Reworking of waypoint costs

in Suggestions

Posted by: Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

The issue for me isn’t that waypoints have a cost – I don’t mind it as a gold sink – it’s that the costs tick upward so much at higher levels.

It’s like if you got on the bus one day and the driver said “That’ll be four dollars,” and then you take the same route a few weeks later to meet up with your friend, and this time the driver says “That’ll be four hundred dollars.” It changes a reasonable cost for an excursion into an increasingly prohibitive expense.

I don’t think waypoints need to be free, but I think they need to be less punishing for high-level characters, especially since those characters are also incurring high repair bills when we die.

I wouldn’t mind something like a “pass” to use the gates, but I think the solution could be a lot simpler than that if they just adjusted the costs to be more accurately scaled to the potential income a high level player would actually be able to make in a low level zone, rather than the maximum potential earnings we could be getting elsewhere.

Killing the Mouth of Zhaitan (spoiler)

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Yeah, I had no trouble solo-ing most of my personal story – Estate of Decay was by far the hardest mission I ran into. Everything between that and Zhaitan was easy by comparison.

If the other option is easy (I haven’t tried it yet,) it’s definitely a balance issue. I don’t think it’s a player issue when so many people who don’t normally struggle have struggled with this particular one.

We don't like Trahearne *Spoiler Warning* [merged]

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I think Trahearne would have worked fine if he wasn’t always around. I wouldn’t have minded having him as my boss if it seemed like he actually trusted me to do my job without him (quite literally) looking over my shoulder most of the time.

A glaring example of this is at the start of the Battle for Fort Trinity mission. Trahearne sends the PC to check on a logging camp, which is exactly the kind of thing a leader ought to be delegating. Except… he then follows you there, defeating the whole purpose of your character’s role in the Pact and making it seem like he has very little to do besides tag along while you work.

I don’t think that the issue is Trahearne himself so much as how artificial it felt to have the spotlight constantly directed back toward him at every possible opportunity. If he’d just given the marching orders and let the PC get on with it (like the Order leaders did,) I don’t think people would have half so many problems with his role.

Having him as leader and the most important footsoldier in so many missions kind of leaves the PC without much of a story role at all.

Deer are overpowered

Deer are totally overpowered.

During probably my first week or so playing the game, I’d just taken out a whole camp full of centaurs singlehandedly, and had rescued and revived a Seraph who assured me of his eternal gratitude.

Then I was immediately stomped to death by some deer I had accidentally aggroed with an AoE. There was no contest between us, it was just a Ranger smashing fest.

Those deer definitely taught me some humility.

Thank you!

I really wanted to say thank you for this, too.

I participated in quite a bit of the weekend event, but because of repeated disconnects my progress never counted toward completion, and the only tangible thing I got at the time was a repair bill that exceeded what I earned.

I felt pretty bummed about that – not because I’d been expecting any kind of spectacular reward, but because it seemed like as far as the game was concerned it didn’t even matter that I’d been there. It was more the principle of the thing than that I wanted any specific piece of loot.

It made me really happy to find the chest in my mail tonight. It was nice to get a couple of rares and exotics, but what really made my night was the box and the karka shell, because it was being acknowledged that I was part of this event. It made me feel that my participation mattered to the world of Tyria after all.

So thanks, dev team, for taking the time to do this. I look forward to participating in future events!

I agree that it would be nice to see the Orders have more ongoing story role. My time with the Vigil was my favourite part of the personal story, and I was disappointed when it faded into the background.

I’d really like to have the Orders play more of a role in future expansions. They wouldn’t need to be at odds with each other again – just helping the Pact in different ways.

This would also increase replayability with alts if you had them in different Orders.

My character creation choices

I’m talking about my high-level characters as I forgot what choices I have picked for them.
I finished their personal stories long time ago and I don’t want to repeat their choices in my other characters.
Is there any way to see my high-level story log again ?

It doesn’t matter what level you are. You can always see your story log by opening the Hero panel (pressing H) and pressing the third icon down in the shape of a star.

Click on the first step (“I’m [whatever you named your character]”) and it will tell you all the character creation choices you made.

To see what missions you chose later, you can just look through your other story steps.

A foolproof way to make us happy.

As for Arah story. You go slay an Elder Dragon. Recall ypu last encounters with dragons… There was one on Claw Island where you and an ENTIRE ARMY of NPCs fougth. Not sure if you did the Champs that spawn all 3 hours. But there is always an ENTIRE ARMY of players there. The Dragons are like the ultimate enemy. Beeing able to slay Zhaitan solo would just not fit. Especially not in a world that’s filled to the brimm with heroes.

Those aren’t the only options, though – either making it into a multiplayer dungeon or having the single player solo Zhaitan.

That army of NPCs? Could make a reappearance. It would be impossible to show everyone who is fighting the battle simultaneously anyway (it’s a lot more than five,) so you’re always going to have to imagine lots of other people are participating too.

Personally, I didn’t mind the last mission being a dungeon because I was with a nice group of people, but it did bother me that my character wasn’t in the cutscenes. It made it feel less like the culmination of my personal story that someone I’d never met before was doing all the talking.

That particular issue could have been fixed by splitting the dialog between us, though, so that everyone got at least one line and no one’s character was monopolizing it all. I really wish they’d done that at least, even if it was going to be a dungeon.

My advice for this mission would be: don’t revive the NPCs. You’ll just rack up more deaths for yourself, and they’ll die again almost instantly because they don’t try to take cover. It’s not worth the risk. Just assume you’re going to have to solo it.

Focus on pulling one guard behind the pillars at a time and dispatching them. When they’re gone, the NPCs should pop back up automatically, and you can throw everything you have at the Mouth.

It’s not an easy mission in any case and you’ll likely die a few times, but that was what worked best for me.

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Why would anyone design a game where 80% can be completed solo but, not the last 20%?

Because it’s an MMO is not an excuse!

Because you can’t please 100% of your playerbase 100% of the time.

Requiring that absolutely everything be solo-able would limit what content ANet can provide to their other players who don’t mind grouping up for some things. It doesn’t make sense to completely ignore those players and limit the content they can make just so solo-only people don’t have a single thing in the game that doesn’t please them.

I play solo most of the time myself, for the record.

I just think if 80% of a game is adaptable to my preferred play style, that’s actually pretty good odds – I can branch out if I want to, and if I don’t, I can still play the majority of the game the way I normally do.

The game has to accommodate many people’s needs and can’t cater fully to any single preference to the exclusion of others.

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I find it easier to RP in a relatively safe area for the very basic reason that typing while trying to fight/move/dodge is awkward.

I like the idea of more roleplay out in the world or in dungeons, but the practicalities get in the way when taking the time to type your character’s responses in chat could get you killed.

Minimalism in chat is kind of required for intense combat situations , and I think that’s going to be rather hard to get around even though it would theoretically be fun.

Twice Daily Daily?

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

At this perspective it would be better to have each server reset at midnight for each timezone, as in, EU servers would reset at GMT 0 (midnight for them), and NA servers would reset at GMT -… for wherever the server is in North America. Then, you could implement a formula to offset the rest of the time difference (for those players who play in timezones they don’t live in, etc.) with a function similar to a “fill-in from browser” seen on Wikis. This would minimize the amount that players could actually complete the Daily more than once per calendar day, and allow them to complete it whenever they chose each day.

While this would indeed work, I don’t see a need for it.

I just don’t see a problem here that requires a more complex system of server resets.

Why complicate what doesn’t seem to be broken? What does it matter how people time their dailies?

Twice Daily Daily?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

The point I’m trying to make is that this “Daily” can potentially be completed twice in a 24 hour timespan. By that virtue it is no longer a Daily.

It can be done more than once in 24 hours depending on how you allot your time, but it can only be done once per calendar day (beginning at midnight GMT.) So it’s still daily.

How you distribute your time within that calendar day is up to you.

Why do most of you prefer to play alone?

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I mostly play solo when I’m exploring because it doesn’t seem worth negotiating with strangers about a plan for what we’re going to do. If I end up doing the same thing as another player for awhile, that’s cool and I’m fine with their presence, but I see no reason to formally group up.

Things like hearts, DEs, and grabbing POIs go by so quickly that when I try to party up with people for them, we spend more time discussing what we’re going to do next than actually playing, or else we all go our separate ways anyway so we might as well not be a party in the first place.

If I’m going to do something social, I’d rather arrange to meet up with a guildmate, do a dungeon, or help someone with a story mission (although I rarely see anyone asking for that) where we have a clear objective, and aren’t trying to coordinate our own agendas for exploration.

The particular hour at which it resets puts it squarely in the middle of prime playing time for many Americans, so it’s probably just switching to a new day while you’re running around. Because of this, it can appear you’re doing it twice, but you really aren’t. It just resets earlier in the day than most people expect it to.

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Be careful – what you’re saying is “people who destroy their lives through alcoholism don’t deserve help.” :P

No, I think the “aggressive” and “attack you” parts are also key to the issue.

The problem isn’t that the Skritt are imbibing intemperately, it’s that the PC is in actual physical danger from their behaviour when trying to provide help as a result. It’s not their own lives that the Skritt may be destroying – it’s also the lives of the potential rescuers themselves at risk.

I think your explanation that followed is a good one, but the issue isn’t quite what’s stated here. It’s more like saying “Is it really wise to help someone who may physically harm you in the process?”, which is a much more complex moral dilemma.

Fionghuala skritt deserve our help?

in Lore

Posted by: Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Several DE areas make clear that Skritt behave extremely unpredictably (often increasing in aggression) when they drink alcohol. So I think the alcohol involved here is the key factor in how they act toward the PC.

In several cases, too, we’re helping groups not so much because they deserve it, but because they are useful to the Pact. I think that may be the case here, since Timberline is a somewhat strategic area as a buffer for Orr. It would be much better to have an ally in that location than an enemy or even a neutral party.

Sorry that your rhetorical question isn’t so rhetorical.

Seeking for the best fix

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I think that making sure future events go smoothly is more important than retroactively trying to “fix” Lost Shores. So I’d like to see ANet prioritize learning from this experience.

Most important aspect of that, in my opinion, is to take steps to ensure that their server capacity can handle what they’re trying to implement. I think it’ll take a combination of better stress testing, judicious use of instancing and/or temporarily lowering population caps per server, and probably separating free preview events from in-game events until/unless they improve their ability to handle crowds of people.

Even it out: Reward those who played.

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I spent 3 grueling hours of my sunday to get a chance at that big chest and I would be furious if ANET gave that karka earring/bag to everyone that participated… That actually made all the time i spent WORTH IT.

I spent more time on the event than you did, but I got nothing because I lost my event progress every time I got (repeatedly) disconnected. After my repair bills, I lost money participating in the event.

How is it less worthwhile for you if other people also get rewarded for our time?

I don’t actually expect to get anything. If I was sent something – even something small and had no coin value – that said, “Hey, we acknowledge that you were there and it matters that you played,” I’d be completely satisfied. I’m not holding my breath, but it’s a nice thought.

A response would be nice

in The Lost Shores

I actually think it’s a good thing for ANet to take the time they need to ensure they’re responding in a way that’s fair and appropriate. I know it can be hard to wait in the meantime, but in situations like this a kneejerk response can cause more harm than it solves. ANet has to think this through carefully before they take any action.

They’ve said they’re thinking about it and working on a solution. I’m going to take them at their word on that, and assume that they’re doing their best. When they make a decision, it’ll probably be a better one than they would have made if they’d just thrown around extra rewards on the fly without thinking through all the implications.

Since different officers were involved in the incidents, it suggests that this may be a climate of hubris established by the top brass, rather than just one individual making a poor decision. Anakita Snakecharm.4360

I did have a bit of lag problem but I didn’t die because I just played carefully, never rushed for damage or loot, even gave up on some loot I could see.

I don’t think you’re understanding what some of us experienced when we say we had lag.

We don’t mean the interface was a little slow. We mean lag where you literally can’t move from the spot where you’re standing, skills can take up to a full minute or even two to activate, pets won’t respond to swap commands when they run out of health, and even if you manage to move enough to dodge, the enemies aren’t rendering in motion so you can’t see what they’re doing until they’re on top of you, so good luck figuring out when to do it.

Not every server/overflow had this issue. (I got disconnected several times, so I can vouch for that.) Some of us did, though.

Lag can become so significant that it’s literally impossible to compensate, because you can’t move or see what’s going on, and your skills don’t activate on request.

I’m glad you didn’t experience that. But I did, and it wasn’t just “a bit” of lag.

No experience from kills?

I’m in the middle of phase 3 on one of the overflow servers, and I’ve been getting 0 experience off kills for a good half an hour now. Is this happening to others as well?

I’m only getting XP occasionally. I think it’s because we’re lagging so badly that our hits aren’t registering and we aren’t able to tag the mobs before they go down. The mobs have lots of health, but at least for me, skills are taking sometimes over a minute to activate. If you watch when the skills you’re triggering actually hit, you may find this is the same issue you’re having.

Another huge problem is the disconnects. This sounds like a minor issue, except that the main events’ progress is server-bound… meaning that if you get disconnected, you will find yourself in a completely different version of the event when you return and lose all your previous event progress.

Odds are fairly good (in my experience) that the new version of the event will be one of the following:

1.) Already over.

2.) In progress with no or insufficient players, resulting in instant death and no rez.

3.) Have moved on to a different place or not have moved yet, meaning you’re suddenly in the wrong area with multiple mobs between you and where you need to be, again with no one to help.

This is another server load issue – we’re getting disconnected because the servers are working too hard. That just can’t happen, though, if event progress is lost when you get kicked into a different overflow. I literally have not gotten credit for a single scheduled event I attended because of this, including ones I participated heavily in but then got booted before the end.

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Anakita Snakecharm.4360

Yeah. At this point I’m just relogging over and over trying to get out of overflow. Because there is just. No. Way.

I was doing the event in a big group, and it was going fine – got disconnected, ended up in an overflow where two other people were fighting the same enemies as the group was, now I’m a corpse on the ground beside their corpses.

Most of the waypoints are gone, so I’m going to have to swim the whole way here if I want to try again. There’s no one to rez me. I’m just going to die again anyway.

Considering just logging out for today. I’ve been a good sport about this event so far I think even though hardly anything has been working for me, but now I’m really, really frustrated. Logging over and over to try to find a workable number of people to do the event or watching myself lying dead on the ground are not fun uses of my Sunday afternoon.

I never thought I’d say this, but I regret arranging my day so I could be here for this. There were other things I could have been doing instead.

Which makes sense. Except… I’ve been fighting veteran karka, and their shells fall off with enough normal damage.

So… did this happen? And if so, what was the secret to cracking open their shells?

I was at the first event but got d/ced before the cutscene, wasn’t able to make today’s, completed all of the investigation quest chain that I could but the Largos was bugged so I missed anything after that. So I probably just missed when the solution was found.

This happened to me.

I guess I’m cool with not getting any sort of tangible reward – it would have been nice, but I can live without it – but I’m disappointed that after the effort I put in I didn’t even get to see how it ended.

I got disconnected and found myself in an overflow with a bunch of other people who were also asking, “Wait, what just happened?” and all I had to indicate I’d even been there was a repair bill.

I guess it’s good that so many people wanted to play. It was just kind of a personal disappointment that it ended on such a down note for me. Hopefully if there was a cutscene, I can find it on YouTube.

Diminishing returns need to go.

Anything exotic requires grinding whether from gold or from exotic mats.

I haven’t found this to be the case. I’m in full exotics (four weapons and full armour) as of today when I finished saving for the boots.

I’ve just been doing world exploration, gathering, and crafting, and I haven’t had any trouble accumulating the gold and karma I needed over time. I just didn’t get it as fast as people doing the same most profitable things over and over… but I never felt like I was grinding, it was just gameplay.

Obviously some exotics cost more than others, and I cut down my gold costs by buying some of my stuff with karma. I’m not saying no one would ever have to work harder than I have to get what they need. I’m just saying that in my experience, it’s not true that anything exotic is super duper hard to get.

I’ve found that making sure you do the dailies every day (on the days you have time to log in, obviously) is a big help. It’s a pretty large payoff compared to the modest effort it takes, and most of it is stuff you’d be doing anyway when you’re exploring.

I love Trahearne

Trahearne’s job is not fun people! It’s a managerial role for which he is highly suited. If you had gotten the job, you couldn’t be off “adventuring”. Please think carefully about what you are asking for and be grateful that Trahearne is doing all the boring stuff, so you can do all the exciting stuff.

Really? That’s funny, because I seem to recall Trahearne tagging along on quite a lot of my missions after about Level 50 or so.

And that’s the problem – the game tries to have it both ways. It would make sense for Trahearne to be the leader taking care of the mundane stuff, kind of like General Soulkeeper for the Vigil and whoever has similar rank in the other orders. They were also your superior officers, and they left you to get the job done.

The thing is, the game won’t just leave it at that when it comes to Trahearne. The game insists on forcing him into the spotlight over and over. He’s both the leader and somehow has to star in many of your missions. I think that’s actually the biggest problem.

The Pact leadership could be peripheral, like the orders leadership was – but it isn’t. It’s treated as a central aspect of the story, and since it’s about another character, it makes the story seem to be about him.

The story would seem more personal in my opinion, even if it was about your character as a footsoldier, if the focus was on footsoldiers rather than on the hierarchy.
