You do realise that upgrading the engine to DX11 would leave out all of the people already playing on DX9 and DX10 only machines right?. As there is a huge player base on DX 9 and 10 only machines. (WinXP and Vista, plus some Win7s)

And if you think maintaining two versions where one runs on DX11 and the other on DX10, (or 3 versions if DX9 only WinXP people should play) is easy, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Say goodbye to future expansions with the size of their team…

i dont understand why you cant buy a better PC unless your making minimum wage?

Because as a business its really stupid to tell perhaps a million of your users “screw you you have to all buy a new graphics cards and upgrade your OS in order to continue to play the game so that a small minority with the latest cards can be happy”

DirectX11 would be a reasonable compromise though. You could use it on Windows 7 systems (old OS) while enabling a 64-bit client to minimize Tequatl crashes. Playing on the lowest possible settings (and still having a risk of crashing) just isn’t fun.

If someone’s system is too lousy to play a game made in the 10s then they should just buy old games off Steam. You can even buy very old school 16-bit games off Steam in bundles.

DX11 is for Windows 8 and above, Direct3D is a version that works on Windows 7 but its not the same.

It would not be a reasonable compromise. Imagine the kittenstorm when Vista and Windows 7 users come to the forum complaining how they bought the game for the published requirements and now suddenly cant play it so that those 10 guys complaining can notice a difference.

None of you seem to understand a thing about how DirectX works nor how to run a business.

DirectX9 is dinosaur stuff though. I know enough to know that superior products sell better. We’re in the 4k era, you gotta change with the times man.

  • It’s like everyone that pvp’s now gets their build from metabattle and can’t come up with something creative and think for themselves. I’d love to see forced team composition so you don’t have 5 thieves in a match for example.*

I wouldn’t mind seeing five thieves on a team…so long as it’s the other team. Five eles on my own team though I certainly wouldn’t mind.

I’ve sent recorded video and screenshots of players exploiting/hacking in WvW to that email in the past and nothing had ever happened to them and they continued to exploit. Either email’s sent to that specific address forward straight to trash or you guys don’t care about exploiting.

Skipping bosses in dungeons is one thing and is even sometimes justified (opportunity to do so plus that particular one drops no loot anyway by going friendly) whereas in WvW it has no excuse whatsoever because it effects other players. Some people use speed hacks because they just care about winning and don’t want putting in the work for such skill.

“As for exploits in general, how can you ask players to take this seriously when ANET themselves muddy that idea in the current core game in allowing the endless purposeful failing of events and event chains in order to exploit the reset timers for personal gain.”

If everything weren’t so expensive (100 gold for the icy runestones required to make a legendary and more than that for t3 cultural armor for example) and the reset timers were much faster and reprogramming it so that winning triggers the current losing benefits then people could have the same benefit without exploiting per se.

People have various expenses. And it’s not only a case of not wanting to, it’s also a case of a) buying a new computer for a single game is not going to be a high priority expense for a lot of people b) lots of people (very rightfully so) won’t buy a new computer for a single game, thus causing Arenenet to lose players.

The idea is to buy parts over time. For example I’m saving up for a Pascal GPU, but am expecting it around June of 2016 so I have plenty of time to buy an external 2TB HDD (I have Windows 10 which is known for spying so old copyrighted Youtube stuff could get flagged somehow) from an internal 1TB HDD and upgrade to a gold rated 1000w PSU from Seasonic or similar from 750w just in case I get the GTX 1070 for SLI or moving over to AMD if Arctic Islands smashes Nvidia this time around as far as price to performance goes. 2015 seems to be an AMD year but I think 2016 will see Nvidia drastically leapfrog. The mid-range AMD cards released this year weren’t just 290’s with extra RAM added but more like refreshes (e.g., like going from a 4770k to a 4790k), but that’s still disappointing compared to a die shrink though.

Because it would be expensive, and they haven’t determined that the trade-off in development resources would be better spent there than on developing new content.

I don’t know what kind of answer you’re expecting.

Much of the competition will be releasing in DirectX 11 and 12, and for around the same price as the HoT expansion too. Already WoW has a 64-bit client.

Guild Wars 2 with the best community?

What?

It is the best community.

But it can be so mean to the developers.

Balancing makes their e-sport aspirations a total joke. If the game is so “well balanced” then how do you explain this meta team setup?

For raiding no because it involves playing a thief. Thief lacks so much raid utility that druid, engineer, and revenant could bring so don’t handicap your team.

The skills aren’t that great, signet of shadows gives you a passive speed boost, spike trap applies a long ticking poison and cripple (but it’s situational) and haste is good for breaking crowd control. Shadow refuge and signet of shadows aren’t optional, that leaves either haste or a trap (trip wire or spike trap) for your other skill.

For an elite you want either a racial (I go with Avatar of Melandru because it fills in some major gaps because it has an excellent AoE heal, crowd control, and the form has stability, all of which thief lacks) or sometimes the dagger one. The dagger one can get interrupted so that’s no good mostly while basilisks venom can be okay but it’s situational (some classes have weapon abilities that stun like warrior hammer) and underwhelming. Not to mention that it doesn’t work on champions.

“what do thieves need to be more balanced in the eyes of all the nay-sayers and dont say more dps cause a race for whoever has the highest dps stick is gunna break the game.”

Simply better defense. Despite being ranged and having pets rangers have better base HP than thieves and sometimes even damage too, and not only is it not positional, it has much better range too.

Thief lacks the AoE ranged damage fields that ranger, elementalist, mesmer, guardian, and warrior (via longbow like ranger) have combined with positional requirements for damage. The lack of multi-target viability is itself a handicap that needs something to balance it out, especially combined with too little base HP where conditions trivially melt through.

Considering the introduction of reveal thief needs some massive buffs to compensate for it.

I think it is safe to say just don’t play a thief in any game mode and expect to be on par with other classes. Somehow this class went from useful and dangerous to underwhelming and brittle over the course of a few big patches.

It’s not safe to say, one shouldn’t make general statements like “a class sucks” without overwhelming proof, thieves are fine if not great, i spvp all the time and solo dungeons. Whining like this sounds like a detrimental L2P issue. problem with meta is people need to be open to new ideas rather than pigeon holding themselves cause yea state of the game changes everyone has to deal with that.

Wow taking out low HP targets (ranger could do it too from better range) and decapping (but of course not being sturdy enough to actually hold a point) and doing everything but actually fighting (unless it’s joining in some other fight but the onus of skill is on the outnumbered side it’s obviously easier to beat someone up if you have a buddy helping you) Face it, thief is underwhelming and if it were great you wouldn’t be seeing all of these threads complaining about how unviable thief is or at “best” debating if it’s viable. No one debates over an elementalist’s viability. Some teams even take four elementalists. If classes were so balanced then why would teams like this be meta?

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Team_-_4_Ele_Balanced

It’s sad that European rules require at least three professions, as if to officially acknowledge that class stacking of this type is overpowered. The four ele meta should have been a serious wakeup call to Anet’s balancing team, but instead they’re focused on introducing some garbage camera mode where you can’t even mouse turn.

For example being a warrior with access to mesmer abilities or warrior with thief skills (mobility primarily) like theft since thief is mobile but (way too) squishy while warrior lacks mobility so this would be a great way to patch up weaknesses.

I only plan to use this function if it will work with my microsoft xbox 360 controller. Can someone from anet confirm if there will be compatibility? Seems kinda pointless to implement this feature if not.

You dont want to go up against in pvp players with gaming mouse with actual skill. Well, i wouldnt. To be honest i dont think the controller could handle the ammount of abilities and other stuff you can do anyways.

Thumbsticks tend to be garbage compared to mice but it seems like a simple enough fix: add a thumb sensor in place of the thumbpad. I hate how I’m tapping so lightly it doesn’t move yet an ounce more effort makes it go too fast for proper aiming.

Otherwise you can use controllers for GW2. Consider the following:

Arrow up = class skill 1
Upper-right= class skill 2
Right = class skill 3.
Lower-right = class skill 4
Down = Class skill 5
Lower-Left = Utility skill 1
Left=Utility skill 2
Upper-left=Utility skill 4
RB=Elite skill
LT=Heal
X=Autoattack
A=Weapon skill 2
B=Weapon skill 3
Y=Weapon skill 4
RT=Weapon skill 5

With plenty of room to spare. That’s not even considering pressing a joystick as a button (maybe “back” or joystick button pressed could act as interact/grab loot?)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Agemnon.4608

I’m noticing that Anet is running into the same problem, all MMO devs do. With every new expansion, comes the inevitable obsoletion of former content.

Now, the hero challenges of yore, will be replaced with the new content. Why scour Tyria, for 1pt each, when you can just power level, and go straight to Maguuma Jungle?

All this seems like a bad idea, and just an excuse to make veterans work more for what they’ve already done.

How is that a “problem” exactly? I had fun in WoW leveling in some undead zones in Cataclysm, but you evolve past the enemies in those areas and canonically solve the problems in the region. Your power and some 500 HP average Joe have a huge gap. For perspective Batman as a peak human would very likely have stats similar to a level 30 warrior perhaps even with optimal gear for that stage. Weapons are good for a certain stage then you outgrow them as they aren’t adequate enough to face new threats. How many rockets does Claw of Jormag take exactly? Lots more than the Punisher could carry.

However, I crash a lot on Tequatl and the engine is much older than three years old. It runs off DirectX9 which was obsolete back in 2008 at least and a 32-bit API.

Greed knows no bounds.

There are 2 scenario’s which allowed you to cap mf to 300%

  • You are filthy rich and bought your way to 300% mf through ToT bags or whatever means
  • You salvage items bought from the TP to resale the broken down materials for a profit

There is zero reason to give people gold (because that is what this sink is about, turning something you have no use for into something profitable) for essence of luck, non.

But here is an idea:

  • Turn in a stack of exotic essence of luck for a stack of bloodstone dust/dragonite ore/empyreal fragments

The problem there is those mats drop so much they’re actually a liability due to how much space they take up. Maybe turn them into linen or silk instead?

in Warrior

Agemnon.4608

@Online
You’re wrong about GreatBow. First, the gs alone has enough power to kill a thief with just a whirlind and arcing slice if you’re geared in zerk. The bow gives you aoe when stealth in advance of a burst, but it’s main purpose is to out-trade damage when they’re using their shortbow.

As for GreatAxe, it’s not a matter of luck. You can play it well enough to kill thieves with a pretty high chance of success. It’s not like we’re talking about fighting an ele here.

The above builds are stance based, of course.

Shortbow isn’t used for damage outside of the bouncing arrow in PvE for tagging. It’s primarily a support tool for poison stacking (shortbow 4 is terrible solo but great with other thieves and rangers who rapid fire into it, great against anything that can heal since poison reduces healing effectiveness), crippling while dodging (shortbow 3), and shortbow 5 to get out of trouble or reach a point faster (at great initiative cost of course.)

I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. The only way to have perfect balance is to have every player use the exact same character class, with the exact same gear, abilities and statistics.

Any time there is a choice to be had in PvP, there will be a clearly superior choice.

Obviously arena net are doing just this. Once D/D ele mobility eclipses that of a thief they’ll finally achieve it

Umm…ride the lightning, zephyr’s speed, and the lightning teleport at least help d/d ele rival thieves’ mobility. The air attunement even has a nice interrupt. Tempest also gets a skill in air attunement where you could pull enemies back in, useful for when a ranger does point blank or guardian uses its push back in PvE.

Agemnon.4608

Thief feels like an afterthought. Anet obviously doesn’t care about class balance otherwise certain top teams wouldn’t be able to have four elementalists. For testing balance Anet could make bots with very sophisticated AI (so good that it should only be in top tier PvE content that only 2% of players would be able to complete and too dynamic for a strategy guide to be useful…or maybe AI isn’t quite there yet technologically?) play against each other, like team A vs team B playing 100 matches, tracking data, and balancing things that way and using the data in metrics. Balancing would both revolve around 5v5 and 1v1. If a class vastly underperforms 1v1 things could change. If they win too much after the rebalance then they could change it slightly.

If not bots then paying top players to do internal testing would help, but a problem there would be a noob on thief could be a pro on elementalist so it wouldn’t be a perfect solution. The idea would be trying countless permutations of 5v5 and 1v1.

Thieves' SB 5, decapping and game's health

in PvP

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

I would be willing to have SB5 nerfed if only because it would result in the Thief being so bloody undertuned and unwanted that everything else would get buffed and maybe the class would get some diversity and be more useful overall.

Yep, if thieves want to be able to fairly 1v1 any meta build at the moment they need to give something up. Sadly sense, reason and logic is something I’ve come to never expect from anyone uttering the words main and thief.

The sad thing is most people don’t realise that if you want buffs to your class then generally it has to have fallen out of the meta, something thief hasn’t managed after at least 2 years.

YEAH!!! Ignore the fact that we have asked for in combat sustain ranged option to replace SB, there was more to us wanting rifle then a 1200 range weapon instead of another melee weapon they’ve nerfed p/d and refuse to add to add sustain to p/p. Many said they would give up/swap SB mobility for combat efficiency but where is the option huh? You are only seeing what you want to see.

ANet actually buffed power damage on pistol last patch, sure not got 1200 range but unload does hit like a truck now and PP is better ranged damage.

Besides for someone putting in bold “You are only seeing what you want to see” are you not doing the exact same with my post? At no point have I mentioned SB or pistols or ranged options. I said if you want a fair 1v1 thief needs to give up something up. You can’t have top tier mobility, disengage, chase and to be able to stand a 50/50 chance on point.

But thief to begin with lacks in a department: AoE fields. Warriors and rangers have big damage arrow fields and elementalist has a ton of them. Shortbow 2 is too slow to count for anything. Thieves’ lack of a viable AoE field should be considered what’s given up, and it’s already implemented! What’s needed is balancing thief damage upward.

In the current state of the class, it is definitely not a good or easy to pick class.
But, it is not as bad as everyone says, the problem is the vast majority of thieves suck, but you can win fights, survive more than 2 seconds and be useful to your team with some practice, just try harder.
You’ll be much more useful on a pre-made team with strategy tho,
playing with random players can be a pain when you are a Thief.

The vast majority of players in general suck, the problem is with the class itself. At least with warrior you can still actually engage in fights 1v1.

oh wow, you beat a bad premade, congrats. you know what? that happens from time to time. now play against one that resembles the average skill of your pug. you will have no chance. rather than gambling that the premade is composed of hotjoin trash it’s more time efficient for the whole team to afk and get a proper match. for one bad premade you’ll get 5 or 6 or more that are approximately at your level or even better and then all your motivational speeches will be in vain.
i myself am average at best and i only play like once a week because of time issues (meaning i srsly lack training) and when i play premade with my mates (which are probably just a tad better than me since they mostly play pvp) the opponents have to exceed us skill wise by a decent margin because we’ll steamroll even pugs that are technically better than us.
don’t fool yourself, having luck in being matches with a bad team doesn’t mean you’ll win against premades on average. just save your time and watch some youtube until the match is over.

Pls bring your salt mine elsewhere.

You, you’re nothing but negative energy. Go away.

No way man, PvP would feel like something’s missing without salt. It’s okay not to win, if you don’t then the other team did their job right…or more right than your own team. Sometimes it’s even out of your control like a teammate lagging or disconnecting or rudely going AFK. If it’s because he’s AFK then that’s justified salt and if you all lose without griefing on your teammates’ end at least you tried and actually faced other players and not some AI HP sink. Yeah buddy, you’re so cool with that dungeon master title with your ascended ‘zerker team steamrolling content designed assuming you’re in rares or exotics. So be grateful that you’re cooler than those “dungeonmasters”.

+1 on the recipe reintroduction.

I heard some rumor about special item vendors that might be introduced. Can anyone confirm?

It’s part of the Pact Commander mastery line: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Supply_Line_Management

I hope stalwart gear will be available through there if not through PvP tracks.

I have an idea for a rune: Calvin’s rune based off DPS/healer builds. Ideal for those with some zealot’s gear or combinations like clerics and berserker.

1. Power +25
2. Healing power +35
3. Power +50
4. Healing power + 65
5. Power +100
6.Grant four seconds of stability, 30s cooldown.

Even with the current salvage rates ascended armor crafting is too expensive especially since fabric is required for everything.

Season passes for unlocking certain dungeons and PvP tracks. Because they’d be the best farming zones (and fun too) and contain exclusive rewards Anet would basically have a license to print money as long as the passes are reasonably priced (maybe 1,000 gems for a month access?) You would have spark monsters for example that would have 1/4th less HP and armor than level 80 sparks in the actual game and drop rates for rare materials drastically improved and all humanoids are guaranteed to drop random rags for salvaging (despite being level 80 they’d drop everything from jute to gossamer rags all with the same drop rate). If enough people are there then they all become vets and elites with rising drop rate. There would also be lower leveled rooms with the passes for leveling.

Your flaws were using assumptions as they were the norm…..in your case specifically that all rich players will forge b/c they are smart. That ignores the consideration of the time and effort it takes (which you very well know).

It simply shows how players can have a disproportionate impact on other players via wealth gained from only a few specific playstyles. In other words, there are “OP” playstyles when it comes to the economy. Anywhere else in the game something being “OP” is not tolerated for long as it’ll be balanced for the overall benefit of the game in general.

Yep. There’s a reason why bots are overwhelmingly a certain class. Anyone remember the trains of ranger bots back in the day?

Yeah, first thing I noticed was that my build didn’t even exist anymore. I got a message that stated they match the build as close as they could. The game took almost 90 mins to launch because I basically had to reload the game due to all the updates. Lion’s Arch doesn’t even look like the same place.

I hopped around a bit and refreshed myself on the controls. Had to retrain all my skills but luckily it looks like they credited skill points back to my account so it was more a matter of just toggling through them and hitting the train button 150 times. Went to the banker and WOW has that changed. Last time I played there were no outfits or armor storage. I feel like I have to almost start over to relearn the game. Funny, I feel like once upon a time I dominated this game and now I’m back to being a noob.

The problem with new Lion’s Arch is it’s too neutral and sanitized as opposed to the gritty piraty look of old Lion’s Arch. That place had character.

Even when I set the graphics to mininum. Even on max settings I can get 30-60 FPS. I have seen at least two year old topics having the same issue. Would overclocking my RAM help since it’s an infamously known memory issue that’s due to the limitations of a 32-bit client.
