Siege Troll Discussion

First off, thank you John and Anet for finally posting a thread on this issue. I haven’t had time to read all 6 pages and I’m on my way to work, so can’t say much, but I was excited to see this thread. This is a tough problem to combat through game mechanics as I am sure you see. I hope you do come up with a workable solution, however in the meantime, I hope you have banned the most infamous offenders while working towards a programmed deterrent. Anet knows who the most dedicated siege trolls are because they have been reported by many people during this season and last.

Please ban these guys.

Thanks again John. Your time and attention to this issue is greatly appreciated by the vast majority of the WvW community.

So Overwolf is an approved addon now?

I do believe all GW2 Overlays require you to be running in full-screen windowed (or simply windowed) to allow the application to overlay itself properly. If you run in full-screen mode, the application will not be able to display itself on top since GW2 will be on front of everything.

Hey there!

Ari here, Community Manager for Overwolf and the guy who made those videos.

Overwolf runs in fullscreen mode as it works very different to the other overlays out there. We inject into the game without altering the games files or anything (which is why SweetFX sometimes messes Overwolf up).

The way we work complies with the ToS of Guild Wars 2.

The Daily Dolly app works like pen and paper, it does not read anything automatically and requires user input (you have to manually click the paths of the dungeons or crafting and such) to make it do anything.

Every app for Guild Wars 2 uses the official API and does not read any game memory, edit game files or do anything of that sort. Information received from the game isn’t actually receieved from the game, but from clever use of the Guild Wars 2 API.

If the function isn’t in the official API, then there isn’t a way to do it without workarounds. For example, the Daily Dolly. Since the Guild Wars 2 API doesn’t have a function for reading dungeon completion and rewards and things like that, the developer created a pen and paper app that requires a user to input that themselves. The app has in it that Path 1 of AC rewards X gold and X tokens and then crosses it off, then if you click on a second path it adds the 2 and so on, almost like an excel worksheet.

Hope that answers some questions! Feel free to ask me more anytime you want.

Overlays aren’t add ons. They’re overlays and not against the terms of service. There’s nothing you get from this that you can’t have from having a second monitor and a calculator.

We’ve been using overlays for a long time already…at least I have.

Is there any sort of red post saying that overlays are okay? I just dont want to get myself into any sort of trouble.

Overlays don’t alter the game at all. Anet doesn’t even have a way to know you’re using the overlay. It does nothing more than a second monitor would do for you. It doesn’t give you in game advantage. It doesn’t change the code. It literally breaks no rules.

First off, join the Desolation Community forum at http://www.desospeak.com.
Register, then follow the instruction to be verified as a bona fide Desolation defender.

Download and install TS3. You will find instructions of what to do next in order to be vrified on TS which will get you access to the WvW channels (you will need to get into WvW as part of this step).

Once you’ve been verified and have the appropriate permissions, you will be able to get to the channels where you can become an integral part of the Desolation WvW community.

The tournament will take place on EB and the borderlands.. EotM is not part of the tourney. There will be plenty to do: join the open tag (Blue dorito), become a member of a snipe team, help out by scouting, or become a Yak-Nanny.

Thanks .. and enjoy the rollercoaster!

This accusation gets tossed around a lot – that certain people who post such high praise for Anet’s decisions might be rewarded in some way. I haven’t reached a decision on this yet, so I thought the best approach is just to come right out and ask.

Will someone at ANet please tell the rest of us if you reward certain people for their forum comments? If you could just issue a flat out denial then that might diminish the number of accusations, especially right now.

We do not pay players to post on the forums nor do we make use of shill or sock puppet accounts. Honestly, I’m surprised if anybody takes these accusations seriously.

Exactly how much of this was influenced from KongZhong? Because by the looks of it, the direction you are taking this game is being HEAVILY influenced by metrics from CHINA GW2….

Testing was done predominantly in the west focused on players who played guild wars 2 today, people who played gw2 at launch and left, people who heavily play other MMORPG’s, and people who heavily play RPG’s. We did all of this testing ourselves in the west, I’ll just kill right now that this is a system developed for China. It’s a system developed for the global game, period, because retaining new users at early levels wasn’t just a china problem we needed to solve, it’s a problem in the west too.

Our friends over in China did their own tests as well and saw nearly identical results to us in retention differences when testing our old systems to the new. And as I said, if we find on live all our testing was wrong, we’re not going to let it sit there, our goal is to teach and excite better at low levels to keep more players, not the other way around!

I’d also be very careful attempting to apply stereotypes to western or eastern gamers and attempting to lump them all into one pile. Just like we have a very diverse community of western gamers who play and enjoy games in different ways you’ll find in the east the same is also true.

As for content for level 80 people, I agree, we need more awesome stuff there too. However if you don’t keep people at early levels, you don’t have level 80 players to ship content to, and our development team was asked to fix the very clear issue of early player retention. Anyway as for level 80 this is a post about new player experience specifically, not level 80 stuff. There is a great CDI going on right now about guilds in (and more coming soon) where you can help give feedback on what you’d like to see the level 80 guild experience be in particular!

Proposal Overview
Automatic guild representation for alt characters

Goal of Proposal
When a new character is created, a lot of people don’t know or don’t remember that they have to then re-represent their guild on that character. It’s a minor inconvenience and can also lead to missing discussion/questions in guild chat.

Proposal Functionality
Upon new character creation, have that character automatically begin repping whichever guild you were last representing.

Associated Risks
People used to the current method might not necessarily want to represent immediately. The guild you were last representing might not be your main guild. There might be some weird underpants gnomes way to exploit this to get influence or some form of personal gain.

Correct me if I’m wrong… But people are saying that you can’t dodge with low level characters anymore. Is this ACTUALLY true?

This is incorrect, you should be able to absolutely dodge at any level. There is a lot of misinformation (and some bugs) going around about systems the game teaches you about, but are totally available from level 1 if you want to go do them. The level many of the things the new level up system tells you about doesn’t mean they are unlocked at that level, it simply exists as a reminder if you haven’t learned it by then. Feel free to dodge away! You can also go do jumping puzzles any time you want for example, the game just gives you a heads up they exist at level 21 if you haven’t found one by then, etc.

We’re also seeing a lot of bugs, and unintended functionality folks are reporting in a number of the threads on the new player experience that don’t align with what we announced the system to be. We’re working on identifying and resolving all of these issues as quickly as possible, some of the absolutely legitimate concerns folks are bringing up (like some of the bigger issues with alts) are not intended and appear to have been flagged incorrectly when they moved between development regions. Fixes incoming soon as we can identify everything.

Please continue to give feedback and suggestions, we very much appreciate it as it’s allowed us to identify a lot of not intended issues, as well as bugs.

Thanks!

I hope so. I would hate to think that they follow the IRS method of data storage….. :P

Haha right? That’s an insane amount of data.

It’s true we could throw more money at Ready Up to bring up the quality. But we would rather keep those dollars where they belong, in developing the game. Karl would be the first to admit he isn’t the greatest in front of the camera, but he does the Skill Bar because it is something he knows well.

As others have said above, we’d rather have Karl talking about (and showcasing) the changes because, having worked on the changes, he is intimately familiar with them. We prefer this method over hiring somebody who had nothing to do with the changes read them off.

Additionally, Karl and I recorded those segments on a very tight timeframe, sometimes only finishing them the day before or day of the episode they were in, so we didn’t have time for extensive post-production work. We hope to get further ahead of these the next time around, but given that we both have other responsibilities here, there is only so much time to go around.

New Browser Engine, and what's to come.

To that end, we’re introducing a completely new browser engine into the game.

Could this mean they could build an interface so we could get in-game access to the wiki?

And even more interesting, could we get lore books through that interface? We’ve seen the writers saying that they’re limited by the dialog UI for the stories they can add in the game. But if they can get an interface for somethings like books, so that when we go to the Priory Library we could read an entire book by scrolling and not clicking to see the next two lines, that could be pretty amazing, no?

My thoughts: These guys develop games. They aren’t actors or mouth pieces for Anet. In fact, I think the tactic works on a player level; I don’t want to see someone I can’t relate to as a player give me some scripted crappola about great changes will be … I want to see the biggest gamer nerds doing that. That for me is credibility. These guys like what they do, and care about it.

Did my last fractal today and made my Mawdrey which I love. Mawdrey II is also very cute and very hungry. Sure hope it doesn’t do a Tamagochi on me if I fail to feed it, lol.

I do have to say this was actually enjoyable to do with the variety of things you had to collect or make to do this. While fractals may not be my favorite thing to do, I learned a lot with the ones I did, got some nice loot and did not feel that that part of it was much of a grind. Foxfire now that was a grind, lol.

Fractals you have to take with a grain of salt. Everyone I met was pretty nice, did see some who quit, I assume in frustration, but overall it was not a bad experience. In several we had to work hard to complete the fractals but everyone stuck it out and we eventually did. I think that made me feel that it was more of an achievement than if it had been easy.

Overall very interesting experience and definitely worth it. For me this one was a winner.

My Little Mawdrey

Paradox.1380

I just got finished with all of the steps to create this lovely little creature. When I first found out about it my first thought was “ooh a pretty plant for my Sylvari Mesmer!” So that was my motivation.

The first parts were admittedly a little tedious and kinda boring, but then I got up all of the components to make it and that was when I got my first taste of connection to it. Crafting this took me to several maps and I got to revisit old places I did with friends/guildmates back in the day. Needless to say it was a trip down memory lane, and while I was meandering down that lane I ran into some people doing what I was doing.

This is where it gets a little weird for me, as I am generally a solo player (now that my old guild fell apart due to internal reasons), I whispered one of the people who seemed to be having trouble. Along the way we ended up having to do all the escort and pre-events to all the mini puzzles and such. This person and I ended up partying up! I had so much fun doing it too and we ended up with a large group toward the end. We decided to not just stop at the components. We finished the whole thing, cheering each other on, helping each other figure it out.. for the first time in awhile I put down my Solo player mentality and opened up to find that despite my run ins with some bad seeds (pun intended) recently, this game and its community are filled with awesome people!

It made me stop focusing on my end goal for once, and instead I ended up just having a lot of fun. The journey to get there was just as rewarding as the end product! I’m glad I didn’t let the daunting task of its steps prevent me from accomplishing this.

tl;dr: I love this aspect of creating an item! It not only attached me to the item (and the little shop of horrors homage tugs on my nerdy side), but also it gained me a couple new friends. I generally enjoyed my time making it and now I am proud to have done it. Thank you ANet, whoever dreamed this up is really on to something!

ErazorZ.5209

How is this unfair?

Do stuff get stuff.

Do more stuff get better stuff.

would you want mawdrey to become as rare as bloodstone dust or would you wrather have something in a sense prestigeous with some value?

I will always pick the latter because i simply dont want all the rare cool loot be instantly obtainable for everyone i want them to write a story on how they got itt just like i will eventually do…

Also i see no rush to obtain mawdrey, simply because i unlocked everything for it and the piles arent going anywhere either.

If your mad about that rare a day, welp… there are better ways to get cash..

I seriously dont see the problem here at all..

And this is why you should change your policy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tolunart.2095

tolunart.2095

Constructive criticism is welcome and useful. Self-indulgent kittening, issuing orders and ultimatums, trolling, flooding the forums with reposts of the 1001st “give us mounts” thread and threatening to quit are not welcome or useful.

The policy is in place because, as recently seen, whenever a “red” pokes his head into the forums and tries to talk about real issues, the stones, arrows, rotten tomatoes and dung starts flying. This has the potential to drown out any real constructive discussion about the issues, wasting the devs’ time and just confusing the issue.

The devs didn’t set the policy and they don’t have the authority to change it. If you want them to go to their bosses and say “we really should loosen the restrictions on what we can tell the players,” you need to show those bosses that there are good reasons for doing so. You can start by showing them that you’ve learned how to behave like reasonable human beings at some point in the last year or so.

Well, that’s not going to happen any time soon. Maybe by the third anniversary.
