

Hold it right there.

You don’t need to go to Taiwan for a holiday. It’s not a hardship. It’s a holiday. That’s the point. If someone says “oh woe is me my life is terrible I can’t afford to go to an exotic foreign country for my vacation” they don’t get an ounce of sympathy from me.

Similarly, you don’t need the rewards from raiding for much of anything. Skins do literally nothing for you mechanically. Legendary armor is a convenience, and is probably going to be more expensive to make than it will be to simply make ascended armor of each of the relevant classes (basically just Zerks and Viper’s). There’s no argument to make that Legendary armor is anywhere near required.

Calling “I have to pay for a raid clear!” a ‘hardship’ is taking the kitten. You’re playing a video game and you’re calling your inability to obtain pixels a hardship.

[PvE] Distance based damage needs to go

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

The optimal state for all players (using direct damage) already is melee range. While I’m sure some find that to be dreadfully monotone, that’s how it is.

That’s the least of the game mode’s problems. PvE has huge problems; there are two entire skill classes which are completely useless, control and condition. Tons of weapons have already been thrown out by Defiance and the condition cap; what’s two more skills with mechanics that slightly don’t jive with group play?

Keeping range open versus opponents is always going to be desirable in some circumstances, especially in PvP modes. Maintaining range is a benefit in and of itself, and does not require a contrived damage mechanic to make it desirable. Contriving a “your damage stinks at shorter ranges” mechanic to “enforce” staying at range seems unnecessary.

A “your damage stinks at shorter ranges” mechanic is exactly what Mesmer GS needs. If it wasn’t there, it would be a melee weapon, because of the bouncing sword.

Spectate Mode should be removed from Hot-join

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

At what point are you seeing players join teams from spectator mode? Rewards are based on time played on a team, so are people forgoing partial rewards to be on the winning team?

They are. It’s a fairly easy system to exploit.

Wait until your (undoubtedly losing) team is 1 man down; not enough to cause a rebalance
Enter spectator mode, causing your team to be 2 men down, causing a rebalance
Wait for the rebalance to occur
Join the winning team.

If you’re mainly focusing on getting reward track credit, it’s the way to go. You have to lose 300 or more rank points before it becomes a non-viable tactic, and by that point, the match is almost over. A team will usually have gained enough score advantage from their manpower advantage to pull ahead at about the two minute mark.

Few suggestions to try to fix it;

1. Make hotjoins 8v8. A 7v8 is at a significantly smaller disadvantage than a 4v5.
2. Base earned points more in participation.

WvW - How would you improve

in WvW

Sarrs.4831

- Account wide WXP stuff. Just make that entire page all account-wide. We’ve done this song and dance before.

- A deeper building upgrade system with more room for improvement. At the moment it sounds incredibly hardcoded which is not a good thing, because buildings are basically the core of a game which changes pace as it progresses. It’s like playing Starcraft except you’re not allowed to build anything beyond a Cybernetics Core/Academy/Hydralisk Den.

- Defensive siege upgrades (cannon/oil/mortar) aren’t placed by the 1/2/3 upgrades at the Quartermaster, but unlocked instead. You can attach any of these siege weapons into sockets at relevant positions- You can place a Burning Oil on any long wall edge, Cannons on any wall edge and Mortars on any wall.

- A counter of some kind to Defense Against Guards/Guard Killer. Just have a world ability that gives you a chance to strip stacks with each attack.

- “Fortify” walls using supply. On a full health wall/gate, “repair” is replaced with “fortify”, which reduces all damage taken by the wall by 1% per stack, up to 20 stacks. Removed via structural vulnerability.

- Rewards scaling. Taking a 1700/1700 keep should give you insanely huge amounts of Dragonite Ore/loot/etc.

- Single-player WvW-exclusive stuff. Say; a utility-skill Sapper Kit which you can earn as any class that you spend a few WXP points on to unlock. Give its 1-5 WvW-exclusive stuff that consumes supply, that you unlock by going deeper in the line; say, the 2 plants a large bomb that causes siege damage, but consumes supply. The 3 lets you repair siege. The 4 and 5 might be permanent versions of some basic siege, or traps.

Remove Fight to Survive from WvW

Without looking deeply into it, I think the only problem with the downed state in WvWvW(in PvP in general, even) is Rallying. It allows you to completely ignore defense in favour of pure offense to kill opponents and cause Rallies.

There are some imbalances that need to be addressed; some classes have great 2s and 3s, other classes not so much. I’m sure some people could pick out which ones they are; I don’t know all of them. The only one that I can immediately think of is Warrior 3 in conjunction with their Discipline trait that allows them to rally while using it; that can turn close fights into easy wins, though I might not be dealing with it properly.

Lower the Rank Requirement for Armor

How nice that you ignore my whole post and come back with a 1 liner. Really makes your point clear.

The first line of your argument should be the fundamental premise of it; a summation of the points which you are going to explain & justify to convince your audience.

When the fundamental premise of your argument is demeaning everyone who disagrees with you, it speaks more of you as a person than it does of the people who disagree with you, or their position.

More dailies needed per day

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sarrs.4831

Try PvPing or WvWing.

Almost every day there’ll be either WvW Veteran Creature Slayer, WvW Land Claimer or WvW Big Spender.

Vet Creature, find the 3 beast spots and kill them. They’re just veterans, easy to kill.
Land Claimer, find a Sentry and capture it. It’s easy to kill.
Big Spender, if you have a guild hall with a T1 WvW hut, you can spend badges to get a Badge of Tribute and then TP it.

Also save PvP reward flasks for days when PvP Reward Earner is the daily, and use the flasks to fill it.

Dailies are supposed to get you out of your comfort zone to at least a small extent. Go do things you wouldn’t normally do.

5 Dragonite from keeps, 30 from Orr Temples?

in WvW

Sarrs.4831

Flipping paper keeps as we were yesterday is a lot faster than waiting for Temple runs to start.

I think this is what these numbers are tuned around.

What if it were possible to adjust the rewards depending on how well upgraded an objective is? My 2c. WvW building upgrade system needs revisions overall.

CDI- Character Progression-Horizontal

So from what you’ve described, Chrispy;

- New skills
- New traits
- New weapons
- Location-specific skill unlocks
- Minidungeons with events in them
- Loredumps
- Fancy titles.

I’m not seeing how this subclass system is more than the sum of its parts, myself, and it seems to ultimately culminate in something similar to the badge next to your name when you get 100% world completion. If new skill releases are tied into the Living World content, then that would be fantastic and cool and excellent because when skills are given grounding in the world, they become that much cooler. I think, though, that a formal system like subclassing would be an unnecessary restriction, and either a system that is quickly neglected or a system that adversely affects the story to fit into it.

No team-based ranked mode seems like a bizarre choice.

I think having both a solo/duo and 5man team queue options, which are eligible for ranking (possibly on separate tracks) could be interesting. Whether that is viable in terms of playerbase though I am not sure.

Upcoming Stat Changes in the Q3 Balance Update

So raids will be 16% harder… Ty for killing my motivation. Just made 6th viper set, so that when i do raid I would be fully geared nope.

Also with the addition of power precision ferocity AND condi damage gear, ty for combining that with viper. It’s a kill to my gear, as that Grievers gear (of what the name is) is new meta… Ty Anet.

So in conclusion: 100% condi duration (clearly meant to be achieved by lots of classes) is killed… ty so much anet. And you think power has just as good food? Power has some things that are really strong for it (like decreased stun duration) wich is useless for most condi. This change is just a overreaction to the current raid status. (and making raids actually worse).

why not just chill for a lil bit and wait for the rest of the balance changes

[Idea] Spectral walk needs SUPERSPEED.

I think Superspeed is a bit much.

If I were to add anything to Spectral Walk, I would probably give it “while under the effects of Spectral Walk, ignore Crippled, Chilled and Immobilized”.
