I’ve been hit for 10k backstabs, and 11k Eviscerates with 2000 Toughness…

Its really not that rare… and its why I run Bunker Build, cause if i’m getting hit for that much with 2000 toughness, imagine if I had less

You might want to check your armor set. I run 2K toughness as a thief and a backstab only hits me for 4K.

I have 2,105 toughness/3440 armor and backstab hits me for 4,639 damage. I have 400 more armor than the OP, backstab’s damage was lowered by roughly 1.2k damage. That isn’t a big reduction considering: its a nearly instant attack, that you can’t counter play and that you can’t see coming.

Official state of skill lag and server optimizations

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aza.2105

Were there any optimizations for AMD CPUs?

Theoretically everyone should see an improvement.

Greetings Bill,

I haven’t noticed a improvement on my end, my fps still haven’t changed. What exactly were the changes done client side?

Update:

I did a bit more testing and I believe there has been a fairly large improvement in fps. I use to get 43fps at Cornucopian Fields way point outside LA while looking straight at the windmill. But now its a solid 60fps. Very big difference. Additionally, I’d like to know if there is any work being done to make reflections gpu intensive instead of cpu intensive?

It would be great if the engine optimizations were made less transparent. Also, my specs are in my signature.

[Warrior] Healing Signet Active Ideas

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

Yeah I meant the buff.

Warriors have no access to protection. They make up for it with higher health and better regens. That’s how it works.

OP wants to make Healing Signet’s active gives them protection, which doesn’t work with that design.

This is BS. How are you going to compare a boon that lasts at most 3 seconds with a long cd in pvp to a constant high health pool? Also to quote:

“Virtues have been said to help balance the guardian; for example, they have a lower base health than the warrior profession but compensate for this with their higher health regeneration granted by Virtue of Resolve.”

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guardian

Warrior has a higher health regen than guardian. The most hp compared to the lowest hp guardian has. Extreme mobility, immunities and condition cleanse.

Also do not forget, ranger has a better protection uptime than guardian does. So now that is clear……

Warrior true weakness

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

They have no weakness. The problem is – neither the Devs nor Warriors actually see or accept this and just think its a “L2P” issue. The sad thing is – it would take a few changes to make them more balanced.

1) Healing Signet: Reduce Passive by 30%, Increase the active by 50% and increase how much it heals with more Healing Power. So if they WANT insane Regen, they can have it – but it will cost a bit with needing more Healing Power

2) Mobility: Several options here. The “best” i think would be to make it like Ride The Lightening, if they hit someone the cool down is halved (20seconds) if not it is doubled (40seconds) Savage Leap needs to be a higher cool down as well.

3) Immunities: I think that Healing Signet Passive should be disabled when they use immunity skills (not blocks though) or make it so they can’t attack like the Engineer skill.

4) Hammer – The Burst needs its cool down increased having a 1-2second stun EVERY 10 seconds is simply to much Fierce Blow needs its damage reduced a bit and the weakness reduced by 50% and Hammer Shock needs the Cripple reduced by 50%

It’s ArmageddonAsh with another wave of terrible ideas.

1)HS was designed to offer good sustain to warriors WHO DON’T SPEC FOR HEALING POWER. Second of all if you NERF THE PASSIVE THAT MUCH AND BUFF THE ACTIVE IT’LL JUST BECOME ANOTHER HEALING SURGE / MENDING. Ergo useless.

2)Warriors are supposed to be mobile. Look at :
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Warrior
First thing it says is SPEED.

3)No other class works like that. What are you even saying.
4)Hammer was already severely nerfed. You want to take it out of the game completely ? at least ask for that.

All in all I hope you do realize how far off you are.

Warrior’s weakness is his inability to specialize and do as well as other classes in specific roles.

1. This makes no sense, HS is still the best heal even with healing power.

2. Yes they are suppose to be mobile. I.E they have skills that allow them to reach the target faster, no flee from them. Lets look at the descriptions of each gap closer:

Savage Leap: Lunge at your foe and strike them with your sword
Rush: Charge and strike your foe.
Bull’s Charge: Charge your foe and knock down fleeing foes.

None of those skills have anything to do with escaping a fight, but rushing into the fight to hit a target. However at this time they are used as a escape tools. They should require a target to use.

3. I agree, his suggestion makes no sense.

4. Again I agree, hammer is fine. The animation is so clear that its quite easy to avoid the attacks. There doesn’t need to be any change. Armageddon doesn’t understand that hammer is a CC weapon.

I feel transformations are the worst implemented skills in the game. You lose all utility skills in exchange for stat increases and new skills. If I had to guess, these type of abilities are the least used and liked out of all the skill types.

My suggestion is tone down the power of transformation skills, i.e make the skills on par with what would be seen on normal weapon sets. Get rid of the stat boosts, allow access to utility skills and increase the duration of the transformation. This would make them more like a additional weapon set instead of being totally disconnected from the normal class mechanics.

I feel this would open up additional depth for each class and make transformation skills competitive skill choices.

Skyhammer...why?

in PvP

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

Only engineers, thieves and necromancers love skyhammer. The map is notoriously class biased. Who ever has the most knockbacks and stealth pulls wins. I added necromancer to the list simply because fighting them in the extremely small area were the hammer is located is a absolute nightmare. Their marks and other skills literally take up 90% of the entire area. Its like battling inside of a shoe box.

Perhaps Anet is arrogant and just refuses to remove the map because of the time spent creating it. I personally do not feel that it belongs in the game, it feels like something geared towards a first person shooter.

[WvW] Thief BS High Armor Squishy Targets

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

I would +1 your post, Hostility, except you’re clearly still playing “those other MMOs,” where passive mitigation is a thing and you can AFK while facetanking.

Meanwhile, in GW2, the name of the game is active mitigation – as you mentioned already with blocks and evades. In WvW, going full bunker isn’t going to save a player. What will save a player is a good ratio of Effective Power/Health and active mitigation through mechanics and abilities.

Very well, so how do you actively mitigate attacks you do not see coming? Which do not punish the thief if you out play them? Let me show you in a brief summary:

1. You can only guess where the thief is and when and if they will backstab, so you can prematurely use defensive cooldowns such as blind, aegis, block and dodge.

2. Here is the kicker, even if you make the right guess and out play the thief by using one of the defensive cooldowns I named and they miss their attacks. They will still continue to spam attacks to they eventually land one.

There is no punishment for thieves when they fail attacks in stealth. But their is punishment for players who prematurely use defensive cds when they guess wrong. This highlights another problem, fighting against a invisible character is a guessing game but for them its even easier to fight their target since they can observe the target without fear of the target reading what they may do.

That entire scenario completely nullifies the idea of active mitigation because one party can’t observe to make the active plays. It becomes more like guessing plays.

[WvW] Thief BS High Armor Squishy Targets

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

Lets stop with this BS “If they hit hard, they get hit hard as well” ok?!

This is a normal thief scenario:

stealth (damage increased) => 3k to 6k dmg=> stealth (heal and/or condition remove) =>3k dmg => stealth

Most of times u cant even target a thief before getting dropped to 1/4 hp.

Lets be clear i dont mind if thieves can unleash tons of dmg (even on a full bunker warrior, thing that makes me laugh hard) to compensate their squishyness…but the STEALTH mechanics in this game are just BS,and this is a fact.

What you outlined here is what most players and perhaps even developers seem to ignore. Stealth negates the entire idea of being squishy. A zerker thief is squishy IF they aren’t using stealth. But every class that uses zerker is rather squishy. So this isn’t entirely unique to the thief class.

The example scenario is spot on. You can’t even down a thief before they simply stealth again and return with replenished health. Unless you can dish out 10k+ within 4 seconds and land all of the attacks, then its impossible.

This also highlights another issue, there is no counter play for stealth outside of the ranger skill sic em. So every time they stealth the player is punished for not being able to counter it. However the thief is not punished for failed attacks in stealth, they just keep attacking until something hits.

To be honest I’m not sure what Anet’s perspective is. Four seconds for the reveal buff is such a tiny interval to deliver damage that it doesn’t even matter. The only time it can make a difference is if the thief is fighting against multiple enemies. But in a 1v1 encounter they always have a advantage.

Unfortunately even though you have a valid opinion about both skills, Anet will push those changes through anyway. The result will be the same situation we have now: No one will use healing breeze or litany of wrath.

Elementalist health/armor design philosophy?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

What was the design philosophy with Elementalist health+armor, especially in PvE where mobs deal flat damage?

My guess is that its because they can swap through four different weapon sets (attunements) compared to just two weapon sets for the other seven classes. Each attunement functions as a different type of weapon: dps, support, defensive, condition damage etc.

-snip

No, no, no, no, no, no!
You really don’t have a thorough understanding of game mechanics and spvp. Many of the thief related problems that I see on the wvw forums are linked to different builds entirely and are often caused by damage scaling and many wvw’ers having no idea how to counter thieves. These very same people will get trashed by a lot of other builds that require some knowledge in order to counter them, but thief has flashy numbers and evades and that kittens people off more than a condi build that has high toughness.

1. stealth has plenty of counters, but they are all not focused on countering ‘stealth’ but what the person is doing in stealth. Stealth itself is a mechanic/game rule.
2. The evade mechanic is supposed to be a counter, but again, what are you talking about here… evade through dodge roll, evade on pw, or the mechanic itself? Since then you could argue that a well timed blind or block don’t have a counter either… evade itself is a mechanic/game rule.
3. True, I suppose that makes thief a hardcounter vs your chill build…

1. Stealth only has one counter, sic em.

2. Block has unblockable skills to counter balance it. Dodge has endurance and weakness. Evade has nothing. The problem with evade is that its the exact same mechanic as dodge, but folded in with offensive and defensive skills. Avoiding damage entirely while being able to do dps is quite powerful.

I feel Blurred frenzy for example is balanced, it has a relatively long cd and they can’t move. Once they use it you can expect when it will be off cd again. The thief class does not have this issue, they can freely use evades on weapon skills as long as they have initiative. Ranger with sword and dagger is similar since evade is present on 3/5 of their weapon skill bar with low cooldowns. Between dodge (vigor) and evade this gives a enormous amount of mitigation. Probably more than a class with high toughness.

Make chill affect initiative regen and its all good.

Jon Sharp already talked about this. Decreasing initiative regen by 66% would be too hard a hit for thieves, WHO ARE ALREADY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIT OF BALANCE — YES THAT’S RIGHT — so making chill affect initiative would be detrimental to the thief as it already is. See to the signature before calling for nerfs again. You’re a guardian, so I don’t even see how you can argue chilled at all. It’s not like Glacial Heart is decent in any way.

Yes I so happen to play a guardian, but I do not think I am the class. Neither will I defend it like its a extension of myself.

Thieves are not the class that is the least balance, in fact if you journey to the wvw forums its one of the classes people complain about the most. Why is this? How do they go from last to near the top? The conquest mode is only a facade to hide severe balance issues with the game. Without many problems begin to show up. The moment Anet decides to add a deathmatch mode is the moment spvp inherits many problems found in wvw.

The thief class has many exceptions to the game rules that makes it appear a cheesy class:

1. Stealth has no counter
2. The evade mechanic has no counter
3. The class isn’t effected by chill like the 7 other classes

These exceptions only cause imbalance, another similar situation is with warrior healing signet. Anet gave them a high regen that is uninterruptable. While other classes heals can be stopped. As you see the only thing this has caused is people to complain about it.

If they focused their efforts in balancing classes around mechanics that have counters instead of giving them exceptions to the rules then I’m sure more viable builds would exist for them.

I believe the problem is that Anet has spoiled players with bad boss fights which only require them to stand in one place, auto attack and occasionally dodge. Most dungeon bosses are this way and most open world bosses are this way. What do players do at maw? Stand and auto attack. What do players do at shat? Stand and auto attack. What do players do at karka? Stand and auto attack and maybe dodge when it stomps and rolls.

Now they introduce a fight that requires players to use more than one button and requires movement. Skills that most players failed to develop because of earlier game mechanics.

I do not know how many times I watched players fail to kite the spinning champion into mines. How many failed the 4th champ because they stood in aoe. The element of utilizing skills and tactics are devoid in most players due to the reasons I named. Its unfortunate, I don’t necessarily blame them. But the boss mechanics in game before this event.

Overall I feel marionette is a good start to solving the mindless stacking, standing still and auto attacking mentality.

Why Healing Signet is superior to other heals

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

‘Why healing signet is over powered’-

Because the passive always delivers the highest health per second (hps) of any healing skill. Always.

You forgot one very important factor, it has the hps of any healing skill without having to use healing power. This has always been the biggest issue to me. Every other class has to invest in relatively high healing power to scale their heals. Warrior does not need to with healing signet.

It gives high returns no matter what gear you wear. A guardian with high healing power still can not have greater healing over time than a warrior in zerker gear. I feel if healing signet had to use lots of healing power to reach it current numbers, no one would complain. As there would be a trade off to obtain great sustain. Currently there is no trade off other than choosing to select healing signet over other heals.

[Warriors] best landspeed, no balance

The skills warrior uses for mobility are suppose to be used for gap closers not escape mechanisms. Its probably a oversight by Anet, because if its not then they would be hypocritical to had nerfed elementalist for the same reason.

Rush, Bull’s charge and Savage leap should all require targets to use.

Why? You can blink away or blink in.. It works the same for savage leap/rush etc.. Not talking about rtl here. But every class has a way to get out or get in.. Is it with blink or shadowstep or other teleport skills or even stealth or other classes also have leap..

If you on use sword i dont see any problem.

If you only use gs i dont see any problem

if you use them both i do see a problem.. Now you suck and are made to run away

I don’t feel its the same. When you look at the soldier archetype like warrior and guardian, what you see are classes designed to be at the frontline of battles. The heavy armor, high health, blocks, immunities and durability compared to less durable classes like elementalist.

It makes more sense for elementalist to have escape mechanisms because in comparison they are very squishy and they can not fight as well in the front line as a warrior can. Escape mechanisms are meant for retreating or trying to return to the classes natural element. If warrior is suppose to be a frontline class why would they have skills that move them out of their element?

The skills I named are suppose to help them stay put in their natural element (melee range) not escape it. Guardian plays the same way, they have teleports that get them into the comfort zone but once they are there they are expected to fight it out.

[Merged][PvP][Warrior] Healing Signet is Too Powerful

in Profession Balance

Aza.2105

The biggest problem is IMO is actually the active heal. If we reduce the passive without doing something to make the active useful, we are just creating a different problem. Truly the active on this skill right now is in the following place. When I see someone press it I think “No No No don’t do that!” We are discussion some options here so if you want this to be constructive give suggestions towards improving the active. Reducing the passive is easy to do but we will not do it without solving the other problem. Also we will not greatly reduce it because it is giving Warriors a sense of sturdiness that we want their profession to have. Without strong heals, Warriors feel too much like everyone else. Setting them apart with strong heals has been good for changing their playstyle feel, but we agree it needs some tweaks.

Jon

Virtues have been said to help balance the guardian; for example, they have a lower base health than the warrior profession but compensate for this with their higher health regeneration granted by Virtue of Resolve.

You increase your support via traits (pure of voice, elemental attunement, etc) and that’s a better option than to have it tied to gear. Let’s imagine a new dungeon (yes, I might have taken that too far) where support is very efficient and sought. You want to play with a group of friends but all of you have offensive gear and traits. Is it easier for 1-2 people to retrait for 3.5s each or get a new sets of gear? As long as anet wants people to randomly create successful parties while giving the incentive to play more supportive we need to have a gear that doesn’t influence said support.

From one perspective gear stats just seem to hold back the game. I don’t feel they were ever needed and that Anet should of stuck with gw1 formula. No stats, just light, medium and heavy armor types.

You are right though, if the game was all about your playstyle being determined by what points you have invested in trait trees then the game would of been much better off. And probably less negativity from players.

“Guise, we need more healers”.

Even if the system mechanics allowed it, they still wouldn’t be needed. To be honest, I feel Anet doesn’t really know how to solve the problem of support and control archetypes co-existing with the dps archetype.

DPS can bring everything to the table that support and control archetypes can. I don’t see how this can change this without either completely overhauling mobs or the system (which would be a huge mistake).

I feel the only support stats that should of existed is condition duration and boon duration, because those are the only supportive stats that slightly separates dps from those two archetypes. Healing power doesn’t make that much of a difference, toughness outside of pvp doesn’t either. But long boons, cripples, immobilizes and vulnerabilities possibly could.

During the live stream one of the devs said: “People have this idea that support is just killing the mob attacking your friend as fast as possible”. He laughs about it. But what is he going to do about it to stop it from occurring? Probably nothing, killing mobs faster will continue to be the considered as optimal support.

Thoughts on the upcoming balance patch...

in Guardian

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

Other thoughts (if not already mentioned) depending on the crit damage change:

Valor takes a hit. Already lacks group support and the loss of damage will make it less valuable.

Defensive traits become more valuable.

Straight percent damage increase traits become more valuable. One in particular: Zealous blade. Since overall players could do less damage the healing gets a small boost. Since crit damage takes a hit the straight damage increase is more valuable.

Symbolic exposure receives a slight unintended buff too. Vulnerability starts to become more valuable.

Zeal itself starts to look slightly better, since power gains relational value.

Also, poison gains value – 33% less heal.

And finally, some sigils will receive a nerf. Dev confirmed it on the forums (I wish I could find the post). So we could be looking into using Sigil of Doom, Sigil of Blood + Leeching, if its left alone. You can actually pre-set sigil of doom easily on an NPC before attacking a player. Get into combat swap weapons run from npc.

Would you please stop reading my mind regarding sigil combos?! But yeah, blood+leech + omnom pies could start to get really interesting. Just need to see what some of the rune changes are (rune of vampirisim) and could be the birth of some interesting leach builds. Only issue is that any other class will be able to use it too. :/

You guys are being very optimistic about the sigil change. I have a feeling that the change will come at a cost were everyone questions if it was better to just have the old sigil system or the new one.

Improving Healing Power & Support Play

in Profession Balance

Ok everyone for the last time, you have to consider the combination of an increased healing power with another passive, like condi and retal…
Passives are what many agree to be ruining the game. Enough passives and the trinity becomes necessary to keep the whole thing together.

Stats by nature are passive.

You get power to passively raise your attack power.
Critical hits are passive and rng.
Critical damage is passive.

The only difference is that toughness doesn’t have skills affected by it. Other than that offense stats are the opposite of defensive ones.

Remove Base Capping from PVP

After 10 and more years of online base capping multiplayers, people still don’t want to do it and rathers zerging mid and losing repeatedly the game.

I’m not complaining people wich need to learn.
I’m complaining those which can’t and don’t want to get better and keep on hindering his/her teammates.

This game is too much hard for some people, you can’t sell space shuttles to cavemen.

Mark my words, bookmark this thread for future reference. If Anet decides to due away with objective style pvp and implement deathmatches then mesmer and thief will dominate DM. Stealth would be king.

[PvE] DPS disparities, weapons/professions

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aza.2105

Aza.2105

As to cross-profession comparisons, is there really any reason why an elementalist (top tier DPS) deals 50% more DPS than a warrior (tier 4 DPS)?

maybe because the ele is 1. more difficult to play and 2. extremely squishy compared to an easy mode 19k hp warrior?

Sounds about right.

The op fails to mention that all the problems he sees are only in pve. In spvp most things are reversed: Hammer warrior is popular, GS warrior is not. Staff guardian is popular, 1h sword/focus is not. The disparity isn’t in dps of the weapons its the AI vs live players.

The AI doesn’t do anything that requires cc/supportive/defensive weapons, so the weapons with the highest dps potential are always chosen. Also, in spvp ele doesn’t do more damage than warrior. They just do not have the sustain to do it.

It would make more sense for toughness to reduce condition duration than condition damage.

I am actually a little disappointed with the changes. I’ve always felt that vigorous precision was to help offset the low health pool. There are so many weaknesses to this profession that adding another seems a little foolish. The proposed change to Litany is also very saddening, even if you were to make it instant, i’d still take Shelter only because you’d have to do consistent damage to make up for the health needed, which is one of the Guardian’s weaknesses.

I don’t feel it was ever Anets intentions to have any class with perma vigor uptime. Guardian’s low hp pool makes sense when you consider the amount of healing sources and boons they have access to.

Warrior: Pin down to 3/4.. any compensation?

Strong skills should be more telegraphed. That’s just how it is.

Skills like backstab?
Lightning Strike?
Power Lock

warriors have enough survuvability to stay alive while executing such attacks
backstab has longer animation than any of warrior attacks due to:
- stealth requirement
- positional requirement
- travel time

let’s assume you are facing d/p thief, to get backstab off he would need to go BP -> HS -> get behind you and use backstab – that is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more time spent on execution than any of warrior attacks

Backstab works any where on the target but directly in front of them.

So what will be done about support?

Aza.2105

In the live stream one of the devs made the remark that players think that support is quickly killing a mob attacking your ally. This is true, but what are you going to do about it?

Currently that method is probably more efficient than what any actual support build has to offer.

Because soldiers DPS isn’t affected by this change … it doesn’t have crit damage or what will be ferocity.

I see I see. Thanks.

I wasn’t seeing your perspective because I forgot power was the primary stat on soldiers.

The impact of that is significant … it affects two of the three primary power stat combos. Relatively, this brings zerks and valk closer to soldiers DPS.

Can you elaborate a bit? I can’t really see your perspective.

Sure … they are removing crit damage as a stat and replacing it with Ferocity. They will use the conversion rate to balance the damage output of builds that use it and their target for that conversion rate will be 10% less damage on a full zerkers build. This will also impact other gear that has crit damage.

Yea I see that part, but how does it bring it closer to soliders dps?

Vigorous Precision now has a 10 sec cd.

Litany of Wrath cast time is now 3/4 sec, may go down to 1/2 sec if needed.

Healing Breeze gives a initial 3200-4.5k heal and then the rest of the heal comes from ticks.

Real Talk: Guardian Weapons

Hammer suffers from repetition. In most instances you are stuck auto attacking and using mighty blow. Anet should make it so that zealot’s embrace, banish and ring of warding have more practical uses.

Mace feels sluggish. Its last auto attack skill “faithful strike” needs to have its cast time significant reduced. Landing this blow against a non stationary target is almost near impossible.

Like wise symbol of faith suffers a similar issue, its casting time is so long that by the time its finished casting the enemy has already run out of range. If both faithful strike and symbol of faith had a reduced casting time, then Mace would be a much better weapon.
