Clock Tower appreciation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

JackDaniels.1697

I just wanted to say, thank you Anet for creating the Clock Tower jumping puzzle.

If you guys remember, when it was first introduced back in 2012, there were a lot of mixed feelings over it. Some people praised it for being a real challenge, and others wanted Joshua Foreman’s head served on a plate for making it so kitten hard.

I will admit, I was one of those people who did not like how hard it was for the short amount of time we had it in game to complete it.

But after much trial and error, falling from sideway gears, walking off ledges, and jumping at the wrong window when you reached the top, 2 years later, I am become legend, lol.

I’ve come to appreciate this jp after hating it the first year. It’s also always fun to do once you get past the initial learning curve. And I realize now that because of the Clock Tower, I am so much better at every other jp in this game. Nothing can defeat me no longer.

So once again, thank you Anet and to you specifically Joshua Foreman for creating the most epic jp known to man.

Now I wonder how the Chinese feel about it. XD

Is the maize balm rat farm an exploit?

In a player driven economy, the demand of an item surpassing the supply generated by the playerbase will increase the value of it. While there are some items in these bags that are not based around cosmetics (the low drop rate of T6 mats), the price of these bags is directly relative to the cosmetic value that is being placed on them. While currently profitable, that profit is derived directly from other players and their willingness to play a higher price. In essence, this is a transfer of wealth not wealth generation.

As far as this specific spawn of ambients is concerned, it’s defiantly one of the faster ones to farm. As long as the playerbase is willing to pay for that item, and the demand remains higher than the supply, it will be profitable. This is not an exploit, it’s the playerbase saying “thank you for farming this, because we didn’t want to”.

Zommoros let me in on the fact that he expects to have an item he’s never had before to trade with tomorrow.

Edit 1: I’ll be checking for discovery and giving hints every once in awhile. First one is free The item has nothing to do with minis.

edit 2: This was a reference to the spoiler free thread that’s locked in this forum.

edit 3 (in story form): Lemark wasn’t much of a haggler. the merchant had taken almost every copper he owned, but it was worth it. He was positive this time, no more fakes, no more copies, forgeries or lies, this was it. He could feel it, sinister…ghostly, it felt weird to hold, but he didn’t care, his journey was one quarter complete.

3.5-4 Story continues:
(2 days later)
Lemark sprinted down the alleyway, an endeavor likely to leave one examining refuse closer than generally preferable, but this wasn’t his first time. He slowed for a moment to glance behind him, merchants still chasing with guards closely behind them. He was surprised they hadn’t given up, they must be very sensitive about their heritage here, the item itself was a bit too everyday to inspire this kind of rage. “Two more blocks”, he thought to himself, double-checking the sealed, cylindrical case he carried. His attempted thievery had failed, for today, but he wasn’t going to lose what he had to the muddy waters of the bay.

edit 5:
Lemark was in high spirits, it had been a productive week. After a series of failures his luck had turned. He stared at his own reflection in the item, such a trivial thing by itself, but with many, there was power. Zomorros knew it as well, Lemark had seen the desire in his eyes before, this was one of his favorites.

Out of story hint: I’ve only referenced 2 of the components so far.

edit 6:
Lemark sat back against the rocky wall, brackish water rained down from one geyser or another. “What am I even doing here?” he thought for the thousandth time. He was exhausted, bloody and sore. “One of these alien curs is going to kill me before I’m done with this”, he grumbled to himself as he stood up and stretched. He needed a drink, but the day hadn’t grown cold yet, he still had time. His resolve hardened, one more attempt, he stared at yet another dulled blade, one more chance for results…this wasn’t going to be fun.

edit 7:
Lemark rested his back against the rocky wall.
“Deja vu,” he thought wearily. Even the thought had grown tiresome.
Two months he’d been here. Two whole months of combat. He had almost died so often that the novelty was wearing off.
“What does it say about a person when your imminent death is an uninteresting topic for pondering,” he thought to himself.
He was tired of everything – this place, the clinking noises he made everywhere he went, the shelled beasts, and especially tired of the never-ending bloodshed.
He leaned his head back, closed his eyes and tried to imagine being back home.
Instead he saw the smug face of Zomorros.
He had almost forgotten his hate for the being. It was exactly what he needed – a reminder of why he was here.
A slight rumbling forced his attention back to reality as one of the creatures noticed his intrusion. He stared directly at the charging beast. If he had to, he would wipe this entire species off the face of the planet.

edit 8:
Lemark stared at his arms, at the half healed wounds that would soon serve as a permanent reminder of his last several months. Despite that he felt invigorated. All of that was behind him. He had gotten further than anyone else before – or so he supposed.
The final piece would be the hardest. He doubted he would have to fight some great monster, that wasn’t Zomorros’s style. He would have to do something harder; this journey wouldn’t end in a tremendous final battle. The ending would be more precise, more…scientific. He had only a single clue, contractually obligated from his last deal with the pseudo-deity.
He stood up from his table in the heart of Lion’s Arch and turned south.

edit 8.5:
A Sylvari scientist, not what Lemark expected. He should have learned by now that there was nothing ordinary here.
Despite the science, this was a nice respite, he could get used to this. Something here was harmonious and relaxing, was that part of the plan?
A shriek echo’d all around. Lemark was surprised, he still hadn’t learned. Nothing about this place was ordinary.

— A Charlie Daniels Band Devil Went Down to Georgia/Guild Wars 2 Halloween Parody.

Original work by Doxie2Denium, our newest member of the crew at Game_Blog0086.

Enjoy!

“The Mad King escaped to Tyria,
he was looking for a soul to steal.
He had a mind that in that time,
He would be making a deal.
When he came upon this Asura,
Jumping upon the rocks really hot,
The Mad King floated up on a dead stump,
And said “Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn’t know it, but besides my corny jokes,
I could get up those rocks faster then you could throw your folks.
Now you jump up those rocks fast guy, but give The Mad King his due,
I bet a trinket of gold against your soul to think I am better then you.”

The Asura said: “My name is Yadu, and it really makes no sense, but I’ll take that bet that you’ll soon regret, cause I’m the best that has ever jumped a fence.”

Oh Yadu get ready, and jump that puzzle hard,
Cause The Mad King’s loose in Tyria,
And he’s not dealing out cards.
If you win you get this shiny trinket made of gold,
But if you loose The Mad King gets your soul!

The Mad King floated high, and said: “I’ll start this show,”
and fire burst out his pumpkin head as he got ready to go.
And his pumpkin head floated up fast as he wanted to be there,
Then The Mad King rose up, planted a flag as if victory was declared.

When The Mad King was finished, Yadu said “Your pretty good old son,”
He pulled down his goggles, and yelled really loud “Let me show you how it’s done!”

His rocket boots launched him up atop the goal in one second flat,
When Yadu landed atop the rocks, a baby spider went splat.
His mother shot webbing at him, but Yadu broke free,
and landed back down, and started dancing around with glee.

The Mad King’s face slowly filled with disbelief,
As he lay the golden trinket on the ground at Yadu’s feet.
Yadu yelled, “Thorn come back if you ever want to try again, but
I told you once you son of a skirtt, I’m the best that has ever been.”

And he danced all the way back home, danced a jig with a few golems,
Boy, that golden trinket was really worth some dough,
Being the best around, how could he say no?”

Want the human female animations back

This is just pathetic. It’s taking them this long to fix it? It just shows where their priorities truly are, and that’s the gem store.

Their priorities, I would imagine, lie with fixing bugs with content that affects gameplay. A missing idle animation is insignificant compared with a bug that actually affects game progression.

And it’s also been stated a few times just since I started playing by staff, but they have different teams working on different aspects of the game (though you’ll likely find all gem store content was developed a while ago, and is simply set to a staggered release, requiring little upkeep)

Weird. Maybe put up a thread in the bug forum? I’m pretty sure, especially considering John’s statement, that no such “diminishing returns” is supposed to occur. It sounds like some kind of issue with getting kill credit.

Or words to that effect.

I’m not trying to discredit anybody here. However, as some have mentioned, they have seen players making posts about having quit the game, yet see those same players on their friends list logging in daily. If you’re posting about how long ago you quit the game, yet log in daily, that’s attention-seeking.

The point I’m getting at here is that while there are people who behave in that manner, there are at least as many, if not more, players who legitimately come and go for whatever reasons and should not be punished for that simple fact. I don’t assume somebody is using those tactics just because they say that they quit the game, and anybody (yes anybody) who is leaving constructive and respectful feedback has a right to leave said feedback, regardless of their last login date.

I should also add that the considerations for this feature were over two years ago when we were launching the forums and determining what type of restrictions to put in place.

+1 for communicating your thought process on this matter. You devs get a lot of flak for every post no matter the contents, but this one is nicely transparent and I want you to know that I and I’m sure many others appreciate that.

This is something that we had considered in the past, but opted against because it unfairly works against lapsed players who want to ask what’s changed since they last played and players like Pixelpumpkin who may, for personal reasons, be unable to log into the game, but still want to interact with the forums and stay up to date on the game.

It’s also worth pointing out that some people use claims of quitting the game as an attention-getting tactic, when in fact they are still quite active. Putting in this type of restriction would just push those people to claim they only log in to keep their forum privileges active.

the fact you considered it tells me your priorities arent really that great. People who bought the game and still feel the need to voice their concerns even in an annoying way, are probably giving feedback about what people who left the game are looking for. You just look at them as telling you things you dont want to hear. Anyhow doesnt

Well I’m okay with the fact they considered it because those worst case players keep a ball of toxicity building, flame and talk down to anyone they don’t agree with them, case and point posted above. Questioning a dev’s priorities on their own forum reeks of gamer privilege. Like literally screw your future gem purchases and your “supporting the game” if you can’t be constructive and not hurl abuse at the dev team and then hound them to produce more content on the same breath. There are literally tons of other things for retired players to do besides hassle people about a game they don’t play anymore. It’s getting pretty nasty on reddit and a couple gaming sites. Lots of abuse towards a certain staff member who may be in charge of gem store decisions along with the regular toxicity that’s been building up over time. Using the ban hammer is okay, but that requires vigilance and active moderation where having preventative measures in does stop some garbage before it starts. But as Mark mentioned, it’s a non-issue now.

Here’s an update for you:

It’s clear that quite a lot of you would like to have greater flexibility in using the Currency Exchange. Our intention when we designed the new interface was to streamline large volume purchases, which make up the majority of transactions.

In light of your feedback, we will update the Currency Exchange so that you can decide how you want to use it. We will keep the new streamlined system and also offer a new “Custom” button on the panel that you can use to exchange any increment of gems or gold.

We anticipate rolling this out soon. Stay tuned!

I think there is a too much reading into the storytelling going on. Synonyms for eldritch include sinister and ghostly (in fact, the definition pulled up by Google is precisely “sinister or ghostly”). Mystic Coins are an everyday item, literally! They are a reward for daily achievements. Finally, I can’t think of anyplace on Tyria that has geysers outside of Southsun. Possible materials that come from karka, reef riders, and gathering include blood vials, venom sacs, karka shells, and passion fruit and flowers (junk items do not appear in the Mystic Forge).

Granted, John could be yanking our chains on this giving misdirected details, but I’m with Occam on this. Simplest answers are the best answers.

And as an aside, my experience with Mystic Forge recipes are that the compatibility highlighting is not an exact science. I have had many instances where the highlighting does not highlight items for which a known recipe does exist. The below screenshot is an example. Eldritch Scroll and Mystic Coins go with the Ancient Focus Cores to make the Mystic Focus, but its not getting highlighted. So the fact that Eldritch Scrolls, Mystic Coins, and those crafting materials don’t all get highlighted does not necessarily mean that they don’t form a recipe. I don’t know if this is bug or intended function (maybe John can provide some enlightenment on that).

PvP Rank.

AP, PvP rank and WvW rank are a good idea, but legendaries and 80s aren’t, imo. Legendaries come down to gold grind, and the amount of 80s only tells you anything about the diversity of what they play. I only have two 80s, but I’ve played enough to have many, many more.
