Light armor isn’t the only weight that’s lacking some real variation. One solution I’ve found that worked for me (at least with cosmetic variation) is to make my characters according to the biconics – since their armorsets just go so kitten well with races and classes.

Norn warrior – Braham’s armor skin
Charr warrior – T3
Human guardian – T3
Norn ranger – T3
Asuran elementalist – T3
Sylvari thief – T3
Human mesmer – Phoenix

I own Trickster’s gear too, but I don’t like the necromancer class enough to buy a character slot.

My take on the play-your-way system

Wall of text but I stopped at the whole Bull’s Strike thing. If you were a warrior using Bull’s Strike in the GW1 metagame, you weren’t doing the metagame right to begin with. Which, really, this is where the play-your-way chimes in. GW2 is designed to have a metagame and still be completed by how other people play – the metagame doesn’t necessarily finish content, just finishes content faster. That’s key.

The fact that I can run around with an ele camping air for Lightning Whip or use bearbow on my ranger or, if I wanted, use swordhorn/dual axes/sword and board/staff mesmer for PvE content makes play-your-way viable. Which is a nice bonus for me, because I love using this stuff for cosmetic/cosplay purposes.

It doesn’t require specialization to complete – although it does require people to have some idea of what they are doing. When you run across a player who’s not very good, there’s a strong likelihood even if you gave them a good build they wouldn’t be very good.

I’m not really sure. I feel like it’s a bit of a stiff for people who grabbed hold of a good name early. Yet it’s still not very fair to active players if someone who will never touch the game again has a name they want. Perhaps they could use 365 days (1 year) + 2 week grace. After 365 days of inactivity, ANet sends these players an email regarding the situation. If they have interest in playing, the email will prompt them to visit GW2 or message Customer Support if they don’t want your proposed mandatory name change, and they’ll have 2 weeks before it takes into effect.

It might help to weed out the people who simply haven’t logged on for a year vs. the people who will likely never log on again.

My “if wishes were horses” changed would be do close the gap between high, medium and low HP professions by 25% from top and bottom, but that’s a general game mechanic wish and not Ele specific.

I liked how in GW1 everyone had the same health and it changed according to the upgrades you ran with your armor and weapons. I could see the game being different if an elementalist and warrior had the same amount of health (maybe 15k being the base health for a level 80) and any decision to get more health required Vitality.

-snip-

(some spoiler alerts might be contained within)

I think we can get our enemy fill within the subplots. The dragons are just ominous harbingers of destruction – the catalyst for the cycle of death and rebirth. It’s a kind of enemy that needs to be addressed. I think of Terry Pratchett’s books:

Noble dragons don’t have friends. The nearest they can get to the idea is an enemy who is still alive.

Down there are people who will follow any dragon, worship any god, ignore any inequity. All out of a kind of humdrum, everyday badness. Not the really high, creative loathsomeness of the great sinners, but a sort of mass-produced darkness of the soul. Sin, you might say, without a trace of originality. They accept evil not because they say yes, but because they don’t say no.

But we were dragons. We were supposed to be cruel, cunning, heartless and terrible. But this much I can tell you, we never burned and tortured and ripped one another apart and called it morality.

Then there was another line I couldn’t find but it was something about the nature of a dragon vs. the nature of an assassin. A dragon was big, it was menacing. But an assassin turned a corner and blended in with the crowd – a dragon couldn’t do that.

It’s just interesting, I think, to get different perspectives. While the dragons might be the big bad – we have some interesting characters and subplots that haven’t been explored completely (which I think would be better if they had just released this story as a continuous story in an expansion). When you think about it, we have the Master of Peace, the situation with Belinda (and, more specifically, her ghost that's interestingly at Fort Salma), Rytlock's disappearance, the situation with Taimi and the Council (they seem to REALLY dislike her). It’s interesting to have these fleshed out characters to balance the genuine, simple evil that is a force of destruction.

They might not be as fleshed out as The Joker or Albert Wesker or Sephiroth but these characters also don’t quite have the same degree of ability to be worked with. Having all of these go down simultaneously is a bit interesting, and feels genuine to the story. Sort of reminds me of the Batman: Arkham games – I feel like their ability to intertwine all of Gotham’s characters made the game feel stronger and more genuine than just having Batman focus on one particular villain’s mayhem.

GW1 players how do you feel?

Cuddy.6247

Am I the only person who has played GW1 that feels that a lot of the lore of the series …

I never play an MMO for the story (tbh i think very few do), i have offline games for that.

Played GW1, Ragnarok, Aion, Lineage 2, Perfect World and some other which i dont even remember the name anymore, i never care about story , most of the time it´s a wall of text that i just skip by spaming the “next” button.

Guild Wars has one of the best told stories, a really well-crafted world that ties in with its lore. ANet really spent a lot of time crafting Tyria. With that in mind, though, I’m not naive enough to try and compare this game’s story to BioShock, Kingdom Hearts, Infamous, God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Final Fantasy, etc. The game has a beautifully crafted story but sure as hell isn’t one of those games that is a story in playable form.

Advice for roaming air build?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Cuddy.6247

Cuddy.6247

First off, this is mostly just a roaming build – so it doesn’t need metagame strategies since everything works with roaming and story.

Anyway, so I’ve always wanted to run an elementalist with D/D focusing in air because I love the skill Lightning Whip, makes me think of Whiplash (the Mickey Rourke version). However, I’m not fond of elementalists in general – they’re hard to manage, they have low healthpools, and their utility skills make me cringe.

With that said, I’ve had some discussion with someone who is pretty good at the game has led me to conclude something that work for me for this situation would be 0/6/0/2/6 (2 in Water is for Vitality, not necessarily the Cantrip Recharge rate).

So with everything that’s been said in mind, any suggestions for how I might better improve this build for me? Stat combos, different utilities, some tweaks to traits, different runes – anything really as long as it accomplishes the goal of not being a 10k health zerker ele not using Lightning Whip.

NOT IMPROVE TO MATCH METAGAME, IN CASE SOMEBODY CAN’T READ.

I feel like ANet should’ve just released Living Story as an expansion and scrapped the whole “no expansions” notion. I think expansions simply do a better job – being able to provide a fluid story with no pauses or breaks. LS2 will be okay, I can imagine playing through again when the whole thing is released will be a blast – but the biweekly updates to the story aren’t as fun as the whole experience.

I haven’t checked it out in the gem store, but if it has unlimited uses I’d say it’s a pretty decent item. Would save a helluva lot for a level 80 that ran world bosses/dungeons/events. If it’s a charge per stone, then it’s pretty useless.

Please not the wings. They’re ugly. I’d rather see some more backpiece skins come out in the gem store, through crafting or through token rewards – or permanent living story add-ons. Just not those wings, any backpiece skins but those wings.

i play GW for 9+ years and i say you talk BS, they eventually made an NPC that rewards players with a hat when collecting a stack of even items like candy cane shards or candy corn.

After, like, 8 years.

7 actually, they also never asked to do a full set of titles for the reward, be there and you have the hat.
if they did that exactly the way GW1 did then i could understand the exclusively but since they locked it away behind a huge achievement grind and the achievements can’t be done anymore i now side with adding the wings back in the game as reward.
heck, add them like they did with the rest, takes quite a bit of time and laurels can only be gained ones a day i see no reason to keep them out.

I imagine they’ll add the wings back whenever they work out the kinks in the Story Journal to include S1 as well…(if they ever work out the kinks).

Fractal Armor/Tourney Armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think you hit the nail on the head though with your own comment: there is a myriad of players who play Fractals.

The exclusivity of the Tournament armor would allow the Tournament players to showcase themselves – because, unlike Fractals, winning the Tournament is extremely exclusive. A Legendary weapon or some Ascended crafting materials don’t necessarily cut it for how exclusive that honor is.

I think, on the other hand, that it just returns to the issue that a lot of people have – whether or not it’s in armor skins, weapon skins, skills, classes, etc. – but we could use some serious expansion to this game.

GW1 = more build diversity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Cuddy.6247

Cuddy.6247

I don’t think GW1 had more build diversity – at least not in the metagame scheme of things. The primary difference is that it had the trinity – which basically created 2 more roles and thus tripled the size of the metagame. Take the GW1 metagame and then remove everything that isn’t even remotely part of the GW2 vision and you have about the same size of build diversity.

You don’t have SoLS healers, UA/HB monks, Panic mesmers, Imbagons, ST rits, T1/2/3, MoP etc. These are roles that don’t work within the GW2 game.

And that list isn’t all-inclusive.

EotM match fixing

Cuddy.6247

I never quite knew how to respond to EotM. Nothing about what they do bothers me, yet they still bother me. After reading the reddit post for a while and contemplating, I realized what bothered me.

These people don’t run ktrains, spy, organize attacks/siege/defense for the joy of it – they do it to spite commanders they don’t like and zergs that don’t do what they want.

Essentially, this guild is filled with vindictive children that throw temper tantrums every time something doesn’t go the way they want it to. When anyone acts out of such spite toward other people, they’ll usually carry other negative features – it’s basically the horns effect. I find more negativity in them because the little they do act out on is negative.

If anyone else were actually doing what they were doing, though, I would imagine they were just playing EotM.

How does my character know Mordremoth?

in Living World

Posted by: Cuddy.6247

Cuddy.6247

I imagine it’s all a conclusion. There are some references to six elder dragons (and the name Mordremoth is as meaningless as any other name – why is Zhaitan named Zhaitan?). The player character has a bunch of little blocks to work with:

*Dragons feed off of magic (the entire Personal Story led us to this conclusion)
*Leylines are like rivers of magic across Tyria (Season 1)
*Scarlet had seen something in Omadd’s Machine (Season 1)
*Scarlet had FOUND a leyline and was going out further, trying to disrupt it (Season 1 & 2)
*There’s a probability for a 6th dragon (in-game dialogue and Inquest)

Really at that point, the player just takes shots in the dark. What would be even more interesting, however, is letting our character build a story – and then make that story completely wrong. Throughout the Personal Story and the Living Story so far our character has been a superlative genius with inductive reasoning. I think it would be much more human if they turned out to be wrong about something that caused something fatal to happen – such as any of our friends getting killed.

What i want from GW2's first huge "xpac"

Cuddy.6247

  1. A new race [snip] That’s a lot of new stuff to put in.

It would be a lot of stuff, but necessarily new. There’s a lot of untapped regions (lore-wise and GW1-wise) that ANet could easily implement into starting zones and such. The Maguuma Jungle, the Far Shiverpeaks (as far as I know, most of where we’ve traveled has just been the Southern Shiverpeaks), Crystal Desert, Kourna, Istan…

As for the rest of it, it’s really not as enormous as you imply it is. Expansions are extremely common in MMOs and with 300+ employees, I’m sure ANet has some teams developing some stuff. I can’t imagine they’d have so many developers and only produce what they do…that would be a sign of a true internal crisis.

2) One or Two additional classes. Like Bard/ Ministrel or Sumoner

6) New weapons and more weapons combination – like Lance, Whip, Scythe and etc.

Honestly I think if they implement #6 correctly, we wouldn’t need #2. I think this game doesn’t even need additional classes – the 8 classes we have are extremely universal. It would just be nice to have some more weapons/skills/traits in the future to play the classes differently. A bard/Ministrel or Summoner could easily fit to a Mesmer and Necromancer, respectively, if they simply expand what each class can do.

With credit card information being stored server-side now, I’m sure they have security measures that will lock down servers when they are attacked – much like how Sony was shut down for 2-3 weeks ~4 years ago after a 20 minute DDoS. It’s all about the fiscal security, which should be the #1 priority.

It is NOT a fallacy that x=y is one of the solutions, however.

Yes it is. If it’s the equation that I’m thinking of, the penultimate to the “solution” is as follows:

(2+2-[9/2])² = (5-[9/2])²

Which they falsely simplify to 2+2-(9/2) = 5-(9/2)

A proper simplification is (-1/2)² = (1/2)² which is true.

You can’t simplify x²=y² to x=y. That’s not know squaring works. I don’t really care if anyone wants to think it can be a solution, just know that what you think is wrong.

Ok back to the point
How long did it take to release guild wars 1 first expansion?
Let’s start by dates
Guild wars was released 2005 FULL classic map
Guild wars factions was released April 2006 FULL map with new classes
Guild wars night fall was released October 2006 FULL map with new classes
Guild wars eye of north was released 2007

By releasing the expansions so close together, ANet also exhausted most of their aces and had to rush development of Guild Wars 2 in 2011.

I do think, however, having an expansion every other year or so would make for a better game. Plus, it would offer a huge monetary cushion. In between years could have Living Story – similar to how Guild Wars Beyond played out.

I highly doubt ANet will be able to profit if everyone decides the slow digital releases aren’t worth waiting for anymore.

Skipping anything – Kholer, the gravelings, oozes. There are several adds that people skip for the hell of it and I find if you don’t kill them, Detha’s likely to bug. I imagine it is an issue with her never truly getting out of “combat mode” and getting stuck in some sort of in-between Twilight Zone phase – while it’s certainly a bug, it can be avoided by just stacking in a corner and killing 2 trash mobs.

The only people who have a “right” to complain about it would, potentially, be PvP players. However they get all of the first 12 traits in each line for free as it is.

What “game mode” are people being forced to play that they don’t enjoy that was any different prior to the update?

It’s not so much game mode as it is parts of the game. Not all PvE players enjoy EVERYTHING in PvE, because PvE encompasses a lot of stuff.

There’s not a single MMO, ever, that won’t have some cross-over. That’s just mindless, erratic stupidity.

So it’s a bug that it’s not always happening ?

If you go back and kill the monsters it probably won’t fix this. Nor will killing Kohler and take the WP.

It doesn’t fix it, but the way to prevent the bug is by just killing stuff. I’ve had a 100% success rate in AC path 2 by killing Kholer and the skippable mobs. I’ve never had this problem with Detha when I didn’t skip stuff and just killed things – Kholer, the gravelings and the oozes.

Although to “fix” the self-imposed bug, pulling oozes to kill Detha while the players stay out of the way and let her die sometimes works.

This bug should certainly be fixed, but if you don’t want Detha to bug in AC path 2, DO THE kitten CONTENT.

Step 1. Go outside
Step 2. Go to any store.
Step 3. Look at how many other sales are in the world.
Step 4. Quit QQing.

But I’d like to see options to unlock them instead of having to play a game mode you don’t enjoy.

I never understood this argument. Even for people who are WvW players you have to level up as if it were PvE and unless you do EotM ktrain you aren’t likely to get so many badges to pay for full exotic gear appropriate for WvW. The only people who have a “right” to complain about it would, potentially, be PvP players. However they get all of the first 12 traits in each line for free as it is.

What “game mode” are people being forced to play that they don’t enjoy that was any different prior to the update?

but find the implementation to be poor.

That’s because it is. ANet needs to relook at where certain traits are acquired – locking certain master traits behind content designed for people with fully traited builds seems like a Catch 22.

That doesn’t make the system bad though, just flawed.

You can buy the trait too, just visit a mesmer trainer.

If you cba to do Personal Story, map completion or events to get your traits – and you’re too cheap to buy them – well, sucks for you. Personally, I think it just weeds out the people who want a handout from the people who actually care to build their characters.

I’m guessing you were one of those who were grandfathered in?

Four characters were grandfathered in, three characters are undergoing the new trait system. I found absolutely nothing wrong with the new trait system – my mesmer was a bit of a pain but even before the trait changes mesmer was painful in regards to leveling.

I fail to see the point, though. WvW has always been linked to PvE and changing the acquisition of traits in PvE by doing PvE content just makes sense. In PvP they are still given freely, except for the 13th major trait in each line – even to newly created characters. Doing PvE content to unlock PvE versatility just seems like such a no-kitten concept I am surprised anyone actually finds the complaints legitimate.
