Haven’t played WvW in a long time but if this is truly the end of melee blob v blob then this might get me to give it another shot!

If only it were so easy to end “blob v blob” warfare. I’m afraid you’re placing far too much weight in the update and its effects on WvW combat.

From the reactions in here it seems that melee blobs will just end in you getting chain cc’ed and killed. I’m not against large groups of players fighting each other on an open field but against 50+ people stacking on 1m² and then bullrushing headfirst into another zerg which leads to about 20 seconds of <10fps (gtx 670 and i7 3770@4.2ghz here) and praying your blob survives.

Large scale warfare is awesome. Playerclusters are not. If this updates leads to players spreading out evenly while army sizes remains the same, I’m more than happy. No slideshow, no explosion of particles, no spamming #1. Having played WoW from 2005 to 2012 and loving Alterac to death, this is exactly what I want from WvW (Only exception being that the maps are far too open and armies end up avoiding each other to cap towers instead of engaging in PvP)

Why not give an option to toggle. Considering the game caters towards casuals and I think it’s quite easy to ‘overwhelm’ some of them with decimals and ‘long numbers’ (no sarcasm – i’m genuinely sure there are people like that. The NPE was basically for that exact demographic), it would benefit everyone: people who value aesthetics more than precise information as well as those, who want the exact amount.

"No-grind philosophy"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Crovax.7854

The grind is in making those ascended mats into armor. Low level mats are either bought at insane prices of grinding the kitten out low maps praying for bags to drop since gear drops won’t be map level but character level.

Here is how I think Anet looks at this:

You need mats? Go do what you want and earn the gold to buy them. Or make a new character (if you want to) and level them, gaining the mats as you go.

This may not be your ideal solution, but the fact is you CAN do want you want (PvP, WvW, dungeons, fractals, world bosses, dynamic events) and this WILL earn you gold with which to buy whatever mats you need (with the exception of ascended, which can be aquired from drops in many different areas of the game and doing many different activities). You are not restricted to low level zones and you do not NEED to grind those zones and pray for the bags. This is a limit you have imposed on yourself, not one Anet has imposed on you.

Ascended mat acquisition, in my opinion, needs to be improved. It is getting better though, so I am not worried about this too much.

And now how it works in reality. People set them-self a goal like getting one of those items. They look what to do to get that item.. at that moment they are not interested in WvW, PvP, dungeons whatever but at there goal. To achieve this goal there is no specific content but there is gold, so gold becomes there sub-goal so the way to get to their goal would be to grind gold.

Still fine for the first item, but then the next item has the same subgoal (gold) and the 3th, and the 4th and the 5h and the 6th and…..

And that results in many people finding the game so grindy.

Where if the item / goal is behind specific content different content is the subgoal making the whole experience way more fun.

So maybe their attempt to make the game less grindy was one of the reasons the game became so grindy, and the cash-shop items (you can only get ingame by grinding gold) is the other big reason.

Well reasoned. I definitely believe the game was rebuilt around the TP as it shares a UI with the gem store.

In my opinion it’s a shame they insist on their precious ‘economy’. Diablo 3 had the same problem until Blizzard wisened up and removed the AH completely, which in return made it possible to significatnly improve the rate at which highly sought after legendaries and other rare items dropped.
Now that game is more fun and rewarding than it could’ve ever been before the loot patch.
The things the TP in GW has brought us are:
- a lot of junk and vendor items
- reliance on gold for everything, making grinding the most optimal way to obtain ‘prestigious’ (I guess they were at least meant to be) skins.
- droprates and a rewardsystem that make it possible for account with over 3k hours to never have seen a precursor if not bought from the TP.
- very long stretches of gameplay between ‘meaningful’ drops i.e. high value items/skins.
- an overall unrewarding and boring experience that makes obtaining skins seem like a dayjob or a mortage which you chip away at bit by bit.

I guess those are all very subjective but it’s how I view the TP. Blizz proved they value fun more anything. Why can’t ANet?

Looks alright but I will never buy an outfit. I know it’s less work and has less problems with clipping but in every other game I could mix-match armor pieces without a problem. It’s ANets problem they have models that are prone to clipping, not that of the players.

They just release and we’re already getting people complaining about them? I’m honestly kind of surprised. But, anyway, Azure said it best up there. Those are your best options as of now, but if you have a suggestion, lay it out constructively and tell us how it would work! That way, we can all pitch in and make the suggestion better

I thought Azure was just being sarcastic. Either that or he made really bad points :P
Basic models aren’t -to my knowledge- usable in soloQ, the mode most people play by a large margin.
Jumping maps in PvE only works if there are overflows and considerung evereybody and their mum’ running around with those things chances are you will run into a ton of players wearing them, even on other maps.
WvW server transfer? It’s not like they sell those wings on some servers and not on others. They are everywhere. Plus, why should I pay actual money just to avoid something incredibly immersion breaking. As if it’s the players fault ANet can’t create artistically coherent armor pieces.

As for suggestions: Option to hide other player’s back pieces. This is something incredibly important for players with weaker machines.
When doing worm and teq, commanders on TS always urge players to hide their fractal and other backpieces as it can crash slower PCs when added to the large amount of players in a zerg.
That way, people with faster machines don’t have to hide their armor just because others have bad PCs as they can just do it themselves.
Additionally, players who dislike certain backpieces can hide them while people who do like them still can feel pretty.
Everybody wins.

If I wanted all players to look like animu characters i’d play a korean f2p game. I know ANet will go where the money is but throwing artistic consistency out of the window?

How do they fit in lore-wise? Why would characters wear giant non functioning wings? Really ugly and don’t fit into the game and the overall art direction/design. This and all the changes to make the game easier really make it look like they are targeting the 12-16 anime cool kids demographic with their bleach and narutos and whatever.
Shame, really…

People will really complain about ANYTHING.

I think they look ugly and way over the top. They don’t fit the game in terms of armor design and look like something straight out of that one MMO with the anime wings (one of the ~1000). Great if you like them but don’t try to discredit my points. It’s just my personal opinion.

edit:I would probably be fine with that if theys weren’t all that common and more used as a reward for a legendary task that only the most dedicated/skilled players can accomplish. Instead, like many other good looking armor sets they can only be acquired through the store.
It’s more about the missed opportunity to have an epic reward for an epic challenge.

IKR, the moment i heard of the expansion i thought “dude they should have release it NOW” like they should have developped one year ago or months ago.
it’s like we are all already tired of the existing content now.

like another 7-9 months of die down. gg

They have been developing it for at last a year, perhaps longer.

It’s unlikely that it’ll release much longer than 4-5 months considering the living story (their main game feature) will be on hold until the expansion pack releases.

I mean like “annoncement” if you know what i mean, usally takes 7-9 months from the first annoncement to release a exp if not 4-5 months at least.

like FF14 they revealed their first exp almost 1 year ago and they are about to release it recently..

October 18th isn’t ‘almost 1 year ago’.

Oh. I guess I never played with a good engi then. Almost no experience with that class in PvE so I assumed since in over 2 years I never saw it happen that engis can’t carry, at least not to the extent of a guard or ele.
No need to derail anything. Just shows how small the percentage of good engis actually is. (I usually play in the 40 and 50 brackets).

Not a big fan of his but I gotta agree. A lot of interesting stuff but no BAM megafeature that brings people back. I guess the sum of its parts will make the complete package quite good and worthy of purchase (I know I will buy it!) but again, no definitive ‘must buy feature’ to bring the masses back that left during the rather lackluster and barebones LS.

Personally I would not kick a player for being bad. I have sat in 3hour mai trin fights and I blame myself just as much as I blame the bad players. If you are a good player you should be able to carry and therefore bad players should be a non issue unless of course you are not really a good player and can not carry and in which case bad player complaining about a bad player is ironic.

Mai being the exception to this rule. Some classes just don’t have enough block/reflect and condi clear to deal with here ports and swashbuckilng to carry the group.
Out of that group i’d say ele with focus and traited in water could have carried. Maybe the warrior with traited WH and banner but certainly not the thieves or the engi.

From the screen it looks like you died to the bombardement. Yeah they probably wanted to replace the weakest link to get it over with quickly. Undoebtedly a kitten move but understandable when you can’t seem to beat the boss due to one eprson being bad.

For the future, switch to shield and block her teleport attck – she always targets the person farthest away from her. If you are low on health, try to get close enough to her to manipulate the targetting.

edit: I know lvl 8 should be faceroll but it’s a miracle they got to the boss with 2 thieves and no guard :P

I had a shaman build warrior for support and buffing with banners and the war horn, it seems now form what I read that’s a worthless spec and should do something else?

I see people playing this build in the game today. What makes you feel it’s no longer effective?

Because regen and vigor are relatively useless in most of PvE where the vast majority of damage can be avoided by positioning?

Agreed, and to add…

People, most people, have enough gear to zerk down bosses without any buffs and whatnot from a ‘shaman warrior’.

This has been a core issue to your combat gameplay. Theres absolutely no need to go support in PVE because either a) mobs die too quickly, b) there are one shot abilities that take you down to half health or kill you so whats a little heal going to do in the face of that? c) people don’t stack enough to receive some of the benefits of these buffs and combo fields…

When you begin to pay attention to this and encourage actual teamplay rather than zerk and avoid bad floor, then these builds become viable.

To be fair, I can imagine one scenario where traited wh is useful: Mai Trin at levels 41+. Then again, it’s only the trait, full zerk gear is far better anyway.

If you want to play warrior support in PvE, play a phalanx build with zerker armor; decent damage, almost 100% infight uptime for 25 stacks of might for the whole group.
For defensive support you always want a guardian.

edit: two scenarios. mai trin and imbued shaman at 41+.

No matter what current method chosen, it is still light years away from your very comment that by level 80, players should have the best statistical loot in the game.

Yeah to be clear on that one, as we’ve said before: we made that statement before the game launched, ultimately realized we didn’t think it was the right decision for Gw2 – and changed our mind. I fully own making this statement, the day I said it was our plan – our lead designer decided it was the wrong direction for the game after we stated it, and we changed direction.

Sometimes plans will change, I can assure you it’s never our intention to intentionally mislead/trick anyone, that’s simply the nature of development: from time to time things we say at one point later have to change.

Hi Colin,

while i’m not always happy with all of the design decisions, i just wanted to say that this comment meant a lot for me! Huge props to you for coming forward and make a clear statement and flat out say when your vision for the game changes.

You can’t always make everybody happy with everything you do but it helps a lot when you’re this open about it. I know about your policy of not releasing a lot of information but i think players would rather know about stuff they might not be happy with instead of being left completely in the dark.

As an example: fractals. No mention of new fractals or anything in that regard during the PAX show and that’s completely understandable as it wasn’t the focus of HoT, but after months and months of people complaining about rewards and acquisition of fractal skins over in the dungeon forums, we’ve had zero red posts on that matter.

Now where the frustration comes in is when you don’t say anything. If you just came out and flat out say, that your design philosphy has shifted away from those types of content or that we shouldn’t expect changes to fractal skin droprates (0,55% for the right weapon once a day!) i’d be totally fine with it but it’s always more frustrating to feel ignored by you guys
Anyway, thanks for being this open and popping in to clarify.

Ps: I completely agree that grind isn’t mandatory, but it’s important to still make it a fun activity for when you actually want to do it! Glad you see it the same way.

I know I’m going to pre-order as soon as I have the funds and when it’s actually available for pre-order.

I’ve always been curious about you pre-order lot. The xpac will be available for download. There’s no way we will have a shortage of copies for that reason.

The only reason would be for preordering a CE since those seemed to sell out quickly for the base game.

Question: why preorder something sight unseen when it makes no difference?
Don’t get me wrong, i’ll try to preorder the CE but if that’s not possible, why not just wait for the normal version to come out?

this word. constantly popping up and ruining threads. can we be a little more creative and a bit less offensive towards “players who make an effort to play competently” please?

No, because apparently putting effort into the game and not wanting to be a burden on your teammates makes you a bad person somehow.

That’s exactly what they mean but more like 3 headed wurm but 10 times as hard as that and need more players to do it/more co-ordination and everyone to have some of the new masteries before you can even begin to think of success.

So since it’s open world everyone can participate but it’ll only work if everyone has the corresponding masteries? Sounds like it’ll work out perfectly.
The sole reason why people are asking for instanced challenges is because you don’t have to deal with randoms. ANET has to dumb down/tone down bosses so a bunch of randoms and #1spamzerglings on megaservers can beat it.
Besides, designing it for a huge zerg only makes individual contribution count even less; the exact opposite of what the dungeon crowd is asking for.

I think they were pretty clear without being specific that harder-core group PvE content is a big focus for the expansion; it’s why I’m posting here and considering playing again. It was lacking in the original game.

Today was just an announcement… let’s wait for the reveals!

Kinda in the same boat here. Colin mentioned ‘hard group content’ a lot. However that doesn’t mean it’s actually going to be hard for your above-avarage player.

Their main philosophy seems to be that even the worst of the worst can obtain almost everything if they just grind long enough and to my knowledge the fractal tonic which can be acquired at lvl50 is the only exception to that rule.
What really would get me to be hyped about the expansion is new hardcore content with a token system to prevent bad rng, less reliance on gold for rare skins and fixed fractal rewards. For crying out loud, why do we have that weapon box even in the game when it drops only on lvl 51+?!

I really hope they tried to implement content for all types of player, not just the super casual ones.
For now it’s wait and see, though I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Well Colin said they mentioned every big feature from HoT. Raids were not among them. A real bummer if you ask me; I love group content, it’s certainly better than the open world 0skill zergfest we have currently going on in 90% of the game but the lack of raids in his presentation makes me really pessimistic.

Because I’d be incredibly disappointed if they hire raid designers and don’t really utilize them for actual raids :/

I play phalanx and the build fulfills the first three of your ‘slots’. I can easily stack perma 25 might after 2-3 seconds into a fight and bring 2 banners, all of that while maintaining 100% critchance.
Good groups only need 1 warrior. Eles, mesmers, guards, engis are all good and the more diverese your group, the better.

Just a late thank you for making this. ^^

If you enjoy Fractals I’d highly recommend doing 50 and 40 daily, due to their overall higher chance and not too trouble-some Instability, especially if you pug (overall you expect people around that level to have a basic understanding.)

But if you dislike Fractals, just pick a different skin to aim for. 10-11% is still a small chance, with a chance for doubles / unwanted skin.

You are saying 40 and 50. Does that mean reward tiers start at x0? I was under the impression that 31-40 was one tier and 41-50 was another. Wouldn’t it be easier to do 31 and 41 then?

Hi everyone.
After a long hiatus I decided to give fractals another shot. My AR is at 70 so in theory I can do everything up to and including 50. Problem is, from what I’ve read, the weapon droprate after the fractal update was significantly reduced.

Is that true? If so, is there some kind of spreadsheet that includes droprates?
Lastly, is the dropchance the same for all levels in one category, i.e. 31-40, 41-50
or does it incease inside the brackets?

Thanks for your time!

tl;dr
Lying around dead also prevents people from helping others in down state or makes them forget boss mechanics for a few seconds and gets them killed to. So it’s in everyone’s interest that dead people port, no matter if upscaling or not.

Or you know… disable ressing dead people while IN COMBAT and during a boss fight. Solves everything

Your first reply to my post was complete bogus but that’s actually a pretty good solution.
edit: so since player’s aren’t able to be ressed, they might as well implement a forced WP after 10-30 seconds.

Or you can resurrect downed players and work as a group as the game had intended you to, you colossal kitten.

Timed bosses are a dps race. One dead person leads to multiple others stopping what they are supposed to do and attemp to ress, more often than not getting them cought up in aoe and dying themselves.

Think, then post, before calling others ‘colossal kitten’. The problem is far more complex than ‘ress dead players and all is well’.

No, it is not as complex as you suggest. With the amount of people in each lane by the time of an encounter, it takes all of a second to resurrect a downed player if more than one person is nearby, and oh lookie here; fancy each encounter encouraging groups of players to stick close together via the mechanics built into said encounters.

Cut off the source of your issues and they cease to exist. Be proactive rather than watch someone bleed out on the floor.

Think, then post, or even -attempt- to point out why a ‘dps race’ like this is so complex, since there’s is absolutely nothing complex about a dps race. Use the god kitten built in game mechanics to help each other through an encounter.

100% agree with suggestions on auto-release within a minute.

I will always attemp to ress a deowned player if possible. But this thread is about dead players. It’s not always possible to save someone and in cases we need something to prevent people from running in and 1) wasting time ressing the fully dead and 2) probably die in the process to aoe.

Glad we agree on the auto release though since that was the solution I proposed in my original post/thread too.

I think Anet said that dead players do not scale the event?

They said that dead player stop to count after a certain amount of time. Nobody knows how long that is. One bossphase is 4 minutes, breach lasts 5 minutes. If the server checks every 2 minutes for example, that’s half of the time we have for the boss and not nearly enough.

I already made a thread about that a couple of weeks ago
(with response from Gaile Gray)

I agree that there is a problem but not with the solution. Increasing the intervals for the servers to check how many players are still alive probably would put too much additional strain on them so I’d say forced wp after 30 seconds would be ideal.
1 minute is too long since one bossphase only lasts 4 minutes anyway.

30 seconds is more than enough to res a dead player if people want to, especially in a zerg where you have 3-4 others always in your immediate vicinity.

Plus people don’t lose out on the shaky chest since it’s accoundbound. Forcing players to realize that by removing them while still giving rewards might be a good idea.

To expand on my first post: The team size is on both ends of the spectrum i.e. 5 man to 300(?) in wvw but nothing in between. There is a reason why 5man arena was always by far the least played format in WoW and the map in WvW is far to open so the big zerg v zerg clashes are few and far between, essentially making it a borefest for 55 out of 60 minutes.

Now if they had 15v15 game modes with 2-3 maps, that would make my probably play all day long for the next couple of months! So basically: spvp too competitive, wvw too boring.

Suffered through tourneys until I got the champ titles I wanted. Never again. The small scale combat is the exact opposit of what I want from a PvP format. It’s basically the Call of Duty as opposed to what I hoped would be Battlefield.
WvW has incredible performance problems and the open maps make it more of a player versus structure with some PvE mixed in.

Before I bought the game, I hoped I’d get another alterac in the GW2 engine; Just like WvW but in a narrow corrider where the opposing factions have to fight each other in order to win. God I miss alterac

Thanks for all the answers. I guess that means I’ll lean towards direct damage with a bit of condi mixed in for additional utility!

YEAH!!! Thank you, Anet!!!

Ele nerfs as usual… And why buff KillShot? seriously… Can we at least get Ride The Lightning and Mist form back to how they were before?

Don’t worry. Still nobody will use rifle, even with that change. But hurray for (an attempted) rush fix!

Hi everyone.

It’s been a long time since I played d/d and ele in general. Now I wanted to try something different and run d/d in the open world and as my solo pve specc. Only problem is: I don’t have cele gear. Only zerk armor with 1 ‘wildcard’ from the lumi collection.
Accessoires consist of some random rings from fractals as well as the cond/pow/prec and the tou/vit/heal pieces from the LS and 1 unassigned mawdrey.

My question is: I’m trying to gear my char so the stat distribution is as even as possible but if that’s not possible, will most of my damage be direct or via condis?
I’m basically trying to run the standard spvp specc.

Thanks

Trading post basically unusable, lost a lot of gold because it told me an error occured.
Bought the same stuff again, with another error. Later I had all of the gold removed at once and received all the items that the system told me couldn’t be purchased. Thanks…

edit: just checked and I didn’t even receive all the stuff I order but the TP took as much gold as if I had. Wow, great…

Very good fight. Though I have to say, waiting for the other two lanes to finish isn’t really all that fun. The actual fights are awesome but that’s unfortunately only 1/3 of the whole encounter for a lane. The rest is basically waiting and killing mobs that don’t give loot.

Maybe the (very talented) devs could have a look and try to improve in that regard.

There’s always the squad channel that you can use, all you have to do is get people to join you as a commander and then you wont have this problem.

You expect the average zergling to make an actual effort that requires more than spam 1? I’ve been commanding worldbosses for quite some time now and that seems rather excessive :/
Don’t make commanders immune to spam filters but up the limit before filtering messages out and remove the filter from LFG for easier taxiing.

Just as bad as not being able to put up a party description for LFG after providing a few taxis.
