I understand that most companies do what Anet is doing to attract new business and it worked for my purchasing HoT for my son. Most companies will almost always offer an incentive to maintain is current business. After reading later posts I see that we get an extended char slot-while this does nothing for me it was an offer.
I’m sure this has been mentioned over the 121pages or in another posting but will this expansion eventually force the core players to switch over and pay anyway or is this a stand alone expansion-as you said the core being a bonus
I appreciate your replies btw, Ayril
There’s currently a debate as to whether future living story seasons will require the expansion. We haven’t gotten anything from Anet regarding whether this is true or not. However, Anet has stated several times that those who do not purchase the expansion will still be able to play the core game.
Is there any evidence, whatsoever, that these achievements will be applied to your existing account rather than only the beta account despite Anet having stated several times that progression on beta characters will not be saved?

The price is not being bumped up for veteran players. You’ll start off exactly in the same position as a new player would.
I have to pay another $49 on top of the original $59 I originally paid.
Where do you not see this as a bump in price and how does $49 more put me in the same position as a new player?…Seems I’m down $49 more which isn’t exactly the sameI’m not saying I should get veteran treatment…Hell, I’m a military veteran and don’t get that at most places. All I’m saying is there should be an extended offer for those who have support Anet over the years. I got $50 credit and 6months HBO from Dish for being a loyal customer and asking if there were any new offers…I’m not complaining as much as I am asking…
What you originally paid does not matter. It has zero impact on the price of the expansion. The core game being a free bonus when applied to a new account has no impact on the price of the expansion. It’s not a requirement to extend bonuses to existing customers. What Anet is doing is what many companies do to attract new customers.
Oh. And just to clarify what I meant about being in the same position as a new player. If you buy the expansion but apply it to a new account, you’ll be in the same position as a new player.

I am curious though. If people had actually read what they were agreeing to instead of blindly choosing ‘Agree’, would this even been an issue?
And one more question. Why does this bother the people who didn’t read the EULA in the first place? They obviously didn’t care enough about what it contained the first time they agreed to it.
Like I posted in the other thread. If you don’t like a certain stat combo, form a group forbidding it.
I found a solution to the “issue” which is in the image attached that I saw on reddit.
People have been doing this since last December and I’m pretty sure a large percentage of the $10 purchases during those weekends was to existing players.
I found this article on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3ickp9/new_beta_achievements/) that states there will be AP for the beta weekend. Now my concern is that will these points add onto your account or will they just be in the beta and become useless afterwards.
I am an avid AP chaser and i would like to know if this is the case since I haven’t bought the expansion yet. Anyone have any idea??
What would be the point of them if they didn’t go towards your main account? that would be a massive waste of time imo.
I suspect they are an incentive to get people to test specific content. Think of them as early unlocked HoT achievements.
How many of the previous living story achievements been broken in some way at some point in time? This could be a means to test various ways they could do achievements to make sure they work correctly.
Possibly, but unlikely. The first problem with that is that you trivialize the achievements and remove incentives to fix things by adding them early. If there is a really hard achievement that someone finds a loophole to in the beta they will use the loophole and keep it to themselves so they can profit off of it once it goes live.
Secondly there would be no reason to call them beta weekend achievements if they were actual HoT achievements that didn’t transfer, they’d just call them whatever they were going to call them.
Much more likely than awarding players AP to their main accounts.
They have achievements that are progressed through various methods. They then test this in the HoT environment with players. These achievements may or may not appear in the final version as they could just be placeholders or those specrically designed for the beta itself.

Likely beta only to track the progress of achievements.
Hope Anet will clarify if they will carry over to non beta characters
They don’t need to specifically as they’ve stated several times that all progress made on beta characters are not saved. Beta characters only use a copy of your account at soecfic time.

@Heylel:
I’m just making a correction to that quote you posted. Living Story Season 2 started in July 2014, not November 2014. Whoever wrote that must’ve forgotten about Drytop.
Ok I understand everyone must be working on HoT, but also I dont understand
why havent they brough back a past event like SAB or Bazaar of the Four Winds (again), Queen’s Jubilee, Clockwork Chaos, Tower of Nightmares, Escape from Lion’s Arch
SAB – They’ve stated that they will not be able to do this because the physics engine changed from when it was last released and they can’t spare the people to work on it.
Bazaar of Four Winds – Go to Drytop and you’ll see why this will not happen anytime soon.
Queen’s Jubilee – Always a possibility.
Clockwork Chaos – Living Story Season 1. So no. Scarlet is also dead.
Tower of Nightmares – Living Story Season 1. So no. It also kind of blew up….
Escape from Lion’s Arch – Living Story Season 1. LA was recently rebuilt. Scarlet is also dead.
My point is they have already coded these into the game once and could have a thing where we can play them again while we wait for HoT like they did with Bazaar of the Four Winds in the past, and it wouldnt take much time either. There has been nothing exciting or any amazing skins released for months and its really boring making me not want to play. I just dont see why they cant add some of the old skins back because I think a lot of people play this game for cosmetics and skins along with the other reasons plus a event where we can enjoy and save up gold and skins while we wait for HoT would make it easier for new people to get geared up before HoT, I think we would enjoy HoT more if we had some of the old skins to make our characters look cool to add onto our character on top of the new cool stuff from HoT, because the cool skins on trading post are 500-2000g and its hard to save up that much espically a PvPer like myself. I hope they add some of the old skins back and maby an event so we have something to do while we wait for HoT. Thank you
So the point of your post is less about having content to replay between now and HoT but a disguised thread about getting previous, exclusive skins?

does HoT include Season 2 of the story quests from the core game?
No. Those are still separate.
It increases demand, and thus sales, of the items. That’s why they do it.

I understand the game is free for the new players and the price they ask is the price they’re charging for the expansion alone…
I’ll be honest, giving the new players the core game for free is a nice way to encourage them getting the game. If nothing, it’s better than another company’s policy where you needed to buy all the expansions and the core game PLUS paying the monthly fee.
But as an old player, I don’t feel any reason to come back by this point, as an old player I don’t see why I should get this one, then wait for another expansion and pay for it once again while ‘new players’ will get the Core+HoT+whatever the new expansion will be. GW is interesting, but by this point I’ll just wait for the final expansion, pick that up and experience the whole thing myself…
If all you care about is the story then that could be one way to go. However, a lot of the maps are structured in a way like DT and SW. When you eventually go to play HoT’s maps, you won’t get the full experience as there will be much less people. You’ll also find yourself grinding much more than everyone else for the map currencies to get any items from those vendors including completing any collections.
I did not play in the beta so I am curious about the, “a lot of the maps’” comment. How many maps are you speaking of? How many total are there and how many of those are structured like Dry Top and Silverwastes?
Also what are the map currencies?
I’m talking about all maps from HoT and beyond. Anet has stated that their current plan is to make maps like DT and SW. Each of those maps have a currency and if you played the beta, you would have seen a new one.

Maybe the bunny ears will make a surprise appearance…
Just move the buy window so that the confirm button overlaps the item you’re trying to acquire.
It would require pulling people off from working on the expansion so very unlikely. I’d rather have the expansion release this year than have it set back because of a single event.

The first thing you did was compare fallout and gw2 ~~ Even if you to some extent did so to show that it cannot be compared, you still did so. I understand what you’re saying, however you still compared a game regardless of the intention of doing so.
Furthermore, the standard idea of price to content is a notion that has arrived after a multitude of games and expansions over the years have been released for a set price. Had the standard price for new games been 10$ and HoT been selling for 50$ I highly doubt that you would think it was a fair price. My point is that it is closely related, now that you don’t agree with that, is ok. However I really don’t think you would buy HoT right away if it was 5 times the price of the original game if GW2 had been 10$ and all other subsequent and previous games since 1995 had been between 5-10$.
Either way, this is going nowhere, if I have the willpower I’m done in this thread =)
Again, read my post that you quoted. All of those comparisons have been examples to show flaws in using them.
The prices you have set for games and has been standard for quite some time have nothing to do with the amount of content in them. Very old console games, think back to SNES, sold for $50. How much content were contained in those games compared to now. The prices have rose to a standard of $60 and yet we get a much much more content. This is one of the reasons that you cannot relate price to content. All you can do is examine the content of a particular game, determine it’s value to you, and then whether you personally feel that it’s worth paying the stated price for.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ayrilana.1396
It always matters ~~ if there wasn’t competition with games the prices would be like 500 dollars for any given game. It’s not just (can the consumer afford it) that decides the price. They also compare the prices to other games. And of course what games the same publisher made previously for given prices matters. It’s a matter of brand and consumer trust. It’s completely normal that people compare to know if they are getting tricked or if they can get it cheaper elsewhere. Airplanes are rated, airports are rated, racehorses have ratings, going into 2 supermarkets to know who sells the milk the cheapest is normal. To say that whatever content other games(especially those from the same company) doesn’t matter… That doesn’t make sense, so you want to buy milk for 10$ instead of 1$, because you don’t believe in comparing the quality to the price?
Um… we’re talking about content in relation to price. Nothing you just said had anything to do with that.
Do you really think the amount content that you get when buying both Mortal Kombat X and Skyrim on the console is the same? How about Skyrim versus any of the Final Fantasy console games? How about Guild Wars Prophecies to Diablo III. How about GW2 compared to the WoW?
Expansions. With how much people spent on any of the WoW expansions, did the additional content they receive fall in line with the ratio of content and price they received from the core game? To clarify, If they paid $60 for the original game, and purchased an expansion for $30, did they receive 50% of the content of the original with the expansion?
Guild Wars EotN expansion sold for $40 when it was released. I believe that I had paid $60 for Prophecies. Since $40/$60 is two thirds, did you receive two thirds of the content of Prophecies when you purchased EotN? Prophecies had 58 explorable areas while EotN had 25. That’s only 43% right there so it’s a fail but people still praise it. You can go on and on with comparing the skills and anything else. The point being that you never get as much content from expansions as the core games in regards to their content-to-price ratios.
All you can really judge reliably is the content with whatever you’re thinking about purchasing and whether that content’s value to you is worth the cost. If it’s not then you simply do not buy it.
And it is you who keeps comparing the games, I commented on someone else comparing games, then you nitpicked it.
I’m not comparing games. The fact that you think that I do shows you either didn’t read everything that I had said and/or you didn’t understand it. What I had provided were examples to show the flaws in comparing games in regard to the relationship between content and price.

Nope. You’re making the mistake of trying to compare the price of one thing in relation to its content to another. I bought Fallout 3 and GW2 both for $60. GW2 obviously had much more content. By your rationale I was ripped off when I bought Fallout 3 since GW2 is the measure of what an acceptable amount of content is worth at $60. You decide a content’s worth based in the value you get from it and whether said value is worth the cost to you.
Hahaha, no no not at all, you’re clearly both misunderstanding me, and not reading my posts properly.
Fallout 3 full game 60, GW2 full game 60, EoTN 35 expansion, HoT 50 expansion.
I’m talking about full games compared to expansions, and that games from the same developer, can be compared to some extent despite those differences. You’re drawing assumptions friend =)
You’re not understanding the part where I said comparing content to other content distorts the results. You look at the content contained in HoT and decide whether the value of what’s there is worth the price. What MMO X, Y, or Z had doesn’t matter. What expansion X, Y, or Z had doesn’t matter. What game X, Y, or Z had doesn’t matter.

It clearly kittening matters, games are developed and content created on what type of genre they are aiming for
Fallout 3 is more a kin to Skyrim. It’s a singleplayer RPG.
You are not interacting with online players, you have no need as a game dev to create a world to hold xxx,xxx amount of players, you only need to create content for 1 player.
Can you understand that? lots of online players in an online revolving, changing world means you need to create a lot of content….compared to a single player RPG in one world, static world … gee I wonder which one will have more content?
It doesn’t. Content in one is content in another. You paid the same price for both. You can argue game genre’s but in the end you paid X amount of content for Y dollars.

They just weren’t as “huge” as he’s claiming. Yes, they were multi-leveled, but most levels were sort of small. Like GW2 dungeons, their varied in size.
I know the count. The point being that quite a lot of the dungeons were just copy and pasted from others. Look at the Slaver’s Exile maps and tell me you don’t see the same maps in the other dungeons. The entire map for Freezie was reused from another dungeon.
I’m aware, but that doesn’t make them “not a dungeon” though. No one claimed they were “unique” dungeons.
So if the expansion contains 6 unique maps but 15 total, you’d be okay with that?

I think the point of this discussion has derailed. Which is… the problem of having to pay for the game twice to get an expansion.
I understand that it’s great for newer players, it’s a 2 for 1 deal. GW2 provides HOURS of content, and is in no way a lightweight when it comes to entertainment. But for older players, it’s like a stab in the back for loyalty. You’ve likely completed most of what GW2 had to offer you, so you’re really paying the price of a game… for one item.
You don’t have to lower the price… but at least give the older players something special too.
You only pay once for the core game.
You base the value of the expansion on how much content is included and whether you feel it is worth that much. If you personally don’t feel that it is then simply don’t buy it. Comparing it to what you got in other games, whether related or not, just distorts things.
Companies often give offers targeted at new customers only. It’s a fairly common thing to do. Providing purchase incentives to the entire customer base is not a requirement. That’s not how it works.

I keep reading these threads and trying to fathom why people keep threatening to hold their breath until their face turns blue to make Anet give them an ice cream cone.
I guess I should make a similar demand… something like… “Give me source code to the game and server side software or I won’t preorder HoT.” Oh, wait! I already pre-ordered. Darn it! I guess I’m just out of luck. Time to take a breath again.
Since I pay more in internet access fees every month than I’ve ever spent in buying and playing this game, the price of HoT is trivial IMO. I do not understand the OP’s demand to know everything up front. That’s like asking for the last chapter in a who-done-it novel before the book is released.
It’s that their information has been misleading Jimson. Colin and Mike announced new legendaries in January. Were you thinking that meant backpieces? No one was but that is what we are getting. They announced multilevel maps. Now they are backtracking and saying that not every map is multi-level. I’d agree with your food analogy, but I am asking for basic info. How many maps? I’m not asking for story beats and scripts for how the Mordremoth fight goes down.
Because the final fight is happening at the end of this x-pac, right? Or nah?
It hasn’t been misleading. Did they say all maps would be multi-level? Did they say all new legendary weapons would be available? They were/are not backtracking. It’s people reading too far into what they’re saying, making speculation or assumptions, and then treating it as fact only to be disappointed later on when they are wrong.
I disagree. It is misleading. There aren’t any legendary backpieces in the game. So in January when they announced there would be new legendaries, exactly zero people were thinking they would be backpieces. Heck, if you want to get technical, they did say a few years ago that legendary trinkets were coming. How’s that coming along?
So it is misleading because when they announced it the flipping corner of the internet that die-hard GW2 fans like myself reside in all did a collective backflip and dragon emote at the same time because we thought we were finally getting new legendary weapons after years of waiting.
This is about legendary weapons, not the backpack. The backpack was a surprise to everyone and has nothing to do with my argument.
You will get new legendaries over time. They never stated that every single one would be available at HoT release. If I’m wrong, please link me the source.

Likely within the next few weeks people will.
Maybe they can give it a periodic shimmer on the mini map similar to what you see when you hover the cursor over the icon on the full map.
People came on the forums everyday posting about how the game needs an expansion. Posting about how they are quiting because there is no expansion. How the game is horrible without an expansion. This is what happens when games get expansions, there is a large gap between releases. LS3 + two week updates will most likely pick up once the expansion is released, but there may even be a gap between those. If we would have went without an expansion they could have released all of “stuff” in an expansion just in two week intervals. Rather then developing and testing large additions to the game they moderately add in small new features. I do not understand why people could not see that you will get all of the same stuff as an expansion it just happens slowly rather than all at once.
This is why I was against the expansion method, but a large portion of the forum base was for it. So now we wait months for this to come out, we could have already been on LS3 with parts of VB and some specializations released. Just take a break from the game and come back when the expansion comes out.
I’m pretty sure they didn’t expect it would take that long to get an expansion and that Anet would allocate all their people to it (except for the gemstore team), bringing no further content for nearly one year.
They were warned repeatedly that there would be a large gap of up to two years for content. They didn’t care.
Just found Dulfy’s page on these new items:
http://dulfy.net/2015/08/18/gw2-account-bump-account-jump-start-in-gemstore/
So apparently you can only buy these things once per account.
Well, that’s somewhat of a relief knowing that people can’t be duped if they try to buy it the second time around (where purchasing items individually would be cheaper).
I’m just confused why the “crossed out” value is even there though- they could’ve at least made the figure lower and closer to the actual value rather than some obscure inflated one. Perhaps these new Account-bound Unidentified Dyes will solve our mystery, and turn out to be ludicrously expensive on the gem-store.
Inflated?
I think you misunderstood me.
The “original price” (the one that is crossed out beneath the current “discount” price) for these items stand at 1,970 gems for the Account Bump and 3,620 gems for the Account Jump Start.
These figures are more expensive than if you bought the contents individually.
The bump is worth 1,854 (rounded) gems and the jump start is worth 3,446 (rounded) gems. While there is a small difference between actual and what they listed, it’s not substantial enough to be an issue.
Ah yes, I just realised I made another calculation error on the larger of the two packs. Re-added and now realised that my figure should be 3,450 (not 3,030 or whatever it was).
I will edit the post accordingly and quickly check everything else to make sure there aren’t more
There is still a discrepancy- it is smaller than I had first calculated. Like I had said previously though, I would expect that the difference in price will be made up when Account-bound Unidentified Dyes are purchasable on the gem-store.
Yeah. I thought I had seen them there or maybe it was just a screenshot. Whatever they do price them at, it may still be cheaper to convert the gems to gold instead and buy the colors you want off the TP.
Unless this sale on the packages is very short, I would personally wait until next week and see if they do any anniversary sales. You may get the same discount on each item, as you would have if you had purchased the packages, but not be forced to buy items that you wouldn’t necessarily want.

The price is not being bumped up for veteran players. Companies offering discounts to new customers is common practice. Veteran players are not entitled to special discounts/bonuses. It’s not a requirement but many people think it is because they got used to it when companies started doing that for pre-orders and now they expect it.
If people want the same offer as the new players then apply the expansion key to a new account. You’ll start off exactly in the same position as a new player would.

Conditions are viable….. Crit damage is just better. As for why. Because they want to release the logical combinations last, so we’re more likely to grind the other slightly better on paper stats, only to replace them later.
That made no sense at all.
It doesn’t make sense because you’re treating viable and optimal synonymously.
Boosters last 2 hours. Bag slots are forever.
But both lose their value (according to some people) when going to another character that they were not applied on as they’re not account bound. If you bought a bag slot for 600 gems and 600 gems worth of boosters, would they have the same value when all applied to a single character but then you then start a new one to act as your main?
Cost wise they are the same but the bag slot expansion has more value as it’s permanent. However people are saying the boosters are a good value for new players whereas the bag slot expansion are not based on the new player potentially changing their main at some point in the future.
Basically anything that can only be used my one character is a bad value for new players (and veterans if you want to go that far).
I don’t think any of us are saying that it’s bad to have bag slots in the package. Just that if it’s apparently aimed at new players, then there are things we feel would have been better for new players than a bag slot. Such as a character slot. So that they could try out a 6th class without having to delete a character.
I personally don’t see how a character slot would be better for a new account which already has five empty slots. Yes, they can have a sixth class to try out but what’s the likelihood of them playing six classes consecutively? For a new player, you’d think that trying to play 6 classes at once would be a little overwhelming.
It won’t include guild missions.
Option 3 is fine. When you scroll the mouse wheel in either direction, there’s a click. As long as only one action is performed per click then there’s no problem.

The bag slot expansions are fine to be included in the package. They come as an account bound consumable that can then be applied towards a single character’s existing bag slot total. The fact that they can be applied towards a single character is not unknown and I believe the tooltip even states so.
I see people complaining that it’s not a great item because it can only be applied to one character. How’s this any different from other consumables that are soulbound such as boosters? Are those a bad deal then too? The player benefits from having that character containing more bag slots. If they change to another character then that their choice. It doesn’t diminish the existing value of the bag slots.
I think the problem with it is that’s an expensive, permanent upgrade to one, single character. A booster is not a permanent fixture and they are also relatively cheap.
No, personally I wouldn’t expect A-net to change the item to unlock another bag slot on every current and future character. However, I would expect the item to be “withdrawable” or “refundable” so that if you wanted to, you could remove it and apply it to a different character. This means that players have more freedom to play what they want- something I’ve always thought that A-net placed highly.
Moreover, other expensive items can be used elsewhere- 20 slot bags, legendaries, ascended gear, infinite tools and salvage… it means that if you wanted to, you do have the possibility of swapping mains without losing out on anything you’ve spent a large amount of money on.
So that is one of the reasons why I jump to the conclusion that these items aren’t a great choice for new, indecisive players.
I never said it was bad value for money (at discount price) if you have a use for the most expensive items from the packs. It is bad value for money if a player jumps into buying it because they think it’s the most helpful thing they can get from the gemstore currently. It is also terrible value for money if you repurchase either one of them at full price.
Why would it matter if it’s permanent or not or that they’re relatively cheap. We’re speaking in the context of the packages so I was referring to the boosters that you would get. If you used them all in a single character and then re-rolled, your value was lost just as much as it would have be if you applied the bag slot expansions to that character.
Having the extra bag slots being able to be moved between characters defeats the purpose of them being soulbound (obviously) as well as account bound. If they were to go that route then they may as well just apply it towards every character on the account. The thing is that these extra slots are convenience items and not required at all.
This is likely something we won’t ever agree on. I see it as a good value for a player who is starting out. It helps them get started in the game, and unlike boosters, are permanent unless you delete the character. If they start a new character, the slot on the old character is still there and many people play multiple characters rather than just one.

The packages are aimed at new players primarily given the items included. New players are probably more likely to reroll and lose the bag slot than a veteran is.
How that any different from using boosters on a new character and then re-rolling?

What I’m thinking is that this is aimed at not only new players but players who have ordered Ultimate HoT edition. The one that comes with 4000 gems. I wouldn’t say its a coincident that they release these right before anniversary sales, or maybe it is just me. Get people to spend part of the 4000 gems, then the anniversary sales start and people start buying more gems.
If not the above, then I suppose it is actually aimed towards new players but there could be better. Black Lion Keys as fun as they are to open, it would be more beneficial if they got something that’ll last. Perhaps a Copper-Fed Salvage-o-matic, and throw in a 2 week golem banker as well. or one that lasts a month or something along those lines.
I absolutely agree, Mizu- the contents is aimed at a general audience, but is masquerading as something that is beneficial and very worthwhile to new players. I mean, from the perspective of a newbie, “Why would they sell a starter pack if the contents aren’t hugely beneficial?” :P
My main concern is that new or uninformed players will purchase this and regret it, and then may even avoid purchasing things in the future.
The 4,000 gem ultimate edition and timing regarding the anniversary had also crossed my mind.
However, I feel that they could’ve also targeted both markets much better by offering things that are very useful to have from the start, but would be enticing for older/returning players to pick up for cheap.
Of course, I feel like I’d have less of a problem with the whole idea if the non-discounted price wasn’t more expensive than it should be.
It is a good deal. The bump gets you 10 XP boosters for 100 gems cheaper than you would have paid for them. Everything else is a bonus on top of that. The jump start gives you bag/bank slots at the price you would have paid separately but you also get all of those other items on top of it.
