Having said that, I do agree that there needs to be a confirmation pop-up any time you’re sending anything other than words. It shouldn’t matter if what you’re sending is gold, items, armor, or boosters. A simple pop-up could prevent so many player errors.

AP, a real measurement of player ability?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

In general, AP is not an indicator of ability, however, in order to get “over 9000” AP, one has to have at least a cursory knowledge of the mechanics of some parts of the game.

Those with less than about 2500 usually have mostly general PvE experience from hearts, DE’s and leveling, and not a lot of dungeon specific experience. This is not to say that they are not able to run a dungeon, as there are those who are good, even though they may not have been playing for very long.

So, while not an indicator of skill, it is an indicator of having been in the game for a while and knowing the basics.

The best thing to do in any case, is to simply ask. If (almost) all of my AP comes from Dungeons, I am going to be more able to run one with less than 5K as someone whose AP is over 9K but comes from general PvE. (figuratively speaking)

Reasons why Guild Wars 2 is awesome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

I am sure that I am simply reiterating what a lot of others have said, but I’m going to list them anyway.

No node stealing Everyone can chop the same tree, or mine the same vein.
No mob tagging Kind of like nodes, if you hit a mob, the next person will still get credit if they hit it too.
No Mounts The waypoint system is pretty cool. If they introduce mounts, I hope they do it like they did the broom. Same walk/run speed, just animated. (although my preference is for none at all.)
The ability to take a brand new character to sPvP or WvW yeah, I’ll still die in WvW because I’m not traited, but I can go there. Sometimes that’s enough
Gorgeous, big world Every corner you turn out in the world has a view, it seems. From the towering mountains of the Shiverpeaks to the swamps of Caladon, the graphics people should get much more praise than I can give. My only real wish is for more deserts.
Downleveling Yes, I know. fully traited level 80 players can faceroll a level 10 mob, but it’s nice to know that if I go out with a guildie and their new character, I can still get credit for DEs and kills. Some of the encounters are actually difficult. Those champ trains are victims of zerg numbers. A downleveled 80 can still solo a champ, but it’s definitely a challenge. How many other games can you say that about?
Children Something I have always loved about this game. When you go into a town, there are children playing. Some game worlds are made up of adults only. Makes them kind of creepy.
ANet Tags It’s nice to see that the people who work for the game actually PLAY the game. Ya, I know they play without their tags, but it is still nice to see them occasionally. Makes me think they really do like the game as much as I do.
Guilds I love the fact that you’re not restricted to one. Now, if they would only bring on the GvG…
NPCs I love walking around and seeing the NPC conversations. (I would listen, but I am partially deaf and my electronic ears don’t like speakers/headphones.)
The destruction of LA ok, so…I know this is an odd one, but let me explain: LA was the hub of everything. Seeing it get destroyed showed me that the developers are not afraid to change anything. Walking around in its aftermath brought me some extremely strong feelings and dredged up some real world memories as well. I know I wasn’t alone in shedding a tear or two at the note from the little boy looking for his mom and dad…AND WHERE IS RAISIN FACE???? Good Job, ANet!

Throw a party
See how far you can get with a character in drops/merchant armor only
Become the #1 Keg Brawler
Hold contests for your guildies
Buy the instruments and put together a minstrel band

The thing is that there can be a lot to do that has absolutely nothing to do with gaining uber gear or grinding AP. The key to it all is how much you let your imagination run wild.

If you literally can’t think of another thing to do, then take a break. Go play another game for a while, if you like. Or, better yet, there is an MMO out there with a lifetime worth of experiences called “Outside in the Real World.” Sometimes getting away from the computer is good for you.

I think we need the PS, if for no other reason than some people actually want to complete it for the sense of accomplishment. It is also the only linear story that leads you through most of the races’ respective zones, unlike hearts and DE’s which are pretty location dependent.

I do think, however, that in light of the destruction of LA, that those parts of the PS need to be redone to allow for it. I could see meeting up with Tybalt in DR or Hoelbrak, for instance, instead of LA.

Every time there’s a new “big” game release, this topic comes up.

MMOs in general tend to wax and wane with the phases of the moon, so yes, the game is losing some people, but it is also gaining some people at the same time.

Just because you log in and there’s nobody there right now doesn’t mean your server/homeworld is dead. It means that there’s nobody there at that moment. If it is consistently “dead” at the times you play, consider moving to a server that has more people online during the times you want to play. I know a lot of folks who are NA but their homeworld is on an EU server because of this. Not everyone has a 9-5 job and can play during “normal” peak hours.

As for total game population, who cares? It’s up this week, down the next. What truly matter is whether or not you’re having fun.

I do sympathize with you, however the question begs to be asked…

Is crafting a Legendary Weapon the defining outcome of the game to you? What would you do once you have crafted your preferred Legendary Item?

I don’t ask to be snarky, as some people have the goal of gaining every last BiS piece of gear, others just want to be competitive in WvW, and yet others only want that Legendary carrot on the stick.

In the end, it depends upon exactly how badly you want to craft that Legendary. If the need is bad enough, the safest, most guaranteed method of getting your precusor is the WOTC* method. Then and only then are you guaranteed to get your precursor. Otherwise, be prepared to keep on doing what you’re doing now and hope something comes through….

Good luck.

Opinions on the Entire GW2 Patch Update?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

Ok, you asked for opinions, and here goes (TL;DR at the bottom of the post):

Anet is impementing a feature patch. Some of the things have been asked for since launch. Some of the things are kind of “iffy” but if they work in the long run, I am all for them.

  • Trait change. While the system seems ok, why the need to introduce something so drastically different over a year since release?

I don’t think the trait change is going to be that bad. There’s going to be more than one way to obtain them, and I do like the idea of chasing traits being a reason to go out and see the world.

  • Build change after grind to Ascended gear.
  • DPS nerf with the zerk nerf. /snip

The Zerker build is still going to be the most useful for pure DPS. I don’t think the reduction in damage is going to be as impactful as people seem to think it will be. If you chose to grind for Ascended and made them Zerker, you’re still going to be the “uber player” so I wouldn’t worry about it too awfully much until you see it in action.

  • Acc-bound Dyes (?): One Unindentified Dye does not make up for 2 Abyssesl!

I have no sympathy for you on this one. I have 3, and I don’t see it as a problem. This just means that I saved myself (insert obscene amount of gold) buying one for my other 4 alts. This is a thing that people have been asking, no, screaming for since launch. I’m sorry you’re out the gold, but that’s just too bad. This is a great change!

  • Megaserver: loosing the ability to see which Waypoints are contested. /snip
  • Megaserver: unable to see the status of Orr Temples./snip
  • Megaserver: Gathering Nodes. /snip
  • Megaserver: loosing the ability to create a gathering map for fellow players.
  • Megaserver: negative impact on ESTABLISHED COMMUNITIES.
  • Megaserver: problem with running events with allied guilds /snip
  • Megaserver: TAKING THE CHOICE AWAY from players./snip
  • Megaserver = overflows. /snip
  • Megaserver: loss of In-Game Events “meet at X pm at server Y”.
  • Megaserver Megaboss TIMERS: /snip

You’re absolutely sure? You’ve played with the megaserver and you know all of this to be absolute truth? Anet themselves have said that they are implementing the megaserver ONLY IN CERTAIN AREAS to begin with so they can see how it is working, and they’re not rolling it out to the entire in-game world until later in the year. How about we see it in play before we take the Chicken Little route?

In a way, I kind of agree with you on this one. Changing the game this much a year and a half down the road is risky. I don’t think it will be the Doom and Gloom I see in the forums, but I do see an “adapt or die” situation for the players.

With poorly developed story, and constant nerfs / changes to builds, my server community was the only thing that kept me playing. When they fully take servers away, it’s bye bye GW2.

Personally, I think that the community won’t disappear. I think that if nothing else, the community may be a bit more cohesive because we’re not going to be restricted to whatever world we’re on for the most part. Server loyalty is great for WvW, but for PvE it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. How many threads have we seen from people who are complaining about (server name) guesting to (other server name) in order to farm events? Again, this is something I have seen crop up in the forums before. The need for individual homeworlds is not as great as you seem to think except in WvW where they’re still going to be segregated anyway. How about we see the implementation before we get our knickers in a twist, eh?

TL;DR:
Anet is releasing a massive patch. We have no control over that. We are going to have to get used to the changes and adapt.

The thing is that we can rant and rave all we want, but in the end, we’re not going to know how the patch will affect the game until after it goes live. How about we stop predicting the end of the game until then?

Lion's Arch Rebuild takes 1-2 years.

in Living World

In a way, I almost wish they wouldn’t rebuild at all.

Turn it into a memorial of the way things used to be, and the people who died. Put up plaques and lists of the dead, and lists of the heros. And, at the center, where the lion statue used to be, a monolith with a picture of the statue on it.

Then, build a new hub somewhere. Call it New LA or something, but make it so that it doesn’t look like all the flotsam in the world piled up in one place. Make it real, with real buildings and parks, and markets. Build a great wall around it for protection from the ground, and use some of that “found” technology to build lasers for protection from the sky. Give it a real government, and a council chamber, and offices for the 3 Orders.

In other words, scrap the old LA and make a new one that actually looks like a city on the scale of DR or Rata Sum.

[Suggestion] Mounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

The reason that no one wants mounts in the game is because it would only make for more screen clutter and lag for everyone. Especially in WvW. GW2 has enough screen clutter going on in World Boss events and big events.
Yeah it would be cool and all that, but it really isn’t worth it

This^

Let’s say they introduced a horse mount…

Inside of 2 weeks there would be 6 more threads on “I wants me some moar mounts!”

Then Anet releases cows.

Rinse and repeat, replacing cows with whatever you wish.

Pretty soon, there are giant rainbow dragonfly mounts, clouds, you name it, running all over everyone’s screen.

And there will be over 9000 threads in the forum about “Why is the FPS down to 2?”

now… can we please bury this dead horse?

Feature Update vs. Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

I think the devs are trying to put the horse back in front of the cart with this patch and while it does not address everything (and that said, we haven’t seen the actual notes yet) it does target many of the flash point concerns with regard to horizontal and vertical elements of the game.

Additionally, not only did the LS reveal the difficulties in trying to tell a story, it exposed some weakness in the very foundations of the game. So, I also think this patch is laying a lot of new or fixed groundwork that will help season 2 be more successful; if nothing else than from an implementation and logistical standpoint (See: Megaservers addressing guesting to servers that have good numbers to complete marionette and LA events).

I agree wholeheartedly! I think this Feature Pack is going to be interesting to see.

However, I was not really asking about this. We see a lot of threads about Expansions (which may or may not include Cantha and Elona) and whatnot, but not a lot is said about minor content additions that could be rolled out incrementally.

I was asking about small things that could go a long way to alleviate some of the cravings for added permanent content rather than bug fixes, Profession balance and the Feature Pack stuff.

Feature Update vs. Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

The Feature Pack coming this month is a very good start (in my opinion) down the road to fixing what’s wrong with this game. Kudos, Anet, and keep fighting the good fight!

Having said that, I feel that the players in general need some content as well.

I am not talking about a massive expansion or the start of the next LS season, but rather some additional permanent content.

What I am envisioning:

  • A new zone or area to explore every 3 or 4 months – Not a huge continent, but maybe something on the order of the Isle of Janthir or Far Shiverpeaks, with more Hearts, DE’s and Meta Events for the zones. After the 6th or 7th alt, the same ol’ same ol’ gets boring.
  • A new dungeon every 6 or 7 months
  • Minigames – There are a lot of possibilities such as the shooting gallery in DR, or a real Moa Race that one “becomes the moa” rather than placing a bet and watching from the sidelines
  • Individual Instanced Challenges after one has finished their own PS
  • 1 vs 1 Arenas (I miss duelling)
  • Guild vs. Guild – Give us a reaon to be loyal to one guild above the others

What would y’all like to see in the way of SMALL content additions to the game?

(This is just a suggestion thread involving content only. Please don’t add things like “Balancing the professions” and “Fix the TP” to this thread.)

There’s a lot of “little things” that I miss about GW1, but in general, most of them are not really “needed” here.

BUT>>>

The one thing I really miss, and wish we could have is Build Templates. It was great that we could switch from a pure nuker to a pure support character with the click of a button depending on what was needed for the situation. The template system was so good, and it was “shareable.” If saw someone doing something that worked well, you could ask for the template and add it to your repertoire and try it for yourself.

I must put in a disclaimer here that a build template system would be no real use without the ability to switch armors as well. They went hand in hand.

Not enough gold sinks?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

Yes, I have my flameproof armor on.

As we are aware, Anet is planning on removing a couple of gold sinks. Admittedly, they aren’t a big sink, but they still remove a good sum from the economy as they are now. In fact, armor repair is the only service that removed gold and required almost every player to use.

Here’s my problem: Although removing some gold sinks is making some people happy, how is it affecting the game?

I know there are massive sinks with crafting and building legendaries, but in general, what about the non-crafters and those who don’t care to get legendaries? Except for transportation (waypoints) armor repair and buying fluff such as dyes there just aren’t that many. I am worried that the increase in gold (however small) in the economy will make inflation even worse.

Maybe someone more versed in economics can shed some light.

Why all the Sylvari hate?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

People don’t realize that there has been racial tension all along among all the races.

Asuras barely tolerate Humans and call most non-Asuran races Bookahs (from the wiki: Bookah – “Bookah” is a large, loud, bellowing, and dumb imaginary creature that the Asura used to frighten their children. Since their surfacing, they use the term to refer to those they view as inferior beings, which to them is almost everyone who is not an Asura. Bookah is also one of the few known words of the old spoken Asuran language known to outsiders.)

Norn are friendly with Charr (same outlook on life and all that) but only tolerate humans because they have to.

Humans hate Charr for obvious GW1 reasons, but are warming up to them, although a lot of Charr still refer to a Human as a “mouse” or in some cases, “lunch.”

Although prior to Scarlet nobody outright hated the Sylvari, the races in general are doing the exact same thing as we real humans do when there is a specific individual responsible for horrific actions. We tend to distrust the whole nationality until one generation gives way to the next. (and yes, I am referencing “That Guy” from WW2.)

So, I do think that the tension will get better, but for now, the end result has made me create a Sylvari so I can experience the world from their point of view. I do think they will play a large part in the next LS season.

Solid Foundation = Housing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashabhi.1365

Ashabhi.1365

I understand that a lot of people want player housing, but looking at it objectively (I could care less one way or the other) I am thinking the “solid foundation” is more along the lines of teaching people how to play before they get bombarded with “L2P N00B!” in general chat. Maybe some tutorials, or expanded starter areas with more tasks to illustrate different aspects such as combo fields, or to teach dodging and jumping.

It could also be some of the core systems are being optimized and stabilized, which won’t be so evident in our daily play time, but might make things smoother.

Housing (and to some extent Guild Halls) are not really features so much as added content. If they do bring in those QoL additions, I would hope they do it “right” and don’t give us a half-finished product only to have to fix them later.

From what I read, I got that they’re reducing the raw gold from champ bags, so I would assume it’s all champs.

It might make a big difference for those who exclusively run champ trains but it will only affect me in that instead of getting my gold in raw coinage, I’ll get it from other means.

[Suggestions] Guild Improvements

I agree with most of this, except the Guild Party function. I think it’s redundant, and game breaking to allow more than the standard number of players in a party.

An indicator on the map and guild chat should be sufficient.

One thing I would like to see, tho, is Alliances. That way, Guild A and Guild B could unite to go do Missions, especially if they are both small guilds.

oh, and I second the idea that we need to do something about losing guild chat when changing characters.

Exotic gear frustrations

To the OP:

Before anyone else complains how much of a “newb” you are, and that gold is easy to come by, let me address some of your concerns.

If all you want is Temple Armor from the Karma vendors, it is relatively easy to guest on different servers to find one where the waypoint and corresponding karma merchant is open, as long as you have them unlocked for your character. All Karma armor is soulbound, so you will need to pick your stats before you make the effort.

Having said that, there are sets on the TP that will do much better for you as far as stats go. You are welcome to add me to your friend list in-game and I will be happy to help you pick the stats you need for your play style.

On the other hand, if you are wanting the dungeon armor from the vendor that used to be in LA (and are now in Vigil Keep,) you will need to spend the gold to get something to get by with, and then turn in the tokens you get from running the dungeons in order to get the dungeon skins, and then transmute them on to your preferred armor set, which again can be either Karma armor or TP armor…

Exotic armor is relatively easy to get, but you will still need to pick your stats carefully. Some armor is exceedingly expensive (even though only exotic) and some not so much.

Good luck to you!

Would you even WANT a new class/race?

Race? Sure, as long as it’s non-human.

Class? I am not sure… I would give my eye teeth and some other body parts to have the Ritualist back, but not sure how it would work in the GW2 version of Tyria. We are also short one “heavy” class, but every one I have imagined take away from the existing ones, so I think the best thing to do is just say that I want ANet to fix and support the classes we have before attempting to bring a new one into play.

Wish they lumped it with another day. I know there is a lot more but this is pretty underwhelming by itself.

Actually, it’s pretty major. The Last Logged In feature is something we’ve been literally BEGGING for since release. Hopefully there will be a few more details about the “reducing griefing” issues to come.

Now, if they would only separate “Invite” and “Kick” so we can better edit permissions.

Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat

I am sure that it may have been answered somewhere, but I got a couple of hats that I like, but haven’t been able to wear them because I didn’t buy any town clothes…

If I wear the hats, will I look like I am wearing my armor and a hat, or will it be the generic town clothing that comes with a new character wearing the hat?

Rising ire against Sylvari

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

An odd side effect of this LS and the dislike of the Sylvari race by ever increasing numbers (in-game) has caused me to do something I have never done….

I created a Sylvari character in order to see the “other side” of everything.

I have never wanted to play a salad before, but with the upcoming LS season, I am almost sure that the salad race will have a larger part to play in it, so I am going to explore the possibilities.

I just hope that Anet doesn’t get cold feet and decide that it’s more PC to avoid the whole racial issue. That would be sad. On the other hand, if Anet does allow racial tensions to boil, I can see some factioned play in our future, which is n’t a bad thing either.

In fact, I think it would be great if they explored a general distaste for Sylvari across the world, and then brought everyone back together when the “real” threat descends upon Tyria.

There have been posts in other threads that noted how the destruction gave some people flashbacks to 9/11.*

Things that were taken for granted are gone. People we knew are simply no more (where are you, Raisin face?) Walking around drives the total destruction home in different ways for different individuals.

I just hope that we don’t log in one day and find that it has magically reappeared all shiny and new. I hope they take their time and rebuild it little by little so we have more invested in the “New LA” as we did in the old.

*One may insert any destructive force such as Loma-Linda quake or the Joplin tornado (of which I am intimately familiar.)
