[PvE] Returning player: how are classes now?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

Every single class in this game besides necromancer is good for instances like dungeons and fractals. Ele and thief are your top dps classes, guardian, mesmer and engi are your utility “carry” classes if pugging. Warriors have nice utility and are easy to play, rangers have nice utility but are more challenging to play because of the sword auto.

Terrahero is just blowing things out of proportion, most groups aren’t like that at all, and people who want to stack warriors and guardians are just bad at the game.

If you, say, couldn’t see the difference in execution between SC killing the COF story champion with the weapon summons and other guilds doing the same thing I don’t know what to say.

Over and over again people stacked, used fiery greatswords and still got destroyed, so that should probably ring a few bells in your head that there’s a little more to it than stack + fgs, you’re just choosing to conveniently ignore the finer parts of the tactics – let alone the team splits for COF story and AC story which probably 99.9% of people had never even seen performed until that day.

Things You Hate Seeing Other Mesmer Do?

What you do for those examples is switch classes.

No matter what you do, mesmer on crystalline entities and brie is an absolute abomination, complete garbage, and feels terrible to play because you’re capped at doing half of your potential damage.

- Mesmer should mind wrack at the end of a fight, yes.

- Most likely if you have four warriors channeling a hundred blades at the same time it’s either the start of the fight (vuln is capped due to axe 2/mace 4) or they switched back off their axe mid-fight after using cyclone axe and the boss has 16 vuln. Or…. they’re camping greatsword, which in addition to rending strikes will have pretty solid vuln uptime anyway. If you wanted to actually interrupt a boss to keep them channeling, take daze mantra, easy. “Go through 2 stacks of defiant” is just you being extremely specific to try and find an example which would fit your diversion example perfectly, but that will basically never happen.

- Sure, shatter before an AOE.

Mesmers rarely shatter in a PvE context because -

1. most people don’t main it so don’t think about it
2. mesmers are basically garbage tier so whether a class doing 500 dps can now do 501 dps is basically irrelevant in the grand scheme of a fight.
3. most people are lazy

I didn’t take any statement out of context, they were just giving the usual anti-good player vomit that infests this entire game and it deserves an equally stupid response.

Dissolving the Zerker meta

But that is exactly how it is now. Certain weapons are dps losses but because of the utility we may use them – take for example focus on mesmer, the phantasm has average DPS but it offers projectile reflection and mob positioning. Warriors may use axe/warhorn because you may might stack directly on a boss and need the blast finisher so as opposed to the vuln from off-hand mace. Scepter is more DPS on guardian but sword has projectile absorption and blind (which also causes vuln if traited). Eles have weapon sets with better might stacking but worse DPS, worse might stacking but better DPS, higher DPS but reliant on fire fields from external sources and so forth.

Having weapon favouritism because you “like it” literally sounds like the worst idea I have ever seen and just sounds like you want to run whatever the hell you want, to hell with what is best for the party. The fact of the matter is this:

Doing dungeons (unless soloing obviously) is a group effort. If you want to be selfish – run whatever you want. If you see yourself as a team player, run a group-centric build. This means traits, weapons and gear. There is nothing wrong with certain builds and gear being favoured – you’re not actually being stopped from running what you want unless you intend on joining a party focused around clearing the instance quickly – in which case then you run in to conflict, and you either bend to the whims of the group or you leave. There is nothing wrong with this. They are playing how they want, you can play how you want – it’s a win/win. Homogenising builds serves no real purpose.

Hatred of the support role?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

By support i mean stuff like mass weakness,

Used extensively in high level fractals via skale venom, warrior warhorn blast, thief sword auto, etc.

AOE crowd control

Warrior tremor, guardian binding blade, mesmer mantra of distraction, magic bullet, thief pistol whip, etc.

actual damage misdirection

reflects are rampant in dungeons and fractals.

Whats sad is prety much nobody care about it jump into the frey and kill them nonetheless because why would you waste time rupting the healing warrior and preventing that drummer from playing?

Because the dredge applies the protection too frequently for it to be worth interrupting.

Lack of ennemy control currently isnt punishing enought, some ennemy party should be insanely more difficult to kill if left able to do whatever they please in battle

Try not reflecting risen elementalists, try not dealing with ascalonian elementalists, try ignoring illusionists, try ignoring kaeyi when fighting tazza (if you aren’t able to pull tazza separately), try ignoring the mobs in CM throughout the entire dungeon. The elites in dungeons can actually tear you apart if left unattended.

How do you know that? Open world events scale dependent on the number of people, and remember that in zergs it will be full of gs mesmers, bearbow rangers and zero dps cleric heal guardians. Now put one optimised berserker player, or even 5 (so the event doesn’t scale up) and I’m pretty sure if it’s like the arah giants they’ll blaze through it like its nothing.

zerk meta solution

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

People need to stop looking at the stat combo and look at the traits, that’s where the actual builds are. In organised groups we run a support warrior with empower allies (or even phalanx strength if using low-might compositions or fractals), our guardians take support traits in virtues rather than more in zeal and points in valor for extra DPS, our mesmers can either trait for DPS or reflect support, and eles have a ton of builds, dps, might stacking, conjure builds, etc.

So generally what happens is that we have five characters in berserker gear, but we’ll have a warrior and guardian using support builds while the other three can just go pure DPS traits.

i like how literally this entire thread is a bunch of pvp heroes and theres like zero pve balance discussion

All classes can spam 1 equally as effective in the zerg clusterkitten of their living world releases. So no problems there.

i’m on about dungeons.

we currently have six solid classes out of eight – engineers need some sort of passive buff equivalent to something like empower allies, and necromancers just need team utility full stop. ranger sword auto needs to be fixed to not lock you in place for pve – and if anet sort this out then it’ll cut down a lot on class discrimination.

it would also be nice to get their opinion on the state of skills with large AOE like meteor shower, ice bow 4 – these two skills, especially the bow have massively scaled up damage against large bosses – and then there’s fiery greatsword which desperately needs to be forced to have a target for the fiery rush.

Why do you need balance in PvE? Really who cares if someone made a build that could take down lupicus is 2 hits. its PvE. You are not fighting monster that WANT to kill you. Unlike other gameplays such as WvW and PvP.

because not all classes bring something unique to instances and so there’s a lot of discrimination. ANet need to give engineers and necros something unique to make them worth taking.

Nobody uses FGS on the burrows in p3. That’s ridiculous. What you do is get 2 eles, so 4 icebows, then go in teams of two. 2x Ice Storm on the 1st burrow = insta-dea. 2x Ice Storm on the 2nd burrow = insta-dead. Then on the run to the 3rd and 4th burrows at the far end on the room, Ice Storm gets off CD for everyone, so do the same thing. There is no need whatsoever for an FGS. You should have given that ele a good scolding for using FGS where he shouldn’t have, and thus depriving the group of it for the last boss.

I’d literally boot you out my pug group if you scolded me or anyone for using an FGS at the wrong time.

Petty semantics like that are for record runs, for casual or pug runs, pretty much anything goes.

Potential solution for stacking

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

Doing damage is an exploit, why else do you think Arena Net introduced Nomad armor, the ultimate armor for real dungeon runners who don’t want to exploit by doing filthy, filthy damage.

I see the solution now: it’s to force everyone to wear Nomad armor, just like the elitists tried to make everyone wear Berserker armor. That way no one can do any damage, and we can all do dungeons the way Arena Net intended.

Oh, grow up.

Look, I get that this forum’s regulars are pro-stacking and tend to flip their kitten when it is brought up. But this goes beyond reasonable, straight past ridiculous, and over to the extreme side of sad. Please stop.

I love it. The OP can vomit his crybaby anti stacking bile and nobody says anything, but the moment someone makes a post on his level they’re called sad and told to stop. I hate this forum sometimes.

Our fault, is it? Last time I checked, it’s mostly the pro-stacking players flaunting thinly-veiled insults and making a mockery of anyone who’s not agreeing. Feel free to complain to them about the sorry state of this forum.

Edit:

I know this seems like a "let’s just be friends idea, but you deal realize that giving them hugs would involve a ‘taboo’ bit of stacking they are strongly against. “Play How I Wants” are adamantly against hugging for obvious reasons!

Hug Boon: Be friends with others for the good of the community! Affected

(This Skill may not be used while beating a dead horse.)

Cost to unlock: 1 skill point and basic understanding of game mechanics.

Case in point.

The reason we respond like this is because there have been a stupid amount of threads like this before where the OP can resolve their problem quite simply by making their own no stack group, and because whenever people offer supposed solutions they’re completely unfeasible and would either require rebuilding the game from the ground up or impose completely insane restrictions on melee play for no reason than their own personal gratification – I.e their ideas are not good for the health of the game. Imagine a friend telling you a joke – first time you laugh. They carry on doing it for months on end – the exact same joke. You will get to the point where you either ignore or openly condescend to them. This is basically this thread.

a bit like how the people who complain about “not being able to play how they want” are simply people who want to be allowed to stroll in to any pug group, regardless of description and do the dungeon, to hell with whether the lfg asked for pink armour only, elementalists only, berserker gear only and so on and so forth.

but of course to say that openly would be scummy, so these people like to hide behind phrases and buzz words to add some sort of moral supremacy to their standpoint.

There is the use of PHIW as a perjorative, of course.

Yeah, they’re kind of the exact opposite, of what’s know as the “elitist”.

How would you call an awfully geared player, who’s still knowledgable in the ways of the dungeon runner?

how about “players with suboptimal builds”?

people whine about being branded as elitists but then throw around this “PHIW” as if it’s okay for them to do it back.

Let’s think of a sentence where this could work:

1. “I’m sick of having to deal with PHYW’s getting in to my zerker only groups”

2. “I’m sick of having to deal with players bringing suboptimal builds in to my zerker only groups”

the dungeon community is branded as elitists because of the misconceptions of the majority and the actions of the few condemning this majority to being negatively labeled. why, seemingly confirm their perception by referring to lesser skilled players as “PHYW”, giving an enormous aura of supremacy to their post(s)? what do you gain out of it besides venting your frustrations?

I don’t think enough people care about how they’re perceived. being in the guild I’m in taught me that both actions and words are important, and there’s no point trying to claim you’re not something and then doing pretty much anything in your power to basically confirm to everyone else that you are what you claim you aren’t.

Dungeon running without rushing

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

Joined a group a little while ago. Newbie who wanted to go through Arah p1 without rushing through everything, thought I’d join because why the hell not. Everything up to ooze had been cleared (maybe they soloed or the party rq?), and then we killed the ooze. Tried killing the champions but it just wasn’t happening so after they wiped i just went ooc and ignored them. People tried running to entities, the newbie couldn’t make it so I helped them clear the four risen elites near the ooze (2x hunter, 1x ele, 1x mage, ez pz). We did entities, we did tar. Did Lupicus, they died so I ended up soloing phase 3 on my smegsmer. Cleared the whole path of risen elites afterwards up to the drakes/gorillas/spiders (ran through those), didn’t bother with korga, killed the jotun.

1. no boss was stacked besides tar
2. no bosses were melted in seconds
3. no questions asked about builds/gear
4. one person got a little annoyed nobody admitted to being new but we told them it was a no req group so it’s not fair to be berating people for that and they have to play content to learn it
5. it was no 3 hour marathon, ooze, tar, lupicus, jotun all done on first attempt, I had to reset entities once because they died and I had 0 dps because my class sucked and phantasms didn’t work, there was no constant waiting for people to make skips really either.

And guess what:

The group filled up pretty darn quick.

So if you actually make any sort of effort, you can get a no gear check, no stack, no experience requirement group. If you’re all new, you should probably expect a lot of pain depending on the dungeon, but most likely you’ll get a decent player joining who doesn’t want to see the party fail.

Just wanted to throw this out there – I know groups like these exist but I’ve never joined them, and it was actually an interesting change of pace clearing some of the mobs, though not something I’d get in to a habit of.

This "Meta" has to end

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maha.7902

maha.7902

Gotta go back though; speed runners aren’t the issue, the issue is random pug advertisements.

In not-optimized-even-if-geared-zerk groups the whole meta discussion is silly, it simply doesn’t matter in a meaningful way.

The funny thing is that most of the people arguing so strong on behalf of the meta are people like Spoj, who I can’t imagine spends a ton of time doing random pugs anyways.

Nope, most of us are actually the ones who pug the most – and it’s this very reason why we’re arguing so adamantly – a way I’d describe this game’s combat is “independence over interdependence” where if your team sucks you don’t have to think oh well the tank died I guess we have to reset or kick and fetch another, if you’re good enough yourself you can solo whatever is causing the party trouble. In a trinity game, if your healer dies, or your tank dies, or your dps dies … well things get very pear-shaped, and I wouldn’t want that sort of forced reliance in GW2.

To me, after reading all of this thread, it sounds like people aren’t complaining about “meta” (delete this one and it’ll be replaced with another, it’s a never ending cycle), the actual complaint is with … people. “people” discriminate against non-berserker gear. “people” call non-berserkers bad. “people” don’t want to play with “play how you wants”. The problem here is not something you solve by cutting DPS with a sledgehammer or deleting offensive gear, the problem is human nature itself, is something ANet will never be able to fix and I wish people would stop trying to argue about it .

Think about it. Let’s say that a condition guy and a “support” guy is suddenly needed in groups. what then? “lf 3 zerkers 1 support 1 condi”. Oh, they have 3 direct damage guys but I want to do direct damage … KICK. Oh, well I guess you can argue “well I guess this makes more playstyles available blahblah diversity”. But if the mobs die in exactly the same time, and all players are just maximising their own damage via rotations like usual, then how is this suddenly better? The fact that for one guy they have smaller numbers appearing on their screen and the other guy has absolutely dreadfully small numbers appearing on their screen?

I have a 2:51 Belka direct damage solo on my computer and a 2:54 condition, and I think that may have been using undead runes. Either way, my rotation on the condition one could have been improved to surpass the direct damage. I also have a condition abomination solo which is a full ten seconds faster than my best on direct damage (2:48 versus 2:59). Because, you know, I actually like trying things out before knocking on them.

Feel free to condescend it as “probably a lot easier to play”, but I’d say preventing Lupicus from purging your conditions in phase 3 if anything makes it insanely harder to play, the lack of whirlwind attack, and having a sloppy rotation making your conditions drop off causing massive loss of damage presents its own challenges.

No. People whine about Mai trin because the cannon phases are boring as hell and you can’t even block let alone dodge some of the attacks and the game makes absolutely zero effort to explain this to you. Mai trin is just plain badly designed, just how making spider boss projectiles unreflectable is bad design, you’re seeing projectiles, you put up reflect and it just goes through. Not a single word in chat all through the run, and not so much as a “bye” before kicking me out of the group once the run was finished … never thought I’d be upset by that so much, but I guess I play this game to play with people. If I wanted no communication I could just as well go back to single player games …

yeah, pretty much my own opinion

i’ve got screenshots of like the most legendary teaching run I ever did (like … a lot of screenshots) and it was legit like the best dungeon runs I have ever done even though the party was pretty bad (on a mechanical level, obviously the instance knowledge would be bad since they were new) and needed massive carrying, but speeding through things with ease with no communication since everyone knows what to do just bores me to tears.

Low Damage != Fun

GW2 is the only game I’ve seen where critical chance can approach 100%

every champion in league of legends can hit ~90%, one champion has double critical chance so he can reach cap with a lot less investment in to his build

GW2 is the only game I’ve seen where critical damage exceeds 200% of base damage

critical strikes in league do 200% damage unless you buy an item which boosts it to 250% base

GW2 is the only game I’ve seen where a temporary damage buff (Might, in this case) could/can approach the base damage of a max level character (Note: that’s the buff benefit by itself, not factoring in the synergistic benefits of critical chance/damage)

i’m pretty sure like every single game ever has builds where you can wildly exceed the base damage of a character with buffs

in league you can like double, triple, quadruple (etc.) your damage stats through damage buffs by items. baron buff used to give 40 attack damage/40 ability power which is like half of your base attack damage and I can’t remember how much the ability power is because I forgot lol

GW2 is the only game I’ve seen where the trade-off for maximizing damage still leaves players with substantial defensive options — if they’re good enough to use them

again, in league you can 100-0 burst people in like half a second and then just invuln/teleport/stealth – and like in guild wars 2 they’re all active defense mechanisms where it’s reliant on the skill of the players.

“You’re the only warrior. Can you take banner of strength too?”
“No. I need signet for dps.”

I take FGJ, disc banner and fury sig because I don’t want to compromise my DPS in a group where I expect people to eat the floor.

I also take 30/25 or 30/30 builds in to pugs.

umad?

Hammer dps is honestly just bad. I did a hambow lupicus solo and it was like 9:35 or something terrible like that.

And the GW2 combat goes on reflexes, skill and reading the environment.

Then you get fools who mash keys, don’t pay any attention and get carried by people who know what they’re actually doing.

zerk meta solution

@maha: I have no problem with them finding someway to burst it, you even mentioned guardian running staff, which is currently a big no no. At the very least it would provide a different challenge than what your average stack and spank pug is used to. If they made the stunbreak+stability trigger shortly after it’s cc’d and made it run at +25% combatspeed, I think it’d provide much more of a challenge then you seem to think.

pre-nerf Alphard and Lupicus are “a different challenge” – and how have the community responded to these? They don’t do the dungeon or they just buy the paths. Aetherblade TA path is “different” too – even worse, nobody does that besides a very small minority.

different =/= good

Hey, as another player who likes soloing champs, I know how much risk one hit can take. But that was Lupicus – this is a solo fight. Zerker or not, there was risk. I’m not talking about that – there’s ‘no-risk’ going zerker in WvW, PvE, etc. It all comes down to how much DPS can one player dish out.

You should see some of the pugs I’ve done it with. Full tank warriors soaking up bubbles, kicks, swipes, everything. Stacking toughness and vitality honestly makes a lot of the hard hitting attacks blanks. When I solo on berserker a swipe hits me for 17k, in my rabid condi solos it hits for 12k.

Whenever someone wants to try something new, general attitude is ‘shoot it down and bury the idea’. Anything not following the zerker meta, is dubbed a troll build, or ineffective. But there’s a reason why it is.

Zerker is the automatic answer to everything. “I want to use this weapon set” – go zerker. “I want to farm dungeons” – go zerker. “I want to roam in WvW” – go zerker. “I want to survive in PvE” – kill everything before it hits you. Go zerker. “I want to watch my enemies burn” – oh. Ok, go condi.

“zerker” is not the answer at all. “here is the best dps build” is the answer. This can mean berserker or assassin, it can mean scholar, strength or ranger runes. I also have a faster condi solo of a heavy armour boss (2:57) than I do with a berserker build (2:59) – conditions are very viable in solo settings.

There’s nothing that can be done to change this. The game promotes movement, quick response, and positioning. And hey, that’s great, it’s one thing I like in this game. But if you don’t get hit, why bother using any other setup that doesn’t contribute to damage?

Everyone gets hit. This is why “just dodge” tryhards annoy me – nobody mitigates 100% of the damage dealt to them. Just pug dungeons, they’ll eat the floor all the time if someone isn’t carrying them. Sure, if you can learn to mitigate damage there is no need to use a defensive setup. But if you find yourself taking damage, that’s when you can go sure, maybe I need some knights or soldiers gear. The minority of people who can mitigate most of the damage dealt to them lie in a handful of elite speedclear guilds, 99% of players aren’t at that level and I wish people would stop pretending they are – the average player in this game is bad, can’t dodge and cares more for simply getting a dungeon done than getting it done efficiently.

Lack of fun as a support

What i meant was if i could support my allies in a more interactive way. not just press utility skills and then wait for CD then rinse and repeat. Which is why i’m excited for Ventari revenant! you move your tome around to heal and you can cc big crowds and have to move around to pick up shards for heals! Supporting the group yet having fuN!

errrrr

isn’t “moving your tome around to heal and cc’ing big crowds” the same as “press utility skills and wait for their CD”?

I never asked people to run meta when I taught. If they asked for a build, sure i’d give it to them but I didn’t make it a requirement.

“Speed runners” on the LFG aren’t speed runners at all, they’re just tryhard wannabes.

Real speed run groups will go something like ele/ele/warrior/guardian and then either third ele, or maybe a thief for stealth or maybe even a ranger for frost spirit/spotter. Thief works if the dungeon has stealth sections, engineer isn’t really specialised in anything but it has competitive dps and solid utility so if you’re just doing a daily dungeon tour you can take one along just fine.

Actually what happens is people who want passive defense keep trying to force it on the rest of us while we just want to be allowed to play in peace without being harassed about “all you have to do is dodge, faceroll content blahblah no fair I want to tank”.
