Hey guys, I played for several months at release, and every few months following for several reasons. Anyway, I REALLY want to jump back in and do some dungeons but there are some things that used to discourage me from doing dungeons and I was wondering if there has been a change since then. I logged on to see that the LFG tool still seems useless for dungeons, and the few that are there for AC or CoF are Zerkers Only. Is there something I’m missing? It can’t be that brutally difficult to find a dungeon group right?

Make your own group, it will fill up quick.

Also congrats, you can read LFG descriptions. You’re already better than most people in the game.

Just read what you are saying and I quote: "since getting a precursor pretty much means you got your legendary. " If I already have the legendary why would I need to get the precursor? Does this make any sense?

So you reversed the statement? wow, talk about desperate.

Except it’s not as you craft or buy a legendary and you find or MF a precursor so acquisition isn’t synonymous. You can’t craft a precursor and you can’t throw items into the MF and get a legendary.

Difficulty to acquire is maybe synonymous. Disparity between supply and demand certainly. But not acquisition.

I don’t count pennies.

On the topic of context, if you were able to follow you would know what I was talking about, since getting a precursor pretty much means you got your legendary. Anyway arguing about semantics is not really an issue, darkspirit just needed something to poke at because he ran out.

On the topic of acquisition precursor is synonymous to legendary,

You should check out the meaning of the word “synonymous” because what you said is totally wrong again. Acquiring a legendary is a lot more costly than simply acquiring its precursor, so how can they be “synonymous”?

I give up trying to explain to you why acquiring the precursor that you want in the Mystic Forge is based on LUCK and why you don’t need big numbers if you are lucky enough.

RNG systems are not designed to be fair based on the amount of hard work one puts in, so don’t even pretend that they are. If RNG systems were fair, there would not have been so much frustrations over them.

Synonymous
(of a word or phrase) having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or phrase in the same language.
“aggression is often taken as synonymous with violence”
closely associated with or suggestive of something.
“his deeds had made his name synonymous with victory”

Also, Context – because you are selective when it comes to information.

Stay in school, maybe some literature and statistics may help.

2 words: trading post

So besides arguing semantics got anything else? seems like you;re running out. Your arguments of luck does not have anything that suggests supporting topics either; not even a definition AND perspective of “fair”.

What contradiction. FYI not everyone is meant to obtain a legendary, a lot of people don’t bother or just quit.

Or they simply wait for ANet to lower the cost of acquiring a precursor (not legendary), which is the point of this topic. But of course, you never bother to read the thread title of any thread you argue on and keep insisting on going OT.

On the topic of acquisition precursor is synonymous to legendary, and because you apparently need to be spoon-fed the TP cost is fine because not everyone is meant to have one, also it is based on market forces meaning people still buy them and new precursors are constantly being generated.

You are either ignorant of how the mystic forge work or you are too dumb to understand how it works.

It works through LUCK, not hard work. The mystic forge doesn’t care if you have worked your kitten off to transmute thousands of rares but still cannot get the precursor that you want. Yet some other lazy player who doesn’t bother, got it on his first try.

Well obviously someone doesn’t know how big numbers and statistics work, and it isn’t me. Again, because you need to be spoon-fed MF is probability.

Stay in school, some people need it more than others.

Not everyone is meant to have a legendary.

Work hard (grind all day), or better – work smart.

Work hard? Grind all day? For the dumb luck mystic toilet to grant you a precursor? How about those players who got a precursor within 10 tries at the mystic forge? Therefore, Luck > Hard work in this case.

I have to question the wisdom of investing development cost for creating an entire new gear tier just for a small minority of the player population, while the rest have to stagnate at exotic by level 80.

What would be a more logical assumption in my point of view is that: “Everyone is meant to have a legendary eventually, but some rich lucky few would reach that goal earlier than others”.

Talking about RNG? Go buy a lottery ticket. Sorry I don’t do that because I work smart.

Some people are lucky that;s life – deal with it and stop being jealous, work for what you want and don’t rely on dumb luck. Welcome to life.

I am not jealous, I simply proved you wrong.

Contrary to your comment, it doesn’t take hard work to get a precursor, all it takes is dumb luck. RNG systems are not designed to be fair in the first place, so don’t even pretend that they are.

Uhh no you didn’t.

First statement “Not everyone is meant to have a legendary.”

Supporting statement “Work hard (grind all day), or better – work smart.”
That’s an approach on how to get one, no one plans to get lucky.

So read that, let it sink in. How did you prove me wrong again?

First statement wrong. Because: “I have to question the wisdom of investing development cost for creating an entire new gear tier just for a small minority of the player population, while the rest have to stagnate at exotic by level 80.
What would be a more logical assumption in my point of view is that: “Everyone is meant to have a legendary eventually, but some rich lucky few would reach that goal earlier than others”.”

Second statement wrong. Because: “Work hard? Grind all day? For the dumb luck mystic toilet to grant you a precursor? How about those players who got a precursor within 10 tries at the mystic forge? Therefore, Luck > Hard work in this case.”

RNG systems do not reward hard work, they only reward those with dumb luck. Saying otherwise is like telling people that if they work hard enough they would win the lottery which is ridiculous!

“I have to question the wisdom of investing development cost for creating an entire new gear tier just for a small minority"

and

“Everyone is meant to have a legendary eventually, but some rich lucky few would reach that goal earlier than others”

What contradiction. FYI not everyone is meant to obtain a legendary, a lot of people don’t bother or just quit, sometimes their expenses are too much that they cannot gather enough to buy one. But hey, you’re an expert of how society reacts with luxury marketed items so you must know your stuff.

So if you can’t be lucky which probability dictates you wont be, you just sit down and keep hoping to be lucky or do you do something about it? Which one is the idiot and which one has a higher chance of getting what he wants? It’s work hard OR work smart, sometimes both then buy it straight from the TP. If you prefer then “manufacture” it, in a big numbers perspective you can manufacture them, but if it is feasible to do so is another question.

Do you work hard/smart to win the lottery? No(unless you rig it) , and that’s a dumb analogy. However, you can achieve an equal amount of value through work.

How many players has obtained a precursor in around 10 tries? So because a few obtained it that way, in the case of precursors luck > work? what? In what perspective did this conclusion come from? It certainly is not from statistics or anything mathematical.

The AI can provide dynamic approach to encounters rather than a procedure.

Would you suggest linking movement to some form of RNG if it isn’t procedural?

When I said “procedural” I meant how we run dungeons – It feels like a procedure rather than fighting. A well developed AI would alleviate a side of this and it doesn’t need to be overly complicated. It also needs movement as a complement.

Also yes, some movements and decisions could involve a little RNG. Example would be like if boss is pinned to a wall it puts it in a defensive or cornered state and has an increased chance for some options such as AoE launch/simple sidestep/directional rush attack. With these examples if he opts for aoe launch players can dodge and punish while sidestep is purely defensive repsitioning, directional rush is a combination of both.

Also the need for flanking enemies and positioning (if bots can detect terrain I’m sure you guys can do it better); put them beside cover and a little spread and you could see a fresh take on combat.

I think there’s a challenge aspect to programming mobs to incentivize flanking. It certainly exists in game. (High lvl mossman incentivizes you to flank while you melee him.) Do you have any specific mechanics that would be part of a mob mechanic that would encourage flanking?

I think you misunderstood this one, I’m mainly focusing about the AI and mob behavior and not players. The goal is for players to react differently, and in-due time might have a macro strategy but the fighting itself would involve subtle individual decisions depending on mob patterns.

I mentioned bots and how they detect terrain because it can add an element of depth for mob AI and their decision on how or where to position themselves. Imagine if ranged mobs “accidentally” set up their positions where their flanks are covered to avoid getting hit with guardian GS5 all at the same time, the guard can think quick and find a sweet spot that captures them all or the party can split to avoid being aoe’d.

With your example of players flanking a boss, I can think of a few things that can provide incentive to this but not one single mechanic. It;s more of an approach on how to design bosses to make it less RTS-like and more action-like. It deals with decision making which also ties into basic fighting movements. I don;t want to get into it right now since it;s going to be long.

Less gimmicks, more mobs who know how to fight (does not mean 1 shot difficulty – encounters can be casual but still enjoyable). It’s about time we have mobs and bosses that does not have primitive AI (see enemy>run straight and spam all skills). On replay value a lot of it can come from bosses and encounters when done properly, I can name a few games that only has bosses and does it well.

I think “gimmicks” can be a very general turn. You could say that the Molten Berserker’s Shockwave is a gimmick, and the Firestorm’s AoE fire circles are also gimmicks, but when you put them together, they add a dimension of difficulty that each one alone couldn’t do.

I think maybe you’re looking for something that has extreme depth of combat, yes? “Easy to learn, hard to master.” Recognizing the shockwave is easy, but being able to dodge the shockwave while worrying about the firestorm makes it more challenging.

I used the term gimmick very loosely. An example of it could be the clockheart in aetherpath and the hologram + electric floors; sometimes it’s fine i guess but it shouldn’t be the focus at all. Worst gimmick is breachmaker LS boss, that was just terrible.

Berserker and firestorm is ok in my book except berserker’s animation is terrible and not indicative of the range on where his fists land, he looks like a child flailing his arms with a phantom range; not very intuitive.

You’re right with the “easy to learn, hard to master” but I don’t think it needs extreme depth in combat, maybe extreme in comparison to what we have now. One element I keep coming back to is zoning (like in fighting games/good action games). A basic element is maintaining your step-in reach and knowing when to throw a few jabs or when it is worth throwing a heavy attack. The amateur will be very cautious and sometimes the window to attack is short that he cannot capitalize on it maybe due to slow reaction or bad positioning (too far), the skilled player or experienced will punish all the misses the boss makes and step out just in time to avoid the next incoming attack (basically a counter and backstep, or sidestep then launch another attack).

As abstract as this is I hope I made sense. To make it more concrete I would need to spend a lot of time and provide something similar to a draft.

Stop me.

Attacking stacking by itself is a dumb idea and adds more cheap gimmicks. It isn’t even the problem by itself. Want better combat? 1 word: zoning.

Room by room gating adds to linearity of the game (aetherpath). It can work in other games, but the way anet uses it and your literal interpretation is undesirable; forced gating without context and used outside as a complementing role is a bad idea.

Bad ideas are bad – this is the point.

good point with people going around the duel ignore, but in pvp we do not get our race-specific skills.

charr wont get (battle cry) and Asura wont get (technobabble) and so on.

Most of the race-specific things are kind of inconvenient anyway, though, with the exception of [become the snow leopard], which is good…for…running away…

I overlooked those. Also bear form rush on that 1 guy who decides to afk on a wall.

Still I don;t think that justifies the cost.

Bread.7516

Don’t worry guys i got this one!

If you don’t shell out for the gems to get your own custom games, you gotta put up with other people interrupting your 1v1s.

In custom pvp, you are limited only to the sPvP maps, where as in the open world you would get the crazy variety of awesome environments.

You can also kill each other pretty easily in sPvP, which forced you to have to sit through a respawn. Open world duels are a battle to 1 hp then it ends.

You cannot use your standard, PvE/WvW toon in sPvP, you don’t get all of your abilities, and you don’t get to use food. You also don’t get all of the same gear.

It’s not nearly as accessible as open world duels. You have to port to a different area. This is a big difference if you are just killing time before a dungeon/world event and you want to have a little spar in front of the instance portal. It would also bump you out of the whatever part of the megaserver you are on if you have to rejoin the area.

in sPvP you must play a lvl 80 with everything unlocked. For a new player this is overwhelming. Having the ability to test your limited skill set as you are leveling, against peers via open world duels is huge, IMO. In definitely lowers the barrier to entry for PvP, making it more accessible and easier to digest. The lack of this may contribute the animosity we see between the PvE and PvP crowds.

and, personally, i liked passing by the gates of ironforge in WoW, to stop and watch the people that would duel out there for a little bit. I wasn’t invested enough to port to another zone just to see it, but to be able to watch for a little bit as i was passing through was just another nice little touch that made WoW the success it is.

As stated by the other guy you can buy custom arenas with gold. Also the cost isnt even that high.

1v1 duels mainly use environments as LoS which are present in tpvp maps, you don;t really flank/high ground or use breaching strategies so open world environment only serves a minor aesthetic purpose.

Respawn is an issue? really?

Standard PvE STATS and food – does it matter (rhetorical)? tpvp is a level playing field with no cost. Also, you do get all your abilities, and now you even get to use the skin of your PVE armor. Play with skills not with stats.

Basically very minor things that are barely an excuse to cover the costs of implementing the system. Understand that they do not have a switch ready made that they can just put a localized hostility tag where it only detects between the 2 duelists. Also, those annoying “duel me duel me duel me” people who don;t respect the “ignore duel requests”.

Loot is a reward too.

I disagree with, ‘rewards require so little damage […] even in nomads u can still get full credit easily.’. GW2 rewards only damage. If you’re going to make small events with zerg and you’ll rez and heal isntead of doing damage you get only bronze or silver medal (for few hits).

Necro AoE-spam will get more bags of loot than support role with boons, healing and rezzing players.

I disagree with this unless it;s all you do, which the bulk would be ressing players because the amount of support and heals you dish out is not that many where the rest of the time you could have dealt some damage rather than just ressing everyone.

Even if you pop all your support skills there should be enough time to deal damage and get the gold credit.

Basically look at it from the view point of how combat medics work in the field, they still participate in the field where they actually still shoot with the guns they carry -surgeons stay in camp.

If you;re looking for a dedicated healer role then this game explicitly tells you that there is no such thing. If you’re looking for support roles within a team then they already exist, optimized groups just make do with the bare minimum to increase efficiency.

Honestly all melee strikes and even bow firing should not let players move like 2 kids in a long coat.

It’s just not right when your lower body is disconnected with the upper body, whatever strike you deliver uses your lower body, and firing arrows (if anyone had experience on archery) needs a certain amount of stability and not running around at full speed left to right.

Better mobs and encounters. Foundation of a good game.
power creep = garbage. They already slapped everyone in the face with ascended.

And no, they should not resort to gimmicks like they always do.

Zerker build not the only dmg build!!!

i hit twice as much with my condition ranger then i do with my zerker chars.
Those that are making squads and only accepting zerker builds aren’t very smart ….

1.9k toughness and 24k hp (more survavibility equals more dmg!

is this a joke? inexperienced or delusional. You’re not even specced for full damage condi.

People coming up with conclusions without proper testing or data aren’t very smart

Potential solution for stacking

Then how does bodyblocking improve the game? I have yet to see one reason why bodyblocking will improve the game (inb4 no more stacking, that’s not a reason, that’s what you want to achieve) in case I haven’t been completely blind.

Actually i;d like to see it in wvw because it lacks formations and real life imitations of combat strategy. Though if they do this AoE limit must go away (it wasn;t welcome anyway) Also I like seeing idiots fail and stumble on each other because they’re careless.

PvE though, there are more pressing issues to address than this.

The whole irony of this is the diehard stackers tend to be the ones that I’m having to peel off the dungeon floor because they haven’t learned what x or y mob actually does.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

If you honestly can’t figure out the why by now, then you’re never going to get it and frankly, I’m already tired of repeating myself to people like you that don’t give two kittens, anyway.

If you honestly can’t figure out why stacking in itself is not the problem then you need to think on why this isn’t an issue with most action games before finding “solutions”.

i’ve played a game with collision and this is really a bad stuff, my solution about stacking is if player will stack on some corner or wall for more than 5 sec, boss will become unattackable… so if u wanna damage him u have to spread out

terrible idea

but this thread is not really about inflation? Did he even mention inflation?

Mat prices, crafting, new players – part of OP’s issues.
Inflation and economics, it’s all connected, who would’ve guessed?!

Otherwise the argument to the concepts of good/bad is a worse topic with no end.

connected is not the same thing.
Essentially his premise is that it is hard for players to be competitive in terms of achieving goals without playing the TP, because its gains are way above other methods of play for a similar time frame.

Inflation is about prices generally going up, if it was caused by inflation, a new or regular player wouldnt have that much issues, because the value of everything would be going up similarly.

inflation most directly effects savings, not earnings versus what you can do with them.

We all know not all jobs pay the same. Why is there a need to be competitive (rate of income between jobs) when all the needs are easily obtained (BiS gear)?

You know, what I’ve never seen? someone defining (or just trying) what a good/bad economy (macro/micro aims) then basing their arguments off that.

The theory that demand drives the price and economy is fine can be applied to any mmorpg ever existed.

Doesn t prove economy is healthy anyway, nor that flipping is a good thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell's_teapot

Yet those with biased/negligible amount of data, studies, evidence still push that it is a “bad” economy.

lol, people tell people their theories and beliefs are wrong based on some one elses philosophical beliefs?

You also compare the a philosophy based on religion, to an idea of the economy, which one lives in and interacts with, and has much data, and reasons to form as valid an opinion as anyone else here?

The concept speaks of when you have a belief that seems unlikely based on the current knowledge set, versus a very likely one. The idea that economy is good (for the average player) is no more logically well founded than the idea that it is bad.

The best argument one can propose on this matter is that neither side has much evidence to support thier claims.

In the case of a lack of evidence, you generally rely on other factors such as reason, experiments, and even anecdotal evidence (which is actually better than no evidence) and philosophy.

What the…
The 2 statements only touch each other with a tangent. Do you not understand the concept of russell’s teapot? All you got from this is religious applications of arguments?…….

With lack of evidence you go for numbers and statistics, if you can;t conduct a proper study then don;t bother coming up with a conclusion – simple as that.

The man with the data has told us that gw2 inflation is very well controlled, either believe that or conduct your own study.

So to people with crackpot theories – show data or go home.
