Marjory developing into Mary Sue?

She’s a great detective, she’s a good necromancer, and she knows a lot about poison… does that really sound so crazy?

Well, the previous event when she showed up made me think she was rather poor necromancer, with no abilities whatsoever. This is the first time someone mentioned she’s competent at anything.
Her being smarter than Logan did not say much – after all, pretty much anyone is smarter than Logan.

(just to be clear – i agree with you that she’s no Mary Sue. I just don’t consider her one for a different reason).

She is a bad Necromancer. She got owned during the first instance fights.

So did Trehearne.

I don’t really get why they tacked on 5 gold to the purchase cost. 250 spores would have been plenty as an introduction, and even then I’d still might go for paying the skill points rather than grinding up spores.

Now some people say that 25 skill points is worth way more than 5 gold, but right now I have so many skill points I don’t know what to do with them all.

Since once again we have achievements that involve doing the WvW jumping puzzles, I would like to remind some people of a bit of common courtesy.

If someone /waves to you, it means they are not looking to fight. If you wave to them, it means you are not looking for a fight. Please try to respect that some people may just wish to get through the zone and get out.

I know people will say that this is a PvP zone, so they should expect a fight. I would just like to see fighting that doesn’t involve pushing off ledges, hiding behind corners, or general camping. If you feel like getting into some 1v1s or 2v2s, the very beginning of Obsidian Sanctum can be a great place for it.

If I see someone in a jumping puzzle and they don’t bother me, I won’t bother them. Outside in true WvW though, anything goes.

Ascended Shortbow Stats

in Thief

Posted by: Coldin.2840

Knights shortbow is the best, since shortbow is only useful for running away and spamming blast finishers.

Why not use PTV then?

You get nothing from the Vitality when you swap to it during combat, and its sub stat Toughness, while Knights is main stat Toughness, which is the only thing that matters IMO.

I don’t know. Still think I would prefer main stat power over main stat toughness. If I was going to take Toughness main stat, I’d probably shoot for Cavalier’s.

Okay. Thanks for the advice guys. I’ll probably still mull it over for the next few days, but it sounds like I’ll be just fine going for a Berserker shortbow since I don’t spec for condition damage anyway. Probably I’ll go for the pistol next, since I’m really just lacking the empyreal shards.

Though, I wonder if Valkyrie may be a better choice on a shortbow for the extra Vitality while in a zerg. Probably not since it would only get me an extra couple hits at best.

You know one thing that would make me like this meta-achievement a lot more? Is if the various WvW Dailies counted to it some amount.

Like say every 5 WvW dailies I did counted towards a repeatable deed that increased my contribution into the meta.

I’ll certainly get a few of the various WvW Season 1 achievement done, but I really don’t know if it will be possible for me to get 15 of them completed. Not that I really mind working on all these deeds. They’re actually a fun way to decide what I’ll do in WvW on a given day. But it would be nice if the meta-deed was in grasp of a casual WvW player.

So, I have all my materials together to make an ascended huntsman weapon.

Since I use Shortbow as my secondary weapon in pretty much all my builds and when in zergs, I figured Shortbow would be my best bet as my first Ascended. The problem I’m having is that I can’t decide what stat combo to go with.

Typically, I run a mix of Beserker and Valkyrie gear, but the Shortbow would benefit from some condition damage. My current exotic bow is Carrion, which I feel works fine, but it’s likely that the extra Condition Damage isn’t actually helping my bleeds and poison enough.

So, just wondering what other thieves would go for Shortbow stats? (Or should I forget about the shortbow and get an ascended pistol instead, even though it’s my off-hand?)

Hey there

This is by design. The mad king tower now has a 15 minute timer and you get a point each time you make it to the top in that 15 minute window.

When it gets to about 1:30 seconds or so left on the clock, it will not start another round, because otherwise there is a chance you would be in the puzzle when it resets and that is no fun ><. It will then announce the winner(s) and start another 15 minute round when the timer hits 0.

Hope this clears things up

Okay….but why was the design changed like this?

Coldin.2840

I don’t mind if it took a bit of a grind to get one, as long as that grind came through doing various Halloween activities for the Candy Corn Cobs. But assuming you bought 15000 candy corn to turn into cobs, you would have to buy nearly 150 Gold worth of candy corn. A cob itself is right around 9 Gold right now.

Maybe we’ll see those prices drop, but I’m not so sure when Candy Corn nodes are less plentiful than before.

I’m not sure what Arenanet was thinking with this one.

It’s 1,000 candy corn to make one Candy Corn Cob. And it takes 15 Candy Corn Cobs to get a 20 slot Halloween Pail.

At those costs, it’s far easier to just farm 10 gold and buy a regular 20 slot box outright.

If you miss the first hit, you are going to be rooted in place, ready to be burst down.

You dont seem to get the point? Even if you’re rooted, you cannot be bursted since you evade ALL attacks during the ‘channel’ … And even if you miss the first hit, does not automatically let you miss all other hits, which do massive AE cleave dmg. Get your facts straight before lamenting.

i agree, the evasion must be removed, the root can stay !

That’s very silly.

The whole reason it even has that evade is because it roots the play during the animation. The evade doesn’t cover the entire animation either, leaving the thief vulnerable at the tail end of the attack. The damage is decent, but easily avoided as long as you’re not right in front of the AOE cone. A thief properly spamming backstabs is going to do more damage really.

I’m actually surprised people still complain about Pistol Whip when it’s already been nerfed heavily in the past and rarely outside of PVE.

just like they suck for Tequatl,

Rangers thrive on the turret/turret defense. You shouldn’t be smacking the dragon’s face. Not everybody is going to be a member of the DPS zerg.

Oh? So we’re regulated to turret kitten like necros or ‘finger duty’ because we’re not a real dps class huh? That is bad design.

Even thieves were kind of relegated to finger and turret defense in Tequatl. We have DPS, but not really the stability/shielding/buffs that made us super useful in the DPS zerg unlike Warriors, Guardians, and Elementalists.

I feel sorry for Rangers though. Maybe they could get some traits that let their pets take less damage from AOE sources?

um.. no. a villain is almost always going “fail” in some way. being a villian sue has nothing to do with being infallible. & just because someone is intelligent doesn’t make them able to do everything amazingly with no effort. she DID master everything. finish the courses? who cares. Einstein didn’t excel at everything in college either. (incidentally Anet tried to soften the blow recently by saying she didn’t finish from every college. just that she took a special exam that proved she could. umm.. difference?) being a super, multidimensional genius who has seen all of reality (which they are trying to backpedal on) tried every trade but gave up because they were too easy is not villain 101. It’s “I want this character to be everything & have a sassy pop-culture crazy-girl personality 101”

I still say that people are saying she’s a Villain Sue simply because they do not like the character. Her main super power here is that she’s smart. That’s hardly any different than many other villains.

As I said earlier. She did not master everything. She left before she mastered what she was learning. She learned just enough about the topic before deeming the rest unimportant. Generally, as being a villain sue is a form of wish fulfillment, they actually are intended to be victorious in everything. As it is, she simply has a backstory to flesh out her rather non-committal and non-conformist personality, and give some explanation for why she’s capable of turning the Clockwork Knights into the nightmares. Past that, she’s failed at kidnapping Queen Jenna. She was driven out of pavillion and her captives were rescued. She’s been “beaten” at countless invasions. Most characters discount her as being a crazy loon and while she may be a threat, I don’t see characters treating her unbeatable.

And let’s be fair to Arenanet here. They’re mostly clarifying things, not back-peddling. It was never specifically stated that she completed every college, just that she was able to enter each college. They never said she truly saw the eternal alchemy. They merely implied that she had some kind of other worldly experience, and saw things. It’s never really stated exactly what she saw, but it’s clear that it’s what tipped her over the edge to being completely insane. In fact, one of the asura states that seeing the eternal alchemy is impossible.

So I still think people are taking this Villain/Mary Sue thing a bit too far. Let’s give Arenanet a couple more story updates and see how it goes. I personally think it should be interesting to see how something like Caithe reacts to Scarlet.

Scarlet has not yet proven to be a Mary Sue yet. Just because you don’t like her doesn’t mean she fits that profile. Most of what she has shown is very standard, super smart, egotistical villain.

You must not have read her short story.

She excells at everything, got the most legendary norn blacksmith to want to teach her but refused, got taught by one of the best Iron Legion snipers then ran with the secrets, got into all three asura colleges being the first non-asura to ever do such (and even if the interview with TowerTalk pegged the feat of graduating all three colleges down by explaining she took specialized courses, that’s still a feat that shamed the asura intelligence), and (though countered in the interview mentioned) saw the Eternal Alchemy (now it’s “may have seen but most likely didn’t”).

She has been set up, betrayed, exiled, desired, and she thought nothing of it. She has been pampered by the whole world since day 1 all because she has high IQ. And to top it off she’s disconnected from the Dream of Dreams without the rigorous meditation Soundless need to do.

That sounds very Mary Sue-like to me. And that is why I don’t like her, personally speaking. I don’t think she’s a Villain Sue because I don’t like her; I don’t like her because I think she’s a Villain Sue. The interview helped lower the Villain Sue-ness of her character, but its still there, and worse, it (her background, both story and interview info) isn’t there in game.

No. I read it. She excelled, but always quit early before she truly learned everything. She never mastered blacksmithing. Never mastered potions. Never even mastered all the various asura colleges. The only one she did “master” was weapons. The only kind of Mary Sue esque part of her character appears to be convincing people to teach her. The high intelligence is pretty much just villainy 101, so really should just be disregarded.

As it is, no one really admires her. Her plans have failed at least a couple times. She fell for the Queen Jenna illusion trick. Scarlet really hasn’t ever won unless you count the brief victory at the Queen’s Speech.

A villain sue would be showing us someone who’s a lot more infallible. Someone who always comes out on top of the heroes. So far, she’s mostly just caused a bit of chaos and manages to get away at the end. Still sounds like your basic villain to me. Now, you may not like her because she’s the generic intelligent and insane villain archtype, but that does not make her a Villain/Mary Sue.

At best you’ll have people wanting to do this once a day, that gets people a couple rares. Even then, it’s just the two rares, some dragonite that’s easier to obtain from other sources, and the chance at very rare drops.

People generally will not want to run this multiple times per day with alts, simply because then they are only getting the 1 big chest. Once it becomes more difficult to organize a large force of players to attempt, I do think it will go down. We’ll probably see people still beating him once a week, but this will mainly be big guilds on big servers.

Anyone changing their tune?

Nope.

The teams that are beating him are still very organized groups, all communicating via some sort of VOIP. Some servers are beating him because they managed to get enough people into their main map. Other servers are beating him because a big group decided to guest there. Overflows are beating him because a group took over the overflow for their attempt.

In all cases, the primary things are not changing. A large group or guild specifically dedicated to defeating him managed to get on a map by themselves, and used voice communication to keep everyone focused on the task. That simply will not happen with low population servers, or with your average overflow.

Again, stop throwing around terms you don’t understand.

Thanks for discounting two of my issues as just graphical problems. Personally, I’d mark those up as being part of the artificial difficulty. There’s no reason that those can’t be easier to see. Even the Liadri circles were more clear since they were at least not covered up by another effect, and fell in a pattern.

Avoiding the shockwaves is certainly doable, but there’s still a strange latency at play. Also, when using the stacking method right near his feet, it then becomes nearly impossible to jump or dodge in time

It’s not be all artificial difficulty, but there is enough of it there to add to the overall difficulty.

(Of course, now I’m really just fighting you on this because you had to pull out that annoying phrase. )

Every other world boss got at least the same two changes, and no one’s having a problem with them in those cases.

The bosses that had buffed HP were dying in 2 minutes anyway. In fact, they were dying so quickly that a player attacking them might not even get credit if they did not deal enough damage.

The time limits that were added were mostly to just add a fail condition. I’d argue that they weren’t needed, but for the most part they don’t matter. A group will still bring those bosses down with plenty of time to spare. The time limit did not change anything for them.

The same people that said Liadri was great, while ignoring the flaws in the fight that artificially inflated the difficulty.

I’ve yet to see anything about the new Teq that counts as artificial difficulty, unlike Liadri, which was nothing BUT artificial difficulty.

Stop using terms you don’t understand.

Don’t you Princess Bride me! :P

Things contributing the Artificial Difficulty

1. Poison Clouds that are difficult to see and tick before graphics appear
2. Water Waves that are out of sync with the graphics.
3. Reliance on turrets that could be used by trolls or afk players
4. Tequatl becoming deselected due to his own movement animations.
5. Time Limit which is basically just a DPS check.

There’s also other things that are contributing to a higher difficulty, though I suppose they are not of the traditional artificial difficulty. Overflows consisting of a random assortment of people who may not actually work together. Small servers simply not having enough people to properly fight Teq and work on turrets. AFK players scaling up the event while not contributing. Dead players also scaling up the event. Bad instructions of mechanics, ensuring that a fresh group of players will fail at least once before learning how things work.

It’s actually a bit interesting that if the time limit wasn’t there, or the first phase was easier, we’d probably see a lot more people beating Tequatl. Once the laser hits him once, a group can almost deal enough damage to knock him right into the next phase.

In any case, there are a lot of factors outside of your average players control. Which is why most people that are beating him are either forming a big coordinated group on an empty overflow, or guesting over to a low population server so they can coordinate there outside of overflows.

Risk vs Reward [Challenging Content.]

Coldin.2840

I think 75% should get more loot than some greens. If you asked most people stuck in overflows, they would say that getting Teq down to even 75% is not easy.

The guy was asking for a chance to get an Ascended weapon + a chance to get a Tequatl skin for each quarter life taken. That’s excessive considering that you don’t even have to win the event.

As for getting more loot for each quarter. I would argue that coordinated groups would then be getting way too much loot, since they can regularly get Teq down to less than 50% each time. Consider the fact that no other boss actually gives loot for not completing the event, a chest at the quarter HP bar is pretty generous of Anet.

Why shouldn’t there be a chance for an ascended weapon for getting him down a quarter health? Maybe it shouldn’t be 25%, but a tiny % chance would be nice for the amount of effort it can take a group of players to get him down even that far. If that means big coordinated groups are getting more loot, then so be it. If they aren’t getting that kind of loot, we will quickly see participation fall off after a couple weeks once all of them get their achievements.

Think if Scarlet Invasions were designed so that the champions did not give any loot at all, and your only reward at the end were the champion loot boxes the wave completions rewarded. I bet we would see hardly any groups bothering to complete it since they could get that same amount of rewards from one tour around Queensdale.

No other boss gives loot for failing simply because those bosses are very difficult to actually fail. Pretty much any group of players will bring Jormag, Shatterer, MK II, and the Fire Elemental down, even with their upgrades. So I would not say Arenanet was being generous, but that Arenanet already anticipated groups frequently not beating him.

The key point here is reward. You should get a reward for winning, That’s where the incentive is.

Should I get a Pact “Victory” token for /threatening Zhaitan on the airship? Should I get a JP chest for making it past the first few jumps? And lastly, should I get my Monthly Bonus after doing only half of the required 4 tasks?

Take away the incentive to win, you take away the will to win.

You define “reward” as beating him completely. I’ll define the reward as “putting in time and effort and while not necessarily beating him, still making progress”. I guess my definition is a bit longer, but I believe it’s more fair to the average player.

Even so, why can we not have rewards for both the intervals, and a much grander reward for beating him? I see no reason why one has to suffer for the other.

I’ll propose some numbers here, just to give an idea of what I think would be fair.

Dragon Chest: You receive one of these for each % marker you get him down. So one dragon chest for 75%, two for 50%, and three for 25%. Inside the dragon chest is one flask of karma, a green item that has a high percentage chance for a rare, and 10 silver. Silver is mostly there to cover repair costs.

The first time per day per account you bring him down low enough to receive a dragon chest, you also receive 1 guaranteed rare item, with a chance for an exotic. This encourages people to attempt him at least once a day, even if they may not win.

Defeating him would reward the player with 3 dragon chests, as well as the Tequatl chest. The Tequatl chest includes 50 of each ascended material (Bloodstone, Empyrial, Dragonite), as well as one guaranteed exotic, with a chance of the ascended or named items, and 50 silver.

Now, you may say that giving players 1 exotic and 50 silver for beating Tequatl is too much. But let’s also consider that to beat him, a group has to basically coordinate and rally together over the course of an hour to get to the point where beating him is even possible. That time could be spent champion farming, where 50 silver is easily acquired as well as many chances for rares and exotics.

That’s what I think would be fair rewards, and hopefully keep people attempting Tequatl long after Boss Week is done. Assuming they don’t nerf Tequatl himself, of course.

Did you read your own post? You just said that if you fail, you get no loot. Then go on to ask for loot for failing.

*Edited to make it easier to understand.

Quote me where, please.

It’s in your own post:

Please don’t talk before reading.

If you fail the event you still get no loot.

I said you have to get him to atleast 75% HP for the first loot.

In essence, you’re asking for Easy Mode.

I think 75% should get more loot than some greens. If you asked most people stuck in overflows, they would say that getting Teq down to even 75% is not easy.

Who's Idea was it to make it so hard?

20% lying dead hoping for an hard res (in a fight with a strict timer, yeah dream on) instead of using those frigging waypoint and coming back;

This is the part that annoys me the most. It takes longer for a person to rez you than to run back, and if you do expect to be rez’d and someone is stupid enough to do it, it nows takes another dps out of the fight for that time.

YOUR DEAD? WAYPOINT BACK… you’re downed? then expect a rez.

Yes. That is a problem. But Arenanet exacerbated that problem by contesting the waypoint, instead of just moving the waypoint a bit further away from the action. Players are also not going to want to waypoint back since they feel like they’re missing the action during the run. Or they feel like it’s a waste because the fight isn’t going well.

I think most players stop trying once they notice they are in overflow. In theory, everyone getting in the overflow went there for the dragon, they should be aware of the mechanics and be equipped with the right gear, potions and attitude. Even if they lack TS this isnt rocket science if everyone tries to coordinate. My impression from overflow fights is that people give up before the dragon arrives, and try a lackluster zerg attack while attempting to join their party on the home server. Of course that fails, and the attitude fail cascades all future overflows too.

I don’t know about that.

Has any group managed to beat him without resorting to the majority of players using some kind of VOIP?

I don’t think it’s fair to say overflows automatically give up. I actually had a really good overflow last night. We had some groups together, DPS, Turrets, Fingers. And all we’re doing their jobs. About halfway through we lost the east turrets do to a champion grub one shotting everyone, and it did cascade from there. Still, I really thought were going to make that 75% mark, but we still fell short.

Problem is, overflows are more likely to have a lower amount of players present. And likely to have a higher amount of AFK players present as well. It’s also much harder to quickly get people to respond to problems without simply having a massive swing that just causes more issues.

Yeah, Tequatl is too hard.

Just because something is possible does not mean it is not too difficult.

Or did you just come here to show off?

There are actually 7 super easily obtained chests in Queensdale.

Which all still give fewer Fragments than doing one Temple run for Dragonite.

Overflow Stangeness

I’ve been trying to figure this out, but I honestly am not understanding what’s happening here.

Whenever I first zone into Sparkfly Fen, I get put into an Overflow that’s reasonably full of people. After the Tequatl fight ends (in failure), the overflow quickly drains of people, leaving maybe only a dozen near the Tequatl fight. However, if I leave the map and come back in, I will be put into a new overflow that’s once against bustling with people.

Is this simply an older overflow that I’m now in? Or are new people being put into this overflow, instead of my previous overflow which is now empty? How is one overflow becoming completely empty while another is almost full?

None of this is making much sense to me and is very strange.

How are so many defeating Teq?

Anet’s thing on so many worlds winning is a bit skewed.

Very true. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it’s not really “worlds beating Tequatl”, but “specific guilds/groups beating Tequatl”. For instance, SOR has beaten Tequatl, but despite being online at the time and waiting in overflow for over an hour, I was not able to be part of that victory.

So far?

Getting a big guild, or group of guilds, together and communicating on a VOIP. Also making sure that they’re all together in the same map.

These are things not really possible on low population servers, or your average overflow.
