Honestly couldnt care less if these changes will be useful in top end PvP. Top end PvP is played by what, 200-500 people at most? No reason at all to balance the game around them since GW2 is not and will never be the eSport they hoped it would be.

Entangle change is actually huge for some builds. Entangle + runes of the krait for trappers/condition builds. Or with lyssa or any other interesting on elite effects. Remember that it will be that more powerful with the CD and the SoTF skill.
A proper control ranger might be possible.

Yea, entangle will be amazing.

Want to 3rd that. Huge buff for Entangle since 5s is about the maximum time people get caught in it anyway, just now we ckittene it every 48s (traited). Really awesome.

It’s genuninely impressive they still find tool tips to fix. I mean it would take what, a couple of hours for someone who knows the class to go through every skill and trait and put every possible fact you could ever want to know on it. Between all the devs they’d just need to set aside one day to fix every tooltip for every class and be done with it, forever.

But somehow we are here 2 years in and the tooltips are still wrong. I really don’t know how they do it.

But I don’t want use my pet as an extra utility button, i want it to tear things to shreds and I be the utility. I like to run build where my pet is the majority of my damage and i focus on cc so and keeping the pet alive so it can do the job that i want it to do.

And I want the exact opposite. I want to tear things appart while my pet sets me up for doing so. Neither of us can claim that we’re playing the ranger in the ultimate and only right way. So we have to find a balance. It has been suggested that the pet wont deal any damage until you invest points in beastmastery. If you do so the cast will change and you will be the utility while the pet is the main damage source.

Or even if pets never get no auto-attack even when traiting into BM, theres nothing stopping every one of its abilities being damaging abilities. Removing the AA and just turning our F1-4 into 4 fully controllable abilities doesnt mean the pet has to be utility only, a cat could still have all 4 of those abilities being hard hitting bursts of various kinds, like 4 phantasms rolled into one fluffy pet.

All it means is the pet isnt by default a portion of ranger damage. To continue with the Mesmer analogy, just like Mesmers are not forced to use shatters for their damage. You can choose to trait as a shatter Mesmer, but if you want to completely ignore the shatters you can do so with very limited penalty.

Going 5 into MS is not at all worth it. Remove 1 point from there and point it into Skirmishing for Sharpened Edges, or in Oak’s version put it into WS for offhand training.

Getting 1 guarenteed crit when you start a fight will make abosolutely no difference, but getting bleeds on crit or offhand training will add so much to the build.

Was also suggested that pet does nearly no damages and just be used for real support, with some pets having damage skills.

Something I have suggested multiple times and still think is the best solution.

Them fixing all the problems with pets and keeping their concept as it is now would also be fine, but it’s pretty clear at this point they are unwilling or even unable to put in that much effort and are just looking for quick fixes, so this will not happen.

I don’t know why I still get excited by these, but I do.

Deep down I still hope they will announce changes to the actual concerns we’ve been voicing for years, but then I remember that these things always end the same… With the same group on socially awkward Devs making jokes before brushing over rangers as quickly as possible because they don’t really understand the class and are incapable of actually discussing it in depth. That is, of course, assuming they actually have any Ranger changes to brush over in the first place.

This may just be my server, but on GH most guilds are actually more than happy to let people join their TS and join them on raids if you ask. This isnt always true, of course, mostly it is.

They just want to know you can and will listen to them and follow them properly, whereas if they tag up they will attract the super casual people who kinda follow the tag a bit then wander off and dont stick, etc etc.

So yeah.. Just ask to join their TS if you want to run with them for a bit, you might be surprised.

I don’t know all classes well enough to stay this is trye for them all, but for Rangers and Mesmers the F keys also remain useable when stunned. I think it’s just a general function that they are not effected by stuns.

As ever, fully agree. Nothing really new, it’s the same old problems we’ve always had which they are unwilling to acknowledge or fix.

Too much trait investment for our utilities is still my biggest frustration. Everytime I go on am mesmer and realise there are such endless possibilities for my utility choices without any traits required I die a little inside.

I think its worth highlighting in big bold letters that this build is 100% dependent on your teammates defending you.

You have no stunbreaker, condition removal or armour, one burst from anyone will put you on the floor.

I play S/D thief and Shatter mesmer, and I can see instantly that this build is the perfect target. No way to break basilisks venom? No mobility? No way to escape mesmer Sword2 and even no evades so you’ll take the full 7 clone shatter straight to the face? Honestly, this is the sort of build I dream of fighting against on my thief and mesmer.

So.. yeah. Might be good if you are left at the back to attack and support unbothered, but as soon as as someone goes for you (which as we all know, being Rangers, will happen) you are in a world of trouble.

Didnt know thieves could attack people in PvE…. well thieves were always OP so shouldnt come as a surprise really.

Rangers get confusion from pet. L2Pet

I’m aware of that, but I dont count it because it’s a terrible skill which wont hit even if the other person has never seen it before, but more importantly it’s a pet skill and thus doesnt scale off the rangers condition damage. It’s stuck because very low damage regardless.

It’s like when rangers go grab birds or cats and then jump around saying how awesome their bleed stacking is… Completely ignoring that half those stacks are ticking for 25-50% what a bleed should tick for on a condition build. To me, it’s like saying rangers have access to Ethereal Fields because the reef drake can create one underwater.. well yeah, sure, it can, but none counts that because it’s not worth counting.

Guardians did the short end of the stick on this… But TBH kind of like reason why they did it. Classes should get conditions which match their profession, and nothing really matches Guardians all that well, condition wise. They are the buffing class, not the debuffing class.

Still, they kind of ruined what could have been a nice system by giving Necros and Engis every condition under the sun. It destroys any logic that classes should get conditions which match them lore wise. Necros should never have had burning.. it makes no sense. Engineers should never have had poison either.

When you look at other classes it’s much more nicely balanced.. Warriors get no poison, Rangers get no confusion or torment, Mesmers do get pretty much everything but its quite unpredictable and RNG based and they have a clear emphesis on confusion. Thieves get no burning. All these classes are obviously lacking important conditions because they don’t fit with the class style. I think this is a good way to go with conditions… but sadly Guardians don’t really match any conditions other than burning. They probably should be given a decent bleeding trait though, since bleeding is not really a class thing its a bread-and-butter condition which everyone should have.

TL;DR: It’s sad for guardians, but I think it’s been done for the right reasons. I’d rather they removed conditions from classes which have too many (ie Engineer and Necro).

Celestial – I use this 99% of the time in a trap setup. More accurately this set is only aout 30% celestial, the rest is a mish mash of PVT, Knights, Rabid and Rampagers. I did this because it lets me put the focus on the stats I want. While overall I have fewer stats because of this, the loss is not a problem since it all comes out of Healing Power, which makes no real difference to a trap build which has no regen or healing other than TU, which doesnt scale much with HP.

Knights – I use this rarely, mostly for dueling. I bought it to try a might stacking BM-ish build I theory crafted, and while it works actually pretty darn well, it just doesnt match my playstyle all that well. But still, like I said, I use it for dueling sometimes and it can be great fun there.

Berserker – Almost never use, and when I do it’s just to go in a trolly LB build, but after 15 minutes of playing I remember how bad it is compared to a GS mesmer so I give up on it. I’d salvage it, but it’s bought with badges.

Apothecary – Until recently I had Dire (which I never used), but I salved that and bought Apothecary to trying the Shout build people run these days. I thought it might be fun since Faux RRR build was the first build that really got me into roaming and dueling, but after playing With the Shouts for 30 mins I remember why I moved away from those types of bunker / regen builds.

So yeah… pretty much I just use Celestial and sometimes Knights. If I get bored of that I swap classes and play Mesmer where I can happily troll around in full zerker.

Eh, the fact that warriors can be the best at anything if they want to be says to me that they are the problem. Now I know I know, they can’t be the best at everything in the same build, I get that, but the point is there is nothing a warrior cant do if they want to. There is no underlying limitation to the class.

Look at guardians or necros.. they can spec however they want but they will never ever ever ever even complete for the title of fastest class. It cannot be done. A mesmer will never have the healing/regen potential of some other classes. A thief will never have the raw facetank survivability of the heavy classes.

I could go on, but the point is every other class has something they simply cannot and will never be the best at, regardless of their build, and I think that’s how the game should be. So, to me, the fact that warrior can be the best at anything (even if it’s not all at once) makes them stand out as the problem, rather than the goal, because their class doesn’t have an underlying flaw.

Did you ever consider that not everyone wants to be on a server which has zerg warfare on every map 24/7?

I play on Gunnars Hold, which is pretty averge server overal, but WvW coverage wise it’s what I want. I like that I can log in during the day sometimes and find only 5-6 people defending our BL against roamers or small groups (10-15 at most). It’s fun to have the whole map to yourself for small scale tactical battles where we are constantly talking to eachother trying to work out where the enemies are and stop them.

Then, in the evening, we have primetime and get EB and usually 1-2 of the BLs on queues for a few hours, we can have our large battles and 80 man blobs if thats you’re thing.

I’m not saying it’s bad or wrong that you want a 24/7 maxed out server.. if thats how you like your WvW then great. But don’t go ahead and assume that that’s what everyone wants. If they compressed everyone up into the Golden League so we all had to play like that I’d quit this game so fast I wouldnt even slam the door on my way out.. .Thats not what I want from WvW.

The first thing is to absolutely 100% swap Sharpened Edges for Flame Trap. Geting 5 bleeds every 45 seconds is nothing compared for even 2-3 ticks of burning every 12s, and with projectile finishers you should be getting a lot more than 2-3 ticks even if they avoid the field.

In regards to Traveler Runes and Stunbreaker.. Yeah it’s a pain. For me, I went for it and took Traveler Runes and then took LR as a stunbreaker (sometimes swapping to SoR if I am up against a particuarly good condi player). The condition damage lost is noticable but not crippling, and in my opinion is well worth it.

I’ve been using the new food on my trap build and I’d say it’s good, worth it over Koi Cakes, but not absolutely revolutionary or nessesary. They heal for ~330 with a 1s ICD. Overall with a 50% crit chance you’ll be procing it every 6 or so hits (purely an average, obviously it can vary greatly) which turns out to mean you proc it every 4-6 seconds. So 330 healing every 5s (very roughly) is 66 HP/S.

So yeah, if you’re up for paying for them they are well worth using, but if not then don’t worry too much.

Wow.. just wow! most of all professions have stability or damage mitigation skills, and you had to created a thread only for warrior? wow!

Personally I dont think this is a huge deal since, as someone said, it becomes pretty obvious as soon as you hit a 0 on them, but still… There are clear animations for blocking, invulnerabilities, evades, even Mesmers Distort gives them an obvious little glowy animation, I dont see why endure pain should be any different.

Also, I am pretty sure the Ranger skill “Protect me” has the same problem. Signet of Stone does not since you can see the signet being activated.

If you want to increase the damage from water spells, you need to reduce their ability to heal and cleanse. You cant have an attunment which makes the ele virtually unkillable while they are using it and still expect to be pushing hard.

Atherakhia is correct, you’ve used the crit table incorrectly.

So at this point:

“Average pet DPS over time = 1.6 * base damage = 932.4” it should actually be 1.3, not 1.6.

And later with the traits and whatnot, the

“Average DPS factoring in critical damage and chance: 1.845 * 781.038 = 1441.015” should be 1.52, not 1.845.

Generally an interesting read though. I’ll admit to not paying much attention to numbers when it comes to build designing, because they only take you so far. I know you already know this but it’s worth saying anyway, the pets weakness is not its DPS, it’s that it’s too easy to mitigate the pet. The most extreme cases are Sword thieves and Staff mesmers.. where really your pet would be lucky to land more than a few hits in the entire fight, but even against more typical opponents it’s still too easy to avoid pets, hense my suggestion on your other thread to just remove Pet AAs altogether and make any damage they do do through special attacks be more “fast and hard” style like phantasms, because that works much better.

EDIT: I realise now I am bordering on derailing this thread back onto the topic the other thread is covering (ironic as it is, since this thread was created to stop that one being derailed), but you can’t really have one discussion without the other :p

Depends entirely on your definition of fun. Personally I find great fun in evading and kiting my opponent, and whilst yes most of my damage comes from AA that doesn’t bother me. I like the somewhat reactive playstyle rangers have.

The alternative is a class like mesmer or ele where you very much have set rotations you go through to do damage, which most argue is funner or more engaging, though to me I find this tiresome quickly because most of my skills I don’t put any thought into using. They are just part of the rotation and that’s that.

So yeah… It completely depends what you’re looking for. Atherakhia is right though, go play in PvP and see if you like the class before investing too much into it.

I’d definately say yes.

Especially in the case of the mesmer, without precision you depend VERY heavily on your opponent to kill themselves. If they just run about in a circle what are you going to do? Your confusion means nothing, your bleeds on clone death mean nothing, the only thing you can actually do to them if they just stand there and /laugh is AA with a staff, which wont kill them on it’s own.

So, while Dire makes you virtually unkillable, it almost means you cant kill anyone unless they make mistakes constantly throughout a fight. With Precision, you can stack constantly bleeds on someone even if they arent killing your clones and are managing to not spam their way to death with confusion.

There are a few cool ones, but I have always looked enviously at Engineers. They just straight up get an extra utility bar, and sure you can make the argument it’s because they have an odd situation of having kits and whatnot, I still think it’s such a straight forward and powerful class mechanic, how could you not want it.

Something I posted on the CDI was that I’d like to see pets have their auto-attack removed completely and rangers given their 30% damage back.

What would this mean? Well, if the pet has no auto attack it would essentially mean we’d have no need for the “attack”, “recall” and “toggle aggressive/passive mode” because pets wouldnt do anything on their own. Instead, all the F buttons could be replaced with special moves for your pet, so every pet would have 4 completely controlable abilities which can range from burst skills (causing the pet to do one big attack like a phantasm), CC skills, utilties, anything. ANet wouldnt need to re-invent the wheel for this.. these skills would simply be versions of the skills they already have.. so canies would all have a leaping knockdown on one button, a leaping cripple on another, birds would all have an AoE swiftness, moas would have an AoE heal, etc, thought of cause some changes would need to be made to some pets.

Essentially this turns pets into a cross between the Engineers Toolkit and Mesmer Phantasm. Rangers get back all their damage, which would make pet haters happy. Pet lovers would have MUCH more control over their pet to be able to use it to burst, CC, support, utilies, whatever they wanted, rather than now where really your pet is an AA bot with very little control.

A side effect of this is also that Shout utilities become more or less useless, which enables Anet to completely overhaul them (because by god do they need it) and bring them more in line with the usefulness of Guardian and Warrior shouts (which is not to say they need to be mass AoE boon skills, it just means they can have a group support/utility focus rather than a pet focus).

Maybe it’s just too many years playing trap builds and thus always having the Skimishing Traitline (and now always using Sigils of Battle), but I just really like the idea of getting buffs / effects on weapon swap. It really promotes more engaging fights rather than just chilling back at 1000+ range with the LB getting free vulnerability for nothing (and it really is for nothing, because if you have a LB you WILL have the MS traitline and thus will always have all 3 minor traits, so its not even like you’re choosing to take the traits).

To me, that just sounds bad. People should not be rewarded for doing nothing but standing at the back with a LB pressing 1, they should get more out if they are really engaging in combat actively, IMO.

Been suggested so many times, but ANet seem to have changed their stance on the whole thing. They no longer seem to care that some classes can escape more or less any situation at the drop of a hat.

Personally I am still in favour of every forward leap skill requiring a target, but I doubt it will happen. You’d be better off just asking for them to unnerf RTL.

You dont need to be so hostile to peoples suggestions. It’s enough to just say you disagree without attacking someone for making a perfectly valid suggestion.

Anyway… I think it’s a pretty decent suggestion. I dont think food adds a great deal to the WvW experience, it was clearly never balanced properly which is why there are inconsistancies between the boosts different foods give and why it was never put in PvP.

More or less what Ghost said, but really thief just isnt that sort of class. Mesmer is (or at least can be) an extremely lockdown heavy class with with easily 4-5 hard CCs in a build, and at least 2-3 without even trying. Thief just doesnt have that level of control as it’s not how the class is designed to be played.

Interesting how you look at it.

Mesmer is my 2nd “main”, with ranger being my first, and this is actually something I LIKED about the mesmer. When you’re building builds on a ranger is all pretty straightward, with limited flexibility. If you want to use X, you will take this traitline no questions asked. If you want Y you will take these traits.

Mesmer, however, is different. If you want to play a phantasm spec there are at least 2 almost completely different trait setups you can have. The same goes for shatter specs where you find shatter traits in multiple lines… I liked the way the mesmer traits were kinda mish mashed together because it meant you werent nessesarily locked into taking one specific line to make something work but rather could mix things up and create something different even within the same headline (eg Phantasm Mesmer).

I generally avoid accusing people of running “cheesy” builds, but P/D thieves are probably the ones which grind my gears the most (or really the only build that does).

It’s not the conditions. I don’t pay any mind to people who run condition builds, I dont see the fuss people make over it, so it’s not that. The problem I have is I don’t understand what possible build counters P/D on either of my 2 main classes (ranger and mesmer). Stealth is such a strong mechanic that really only works at all because mesmers have surprising little access to it (~every 12s even with with both CD reduction traits + one time uses such as elite), and because most thieves, even if they stealth spam, are ultimately going to have to come to you to do damage. This knowledge that a Dagger or Sword thief will come to you eventually gives people a fair chance to predict and counter a thief even if they are stealth 90% of the fight. The problem with a P/D thief is there is no counter.. they could be anywhere in a 900 radius around you, you cant evade the sneak attack because if you do they arent revealed, there’s simply nothing you can do to prevent the sneak attack. It’s annoying.

For other classes the counter I am sure if to evade CnD, which limits the thief to having very few stealth options (especially if using vemons), but as I said, since I main ranger and mesmer a good thief will never even try CnD off me as soon as they see I can dodge it and they will go straight for the pet and clones, which I cant prevent.

So ultimately, regardless of my build, I am left in a situation where I cant stop them stealthing every 3-4s, I cant stop the sneak attack from loading me with 6-7 bleeds + potential venoms, and I cant predict where they will attack me from like a melee-thief meaning I cant effectively fight back before they CnD off my minions again. All thats really left is stacking insane levels of condition removal to prolong the fight, but thats not actually a counter measure, just a stall method.

I have a thief and play it a little, but I couldnt really say it P/D is really a super easy-mode build or not. I just think at the moment it has too few counters because the thief can spam stealth like any thief but attack from range like a mesmer. They have the strongest aspects of both stealth classes but none of the weaknesses, and it is a problem.

All that said though.. I dont blame you the player for using it. I blame ANet for poor balancing.. so don’t let other peoples opinion of your build choice get you down.

I actually really like the skill, I just don’t use it because of how often is fails. It really is the #1 annoyance with my mesmer.. that skills like iLeap and AT can simply do nothing for no apparently reason. I can be standing right infront of a warrior facing him and still it does nothing.

They need to update it to work the ranger skill “Sic ’em”. That skill applies the Reveal debuff, but the nice thing is it works 100% of the time. You dont need line of sight, you dont need to be facing them, you dont need anything. If they are in range, it works. If AT worked so reliably I would use it without question, because it’s so good on paper.

I’m primarily a roamer.. but like most people I’ll join in the zerg now and again. Usually my motivation behind doing so is one of 2 things: either I will not really be in the mood for playing 100% seriously, which is required if you’re going to solo roam, so zerging around is a nice way to blow off steam with minimal effort, or I will genuinely be wanted to defend my servers area (usually the home BL). It’s never nice to see T3 keeps falling in your BL, so yeah, if there is a serious danger I’ll join the commander and help defend if needed.

This is a terrible idea. Stopping WvW just so people can walk around and get achievements?

A better suggestion is just to remove the achievements. I mean what is the point in having them if it’s as simple as AFK autowalking around each map for 5 minutes? There’s no point.

So 100% no support. fIf they want to do something drastic, they should remove the achievements, not ruin WvWers fun just just for the tiny number of people who struggle to get some achievements.

Improving at any game really comes down to looking at why you lost. Try to avoid making excuses like “hes using a cheese build” or “I got zerged over” etc. While it might be entirely true, maybe they were a PU mesmer or indeed you did just get run over by 20 people, there is still blame on you. Why didn’t you see those 20 people coming? 20 is a big group, pretty easy to see even a long distance off, so actually it is largely your fault for being unobservant. Maybe they came round a corner, but then why were you standing by a corner which lead to a direction you knew enermies could come from?

You see this a LOT in DotA… where people will be off farming, get ganked by the opposing team and them start flaming the support player for not having sentry wards up to alert them of the enermy teams movements. Sure, some blame might be on the support player for not having the wards, but most of the blame is still on the person who died because they could clearly see there were no sentry wards, and thus they had no clue where the opposing team was, and still they went out on their own into a dangerous location when actually they should have waited and requested either someone to back them up or to put down wards, rather than going balls to the wall then blaming others for their misjudgement.

So back to the point… just look at what went wrong every time you lose and look at what YOU could chance about it next time. Don’t blame it on things you cant change like the other players build.

I have to disagree. While on my mesmer I do like going full zerker (or at the moment Rampagers), on my ranger I run or nearly full celestial build and it’s very much a “middle ground” build (as you’d expect from a celestial set).

I’ve played more or less all the main ranger builds and many others beyond that and this is, for me, by far the best and funnest, so I dont for a minute believe it’s zerker or bunker or nothing.

I am talking from a WvW perspective.. so perhaps PvP isnt the same, but yeah… I disagree.

Is there any other profession that loses anything just by having a special mechanic?

We had been robbed of estimated 30% of our dmg just because we have pets.
Do necromancers have less hp, because of deathshroud?

In fairness, Necros are somewhat hampered by their mechanic as well. They have clearly been deliberately given no defensive mechanics besides DS (no eveades, mobility, insane healing, blocks, immunities, anything really). Eles also do lose weapon swapping from having attunments, and whilst they do overall get more abilities from the tradeoff there are some forced drawbacks (fewer sigils, less build diversity by not being able to mix and match weapon combos / have a range + melee set at once).

Still, it remains true that rangers suffer the most drawbacks from their mechanics and are the most unable to escape it.

With regards to the OP, I think giving pets their own runes or sigils is going a bit far.. though they should share in the runes / sigils that the ranger is using in some way. Afterall, it’s clearly not fair that stacking sigils, or +% runes/sigil effects are only effecting 70% of the whole player (30% being the pet, which is not effected).

I always thought it would be nice if there was no respawn timer, but rather pets didn’t reset every time they were swapped. So when a pet is swapped out, it slowly recharged it’s health (taking say 40s to go from zero to full). Pets could be swapped without any dealth penalty, they simply would still be partially damaged when bought out if they hadnt been given sufficient time to regenerate.

This would allow people to effectively put pets out of the fight is they were keeping pressure on the active pet and were damaging it faster than the inactive pet was healing (because after a while both pets would be virtually dead, and whenever the ranger swapped the pet that came out would more or less insta die because it hadnt healed yet), but would also allow the ranger more freedom and use of their pets on demand if they really needed it just for one burst or one F2, and without just a huge penalty for it’s death.
