If an item’s graph line increases a substantially vertically within a very small period of time that is probably a sign of market manipulation
Dragon events: I call it the pedicure time. Thats when a dragon comes down to get some service and we all run and furiously try to provide it.
Because really, all we do in essence is await in agony until those dragon feet are shiny and fresh again.
Because really, all we do is attack a dragon’s foot for half an hour.
I say just put all precursors on an npc vendor for 400g.
Allow us to keep getting them as very rare loots/mystic forge rewards as we do now, just have the vendor sell account bound precursors too. So now all the precursors will sell for less than 400g and it’ll never be too out of hand. Great money sink for the game too for anyone that ends up buying from the vendor due to lack of availability on the TP.
God no. Some precursors are currently less than 200g even. Doing what you suggest with cause an inflation of all precursor prices in the market to match the 400g of the vendor’s offer.
Or is it that you assume that everyone wants a GS precursor?
My guess is that it would probably be very similar to real world economics, where 1% of the people own 99% of the wealth.
If they start posting confirmations on this, we’ll end up with an “occupy wall street” movement in game. Players flooding the trading post in protest. Players refusing to buy/sell materials until changes are made to the game. Huge market crashes as the wealthy players try to offload everything they own in response. Chaos.
While there will be some superficial similarities, I seriously doubt the wealth inequality in game will mirror real world inequality as there are a number of factors that drive inequality in real economies that don’t exist in-game
For example, in the real world, having wealth enables you to create/find rent-seeking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent_seeking) opportunities that don’t exist in this virtual economy. As a result, those who have already wealth in this game are generally not able to use that wealth to prevent others from gaining wealth.
You are correct. There are several good reasons why wealth distributions in game don’t mimic the US Economy.
Another reason is that the growth of wealth is exponential in many developed economies, where it’s closer to logarithmic in GW2.The entire set of reasons would be a very interesting discussion…Well for me at least
I really don’t understand how it is logarithmic. That implies a sort of normalization which i don’t really see in the game. To me wealth distribution really seems exponential just like the real economy
Care to provide more food for the brain?
Those who rightfully earn their legendary are usually well known in their server because they do spend a lot of time farming/dungeoning together and help/receive help from their guild mates or friends.
Those tho matter around you will know that you earned your well deserved legendary and that’s the most important part.
As odd as it may seem, it works the same way in real life.
Everyone else may burn in envy or say anything about you, or even call you a legendary wallet. It is in fact what you are doing right now with this post. You make the false assumption that there’s actually a large percentage of people who are willing to pay such sums of real money to get a legendary or have gotten one through chearing/exploits. And if they did, how does that affect you?
I am 2 weeks away from mine, having not spent a single penny and when i get it it would have been 9 weeks at most since i started planning for it, specifically.
What matters is what i and my friends around me know about my struggle, not anyone else.
Ignorance is bliss, my friend.
Hey everyone I’m Almar of AlmarsGuides.com; you may recognize my name as I have been making guides for Gw2 since shortly after release. This guide is one of my newer ones that I am quite proud of since it helps not only people playing gw2 make money but really people playing any mmorpg/wanting to play with any market they can find. Now don’t worry, I haven’t put this guide together in some annoying format where you have to read through 400 pages to get useful information, it’s all here in this video!
A little bit about me incase you are saying to yourself ‘who does this guy think he is? Coming into my forums and boasting about this crap?!? Get him boys!’ What I do in games is play with economies, whether I can make them bend to my will, crash them or just simply make enough gold to please myself. I dislike grouping and I dislike raiding. What i like to do is farm and play with the economies and occasionally PvP when I get bored of farming.
If you watch my video you’ll know that this giant nerd knows what he is talking about with economies. You don’t even have to watch the video if you don’t want too, just pop it open in a different tab and listen in, if you’re disappointed I will come to your house and give you a back rub for the time you spent listening to my video, ultimately returning your lost time too you. Honestly, I’ll do it!!
Good luck and happy hunting everyone!
Are you the guy who constantly mentions that he enjoys manipulating the markets and then attempts the become the good samaritan in educating us here about how to do the same?
Are you also the guy who constantly posts on gw2db with your adds to lure people into buying HIGHLY manipulated products?

Build some credibility in the community before posting guides.
most definitely Clocktower in terms of a challenge
This could be fulfilled by a contract order just like in Eve online.
Will we see such a thing? Doubtful
Out there is a sinister group of people in black suits and sunglasses sitting around a round table in a high rise office building with laptops all watching the trading post.
They personally decide who gets to buy each item in the game, having bought every item in existence long ago. Every time one of us buys an item at their manipulated price, they laugh and sip on martinis from an oversized kittentail glass.
Paranoia has reached new horizons
This thread has been discussed for a while, merged with other threads and has been going on strong for a while. I believe we deserve to get some input on what the approach to this issue will be
Well I spend 780g worth of rares and exotics on my task to either get dawn dusk or colossus. I ended up with colossus today, keep trying!
Keep trying to do what exactly? Spend twice as much as you should to get the same item, through gambling instead?
In the name of logic, please do not keep trying and save your gold to buy the precursor directly.
All they need to do is allow the sparks to be available 100% of the time, regardless on whether we have the temple or not. That will normalize things to a percentage which would be much more acceptable without causing a lodestone market crash
Hey guys,
Just to help provide some clarity on this, we’ll be releasing within the next couple of weeks a high level summary of our big plans for the first half of 2013 to help provide more transparency into our plans with the game going forward. This will include providing more details about our goals for the game, information about the stories and features that you’ll see in the Jan/Feb/March releases.
To set expectations accordingly, the January release will be a relatively small release that sets the table for the stories and features we plan to roll out with the Feb/March releases and beyond. Also, there will be no new race, profession, or new region with these larger Feb/March releases. One of our major goals with these releases is making our existing world as strong as possible, ensuring there are reasons to go to all the locations in the world we’ve already built, and strengthening the core game we’ve provided. In saying this will be an expansions worth of stuff in these releases, we’re talking about the number of new features that will be rolled out across PvE, WvW, and PvP in early 2013, which usually you’d only find in an expansion for a traditional MMORPG.
More details and specifics to come in the next couple of weeks, but I hope that helps provide some more insight into what to expect at a very high level.
Thank you for the heads up.
I would really, really appreciate any input on what to expect in terms of the Market shifts and how it is affecting some of us in acquiring our precursors/lodestones. Is there any thought of improvement? A yes or no would be enough so that i will be able to realistically plan out my approach to this issue.
We’ll be releasing more information on our blog in the next couple weeks that details our plans for first half of 2013, including more details on the kind of stories and features you’ll see in the January, February and March releases.
Anything on Legendary item requirement adjustments? The Lodestones, Colin, the lodestones…
They be killing us!
I am starting to think these “2 big updates for January and February” we were promised will really be ONE update launched at the end of January and continuing through till February.
They said the fractal changes will not come into effect till the end of this month, plus on there Facebook page they have a poll to select what member of Destiny’s Edge will be there Facebook cover, normally the Facebook cover would advertise that months event. Also the monthly achievement for January has nothing related to any special event unlike previous monthly’s.
So sadly i have a horrible feeling we will be very bored till late January, maybe even the very last week of January, and this “2 huge patches” was a lie.i actully think their will be 2 patches on in Jan one in Feb
but hell i dont think at all they will be huge, somehow by Anet they will be considered huge but i say this
IF people are Expecting some huge Things coming oh my
your gonna get disappointed…………. and this time its Anets fault for using the words Like an !Expansion!
The word expansion is usually used when there is at least one new zone and a new profession/race.
The new profession has been confirmed already(somewhere on gw2guru.com) Please site this since i’m at work and i can’t surf too much.
Nice try, getting people to buy that silk. It will drive the gossamer prices down further which suits me fine though.
So, you leader was banned likely rightfully, and the guild is risking to fall apart?
Sounds fair to me. When a leader is cheating, All the fruits of his labor should be confiscated after he/she has been banned.
Now, that’s what i call fair.
Plus, I thought that being in a guild would be all about the people, not the benefits
Any updates on the lodestone issue? Charged Lodestones seem to be stable between 3.5-4g each
Been anxious to see what January brings to the game, as we have been promised by Anet. I know Devs post on other websites as well.
I am personally more interested to see news regarding the in game economy and whether there are plans to adjust the supply of some items(such as Charged Lodestones and precursors)
Anyone found something yet?
(edited by Ath.2531)
I’ll agree with OP. I like the fact that the no inspect feature allows more conversations
The solution to the problem is to apply a DR on TP earnings.
Pretty much everything in the game has a DR except trading.
Wanna play fair? That’s my fair
Game Economy adjustments.
Application of DR on earnings through TP trading
Making legendaries soulbound
Increasing the supply of extremely expensive crafting materials
Precursor scavenger hunt
Bolt + get a warhorn and enjoy running around like a super sayan, practically uncatchable
It’s a game where you suppose to enjoy lol.
Precisely!
I’m going to say this I’ve played 900 hours over the past 3 month and half. i haven’t played the TP and I’ll tell you this I’m not 20% close to getting my legendary. So for the people not playing the tp and just playing the game, getting a legendary is a far away dream.
I started going for my legendary actively at around 600 hours.
I’m at 750 hours and 75% done towards Bolt, one of the expensive ones.
I do not play the TP
You are doing something very……very wrong.
That is all
Then tell us Mr Ath, how do you go about earning your gold for your legendary without playing the market, because 90% of us would be very interested in that.
Power farming. 2-3G per hour guaranteed, regardless of loot nerfs or not
So your telling me that if say I wanted to get 100 charged lodestones I should power farm for over 100 hours, doing the same thing over and over again.
Lol thats not fun or entertaining thats slave labor.
If you want it as bad as you seem to, you will become as efficient as possible, disregarding every other activity in the game for the one cause: a Legendary. If you don’t; Well, that’s not too bad. Maybe you don’t want it that bad, or that fast for that matter…
Even though i do respect Joe’s efforts and enjoy his shows, GW2 is definitely not a 10/10. Game of a year? maybe. But lets not be hyperbolic
I would welcome a system for dungeons that saw them become useful again, such as catacombs tokens used to buy charged lodestones/cores and corrupt from honor of the waves.
Because after you have your exotic armor/skins that you like tokens are useless except for the gift for your chosen legendary, but that is it.
And I’m talking like 500/1000 tokens per core/lodestone here, nothing easy just something to get people doing dungeons again and off the overcrowded fractal train.
your 500/1000 tokens per core moves us from one grind train into another. Thank you very much but just NO.
Currently, it takes 1-2 hours to farm a lodestone directly by killing sparks and around 1.5 hours to farm the gold for it.
Which psychopath would to 9 or 18 runs of a dungeon for 1 lodestone? Not me, that’s for sure
Atleast its more interesting that grinding the same mob again and again for 2 hours and at the end of it you atleast 100% sure you will be rewarded.
Whatever works for you. All the best in your efforts

find the probability of getting no rare after 7 consecutive times.
Assume its 40%
This is the chance it will happen: 0.0016384
1.6 in a thousand
You’ve just been unlucky.

The thing that’s p*ssing me off is people that control the precursors and jack up the price like crazy in order to get in game gold that they sell for real world money illegally
I really do support you in your views about market manipulation but whatever it is you are doing during those 8 hours i NOT optimal in getting a legendary.
Just because you spend time in a game does not entitle you to a legendary in 2 months. To get it that quickly you need to be practical. Want gold? Farm your kitten for 12 hours straight in cursed shore events. If you are still not earning 2-3g per hour then you should definitely reconsider what your expectations of yourself are in getting a lefendary and why you should get it or not.
They said they would conduct an AMA after the holidays, maybe later this week or next week I would think.
per a response to a post of mine of similar context, Chris Whitenight mentioned an AMA sometime after the new year’s eve
75% towards my bolt.
Bound on acquire AND account bound.
Make it happen
Even if the temple is open for 3-4 hours. You can farm that same mob for an hour and get hit with DR and find nothing.
I have never dropped a lodestone all the times ive farmed there. I have 2 from fractals. 248 more to go and ive been playing for 3 months. Ill have a legendary when im 80. 80 years old.
for just a $1000 you can get those pesky lodestones right now. That’s right!
What gw2 lacks?
COMMUNICATION!(From Anet)
sorry about that, had caps lock on
(edited by Ath.2531)
found it entertaining:)
You are dismissive of other theories based on YOUR experience. If thousands of people are experiencing a problem, it is a real problem. If this person or that person has really good luck, that does not make the thousands go away.
Just to make it clear, i am as struck by this issue as anyone else and definitely not dismissing the fact that something is off. What i discuss in my OP is a possible reason behind the bad drops. This is so, because being in a group of 5 and getting 1 drop per hour when they get 10, consistently isn’t really making much sense.
Do this experiment. Farm for 5 hours straight. Count your rare armor/weapon drops and putrid essences. Add them together. Does that seem like the number of rares you used to get pre Nov 15? Yes/No
Your comments shills my spine…
Maybe it is better for you to read the thread about the loot drop nerf. There you can read the opinion of many players.I doubt that more than 10% out of all those players has ever farmed for more than 30 min at a time.
Regardless of that, my analysis is for cursed shore alone.
Lol. 30 minutes huh? Regardless, your poorly thought out theory, if true, makes absolutely no sense from a programming perspective.
What i am talking about is what i believe is currently in place, not a proposal
This is not a thread to complain why you get low drops but for the reason behing it. Please, either discuss it or not post here. there are other threads for that
And the nerf drop rate of exotics? Same theory?
Also green and blue drops were nerfed. What is the theory behind it?I haven’t got a random exotic drop in nearly a month, if not longer and that also includes from doing fotm 10 daily too. Drop rates seem lower in general.
Have you even read the thread? Ofcourse the drops are lower but that is definitely not the point of the discussion.
(edited by Ath.2531)
While legendary should be hard to acquire, don’t get me wrong they should, in fact if they made them too easy I would quit the game now this second if they did after slaving my butt getting the rest of the items without playing the market.
But heres the problem, the games purpose is to make everyone feel equal, no forced healers or tanks.
However with the lodestones there is a serious unfairness.
100 molten lodestones for players who use a hammer, 75 gold.
100 charged lodestones for players who use a greatsword, 400 gold.If your casual player and don’t believe in playing the market, (which I think itself is ruining the spirit of the game.) then your gonna have to spent so many more hours on getting gold than other players.
Its just unfair, simple as that.
And that isn’t even mentioning the fact that certain heavy bags drop lodestones, except charged lodestones!!!
Power Traders will try to counter your argument with “Supply and demand” and casuals with “legendaries are supposed to be hard to get”
The worst ones of all are the power traders who have absolutely no DR in their earnings, they are controlling the precursor market and have recently started playing the legendary market.
I could go as far as saying that they are in fact indirectly helping Anet make more money by directing people to the gem store for gold but hey, you didn’t hear this from me.
Your comments shills my spine…

And the nerf drop rate of exotics? Same theory?
Also green and blue drops were nerfed. What is the theory behind it?
I doubt there is a change in exotic/blue/green/drop rates. from my farming sessions i get a bunch of blue/greens and around 1-2 exotics a week
I will make this as short as possible. It is very important to not merge this so that both players and devs can read it. If you feel that i am totally wrong, feel free to delete this thread to oblivion. But please, read it once.
Hypothesis: Drop rates for rare items have been NOT been nerfed but a theory of mine is that another item in the rare loot tables is skewing armor/weapon drop rates in small sessions.
Preface: The rare loot tables are different for each zone. I will be talking about the ones in Orr, especially cursed shore
The problem: Fewer rare drops.
Analysis: Wrong. You get the same rare drops as you always have. Rare is something colored yellow. Not only armor and weapons are colored yellow. There is a material called :Pile of putrid essence. this is also of rare quality and as far i have noticed from hundreds of hours of farming in cursed shore, it has similar drop chances as rares do.
What i have also observed is that if i add up the number of rare mats(such as putrid essence)+weapons/armor i get the percentage of rare drops i would expect pre nov 15.
A theory: Loot tables are dynamically adjusted per day and per character.
Analysis: If each day the loot tables are adjusted, then your luck is predefined for the whole day. This explains the lucky/unlucky for a whole day phenomenon. A lucky day would be defined by a reduction of the drop rate% of yellow mats from each person’s loot table. An unlucky day would mean the exact opposite.
An assumption: Since Nov 15, the loot tables have only changed in the sense of the % of yellow mat drop rates within them.
Analysis: Your rare drop percentages are the same. Add together all yellow mats and your rare weapon/armor drops and notice it is probabilistically concise to pre Nov 15. How do i know? I dont. This is an observation of over 200 hours farming the same area.
A recommendation(for ANet): Reduce the number of rare materials such as Pile of putrid essence from the rare gear loot tables.
Reasoning: You have told us that you havent observed anything odd with your data. That makes sense. By the law of Large Numbers(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_large_numbers) you are bound to observe no changes by doing analysis on large sample sizes. The analysis is to be done for small farming sessions
A recommendation(for players): Farm in cursed shore, add the number of your rare materials(yellow) such as pile of putrid essense and the number of your rare weapon/armor drops and provide some info on whether my theory stands or not.
Reasoning: Proof by contradiction:(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_by_contradiction)
TLDR: None. If you don’t read the whole thing you will likely have no idea what the intent of this thread is.
Just like this one: https://d2vn94glaxzkz3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/commerce-infographic-EN.png
Since its been 4 months since release date i was wondering how numbers have changed over the course of time. Could we have another info-graphic
Super hardcore players probably already have theirs OR are close to getting it done…then what ?
The game is pretty much over for them. Until new content gets released and then they’ll log off again.
But for the 95% of other players who are between casual and hardcore, this will take much longer AND it was intended for us, so ignore the “crazy hardcores” who dedicated hundreds of hours to their legendary. Getting the coolest weapon in the game through sleep deprivation and/or old exploits isn’t rewarding.“Crazy hardcore” person here, guess what I did after I got my legendary?
.
.
.
Started the next one.Guess what I’ll do afterwards?
salvage them and make a video on youtube?
To the poeple who can make 3 gold an hour. How do you make 3g an hour?
Run fractals over and over and sell everything.
Negative. Farm Cursed shore over and over and sell everything. Still a grind but at least you don’t have to spend extra time finding a good group.
Does nothing for me but waste a slot for better stats. The developers are responsible for magic find and its choice to be implemented and the failed game mechanic that encourages bots and farmers/gold sellers.
Wrong. MF doesn’t encourage bots and gold farmers. People who give them money do.
Its the Gem store prices that encourage people to turn to 3rd party websites. When 100g costs roughly $100 what do you expect people with limited time to do? Grind? Noooopes! They would rather risk it and get 100g with $20 instead. If the Gem store prices were more realistic more people would go there instead.
Absurd Gem store Prices →People use 3rd party sites→More people get Hacked→People get better prices from 3rd Party websites because more people got hacked.
And the vicious cycle continues. Why? Because people don’t like Gem store prices.
I would be curious to see a quarterly update similar to this
https://d2vn94glaxzkz3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/commerce-infographic-EN.png
One can hope, right?
