FotM dailies, ruining the experience?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

The biggest problem with FoTM is the fact that you have to complete 3 or 4 paths in one go to raise up a level. Adding a daily that only requires completion of one path just adds to the problems. Frankly the chances of me completing four paths in a row is slim to none, and I’m sure many others have the same issue. Maybe if it rewarded progress for each completed path I’d take more interest, which would make it accessable to a lot more players.

It also has some of the worst, cheesy mechanics seen in any game (jump puzzles, one shot kill mechanics, etc), which is why it’s so unpopular.

Can we just get rid of pets?

in Ranger

Baldrick.8967

There’s a reason my current Ranger is called ‘Why Did My Pet Die’, as they are so bad as to be useless in my preferred game modes – in fact, the only places they are useful is open world pve and spvp, as those are the places you don’t find massive aoe that kills both your pets in seconds.

Until they come up with a pet that can jump waves from the dragon, they are a liability there too- whether kept next to you doing nothing or sent in to do some damage, same result, dead pets and kitten damage output.

Maybe one day they will invent something that makes up for the lack of damage when both your pets are dead, so that you can avenge your dead pets..I even thought of a name for it ‘IWAY’ (I will avenge you)! Oh wait, that was in GW1, so no chance that they would ever use a skill from that in what is laughably called a sequel..

And if the only use most can claim for a pet is a 1.5-2.5 second cast for fury/might on F2, when it stand still while casting so i am dodged out of range by the time it finishes, then clearly the pet is broken..remind me again, how long does a warrior shout take to cast?

F2 skills should be instant cast, and then maybe the pet has a use- a fire and forget small boost before it dies on a long cooldown…

WvW stack rezing

in WvW

Baldrick.8967

There is another issue at play here too- squishies are much more likely to be hard killed than the tanks at the front of the zerg, so the meta classes are more likely to think hard ressing should not be allowed, whereas anyone who plays a back line or other class is more likely to be in favour of keeping it the way it is.

If they remove downed or hard ressing from the game, you will just see even more guards and warriors and less build diversity as everyone will build more tanky.

And in the meantime, whoever is ressing the dead isn’t attacking you, so in theory you should be able to wipe even more of them.

If you are seriously outnumbered then the game is working as intended. If your players get picked off one by one either their positional play or support play needs to be looked at, or you’re choosing the wrong fights.

I agree they need to be changed for wvw, but it won’t happen, as it’s been this way since the start, people have moaned about it, and still nothing has ever been done to fix an internal cooldown on to it.

The solution is to play one of the 4 meta classes, spam your staff 1 at the front of the zerg while rofl stomping those other players that thought playing something else might be more fun.( and tagging everything in sight).

Ranger in WvW after balance patch

in WvW

Baldrick.8967

I’m doing world completion on my ranger at the moment, and hence end up q’ing for wvw on him during prime if i fancy a run around in wvw.

I’ll use lb/gs in wvw, but have sw/wh in my bag (along with everything else). It’s not a glass build, but it is power.

I rarely die in zerg fights, despite the opposition trying to focus me…I’ll drag thiefs away from our necros and eles then scoot away on my gs skill, use barrage to interfere with your eles and necros and focus down those that stray, or focus on thiefs if they are amongst our back line.

Piercing arrows are a lot of fun if you get your angles right.

Positioning is very important, and that’s where so many rangers go horribly wrong.

Personally I don’t use traps in wvw on my zerg build as the plan is to be nowhere near their main zerg! QZ works well on a variety of targets so I drag it along, whereas i find lightning reflexes a waste of a space for me and I generally run two signets for want of anything better. Healing spring generally as my preferred heal as it can be useful for others too, and as elite it’s either rampage or entangle depending on what we’re facing and what i’m doing.

Rangers have a lot of uses and I enjoy the challenge of playing one well (get it wrong, unlike being on a guard, you’ll die pretty fast), but when things get sticky I’d rather be on my staff ele or necro.

What is the barrier to entry for this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Baldrick.8967

Baldrick.8967

Roll warrior, faceroll through all pve content and map completion..heal signet is overpowered as a passive heal.

Or roll a ranger and pew pew through the pve content (you’ll probably be kicked in dungeons though).

For wvw, roll a staff/x guard and spam 1 whilst spamming F to collect all the lootbags.

Barrier to entry is low to non-existent. Some builds, classes, and situations have a much higher skill barrier (decent wvw, roaming, etc) but you can roll those as second toons.

It’s not that hard to be useful as a ranger in zerg fights, even running lb/gs. It’s all about positioning and causing maximum disruption to their backlines, so having a few to discourage thiefs from your squishies is also good.

Although I have to admit, I see so many lb rangers fire barrage against the front of an enemy zerg, it’s not surprising so few people rate them. rapid fire with traited piercing can be fun though;-)

Cos as people have said time and time again, we don’t want to do content we hate. Do you want to do content you hate? No? Then please take your fallacious argument out to the pretentiousness dump where it belongs, kthxbai.

But how is it the games fault that people simply refuse to play parts of the game?
One could of course also point out that dailies are in no way or form even slightly required to enjoy the game. You can play whatever you want in the game, without even checking out what the dailies are.

And about the whole “don’t want to do content we hate”: Where to draw the line?
Should people that only login and basically use the game as an interactive chat also get their 10 APs every day for simply logging in and chatting? Maybe they hate all other content in the game?

Using your argument, if people don’t like every single aspect of the game, they should feel bad.

Or according to your argument, if you like going to the cinema, you should go every Friday and see whatever film is starting next when you arrive there, no matter what it is.

It’s quite clear the majority of posters dislike the changes and the feeling that they are being driven towards content they do not wish to do, and are expressing that opinion here.

White Sword Removal Very Helpful

Before the removal of white swords the bigger zerg could carelessly Ktrain all over the maps and defend those objective that where tagged by swords, now against a smaller but more organized server it can loose more than it can conquer.

[/quote]

I’ll fix that for you: before the removal of white swords the bigger server could carelessly zerg all over the place and defend those objectives that were tagged by swords, now 4 or 5 people can be bored senseless acting as scouts that the smaller servers can’t afford and still zerg all over the map, and the smaller server now has even less chance of stopping it, or has to spread out so much that they have hardly anyone to cap anything .

The bigger server can very quickly flip back anything you manage to pvd, and might actually want you to flip something so they can flip it back for the rewards, as defending gives nothing. they might also be looking for some fights, but without map information showing where the enemies are, having people running around getting bored trying to find a group that doesn’t want to be found might be fun for the first 100 hours, but after that you’re going to get bored.

Removing white swords comes from the ‘adopt a dev’ that got a rosy world view of what wvw is like during a tournament prime time, playing for a guild, probably in ts, and in organised guilds and raids. The reality of wvw is very different.

I enjoyed the bit about ‘running around flipping camps and sentries and still being able to scout hills in my spare time’. A decent guild group will flip hills through the walls by the time you can run to the sentry , cap that, run to the camp, cap that, and run back to alert your server that it’s under attack- not to mention once they breach the first wall you’re not getting close enough to set a disabler unless they are asleep.

The problem is no white swords encourages pvd whilst at the same time discouraging upgrading anything, as once your coverage drops there is little to no chance of having sufficient scouts (ask a guild raid to supply a couple scouts, see what they say…) and a fast enough response to stop the cap. It leads to people caring less and less about defending structures and turning wvw into eotm karma train part 2.

Maybe the plan is to force pvp players in to spvp (with all it’s build and food restrictions)…in which case the plan might be working.

Simple solution is to make only player interactions with the mobs count towards credit, so anything the pet does on it’s own doesn’t count, the player must cause some weapon based damage to count (which eliminates retal damage, etc ).

Or as the map is based on sand, have it slowly sink anyone who stands in the same spot (outside of the first camp with the teleport) so that afking is punished by sinking into the afk’rs maze which then requires player interaction to escape.

Leaving scouts at important points and havocing is the way to take advantage of this. .

I’d suggest your entire guild does exactly that for a month, covering every point that you would like a scout at (this is, of course, a joke).

The point is, scouting isn’t fun, especially if you are facing two servers both intent on attacking your structures, as there is no alternative but to have somebody babysit the structure, otherwise by the time you wondered off to check the camp and come back the gate is down.

If they want to keep this change then camps need to be harder to take and towers and keeps need to be made more resistant so they take at least 5 minutes to take down a wall or a door (with better rewards for defending and attacking).

Maybe if they announced ‘from tomorrow, any new toon made after today will be rewarded with a precursor of their choice upon completion of the pve world map (wvw maps have been removed from the requirement) we’d have something to work on.

The new choice restriction is terrible.

I now get to sit and wait for Maw, collect ten logs, go look at a vista, and do events in Southsun cove (is there even events there?).

The wvw choices aren’t much better- take a keep (might happen never on EB, maybe once every few hours on borders).

As for spvp, tried it once, don’t like standing on cap spots with restricted builds or facing the latest cheese builds with my less than great reactions (age and medication), so not likely to help any team win anything.

Of course, it will take them ages to change it.

Oh, and when do we get laurels, don’t seem to be getting any, unless that’s broken for some people too.

With the white swords gone the smaller guilds in all of Tier 1 now have a chance to show just how useful they can be. Instead of forcing servers to blob up in order to defend then now have to spread out which makes the game much more fair for all size groups to both attack and defend. Personally my guild is a havoc guild and now we have the capability to not only attack waypointed structures but if the scouts are not paying attaention we regularly capture them. Scouts now actually have to pay attaention to all the sneakier places for siege units to be placed instead of just semi-afk and wait for swords to pop then start looking. That being said ArenaNet should definately work out a reward system of some kind for those who ACTIVELY scout and find havoc teams being sneaky.

It’s good change if you like pvd- for which you could have just gone and joined eoTM for the karma train. For less populated servers and those that actually want to fight against other human controlled toons, it’s a disaster.

I agree the recent change is a complete slap in the face as far as trying to find fights- the map just looks totally dead now unless someone tags your keep, which makes even more people just not bother with wvw. As I belong to the server that gave up on points a long time ago in favour of looking for the fights, I totally understand your comment about different playstyles.

But bear in mind a lot of the people doing the scouting don’t particularly want to waste time sitting there either- it’s just that if they don’t do it, no one will, so they aren’t playing the way they want either.

All the recent changes seem designed to force people into doing what Anet want them to do rather than ‘play how I want’, and i wonder where it will all end.

I don’t think they discuss these matters with real wvw players before they implement them or think through the consequences.

Reinventing wvw

in WvW

Posted by: Baldrick.8967

Baldrick.8967

I think in order to reinvent/revitalise wvw the entire system needs a redesign together with one map and a reward system that benefits players in pve.

So as an outline, the four existing maps will be scrapped and one new, larger map will be put in it’s place. This map will have temporary portals within it can appear and can be used to quickly move somewhere in your enemy’s backline, meaning a tactic of one big zerg will always lead to failure. Maximum population per server will be 120. The map will have several levels and connections as well as choke points.

Towers will now take a minimum of 5 minutes to take, and towers will automatically reveal enemy players within siege distance of them. Keep portals can no longer be disabled by 1-5 players tagging them but will be on a timer if hit by 2 or more rams.

Taking two towers within 3 minutes of each other will reward double rewards, taking three within 4 minutes will give an extra bonus (rewarding co ordination and teamwork).

Rewards will be map wide (player drops aside, need to think of a way of rewarding support players/scout, etc better on that) with perhaps a reward based on total player kills on the map by your side awarded every 5 or ten minutes.

Random siege placed outside of towers will now disappear after 5 minutes of no usage.

Arrow carts will be removed from the game. Towers will be equipped with unbreakable defences (in a tower:P) such as a ballista or catapult (with better range control) with limited ammunition. Rams will need to be carried and operated by at least 4 players.

Groups of more than 20 will suffer from environmental effects such as slow to discourage zerging.

Players will benefit in pve from helping their server in wvw with rewards such as higher magic find, an increase in base stats, damage, crit rate, drop rate, etc based on their contribution as measured by their server score during the time they play. these bonuses will only count in pve and not wvw.

There’s a rough outline for something that would be fun to play.

Thanks for highlighting exactly why people don’t bother volunteering for scouting. Your response is ’we’re more important, someone else less important can do the spotting for us so that we can have all the fun’. Completely selfish.

Scouts are there to tell you where the enemy is that you are looking to fight, but your attitude is that scouting is beneath you. Next time you ask where the enemy is and then moan about there being no scout reports, ponder your own failings.

If you’re running a guild raid, then assign one or two of your members to do the job on a rotation basis.

If you’re driving the train on ts, then organise a rotation between those players on ts (who will give you better information anyway).

Don’t expect others to do what you are not prepared to do yourselves because of some misguided impression that your time and efforts are in some way ‘more valuable’ then the person you expect to scout.

Maybe they will one day fix the rewards for scouting but until then, think of the poor scout!

Nothing for roamers to tap, don’t want to cap empty towers because I don’t care who wins the week. Capping camps with NOBODY showing up to defend since they have no clue it’s being taken. Who honestly thought this was a good idea?

Pretty much exactly how my roaming group feels about it. Before this update, we used to hit towers with a paper cata or treb from a long range to make sure white swords would appear for as long as possible, in order to pick a fight, and to make sure they can’t just run right back into the tower when their health drops low. Almost no one would fight us otherwise, unless they had a severe number advantage or a gate 5 steps behind them to nuthug.

Now, we lost that way of picking a fight; no one shows up. Running from objective to objective capping things turns up nothing. And it seems that’s the experience that other roamers on the opposing servers are getting, too: everything of ours that gets hit is almost always by a large group. Previously, there’d be small parties hitting towers and flipping camps fairly frequently. Seems those smaller groups merged with their zergs out of boredom, too.

We call out enemy movements, but commanders don’t care. Everyone’s just treating it like eotm, letting everything flip so they can take it back later. A plea to people to fight for the sake and fun of fighting just gets “We can take it back later,” or complete silence while the zerg sits in the keep or at spawn waiting for our towers to be lost. It’s boring. :/ This update took the pvp out of wvw.

This is the result of many of the hard core wvw players giving up and being superseded by the players from EoTM (defend? are you £$%^$$& crazy?) who will merrily run around in a blob recapping stuff and avoiding fights all day long (and who generally have no build, no idea of blast finishers, etc).

When there is zero reward for scouting, almost zero for defending and the end result doesn’t matter (no reward for winning- unless those extra two greens from that extra rank chest mean sooo much) then this is the end result. (que random ‘hard core’ player saying ’it’s not for the rewards, blah blah’). Most players want shinies for their efforts- look at the offerings Anet keep adding to spvp, prize money , etc or pve where you get 9 green/blue for hitting one mob on the way past an event in Silverwastes, then compare that to zero for camping a tower for an hour…

Trying to find people to scout in a dying game mode was bad enough, but the latest change is the exact opposite of what was needed. What is needed is a way of seeing larger concentrations of players on the map when they get close to a camp or structure, which would promote a lot more fights and a lot less pvd.

The latest change just means people don’t bother upgrading as much as they know sooner or later a 5 man team will ninja the tower without anyone being around to see it.

My two cents:

For PVE, I have some concerns over the overtly specific tasks such as kill X world boss, because X boss only spawns at a certain time. I would prefer this to be something like kill ANY world boss or kill X or Y or Z world boss.

For PvP, win a match with X profession is not a good idea. Your match is going to overloaded with X profession. 5 vs 5 decap engineers! Allow some leeway like win with 4 random professions instead.

For WvW, do we really need the extra badges of honors? Can we get something else? like traps, blueprints, wvw food, ascended mats, bag of loot maybe?

No thought was put into the reward for wvw – you get more badges from a random chest after capping a supply camp in eotm, and almost as much wexp…

The one thing wvw players don’t want are more badges or wexp – they need other stuff, like laurels for ascended trinkets etc, t6 mats, basically almost anything other than badges.

The only map that has a q these days is EB at primetime on SFR, or one of the other maps if we map jump. rest of the time there is no q.

Doesn’t really matter what EU server you join unless it’s purely for wvw, in which case join Deso. but remember, EoTM is for upscaleds, don’t be another loot bag in real wvw.

Prize for the worst one so far: complete a level 11-20 fractals. The sheer terrible thought process that decided that should get anywhere near a list shows how out of touch whoever thought of it is.

People who say ‘collecting x in y’ is easy are assuming players have even unlocked that area, whereas many people haven’t, as they tend to only play the bits they want to, especially if they are no longer playing their first toon.

The new system isn’t completely terrible as far as dailies go, but the choice needs to be expanded so players aren’t forced into doing things they don’t want to do- which leads to resentment and eventually some players quitting.

I just don’t like the restriction on choice, but the actual bags you get aren’t as bad as I feared.

Too many pvp choices, and some of the pve ones are just silly, compared to capturing a keep which might not happen at all if your side isn’t doing well when you’re on.

Bring Lion's Arch back to its former glory

Maybe it’s the same team that is working on wvw that is in charge of the Lions arch construction crews, hence why we see little to no progress after months and months. Oh wait, can’t be them, there is actually some progress in LA!

[Maths] Will you lose laurels this next year?

What this tells me is I still need a year or so per toon to get my ascended rings and accessories, as having to run at least 3 fractals in a row doesn’t work for me (and i hate the place). And that’s only if I force myself to choose the laurel reward rather than some other shiny.

When they finally make ascended stuff tradeable all those hoarders who run fractals will be able to sell those rings and stuff and will find a willing buyer.

WvW (no loot = no fun)

in WvW

Wiping people is pretty fun, you should try it.

Tried it, got boring real fast winning almost every match up. Most wvw fights last seconds with both sides steamrolling into each other, or are so evenly balanced no one on either side dies at all.

After the 10,000th time of wiping them, even you will be bored.

GvG in GW1 had much better variety, more build diversity, more planning, more skill, and had a point. You really felt like what you did mattered and affected the outcome, and had a result, which was moving up the guild ladder. Even HA was much better structured, watchable and you felt involved- holding for hours was awesome.

In contrast, in wvw you could literally go afk in the middle of the zerg and no one would even notice.

Why Wvw fails to attract players

in WvW

Posted by: Baldrick.8967

Baldrick.8967

It’s very simple- loot.

EoTm gives more badges, more loot, more karma by just following a train.

Silverwastes chests and events give so much loot it’s not even funny.

An hour in wvw and unless you play a spam 1 tag everything class you might see half a dozen bits of loot, compared to opening 20-30 chests, 30 events, 40 loot bags containing up to t6 mats, etc if you wonder around in Silverwastes.

I’m sure a lot more players would try wvw if it had more loot, even if they have totally failed to update it in two years.

Maybe ‘season 3’ should be a revision and new maps to wvw, with piles of achievement points available (won’t happen, but we can dream).

As it is there is almost no reason to carry on logging in to wvw apart from the occasional even fight, and it’s very clear that is the conclusion reached by the majority of players.

Oh for crying out loud not this again. Seriously, if all that matters to you is loot go to EoTM. You guys would never play WvW anyway if all that prevent you to play is loot. You would only accept to follow the daily Choo-choo train of Karma and be done. No thank. Bad loot perception (it is not badder than anywhere else at all btw) protect WvW from you guys as far as I’m concerned.

But ANet has said that they want people to do what they want and be able to achieve the things they want. Should a pure WvW player really be so far behind in the money earning game than a pure PvE player?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for equal amount of loot.

Silver wastes are giving tons of nothings. They overwhelm your inventory. That is all. The best loot I had so far in terms of quality was always in WvW or in Fractals.

But the point is, WvW is plagued by people who are not there for the game itself.

Maybe you but that’s pure rng. In Silver Wastes, by playing efficiently I can get around 100 champ bags and about 50-100 rares in just the course of a few hours, whereas WvW I am lucky to get like 50 heavy loot bags for the same amount of time provided people are actually fighting instead hiding in keeps. Also, beyond just the monetary value of the stuff, there is also the practicality and novelty of it. Like you can do the new content in PvE or the PvP rewards tracks to get the new stats or skins but there isn’t really an option in WvW to get these.

I don’t get what your argument is, I have played wvw solidly most days for 1-2 hours a day for 2 years. I play to have fun with my guildies in battles where the enemy far outweigh our own numbers, i play to have fun with my server mates, i play to make my servers (Gunnars Hold) enemies regret taking that camp, or killing one of our dolyaks. I play the game mode for what it is. That being said i have also crafted 4 legendaries, and a couple of other expensive skins. I do not care for wvw rewards, the chests we get are an added bonus to capping a tower/keep. They do not need improving, and wvwvw does not need to become an endless ktrain full of rewards. That is eotm.

Asking for equal loot is silly, the game mode is not designed for loot, it is a pvp atmosphere where the goal is battle and fun, again, not loot. If you want loot, goto eotm, if you want loot, try pve. But please stop trying to suggest that there should be a change the fundamentals of the game mode because YOU do not feel like you are getting enough loot, because if you are there for loot you are missing the point entirely.

You’re missing the point entirely.

In order to attract more people to the game mode, there needs to be better rewards overall, not just for a couple of expert roaming groups who wander around flipping sentries and camps and ignoring all the boring necessary stuff like defending, scouting, upgrading, escorting dollies, or playing support classes rather than spamming in the front line tagging everything in sight.

Otherwise it is just a bore fest. Sooner or later you will get bored of the same match ups, get past 1,000 ranks, watch the same boring meta and same boring maps with the same people week in week out, with numbers dwindling except for the server hoppers thinking coming to a higher tier will make wvw more exciting, with no affect on the rest of the server no matter what happens in wvw.

Traits for newly created characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Baldrick.8967

The bigger problem when making a new toon isn’t so much the gold for the traits, it;s the skill points. You simply don’t have enough to buy traits while unlocking skills.

Most of the new people I chat to in game check out one build, then just unlock that set of skills and traits.

The other problem is traits and skills have a much greater effect on squishy types than warriors, especially with bad gears. Try rolling a new caster class or engi and see how restricted you feel if you use your skill points to open up skills in the order they appear (those 20/25 sp heals…).

The NPE should be renamed the PRS (player removal system) as I’ve yet to find anyone I know that likes it.

Please add build saving!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Anyone mentioning GW1 still hasn’t got the message- the only connection between GW2 and GW1 is the name, which was used to sell more copies at launch.

One of the best features of GW1 was the ability to change your build and skills and save all your builds, as well as share them between players. It made build diversity easy.

Why it wasn’t in GW2 from day one will forever remain a mystery (stand by for usual white knights telling me how easy it is to swap all traits, weapons, etc and why would I need a function for this). As I play several classes and have several builds for all of them, this sort of function would save me throwing pieces of paper around the room looking for a build sheet every time I want to spec back to a specific build for (say) my engineer.

Upcoming Daily/Monthly changes 12/10/14

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I wonder if we will ever have a change that people will wait for being implemented before they rage like mad about it.

Maybe the better system would simply be to not talk about it until it was actually released.

Or, heaven forbid, actually ask players what they want, think is broken, or needs tweaking, before launching another change as bad as NPE? Locked traits was the worst idea ever, it means people don’t experiment with builds at all as they level or even when they hit 80.

My biggest concern is laurels, as daily/monthly was the only way to get these for us non-fractals players (having to run 3 or 4 IN A ROW to level up doesn’t work for me and many others), leading to one ring a month if I completed them every day. Sounds like now I have to choose between laurels and something else….
