Currently running this build

But it doesnt tell the whole story as I have multiple setups for weaponry, armor pieces and change traits every now and then depending on the situation and seriousness of play.

Here is a solo random zerging video in bay to show that I am probably running at 50% efficency given all the F buttons I miss and targetting mistakes, lol. Sidenote: I am using magic find food. I didnt get anything usefull, jokes on me

But it is a nice build for survival that I think few run.

How do people interpret this as precursor hunt? Just curious.

The datamined information only mentions using legendary skins in PvP by turning in shards (no doubt you get them from tPvP). That’s not a precursor hunt. In fact it has zero to do with precursors.

The info with the rusty BL chest doesnt even imply a precursor hunt, just another cheap way to get us to spend money on gems.

Since people always scoff at this combo I thought I’d post some of my videos from last week I’ve been using both to test editing and Nvidia Shadowplay. If you have a newer 600+ series, download latest drivers and check it out! Its still in beta and lacks alot of desirable features but its quite promising.

(MSI Afterburner, 90% quality @720p for performance reasons. I went overboard with cutting the video short though, lol)

(Nvidia Shadowplay 1080p compressed to slightly less than half size @ 24/high profile in Handbrake. This video includes bad failings at following commander, hehe)

In terms of fps drop I dont even notice anything when I turn Shadowplay on with my GTX670 (I have auto-record last minutes disabled, only manual. Dont want to slaughter my SSDs). MSI afterburner was noticable on turning it on, but decently acceptable.

If I see somone using the GS in caudecus villa in all those small rooms, I’m like “… seriously?

Which matter why exactly? Even at point blank range the greatsword kill single targets nearly as fast as sword/sword so unless you’re a speed running min/maxer that like to complain on peoples weapon of choice it doesnt really matter. Yes yes the latter combo does have higher dps but we’re talking about that big bad mob dying in 30 seconds instead of 36 seconds.

But hey maybe I’m damaged from that one time doing CoE with melee Guardians and Warriors that died before last path 2 Subject Alpha even got to 80% HP (AoE circles ftw) and left me alone to solo him with greatsword/staff O____O

Mesmers really lame in PVP?

in Mesmer

Dawdler.8521

Tbh I’m having great fun in sPvP with my Mesmer.

The first thing to realize is that no, a bunker Mesmer isnt all that impressive. Can you build one? Of course! But you’re simply no match to a bunker Guardian/Warrior/Necro/Engineer/whatever. A Mesmer by design is evasive and that dont go well with bunkering on a capping point. Its just the way the gameplay mode is designed and it wont change unless they make capping points with 5x current radius.

So my tip is to have a damage oriented point of view. It’ll be alot more fun. If you want to be extravagant you can go condition, but personally I went raw weapon skills while balancing out the stats with the amulet. Greatsword/staff on a 20/30/20 (gs/staff traited) valkyrie build. 24K HP is enough to raise a couple of eyebrows in combat while the crit chance/damage is acceptable at 45/35. Speed runes added on top for mobility, heh.

The only real danger is really heavy condition builds (nasty condition Necros), I generally run with null field in addition to tp/decoy but its really not enough. Oh well, cant have everything. Everything usually die anyway to an OP Necro :/

Finally Weapon Skins We Can Buy!!!

Dawdler.8521

The lower range “exotic” weapon skins in this game range from about 30-200+ gold (400-3000+ gems),

The most I ever paid for a skin was 26g for Bonetti’s Rapier shortly after it was introduced. To me that is very ‘high end’ and the only reason I bought it was because I had a drop I sold for 68g, and it was perfect for my ranger….

Apart from that, a couple of rare times I paid around 3-4g for a particular skin I liked on the TP, and thought that was expensive. Many of the skins I have I bought from various karma vendors, a few others I got with dungeon tokens, Otherwise I go with whatever drops for me that I like.

So yes, to me 600 gems is much too expensive for a one-time use skin ..

I crafted Bifrost before it was ascended and you could change stats so to me its nothing. I am certain there are thousands of other players that will say the same, lol. kitten just a single part of legendary crafting is twice the cost of the gemstore skin (ie icy runestones) and you got 20 or so of those parts to make (that’s ignoring the 6000-8000 gems worth of precursor you need).

600 gems for a good quality skin with an effect is simply laughable. Not that I care though, we’ve wanted gemstore skins for a while. Wont buy it anyway. Got bifrost

Dawdler.8521

I’m not a huge fan of the GS. It’s got some fun skills and good DPS. but I hate the fact that any enemy can kitten the auto-attack just by staying close to you. Are there any other weapon skills in the game that have that restriction?

All ranged weapon skills have that restriction. You dont exactly see a Guardian constantly swatting you with 1 when you’re behind him… Mesmer still have it good to be able to deploy clones behind on the run as long as the target is in range, no other class can do anything close.

And yes, its my biggest pet peeve. I’m an oddball that even prefer the greatsword in zerg fights (guild raids) and when it works it work great – basicly you got the power of the sword at any range, giving you instant response and more survivability. BUT when it dont work you’re shooting blanks. Autotargetting is… not good. I swear over it constantly. I had moments where I wreck absolute havoc to large groups and I have had even more moments when I wonder wtf just happened because I walked through 50 people without doing an ounce of damage.

However I consider that a way to make the game more difficult to me. I want to learn how deal with it and I want to become good at it. If I didnt have small personal goals like this in GW2 I would have been bored long ago.

@Dawdler. Just curious to know what your gs/staff mantra build looks like. Mind sharing it? Thanks

Dont have a build link, but to make it short – Any combination of 0/X/X/X/0, you want (currently testing 0/25/20/25/0 for a change, usually run 0/30/20/20/0). Mantra healing, staff trait are the primary traits, the rest I swap depending on what I feel like and the zerg size. Soldiers/knights armor with cavalier/soldier trinkets. Buffed one should achieve around 2000 power, 2000 precision, 2000 toughness, 1500 vitality, 50-60% crit dmg. Mantra heal, cleansing mantra, stability mantra, then whatever of your choosing (often times than not veil for guild runs). When I get gored of mantra healing I just swap that trait for something else and change the heal to ether feast.

Yeah, I can never decide so I call it an omni-build
The only thing I cant do is conditions (healing dont count since its totally worthless on a Mesmer).

@ Dawdler:

There is wannabes and triehards on every server but you and your group really makes my respect for piken fade away. We were 6, you were 8 plus 2 randoms running mini pain train (4 people wearing hammer out of 10, faceroll much, ha?) and resetting mutliple times on garrison waypoint to rejoin the fight when finished.

Immediately after the fight you or some of your friends whispered my guildies:“You scrubs, we rocked you!” Yeah, with almost double the numbers and a waypoint in close proximity.

Immediately after the fight a Buka joined our group and called us noobs for winning 14vs5.

Somehow I knew one of you “pros” would immediately come here and write about his heroic deeds. Pathetic performance, more hammers next time please, badboy.

Seriously, are you guys so desperate, that you are proud winning versus outnumbered opponents and then brag about it? I would die in shame and switch guild if I had someone like you in mine.

Yes, we where quite proud. Or at least I was. It wasnt a flawless victory (we made so many mistakes and it was chaotic), but a victory nonetheless. Seen you in this round and previous rounds, very good roamers that rarely (if ever) are seen zerging. Highly skilled players with optimised PvP builds that hurt alot, being focused by you is almost certain death. Indeed the opposition need to outnumber you or at the very least bring the same numbers of equally skilled players with good builds. Maybe you havent noticed that yourselves? I guess tunnelvision affect everyone.

But hey I look at it on the bright side – I doubt Buka held any respect for a casual guild they’ve never fought before to begin with (please do correct me if I’m wrong) and I dont have any respect for Buka anymore. So tbh I dont think I will die of shame, we’re pretty much even.

Sword/Focus is a must have in PvE open world.

Nope.

Is it the better choice of weaponry? Arguably, yes. But its definetly not a must. You only limit your choice of weapons if you think “ZOMG ZERKER!!!” every second when playing. Running around with gs/staff will perform just fine otherwise. Especially in the open PvE world where it doesnt really matter. PvE dungeons is another matter, since you generally want as much melee dps as possible. But then again its not that horrible to speedrun CoF in 5 minutes instead of 4:30 unless you are a min/maxer.

Either way I dont really see what the problem is, just go with whatever you feel like at the moment. You should have all weapons in your inventory – in fact you should have multiple variants of the same weapons. Even for my staff focused Mesmer I have 4 different greatswords. No matter the situation it wont be perfect. If you run around with sword/focus and encounter a situation where a staff would have been better, you’ll wish for a staff. If you run around with a staff in a situation where sword/focus would have been better, you’ll wish for that as well.

Cant have everything. That’s the point.

Justifying the staff in PvE is easy – jump into a group of 10 NPCs, kill them with ease and walk away with 100% hp. Protection does more than you think. Especially when you trait in the toughness tree. All out zerker is fantastic single target, not so great against large groups when you’re solo. You can test it out in WvW, just solo the camps. My gs/staff mantra Mesmer can maintain >90% hp during a fight, while standing smack in the middle and pumping out damage. My sword/sword/gs zerker Mesmer spend half the time dodging and running just to avoid dying. It take about the same time :/

This sunday my server spent nearly 2 hours fighting inside an enemy garrison. The lord was ressed maybe… 60 times. Or 80. I dont really know, I lost count. His downtime was about 20-30 seconds on average. I didnt kill it every time and I still got half a dozen keep lord bags. We only had enough manpower to control the circle but even when we where outnumbered they couldnt break us. All they did was send in the warriors.

Its great fun. No really. Great fun. That’s how Anet want the game to be played, forever trying to zerg down an immortal target. I dare them to tell us otherwise, that this isnt intented game mechanics. Because lets face it, they cant. If they say it wasnt their intention to make keeps uncappable by infinite lord ressing, it mean we can report everyone ressing the lord as exploiting wohoo!!!

Or just have the commander tag BE your guild logo in some way (for some logos this may not work, i honestly havent looked at the logo customization menu in over a year…)

The entire point of this idea which has been suggested for over a year and never acted upon by Anet is to have it private (ie hidden, only visible to the guild). Not display what guild run where on the map. Granted, different icons for different types of raid (ie guild, dolly, ruin, pug, etc) would be an excellented addition and allow tactical separation of the zergs but you know… If Anet are incapable of modifying the commander system to allow the simplest of tickboxes that’s just not going to happen. Ever. They want us to random zerg in one big blob. Why, I have no idea.

I have no idea how many times we killed the keep lord since he was up 10-30 seconds later from suicidal Warriors. JS simply could not kick out Piken (despite numerous feeble attempts) while Piken did not have anywhere near the manpower to cover every angle (a random zerg in the center plus a single small guild group meant JS had free entry routes everywhere).

Anet really should do something about that kittened mechanic :/

Revive sickness, a new mechanic perhaps?

in WvW

Because what he implied is that you dont need revive sickness because of the downstate mechanic.

No what I implied is that “revive sickness” is already in the game, ie exactly what I said.

Is it a perfect implementation? Haha, no. It has flaws. It is too fast for multiple people to res someone downed in the middle of combat and yes, I do think the health debuff should be taken up a notch in order to make a death more severe. Most notably, you shouldnt be able to res from killed state while in combat.

Actually, there was a strange glitch at reset. A lot of people got kicked out of the queue instead of going in. Then there seemed to be very few of us (on EB anyway) compared to the massive zergs we were facing.
Dunno what that was about – maybe it was just subjective.

Its the so called “queues” at work.

On reset, the border we joined seemed to let in around 20 people (judging by people going missing by the portal) and then it was insta-queue of course. 5 minutes later, queue popped (but we thought it was full?) and the first thing you hear over TS/vent is of course “my queue popped!”, “oh yeah, mine too?”, “guys, pop!” etc. Upon joining WvW, there where around 20 guys that had joined (no one else at the spawn so easy to see).

So yeah… “queue”…

Rethink WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

I really wish people would just let go of ideas that’s never ever going to happen and the devs has said so as well. AoE limitation is there to keep the game playable. It lags enough as it is.

Focus ideas on things that actually can happen. I’m fairly sure the devs appreciate filtering out the pointless from the “hm we might actually want to test this”. There are tons of ideas on how to discourage zerging without making the game unplayable by upping AoE limit.

My personal favorite is actually showing “danger areas” along with local outnumbered buff. For example, if no one is near Redvale but there is a 50 man zerg there, you will not only see sword but you actually see the zone (ie that area of the map) note that there is a high concentration of enemies there. If your server only have a few peeps there they have outnumbered buff, even if the rest of the map is “even” in terms of balance.

See? Such a simple thing to “rethink WvW” without making it unplayable. No more playing find-the-zerg crap. Your server will know there is a zerg there and even if it roll over single players for laughs they have no repair costs. Zergs are at a disadvantage – solo players get boons.

Set the game to run as admin in the shortcut and see if it still crashes. Be sure to run vent/ts as admin too after this or you wont be able to use push to talk, heh.

20+ second immobilize (movie)

in WvW

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

Not going to defend it, but the solution is real easy and not something that even require balancing changes. Anet could simply make cleansing prioritize immobilize/chill/cripple.

The problem is the fact that people abuse stacking conditions (necros in particular are nasty at this, oh the irony). Stack 6+ different conditions on someone and its impossible to get that immobilize off. Even if you cleanse 4 of them, they are reapplied in seconds. Its not only immobilize, posion is another thing that can be applied for 40+ seconds with no way to cleanse it until the next cooldown (which can be 20s+ away).

When you combine it all its… not good. You got 20s immobilize, 40s posion, 2s chill and 3 bleed stacks. Cleansing double whammo! You got 19s immobilize and 39s poison o__o

Untrue. You forget that there are always other mobs nearby. One cc from a skeleton or mummy may easily kill you in that fight if it comes in a bad moment. And as you can see there are two events running in the same place.

Lol the skeletons and mummies are wiped in seconds even by a few players.

Of course the skeleton boss crashing the party can be a little annoying, but he’s very easy to kill in comparison, its usually the candy count that start his missile phase and kill everyone focusing on the skeleton because they where too narrowminded to realize that the candy count doesnt say “hey that’s OK, I’ll just wait a bit until you killed my buddy”.

If one CC from a mob can easily kill you, you’re either packing too little cleansing or have very weak armor/low HP. A single player can keep the candy count in combat without dying while the rest of the zerg focus down the skeleton a bit further away. Of course assuming he knows the encounter.

My main still have well over 400 sp left after buying this “expensive” and completely worthless skill (and I have probably spent at least another 1000 sp on various stuff). Skillpoints arent worth any gold at all. Sure you’re not going to get 25 of them in one sitting unless you’re really hardcore, but we’re talking about a couple of days, a week at most to get them.

How much sp do you get just doing this living world story? Guessing most people will get more than 25 due to all the event grinding. I dont even think you can avoid getting it back just by playing the living story.

Power Vs. Condition

in Mesmer

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

You can only stack so much conditions and there are better condition classes.

Its really quite simple:

You join a group that now consist of 3 Mesmers and 2 Necros (yeah a little extreme lol).

Who do you expect to be condition specced and who do you expect to be direct damage specced?

If both of the Necros run conditions – which would not be surprising at all – 3 Mesmers running conditions will be completely ineffective. Basicly, you can only have a couple condition builds in a dungeon group or its pointless. People dont really expect Mesmers to run conditions because they are very good at direct spike damage by class design. In terms of conditions they are far, far more random than any other condition built class. Mesmer conditions is ALL RNG.

In open world PvE (ie boss events) the condition builds are even less effective.

There is no point in sPvP to begin with. tPvP team? No point in any class other than Guardian. WvW roamer? Yes, it is rather pointless to play one of the strongest dueling classes.

How exactly does queue system work?

in WvW

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

The queue it completely random in all aspects, example:

my guildy and I joined a BL at the same time. We both queued for EB when we got to the BL. 3 minutes later his queue popped and he got in. 20 minutes later (i’m still in the BL) another guildy comes and joins in the BL and queues up for EB. 40 minutes after that his queue pops. 3 hours after that my queue finally pops.

Well if its groups, its not random.

Think of it like… the server tiers. T1 is the “next in line” for pop and ideally where all players added in the queue. Your friend got an open spot in T1, then it was full. Unfortunetly the rest of the tiers was full as well, so you where added to Vabbi. When your other guildy came, there where queue spots open in T1 again which he joined. You are hopelessly stuck in Vabbi because no matter how much you requeue, the game goes “Aha but you’re already queued in the awesome Vabbi group! Doing nothing”. Eventually, after every tier group ahead of you has gotten their pop and been “deleted” (ie emptied, which is hard because people keep joining the groups) and Vabbi moved up the list you will pop.

No offense to Vabbi meant. Well maybe a little. Seriously, this is the only way I can explain how the queue works after seeing and experiencing it. I dont even understand how you can program a queue like this. Dont know if I should be impressed or horrified.

New Legendary staff?

No, I think there should only be one legendary weapon of each type.

HOWEVER…

They could add to the existing legendary-swap-stats system and give us the ability to swap skins. Happy colorful Bifrost is one skin, dark corrupted Bifrost is another, to give an example.

Haha who am I kidding, they will make another legendary staff you have to grind for a year and still only have 0.000000000000000000001% chance to find the 1500g precursor required in addition to that years of work.

How exactly does queue system work?

My less than educated guess:

At a certain percentage under max, queue pop. Lets say 80%. That’s why a bunch of players always pop at the same time, even when they arent in the same group.

On top of this, players are randomly added to a queue group. Its not a linear queue. Its different groups (even separate by PvE zones). You end up in a random group when you queue, depending on how full that group is (it would be 20% of WvW zone pop if 80% is the pop limit).

If people leave their wvw queue group, players are randomly put into it – the reason why some that queue later get in faster. They get into a group that was ahead of yours.

You can break the queue system by putting “your” group ahead of every other group as demonstrated by Sacrx. Much like how a new overflow is created, a new queue group is created ahead of everyone else.

Or its just pure random.

Well I have what passes as minimal broadband in the US, 3Mb, so this last 300MB big patch took about 18-20 minutes. Which is also why I backup the game weekly because downloading the entire game from scratch is 16+ hours for me.

Yes well unfortunetly there are still underdeveloped countries in the world, like the US.
That’s just the way it is :/

500mbps/1gbps was sooooo last year.

Double post, continue in the other one.

Baruch bay is ticking 320 at the moment (vs 240 and 135). You dont seem to have population problems?

Condition Damage Rumor I heard

Yeah, it would kinda make condition duration worthless unless they also made every condition last 1/5 as long and increased the damage another 5 times making it x25 per tick XD

Doesnt that make it… direct damage?

How would you go around it, hm?

Send a letter to Anet and ask them to pretty please send a physical disc copy of the latest update back to you?

Lol…

Just start the updater every now and then even if you’re not going to play, to keep the game updated.

Problem solved. Updates take like 20 seconds anyway.

Best commanding profession?

Ugh, this old again…

Being a guardian isnt going to help if no one wish to follow him into battle. Crappy guardians/warriors are badly over represented since people think its the ultimate commander class, then they die and cry all over the place because they ran into an impossible situations 3/4 of the people following him saw coming a mile away. If your pug zerg outnumber the enemy 4 to 1 then good for you, you could have played a Quaggan and still not die so arguing about what class you are is pointless.

Knowing the flow of battle is far more important than having the “correct” class. I had a laughable situation the other day where a commander stopped outside the door of a breached keep (rushing to defend) in order to stack buffs, while friendly defenders was dying inside. What do you think happened? Few listened. Everyone ran through the kitten door to help, there was no time to stack – especially not outside a keep that could have been taken any second.

During the evening less and less of us wanted to follow him regardless of the class. How strange :/

TLDR: Put the commander tag on your main or the class you enjoy the most in WvW. Even worse than seeing a poor commander is seeing someone play with a class he doesnt like playing.

No doubt this exploit will be removed, so you just wasted 50g you could have spent on 7 speed runes (19g). 7 traveler runes is around 60g instead, which is little extra cost from 50g to get something permanent.

But hey if you want to take the risk, go ahead lol.
