My opinion about Diving googles

in Living World

Dakota.4591

This diving goggles location isn’t difficult, it’s annoying and tedious.
It’s GW2’s premiere example of ‘Fake Difficulty’.

It’s not hard because precise jumping is involved, it’s hard because due to the specific geometry of the branch or log you’re standing on, the jump launches you at an angle instead of straight up as it should be.

It’s not hard because precise jumping is involved, it’s hard because the last branch before the platform has a curve to it with an invisible arbitrarily designed point at which you’ll either stand in place or slide off.

It’s not hard because precise jumping is involved, it’s hard because the skeleton of that branch extends beyond the skin, so when you’re angling yourself onto it, you’d land on top going by the graphic but instead you hit the invisible side and fall down.

It’s not hard because precise jumping is involved, it’s hard the arbitrarily short timer gives you next to no room for error. You don’t make it perfectly the first time, you have to drop down onto the scaffolding to try again and hope to god you don’t fall because the scaffolding kittens up the game’s camera.

Players want challenging content because it’s legitimately difficult. Not content that’s challenging because of issues with the game’s engine.

One quick thing I might mention about that build.
I’ve noticed that Hidden Thief seems to be incompatible with a lot of stealing-related skills (Serpent’s Touch, Mug, Slight of Hand, Bewildering Ambush), in that it’ll stealth you first, then do the other skill’s effect and immediately put you into revealed.
It might only be some of the skills I mentioned, not all of them. But if you’re noticing that steal doesn’t give you stealth as much as skip right to giving you Revealed, might look into a different trait.

Thieves really have no place in a wvw zerg. They’re awesome for roaming solo or in small groups, but they’re next to useless in a zerg.

Find a good venomshare build and camp shortbow, that’s probably the most you’ll be able to do.

If you want some survivability, can try swapping out a few pieces of armor for soldiers.
But trinkets? If you’re running a power build, zerk trinkets are just too valueable to replace with soldier. This might have shifted with the crit damage → ferocity change, but I really don’t think so.

Throw the soldiers on if you want, but you’ll probably get more use out of them selling them for 5 silver.

why is exotic celestial time gated?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dakota.4591

Dakota.4591

Probably because Celestial stuff was a whole lot more valueable way back in the beginning, both because it had Magic Find and because it’s crit damage was disproportionately high. So, as mentioned, they didn’t want people grinding it out too quickly because of how much ‘better’ it was than lots of other gear sets.

Now that magic find is gone from items, and that its crit damage has been nerfed, no reason not to remove the time gate.

OP obviously have never gone to triple wurms. Skilled condition necromancers are VERY high in demand.

A few mobs in an event that came out a year and a half after the game was release, that had this mechanic -specifically- added for the one and only reason of giving condi classes something to do, hardly counts towards the big picture of the problem with conditions in PvE. If anything it’s that much more poignant a symptom of the overall problem

[Suggestion] New Elite Raids

Dakota.4591

Pretty much everyone else called it. Nothign wrong with making large-scale events like Teq or Jungle Wurm. The events themselves aren’t that tough, the hard part is bouncing from one ip to another, mass-taxiing, and otherwise trying to get enough people into a single megaserver to actually do the event. As many as a few random people doing heart quests is enough to pretty much break Jungle Wurm since it prevents enough people from actually doing the event to make it winnable.

If they want to make large scale world events that takes a minimum of 50 or so people to beat, but doesn’t require the hard cap to make it winnable, that’s just fine.
If they want to make 150-person events but add some sort of instancing system so that whoever’s organizing it can actually get in enough people to participate, that’s just fine.
If they want to add in-game voice chat, that’d be a cherry on top.

But under the current system of bouncing overflows till someone finds one that -might- have enough room to get an adequate force in? Yeah, we’ll pass on that.

Rune of Strength for Dungeons?

in Thief

Posted by: Dakota.4591

Dakota.4591

Strength runes are certainly very good. However, I don’t think they’re necessarily the best for thieves. Thieves certainly have ways of generating might, but not as much as other classes that would get more bang for their buck from strength runes. There’s nothing wrong with getting them, but there’s other viable alternatives if you don’t want to drop 80 gold on a set of runes that is likely going to be nerfed.

Scholar runes were mentioned, and there’s plenty of other sets that still perform pretty well. Ranger, Eagle, Pack, Rage, Citadel, and Hoelbrak all come to mind.

Strength runes are the choice if you want the bleedingest of the bleeding edge, but you won’t likely notice a difference between those or the other listed ones. And when the inevitable nerf comes, you won’t be kicking yourself for dropping 80 gold on a rune set that’s on par with the rest.

Re-reading the OP, I’d say Hoelbrak would probably be your best bet. They’re pretty much the same as Strength, except you swap the damage mod for better condition survival, which would serve you better in WvW.

It’s really not that different from the gold sink it was before this patch post-megaserver, where every waypoint except the entries would show up as contested, and you’d have to WP into the map at one of those, then use a second waypoint to get to where you wanted to go because it wasn’t contested after all.

One way or the other, it’s just a side effect of kitten-poor programming and foresight involving the megaservers.

FotM Daily chest question

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Dakota.4591

The “chest tiers” and the “loot tiers” don’t exactly match up. The list from the wiki is the list from the quality of loot in the chest, not the tiers at which you’ll get the chest. That is 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50. So if you do a 40 and a 49, the 40 is in one lower “quality tier” and the 49 is in the higher one, but they both count as your daily chest for the “40s”.

Confusing as hell, and why they have it set up this way, I have no idea. But it is what it is. It’s been this way since the Fractured patch.

T1 leather to T2 leather = 15s Loss per SP.

Copper to Iron = 50s Loss per SP

Jute to Wool = 90s Loss per SP

Green to soft Wood = 40s Loss per SP

The losses are halved if you use refined mats instead, but still a loss. You can do copper to silver ingots but that is a 1.9g loss per SP…

Rare kitten T2 mats are also currently at -40 to -90 silver per SP as well.

As of right now, promoting bloods from T1 -> T2 returns about 44s per skill point assuming an average return of 16 per combine, 51s per skill point assuming your return is 20. If you hit the max roll of 40 for all ten combines for one skill point, you’re barely topping 1g. And that is the highest-return T1 mat on the market right now.

The only way you could feasibly be making 3-6g per skill point on mats is if you’re farming the mats yourself. Which theoretically is an option. Not so much if you plan on personally farming 500,000 T1 mats to burn through the 1k skill scrolls the OP has sitting around.

Edited since writing “to” after “T1” triggers the profanity filter for some reason.

Case in point. Someone mentioned The Anomaly. At current market rates, if you buy the ectos yourself to make it, your profit will be about 8 silver per skill point (Takes 250 to make that one). Granted, significantly more profit if you have the ectos sitting around waiting to go instead of buying them on the TP.

Immobulus gives a much better return of 4g per skill point at current market prices, but it takes over 500g to make that one.

Buy 500 of a T1 mat, 50 T2 dusts, and 1 of the T2 mats. Spend one skill point to get 10 philosopher’s stone. Convert those T1 mats into T2 mats in the mystic toilet. Depending on the mats, you can make a tidy profit. Same thing with other tiers of materials, just takes more skill points.

Now, I throw the BS flag on claims of 3-6 gold per SP, but depending on the mat you can usually make roughly 50 silver per skill point, and with luck on the randoms you can make more. Not much, but 200 skill scrolls in the bank can make you a tidy 100g with a bit of time investment.

The other option is to buy eldritch scrolls at 50 skill points a pop to make weapons. Those are a little bit more iffy. You can sometimes make 2-3 gold profit-per-skill point on those, but you usually need an investment of several hundred gold to make the weapon before you can sell it. And since weapons don’t sell as readily as the crafting materials, it can be weeks before you see that return. And if you have to keep taking it off the market and re-listing at a lower price, enough times doing that can eat away your profit from the listing fees.

Eldritch weapons have a bigger return, but crafting materials are far more consistant. Your choice.

The Sylvari as Mordremoth Minions?

in Living World

Posted by: Dakota.4591

Dakota.4591

It’s been stated several times in-game that dragon corruptions cannot co-exist. Being branded makes a creature immune from becoming risen, and being a destroyer makes something immune from becoming iceblood.

And yes, CoE does have something that’s made up of multiple dragon corruptions, both Kudu’s giant and Subject Alpha. But remember this. Scientists in real life have been able to grow human ears off of the backs of mice. Just because a bunch of mad scientists working in a lab can make somethign doesn’t mean it can happen in nature. Just because Subject Alpha is a creature of multiple dragon corruptions doesn’t change the fact that in normal circumstances the corruptions are mutually exclusive.

So yes, the fact that Sylvari cannot become risen/branded/iceblood/etc could very well possibly mean that they are just humans who’ve been ‘blighted’, and that Ventari’s Tablet and the Pale Tree somehow are freeing them from Mordremoth’s influence, the same way that Glint was freed of Kralkatorrik’s.

2. An entire new area of 5-6 zones, progressing from the 15-25 zone all the way up to the 80 zone, complete with dynamic events, heart quests, vistas, jump puzzles, open-world bosses, etc.
3. A new dungeon (or dungeons) that sticks around, instead of disappearing after a month only to come back half-finished as a fractal a year and a half later.
4. New and interesting weapons and armor skins that don’t require once-in-a-lifetime luck or buying gems to acquire.
5. Precursor crafting.
6. No more hobosacks.
7. Revamped condition damage to make it useful in PvE without unbalancing it in PvP/WvW
8. Bring back the Ferocity/Charisma/Dignity system and make it have an actual impact.
9. An Elder Dragon final boss encounter that has all the epicness such a fight should have, instead of 222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222.

Strength isn’t as good for thieves as it is for some other classes that generate might more easily than us. But they’re still pretty amazing.
Hoelbrak were mentioned. The poor man’s Strength, and like strength there are probably better alternatives for thief.
Pack runes were mentioned, as were Scholar.
After those, there are a bunch of alternatives you can try out if you don’t want to be quite so cookie cutter. Eagle, Citadel, Ogre, Rage, probably others. None are as bleeding-edge as Strength or Scholar, but they won’t break your bank and are still effective.

Stop being so narrow-minded. If your build doesn’t generate might, then sure.
But a lot of thieves actually do run at least 15 points in acrobatics for power of intertia. With it alone it is worthwhile to run strength.
Well that’s talking wvw and pvp of course, in pve you probably don’t need acrobatics.

And you can also use Thrill of the Crime. And you can also use Orrian Truffle Stew. And you can shortbow blast someone else’s friendly fire field. Yes, there are plenty of ways Thieves can generate Might. What I said was that it’s not as consistant as say a warrior using forceful greatsword, or an ele who can blast their own fire fields, or so on, and as a result there are other options that might serve you better if you’re using one of the dozens of viable thief builds that don’t use acrobatics. And you’ll notice that I said that even considering all this strength runes are still pretty amazing. So if that’s being narrow minded, so be it.

DA – VI and III or VI and X. Mug does damage and heals you, but X is good if you’re doing lots of pistol-whip spamming.
CS – I, IX, and XI. IX is a bit more situational, but it works well with DAX for pistol whip spams.
Trickery – V.

For weapons, I’d suggest Sigil of Fire instead of Air on the sword. Sword is better for multiple mobs than for single target, so might as well use a sigil that hits multiple mobs.

For runes, Strength are the current go-to runes for pretty much everyone, with Scholar coming in second. Eagle, Fury, Citadel, and Ogre are all decent options if you want to mix things up and don’t care about bleeding-edge meta.

Hey all, just a quick note. Earning higher tiers of reward in the Boss Blitz in the Queen’s Pavilion is a great way to earn Festival Tokens, and Queen’s Gauntlet tickets – the rewards that the other activities within the festival give as well. If you check your inventory, you should see the tokens & tickets you have received.

So by using Great Jungle Wurm style coordination to get a gold reward, the only reward we get is tokens for buying skins that we already have from doing Living Story the last time around, and Queen’s Gauntlet tickets for entering fights and getting achievements that we already have from doing Living Story the last time around.

Cheers for anti-zerg philosophy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dakota.4591

Dakota.4591

The “anti-zerg” mechanic of just inflating the boss’s HP to the point it takes 30 minutes to kill is a terrible, terrible mechanic. You can easily take a small group in to fight a boss, get it down to half, only to have the zerg roll in atop of you and scale it up. Having a boss go from a challenge to kitten near unkillable for reasons beyond your control, especially when you are actively trying to avoid this anti-zerg mechanic, is terrible, terrible design.

You want an anti-zerg mechanic? Hard-cap the Pavilion at, say, 40-50 players each. The only way to keep people from zerging is to actively prevent them from forming up in the first place. 50 people is a zerg for one boss, but split up over all six is closer to the ideal number, and will go a long way in preventing people from getting screwed by the zerg.
