Your own skill is almost irrelevant if you want to climb the divisions as long as you know the basics.

That shows the broken nature of the matchmaking and league system in general. Skill should be the most relevant factor.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s my understanding that any time an employee posts here, their response must first go through some kind of committee for approval. At least, that was the case some time ago after the SAB disaster.

If that’s still the case, Reddit might be a simple way to bypass this ‘committee’ and post without having your writing submitted for approval or disapproval.

If that’s still the case.

That makes so much sense. It’s good to have a safe space away from all that pressure and authoritarian lenses.

“However let me state that Reddit wasn’t full of the love and feels I expected after reading how the Devs prefer it there to here.”

Well it is the internet.

“The rude stuff some folks had to say just left me stunned. How sad it was it took 15 people a year to craft it, how the guild leader wasn’t even likely a female IRL”

Why would it matter if they are or not?

“just a bunch of rude nasty trolls. Like every other online forum can be.”

Meh, it comes with the territory.

I totally agree. On my meta build ele I heal and keep up the cleanses usually while switching to wind for pushing off node, CC and CC cleansing and earth for reflects, bleed, and some cripple and especially the earth overload triggering DH traps with minimal risk and not blowing dodges, some damage, and its stability helping to stall a point.

On my celestial long bow/staff druid I frequently switch roles from healing/support to attacker. It’s easier for my druid to fight dragonhunters than my ele. I notice my teammates running to die at mid in 2v3’s a lot, but I’m also paired against lots of team speak 5 mans so there’s not much you can do in those cases anyway.

You may think 10,000 drinks is a lot and it is, but the developers want to reward your efficiency at either playing the trading post, perseverance in selling materials consistently, and PvP persistence on the Wintersday reward track. You PvP and obtain gifts and karma, or you can do Silverwaste and buy with gold and karma, and do your daily gathering rounds for your daily 16-20g (depending on ascended mat prices).

And some right hand shields please! And don’t troll us like Dark Souls did by giving it a different moveset! This isn’t Dark Souls where such a mechanic can be open to abuse (or else giants with shields in Anor Londo would have their shields trivialized) so…please? ^_^ Or if you insist enabling duel wielding shields on a future elite spec with two Frisbee like moves, one for the right hand, and the other (skill 5) for throwing both shields. It would be a melee AoE that activates combo fields but does moderate damage on its own.

Doesn’t have anything to do with the gem store, I know…but what I’m getting at is if the mechanic is ever introduced to introduce a Frisbee shield skin.

“Bring back phalanx set please”

I like that set too.

We already have enough wings. It was weird when Sailor Moon grew bird wings and it’s weird that there are lots of bird people flying around. Capes or effects in the backpiece slot would be cool.

I’ll still put forth the school uniform idea. Just watch any anime especially K-On! for an idea. Also royal outfit with traditional king and princess looks. All that fabric would look so sweet. ^_^ Like the uploaded picture: elegant, modest without being frumpy, etc. Something like this but with gloves and a bigger crown would be great. While we’re add it can you add that hairstyle especially for humans and asuras? It’s so cute.

I’ve noticed lots of terrible clipping issues all around in game. People’s greatswords clipping through their behinds, wonky camera that can never be where I want it (need better zoom control), and it looks like shortcuts overall get taken to keep the game “playable” for those running old rigs.

I think a skateboarding minigame would be awesome complete with skater outfits that could be dyed to look like baggy denim shorts or cargo shorts. Oh well, maybe for the next event? All the major cities and some areas like Rata Novus would have skate areas and there’d be weekly skating championships in the Black Citadel for weekly achievement rewards.

Sounds like the opposite between reveal and condition damage AoE’s and cleaves though. It removes one condition, and whenever there’s a single condition cleanse it’s usually a lesser condition that gets washed. I’d also need to burn a dodge to get the cleanse.

Daredevil does sound like a dragon hunter counter with its interrupts, quick and many dodges (dash is instant with no animation uptime allowing for more evade allowance) escaping traps, and dodging out of CC. Dragon hunter for the most part wasn’t a problem against my druid and ele (overload earth to tank traps is good), less so the ele since it doesn’t have access to that nice celestial druid longbow damage or CA interrupts and cleanses, but it still has nice cleanses and heals but ele feels less suited for 1v1’s than druid. Dragon hunter seems better with teamwork (e.g., another class uses an AoE pull triggering the traps) but if well played can be a tough duel.

I que sometimes with a friend whos playing thief. Hes dangerous 1v1 and can eat revs and necros for breakfast. Also good at +1 to jump in, burst someone in 2sec and go somewhere else. Ppl have no idea how strong DD is. Underrated class atm and thats olny bc majority of thief community sux.

Almost no thieves play like this. Let me give you a rough outline how the average thief in spvp plays. Start the match by going to far to engage in pointless 1v1 and lose horribly to start match. Engage in as many meangingless 1v1s as possible during the match often on points the other team color that are guarded by people they can’t kill. Get involved in meaningless fights in the middle of the map off point. Get involved in big team fights and get zapped by random aoe. Cause everyone to rage with there incompetance. +1 one on side points and intelligent reading of the map to cap side points left open almost NEVER happens.

Thief community is to blame here tho. I know how average Joe plays. Most people that picked up thieves want to play it like rambo, they fail at it and screams thief sux. Good thief can be a gamechanger, i lost games and won just bc either me or my enemy had good thief that was keep decapping close/far. You basically have to let someone camp close in this situation forcing to 4v5.

What if there’s a Glint/Mallyx herald? If the reveal doesn’t get you the boon strip and strong burning and torment application will.

Should Divisions represent player MMR?

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

Yes, definitely. Higher divisions are meant to represent higher skill levels, so they should do exactly that.

Of course, as OP has already mentioned, this would require some major changes to league achievements, so that backpack farming should be possible even for those that won’t get out of amber (with higher divisions letting you finish faster).

If someone can’t get out of amber do they really deserve the backpack though?

I hope it’s a sign they’ll be adding mounted combat, like jousting. It’s a great idea for a PvP or WvW map at least anyway where you have teams of 20 and the groups decide beforehand who’ll be in an attacking team or who’ll stay behind to defend. Numbers would vary between attackers/defenders until a 4 defender/16 attacker meta or whatever is established. It’ll be like conquest but without NPC’s and the players themselves knock down doors not summoned bombers. Being mounted would offer a mobility advantage and there’d be a breakbar for dismounting. If you’re dismounted in that way you spend 3 seconds stunned. Victory would be declared after channeling at the opposing team’s base. So someone could say, “Ele, use staff and static field around the channeler!” so anyone who tries stopping him will be dazed, and necro to set up a field to block projectiles to counter those trying to interrupt the channel without risking a daze.

Coordinated dragonhunters aren’t that easy to kill. I remember killing one in 1v1, then that same DH stalemated me until someone +1’ed and got me. This was on a meta ele. My kind of off meta druid with staff and longbow handles dragonhunters very well usually, but some of the ones that pop superspeed at the proper moment can be hell you can never recover from. On revenant they can be tough but Mallyx is a godsend (or is she a demonsend? ^_^ ) for the boonstripping and condition damage sync with the elite and axe/mace since guardian typically has a low health pool and condition damage totally invalidates armor. Some power pressure is still advisable however so don’t shy away from Shiro and sword/shield if you feel it’ll help, especially if they’re below health. They have an annoying habit of healing to full however. Revenant is all about energy management and skill/avatar sync.

Should Divisions represent player MMR?

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

I would like to offer potential solutions to the above mentioned problems:

MMR manipulation at each tier giving incentive for players to give up early in matches or purposely loss matches

Tie league to MMR.

Solo queue mixed with pre-made queue.

Solo would be solo whereas to potentially solve queue time problems mix duos and triples with full premades.

Matchmaking that does not take into consideration number of Elite Spec and meta builds when balancing

Ban people who don’t have HoT from ranked and only have them able to do 10 unranked games per day.

People who have years of experience playing on alt accounts to get a free ride to Ruby
Extensive use of teleport and other hacks

Such hacks need better monitoring. Since Guild Wars 2 is a very light game (I can get 40-60 fps with just a GTX 670 at 4k resolution) such software running to check for hacks shouldn’t add too much of a burden.

As for alt account experience if you really have that level of expertise don’t you belong in ruby to begin with? What if their “alt” account is actually their main and need a PvP tag on that account so no one mistakes him for a pure PvE’r? Badges say, or should say, “I PvP and this is where my skill level is at.” Showing a tag is much better than being on an alt with no tag (therefore no way to separate yourself from pure PvE’rs who’ll simply say if you’re such a PvP expert where’s your tag?"

Skilled in higher divisions taking gold to pair up with lower division players

I honestly foresaw this happening but not the tanking. All this would achieve is division inflation and should be regulated as such. Then in the higher division they’ll get experience playing better players and will eventually develop the skill to belong there. Still, it’s a morally gray area leaning towards the dark side.

Should Divisions represent player MMR?

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

Divisions should certainly represent MMR since high MMR means you’re good. If you have ruby for example and only made it there by competing against other 50th percentile players then are you really a ruby? Making league correlate with MMR would give give the badges more prestige.

Ruby is like third tier from the top, wouldn’t that correspond to 50-75th percentile of the PvP population anyway? That’s my way of looking at it.

Divisions shouldn’t be based on straight, simple math because a 50% player and 75% player can have a huge gap in skill. For perspective if you are rated 1800 Elo (class A) in chess (FIDE) you’re in the top 90% whereas an international master is above 99.9%.

I propose a correlation like so:

Amber: 0-50%
Emerald: 51-75%
Sapphire: 76-90%
Ruby: 91-95%
Diamond:96-top 1,000
Legendary: Top 500 only.

spoiling star wars in map chat

Agemnon.4608

Edit- the forums are wonky and I deleted my previous post.

I understand that “spam” is an issue, as is using the lfg tool for unintended purposes, but I honestly don’t see an issue with discussing things in chat that don’t involve breaking the rules or any form of ingame NDA…

When are players allowed to discuss Star Wars? After the entire playerbase has verified they have seen it?

Are players allowed to discuss real life stock market stuff if they choose?

I’m not being sarcastic, I’m just wondering where these fine lines are? I would hate for map chat to turn into one person mentioning Star Wars then players jumping on them saying… “The devs said you can’t talk about Star Wars 7 so I’m reporting you”, then customer service taking the time to review every Star Wars related report needlessly…

One again, “spam” I get because it’s “spam”, but to discuss something in chat that doesn’t break the current rules or any ingame NDA is not wrong by any means…

I think definitions should err on the side of tightening rather than broadening because broadening things would encompass more people. Let’s say that to be a whatever-ist you need to meet certain criteria such as having certain beliefs. Then the definition expands, and the problem with this is you too would become a whatever-ist due to an arbitrary shift in goalposts.

This logic applies to trolling. Sure there are people who deliberately “spoil” in order to troll but most are simply careless, likely because it’s inconceivable to some people that they’d feel strongly about it. He may simply want to talk about the new Star Wars and invite people to a conversation, but is suddenly deemed a “troll” despite not insulting anyone’s race, religion, fandom, swearing at others, intending to cause grief, or personally calling others out as “noobs” or whatever and I don’t agree with this.

  • Collectively amount to “a formidable intellect”
  • Opportunistic even to their own detriment (eg. Exploiting bugs)
  • Only “farm” with minimal effort
  • Figure out ambiguous or opaque systems despite the designers intentions
  • Fragmented social structure leading to no central governance
  • Those who pass the most information the fastest are “leaders” e.g. Dulfy

Maybe more I missed?

This line of reasoning also leads me to conclude that the Asurans are the ArenaNet devs.

Wait hold up. How do you know so much about the skritt and what’s the source? How do we know their leadership is based off passing the most information the fastest?

" Figure out ambiguous or opaque systems despite the designers intentions"

The bigger question is how do you know the designers’ intentions in the first place? How does this relate to skritt?

posts like these makes me sick…
some people are:
a) unable to complete JP due to physical disabilities
b) unable to complete JP because their hand coordination is just not on par
c) truly truly truly hate JP

Calling it laziness is undeserved and pathetic, their own capabilities or willingness doesn’t impact your own.

Letter c applies to me and I was able to get the achieve. I’m left handed and still managed to get it even though my left hand was only resting on home row thumbing the space bar for jumps while my right hand was holding down mouse buttons and making fine wrist movements for turning.

With that said there are valid reasons why people can’t finish. Like you said physical disabilities, but also hardware. What if someone’s running an AMD rig and therefore can’t get the FPS needed to accurately gauge jumps? The difference between 20 and 30 is big, 30 and 60 not so much but it’s that extra fine detail you take in from all those frames that really help with snap judgments (such as when to press spacebar).

I added C for fact, I hate JP and I actually enjoyed this one (mostly because failing didn’t mean ruining 2 hours of work and dying in a dark pit full of monsters)
Does being left-handed truly impact people’s gameplay? I’m left-handed and never had a problem with any games (closer to ambidextrous than true left-handed, but still…)
I forgot hardware, it is valid, may had a d) somewhere in there too :o

It doesn’t usually come into play but if someone is right handed they’ll have a dexterity advantage over a lefty. Righties are more common (90% of people are righties) so mice tend to assume that. With that said turning the mouse for some subtle camera movement wasn’t a problem for me, so it certainly shouldn’t be a problem for most people. Camera settings (turn camera speed to max and others) are also critical.

Stronghold = more fair?

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

No, relies on AI and lords tend to be powerful as all heck. This is because the game assumes at least two players are attacking it.

I think the basic idea for stronghold is great, but instead of defeating NPC’s we storm the game, charge to claim a node like a temple buff, and hold the node. Point progression would be like other maps but instead of three maps you have two, this encourages offensive and defensive play since both sides want both nodes. A potential strategy when ahead could be turtling at your own node, but that might be a potential problem with two node setups.

SW:tOR had some excellent maps (not just Huttball) where you had to attack and defend certain points in order to reach a datacore. There were bridges you could fall off and everything. Voidstar and Huttball were some of my best times in gaming.

If you think about it PvP is the fairest game mode (especially Khylo) because while some matchups seem unfair those players that are better skilled and coordinated have access to the very same classes, builds and advantages you do. Skill can overcome unfair advantages (case and point I soloed Ascalon Catacombs on a daredevil where high HP super durability bosses that hit like a truck needed to be beat)

Agemnon.4608

This is why I didn’t PvP in the last bunch of hours. Sometimes taking strategic breaks is a great idea. People that queue at the same time are deemed by the algorithm as playing with one another, and if you get a premade and queue soon enough afterward you could very well end up playing them again. You could be familiar, fresh in their memory, so either take a break or go unranked so you still get some reward track progress without risking your pips. If those people keep playing their MMR would be changed somewhat by playing, so the matchmaking algorithm will pair you up against new people.

Of course it’s better to just join a team even if you need LFG. For example:

Doesn’t feel like it even on emerald. I was unlucky enough to get bumped from four pips in T5 emerald three times now. My last team had a warrior and the opposing team had teamspeak (they were in the previous two games)

After emerald I just won’t care anymore and will just queue without regard to planning pip wins such as, “According to trends I will lose the next match if I soloq, and soloq has the risk of warriors, thieves, and MMR tankers with it anyway.” and, “I’m getting too familiar for this time bracket for now. They now have the sense to focus my ele/druid/whatever so I’ll log on later.”

Update: tried soloQing, lost a pip against a premade then another vs. the same one. They obviously had teamspeak and always somehow managed to be in the right place at the right time (from their point of view) even being able to get away with 3 capping at times. Last game we had a warrior and I was holding 3 on a point but someone jumped to 2v3 when the idea was to stall them at that one point so they can grab the other points.

I’m waiting awhile before queuing again since they might not be on later. Oh well, now I’m 3 pips away from Sapphire.

Maybe my ele’s class MMR is too high now and I need to queue with a fresh class (engineer) to carry my way to sapphire? So I’d be having matches with weaker players stuck around the same league tier (when you have poor rubies and good emeralds something’s wrong with the MMR to league relationship.)

Agreed, bad idea. It’s too random and takes away skill. A better idea is to balance the classes. Since elite specs and revenant are new they’re gathering metrics to properly balance them. In other games new classes tend to be overtuned until they’re reined in after looking at the data. When devs see that death knights commonly 1v3 successfully for example they know they need some serious tuning.

I’ve lost quite a bit, then won a bit more. I’m now up to four pips on T5 emerald and knowing my match trends I will lose the next battle. I was thinking of doing a LFG but that hardly ever works out well (in PvE at least). A LFG with “Must be meta” or, “Must have HoT” might make me look bad but I want to keep out the FtP and people who don’t know how to rotate. Ele has a low skill floor but high skill ceiling (so good players are excellent on it while noobs could still be useful due to the nature of the class) so it seems safe. Maybe I should ask for two other tempests, chrono, and herald? Just a thought but if the team is good enough I’d risk facing another good team.

Thoughts?

[PSA] get blocked you if you're not meta

While I get annoyed over people queuing as underpowered classes (especially if they switch over to one when one is already in the team) I would never block over it. I reserve my blocks for goldsellers.

"
it’s just a fact that certain classes or builds don’t work in the current meta and if I see a Necro, Thief or War on my team and the other team runs meta, I already say goodbye to a pip in my mind."

What’s wrong with necro? I’ve won a game with three necros on my team (then again I had wins with two warriors so make of that what you will)

Noob account Ruby, Main stuck in Emerald?

The faster way to get out of Emerald is to not get into a losing streak when you are 1-2 pips away from next tier or division.

Time your losing streaks when you’re at the bottom of a tier w/ no pips to lose.

It’s junk, this league. There are people in Ruby who honestly belong in Emerald, maybe even Amber.

Implying we’ll have a choice otherwise if we SoloQ or won’t be subject to horrible matchups. I had a team with two thieves earlier the matchmaking should really take class into account.

I hate having 2 thieves. I started a thread about that a long time ago. If you sense you’re in a losing streak, play in unranked for a bit. That’s what I do based on how bad the teammates are or if we are against a premade our solo team has little chance of beating.

Uggh, me too. I even had teams with two warriors before, not today but did. It’s like the game’s matchmaking algoritm’s way of saying it hates me.

Why have teamQ to begin with?

So teams can face off against other teams, both sides will have teamspeak and their agreed upon builds, classes, and such against each other so no steamrolling randoms who have to rely more on skill and tactical knowledge. Those who can communicate swiftly have an advantage over those who can’t, a group that starts out with known strategies has an advantage over a random selection of people some of whom may play a suboptimal build and class.

I agree, I had an embarrassing losing streak today but did manage to get a couple of two pip wins. Sounds “lucky” until you realize I was unlucky enough afterward to get knocked back down to 1 pip in T5 emerald :(
