I’d love to see a ‘fund to pay for a dev for wvw’ item in the gem store, where if enough people pay for it wvw gets a dev and has a chance of seeing new maps, new features, better rewards, etc.
Or a ‘random drop in wvw’ item that awards you one rare item and 3 blue/green item boxes every five minutes that you are in wvw (to try and compete with the pve content).
.
. There is a plan and a master schedule,
So if there is a plan and master schedule, can you tell us what’s on it for wvw? (I’m avoiding stating the obvious flippant remark here).
I dream of the day I get any chests containing any celestial exotic stuff, ever.
Getting lag in high population maps in pve too. Guess they did the usual of pulling off server capacity to support the glorious e-sport that is standing on circles and playing cheese runners with screaming children as commentators (aka spvp tournament that less than 3,000 people watched on twitch). That $50,000 first prize could have paid a wvw dev for a year!
Luckily there are no longer queues for t1 EU match ups so d/cing a lot no longer makes too much difference.
1000 gems, you can buy a mini-dev that follows you around and promises to make change to wvw and new maps…..
I bought GW1 three months ago and play through it now. I played GW2 since last open beta weekend. I decided to play GW1 on the side because the Living Story season 2 made me curious about the lore behind it and I began to feel a greater appreciation for the background and the past of Tyria.
I bought the complete set of campaigns including EotN. So far my experiences with GW1 are mixed.
It is great to experience the fall of Ascalon. It is also great to see Piken’s Square as an actual location and not only as a server name. It is nice to be able a real healer again (Monk/Mesmer in my case).
I have mixed feelings about the skill system. There are a lot of skills, but many of them are of very limited use. The crafting system is rudimentary. You cannot jump. More importantly: you can’t even slide down a tiny slope and must walk really long to go around obstacles. Quests are old fashioned (though they usually fit in very well into the background) and you must walk, walk, walk. And in between you kill trash mobs for uninteresting loot. And then you walk some more. In an instanced landscape, only your henchmen, my one rl party member (a warrior) and me. Did I already mention that you have to walk a lot?
I can see why GW1 was a good game in its time. You know, when we had still to invent tv and the summers were warmer, when there was snow at christmas, the young ones behaved better, furniture was made by hand out of real wood and plums were sweeter than today. But I am so, so glad that there is GW2 now. It is in my opinion superior to GW1 in nearly every aspect, including skills, weapons, landscape design, “quest” design etc. The only feature I really like in GW1 so far are GvG battles.
Otherwise the sequel to GW1 is right here.
The real draw of GW1 was the pvp- HA, random arenas, team arenas, gvg, even the Luxor battlegrounds (ts a must!), and the end game dungeon content and hard mode which required good teamwork (not just ’grab zerk, stack in spot, try to kill boss before everyone dies from being squishy).
If you just wondered around in pve then you missed the best part of the game where many of those skills you thought were redundant made all the difference.
Checked out whether there was a queue at primetime this evening on T1 EU, no map had a queue and EB had the outmanned buff- and that was on SFR.
There is literally nothing that keeps people in wvw any more- even the fights aren’t that interesting any more as the gwen meta has become totally stale, but this was always going to be the problem with no healers and so few skills to choose from as main skills.
Rewards are practically non-existant, EoTM gives 10 times the rewards, karma, wexp, etc. PVE gives massively better rewards.
Badges are still almost completely useless, and totally devalued by the huge amounts you get in EoTM.
I think you should be checked to see whether you started outside the JP’s area, so no parking allowed.
Then you can complete the JP from scratch.
Then you can be rewarded the same loot table as a wvw rank chest, scaled to the level of the area the JP is in. (so basically two blues or a blue and green).
Each completed JP will be worth 100-500 points, you get a chest after 5000 points.
There, now JP loot is fixed:-)
The biggest single mistake they made was thinking they could do away with a dedicated healer class, which restricts what they can actually do with content and leads to the zerk meta as well as encounters with bosses that are pretty vanilla- make it too hard and players just get one shotted (so no point in wearing anything but zerk anyway), make it easier and zerk is still the best option…
I think they would have been better off calling it Jump Puzzle 2, but of course calling it ‘Guild Wars’ sold a lot of copies to GW fans and players that otherwise might never have bought it.
Already enough bosses that one shot no matter what you are wearing, which is another reason a lot of people run zerk- when it doesn’t matter what you are wearing when you’re hit, why bother wearing anything else?
I had an idea to improve wvw- instead of having $25,000 and $50,000 prizes for the e-sport no one watches, use that money to pay a dev or two and a few interns for a year and actually spend some money on developing new maps, new mechanics, etc for wvw.
Doing these rules changes through the holiday season doesn’t seem like the best idea to me- but it might pull in a nice pile of pve zerk builds for us to collect loot from so might not be all bad:-)
Here’s how you fix the problem- design it so the cutscene can be skipped and everything moves into place whether or not someone is watching it.
Most of them involve listening to two NPC’s talking to each other without being able to interact, which might be vaguely interesting the first time around but if you’re on your 3rd or 4th time through (as it doesn’t unlock account wide, just each toon) it just gets tedious in the extreme.
Oh wait, we’re not supposed to play multiple toons!
I just finished it after 2 hours. Without guides, without friends, without help. The hard way! and I never had more fun in a game for a loong time. I love silverwastes caves
Nice job Anet!
Keep the good work! +1Was about 2 hours for me too, but I afk’d for a good 30+ minutes.
I loved this zone-wide jumping puzzle. I want more jumping puzzles like this.
There are a huge number of games with jumping puzzles in them, go play those- they are called platform games. Shinies at the end of them too!
Personally I think it’s a huge waste of design effort to make something that players will do once (maybe twice) or just not bother doing at all.
Just scrap them- we’ve been asking for anything useful for badges from wvw for the last 2 years and nothing came of that either…not even being able to make ascended rings, etc that you otherwise have to do something dreadful for like fractals.
Here’s the problem with attracting players to wvw: nothing basically has changed in 2 years, and the rewards are terrible (I’m not counting eotm karma train). I can get more dragonite in 5 seconds in LS map opening one chest than I’ll get after an epic battle for SM.
They need to scrap all the borderlands maps and make one new large map with 3 sides with around 20 objectives on each, some of which can only be captured by holding the cap circle at the same time. Also, some straight forward cap points that grant bonuses to the team holding them- and not in some out of the way place. Something similar to the old orb in gw1. Environmental effects to discourage large zergs (something simple, like muddy ground slows down the zerg due to larger numbers, become visible on the map after a certain size, etc. Maybe make it so ‘scouts’ in towers ‘report’ numbers so when you look at the map you can see roughly how many attackers and defenders there are, etc
There have been literally hundreds of ideas for improving wvw stated in the forums, all of which have fallen on deaf ears whilst they make the biggest JP in any MMO as one release of the LS, something most people will try once and then never go back.
He missed out 2015 when he said December….
What nerf..one person can almost continually still disable siege, two can.
The nerf they should have made is for each disabler to only disable ONE piece of siege.
Yeah took me a while to find the toggle off for the most annoying ‘highlight’ feature.
I do wish they would test these things and ask whether people feel the need for it before foisting it upon us….guess we should be thankful you can at least turn the super annoying highlighting off, although i had to ask for someone to tell me where the option was.
Sad. the new area is just one big jumping puzzle. This game really has become just another platform game with better graphics.
Great atmosphere? Lol.
If you want lots of jumping puzzles, go play a jumping game- there are thousands of them already out there.
I was hoping for a continuation of the first part, instead it’s just a wasted space and a JP that will be dead in a few weeks if not less.
What wvw needs is a complete overhaul, with new maps, new mechanics and ways to force blobs to be less effective, as well as a huge increase in rewards. The one thing that would put the nail in the coffin for wvw regulars is filling it with pve rubbish.
I haven’t set foot in wvw this week since LS came out, due to the rewards for just walking around the map opening up bandit chests and getting event rewards for hitting one mob on the way past, then huge piles of loot from the bags and rewards, etc.
You want to try the last two LS instalments when you only have the use of one hand. It’s an absolute nightmare.
Eating a Steak is hard with 1 hand but most people have 2 hands and enjoy Steak.
Your steak is bad quality, you should be able to chop it with a fork!
On a more serious note, I found the aspects boss a complete pain on a new guardian as I have traits only for one build and am equipped with a staff, hammer and GS. not really keen on farming for skill points to retrait as it’s main purpose is to gather 200 SP for a part of my next legendary, nor buying a ranged set just for this kitten.
Some of the new content creatures just aren’t funny if you don’t remove torment fast enough as it hits too kitten a lowish HP toon.
Tried it on staff ele and all of it is a breeze, as it was on ranger too (basically any ranged toon properly traited).
For newer toons unable to retrait due to lack of SP or without funds to get ranged equips or a full set of equips, I can imagine some of this content not being much fun. The NPE really is shown to fall down here.
wvw has the worst chance of any reward mode, because generally it has the worst loot per hour of anywhere.
You are 100 times better off running around the new LS map than you are playing wvw.
I got very lucky on a toon I haven’t played in 6 months on the toilet two days ago- made a short bow precursor from 44 exotics, then tried greatswords and actually got a Dusk.
Net result after 500 gold, up one precursor. I have noticed toons I don’t play for a long time get better drops and a better chance on toilet than ones I play all the time, so you might try that.
Never had one drop ingame.
Change to a kill based points system will only make blobbing even worse than it is now, as everyone would be encouraged not to be a free kill and blob up for safety in numbers.
What they really need is better maps, better mechanics, better ways of filling those maps and better rewards to encourage people back to wvw.
Fastest way to prevent spawn camping is move en masse to another map. This involves using voice comms and having a commander or two. If you keep running out the door expecting a different result time after time, that’s the classic definition of insanity.
Of course if ‘someone else’ has to organise this every time, then ‘no one’ will and there will be 10-15 headless suicide merchants on your side going out one at a time to offer themselves up as free bags for hours on end. Why would the campers move away when it’s a good source of sparse wvw rewards?
No. We don’t want pve in wvw, we want variation and some realistic returns and objectives.
The problem is they made badges too easy to get in EoTM- people playing that have literally thousands of them.
If you think the rewards are terrible you obviously don’t play wvw- i’ve never so much loot in so short a time as these LS maps provide.
until they fix the complete imbalance of drops between wvw and pve, wvw will continue to die a slow death.
the new ls feels a bit like wvw without the humans, with places being attacked all teh time and rewards for defending (ie everything that wvw lacks). In an hour I filled my bags without trying at all….
The whole system of getting a precursor is flawed. There should be an epic set of quests that you can complete (solo) in order to earn your precursor (of your choice) and along the way the quests reward much of what you will need to make the legendary, so that when you complete the quest chain you feel like you deserve the legendary as you have achieved something to obtain it.
I know they were planning on doing a ‘precursor’ series of events but the plan was dropped- probably as they spend all their time on living bs and nothing else.
Level it up in EoTM- no need for skills, just follow the train, use some boosters and hey presto lvl80 in a few days- and all without learning how to play the class 9and probably getting bad habits too).
The single biggest reason people would rather do anything other than play in the main wvw maps is the sheer lack of rewards. Wvw server buffs are server wide and mainly un noticed- maybe if there was a real affect that you could carry to the rest of the game that could be gained by completing some stuff in wvw (like, say , the server scores x number of kills while you are active in wvw (ie if you are in a safe area or not in the area of combat you get no credit, no leeching please!).
If you want karma and wexp then EoTM is sooo much better that you would be foolish to waste time in main wvw, and that is part of the problem.
Old, stale maps, no rotation at all, 3 are exactly the same. Why bother?
Wvw needs a total rethink from the rewards side to map design, points system, and how it affects the rest of the server. It needs to engage people from the server and make there be a reason for them to WANT to play in wvw.
At the moment, there is no real reason to play wvw, and until that changes, wvw as a game mode will continue to suffer disinterest and declining numbers.
No interest in some ‘title’ for showing up, and which discourages you from moving to another server. Your title could mean i leave SFR and join Vabbi after 5000 hours, and for the next 5000 hours it shows …nothing.
Wvw doesn’t need more titles, it needs the existing ones to be made sensible and for some work to be done on the rest of the game mode.
But now you have brought it up, I expect in six months we’ll see ‘huge changes coming to wvw- server titles’ being hailed as the biggest change to hit wvw in forever and a mighty effort by the devs….
See, this is what happens when the devs join busy servers in large guilds in a season- they get a totally distorted view of what wvw is really like for the vast majority, then start saying they are going to implement some of the worst bad ideas they got from their rose tinted view of wvw.
Of course, we all know it’s a bad idea, the forum’s biggest white knight has ridden in to try and justify it:-)
Start farming for it now, spend 12 hours a day farming for it, and by 2100 you might get one to drop.
Or throw 3-4,000 in gold into the mystic toilet to try and get one.
Or do the sensible thing, farm for other stuff, and buy it from the auction.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me personally, always appreciated even if we have completely different viewpoints.
Yeah yes, of course something came from the last group of wvw CDI’s ..colour of tags for commanders, which you were going to charge huge amounts for, then backpeddled furiously after the adverse reaction.
It’s not that we don’t believe you, it’s just that wvw has seen so little change and the current crop of ideas arising from the rose tinted view of wvw devs got by playing in seasons in guilds are just plain bad.
Hence the feeling that’s it’s all hot air and wvw has been left to rot..many of us came from gw1 expecting to see , well, guild wars like gvg implemented, pvp only skills, regular skill adjustments, interaction on maps, revolving and evolving wvw maps, new maps, etc …that’s how it feels from over here.
Why bother? It’s not as if any of the other CDI’s led to anything much (if at all), so one more for people to flap in the wind doesn’t really interest me.
- New amazing looking PvE map that relies on WvW mechanics
- West part of the map looks like a GvG map teaser
- Little area to show us that open world PvP is quite possible and easy (we could have optional duels, opens possibilities for battle arenas)
- Finally an amazing Living story glass/crystal area that would be a perfect ambience for a dungeon or PvP arena but instead is made to be played aloneIs this a teaser of things to come? Competitive players have been waiting for new content for a year…
Nope, you have it the wrong way around- it shows their complete lack of intention of doing anything at all to wvw.
Make an open pvp area in pve and this is what happens: all the kittens will wonder around in groups ganking any solo players they can find, and claim to be ‘leet’ for being able to kill a pve specced player with their fully kitted out pvp build.
The problem the OP is highlighting is the fact that some uplevels think they are still in pve and just charge in thinking they will be fine and everyone will save them, are instantly downed, become rallybait, then shout in all chat asking for a res, moan about not being ressed, finally portal res, run back to the fight and repeat their step one.
Generally these people will be whispered and told they would be better off in EOTM. In a close match up they are taking the space of a level 80, besides which, they will level up much faster in EOTM than they ever will in main EOTM.
I’ve seen, been, and played with some excellent upscaleds who know their limitations and even been last man standing in a fight when my ele was around 50, so it is possible to be valuable s long as you are using the right class. It’s also helpful if you are on voice comms!
If you’re bringing an upscaled, then know your position and know the things that you can do that are useful to your server- generally these things won’t earn you much experience or karma, so unless you are there purely for the fun of playing wvw you really would be better off levelling in EOTM and then coming back next week as an 80.
The problem with the whole ‘adopt a dev’ is that they have now taken their rosy view of organised guild experiences and seek to apply that overall, conveniently forgetting all the other aspects of wvw that guilds tend to ignore. Try asking a guild raid to supply some scouts and see what response you get’ that’s someone else’s job, we’re on a raid’ is the polite phrasing…
They also totally failed to explore the lower tiers, the majority who play in small guilds or ‘guildless’, the roamers, the defenders, the siegers, the scouts, and all the other jobs, the outmanned, and the very small servers where scouts are a luxury they cannot afford.
It’s no wonder they think removing white swords is a good idea, given their skewed view of wvw obtained during adopt a dev during the busiest time on wvw.
What they need is a few interns whose job is to join the lower tiers, off peak hours, solo, etc and then report back their findings. Or, heaven forbid, ask the community for their take on it…
Why is it a problem that Ascended Rings can’t be slavaged? If they’re taking up inventory space, just merch them. That’s been possible since day 1 of Ascended gear.
To be fair its more of a rewards problem that snowballs into this. See you run a lvl50 frac with a pug, if you get lucky that will take about 1.5 hours. As reward? you get sometimes something decent, but 99% of the time a useless ring or nothing. now after a 1.5hr run ur left with one less inv space. Fair?
If you want to talk about fair, how about 1000’s of hours of wvw and maybe 2 ascended rings in all that time, both useless.
Ascended stuff should have been made tradeable, so you can profit by your runs and others who cannot do fractals or would rather not can obtain their rings etc in less than a few years.
Wait they are removing any indication of battle so the only way to figure out where people are is by randomly running into them and following the blob swords?
Is this the real life? is this just fantasy?
To be fair if we should compare it to the real life time there would actually be no way to contact the rest of your forces during a surprise attack, unless you have very sneaky birds that managed to fly away before they got killed.
And if it was real life, any large force moving around in such a small area would be tracked all the time, so should appear on the map….your point was?
The biggest problem arising form this ‘adopt a dev’ is that they totally failed to see wvw from the average player’s viewpoint.
Smaller servers were ignored.
people without guilds or in tiny guilds were ignored.
scouts were ignored.
So they now come back with a totally screwed up viewpoint of what wvw is really like outside a tournament for the vast majority of players and will base decisions off of that false information.
Instead of ‘adopt a dev’ they should try ‘have a dev on each server for a week’, where they spend the first week guarding a tower or camp, second week roaming, third week looking for a guild that plays wvw in the bottom servers, etc and they must only play other classes, not GWEN. maybe then they might get a realistic viewpoint.
In real life any large force moving around would be spotted, so what we should have is any blob of 20 or more marked on the map. Contacts with enemies should appear on the map as these would also be reported.
Instead, we get the last indications of where the opposition is removed from the map, making it either ‘stand in tower and do sweet fa for a few hours, there’s a good chap, don’t mind us we’ll carry on gaining goodies’ or just join the karma train and forget about having scouts or defenders.
Beware, expressing an opinion about the OP and his overwhelming love of the game will earn you an infraction. Not surprising really…
I’m amazed anyone can support the idea that only people currently active in the game should be ‘allowed’ to post in the forums. The level of censorship and the mindset behind it beggars belief.
It’s ‘bury your head in the sand and everything will be all right’ sort of attitude. Anet should be canvassing disaffected players and those who have left to find out what they did ‘wrong’ that made that huge number of players leave. Instead we have the OP suggesting and being backed up by an Anet employee the exact opposite, to try and create forums that just sing the praises of the game and don’t tolerate any expressions other than blind adoration and obedience.
wvw is bad enough rewards wise (not counting spam 1 guards and eotm here) without having to spend time capping something that no one cares about, won’t defend, and rewards absolutely nothing.
I’d much rather have our underwater playground back.
If I see two people fighting it’s usually fairly clear pretty fast whether it’s a duel or not- if my guy runs towards me looking a bit ill then it’s a gank not a duel.
If I’m on my staff ele then feel free to come help me as I’m being ganked- it’s not built for 1v1.
I think most of the actual developers are working on different games now, which is what happens in a multi title studio.
I’ve given up expecting any changes and anything said so far is just window dressing and crowd appeasement.
Fact is, two years on, same old maps, same old problems, zero changes to address them.
They really missed the boat with gvg and a guild ladder which would have been awesome with 10v10, 15v15 and 20v20 categories with some proper maps. What kept me in gw1 for so long was the gvg and HoH. WWW is just a blobfest with very little skill needed to achieve the best loot drops (spam staff 1..).
Played the first week, then gave it a miss. I’m pretty much on vacation from gw2 for the duration.
