Please don’t forget to do your daily gated material for this. Unless you plan on buying stuff items like Damask or Spiritwood have limits, or gates, on how many can be made in 24 hours (1). Also you might need other things with said limits.

To the best of my knowledge the game wasn’t designed around supporting or healing classes. Of course I always hold the right to be incorrect.

To complicate things we are trying to balance classes in a free for all format of play. We are talking about any gear, party, or buff combination multiplied by any number of players.

They would have a better chance by combining sPvP and WvW together to include all restrictions. Otherwise they would be wise to remove it all together and just provide a open world server for those who like this playstyle. While this is the format I prefer to play (former DaOC player) A.net has no clear desire based on what we have seen to promote or develop this format. It has been on auto-pilot for many years now.

[WvW] Best builds for duels?

Too much noise to duel in WvW. It really doesn’t belong there and that is why they nerfed Obsidian Sanctum. Otherwise you are nothing more than a speed bump by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Aka collateral damage.

What I found interesting about HoT is that there are players who know the animations of classes and relate to their builds while the fight is going on. It is these people who clearly are above average players and do well regardless of the stat differences WvW yields. Hell, they might as well fight naked because they would still come out on top.

Hmm…that is an awkward statement or use of words. Hopefully you get the idea. Build helps but learning your class and animations of others negates flavor of the month 99% of the time. In my opinion anyway.

Unless you are one to min and max and maybe care only about 1 v 1 fights DPS meters have no meaningful impact to the format. Too much noise. By that I mean:

Self imposed buffs, food, potions, or other forms of boosts
Buffs provided by others given freely, stolen, borrowed
Reflects, blocks, interrupts
Runes, sigils
Luck

At the end of the day you are better off understanding animations and typical builds by class. Once you master that you can pretty much play naked and be perfectly fine. That is what separates good players from average. My personal opinion of course so your mileage may vary.

Why ranger will never be viable in WvW

To the OP. Can you please clarify your definition of Viable?

Not sure what you were expecting of a WvW format, it’s impossible to balance.

Great answer, with some solid arguments. However, it is possible to balance provided the developer sets a proper priority on it and staffs it accordingly. Since it doesn’t appear either of those boxes are checked we are back to your answer with it being impossible.

I will say that the Alpha client of CU is looking very promising. While I’m positive it will have balance issues the main difference is that it is PvP only. Makes it a bit easier to skin that cat when we ignore PvE mode(s).

Avatar Cooldown in WvW: 15 seconds is to long

If they keep Avatar CD at 15 sec, a 20% reduction to this CD available on a trait which make you drop either Druidic Clarity or Celestial Shadow to access it could actually be smart. Nice suggestion as they wouldn’t have to revert their previous change.
However anything above 15 sec before this potential reduction and the specialization is dead. It’s already agonizing at 15 sec in WvW.
The thing is, they would have to normalize the 15 seconds CD even to PvE. Not sure how it would be received by the PvE crowd.

And yes, I also see a nerf coming to Druidic Clarity and/or Celestial Shadow. We won’t be able to dodge this one. Too much whining even after the “nerf”.

Shouldn’t be, nor should you accept it if there is one. At this stage of the game and the Druid’s development lifecycle there is zero reason for not understanding how to manage a Druid fight. Zero.

NA is toxic. Lots of disgruntled players thinking they should be ranked higher than they are. Others frustrated because they placed better and are falling due to luck of the team draw. Loss typically equates to a greater loss in points than a win. Game team chat is toxic when you don’t do what is assumed to be normal or make a mistake. First couple minutes if it looks like a loss, player(s) start to AFK out because it is a no-win – or so they think.

There is skill, no doubt, but I think luck of the team draw far outweighs skill in bronze and silver tiers. You can’t carry mean spirited players throwing games in spite, you can’t carry a game when it looks bad at the start and they just stop playing or trying. You can’t carry 3 or more unskilled or unaware, or uncaring players. Period. Good, or better, is only going to take you so far. Back to the toxic comment…

Non spvp players did enter the meta to do dailies but it didn’t matter or show has much. With the introduction of ascended gear, and chests, it brought in the PvE crowd has another option to obtain quick and easy set of ascended (although I would think pve players would have ascended gear coming out the wazoo but maybe not).

My own personal opinion thus far is that it is toxic and not has much fun. In fact, unenjoyable comes to mind. Just one mans opinion.

when ur druid decides at 496-496 to stealth the whole team before we can decap mid.

Sadly I accidently did this. It didn’t cause a loss but I did get some very enlightening whispers. Which I deserved rightly so and proceeded to pay more attention now. So consider the message received!

Just posted this in another thread. Can’t agree more.

There needs to be some logic coded in the post game score to penalize those who try vs those who give up. Sure, maybe the game would have ended up a loss anyway even if they tried. But going AFK does impact and it causes frustration for those who are honestly trying. Trying to win, or learn, or get better. Not because they are pro or look at how I did.

Last 4 games for me before stopping are all losses. In each case one or two of our team stopped playing. I know this isn’t unique to GW2 but it sure in the heck is frustrating. And definitely is a buzzkill with regards to the enjoyment of the game. Losing because the other team is better is perfectly fine. Losing to afk is not.

You can’t carry AFK.

Need to find a way to punish those who throw games or clearly stop playing a 1/4 of the way into a game. Could be back luck on my part, time of day, no idea, but this is the most frustrating thing at the moment I see.

Enter game. 1 or 2 minutes in you are down 50 or so and the team in-fighting starts. Someone or some two give up and it is a 3 v 5 no win situation. There isn’t much you can do. Rest of it, well, should work itself out. But this throwing games in spit, or giving up, or afk, whatever, is hurting those of us trying to honestly manage our score to climb the ladder.

Can’t carry afk.

I’m doing fairly well in mid gold and was planning to get to mid platinum, but I’m already done with this season. Every time I join a PvP season I remember why I stop playing PvP for long stretches: Babies that quit at the start of the match.

You get much better small scale fights in WvW where people play for fun instead of giving up at the slightest hint they’ll have to play decently rather than just coast.

Yeah, I agree. I’m just a bit surprised. Some rage in the game, cuss, call names, etc. I’m not going to do that (not that I’m not frustrated). But last 4 games all had people just up and give up. Seems like there should be some form of penalty for them. Sure, maybe we couldn’t pull out the win. I get it. But what if…

Seems very toxic in low silver. Hopefully others are finding some fun.

I have nothing to add to this thread other than this.

There are no cheese builds in this game. People play what works for them. Just because you don’t like it, or find it easy to play, doesn’t mean it is cheese. Same holds true for any class and any format of play. All classes have something that we all know is a bit wonky, or easy, or sort of a “I” win mechanic (to include getting away).

You don’t balance a game around duels unless the intent is to provide a arena or league that supports it. Since we don’t other than what happens informally in WvW this is a moot point. Balance is the issue for all classes in the game today in my opinion and nothing unique or game breaking to the Druid.

But then again, this is what happens when you release new elites without proper testing. Most classes had more than one open beta weekend of play. Druid got one and suffered. If I was part of their team the first thing I’d do is create a public test / patch server….

Survival / heal druid – not climbing much to say the least but it is a combination of luck, comp, and in some cases just being out played. Low silver. Win a few, go up, lose a few go down. Like a penny falling off a 10 story building. The fall is faster or so it seems.

One of the keys seems to know the right time to swap weapons and burst. Other times it is like camping staff to build up AF which seems to lag. Conditions are tough. Then you are bum rushed by 2 guardians and a warrior, well, not much you can do no matter how well you bunker. SoS at times doesn’t seem to work but could be lag. I don’t know, maybe it will all work out but may have to mix in a round of replacing LB for sword / dagger and maybe glyph of equality.

Interesting discussion. It is easier to fall then climb. Good and above players help there is no argument. However, there is also no argument that a single good player is going to carry the rest of the field. Easiest way to look at it is if you spell team. There is no “I” in team meaning a single person.

All any of them had to do was go play WoW and some arena’s and see how it is done. This isn’t anything like trying to re-invent the wheel.

Without getting into a heal support design debate, the previous Druid build was fine. The issues were that most players didn’t use counters and spent more time crying instead of improving.

This is actually spot on and many of our issues we face today (along with Longbow).

Druid was actually in a very good place and many would argue we are still OK today. But the issue always comes down to the player base not knowing how to counter the Druid abilities. So rather than learning to counter or play better they complained on the various forums and other outlet means to dumb down the class and/or ability. Thus the change(s).

We saw this pre-HoT with Rapid Fire, and post HoT with Druid. My opinion is that the cool down is a bit long. Having said that I still manage ok with it and only see an issue when I’m being heavily focused in large scale fights. But this is actually another issue and not really one of the Druid. WvW needs some love above all else.

Had some hopes as I read through these “notes” that they rework core classes. What a letdown.

Condi Ranger is not unplayable, but it just gets outclassed by warrior. Maybe it’s slightly better in terms of mobility. Depends on your weapon choice.

Another season with shout trooper for me. I’m not even mad since a lot people still can’t deal with pew pew Druid . Maybe they will remove Mender amulet for more “diversity”, because thats how balance changes work in 2016.

I don’t sPvP but wanted to ask what the trooper pew pew build is.

MetaBattle-like Stealth Trapper in WvW

Sword / torch is fun, and provides a nice combo. Short bow isn’t too bad since the last changes. What sort of roaming are you trying to do? Scout, flipping camps, sentries, NPC camps, etc? Or are you just a dueler?

Personally I have two builds I rotate through depending on the server match up or group I’m in. More often than not I’m either solo or in a small party. If we are picking off the stragglers of the zerg then I’m running a full LB/GS berserker build with WS, Marks, and Druid traits slotted. On the other hand if I’m solo roaming then I’ll switch over to amore safety net build which is NM, BM, and Druid with heavy toughness and healing. I’ll bore them to death until they leave or wear them down because they forget about my pet. Timing burst and CC is key and I find I can manage out numbered fights unless they are better players.

Pre-HoT trapper runes rocked. Now, not so much post nerf. That is what happens when you cross PvE and sPvP.

Seriously commander siegerazer is like mensa member compared some of there commanders. Some noob probably come tell that it’s better have some commander than no commander. ACTUALLY, NO IT ISN’T!!!!.

Maybe I’ve not had enough coffee, maybe dense, but with transfers come balance and caps. Has the linking really spread out the top three and bottom three in the US just has an example? How are you going to handle Blackgate, Mag, and Jade? Or, how do we handle “full”. I mean full is full, we can’t put anything else in it otherwise it overflows.

They have the data. It would be interesting to dive into it and do some analysis since launch or whenever they started to collect it. Then we’d be able to see the actual numbers, servers rise and fall, etc. Will be of interest (data is beautiful) but probably of no help…

Stats in WvW do matter in small groups, scouting, or solo roaming. In larger scale a player can mix in and make do being naked (i.e. carried). Then there is the fact blobs can abuse traits, sigils, food, conditions, and a host of other things that most of us agree are game breakers.

Literally everybody who plays WvW at some point plays vs small numbers of enemies. thus stats will matter to everybody who plays WvW.

Well, I’m not going to mince words but I do see your point. I don’t know which side of the scale is more common (large blob vs. havoc / roaming). I can only speak for my play style and stats do help.

But then again it is of my opinion that even if in a uneven fight skill will always trump stats. Better players are just that. Better. They know animations, they adapt, etc.

Format has needed attention right out of the gate. Quickest and easiest solution would be to treat it like sPvP. Addresses a lot of the issues around gear, stats, and the abuse of food. Yet it yields larger fights, open maps, semi open-world pvp, etc.

Bonus is you just saved some development effort because you won’t have to deal with WvW / PvE balance issues.

Edit: @Diku – Birds of a feather flock together… You still have populations, real world clock, transfers, and of course map capacity. You can’t just visit any server – see EBG queues now. Forcing players through BL’s for supply chain and entrance to EBG is good. Similar to what DaOC had back in 2000…

You have to remove the “server” from the equation and place the onus on the players and their actions. A real leader / ladder board. Weekly stats by player, class, guild, alliance, among other things like most kills, deaths, fastest time through JP, most siege, longest duration claiming keep, castle, tower, camp, and any other thing along those lines. You keep servers and linking into the mix and people will still transfer.

I mean – let me ask you a question. How many people do you see leaving the T1 servers and joining say Ebay…right – none.

Ascended is already available, has a RNG drop, in WvW.

All things considered and/or being / not being equal, it only becomes a problem if “your” primary play is WvW. Which for some it is, myself included. In that line of play your odds of acquiring ascended, either by drop or by craft, is going to be on the slow boat across the Pacific compared to say someone who raids, does dungeons, or PvE. And now sPvP. Daily or seasonal players will again have a faster happy path.

PvP is a different game format, own gear, etc.

WvW allows PvE gear, accessories, weapons, food buffs, etc.

There are a few other cross overs but more or less sPvP is on its own. Sometimes a skill/trait will get nerfed to fit in the sPvP meta that is otherwise missed. Same with runes, sigils, etc.

Someone here mentioned it, not sure who (sorry) but this is a quality of life/game issue. They said along the lines Tyria mastery and auto loot. Now, auto loot is open for me in WvW. I entered the Halloween boss farm place and automatically assumed my loot was in my bags. Much to my surprise it wasn’t and I left a lot of litter behind me. Yeah, stupid on my part but why on earth would you unlock it in one format of play yet lock it in another? Oh yeah, have to earn those mastery points.

But wait – some of us actually don’t like the personal stories or we used what points we had for other things. Prime example of a ignorant quality of game choice by the developers which force you to do something you don’t want to do. What happened then is the farm train is always ahead because they are all just tagging and moving and collecting loot while those who don’t have the proper master points spent lag.

Yeah – because we needed those mastery points to craft the next step of the legendary. Another RNG piece of poo. I’d wager 98% of the player base since head start have never seen a precursor drop. More so if they only play WvW.

As for CU, yeah subs will hold it back, but make it bomb in 6 months? I’m not so sure. One thing to keep in mind is that game is built for RvR front to back, there’s no separate pve area, no spvp area, the devs will only be working on RvR, you won’t have to worry about being the red haired step child starving for attention for 4 years from the pve mother. Also the game is like at least another year out, I wouldn’t worry about animations and graphics right now as they’re still building the base systems, it’s still in alpha at this point.

One more tidbit to support what Xenesis noted on with regards to devs and RvR. Jacobs knows he made a mistake with the introduction of the Trials of Atlantis expansion pack. In fact, the mistake was so big it destroyed the game. Being the primary designer he knows what happens first hand when introducing a new format of play when it wasn’t designed at the start. In other words ToA expansion introduced master levels and PvE content that impacted RvR / PvP.

Master levels, weapons and artifacts soon became an issue of those who had vs those who had not. Now, it did have some pve to quest, level, and of course raid level bosses but it was just a means to an end and materials for crafting…

So, does this mean it is a sure fire win? No, hardly. Just saying that he knows what happens when you mix game play modes. Balance is very difficult to do and very few, if any, publishers have gotten it right.

Midgard, Igraine (Thane, Pac Healer, Spiritmaster (suppression), Shadowblade, and of course Hunter ML10, and some realm rank I forget…).

No, it really wont. This has been the argument for every subscription game since WoW. CU with subscriptions is dead on arrival. I expect it to last maybe 6 months before imploding due to low population. I just looked up gameplay footage on youtube, yep, still nothing substantial (also, still womit inducing animations).

The two ton heavy thing you mentioned still has over 5 million active subscribers and peaked over 12. Still going strong and latest content many are happy with including those who enjoy open world pvp. If it is good people will pay. Look at how much people are paying for water or a cup of coffee. And starbucks is talking about a 10 dollar coffee…go figure.

Not saying you or anyone don’t have a valid point but it will work if the game is any good. We will just have to wait and see. Our issue here is zero competition in this format of play and a publishers perceived lack of interested to invest.

Wow is free to play now as well if you want it to be so yeah that’s a thing…..

There is a conversion now, yeah. I was just saying how strong it was with a subscription and the number of players. Not to mention the trash accounts used for spam.

People are buying gems in this game to dress up. Others for space, and others for keys. Someone has to pay…the question is is it cheaper for a monthly sub if you get what you pay for or pay for your pretty dress?

And yes, I’m aware you can transfer currencies. But we all know how time consuming it is in GW2 to farm legit and not use third party programs.

Agreed on the subscription. CU has already stated it will have one.

That being said you have to pay for infrastructure and bandwidth somehow. If the game is any good subscriptions will work. Yes, GW2 is somewhat F2P but there is the gem store among other things. For a game that was sort of sold has a gateless system there sure do seem to be lots of them.

I’d wager here and now most of the past, present, and future WvW gamers will give CU an honest try by at least buying the download or box and a month or two of change. After that it is up to the overall fun factor and quality…

WvW in this game is clearly a bust based on the current history, patches, and lack of new anything…

True – although none of those titles created the WvW format of play. DaOC did.

Doesn’t mean it won’t have its own problems by any means. But it does mean the game is actually designed around PvP out of the gate. Not an after thought.

Once they removed the map complete for WvW POIs, vistas, and jump puzzles, and removed siege in Obsidian Sanctum it was dead.

Just a discussion Yuffi – not an assault

Birds of a feather flock together. Leagues, choices, populations, servers, limits/caps, and of course “SERVER TRANSFERS” to name just a few. That problem still isn’t solved. Furthermore, while I see you mentioned no ppt, there can only be one number one and everything else falls below n through last.

Remove servers and ranks. You need to start there and put the emphasis on the player and their actions. Then guilds and alliances. Finally, you build a system and portal around the players to represent a score and ladder. Then you can display:

Top “insert-number” guilds
Top “insert-number” alliances
Top “insert-number” players by class
Top “insert-number” players by rank/ladder
Most players kills
Most player deaths
Most yaks killed
Most towers taken
Longest tower, keep, castle, camp held
Most NPC’s flipped
Most sentries killed
Most ruins captures, held
etc…

Anytime a server or map has constraints (players, time zone, or total population) these problems will happen. Linking has helped but they still have it wrong because some servers are paired, others are tri, and on a rare occasion some solo. You also build a league system sort of like PvP – don’t you think everyone is going to want to be in diamond or insert any other choice?

At the end of the day there are caps. Someone is going to want to enter the diamond league and be told no…either by solo, by group, by guild, or any other factor. The door is shut once a limit is reached. Now you are right back to square one today.

I’m thinking you never played DaOC which invented this format of play. That is exactly why they initially didn’t allow server transfers and didn’t tie scores to servers. They focused on players. Having said that they still had population and realm issues. Thus my comment about other games or this not being unique to GW2. Even WoW has this issue…

Good question Svarty. Sometimes I think the devs have something in mind, ask the public, public disagrees, and devs implement anyway. Its like, don’t you listen at all or is this just an issue that parents know best or always right.

In any case I’m not trying to call the OP out but just stated the pattern I see. There are many issues I personally don’t believe this map is a high priority or low hanging fruit item to address.

This isn’t going to solve the problem. Unfortunately this isn’t just a GW2 issue, or WoW, or any other game before such as DaOC. Anytime you have servers, time zones, population, or map population limits this will happen. No way around it.

Only way to fix it is to remove server constraint, open up the WvW maps to unlimited, and fix the client and network layers to handle the numbers. See EvE Online has an example of 30K + clients although they are not avatars dodging, spewing animations of golden bombs of light and love…

What I’m saying is that while technically possible you won’t see this in a free to play client anytime soon. Only one vendor on track to remotely do this is Amazon due to their cloud infrastructure and insane network bandwidth.

Ideas are welcome but this isn’t going to be something Arena Net can manage unless they go subscriber based and willing to invest in client side optimization…

If that was the case throw everyone into Obsidian Sanctum and have at it.

The map was supposed to create new objectives and provide advantages based on engagement locations. Right or wrong, those cliff faces, bridges, and anything else that re-routes you was to be just that. An obstacle to provide an advantage to other force.

Probably failed. Maybe should have been left in EoTM. But then again, that wasn’t supposed to be a K-Train and more of a development platform for WvW.

I probably would have swapped it out with EBG personally and leave the original BL’s as they are. Then in order to enter the new map force people to start in BL navigating to portal for main map. Something along those lines so supply chains are moving, allows control, denial of access, etc.

Right now we just port into anything that is open, no queue, or interest.

The Most Frustrating WvW Dailies

None of that matters to me, it does not affect me in any manner, if and when I complete a daily it’s as simple as “oh look I forgot I get stuff for doing stuff”. However, the OP seems to be the type of person that cares and so if what he/she says is true that completing dailies is more time consuming in WvW then it should be changed to fall in line with every other game mode for the sake of those who give 2 craps.

If nothing changes, I personally won’t even notice. The point is making it enjoyable for everyone and if Dailies are what some players play for then by all means change them to suit these people. It won’t affect those of us who do not care either way.

I see your point. And I also see that it isn’t a issue for you. Fair enough.

Counter point would be a WvW / PvP’er trying to do PvE dailies and saying something similar. My point I guess is that if one can look at it without their personal biasness then most would agree they are relatively easy to accomplish outside the taking of a keep with multiple options to find and/or complete objectives.

This is just my opinion. Doesn’t mean it is right or wrong. Personally I think the game has been simplified enough but that is just me. And trust me, I’m one of the vocal people complaining on how difficult “I” think it is to craft nevermore…so I have my own baggage

The PvE’s r cute, but really your scripted fights and your ability to RP will be fine. Your world won’t end if it’s disabled for a short duration I promise.

On the flip side if they never introduced them to appease the care bears to begin with, WvW wouldn’t have had this issue, so please delete PvE, it’s always causing game breaking issues for WvW.

If myself or the OP was being honest ? lolok I really don’t care if they change them or not, it does however make sense if what the OP is saying is true. The day I play this game to do dailies … I’m not even going to finish this sentence because it will never happen. As for map completion, never done it, don’t care, never intend to. Anything else you would like to be so incredibly wrong about ?

Well, maybe we can start with a daily in a PvP zone. Or maybe we can start with the difficulty bit about veterans (multiple choices and map selections) or how one can use boosts to gain world exp faster.

The only one I’d remotely call difficult is taking a keep. That usually depends on the server or pairing. But even then you have other choices to complete the WvW daily and therefore only losing on one possible reward.

What is the issue again?

Lower level server, pops portal, alliance members can join to help at the cost of badges, bloodstone, or any other useless collecting item we don’t need per person who answers the call.

Of course it’s unbalanced because WvW is just one big frigging mess. How can you balance something if you just fill maps random players that have totally different play styles and goals? Some side might have like 50% less players and 20% of these players don’t contribute anything because they doing some dueling or GvG. WvW is like multiculturalism. Doesn’t work.

Because there is no competition with similar size or scale. So they can defer any development work until there is pressure. WvW is a lame duck at the moment. Once a new game with similar behavior you will see them react. By then it will be too late.

At best we are looking at late 2017 for one of the more famous developers launching. That is if they stay on track. Hard to say but at this point it is what it is and what you make of it. Fun, stay. No fun, limit time or slow down until you can break the addiction to the friction.

The Most Frustrating WvW Dailies

I don’t play for the dailies at all but, the OP has a point if it’s so mind numbingly easy and very little time invested in every other mode then WvW should be no different. Is it a priority ? definitely not but I also suspect changing a couple numbers is not an extensive procedure.

We get rewarded very little in comparison to PvE to begin with, I don’t see why our dailies (for those that actively care) should be harder or more time consuming to achieve.

Because if you or the OP are being honest you would agree they are not difficult. The only one remotely difficult is Keep Capture. If anything I’d double or triple that reward and not remove or change it otherwise.

Boosts take care of the World EXP issue. Know what to do and it goes by in no time. Hook up with a commander, even faster. I can solo it in no time even when out numbered or playing in a matchup that we are getting steam rolled. Vets are a no brainer. You may have to travel a bit but again several choices across two maps.

I’d wager either of you probably didn’t like the original game launch and the need for the jump puzzles in WvW to count has map complete…boy, those bring back threads with alligator tears.
