though i will say, it almost seems its intentional cause there is a #1 powerup right there. but again, like OP said, we’ll see if ANet reacts to this.
Yeah. Though there’s actually one of each type of powerup right there, which makes me more think it was just someone placing them in a line.
I mean, there’s all those 3 powerups in the course, and I don’t think those really do anything.
And while I did address the points in your post here. I really have to take issue with your “We’re so kind” comment. That’s really bloody arrogant to just come out and say that.
Not sure if you really read my post. I was saying we were NOT doing that. It would be arrogant if we were doing that. Which we are not.
Orr is bad and Arenanet should feel bad about it.
Indeed.
I like some parts of Orr, and the temple events can be interesting mechanics. But overall, it’s sooo boring compared to all the other zones. No hearts either, which I find kind of strange. And all risen, and everything is just undead all the time. Making three zones worth of it was just too much.
(I also really wish Arah story mode hadn’t been a dungeon)
snip
Really over-analyzing it.
Patronizing would be if we were much more active in telling people that we got first, but since we’re so kind, we’re letting them win. Myself, I just hang out at the end if I happen to get there first, and usually mention it once or twice if someone brings up that they can’t win.
If I was really crossing the finish line every time, about 90% of the races I’m in would result in just me getting first. Some people are going to have a really hard time placing first anyway, what with lag and bad luck.
Nothing about trying to be a jerk. I want to race because I enjoy the race. I want to try to get a fast time because that’s what makes it a challenge. I want to wait at the end because someone else did that for me, and I was grateful. And others have been grateful to me for waiting as well. Hopefully then they’ll be able to just have fun racing and get better too.
Feels a little cheaty to me. But races aren’t usually won by such narrow a margin, so it rarely matter.
Probably just wasn’t intended. An easy fix would be to put a fence around that area. It should probably have one anyway considering how many people I’ve seen take a flying leap off the ledge crossing the finish.
It’s interesting to see how some people act about the WvW Sanctum Kite…compared to the Sanctum Sprint. One group has people that actively prevent people from getting an achievement, while the other has people that try to help others get the achievement/title.
Very interesting.
Since the changes in the update I have noticed it become more toxic than before. Players like the OP (assumption) really suck the community out of the events. Bad change imo.
Yep. I do notice more people will just go right for the victory. Not too many, and there’s still people that wait. But just a day ago, everyone was very willing to wait in the groups I was in.
Not that the rewards for winning are that much better. A few extra silver and karma. The only reward that might make me change waiting would be a really good chance at a skin. But even that would only last till I got the skin I wanted.
Pretty sure signet of shadows does not work in the race.
He might just be picking up the orange crystals, which bestow Vigor and Swiftness briefly. He could also be picking up the blue crystals, which refill endurance slightly to use light dashes more. Or he could be getting the aspect master powerups to get ahead. Lots of things he could be doing besides having a signet of shadows buff.
The only thing that I think might make the race a little more enjoyable is if the person in the lead wasn’t always getting the Bad Powerups. When the top 3 players get them from every pick up, it means the course gets littered with them.
Having some other offensive powerups mixed in would make it a little bit more random. Getting some wind gusts to just slow down competitors would still be useful, but not as aggravating for the other players.
Or…maybe change how the bad powerups work in general. Instead of knocking players back, they could just slow them down or immobilize. Part of the reason Mario Kart works well is because the leader usually gets really awful powerups. Just shells which are difficult to be fired backwards. (And of course, there’s also the blue shell to knock any first place players out)
Not sure if people have noticed yet, but players in the top 3 spots basically never get Aspect Master. But they might get one of the power ups that give them one use of the aspect master version of the abilities. There’s a few placed in spots where they can be used to get a shortcut, so keep an eye out for them.
They’re pretty darn rare. I personally haven’t seen any from a kite basket, but have seen a few drop off mobs.
Probably will see fewer people willing to let other people come in first now.
Yeah, just did a few more matches. It is luck.
That’s all this game is.
When you start, if you get the Aspect Mastery, you push off ahead. Then all you have to do is grab offensive bags and place traps and every single chokepoint (Especially ones you HAVE to lightning pull to) And you secure victory! That’s what I did. Pushed ahead, and put traps EVERYWHERE.
Every-Where.
Ended up winning by a good 30 seconds before 2nd place even showed up.
The 3rd place person was the same person who usually won, but this time they didn’t get the aspect mastery at the start and I did.
It’s luck at the start, then it’s all about being a kitten.Nah. There’s a lot of skill involved. Not screwing up is pretty important
I’ve won several times without bombing everywhere. I even won against someone else that was consistently bombing me simply because he made one bad jump.
Low latency helps a lot though. If you have a high ping, some of the jumps will be pretty impossible.
(Honestly, you probably won because you got better at it. Try it some more without using bombs and see how well you do.
)
Trust me, you can get good at this as much as you want but there’s only so much you can do without “luck”.
You can grab as many boosts as you want, but if all you’re snagging are Grounded and the other guy is getting Aspect Master, he will get ahead of you. And once he’s ahead, and has ZERO worries about traps of any kind (Grounded everywhere), all he has to do is be cheap.
There needs to be, someway to hit the 1st place guy, like a blue koopa shell.
When you’re far back, you can get checkpoint skips… something that occurs like that, but to try and bridge the gap between 1st and 2nd.
Well. The first guy can get hit with lightning…just not by the second place guy. Unless the second place gets grounded and collects a lightning that he gets with and uses it on the guy in first place.
It’s true though. If you’re in first, it’s more of your race to lose. It would be nice if there was a small chance for a second place to get an attack ability. But then…first place usually will have a grounded to negate it…so…
I happen to like political intrigue stories. If you’ve read Game of Thrones, that’s as much of a fantasy series as it is about political backstabbing and war.
I’m curious to see where this goes. After all, this was just the set up.
Yeah, just did a few more matches. It is luck.

I’ve been hanging back at the end to give players a chance to win, though obviously I can’t make everyone else do the same.
Spend your first few times just learning the track. There’s a few tricks where you can use a light dash and jump to clear some gaps that would normally take longer to traverse. Get used to using grounded as well, since that’s key in shaking off lightning damage, or bombs.
Beyond that, getting an early lead is a really good way of getting a victory. Go for the powerups early on, and spam your light dashes. There’s little risk to using them at the beginning, so it can help a lot. You can use bombs to slow other players down, but if you’re doing well, you shouldn’t need to.
And if you’re having a really hard time with the group you got…just leave and join a new race. You might get some people more your speed. Or at least more generous.
Well I know the tune I’ve heard a few of them singing matches the background music for the area…
Supposedly there’s 52, but good luck finding them all.
I would love it if this zone was available every so often. Especially with the racing.
Ele players are the loudest whiners on the forums but since it gets us some attention I don’t often call them out on it. Most just play the same old boring bunker set and then complain that theres no damage or they die too easy when they’re throwing their dodges away for a blast finisher.
actually not….
You can find thieves complaining in EVERY SINGLE profession forum saying other professions are OP.
WHen they get nerfed they managed to have the nerf reverted prior to the release and changed with a minor one that was again reverted following patch.
They even complain to not be good in www just to say what whining does mean……(almost evey non thief players complain of the profession being god mode in www).
Ele on the other side is the most nerfed profession, and the one with more downsides
p.S. I Play mesmer since months…..because i was really tired of that.
Thieves are only “god-mode” in 1v1 and small scale battles. They’re pretty awful in a Zerg, and attacking towers and keeps, especially now that they have no 1200 range attacks.
I’ll say Thieves are the most downtrodden just to put in this thread. They pretty much have no role in dungeons, or in big WvW battles.
Shortbow is now pretty much a mid-range to close quarters weapon. I just wish they would go a bit more all out on it now, and fix clusterbomb to have a faster projectile speed.
I think the best fit for 1200 range weapon would be to give us Rifle. We already use pistols, so moving up to a rifle isn’t far-fetched from a logic standpoint. It’s also a two-handed weapon, so there wouldn’t have to be any worries how it interacts with other weapons.
It could be more single target damage, though throwing in one AOE skill with a burning effect might not be bad. I know some people are commenting about how it should be less mobile, but I don’t really see why. It could have one skill that’s a big windup shot to deal massive damage, but the rest could be more versatile. One skill could be similar to Black Powder, creating an AOE blind, but also stealthing the player. Other skills could be a knockback, or a leap. I do think it should stay a bit away from condition damages like bleeds, though Burning/Torment might be interesting. Really though, conditions should be made more useful on Shortbow and Pistols first.
Regarding pistols, I know they could be seen as a 1200 range weapon, but I don’t think they would work very well in that role without some major tweaks. Dual pistols just isn’t very fun to play even now.
I guess an easier thing though might be to just give us on trait somewhere that increases the range of Shortbow/Pistol. It wouldn’t be as nice as getting the rifle, but at least then I would have that option if I wanted it.
I got sword and pistol, because I’m crazy like that.
Actually, it’s because I use that setup the most in PVE exploring, so that’s what will get seen the most. Didn’t go for shortbow simply because I already had the Super Shortbow.
Don’t be so sure. Apparently you’ll be able to trade in zhaitaffy for the new boxes that will contain crystal recipes and such. I expect we’ll see prices of coffers slowly climb over the next few months.
So if you’re hunting for a ticket, you’re probably better off buying coffers sooner than later.
Honestly, our down skills kind of suck in general. I guess the dagger throw can work okay for a rally. But that teleport just buys one a little distance and sometimes doesn’t work very well.
Smokebomb is really bad though. The only time I’ve really found it to be any bit useful is in PVP to slightly delay someone finishing you off. Other than that, it’s pretty much pointless for how short it lasts. Summoning a thief would be a lot more useful, especially since those guys love drawing aggro.
Because damage is preferred by many in dungeons.
Bad or newer thieves roll glass cannons in PvE and die frequently.
PvE != Dungeons and newer thieves die a lot because of it.
Thieves should be a supporting role (ie. not main source of direct damage in dungeons).
Conditions and the shortbow are the thieves friend in dungeons.
I’m not sure if thieves are all that good in a support role either. Besides an area heal/stealth, and the buffs from Steal when traited, there’s just not a lot of support there.
And unfortunately, even speccing for more defense really doesn’t work very well on Thief unless it’s all stealth reliance. And then you’re mostly stringing together dodges and stealth moves to keep bosses from killing you. A thief gets a few good hits, and they’ll go down, glass cannon or not.
Sword/Pistol?
You do realize that’s the weapon set with about the least amount of stealth, right? In fact, none of their weapon abilities can be used to get stealth on their own. (Now Dagger/Pistol. That’s a different story.)
Anyway, even as a thief, I admit that in 1v1 situations, thieves can have just a bit too much stealth going on. I’ve fought a dagger/pistol thief who couldn’t really kill me, but every time I tried to get him, he’d vanish into stealth and recover.
That said, outside of 1v1s, Thieves are pretty awful. No 1200 range weapons. Limited survivability when faced against a zerg. Condition removal requires either stealth, spamming a skill, or making sure a utility is slotted.
It’s kind of funny that we had this balance pass on traits and skills, and all it really did was make these “ganker” perma-stealth style thieves even more important. Thieves don’t really have many other options.
Using the Shortbow as access to a blast finisher isn’t as useful as some people think. To spam it, you have to be in close quarters. To use it at max range (which got reduced), it takes forever to travel to the target. Plus, the exploded cluster bomb doesn’t count as a blast finisher at all, so one has to be careful to not explode the shot if what they want is a finisher.
And yeah. In a zerg, you pretty much have to stay back at range, or stay far enough away from the fight simply to pick at stragglers. Thieves die quick when caught by a mob of players.
What are your guys thoughts on the Assassin’s Reward trait?
I’ve thought about pairing it up with the Signet of Malice for a more tanky/survivable Thief, but I haven’t really noticed it having much effect. Maybe I need to pair it with more Healing gear?
Hopefully they add a way to remove those Hylek’s that are stinking up my home instance and replace them with Quaggans (or Kasmeer Meade).
You have Hylek in your home instance?
I wonder if there are Skritt in mine?
I bought a couple hundred more coffers now that the event is nearly over an the coffers are about as cheap as they are likely to get.
Lo and behold, I actually pulled a Jade Ticket. My second one. I guess I’m just lucky with these. I did make sure to have magic find boosts (food/banner) running while I was opening them. Don’t know if it helped much but made me feel better.
Of course, there’s also the hundreds of coffers I’ve opened while just killing mobs and running around the world.
Computers 101:
Random number generator generates numbers randomly.
Actually. They don’t.
Well. They do and they don’t. Really only random over a very large set. A computer’s RNG can be much more streaky than what we expect, so sometimes steps are taken to make the RNG be a bit less random by making sure it doesn’t roll the same number multiple times in succession.
I agree the OP is a troll though.
I’m not colorblind, and I still find these circles are very difficult to see. There’s simply not enough contrast.
So, does anything good come out of these caches? Unless the new weapon skins are in these, I don’t even care about looking for them.
I haven’t seen anything good from the caches. Just blue items so far. Only reason to get them is for the achievement.
I have an organized 12 player team within our guild, and we primarily do dungeon runs and WvW together. We all play together and can swap in and out of 5 man teams without messing up group comp or coordination. When we saw the Obsidian Sanctum cache on the achievement list, we grouped up, rolled through the puzzle and took control of the end point at the top of the Sanctum, and camped there for an hour. Why would we do such a terrible thing? We have 500 members in our guild, some of whom don’t do WvW or have never done the EB JP, or for whatever reason don’t have the means to get the achievement by themselves. We got about 40-50 guildies to the top of the JP, along with a number of other players on our server who were not in our guild. We probably killed about 10-15 people who made it to the top and attacked us, but there were also about another 20-30 players who came through during that time who had the good sense not to attack a large guild group, and we left them alone and let them finish. I know people camp the puzzle just to kill other players and be kittens about it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the people camping are doing it just to kill people trying to finish, but not everyone camping there is trying to be an as*hole about it. We’re in the middle of a very tough match-up this week with Tarnished Coast and Fort Aspenwood. TC has been facerolling us for the past 7 days, and if we hadn’t camped the puzzle, a lot of people wouldn’t have been able to do it.
I have no problem with a guild going in and just making the place safe for their guildies. Or their server. But mostly what I’m seeing so far is just blatant griefing to prevent anyone from another server from making progress. I’m sure there’s probably people from my own server who aren’t entirely innocent about it either.
Of course, really I just blame ArenaNet for the ones who thought that this was a good idea. Making a WvW living story achievement is fine. Making that tie in to a larger achievement where the rest all just require PVE is not fine.
Southsun Cove event received drastically more complaint than Dragon Bash and why? Because the content was done in a day. Then they released the solo dungeon which led into a party dungeon, both of which gave nothing but were required for the achievements.
So… while Southsun Cove did not require you to do the jumping puzzle OR the dungeon for the backpiece[s], they were both still there and a lot of people complained, regardless.
Actually, generally Southsun received complaint due to the difficulty of monsters and the PVP which was difficult to master. Maybe they let people get that backpiece too quickly, but I wouldn’t say too easily.
It’s anonymity both ways too.
You don’t know who they are, and they don’t know who you are. So they aren’t killing a name, they’re just killing random invaders, creating a further disconnect from responsibility. I guess it’s a good thing to stop flaming, but it also means they won’t get called out for being camping trolls either.
All I have to say is, whatever Dev had the bright idea to put a Living Story achievement buried into a WvW jumping puzzle was a truly evil mastermind.
I would like to thank Anet for giving me many new targets to kill. This is a great way to introduce people to the fun of WvW!
You do realize that repeatedly getting killed against overwhelming odds tends to make people want to stay as far away from WvW as possible, right? Sure, there are those rare people who actually take it as a challenge and try to round up others to push their way through. But that’s the exception.
I know on the Black Gate server. Our guild LaZy were porting people for a good while. Even had some interesting battles with Hostiles (JQ). Perhaps your guilds can also help out the community…
Yeah….. Black Gate…
Right now, there’s a whole guild from RIOT that’s essentially camping the puzzle. Basically preventing any other world from making progress in the puzzle.
The invisible wells help to a point. But when you have 30 enemies all running through the puzzle and spamming AOEs (Black Gate is apparently horrible at the dark room), it’s pretty much impossible.
Almost all of GW2’s dungeons I put on the “too hard” side of the difficulty. There’s just no scaling here. I can’t select an easy mode, or a hard mode. It’s all hard mode. I guess they want people out doing events for easier activities, but so much of the story is told through dungeons, so it’s kind of strange.
I wouldn’t mind so much if this dungeon was sticking around for a while. But it’s kind of mean of ArenaNet to make a temporary dungeon and then make it difficult that the average PUG has issues completing it.
Yay…we’re the only class without a 1200 range weapon.
Well, that could be player inputted, so doesn’t mean much to me that it’s on the wiki.
But still pretty useless really that there will be this new condition and the only way thieves can apply it is through a boring venom.
Why is everyone so fixated on the Cluster Bomb nerf? It’s not even our main source of DPS. Shortbow was REALLY strong, and this nerf put Cluster Bomb in line with the rest of our stuff.
I’m surprised not as many people are crying over the Shadow Return mega-nerf =p
Hopefully, they altered S/P’s timing enough to make it viable again.
People are focused on the Cluster Bomb because we don’t have any other 1200 ranged attack. Shortbow honestly isn’t all that strong, but works great as a utility weapon. I really don’t see it as the weapon thieves pull out when they want to do damage, but when they want to run support, or simply stay at a safe distance.
Though, according to the “leaked” notes, Rangers got all their Shortbow skills reduced to 900 meters too. But that came with a damage boost to make up for it.
I’m hoping these are fake personally.
Seems pointless to add a new condition, and only give one way of applying it as a thief.
Also taking away Thieves’ only 1200 range attack would be a low blow by Arenanet if they didn’t give us a new weapon that had all 1200 range attacks.
I can see Pistols (maybe off-hand dagger), and Shortbows getting it.
I’d love to see Trick Shot add one stack of Torment.
Why do thieves, one of the most mobile classes that gets to strike you while essentially following you while moving get a skill that will essentially force you to stop moving negating the only chance you have to stop their burst via dodging? Cause they needed more help to kill targets?
Sounds legit.
Because. :P
I’m guessing that Thieves will only be able to apply torment while wielding Shortbows and/or Pistols. Makes the most sense to have a movement stopper on the ranged weapons. Though I guess it could be on Sword too, since you do want your target to stay still for things like pistol whip.
Oh, or maybe it will be added to a trait line, like Thievery.
Most people say yes.
I think it does as well, as it’s a rare drop, rather than common. That said, RNG is RNG, so your mileage will vary no matter how much MF you have.
I do think the RNG is pretty poor personally, but I did finally get a jade skin after about 200 normal coffers opened. That’s maybe not too bad. But it sucks for people that are buying 10+ rich coffers and not getting a single one. Paid items really should not be so heavily reliant on good luck. It’s exactly what I don’t like about SWTOR’s cartel packs.
Of course…now that I have my jade ticket, I have no clue what to spend it on! A sword? A dagger? A pistol? I kind of want them all.
This would be interesting. Might make using the attack portion against a moving mob/player a bit easier to pull off.
Personally, I’d rather see the damage increased back to what it was before they nerfed Haste.
You know. I really wish Daggerstorm reflected AOE projectiles. It feels kind of useless in most cases.
