Why not go back to the GW1 Districts system?

There was an update a while ago from the team which may or may not be helpful

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Megaservers-8/first#post6019618

It is useful because it clearly illustrates how despite the fact that over 6 months ago Anet was clearly aware that the mega server set up is a total mess, like so many other issues, they have done absolutely nothing about it.

“Megaservers succeeded in its intended objectives: getting guilds and friends together on the same map, "

You are indeed correct, Megaservers are currently set up to reserve space on the map (which prevents too many other players from joining) to accommodate guildies and friends who may or may not turn up later.

After a short time, when the (may or may not guildies and friends) don’t turn up, the system decides that the map is underpopulated and tries to send everyone off to another new or underpopulated map – rinse and repeat.

End result is lots of underpopulated maps constantly being created and closed and player frustration as they are shunted around.

This was NEVER The Megaserver objective – It’s original objective was to increase map populations as the named original server populations fell, however (as I’m sure you know) one of the (minor) problems after launch was that it wasn’t correctly configured; particularly for guild missions, to ensure players (even if they were partied) ended up on the same map.

So; after a quick fix we got to the situation we are at now. In the meantime though, HOT launched; where the success of every map is reliant on full maps and group events – not surprisingly the ‘empty maps/HOT is not solo friendly/DS is dead’ threads (which all stem from Megaservers not working) started to regularly appear since.

Quite why, No one at Anet is competent enough to make the connection between the way Megaservers are set up and how they relate to the majority of the complaints about HOT gameplay is extraordinary.

The solution is quite simple – Fill one map at a time and let the minority who want to join other players already in maps, taxi in.

Having named characters ‘apparently’ in several places at the same time is sadly one of the issues that will always occur in a ‘living world’ type situation in MMO’s.

Until such time as some company is brave enough to challenge players wishes and produce an MMO where major development events are playable only once or while they are ‘active’ for a short period, having dead characters pop up or appearing in multiple locations, when you replay earlier instances, is always going to happen.

To be fair to Anet, they did make a pretty good attempt at this during LS1 and should be commended for that.

Would be lovely if the Dev who designed this could explain their thinking, because I am baffled.

What were you trying to achieve?, No one complained about the anomaly device from the previous event which worked perfectly well – What was wrong with displaying a nice big clear system message when clicked that informed the player ‘A crazed x has been spotted on map Y’?

I had no idea this was even a thing until I saw someone with red glowing eyes near the bank and wondered why the glowing crimson mask had changed.

Followed the dulfy stuff and now I`m waiting for the wyvern to spawn and hoping it`s not like in the others — most of the creatures spawned in a different map location from the guide.

If Dulfy and the other external timer map providers all quit, this game would be dead within a month.

Anet’s ability to provide clear information in game has always been poor but this event is so poorly designed it’s beyond belief.

At least this is now “fixable” now that Levvi’s Device correctly shows whether or not a creature has been killed on a particular map. It just takes someone to organize a big enough group.

Does it really?

All I see is a tiny red cloud that you have no chance of seeing unless you are fully zoomed in, that pops up for a millisecond and then vanishes.

Perhaps the Devs thought that players would enjoy a ‘clever’ new puzzle game where players have to decode and identify the information contained in the little red cloud?

So much for “challenging group content” boosting the game – Casuals leaving was expected.
Too bad most “hardcore groupers” seem to spend ingame-gold instead of RL-cash.
Catering to the least profitable group 101?

I never buy gems with gold, I spend 100s of euros per year on gems
buying gems with gold is a bad use of my time

Let me ask, do you feel you get your money’s worth on Gem Purchases?

Not really, considering I could buy at least 10 full AAA games for my gem purchases

yea I kinda thought so.

The last time I bought a series of Gems was on the Heroes weapon sets (Kasmeer’s Staff, Majory’s Daggers…ect) when they were first released.

Since then I have just banked Gold into Gems on a weekly Basis, but I cant bring myself to buy anything on the store anymore. Its all just a bunch of lame stuff that will do nothing for me. Its all Glider Skins and outfits.

They need to change their direction with what they are doing here. and fast.

But what could they sell in shop to make more money without going straight up pay to win? I would like to see armor sets over outfits again, but Anet insists they are too much work

Lots of things, actually. But anything I say on the subject will start a flame war and ruin this thread :-)

But, does not have to be pay to win to be successful.

Well then, here’s your thread to suggest what will make ANet tons of money, Suggestions: Gemstore items

I look forward to seeing what you post there.

Gem store sales are the issue the report highlights, they are not however the underlying long term problem.

Sadly, instead of attempting to fix those underlying problems. ALL of which are related to the release of HOT, Anet has decided that another expansion is the answer!

… Plus you didn’t even have to get GWAMM to get Champion of the Gods. There were like 15 statues you could pick up without maxing any titles at all or even touching PvP hardly, …

Champion of the Gods means maxing HOM, the HOM tab Honor, means you have to get 40 titles.
You get GWAMM after getting 30 titles, so you WILL get GWAMM before you get Champion of the Gods and there is no way someone who has Champion of the Gods doesn’t have GWAMM.
With GWAMM you don’t need the pvp title, but you do need that for Champion of the Gods.

Incorrect.

Many of the titles that counted towards the HOM reward were character and not account based, so if you accumulated different titles on lots of different characters, you could easily achieve Champion of the gods without getting anywhere near GWAMM.

Happens to me every other time I’m in a squad during the DS meta. Then upon seeing a 50/50 full map —> “Map is empty, receive a volunteer boon to transfer to a more populated map.” But only dumps me to an even less populated map.

Then I Look at squad map again… 50/50. This really needs to be fixed asap.

Get to DS early. Join a squad of peoiple waiting to go to a new map. Go to the new map. Get the maximum time limit and never have to deal with that again. Profit.

Anet actually gets round to fixing the megaserver problem that they have been aware of since before HOT launched and affects all HOT maps – Player can play the game as designed and not have to waste time map hopping to find a playable map. Even more profit

Volunteer Map Reward Bonus (changing maps)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Daroon.1736

It has been long overdue I write about this on the forum. Today was the last straw. Since the megaserver came out, wasn’t it meant to push players together (or at least something like that)? Now we have these pop ups that give you a reward for changing to, a supposedly more populated map. Or at least it says the one you’re on has few players.

It is driving me crazy and I am sure I’m not the only one??

It pops up at the weirdest times and doesn’t do what its supposed to. It’s popped up when the map is plentiful (or as it seems and we’re taxiing), and then people leave and that in itself causes issues.

It pops up, for example, in Auric Basin last night, my husband and I were on a failing Tarir map and so we clicked it, and we were taken to an even worse map without the choice of going back. It is so annoying. This has happened countless times.

Really regardless of whether the map is full/empty, the pop up is happening too often and is really annoying.

This explains why:

Seems to me a reasonable solution is for Anet to make Taxi’ing easier for players. It’s actually a pretty good approach I think.

The principle is pretty much the same as Districts were in GW1, so yes it can work.

The problem is, Unlike GW1 which had a drop down menu so you could see and choose which numbered instance to join, GW2 has no such feature so it’s all pot luck.

Lol – Are you seriously trying to say that Anet is incapable of re-writing a complex algorithm in 6+ months?

They have not said that re-coding is complicated, what they have said is

You were the one who said it was down to rewriting an algorithm.

Taxi’ing to events is not a fine player led solution, it is last resort fix devised by players to overcome a system that is not fit for purpose

Well it’s up to you. You can take the awesome taxi to the event (that you probably couldn’t be bothered getting to early) or you can see it as a system that isn’t fit for purpose. When in fact it’s fitting its purpose exactly.. getting players onto a specific map to do an event.

No. And you know why? Because Dragons Stand isn’t dead. You (not you personally obviously) may end up on a dead map. Solution.. taxi. Or you know, get there early.. but we’ll go with taxi.

I’ve posted a few times in that thread. The game is perfectly playable solo except for the bits that aren’t mean to be played solo. Which can be whatever your definition is for you but might not be the same for me. I’ve taken all my 9 80s round VB and am cycling them through AB then TD then DS. They’re all glass, I’ve enjoyed doing it on every one of them, using zergs for defence and fun and joining people doing HP’s. If you (again not you personally) can’t navigate the maps or kill the mobs then you’re doing it wrong. Really.

Pretty much a player problem this.
It goes “I tried to turn up a minute or two before the incredibly popular meta started and can’t get in”
Player problem. Get there early.

Thanks for clarifying, I understand now – Anet can do no wrong and all the problems associated with HOT maps are down to players and not the designers.

Lol – Are you seriously trying to say that Anet is incapable of re-writing a complex algorithm in 6+ months?

Anet have said it’s complicated. Players saying “lol I bet it’s not that hard” is pointless, we don’t have access to their resources or code.

Creating multiple maps with a max capacity of 4 or 5 people, because 50 of their friends may or may not joint them is an utterly ludicrous approach.

Well it has worked fine for years. Taxi’ing to events is a fine, player-led solution. And you know we should be more grateful to all those people who shelled out hundreds of gold for their commander tags, who take the time to learn the events and organise the map they are in, who set up taxis so that others (including a lot of really lazy people who can’t just turn up on time to something) can do the events. Or, alternatively, this is an utterly ludicrous setup that clearly never works for anyone.

They have not said that re-coding is complicated, what they have said is:

“Megaservers does what Gw1 did ala districts, except automatically. The downside, which really became apparent with HoT, is that we have an almost impossible problem to solve: how do we reserve space for all the people that will want to play together but are not currently playing together? Fans have solved his problem with taxiing, which is amazing, but obviously that is not the best solution. Or perhaps if it is the right way to do it we should make it easier. But the basic problem is a map holds N people and if we leave space for M people that may or may not show up, then it really only supports N-M people and if M is large, the map is mostly empty. Megaservers favors parties when grouping, which is why taxiing works: a small buffer is reserved so parties can generally get into the map together. But reserving say for an entire guild, where we don’t know how many will show up for any particular map, is a hard problem conceptually, never mind the programming of it. I’m open to suggestions.”

The problem is they have set up the system to prioritize leaving spaces on a map for players who may want to join over filling maps with players who actually are playing and I will say it again, this is an utterly ludicrous approach.

The question was, “is ANet ever going to fix Megaservers.”

  • Yes, ANet is working on a fix (links above) and
  • No, they haven’t said they think LFG/Taxi is sufficient.

That particular post is 2 months old and the first statements regarding ‘fixing’ megaservers were over 6 months ago, so I think the question is a valid one.

Let’s not forget that amongst other things, they said they were going to introduce a new set of legendary weapons.

What else do you want them to say? Megaservers have been around for a few years at this point. The issues that affect the new maps are only ~6 months old, since largely they were minor before HoT (and it took a while before anyone started to recognize the pattern).

I get that you’d like more information, but it won’t be anything newsworthy. Megaservers use complex algorithms to decide how to open/close and when to ask for volunteers. Fixing it isn’t going to be simple; it’s not something that is going to take 2-6 months.

And if you don’t trust their answer because they cancelled 12 of 16 legendaries, what difference does it make what they say?

tl;dr ANet’s working on changing how megaservers work. Up to you whether you want to wait it out patiently or impatiently.

Lol – Are you seriously trying to say that Anet is incapable of re-writing a complex algorithm in 6+ months?

If you read the Reddit post identified above, you will see that the apparent issue is not the complexity of the programming involved, rather it is the ‘impossible’ problem of trying to ensure that there is enough spaces on a map for friends and guildmates, should they wish to join.

Creating multiple maps with a max capacity of 4 or 5 people, because 50 of their friends may or may not joint them is an utterly ludicrous approach.

^That solution sounds a lot like Servers. Player A is playing on good server/map 1, and his/her friend wants to join. ‘Sorry, server/map is full. Your friend can not join you, but you have the option to transfer to not-so-good server/map 2 and play together there.’

Not sure that pleases/will please the majority. /shrug

If the number of maps available was based on the number of players actually playing rather than on how many we think might want to join those playing, there would not be any not-so-good servers as they would all fill very quickly.

Servers or Districts is already what we have, the problem is that when a player currently joins a map M spaces are reserved for him, just in case friend or Guild members want to join.

If we assume that M represents online friends and Guild mates and N is the map capacity – If player A joins a map with a capacity of 75 and he has 25 guild mates/friends online m=25 and the map is effectively one third full. As soon as a couple of other players join the map with a similar amount of guild mates online, the map is considered full and another one is created.

No wonder HOT maps are always empty – it’s is a completely ludicrous system.

I recommend checking out this link and scrolling to the bottom under the server section. There are a few links to where devs are talking about megaservers. I summarized it a bit by saying it’s a difficult fix and to use taxi’s in the meantime, but what I said is echoed in the AMA but in more detail.

Many thanks for the link – very interesting reading that explains everything. Here’s a quote from Stephen The studio Tech director:

“Megaservers does what Gw1 did ala districts, except automatically. The downside, which really became apparent with HoT, is that we have an almost impossible problem to solve: how do we reserve space for all the people that will want to play together but are not currently playing together? Fans have solved his problem with taxiing, which is amazing, but obviously that is not the best solution. Or perhaps if it is the right way to do it we should make it easier. But reserving say for an entire guild, where we don’t know how many will show up for any particular map, is a hard problem conceptually, never mind the programming of it. I’m open to suggestions.”

Here’s a suggestion:

Instead of creating dozens of empty maps every time a player joins a region and hoping that M players from his/her guild turn up to fill it – create ONE map at a time (lets call it map 1), fill it and when it is full, create another (map 2) and so on – let players know what map instance they are on by having this information available and have a little drop down box so they can easily move between the available instances and problem solved.

It is actually. In the AMA they stated that they are working on the problem but it’s not as simple as flipping a switch or adjusting a few lines of code. In fact, the megaserver system is currently being reworked and has been for several months.

In the meantime, you can just use taxis in the LFG sections. Thanks to squads being able to post spots getting meta maps are much easier now.

I’m sorry but it’s been well over 6 months since they issued a statement indicating that there were ‘problems’ with Mega servers – they managed to produce an expansion in around the same time so any competent set of dev’s; or more importantly management, would have prioritized fixing a system that underpins ensuring that HOT maps are playable.

Taxi’s are not the solution – Taxi maps only tend to be advertised towards the end of the meta cycle and so fill very quickly and it’s pot luck as to whether you get ‘map full’ or not. When maps are advertised earlier and you join X in whatever map it is, most of the time I find that the squad I have joined is spread out over god knows how many map instances and as there is no way of identifying who is in what map, more frustration ensues.

Just look at this sub forum, on this page alone there are the following threads:

’Dragon’s Stand map dead’ – Mega server issue
‘full meta map’ – Mega server making too many empty maps issue
‘Unplayable Solo’ – Mega server issue – If every map was full, the maps would be playable.
‘L2P – I did HOT Why can’t you?’ – Discussion of various issues but mainly the un-playability of HOT maps due to empty maps.

A combined total of over 40,000 views and nearly 1,000 replies and ALL of them are indirectly related to the fact that Megaservers are not working and need fixing as a matter of absolute priority.

IMHO virtually all of the negative posts about the playability of HOT could be solved by fixing the broken mega server system.

Despite wanting to play these maps, I am absolutely sick and tired of being shunted around from one empty map to another.

Is it really so difficult to design a system that fills up one map at a time instead of creating god knows how many sparsely populated maps and just keeps moving players between them until they get so frustrated they give up?

It’s been well over six months since we had an announcement that Anet was aware that a fix was needed and yet still we are waiting for a fix to a system that basically underpins the playability of a whole expansion.

Added – PLEASE READ

As I was kindly pointed to a thread which explained what the current ‘problem’ is – I would like to use an analogy simplify the explanation of why megaservers are not working and invite others to comment:

A man walks into a bar ……………

Sitting down he notices that despite the fact that it is Friday evening the bar is rather empty, in fact he is only the 5th person – he orders a drink and notices another man who tries to enter the bar but is turned away.
Curious, he questions the doorman who explains, the capacity of the bar is 50 people but as there are 5 people inside and he and the 4 others may have friends who want to join them later, they hold spaces for them in case they arrive and cannot let any more people in.

As the man returns to his seat, one of the other customers leaves and a few minutes later the Barman announces that because there are only 4 people in the bar and none of their friends are coming, they are closing and everyone should go find another bar.

Totally perplexed, the man is kicked out of the bar and goes in search of another ….

Half an hour later, after entering and being kicked out of half a dozen bars for the same reason, he manages to contact a friend who has managed to find quite a lively bar, sadly though, when he arrives, he finds there are several hundred people waiting in to get in and the bar is totally full.

Simply put – The reasons Mega-servers are not working is because Anet is prioritizing holding spaces for players who may turn up to play over actually filling maps with players who are actually playing.

Am I the mad one or is this totally bonkers?

However, I will comment about those other, “frustrated with HOT” posters who fill the forum with angry threads. Most of them are not like you, or at least, they don’t show the respect and good intention you are showing.

Most try to speak in name of every one. Most aren’t open to any discussion. Most don’t make any research before writing. Most don’t want to even try. Most don’t even try to be rational.

Their typical argumentation boils down to:
“I’m representig all Gw2 players, I can’t win, I’m frustrated, this thing is trash, nerf NOW, anyone who don’t agree with me is a White Knight, I will NOT try to learn, I paid to not learn, I’m entitled to ask anything”.

These guys/gals DESERVE the L2P treatment, and, IMHO, they don’t deserve your support.

Every map in HOT was designed to be played by large groups of players working together
however the system that underpins the whole design philosophy (Megaservers) is (and has been well prior to the launch of HOT) utterly broken.

No one should be telling other players to LTP – everyone should be questioning why Anet designed a whole expansion around a broken megaserver system and six months after launch we are still waiting for them to fix it.

It’s quite simple – If the maps were full, no one would need to play ‘solo’ and virtually all of the HOT Unplayable threads would vanish.

The problem is not the map design it’s the fact that (once again) the underlying system that should ensure that the game is playable is broken.

you might enjoy mazes, but i dont
even without mobs, the maps would still be hostile
they were clearly made for a minority of players
when you use the majority of resources on a minority, you wont stay in the business for long

Agreed TD is a horrible mess of a map however most players will only need to explore once for story and achievements etc – thereafter, if they fixed the mega server system and you were confident that the map you joined would be reasonable full, even TD might hold reasonable replay value.

Respawn rate on low pop maps

Respawn rates are not the problem as they have a system to ensure that there are no low population maps…. unfortunately the system (Mega servers) has been hopelessly broken for over a year.

Once Anet finally understand that it is broken mega servers that is the problem with HOT, they may get round to fixing it.

So Scribing is fixed?

I’m thinking the example recipe I gave should look more like this:

A) 1 Simple Scribing Kit which requires:

1 Green Wood Pen
which Requires
1 Copper Nib

And
1 Simple Ink Set
which requires
1 Crystalline Bottle
1 Jug of Water
1 Pouche of Brown Pigment
1 resonating sliver

B) 1 Sheet of extra course sandpaper which requires:

1 Sheet of Coarse Paper
which requires
1 Green Wood Pulp
1 Jug of Water
1 Bolt of Jute

And
2 Piles of Coarse Sand

C) 1 Vial of Linseed Oil which requires:
1 Pile of Flax Seeds
5 Milling Stone
1 Milling Basin

Still pretty complex for ONE ingredient but this would be a step in the right direction.

Though one more fix they could make would be adding the ability to put most of those mats in the mat storage. Then scribing would be doubly fixed.

Agreed on this point, but IMHO the complexity of all of the recipes is still ridiculous.

Map Volunteering broken

Anet claimed they were going to fix mega servers, it was supposed to come with the April patch but then Mike took over and we never heard anything about it again.

It probably got canceled, but they do know it is broken and not working. Hopefully the fixes make the next patch cycle.

The idea is that it takes 2+ mostly empty maps and combines them into a single map which then gets more populated. However right now it takes 1 empty map, opens a new empty map and then you have 2 mostly empty maps and the new players are split over both these maps. This then triggers it again, opening a 3rd new map and now you have 3 maps that are useless.

Quite why Anet haven’t worked out that this issue is the reason that so many players do not enjoy HOT maps is frankly quite astonishing.

Had they resolved this months ago, HOT maps would be a joy to play because they would always be full and there would always be something to do.

Does Anet consider Scribing fixed?

Every recipe I see requires a finishing kit which consists of the following (simple kit example):

A) 1 Simple Scribing Kit which requires:

1 Green Wood Pen
which Requires
1 Copper Nib + 1 Green Wood Dowel
And
1 Simple Ink Set
which requires
1 Crystalline Bottle
1 Jug of Water
3 Pouches of Brown Pigment
And
1 Bag of Glittering Blotting Powder
which requires
5 piles of glittering dust
1 resonating sliver

B) 1 Sheet of extra course sandpaper which requires:

1 Sheet of Coarse Paper
which requires
1 Green Wood Pulp
1 Jug of Water
1 Bolt of Jute
And
10 Piles of Coarse Sand
which requires
At least 100 silky sand

C) 1 Vial of Linseed Oil which requires:
20 Pile of Flax Seeds
5 Milling Stone
1 Milling Basin

Scribing fixed? I don’t think so, C’mon Anet sort it out pls.

Why not then, implement a mechanic in which the message does not appear ?

This will stop you leaving in the first place.

Yes, it is broken – Anet acknowledged that mega servers were not working about 12 months ago.

Still waiting for a fix.

gw2 population since HoT

Typical Hot Play session.

This map is empty would you like to move to another empty map? – This map is empty would you like to move to another empty map? – This map is empty would you like to move to another empty map? – This map is empty would you like to move to another empty map? – This map is empty would you like to move to another empty map? – Ad infinitum

Population is probably fine, they just need to get around to fixing mega servers.

I don't understand the opposition to mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There is no opposition to mounts, they simply are not possible with the current graphics engine.

It has been stated numerous times by devs that they would like (and have tried) to have characters sit on chairs that currently exist in the game and it is NOT possible.

Anet knows they would be able to sell lots of mounts in the gem stores so if the amount of work re-coding was cost effective they would have done it long ago.

End of story.

This is good, I can see some interesting positive impact from such a “small” change as automating warning messages within 10 minutes after a report.

I personally don’t feel GW2 has this kind of issue though. If we’re going to compare, by personal experience, LoL’s community toxicity versus GW2’s is, well, non comparable. In the last year or so I don’t recall any need to report a player(other than gold sellers etc). Of course, just because I don’t get it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen at all, but GW2’s community is far more enjoyable, and perhaps not needing such a strict measure.

Out of curiosity though, what do you perceive as “disruptive players in GW2

Try playing a couple of games of ranked PvP.
