Whenever a wipe occurs, I understand the temptation to pin the blame on one person to spare everyone else the anxiety of having their own performance looked at, as well as the trouble of analyzing what precisely went wrong, and that someone is almost always the guardian. More often than not, when the guardian’s blamed, he’s instantly kicked with no explanation offered. Usually if any qualifying information prefaces the kick, it’s ‘use wall’.

Now I know in some situations, e.g. the 3 champs before the final boss in Sorrow’s Embrace, a wall is near enough mandatory. There are others where the wall might be preferable for some players and their preferred strategy, but in my opinion it’s not appropriate to insist that another player accommodate that preference in their skill set, on pain of being booted from the group. One of the reasons I like this game so much more than WoW is the flexibility it allows in build selection and styles of play.
For my own part, I don’t like equipping WOR except in situations like the one above where it’s so useful as to be almost necessary. It jars against the rest of my build and the way I like to play. But way too often after a wipe someone says ‘guard, wall’, I begin thinking of a way to politely explain that I don’t like to use it before I’m kicked a few seconds later. No discussion. No alternatives considered. In many cases the player has failed to understand that the wall is only effective against projectiles and isn’t a general protective shield. Instead, the simplistic thinking is: A wipe occurred, there’s a guardian who could’ve used wall but didn’t, he must be the cause and therefore he’s out.
Don’t like this attitude. Am I alone??!!

You perform group content, and don’t fulfill the wishes of the group. They had every right to kick you. If you’d rather be selfish and run your own little build than help your group, you probably shouldn’t be doing content with parties.

I think that compared to dungeons, fracal rewards are much worse and this should change.

Well, considering that a fractal 50 usually takes about 20 – 25 minutes max, the rewards are actually not that bad.

The way I see it – just log on to a carry class and take on whoever. AP, “no noobs”, “experienced only”, it all means nothing – if noobs want to, they’ll sneak in and try to leech. You’ll get people with weird (i.e. they’re bad) interpretations of “experienced” trying to join your groups, you’ll get people with high AP who suck. I’ve had a guildie get some 18k AP ele who didn’t even know what FGS was, I had dungeon world records when I was <5k AP.

You’ll spend more time filtering out undesirables than if you just took the first four you got (maybe just make an “experienced, meta builds only” group) and then kicked people who sucked.

I dunno. If I want to play with experienced people, I play with guildies, pugs will never even be close to the calibre which we play at in guild so I don’t expect it. AP I just find a poor metric not worth using. There was a chance of us being able to show each other traits (the topic was about being able to save builds) but a bunch of people started crying saying there would probably be trait checks so ANet decided against it.

The way I see it though – if you’re actually experienced it doesn’t matter who you get, you’ll be able to pull your weight and get any party through. If you’re going to sit, waiting for experienced players it just shows you’re not as good as you think you are and you feel you need carrying.

This is nothing to do with min-maxing or meta, this is to do with weeding out people who don’t meet your requirements joining your group.

If I ask for pink gear only and someone in blue joins, I reserve the right to kick.
If I ask for soldier gear only and someone in zealot’s joins, I reserve the right to kick.
If I ask for berserker gear only and someone in apothecary’s joins, I reserve the right to kick.

This tool would be designed to make it possible for people to stop unwelcome visitors from joining their groups. We’ve already had one hero in this thread mention how they join “zerk only” groups with his tanky character, which is unacceptable and unfair on the people making the group, just how if someone writes “killing all mobs” and gets crack, elite dungeoneers who power through the dungeon in 5 minutes ignoring everything besides the strict requirements to complete the dungeon, that is unacceptable too.

It’s almost as if people in this thread don’t want it to be possible for people to play with likeminded individuals, instead people on both sides of the pond have to put up with undesirables intruding on their groups, because of some sort of “greater good” of “no discrimination” which will never ever happen as much you would all want it to because people have different standards, expectations and want to uphold those.

Also, half of the people in this thread are just ranting about things the OP already answered, so please actually read the OP before commenting.

Stacking is awful. There should be mobs that are anti stacking to make it more diverse.

Maybe you should try AC and Arah. Ascalonian necromancers fear you out of the stack, elementalists summon firestorms which serve as massive area denial. Risen illusionists drop chaos storms that pulse for 4,000 damage, give retaliation that pulses for 800 per attack if you hit them. Devastators CC you, hunters throw a deadly bouncing axe and mages cast fields that give regen to allies and pulse for like 2,000 damage or something. They have a pbaoe knockdown too. The mobs and mechanics exist, people either forget or don’t do the dungeons where they’re present.

“melee lupi” is an attempt to find decent players since it seems more reliable than “experienced”.

Hardly. 99% of the time it’s just bad players looking for a carry. The remainder is actual experienced players too lazy or unwilling to solo so they’re hoping and praying they don’t get players that suck.

Everything is already viable, just not optimal. The gap between damage output on gear stats does not need to be decreased. If you have trouble dodging or want to RP as a tank/healer you shouldn’t have damage even close to a glass cannon, you should have to gear and trait ‘properly’ if you want to output good dps otherwise there is no risk/reward.

Unfortunately being viable in this game just isn’t enough in party gameplay, thanks to the game’s community. The only way non-meta players get slots in parties in this game is if they’re lucky or make their own party (And even then I’ve heard of party leaders being kicked from their own runs for not adhering to the meta), and the community doesn’t even let them take pride in their build. They only care if they “think” your build is useful to them.

And guess how meta players get slots? Making their own parties.

Do you think “zerk only ping gear” lfgs just appear by mandate of god or something? Of course not.

Imagine it – you do a dungeon and get 1.26g. In the dungeon run you cleared two sets of four elites, got 6 t5 mats and then two powerful bloods. Your dungeon run now gave you 2.26g + other loot.

I think most MMO gamers understand GW2 is pretty much a clusterkitten of spamming skills with as little coordination as possible and still be able to get the “job” in decent timing. This game is a boring DPS race no matter what, with a meta it’s just a boring fast DPS race. I don’t think many people care about this stupid tournament that proves nothing other than I have gud muscle memory.

I agree, you should get a team together and each bag yourselves 150g and 2000 gems since gw2 pve is just faceroll ^^

If you are not part of those people, or if you are not willing to contribute to the future of competitive PvE, I would appreciate if you could step aside and let us talk as adults.

You know, I tried to go in to self imposed exile from the forum to get away from the insanity, but I think it is worth replying to this. What do you actually want? All you and select others have said is that we aren’t doing what’s best for the community (spoiler – community gives us donations and loves what we’re doing, don’t speak on their behalf thx) and that the tournaments are badly designed, yet you haven’t said anything about how it should be done. Alternatively, you could host your own. So please tell us your ideas, because I haven’t seen any and the endless crying from select individuals is extremely tedious to read.

Biggest pet part of mesmer is to Shatter! I hate seeing mesmers run around not shattering, i die a little inside when i see it not happen! Besides a clutch distortion to save their butts in a pinch. Where is your mindwracks? Diverson?!? Every build regardless of the traits are meant to be shattered at some point in a duel or team fight. Not to sit there with your Phantasms pounding away at someone. That is like a thief who doesn’t steal, a guardian who doesn’t use virtues, An ele who doesn’t swap attunements?! That is by far enough horror to kick off halloween early and is extremely aweful gameplay. Imo, i declare any mesmer who doesn’t shatter; bad.

I hate Mesmer’s who only play PU and kinda despise people who only play Shatter specs. Like you are missing out on soo many other builds Mesmer could be running! Confounding suggestions, Chaotic interruption, Healing shatter, Power Block, Mantra builds, Signit builds, clone death! Don’t stick to the meta, stray away from the normals cause Mesmer kit is wondrous and is meant to be there for you to toy with people’s mind! So get to it! Those that know me, know i am always playing something new, changing sigils around, weapons, Traits, builds.

Why does society like to condescend and despise people who excel at their speciality? It’s not even a GW2 thing, it’s rampant everywhere. Famous people get mocked for … being famous. Okay. Now that this is clear, let’s look at the other stuff you’ve written…

I almost never run with guild. Literally ask anyone in DnT right now, I literally never show up for daily dungeon tours because organised runs bore me to tears.

You talk like we’d have only one weaponset. Start in GS, switch to sword, problem solved. The more AoE, the quicker groups of trash-mobs die. And since iZerker is one of our two only AoE-phantasms… why not use it? You can switch to Sword/Focus right after, you know.

Because the interrupt on sword/pistol as second set is better imo. Open up w/warden, switch to sw/p, interrupt a damaging skill.

The rest is again something that I’ve already covered in the beginning of this post… you can’t compare DnT (or similar) with pug-groups of people who’ve never ran with speedrun-groups who pretty much spend most of their playtime in fractals and other dungeons.

Please tell me more about the speed run groups I never run with.

I know that’s not a lot compared to you guys. But I’ve done around 200 Fractals so far, and I’d say at least half of them back when Maw was the only boss-fractal. So that means I’ve probably done the Maw-fight around 30 times in total. And I’ve NEVER seen someone trying to melee those tentacles. NEVER. Not even one person in one single Maw-fight out of 30. I’m not saying it’s not possible. It’s just that… well, obviously you think just because DnT does something, everyone does it. When in fact, most players wouldn’t even get the idea to melee them.

You never thought that you could double your DPS just by dodging basic choreographs or blinding it.

Well good sir, ~60 fractals done here (basically nothing) and meleeing tentacles all the time. I feel like recording the next time I do maw just to make a point of how easy it is.

For normal mobs, then you can range them while running towards them. Charr-fractal for example, after the fight vs Dulfy. You now… run towards group, Mirror Blad and iZerker, then you’re there, switch to Sword… usually you won’t even get to summon iWarden anymore, because the mobs are already dead. Same with the next group. And so on. And even if they’re not dead yet… the additional AoE from iZerker and the Mirror Blade at the beginning doesn’t hurt anyone (aside fromt he mobs). After that, you can camp sword until they are dead. Even you should agree that mobs die quicker if you already AoE them before you’re in melee-range, and if you start out with two AoE-phantasms instead of just one.

Yeah sure, they’ll die instantly on like fractal level 1 maybe. On 49s they take longer even in optimised groups. And I feel the CC on OH pistol is worth more than the completely nonexistent “burst” on GS.

For bosses… well, let’s just say that pug-groups (aka everything that isn’t a speedrun-group) usually ends up ranging most bosses. And guess what… they die. Maybe in 5 minutes instead of 2. But they die.

Well, you know… to give a bit of an extreme example… humans also can pull trucks. Can YOU pull trucks? Humans can also fly to the moon. Can YOU fly to the moon? Not? But humanity can do that. Why can’t you? Maybe because you didn’t train for it? Maybe because you lack the know-how? Because nobody ever bothered to tell you? Because you never needed to try to find out yourself because you don’t really need to do those things to be successful?

Less hyperbole, more examples please.

Yeah Mesmer is in a bad place, and thats why a few of these tear-filled threads are good to make sure the devs notice, but how many of you here play the class for a statistical advantage over other classes?

Exactly. We play the class because it’s fun, everything else is noise.

When by playing one, our group is basically 4.5-manning a dungeon, well let’s just say I don’t like leeching. Wvw veil botting was extremely unsatisfying too. So who cares? Judging by the state of the subforum, a lot of people.

The reason I am against stacking is because it is so kitten simplistic. I`ve been a hardcore raider for years and to me this game is just childs-play, with its lack of strategy and thought required. Its hard for me to understand why ANYONE would fervently defend such a basic game design.

I see this comment thrown around a lot on the forum. Boss blitz is poorly designed. Dungeons are poorly designed. Fractals are poorly designed. PvP is poorly designed. WvW is poorly designed.

What is “bad design” and what is simply just easy or hard? A lot of us thought the classes were badly designed until we began to realise they were a lot more balanced than we thought they were. A lot of people in the general discussion/living story forums call the blitz bad design because of the anti-zerg mechanics. Personally I’d say it was good design because it discourages the hive mentality and forces people to split up and actually think for themselves. The scaling is also very linear and easily controllable and is also decently designed – if you have five people with identical dps or fifty it doesn’t really matter, you’ll melt the boss in basically the same time (but of course this never happens because co-ordinating that many players to be playing meta builds and rotations is pretty much impossible and not even needed in the first place).

Bad design on the other hand. I’d say bosses which can be completely mitigated through reflect and bosses with hard-to-tell choreographs are bad design. Take Belka for example – a completely uninteresting boss which troll knockback’s you every now and then with basically zero choreograph. Completely unfun if you haven’t learnt to position yourself so you don’t get knocked back in to a barrel (at <25% when the fire fields are basically triple stacked on each other it’s just gg) and there’s no tell for it. The projectile shield is also pointless, it seems to be punishing ranging but it’s up for like five seconds so what’s the point? Rangers gonna range, they’ll just shoot themselves for five seconds then get back to it.

A trait which locks you out of summoning phantasms but their contribution of dps is added to your actual weapon skills (so basically double your damage on weapon skills). There, Mesmer doesn’t suck anymore, mission successful.

the cleric guardian basically just sits there and brain afk tanks bosses while the whole party does basic DPS rotations over and over again which are harder to do in standard parties because of less reliable aggro.

are we having another case of the dungeon community being close minded again?

Like, I actually want to see if the loss of one guy’s damage in a party while making it possible for the rest of the team to optimise their rotations is actually a worthy trade off in the case of fractals (not dungeons obviously, stack might and delete boss in two seconds is normally what happens there). Because in my opinion, to hell with DPS theory if it isn’t even manageable in an actual game situation.

and if it’s actually less efficient to take a cleric guard, then it’s just a matter of case closed, back to using standard compositions. it’s literally a win/win either way.

Umm… my original post was talking about the complaints in the ele sub-forum, which are about ele’s build problems in three game modes. I think it’s fair to look at a class in different point of view, and not just PvE dungeons.

the build problems of being powerful in all three modes and being able to use a whole array of different weapons.

being locked in to certain traits just comes with the territory of “do I want my build to actually be decent or not” and this applies to like any game with builds ever.

Mesmer wise, they have way more builds in WvW and sPvP. I find they are very interesting. Even Sandy does not always use phantasmal builds.

“run PU, shatter or be bad” is hardly “way more builds”.

my mistake, in large scale WvW you run triple glamours and function basically as ranged DPS with your GS.

Nope. We’d blaze through the mobs instantly and the less skilled players would be put off because the trash mobs tend to be more unforgiving than the bosses.

Like I said, nothing you can think of will stop speed runners – every single change suggested will ruin the game for your average player not the speed clearer.

If you really want to relate both mechanics, at least the trinity with all the years it already have, is 3x more complex than what we have here. Consider raiding a trinity as well? have you ever thought there are games that have many years that have at least 5 different roles not just tank, heal and dps?

The current meta forgets everything about rpgs and bring nothing new. LoS/Stack/all dps, its not new… its how MMORPGS used to be BEFORE the trinity. This game cant even compete against a game with a trinity.

A game with fights that use exactly the same trinity fight mechanics is not “3x more complex” at all, in fact it basically tells you everything you need to know before fighting it – that you’ll need some sort of aggro management, you’ll need some sort of squishy damage dealers and you’ll need a guy who keeps them all up when they get low and apply passive buffs to them to make them more efficient at what they’re doing. If you go in to a GW2 fight for the first time, you don’t have that prior knowledge, you have to pick things up as you fight the enemy. It doesn’t help of course that the descriptors are completely useless.

If you don’t think the game can compete, why are you even playing anyway? “I don’t like this game’s gameplay so I’ll just carry on playing it because reasons”.

This is an interesting point. Why is it only 1 of the 4 finisher types wants players to stay close together?

Whirl finishers in light fields encourage players staying close together for cleanse, and leap finishers are just single target IIRC. I’m pretty sure whirling inside a boss with an ethereal field would cause a lot of confusion stacks too.

I think it all boils down to, this game’s combat is designed for PvP and PvP alone, which is the vast majority of balance decisions are made with PvP in mind. They just shoehorned PvP combat into PvE and called it good, thus we are left in a situation were over half the elements of the combat system are woefully underutilized.
Things like Active flanking and movement, simply aren’t needed, and most enemies are about as easy to read as goombas and more that willing to charge blindly to thier deaths.

I’m sure when I was doing pure axe Lupicus, had jack all for endurance and had to basically sidestep swipes I wasn’t actively flanking or using movement at all. Definitely not.

My advice if you want depth in combat, go into PvP. You won’t find anything here that won’t eventually become mindnumbingly dull.

afk on points with bunker builds is clearly the epitome of depth. in fact, can we not even throw that word around? People use it to try and sound like their opinions are informed, but it literally means nothing.

We already use smoke fields and reflects, an we don’t need retaliation or tanky gear. This is just a case of people wanting THEIR gear to be desired in dungeons and want anet to make completely random changes in the vain hope of making their stats and builds wanted. The fact of the matter is, people keep asking for intelligent mobs with varied attacks. The closest you have to that are dredge, and almost nobody likes fighting them. Be careful what you wish for.

I think you misread my question. I meant which specific dungeon, in your opinion, relies on trash mobs to provide the basis of the path’s difficulty?

I’m just curious because I’ve never felt that way about a path and want to hear your perspective.

AC, CM, SE, COF, Arah all have punishing trash mobs. I mean if you compare the difficulty of arah p2’s brain afk bosses to the trash runs …

I’d say Lupi still provides the biggest chunk of difficulty in Arah. I’ve run past every piece of trash in that dungeon without a problem, but still haven’t gotten Lupi solo. These mobs are part of the “skipping mechanics” in the dungeons, but I wouldn’t say that they provide an unreasonable amount of the dungeon’s difficulty.

And I’m not sure what Slowpokeking agrees with me about? I didn’t make any statements, I asked a question…

In any case, completely stripping the mobs from dungeons would be a poor solution to any problem they’d cause.

You say that, but then I’ve done arah pugs where I’ve literally sat at magecrusher/shoggroth/abomination for a good half an hour with rage quits in between waiting to see who can actually make the trash run. Then there’s the final bosses of p1 and p2 which pugs are pretty terrible at too. But then, when they get to these bosses to fight them it’s mostly fine (except stargazer, people can’t dodge that guy even if their life depended on it).

the only time you should ever get upset in pug runs is if people do things just so inexplicably stupid or are just outright sabotaging the group – minor errors, I say just get over it, pugs aren’t going to ever be perfect.
