RIP City of Heroes
RIP City of Heroes
Colin Johanson spoke about ANet’s manifesto leading up to and during GW2’s beta program in early 2012.
In June 2012 Nexon invested in NCSoft and became NCSoft’s largest shareholder.
Around this time Crystin Cox, perhaps best known for her work at Nexon with Maplestory’s cash shop, became GW2’s monetization manager.
Is GW2 becoming more like GW1 or Maplestory?
Wrong! She was hired months (3/12) before Nexon purchase their share in NCSOFT (6/12) which was months before the game shipped. So she’s been in charge of the store since before the game went live.
The question you all should be asking is would it be worse, whatever slight you feel the Gem Store is doing to you or what it would be like if the exchange didn’t exist?. If everyone was forced to spend cash to get anything. How many $10 bank slots or $7.50 character slots would you have bought? or ~$1 keys? or $5-10 armor or city outfits?
That’s part of the problem. Imagine you’re Ms Cox, hired away from Nexon to run a cash shop and on day one they tell you players can buy items from the cash shop with in game currency. Basically that throws everything, every trick you know in running a true cash shop out the window. You now can’t make the items too cheap because then everyone will just use in game currency. But you are still stuck with not making them too expensive because then few will be able to buy it. She had to figure out new ways to motivate players into buying gems with cash.
Right now it looks like these little bursts of desirable items nearly all at once to deplete players gold reserves so they are forced to buy gems is the current strategy.

Congrats, you are using either a dual or quad core version of the cores found in the PS4 or XB1 (they have 8 cores), except slower, a lot slower. And the integrated GPU is sadly underpowered for a 3D game engine.
Sorry.

Want hard, use white items and not exotic/ascended.

An accountant, a game dev and a manifesto are shipwrecked on an island.
The manifesto goes “GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill;”
The accountant coughs and at the same time mumbles under his breath “Gem Shop!”
The game dev points to a ship on the horizon and say “Look! We are saved here comes the Titanic!”
Gem Shop isn’t a “trap”, it’s an income model. There was a time when nearly all MMOs were monthly subscriptions. So if not subscription or cash shop what do you suggest? Tip jar?

RIP City of Heroes
Well it’s something I’m not going to test because I like my gems.
RIP City of Heroes
I learned to live with it but honestly. Might as well port to the bank in DR and log there. Easier passing it to the alts.

Usual suspects, turn down/off reflections, shadows, reduce the Character Model Limit and Character Model Quality (this reduces seeing other players and if their character is displayed as a proxy model or not).
Lion’s Arch around the Mystic Forge is simply a terror with this game engine. Other cities are problematic at times but the heart of Lion’s Arch is a frame rate nightmare.
RIP City of Heroes
Gold to Gem rate dropped likely because of the influx of 4000 gem purchases with cash to get Mr Sparkles that were then, at least some, exchanged for gold. It stayed steady because there simply wasn’t anything all that attractive on the exchange since the 11th that hadn’t been bought by those wanting it. Then this weekend sale started and BOOM, rates shoot back up. Unless something new comes available Monday or Tuesday, I will expect that we’ll see the rate stabilize or decay until the Jan 21st patch (baring any new sales).
How many times does it need to be explained that the exchange rate is based on the amount of gold and gems in the exchange and that the exchange was founded with a limited, but initially huge, amount of gems. Without gem sellers the exchange can in theory run out of gems, but as the number of gems decrease, the exchange rate will start to go astronomical which in turn should drive players into selling gems, preferably gems bought with cash.
So when something new and attractive comes on to the market, loads of players cash in gold for gems, which causes the rate to rapidly increase. This leaves players without enought gold to convert to decide if they really want it then they will need to either buy gems with cash, or come to the forums to complain, or both. And as a bonus the exchange rate the other way, gems to gold, also increase and just maybe some players choose to buy gems with cash to get gold. ANet wants cash sales. It’s the purpose of the cash shop.
So all ANet needs to do is cycle through these boom/bust cycles where there isn’t stuff we want on the exchange, in hopes we simply dump our excess gems for gold and then come out with the really popular stuff, catching us without the gems we need to buy these items. Or like what they did this weekend with loads of popular returning items, so many most players simply won’t have enough gems to get everything.
It’s the sad fact of a Cash Shop that you need to drive players to it rather than simply offer the same stuff every day of every month with the occasional new item. Retail learned long ago that limit offers and sales are what drive people through the doors. Honestly how many people here by full price games on Steam? No it’s only during these sales when Steam brings in large amounts of money. Same thing works for our Cash Shop. The only difference is we can “earn” some of our currency in game. And the only “manipulation” is when ANet offers sales on old popular items, discontinue currently popular items or offer something much desired at the Cash Shop.
RIP City of Heroes
When you bring up the trading post with O, it dumps you on the main Gem Shop page where the items were clearly advertised. And after being bitten by one deadline I learned to always check the Promotions page at the Gem Shop to see what might be leaving soon.
At the very least the spike in the Gold to Gem rate should have told you something attractive was being offer.
RIP City of Heroes
But it really suffers with players over NPCs.
RIP City of Heroes
Nodes are updated the same way as spawned critters and wandering NPCs, as you zone in or when you wander toward them, but all of that comes over the relatively low stream of downloaded data ( < 10KB/s ) while playing. Yes theirs a short burst when you first zone in to initialize things but it’s not some dynamic download of content that is being implied by some, just state information.
RIP City of Heroes
Probably not but we aren’t seeing what you are seeing so call the devs “lazy” is incorrect.
RIP City of Heroes
Thank you. I use this because so many color look alike to me if just side by side.
RIP City of Heroes
It’ll come around again someday.
RIP City of Heroes
You only need to look at the gold to gem exchange rate to understand why. It went from 6.77g average to 8.1g in hours because of the pent up desire for those items. And if you don’t have the gems or gold to convert into gems then the only option left is cold hard cash. ANet like cold hard cash.
See how well that works.
RIP City of Heroes
When you are around a fair number of other players the game will be limited by the CPU. What is your frame rate out in the PvE world?
RIP City of Heroes
And it’s the same as you use to log into the forums.

RIP City of Heroes
Buy 800 gems with cash in December will get you the backpack. 4000 gems would get you Mr Sparkles and the backpack. All they said was the reward will be delivered in early January.
RIP City of Heroes
I spent about a five week’s worth of gems (I buy a little every day with gold).

(edited by Behellagh.1468)
Yeah, a little unhappy at the results for 1000 gems. I was planning on parking all my toons there as well. Very disappointing.
So park all your tunes at the bank in DR and it’s a free WP to get there from the Royal Pavilion when it tosses you out if you dump the glow stick of destiny in that bank.
RIP City of Heroes
So all it is (compared to going through the heart of the mists to LA) is skipping a single loading screen? That… is incredibly lame, thanks a lot for letting me know though.
That and it puts just about every type of contact in one spot.
RIP City of Heroes
So you all can’t bother gating back to the PVE world the old fashion way and then get whisked to DR at a click of an item? Have we gotten this lazy?
RIP City of Heroes
Spidy has it at 2G but it all depends on when the samples used in the crafting calculation are taken and how frequent. GW2Spidy shows it’s math and mat costs while GW2TP doesn’t.
RIP City of Heroes
Holiday vacation. Then making a list. Checking it twice. Actually two lists (since there were two items, each with their own trigger point). So that gives them two weeks before the next LS event to test the reward script and let it loose on both lists.
RIP City of Heroes
Listen City of Heroes had P2P trades that were fairly bulletproof. But it was in the game because a trading post … consignment house … wasn’t added until they had a crafting system which was year 3 of the game.
Not sure if it’s continuing existence contributed to the hyper inflation or just a side effect of rarity creating behavior that caused farming which netted a lot of money when you were looking for a specific item. We routinely had players that had to be creative how they stored their money because they had hit the bank’s 2 billion cap.

No, the TP is probably the largest gold sink in the game and the ability to keep the money supply under control is paramount. That’s why you can’t opt out.
RIP City of Heroes
Name another item, not skin, that you can withdraw multiple times? I can’t think of any.
RIP City of Heroes
Yes but back then (your link) it was only 300 gems, so 2 weeks. This new one 1000 gems. It better be permanent.

I simply enjoy it. It’s a vacation home. I still have not done all the heart quests more than once or got all the zones explored more than once. I’m on only my 2nd character and she hasn’t even gotten to Orr yet. I have only 2 of the 3 orders and haven’t done all of the dungeons yet even on story.
Not everyone chews through all the content, professions, races, weapon skills in a matter of months. In a game where you don’t pay monthly, why the rush?
RIP City of Heroes
LA is great for testing you CPU performance. It’s less dangerous than a WvW zerg. It has very little to do with your GPU settings.
Pick a perch somewhere in your starting area to play with your graphic settings. Find a mix that you like in both “pretty” and frame rate and accept that frame rate will go into the crappy in cities, WvW, and boss events and learn to quickly turn down other character quality.

What is preventing another owner of Dusk from offering it at less than 800g. He knows people are willing to pay 500g. He could come along and offer it at say 600g and see if someone is willing to pony up the extra 100g over their 500g bid. Because in theory the guy with the 800g Dust wants it to sell, they didn’t post it as a tease to all us poor people.
And I actually think this is happening and we simply never have a chance to see it. Right now GW2TP samples roughly every 20 minutes, GW2Spidy even less frequently. There could be a lot of transactions of high price items that we never notice because they happen in the sampling gaps and what we end up seeing is the too high offer and too low bid persisting.

Here’s the unbranded version.
RIP City of Heroes
Two things then.
1st the TP is actually a web browser so you need to make sure it’s not being blocked by a firewall (some 3rd party firewalls block all net access from apps without user permission). The name of the browser is Awesomium.
2nd is to flush it’s cache. Not as simple as it sounds. Read this post.

That’s all I have. If neither works submit a ticket to support.

Agreed. However the game is handling other players around you, it has serious scaling problems.
RIP City of Heroes
Are you running on a Mac or PC?

Because every two weeks they add something new. True they take most of it away 4 weeks later but it’s not like the game’s been static. Also they have said to expect more permanent content in the living stories and that could include new races, areas, and professions.
RIP City of Heroes
Finnway I’m well versed in NCSOFT’s quarterly reports and I’ve never seen them list copies of any game they’ve sold (well they did at one time list accounts in GW for a while since it didn’t have monthly subscriptions).
Those numbers you are quoting are income numbers in millions of South Korean Won. That’s roughly $150 million USD in 2012 and $80 million USD in the first nine months of 2013 and that includes game and gem sales. ANet announced the 3 million number mid Jan 2013 and 3.5 million at the one year anniversary in the end of August.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/colin-johanson-on-guild-wars-2-in-the-months-ahead/
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-wars-2-the-first-year/
Of course new game sales are huge with a game comes out and around the first holiday period as long as the game is still considered “new” and is still popular. Seeing a number of new players in game now that this holiday season is over plus the sale on the digital download version sold a few more copies of the game but I wouldn’t expect them to break 4 million until next anniversary. Unless they release a paid expansion that requires the original game since that would drum up interest.
Don’t forget, MMO gamers in general have been trained to max level, burn through content ASAP and flitter off to the next new shinny MMO so interest wains quickly on a game that’s over a year old and isn’t called WoW.
Edit: The $80 million in 2013 is only the first 9 months of 2013.

Except SAN the quality of salvage kit changes the ratios. A BLSK gives you more than a master/mystic kit does. Also if you do it to ectos you should do it to the standard materials you are getting in which case it becomes easy to estimate the salvage cost of any salvageable item which will likely fix a price for every item. The advantage of a variable amount of mats including ectos is it makes the value of an item “fuzzy”. And sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised and hit the “jackpot” and other times you come up short. Salvaging items should be speculative.
I’ve been keeping track for a while now. In 769 rares I salvaged since I started, the ratio I’ve been getting is about 40% to 45% to 7.5% to 7.5% for 0,1,2 and 3 ectos with master/mystic kits which comes out to 0.825 per.
