If you cba to do Personal Story, map completion or events to get your traits – and you’re too cheap to buy them – well, sucks for you. Personally, I think it just weeds out the people who want a handout from the people who actually care to build their characters.

I was talking about the value of taking a game that is clearly not meant to be another game, and saying it’s not like the other game.

It’s like taking a green apple and saying it’s not a red apple.

brings nothing to the table.

However, unlike a green apple, GW2 can be changed, not just completely redesigned to be GW1 – but it can be changed. A green apple, on the other hand, will always be a green apple. Even if they paint it red, it is still a green apple.

GW2 isn’t stagnant and can include changes and new features.

No, this would just further stratify expert players from inexpert players.

And that’s a bad thing because…?

Designing rewards that scale better based off of competency, skill and organizational tasks (such as guild formation) seems like a great idea to me – and I’m a terrible player that could never benefit from such an implementation. I feel it’s only fair to the players that actually put the effort in to become expert players. The fact that I, a random scrub, makes as much gold as any of the best players in the game (that don’t work the TP market) screams inadequacy of rewarding players for going out of their way to be better.

Actually, they’re making changes based on what fans have been asking for (such as permanent LS content and no time limits for achievements). And many of the players asking are Guild Wars 1 players. Logically then, they are adding the stuff that is being asked about by Guild Wars 1 players. However, there is nothing any place in Guild Wars 1 like Dry Top. Nothing at all.

There is – I went back and looked around the Maguuma Jungle when LS2 was introduced. It does look similar. Since GW1, did not have jump and did not have up and down, that is why it feels different.

Maybe aesthetically. Dry Top has been there for some time, it would make sense that it’s still around. The dragons may have altered the landscape but they didn’t just completely redefine it.

However that’s still pretty far off from the same design – especially when you look at the core gameplay (such as combat).

It is 250 years in the future – with the Elder Dragons rising – things probably would change – look at Ascalon…..

Ascalon seems to be on the road to recovery – minus the obvious influence of Kralkatorrak’s corruption.

It wasn’t always a smoldering wasteland, that was just post-Searing. I guess I am a bit surprised though that after 250 years it wouldn’t be as green and lush as pre-Searing Ascalon.

If you’re approaching it as a topic of, say, geographical location – I think that is more of an issue with oversight and just a complete redesign of a landscape than any actual changes that happened lore-wise.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of luck to find a massive group coordinated enough to participate at some level. Personally, I think the massive world events are bad – not conceptually, but just as a design. The problem with it stems from the lack of coordination and organization someone can do – even if you try to organize, people won’t always listen/care – they’re there to play the game they want to play.

Simple solution is pretty simple – allow guilds to purchase instance tickets from the gem store (oh no, gem store items) – 2000 gems (gold to gem conversion is still a thing). It can be a collaborated, guild effort to purchase a private instance to complete large scale events in without the hassle of randoms that want to (and should be able to) play their own way.

Furthermore, change drop rates a bit. Would need a complete overhaul, but I’m sure most of the community would be willing to accept some changes unless they are blinded by their own shortcomings. Something like Gold Blitz shouldn’t be significantly more rewarding than the Gauntlet. Likewise they could offer this sort of principle in dungeons as well – having starting bases of, say, around 1% for rare drops (such as Precursors) that lowers for every person in the party. Then, somebody who solo’d Arah would have a much higher chance of obtaining a Precursor or any other Exotics than someone who simply found a PUG.

The best is yet to come.

So more massacres, mayhem, and destruction in your words. Why is that since the start of this Living World (although I may risk saying that there were signs of this in the vanilla game as well) the only way you guys seem to be able to drive the story forward is through mass killings and calamities (that often draw parallels with real life modern attacks on innocents)?

Remember this picture attached to the Story Journal reveal page? I can’t decide whether it’s hilarious, ridiculous, or outrageously imbecile and depressing that it’s a spot-on summary of your entire storytelling to date…

Pfft. Don’t be a hater! Plus, it’s really hard/boring to design game content that doesn’t have some central point to mass mayhem and killing. Something like The King’s Speech or Roots wouldn’t exactly make satisfying game models unless you think “pressing F to run to an airport and get your girlfriend back” sounds like a game…

It’s pretty hard to make interactive media to tell a story that doesn’t include action or violence.

You want variety – well, we have variety. Sort of. I will not lie and say I do not have my doubts about the success of it – but there is mystery that shrouds The Pale Tree, the Sylvari and even the Zephyrites. Just because Mordremoth is the center of the destruction in this Living Story, that hardly makes the dragons any central character yet. Of course, they should be. It would be stupid to not make include them at some point. Dragons shouldn’t just magically disappear.

And that’s just involving Mordremoth. When we push onto other dragons, we might see more variety. Such as some (more) information about Jotun and the Sons of Svanir when we fight Jormag; and when Kralkatorrak (or whatever the name of him is) becomes the central dragon of fighting, we might see some closure with the Palawa Joko storyline and start pushing into Elonian territory.

Primordius will eventually also come around – I’m not sure what we’d see with him, but you get the point with the previous examples.

I think, the key is, that the story is diverse if you don’t let the “dragons, dragons, dragons!” mentality ruin your POV.

Just my 2 cents regarding the 'cassual' LS

in Living World

I think some of what you say is just nonsense, OP.

There are achievements to acquire in the game – associated with the Living Story.

The story itself is not going to get more difficult or longer to satisfy any segment of the playerbase, ANet designed AP so you can be happy. If you don’t want to do the “hardcore” content they offer you, that’s your prerogative – nobody else’s.

I found the LS2 to be a success so far. The story was immersive (short, but immersive – and why shouldn’t it be short? It’s like an episode of a TV series – it only runs for 22-48 minutes per week anyway), it wasn’t stupidly short like Season 1 where the “Living Story” was like two sentences for two weeks. Like, we wont’ tell a chapter at a time – just a paragraph.

So…I don’t know. I think you need to find the prerogative in yourself to enjoy doing the achievements or to go explore other aspects of the game still – have you acquired every Legendary? Have you maxed all of the PvP tracks? There’s a lot do in the game for somebody who will take the responsibility to know that not everything is tailored exactly to their wants and needs and sometimes stuff just doesn’t work for you but it works for others.

You might have a problem with the Living Story being casual – but I think that’s exactly how it should be.

I wholeheartedly agree, the first episode of this Season was a HUGE improvement on Season 1. I just played it and loved the story. Made me gleeful to actually play Guild Wars 2 again.

IMO, it was just the right amount of content too. Had they tried splitting up this story into the multitude of different sections at 2-week intervals, it would’ve been such a dead crawl I would be disappointed.

Say what you want, Aerin seems more like a plot staple for something bigger – not necessarily a villain like Scarlet. I have a hunch the Master of Peace is up to something and we may see a human as the main antagonist for Season 2.

I don’t see why not have a little bit of The Pale Tree and Scarlet in the story though. Mursaat, those underwater things I can never the name of, and Seers also have some room for exploitation at some point within the story. The other races, however, have a bit too much lore and background to justify any large magnitude changes.

I think with the Zephyrites and Master of Peace in Season 2, we’ll see a bit more than just some crazy Sylvari.

Eh, it would probably cost more than that due to how much the gem:gold ratio would drop after so many gem purchases. However, yeah, it takes about $400-$500 to get a Legendary. Tbh, though, I would imagine if someone had that kind of money they aren’t playing Guild Wars 2…if I had $500 to spare, I sure as kitten wouldn’t.

What does your access to disposable income have to do with what games you play? I could drop $500 on a legendary if I really thought it was important enough. I just never would because of course it isn’t.

Having the kind of disposable income to spend $500 without seriously considering the ramifications just leans toward a wealthier culture. I’m sure they might still dabble in GW2, but with that kind of money I imagine someone would probably invest in something a bit more collaborative to, I don’t know, their social health? Belonging to clubs, theater and owning offsite vacation spots are just a few ideas.

It wouldn’t apply to everyone, obviously – but it’s apply to a majority. That agf crap doesn’t really fly on game forums.

The lion’s-share of taxes in the US are paid by the top 10%. The top 1% pay something like 30% of the taxes, and the bottom 50% pay nothing.

Now there’s all kinds of discussion to be had about the US economy and that analogy

I sure hope you don’t major in economics.

My rich friends in GW2 have over 20k AP and don’t spend time faffing about on forums, or complaining that the can only play X hours per day. In fact my richest friend works 40 hours a week, has 5 legendaries, and still finds time to play his guitar (he’s really good).

Maybe he uses income from that 40 hours per week to fuel his game. Or maybe he only plays Guild Wars 2 and doesn’t focus on anything like a social life, a relationship, kids, movies, other games, books, television…

Your logical fallacy is anecdotal.

Also rich people can buy their legendary without effort at all, it only costs like $400 per legendary with gems.

GW1’s balancing just got broken because there were so many skills, so little time and too little effort.

The more skills they added to GW1, the harder it became to balance, but also the more interesting it became. Balance problems are almost an unavoidable side effect of having a complex combat system.

On top of that, there were the dual professions, and PVE and PvP to consider. Since balance issues are usually felt the hardest in PvP, most balancing often revolved around PvP first and foremost. But a skill-change for PvP, may have a bad effect on the same skill in PVE. And thus at some point they started splitting the skills for PvP and PVE. But once you go down that road, there’s no end to it.

I think you’ll have balance problems no matter what. MMO’s are big beasts, with a meta that is often in motion. The multitude of skills in GW1 may have attributed to balance problems, but it was also what kept a lot of players experimenting.

Yeah. Based on what was coming out in GW1 (BMP, WiK, Hearts of the North, WoC) I was thinking GW2 would see something a lot similar to GW1 mechanics with a complete overhaul on the skill system – having 300+ different elite skills alone make balancing an astronomical nightmare. Had they been able to condense skills to something as limited as GW2, I imagine balancing would’ve got over a lot smoother.

Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.

When was the last time anyone had 1000 skill points? I hate the idea of “an appropriate amount of grind.” IMO, there is no such thing!

No. MMOs, actually – RPGs in general, aren’t designed to reward rarity without some amount of grind. With the 10 Clover recipe it’s fairly easy to get some T6 mats and some of the materials can be acquired at much cheaper prices using T5 conversions.

I’m not sure what games everyone else has been coming from but I can guarantee I haven’t played a RPG that rewarded anything of value that easily.

“RPGs in general, aren’t designed to reward rarity without some amount of grind.” is some weapons grade bullkitten.

Find one RPG that doesn’t require any amount of grind to obtain “rarity.” Just one.

There’s a grind in every RPG, ever. Legendaries are the grind of GW2. Deal with it.

I still support Precursor crafting, because I think having a very specific and established recipe and acquisition should be important when going for something so rare and valuable, but the rest of Legendary acquisition is just a simple grind – it’s not RNG and hope and luck…it’s work.

Why? Because other aspects, aside from the Precursor, can be obtained very specifically. It still requires a teenie bit of luck, but it’s specific. Such as karma, mystic coins, even laurels if you want to use them – skill points, direct gold, etc. It’s specific, it’s an ingredient and it’s not just based on dumb luck.

I can’t believe this thread is still going.

GW2 is still catered to a casual and easygoing market – because nobody wants to play a game where they have be some epic pro to do well. The beauty of GW2 is that a bearbow or cleric’s staff guard can go into any dungeon and complete it – maybe not in 20 minutes, but they can complete it.

Improvement requires experimentation and research – there’s really too much information to jam into the game. Such as dodging, people know what it is – doesn’t make them good at it.

I trashed some whites a couple of years ago :s

Had to think about that a bit (been a while since i played GW1), but, the value of gold coin in GW1 is not the same as in GW2.

In GW1 u start with gold coin, and 1000 gold coins is 1 platinum coin.
And 1k became short for 1 platinum coin.
So, 1k gold coins in GW1 is not much really.

Yeah, the value of gold is extremely different. Even then, though, the market in Guild Wars 1 just plain sucks now. It’s not really worth trying to build a fortune. Absolutely. Just by playing the campaigns (which is worth it for the story) and possibly even Guild Wars: Beyond (which the story is definitely worth it) you should have anywhere between 5 and 10 HoM points.

That’s just for playing the game.

I agree with Grimm, though – don’t buy it solely for the armor skin. It’s worth playing, but not worth playing if all you want is a skin.

This means you must have a character at level 10 (Level 40 equivalent in GW2)

Eh…not even remotely the equivalent. I mean…the leveling from 1-20 in Guild Wars was trivial at best, especially later on. Factions and Nightfall can get someone to level 10-15 within a few hours if they just complete all of the quests along the way. Thousands of XP as a reward just made leveling a breeze.

Scarlet.
Maybe that’s why I’m one of the few who liked that character (excluding how she was introduced) :|

I actually kind of liked her too. Granted, I felt they could have done a lot better with her, I felt the player and Scarlet really needed to get off to a worse start and perhaps even really build a rival. I know she was just the pawn for Act 1, but I would really like to have an arch-nemesis in this game that taunted you and was really there rather than some man behind the curtain the whole time.

I mean, there is a reason that some of the most famous villains (The Joker, Sephiroth, Wesker, Zinyak) and even Guild Wars villains (namely Shiro and Minister Reiko) seem “better” than other villains and that’s because they build a bit of a relationship with the player – they build a protagonist/antagonist relationship with some real direct confrontation before the “final showdown.”

For the most part, I imagine if people thought about their favorite villain in a video game they would realize the villain was somebody who communicated with them – someone who was there. They taunted the hero, they rejected the hero, they built the hero in so much of a sense. The dragons don’t fit that bill.

After reading through all these comments, i’m not sure who was the one talking about how it’s not a grind of you really want the Legendary: Yes, it is a grind. No matter what you say or how you think about getting that weapon, it will still cost the same and it will still take long to get it.

Then reevaluate your priorities. Honestly, it’s a broken record. If it’s something you really want, it won’t be a grind. It won’t happen in a day – but it’ll be about two or three months at least if you manage what you currently have. The road to a Precursor can be a grind but that’s crappy RNG which has been debated for a while.

If you really don’t have the time to manage that, I fail to see why you’re complaining. Seems like you should just uninstall the game because obviously your life is so full that any amount of timely effort is beneath you.

I see someone is upset, just don’t know why. Did you really expect everyone to say “Ooohh you have a Legendary, you are awesome!!44!” ?

My point still stands: It won’t change anything about the way to acquire the needed mats/items if you really want that weapon. It just won’t. It’s still considered a grind, especially when Legendaries are not even special anymore, since a lot of people run around with them.

Also, complaining? Where did i complain? I reacted to your dumb comments, which failed to make any sense so far, and you just outright failed to understand my own comments. Please, just try to get yourself in a better shape, or just don’t even post.

Why would I want anyone to ogle over my Legendary? I didn’t get it for other people, I got it for me – and that’s the point: If you get something for yourself it’s not so much of a grind and more or less a goal.

All of your posts about how much of a grind Legendary is seems to be just a constant complaint of how much of a grind it is. Except a grind’s subjective – and if someone feels like it’s a grind there’s an amount of self-awareness and evaluation they need to look into. A game shouldn’t feel grindy, even something as massive of a goldsink as a Legendary – if it’s something a person truly wants, the grindy feeling diminishes.

From the very OP you just complained about a grind that most people who have worked on Legendary weapons haven’t felt. Thus, the problem is likely with you and not with the so-called “grind.”

I’ve gone to far personally to turn back now Im close to completing my final gift mastery and just need to karma farm the rest of the shards for it. And Get Dusk which I am not looking forward to grinding gold for the next 3 years to aquire but I feel at this point if I don’t finish it I’ve wasted my time so if your gonna start making one then I suggest finishing it. It wouldn’t be so horrible if pre’s didnt have a zero % drop rate but it just seems to me some people get tons of them and I wonder if the RNG like Flags accounts or something.

Ive always wondered that too. Whether or not its real, though, it is a good tactic to do nonetheless.

Having a handful of accounts that get precursors regularly will eventually make them craft Legendaries to put on the market along side their excess precursors. Then everyone else can have horrible luck trying to get them as a drop (which will never happen in their life). This will make it more likely for people to spend money on gems in order to obtain them. It sucks. :I

OMG, flagging people who have a history of purchasing gems to have a slightly unluckier RNG table…

They probably don’t. However with all of the weird kitten that developers will do nowadays, it wouldn’t surprise me if this happened.

Don’t get a Legendary for the sake of having a Legendary – get a Legendary that you love, cherish and truly want. It will take away the “grindy” feeling.

Except that’s totally not true. Even if you truly want a Legendary, it will still be grindy to get it.

Maybe you need to reevaluate what you see in the Legendary? As it goes: check yoself before you wreck yoself.

Precursor acquisition is still a problem and there have been several threads about it – hopefully we’ll see Precursor crafting someday.

Still, on the flipside to this, the point is static: If you really want something, it won’t be grindy. If it feels like a grind, it calls for a reevaluation of your wants. It’s why you have to stick to “grinding” for stuff that you want, not grinding for the sake of having something valuable. My Mad Moon and Twilight are treasures to me and were totally worth it. I would also like to get The Dreamer someday if I can find use for shortbow. I’m not going out getting Kudzu or Bolt or Eternity or The Juggernaut though…because I do not want them. Some people might be different – maybe they want Kudzu and think Twilight’s pointless.

The key is figuring out what you want. Not everyone wants a legendary – but for those that do, the grind is just any other grind.

Well…yes? Except also no.

I love my Twilight. I didn’t start the grind for the legendary factor of the legendary – I started the grind because kitten, I wanted Twilight.

I also did this when I wanted The Mad Moon. I’ll also likely do this if there’s an armorset I really desire for my warrior.

Grinding isn’t a problem, grinding doesn’t make you like or dislike the game more – it’s all about what an individual wants. Don’t get a Legendary for the sake of having a Legendary – get a Legendary that you love, cherish and truly want. It will take away the “grindy” feeling.

If there isn’t a Legendary you love, cherish and truly want – congratulations, don’t get a Legendary.

WvW armors can't be salvaged

Up until EotM, I always thought WvW armor should’ve been salvageable. Now with EotM though my view has changed because badges drop like hotcakes in there.

ok then
nerf badges in eotm.
allow wvw armour to be salvageable.

Yeah, if badges in EotM were on the same scale as badges from regular WvW – WvW items should be salvageable in a heartbeat.

Shouldn’t occur now just due to how easy it is to obtain badges in the current EotM structure – where every single cap guarantees badges and some empyreal fragments (dragonite ore for the keeps). In just 2 weeks someone can get 10,000+ badges fairly easily. At least before EotM, badges were about as scarce as dungeon tokens because it really required riding out WvW for a while.

Need to change the precedent before making something salvageable though.

Can I get a turban to further enhance my “genie” look?

Maybe pants that will make my legs disappear and it will look like as if I’m floating … purely cosmetic of course.

Ideas welcome btw, I might even play with his beard and hair.

If you have a makeover kit:

No. No. No.

If you want AP, it’s your prerogative to find a way to get them. Honestly, the people who don’t have the time to acquire 10-16k AP are usually people with enough going on to not give a kitten that they don’t have 10-16k AP.

There’s no difference, it’s mostly perspective from size. It also can look like Asura jump higher than Norn or Charr.

I think people just aren’t being realistic.

People aren’t being realistic when they want to form a SC PUG at their convenience. What’s your point?
