CDI’s are much different than a poll. A poll like the one that was created for skyhammer is too much of an extreme imo. That’s like putting up a poll for the deletion of sPvP or WvW right now and having people vote on it on these forums and I can almost guarantee you most people will vote for deletion because they are unhappy with it AND that most of the people who come and post on these forums are people who have issues with the game and not the ones who like it. Now should they delete sPvP or WvW since the poll said so? Probably not, it wouldn’t be a good decision for the game.

Now from what I understand from CDI’s, yes the devs pick the topics (excluding the ranger one), but the CDI’s are there to spark up discussion and ideas on a selective topic which most topics are very broad. These topics help the devs see what the forum community thinks should he improved and also what they may be missing. It gives the devs ideas that maybe they didn’t have, or something that they came up with and want a different view from but most importantly puts all these ideas on a particular subject into one thread with summaries.

Now I’m not saying that a poll is trash compared to a CDI, not even close. But a poll is much more rash than a CDI and I’m sure Anet reads everything on these forums. Ideas from CDI’s have made it into the game and I’m sure they will continue to but not all of them make it, not even close, in fact its takes a long time for any of these ideas to be put in and I’m sure your threads on skyhanmer have an influence on their opinion on skyhammer. Anet definitely cherry picks ideas from these discussions because it is such a small percentage and it is their game. If we made all the decisions it wouldn’t be Anet’s game. And I’m just saying, but you all are the ones who expected Anet to delete content out of the game because of a 300 straw poll vote. That’s a much bigger decision.

Just my 2cents……cant seem to ever shorten my posts, oh well

Edit: I want to say that I don’t believe the devs are never wrong, there are a lot of things I disagree with such as how they do balance in the game regarding frequency of patches and so on, my point is the focal of this thread which is that the community’s opinion doesn’t do anything and the CDI’s are there to make us feel better

Features Patch 15.4.14

this is not a “features patch”

What’s mentioned isn’t the feature patch, it’s the changes made to the Chinese client specifically for the Chinese release.

Also, references to the PvE locker, aka the Wardrobe, have already been added to the game files.

That’s what I think as well. They’ve been so quiet about the changes coming that I don’t think they would release all the changes in an interview about China. They mentioned nothing of what’s in the feature patch directly. This is good news because all the recent threads about WvW and how the patch couldn’t come during the season, etc. got me worried.

I just wanted to say that the scene with Braham and everyone was fine but there was one thing that kept annoying me. That was the length of time before someone else spoke up. I almost left like 3 times prior to it finishing because it seemed they weren’t going to talk again and then all of a sudden someone starts talking. It just didn’t seem to run very smoothly, and felt awkward. Anyways, that’s my 2cents.

Do know how long World Completion takes? I’ve been playing this game for like 6 months and still haven’t been able to get it because of how utterly boring and LONG it is. I’m finally close to 70% and let me tell you, rank 14 in WvW is probably equivalent to just completing one map in PvE. Not to mention all the other PvE requirements which is everything else.

It’s such a minimal change I really don’t understand why you’re complain. Just think about it for once, is it really that bad? Seriously, nothing against WvW but it’s like being in the Queensdale or Frostgorge champ train when you’re in a zerg. Just think of it that way.

They told everyone what was going to be in this “maintenance” patch, why would you assume they would put this in it??? Just because the season has started does not mean that account bound wxp cannot be added in. The feature patch is coming beginning-mid april so I would assume it might be in there although I wouldn’t get your hopes all the way up just in case since they haven’t told us anything about the feature patch yet. BUT they are going to start telling us whats in it and talking about it on the next ready up it seems so stay tuned.

I think people underestimate how bold people get when they are typing comparative to talking with their voice. I think people yelling/flaming wouldn’t be that common on voice chat compared to typing. Xbox live you say? Voice chat on Xbox live primarily goes down to fps’s that are random with a community of millions. Two completely different communities and game types and yes it does make a big difference. I used voice chat in Never winter PvP and honestly I never heard anyone flaming someone else. Its a lot different. And like I said previously, there’s always a mute button.

I’m from Anvil Rock and I want to warn you that when it comes to PvE you will not be satisfied there. That is the main reason I transferred to TC. I had joined Anvil Rock when I first got the game because I am a PvPer at heart but I also enjoy PvE and the world was dead to me especially large events like Marionette. The server tried for 2 days and then called it quits and that was only the WvW community trying as I’m sure the PvE’ers had long since decided that guesting was the best solution.

[PvX] Balance, Iteration, Wrongdoing

Cush.4063

Thank you for your response. I would just like to reiterate my main point which is that balance changes need to happen more frequently. The Extra Credits video on Failing Faster expands on my point perfectly, I feel. Changes do not have to be sweeping, nor meta-shifting overnight. Steady bug fixing of skills, tooltips accompanied with tweaks fortnightly – good or bad – will achieve a balanced result faster than the current Arenanet balance stance.

There is one post, however, that does concern me

Snip for length

Snip for length

One of the secondary points I had made throughout this thread was Arenanet’s stoic stance on refusing to revert certain changes despite causing a demonstrable balance issue like Warrior’s Healing Signet. My earlier examples included nerfs to Necromancer condition application outside of Dhuumfire that have no indication of being reverted once the feature patch comes to pass, or the possibility of Fresh Air/Diamond Skin burst Ele becoming yet another obnoxious build once Signet of Restoration is unsplit.

Given that the followup patches to Dhuumfire – August, September, October, November, December 2013 did not change the meta created in June-July 2013, this is one of the other stances that Arenanet needs to acknowledge and change if 50/50 matchups determinant by skill are ever to become a reality.

To reiterate my healthcare example once again:
When a medication is causing problems, the doctor does not then prescribe multiple other medications to deal with the side effects. Instead the problem medication is withdrawn.

This emergent pattern with Arenanet’s balance changes is worrisome, and the upcoming Feature patch has the potential to be a repeat of June 2013 if Arenanet does not heed the lessons of its own history.

First off, you’re OP post was absolutely a wonderful read and a breath of fresh air from all the rage posts. I’ve tried telling people to hold back the rage and post more constructive posts in the past but it gets to the best of us when we get angry, especially update after update after update. I’ve also wanted to make a post like yours and have tried to do it in replies but I really do not excel in writing and grammar and organization so I could not even close come to pulling off something like you just did.

Anyways, on to what I quoted I completely agree. I am not saying I am completely correct in what I have been saying for awhile now but I have expressed what you said in that quote on the thief class. Imo, the thief class just needs a complete rework because atm the class consists of using one attack to do damage on each of it’s meta builds and the reason for this is the initiative system, and the fact that it is so extremely dependent on stealth for offense and defense imo breaks it. I have gone much deeper into this subject and there are plenty of other examples besides that class such as HS like you mentioned, BUT I’m not trying to derail the thread so I really appreciate the work you put into researching this and coming up with a very constructive and concise post. Thank you and I hope when Allie passes this onto the devs that they really look into what they might need to change or what their bosses need to change regarding how balance updates work in this game not only in frequency but in actually changing concepts of skills that they have already created. I love this game and I hope Anet will take this constructive feedback and run with it.

Immortal and thief in the same sentence? Same thread? Mer Gerd, what have we here?

If thief is so op, try it out for a week. Share your thoughts, and tell us how you did. Don’t look up some hero build online, make it up to w/e you think would be “op”. You’ll quickly learn their brute dmg is a result of 0 defensive stats, and their reliance on stealth is of upmost importance to stay alive. Otherwise, they just kinda flop over and die. It’s no different from a zerker ele or Mesmer hopping into in with a storm of particle effects and leaving a bunch of dead people in their wake.

I main a thief and I have to say stealth is broken. Thieves are not at fault for this but the fact that they have to rely on stealth in order to do damage and defense is pretty bad. It means a thief will always start out by going into stealth at any part in the fight. Its all they have. Thieves should not be so stealth dependent. Then you have the non stealth class S/P which is mindnumbingly boring and OP. All thieves have to do is press 2 buttons in any weapon set to do ridiculous damage and either not be seen or be evading. Besides the part where you have to judge when to attack and when to bait or when to wait, all we do is stealth back stab stealth back stab stealth back stab, or teleport pistol whip teleport pistol whip teleport pistol whip. Thieves need a complete class rework on traits, weapon skills, and a better class mechanic(although steal is fine). Initiative needs to he removed. Then make thieves not have to depend on stealth and not have to depend on 1 attack to do damage (the initiative system is at fault for this). Then make thieves still a powerful class, more diversity so its not the same kitten repetitiveness, and still be the most mobile class. The class would be so much more fun to play if you didn’t have to just press the same two buttons all the time. Not to mention you wouldn’t have 10000000 thief op threads a day. I finally rolled an Ele after playing thief for so long because it is so boring but I love burst so I went with the only other class that has something near thief. If thief was changed like I said, I would go back to playing it but I fear it’s too late to make such a big change to the class even though it would be for the better.

The thing is there are always other games coming out and someone, somewhere is always convinced that each one is going to the major competition that could steal everyone away from this game unless they release some new flashy gimmick to distract them. I suspect it’s the same with every other MMO as well.

When GW2 came out it was Mists of Pandaria and Neverwinter Online they had to beat, then it was Rift and something else going free-to-play, then there were a few others, now it’s Wildstar and ESO, in the summer it will be something else.

And as far as I can tell this predicted exodus never actually happens, for any game. There are still games like Ultima Online and Runescape going from before WoW came out. If that game didn’t have enough of an impact to seriously affect the existing games then nothing will.

Yes games do sometimes have to change their business model or design to keep players, and sometimes they shut down. But when it actually happens no one ever says it was because another game came out and drew all their players away. It’s always blamed on something that game did (or didn’t do).

This. I completely agree. The games that do die and shut down are nothing like GW2. They are not AAA titles or games that you never have to pay a sub or p2w to play. GW2 will always have a great population and fan base until a sequel comes out or enough time passes. The thing is GW2 set a new style for an MMO so its not a repeat of the past so this new generation of MMO’s have a lot of the GW2 aspects in them so GW2 doesn’t have to worry about losing players because the new games are also taking this new combat system and other systems as well. Games like SWTOR are the past generation of MMO’s with a stat combat system and might fail because they aren’t part of the new. Anyways, just my 2cents. Not saying GW2 won’t lose population because that’s how any game works over time but I don’t think there’s anyway that it will get shut down or die until like I said, a new generation of MMO’s come out or a sequel comes out.

An Ele burst comes along with blowing all their CD’s at once while other classes burst comes with blowing one CD. Their burst should not be nerfed, the comparison is nowhere near equal when all your CD’s are blown while other classes still have something to use. And when we talk about burst its all about s/f Ele as well. Ele needs higher sustain and HP and burst should remain the same unless you want to make it so we only have to use one CD for that burst you can reduce it.

A necessity for competitive PvP should not be a third party program that is impossible to get people into with pugs and a waste of time to setup and get people in it prior to a match in tPvP, it should just be in the game as it improves every single aspect of the game. I mean people have been complaining about new people being in the game and them doing the wrong things all the time and that would be greatly improved with the addition of voice chat.

There’s a big feature patch coming at the beginning of April that everyone’s getting hyped up for and the living story season 1 just ended. The sPvP scene is getting a huge overhaul with a ladder system with seasons, new game modes, a big balance patch, runes and sigils are getting a complete rework, they are phasing out glory for gold, and more. People are expecting a new continent unlocked, new commander and guild features, and just a bunch of new stuff. I wouldn’t put all your hopes and dreams into the patch but supposably a lot of changes are in it as well as awesome new features. Sounds like a great time to jump back into the game.

None of that will happen, next patch is epilouge and the one after is wvw season 2 (this will kill the lower pop servers)

Umm? Yes it is going to happen and I wasn’t talking about the next patch or the WvW season. But yes there is another WvW season coming which should be fun. I’m talking about the feature patch that is changing sPvP (yes the things I said were true) and the other ones aren’t set in stone but some if not all of them will happen in this patch. That’s including the balance changes. I was not talking about the maintenance patch on the 18th of this month. I’m talking about the feature patch which if you watched the twitch stream for gw2 you’d see that it is releasing at the beginning-mid April.

You guys talk about voice communication as if you wouldn’t be able to turn it off yourself. I don’t see why there wouldn’t be an option for that. The fact is, for games to run smoother, beginning players to learn faster and understand more, and for people actually trying to be competitive and win, voice comm is the best there is to offer. I’ve seen suggestions about pressing buttons while clicking on the minimap when you need help in a certain area for sos or other examples and the truth is, if you need help in an area you don’t have the time to take your attention off of your opponent and click and hold a couple buttons and move your cursor and press it on a minimap. The best way would be to say, “I’m about to lose mid, there are all 5 of them here so far is open” with your own voice because that is one thing you can do while engaging another player.

I agree, with less particle effects on the actual boss/enemy it would be much clearer. I also agree on the orange circles because it makes the game too easy. If the particle effects were toned down on the target and the aoe circles disapeared as long as their was an animation to the attack it would make it much more enjoyable as well as more difficult yet still be able to accomplish because of the animations.

Cush.4063

I just don’t think typing or clicking is a good enough option for communication because of how fast the gameplay is in this game. There just isn’t enough time…..unless you’re playing a PU mesmer. Voice communication for groups is a must if you want to maximize communication and for players no matter who they are to work together. It will also EXTREMELY help out players who are just beginning in sPvP because other players can give them a role and tell them how it works and communicate what to do while playing in the match. You just can’t do this in text at the beginning of the match and most new players aren’t going to tell everyone they are new so listening to what other people have to say and being guided by them with a voice comm would be incredible. It would help players improve drasticly. In my opinion, voice communication is a necessity.
Edit: I saw someone post that MMOs don’t traditionally use voice comms and that is not important. Gw2 can strive to be different like it already has and improve the competitive quality

"Competitive Casual" Gameplay Options

in PvP

Posted by: Cush.4063

Cush.4063

I think what is seriously needed is a voice comm system. It’s something this game is seriously lacking that could improve the sPvP scene drastically. Solo queue wouldn’t be as much about fending for yourselves by making builds that are centered around you since you would be able to speak to your teammates and let them know what’s going on at mid or when to push far, etc. Right now you can’t do that unless you are already traveling to a different point on the map while not in combat and you have to type it out. People also take what other people say in chat way more personal than what it really is because you can’t hear how they really say it. When you type “Come support mid” they may be thinking you are saying they are being worthless where they are or w/e and they might be more stubborn about it when really you are trying to get out quick that you really need the help. Whenever you type in chat it’s usually almost always too late to get it done such as rushing lord because everybody is questioning whether or not everybody else is going to do it and so a lot of the time you see 1-2 people rushing lord while everyone else sat where they were and then finally realize it and it’s too late.

Communication in sPvP is EVERYTHING. It really is. It’s the only way to play competitively and if there was a voice comm system in the game for groups/teams you are in than I think it would drastically improve the sPvP scene. And not only would it improve the sPvP scene but also the WvW and PvE scene as well, I just think it would be more focused on improving sPvP and roaming since it’s smaller and what groups are allowed in unless Anet made a system for servers to use for WvW zerging.

Just my 2cents but this could be one of the biggest game changers in my opinion.

tl;dr: Adding a voice comm system would improve sPvP and other aspects of the game more so than anything else because to be competitive and act as a team communication is a necessity and the most important aspect of the game and map chat is too unreliable

Why? All that’s going to happen is Anet Nerfing stealth more for thief because of how stealth is pretty broken when a class relies on it that much to do any damage.

That is why the thief class should be reworked. So it doesn’t rely on stealth.

So that everyone can just play S/P?

You obviously don’t understand what I wrote. I said they should redesign the class meaning the initiative system, its reliance on stealth to do anything, and all of its weapon skills and traits. The thief class could be so much better than mind numbing stealth back stab stealth back stab stealth back stab, or teleport pistol whip teleport pistol whip teleport pistol whip. Its the least diverse class in this game and relies on one attack to do damage on any of its reliable weapon sets. It could be such a fun class to play, and you wouldn’t see threads everyday on thief spamming and stealth broken, etc.

There are just scraps of metal that you have to look for all over the place that aren’t that common and don’t help your quest bar that much. The only Ogres that I’ve found are more up north on “The Ogre Road” and they are out of the quest area and are in a different quest area that help you complete that quest. Is the feature build strictly a pvp build by the way?

No, it is a bunch of everything.

Will the feature patch be good?

We know next to nothing about the upcoming features, so who knows…

But I don’t think that we’re not just dealing with a “feature patch”. I believe we’re in a situation where the next couple patches will be feature-oriented as the devs have never said that everything will be coming in one patch, nor is it possible.

If I were to speculate on anything, it would be that the march 18th patch is going to be somewhat small and that anything of real consequence will come in the patch after that.

The devs did say that everything would be in one big feature patch. Quoting Colin directly:

“We’ll go into more detail soon, just to re-iterate so it’s clear:
“The next round of major features will be bundled together into a large “feature only” release that will come after the first season of the Living World 2014 has finished.”
A feature release is not an expansion, it’s a release focused on game features. Examples of game features we’ve done in the past would be: guild missions, account achievement system, spectator mode, new pvp maps, daily world boss chests, removing culling and giving visibility options, the WvW WxP system, etc”

So yes, it will all be in the feature patch.

Thank you for the Memories

Ya, they are revamping sPvP with new ladders, PvE/PvP cross integration, new game modes, new maps, new everything which may or may not come with this feature patch next month. But, I will accept anything you want to give away to Cush.4063. Thanks!

Meta Event Achievement Completion

I’m just putting it out there, I’m not sure if anyone really cares but I think it would be really cool if on your character selection screen where it shows that you have completed the main meta achievement that it showed not just the current one, but every one that you have participated in and completed right below eachother like a list. It’s just one of those things when you logon that reminds you of each LS event you’ve done with the unique symbol/color, the amount of time you’ve been playing, and a cool little sense of pride. Just a suggestion, nothing big. If you agree then feel free to add onto the thread

If I were to purchase these skins they are a one time use correct? Not like achievement skins. Also, I see that it says it can be converted for sPvP. If I were to convert them would I only be able to use them in PvP? Or can I use them in both PvP and PvE once?

Thanks

What's an "OP" spec? AmazingPaintSkillzInside

Not trying to be an kitten here or anything, but IMO you’ve got it a bit wrong. You’re looking at how easy it is to become good at a spec, but really you should be looking at how good a spec is relative to other specs.

I see where you’re heading: the game should encourage layered, deep specs, not faceroll ones, but what makes a build ‘overpowered’ is when a spec achieves too much for the sacrifices it makes (in other words, it has minimal counterplays relative to its performance). Tbh, I think this is probably what you’re getting at with your last graph and possibly through the vague use of the word “efficiency”, but I dont think time is really relevant – being overpowered really just means being able to achieve too much relative to other classes. Builds that are a diagonal line, but have a peak “efficiency” much higher than any other build, would also be OP undoubtedly.

This is also why games should balance around top players by comparing the peak efficiency (if you like) of different builds, and seek to educate the worse players to bring them up to that peak. A good example of this is the thief class. At low rankings, thieves are abysmal and a detriment to the team. At the top of the leaderboards thieves are to some extent defining the meta and pushing other classes out. You wouldn’t want to balance the class for mid or lower tier players cause you’d buff them ridiculously for the top players, hence whether it’s OP or not should really be independent of time, and only focussed on the maximum “efficiency” possible.

A healthy game will actually have classes / builds that are easy to pickup to do fairly well for beginners, but also have complex, deep specs that will dominate these builds when played very well. So both types of build you’ve outlined are important. Although not perfect, GW1 was much closer to balance than GW2 because although certain builds (IWAY, Trap rangers, Bloodspike, Thumpers etc) were easy and rolled inexperienced teams, balanced builds would always win if they were coordinated enough.

I 100% agree. I wish this were the case. You basically read my mind but I also think the OP was making the graph on a more general basis and it makes a lot of sense. What you are saying goes deeper into what the OP is trying to say imo. I wish it were just as easy to implement as it is to explain.

I certain my have gotten my hopes up and many others have as well as you can see on the feature patch wish list thread. Although I wouldn’t blame Anet on my dissapointment, I would blame myself and the forum community for getting me so hyped :p

No thank you, dodging works perfectly fine in this game. Why fix something that isn’t broken?
