I stopped doing unranked because I can’t guarantee Courtyard. TDM mode and build savers wanted!! Some players need to to l2p.

This x1000. I use to learn new classes in unranked until I kept getting sky hammer and courtyard over and over. So I just go ranked after a a little time in one of those public join servers

I used to main guardian. Played it exclusively for the first half year of the games release. Despite the bugs, crap traits/lines that haven’t been fixed, weapon sets, etc.. I stuck with it because overall it still fit the theme I wanted to play – heavy armor, supportive front line like a knight/paladin.

I quit guard when they announced dragon hunter, no regrets there.. moved all my ascended armor sets and legendary to my warrior. Then they make a push for condi warrior (the berserker). While it’s not as utterly disappointing as this backline fairy of a ranger, it still doesn’t quite fit what MOST of us GUARDIAN MAINS were looking for.

Unfortunately guys (and girls), we have to hop that revenant will fill the hole in our hearts. xD Until then, I suggest swapping to warrior or ele for now. They are much better “guardians” in my opinion.

Guards are still amazing. Reflects, blinds, blocks, condi clense, perms protection for fractals if needed, stability, AND team wide quickness every 30 seconds. Not many classes offer that much team support while doing good damage.(ignoring dragon hunter of course)

I still find it odd that one of the only classes without a 25% move speed passive bonus is supposed to have a kiting based elite specialization now; this functionality needs to find its way into the class somehow.

Wouldn’t the absence of a 25% speed trait tell you it’s NOT intended to be a kiting build? Wouldn’t the presence of not 1 but 2 “you cannot move or you will interrupt this cast” skills make even suggesting its a kiting spec sorta laughable?

I could just as easily point out the knockback, leap, Pure of Sight (more damage to distant enemies) trait, and addition of snare mechanics to the specialization. The Dragonhunter is clearly meant to maintain range (even the chanelled skills are evidence of this, as the self-root makes using them in close range not smart), and in any non-zerg situation, that means kiting – not to mention that kiting is usually a large part of getting things to actually run into your traps. The absence of a 25% speed trait doesn’t tell me that it’s not a kiting build – it tells me that the Dragonhunter doesn’t have all the tools it needs to do its job.

Or, that Anet doesn’t know what to do with this new traitline and we are getting the shortened of the stick. I would have been fine with mace offhand and some new stun centric build. But no… we get bear bow guards

Y we have aegis at 50+ sec cd hooray

The passive on aegis is a 40s cooldown and with Communal Defenses, you can give aegis to allies every 15s when blocking an attack via any method.

(edit: 40, not 20 (which is the duration). Still much less than 50 and the rest remains true)

With retreat and VoC, you get 2 nice party wide blocks that is generally enough for like 90% of dungeon content.

Then if you add our blind spam and wall of reflect and shield of avenger, then you talking some serious damage mitigation. Oh and just for kittens throw in purging flame and 3 more condi removed party wide by our virtue. Guardian will not be replaced

Then stability and quickness… we too good!

Shoulders should be available from level1.

You will lose a fair amount of sustain and control. The hammer pin is much easier to dodge than the sceptor pin. You also can’t keep pressure vs an ele who keeps putting fire on the floor without your ranged weapon. You lose your 3 attack block from focus#5 , condi clear/blind from focus#4. Your big 5k burst attack from focus exploding as well as the symbol from the scepter you can place at distance to distrupt a rez without putting yourself at harms reach. The things hammer brings is a blast finisher for might stacking and the ring of warding for position control. Hammer fits better for a bunker swap in a map like khylo for mid control. But, like others said, it can be used. Just keep in mind the trade offs.c

It’s not a strawman argument if I quote you verbatim on something you said. Unless you don’t know what a strawman argument is, which at this point is looking very likely.

You are shifting the focus of the argument to an irrelevant thing. You are disregarding my actually argued points, to focus on something that has no baring on what we were discussing. There you go.

At worst, you get Guardians who use their shouts to heal themselves and waste the effects when they are actually needed. At best, you just get a decrease in overall efficiency from the wasted trait points.

Again with this same tired and weak talking point. What is with this “wasted trait points” thing? People like you just assert things without substantiation. How about you actually show how the trait points are wasted and what would you not consider a waste before you blindly assert things you haven’t demonstrated?

You do realize there’s 2 weapon slots for guardians right?

Who ever said you need to use the staff at all while fighting? You can either empower every 20 secs for 12 stacks of might to the team or you can save it as an emergency heal with AH in case you get low and heal is on cd. Or you can simply choose not to use it while in combat and use your primary weapon. Simply saying using a staff makes you bad just shows how simplistic and unsubstantiated your views are.

Its like you didn’t even read my post.. I clearly put GS+Sword/Focus or Hammer+… You know what.. It doesn’t even matter.

Next time anyone asks a question if their build is cool. I’ll say yes because Obtena said so. Since anything is cool. Just run it. Don’t even ask for advice here. No reason to learn how to optimize your guard. Just run whatever the heck you want.

any guardian who knows what he’s doing always carries extra staff in inventory or as secondary.

If you use a staff to skip, how does that help you in a fight? We aren’t talking about out of combat or running to the next spot. In combat, you should… Should use either gs+sword/focus or Hammer+GS or Sword/Focus or Use staff to drop line of warding then go hammer and never swap back until you get ooc.

Staff is only used to fight or swap to in combat by bad players…. But if you don’t care about optimal play, then please ignore my posts.

But the heals are so pathetically small from it…. Its not even worth it. AH shines with a staff in PvP, since you can bunker hard with it. But in PvE, you simply should not run a staff. AH is just weak in dungeons. It is a waste of trait points.

Here is what AH does. It makes bad players think that running more shouts than necessary is a good idea. Then those same players, seem to use the shouts as either ways to heal themselves, or with soldier runes only use shouts to remove condi which is silly.

AH promotes bad game play. If you need a shout on your bar, then do it. But it doesn’t require AH, since it is a giant waste of valuable trait points.

If you want protection, get a hammer and give perma protection. 5 seconds on a 24 second cool down isn’t anything to brag about.

[Guide] DPS Guardian for PVE

in Guardian

Posted by: Cat Has Ducks.1982

Cat Has Ducks.1982

I run dungeons: AC, CM, SE mostly.

Don’t get me wrong. Consecrations are often useful, but they are also often on cooldown. The 10% bonus DPS from elusive power is up whenever you’re under 100% endurance.

With the version of the max hammer DPS I use, I lose some uptime on consecrations (when I slot them), but I gain a 10% damage multiplier for the hammer (and it’s symbol of protection), and two 10% damage multipliers for the sword. I also pick up utility with focus. Basically, more hammer DPS and swapping the utility of extra consecration uptime for Shield of wrath blocks and zealot’s defense reflects.

I think, DPS aside, the added uptime for WoR provided by MoC << than WoR without MoC + Shield of wrath blocks and zealot’s defense reflects.

But utility aside, this is a DPS thread, and my point was that the change should increase DPS.

This isn’t just a DPS thread though. Its a DPS guardian thread. It’s about bringing the dps while bringing what a guardian should bring.

Example highest DPS is 20/30/20/0/0 build. But the preferred is 20/25/0/0/25 because it brings the proper utilities for the team. Also, you really shouldn’t have that low endurance damage buff that often with vigor and the hammer’s long AA chain. You are up right most of the fights with that bad boy.

Having said that, you will appreciate the MoC more when you get into high level fractals and arah. That 20% for MoC is stupidly strong. Its 20% longer duration and 20% shorter CD. <3 <3

Um I did say pve in my post. You just took the first part of my post out of context and ignored everything else.

Consecrations are situational and do not synergize with traits while shouts synergize with AH as well as for example soldier runes and has a wider range and do not require you to stack inside the circle.

WOR and SOA I slot in for various encounters but for 90% of the other fights full shouts work far better with AH.

My point, is AH is useless in dungeons to have since shouts are second class citizens in PVE. The only shout that is cool for any encounter in retreat, the only other team one is SYG which is super situational. SYS is really good for solo’ing with 25 in virtues, which AH builds generally don’t invest 25 in virtues since they aren’t worried about doing damage.

tl;dr : In PvE consecrations > shouts. AH = poop

Wrong. Shouts are the best group support skills a guard has.

The fact is AH is probably the most viable and consistent pve build out there for guards.

FOR PVE ONLY.

No No No! Consecrations are best group support that guardians have. Wall of Reflect and Purging Flames are amazing. With Wall of Reflect being the show stopper that alone makes consecrations the best.

I generally only have 1 shout on my bar, if any at all. For fractals WoR, SOA, PF, and retreat are what takes turns on my bar. With Hallowed ground and SYG being situationally swapped in.

A full shout guardian is almost as bad a full shout warrior in PVE. Take that shhht and put in on the bench.

Arah P1, second skip.

Staff#4 swiftness -> GS#3 leap(or sword blink) past first mob of risen -> Dodge -> Retreat -> Judge’s Intervention -> If hurt heal or if condi then cleanse, if not -> keep running to GS#3 leap past ooze field

In general. You need 1 condi clear(Don’t need this if you have 20 in virtues, JI is better), retreat, and the 3rd is up to you. Stability if the run requires it, like TA Forward or Arah P2.

Remember with your virtue of courage, you generally have a free aegis, so you can have 3 free hits to keep you out of combat. Free aegis -> Retreat -> VOC (and renewed focus if need be, invuln plus another aegis!)

Personal note, I prefer to skip with GS and staff. But most use GS +Swrod/Focus for the extra mobility on sword#2.
