Since you cant really get high defense and high offense at the same time, there isnt really any “OP” build. You basicly swing either way in PvP – survive against multiple opponents or kill stuff. A hybrid build is generally going to be poor at both.

Personally I have found very little that can counter the raw weapons/HP build I’m using, condi necro bunker builds are the greatest foe but even they are fairly modest in PvP spec. 20/30/20/0/0 with greatsword/staff, barbarians/valkyrie/speed runes. Ether/blink/decoy/null field/moa. Very much doubt others find that OP. I dont even think anyone else use it :p

Ah yes, denial at its best… The only ones that could possibly see Asurans as “cute” is quite obviously Asurans, but since the Asurans with superior intellect cant possibly be cute, there must be something wrong with the cute Asurans, rather than the Asurans thinking other Asurans are too cute.

All other races think you’re all ugly hairless pompous rats.

Go to lions arch via the pvp menu (no cost), teleport to asura gates (no cost), travel to any city (no cost)?

The cost is load times multiplied by 3. I’d gladly spend 2 silver and some copper to avoid all that junk.

It’s because of the LA load times (especially at the start of fresh LS content) that I prefer to hang out in whatever cultural city is closest to me at the moment that isn’t LA.

Exactly. Time vs money. That’s the entire concept of the game economy.

I fail to see what the problem is. Maybe its not a very good way to travel freely between cities and it is timeconsuming, but it is possible.

Tbh I’d rather have a kitten portal in Orr so you can go to Orr for free. Right now, the only option AFAIK is to to port to Lions Arch, run all the way to one of the factions (err actually I dont know if all have the portals, at least Vigil does) and port to Fort Trinity, run through entire Straits Of Devastation (oh how we absolutely love to run through that zone) and onwards to Orr.

I consider that slightly worse than the horror of loading Lions Arch and clicking one more waypoint, before you can run those 20 meters to your city portal.

Another note, about that off-hand: Sacrx wants us to use the focus for the pull. It’s very effective against spreading blobs to drag them together and kill them in 1 spot rather than killing them 1 by 1.
But yeah, I guess torch can be good too for some more survivability or some more damage if you time it well with the prestige.

It worked great before the nerf, tbh now I think guardian greatsword does alot better job at pulling people together in open field. Especially if you want them on one spot, rather than flying all over the place like with the focus. For wall pulling the focus still have monopoly, I find it so incredibly boring to pack focus just because that one good use.

But hey if Sacrx say you have to use it, you have to use it. Personally I rather solo roam doing my own thing

Does anyone play without a speed buff?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

I must say, comparing traveler and speed runes I can’t see why one is so much more valuable than the other – speed at least stacks on stat (vitality) making it easier to focus on other stats through gear, whereas traveler is a mess of stats – ok boon duration and crit damage is nice, but not game changing.

For a very long time it was quite simple: The Speed runes didnt give the 25% bonus even though they where supposed to. You could get the whole set for about the cost of one Speed rune today. Subsequently, the only other rune with 25% (traveller) became more valuable.

If you want to ask why its that expensive then dont. Because nobody knows. Same reason why crappy Divinity runes are obscenely priced I guess.

Centaur dont work in practice while the focus doesnt offer perma-speed unless speccing everything for it. Like above said, playing without it is like running around perma-crippled.

WvW Zerg Build

in Mesmer

Posted by: Dawdler.8521

Dawdler.8521

It really depends on what kind of zerg we are talking about.

If its a completely random zerg, commander is not on TS, you’re not on TS and pretty much every fight is a moshpit that your side has a 50/50 chance of winning (ie did you bring the most people? Good.) then I would highly recommend a full ranged hybrid build, either direct damage damage or condition. It doesnt really matter which. Skills doesnt really matter either, go with selfish ones to stay alive.

If its an organized guild zerg, then its direct damage and ~3K armor all the way. You need to stay alive and you need to push damage when the commander says so. Condition damage is not effective here and better left to other classes like necros. You can use a PU spec – most organized guilds have multiple Mesmers and veil before engaging. Shatter spec work perfectly fine as well. Focus feedback specs work too of course, but personally I find them a little boring.

If its a really organized guild raid then shatter dps build bring the most oomph. Few go that far though. Red Guard perhaps

The two zerg specs I have personally found the most fun:
0/25/20/25/0 greatsword/staff healing mantra/condition mantra/stability mantra/feedback/timewarp. This is my greatstaff phantasm mantra heal spec that can plow through pretty much anything. Its meant as a ranged frontliner.
0/20/30/20/0 sword/torch/staff healing mantra/blink/decoy/null field/mass invis. This is more of a PU skirmisher spec aimed at going stealthed into the backline and disrupt but I also use it in the melee train if I’m in a group that has enough stability.

Both run direct damage@3K armor. With the PU in solo mode I reach 60% crit chance and 80% crit damage. Had a fun fight with a warrior yesterday – he failed to bring me below 90% HP. It took like 3 minutes to kill him due to heavy tank spec, lol :p

Its a rather cheezy spec, but at least I dont have to change between roaming and zerging. PU is the only spec I have find to reliably be able to counter roaming theives.

And with the pincer, for Portal bombs to succeed, they always have to take the enemy by surprise anyways, otherwise you’re just lining yourselves up to die

Which is generally why you cant portal bomb – you rarely take the enemy by surprise with it.

Personally I would use it for combat manouverability.

Lets say we have decent size Mesmers raid, 30ish. You engage another raid head on, plowing into them and going straight for the backline. Well, before that you dropped a couple of portals – hidden by the mass of players approaching. You only need to hold your ground for a couple of seconds, pop all your illusions and hopefully get some people down. By this time the enemy melee train should be swinging around to cover them, while their backline is probably manouvering to be on the other side (ie where you engaged from). When the melee train is about to engage you… Pop the portals. You’re suddenly inside their backline again. You’ve already won.

Fun fact: If 30 Mesmers stack and pop one mantra with restorative mantras at the same time, they will heal roughly 400,000 HP. Or bring 20 players from 0 to 20,000 HP in 2.5 seconds. And they can do that every 5 second if they really wanted. Waterfields? Lawl.

That said, you can actually use macro programs to simulate this already if you want . Be sure to have you channel preset, such as the map channel. Your macro would then go like this – you push a button, “enter”→your text entered letter by letter→“enter”. Unfortunetly you have to be standing still and not doing anything else. Ingame functionality would work alot better and it would be incredibly easy for Anet to just add keybindings to chat strings in the options menu (that’s like a mornings worth of work)

And incidently, discussing macros is also against forum rules so expect a thread closure, bleh.

Dawdler.8521

Portal Pincer: It always strikes me as strange that when I see a zerg try to Portal bomb, they only send one lone mesmer to be either killed, or have their portal bombed with AoEs. Why not send 2 or even 3 mesmers to place portals all around the enemy zerg and come at them from all sides? Even if they spot the first portal, they probably won’t be suspecting the second or third, and can get melted while they’re focusing on the first portal. Speaking of which…

Portal Feint: Essentially a fake portal bomb. Send out a mesmer to drop the portal and have a few honorable sacrifices (may your names be passed down in legend) to go through and get summarily destroyed when the enemy zerg drops all their big AoEs on the portal. Then have your zerg swoop in and hit them hard while all of their big attacks are on CD.

While the feint may actually work, the pincer is a sure recipe for disaster. If the enemy team is actually good and not just a random zerg (where such tactics are pretty redundant), you’re probably going to loose 1/3rd of your group in a second and thus the battle.

Combine the two and you might get it to work

I have been thinking of starting an all one-class guild before on Piken (and since Mesmer is my main, obvious Mesmer is obvious) and just run “fun raids” a little now and then. Unfortunetly since I am a crap commander with the social skills of a sloth and the organisation skill of a moldy tomato, its never happened, lol. It would be interesting to see how it works. I mean its one class, it should be quite simple to design overall engagement tactics since you know exactly what everyone should do. Oh the melee train is rolling over us? Pop sword 2 lol.

Dawdler.8521

What if PPT decayed so things were only worth a few points for the first couple hours and worth nothing after that? If you wanted more, you’d have to attack something new or defend something for the defender events etc.

Unless you revamp defense ticks scoring, that’s not going to work at all because a vastly superior server will simply cap a keep, have it for the ppt duration, then abandon it and let it be taken by the enemy. Open the doors, sort of speak. When that’s done, they just cap it again with ease and rake in the ppt.

This is already happening in a way for karma trains. 60 people roll in and take your garrison, you take it back with 6 people wondering where the kitten those 60 went, the second the timer goes out they are of course back for XP/karma/loot because they know you cant defend against them. Of course this isnt done for ppt, just personal score. Still, the point is that players exploit everything.

Anyway, here’s another idea:

Fixed points per keep based on how well its been “supplied”. Each dolly arriving to a tower, give it more “worth”. Each defense tick (assuming players are in the keep) take away “worth”. For example:

A keep is worth 10 points to whoever cap it. A dolly come and deliver 50 supply or whatever they load up with. The keep is now worth 15 points to whoever cap it. Etc and so on. Each defense tick (5 mins?) remove 5 points. Each upgrade tier add 10 points to its worth, but also give half of those points to the server for upgrading it (sort of like a “we gave you 5 points that its up to you to defend or the enemy take the points away!”). If the keep is capped, its worth is obviously reset and the process repeats.

Its exactly equal conditions for both day and night shift. The more you defend a higher tier keep, the more points you get out of it in the end.

So many simple ideas… So never going to see any improvement at all to WvW scoring.

Mesmers and Stealth

Dawdler.8521

But let’s look at other professions. I have seen Zerker warriors striking just a few hits with insane ammount of dmg, leaping far away and bloking until those skills are out of cooldown and try again. The only difference here is, that this behaviour is not only predictable but it is visually forseeable.

Yes. That’s known as fun counter-play between brawlers. They hit, you dodge/block, you hit, they dodge/block, etc and so on. Stealth completely bypass this. There is no real counter-play to stealth. Yeah, so you can pop stun breaks after they hit you but that’s countering something after the fact it occured (such as Theives taking 6K HP off 3K armor targets in a second). If this is all that happen during a fight… its not counter-play. Its damage control until you die. Because your opponent is invisible.

And just as a sidenote, yes I do play a PU Mesmer.

Told you its better to join ’em.

Yes. Your point?

A Thief can deal more damage in 1s coming out of stealth.

Look, its real easy: PU Mesmers and perma-stealth Theives are arguably the most annoying and stupidly OP roaming builds there is on two of the strongest pvp classes the game have. They can both engage and run away pretty much at will. Sure a Warrior can fly away like his bloody kitten is on fire when comboing certain weapons, but against a decent Mesmer or Thief that’s pretty much all they got.

You dont fight them.

You join them.

Night capping - final solution

Dawdler.8521

Why do people insist on saying that its “unfair” to balance score by population, they are people playing the same game you are and are just as much worth as primetime peeps!

Well duh.

That’s why all keeps capped without opposition should reward less points towards the server score. This has to do with the points the server get. Not what players get. They would still get the same kitten gold award and the same kitten karma and silver.

It doesnt matter if 20 people cap a keep defended by 3 people in under 1 minute in the middle of the bloody night or if 50 people cap a keep defended by 10 people in under 2 minutes in the middle of primetime. Both scenarios should consider the capping server to have taken a keep without much opposition.

We really need some way to balance individual capping score based on tier and forces.

I’ve suggested removal of ppt before, but here is another incredibly simple idea:

Local outmanned buff keep affecting NPCs too. If a keep is contested and the keeplord from contest to death has been outmanned… The keep is worthless for ppt during say 10-20 ticks or something. It dont count, period. If recapped, the same rule is applied and tested. You capped it unopposed or with very little opposition. You still get all the loot, all the player score and can upgrade it to T3 at will to prevent the enemy from retaking it if you want. It just wont begin to count as a scored keep until hours later.

It could even result in really interesting combo effects: You throw a fire bolt at your ally, he uses shield block and the bolt burst into a explosion of fire away from the ally. Or he could load his shield with the fire and unload it. Also, you should be able to do combos in enemy fields.

You miss the obvious scenario where you ally forget to block, burst into flame, runs around screaming and flailing his arms, setting every other ally around him on fire, they run around flailing their arms too and start setting the entire keep on fire, then all the allies that remain are trapped inside the burning keep because there is a pile of burning corpses by the door.

But the farming is expected. I have absolutely no idea why they do that since the proven tactic against RG style melee trains is to scatter and circle. Oh and moaing Sacrx.

The problem here is that veil is used just before you assault an enemy zerg. They wouldnt run into it. PU is great for stacking when you smash into their lines but the confusion? Pretty worthless. IMO all glamour confusion is meh. Look good in theory, works poor in practice. Much better to spec for burst damage – an enemy zerg should be wiped before your veil has even come out of cd, meaning in addition to it being used pretty far from the zerg you generally wont be using it again. Long cooldown for something of that use.

+ Traveller runes
= perma 25% without having to pop your heal at inappropriate times

Swiftness may offer more speed but it only works in theory. In practice, its great when running randomly (though you do get tired of it) and fail as soon as you enter combat.

You could go with cheaper Speed runes as well (one of those traveller runes will pay for that), however what they give is really meh aside from the 25%. Traveller runes are pretty much omni runes, any build has decent use of the stats.

Either way they are well worth it and a quality of life improvement beyond anything the Mesmer can get.

Well you have a problem there. How does the game know what fights are “fair”?

If team A is outmanned but team B consist of kittens running around doing mostly nothing while a guild group from team B captures a keep from team A after a fantastic and lengthy battle… Does team B get nothing because team A was outmanned?

Nah, tbh its still really, really simple, because there is only one way.

Get rid of PPT.

New scoring system (incredibly simplistic idea with random numbers):

- Capturing a T1 keep = 10 points, T2 = 20 points, T3 = 30 points. Garrison/bay/hills/EB border keeps add +10 points, SM add +50 points.
- Every defense tick of a keep give the defenders +10 points but at the same time add + 10 points to the objective when it is captured (up to a limit of say +100 points.

The end.

Meaning, a scenario such as the following:

Team A (night shift) cap a wooden keep quickly, unopposed.
Team B (primetime) retake the now T3 ugraded keep after a battle and 3 defense ticks.

Score results: Team A capping that wooden keep during the night shift get 40 points (10 points for the cap, 30 points for defense). Team B capping the same T3 keep during primetime get 60 points for the cap

Dawdler.8521

Well that’s the tradeoff. Mesmer 1v1 and ZvZ skills are pretty different. If you want something that is “decent” at both and still use the torch, I would recommend this:

- X/20/30/X/X (personally I use 0/20/30/20/0 for added survivability).
- sword/torch/staff. The staff give you extra tricks/defense in group combat and you can trait it, but of course its a tradeoff for damage vs the GS. Missing knockback is a shame too.
- Aim for 3K armor and go for a full power/prec/critdam build. You should easily reach 40%/60%@2K toughness by comboing knights/cavalier/pvt/berserker.
- blink/null field/feedback/timewarp
- use HP on kill/endurance on kill sigils
- I recommend traveller runes regardless of build

You dont want to be caught alone inside a zerg and under the enemy melee train, but the staff combined with with blink and torch should allow you to evade and slip back into your own melee train range.

I used such a build against INC yesterday in open field GvG – we beat the snot out of them despite less/equal numbers, lol. Then Red Guard came and interfered
Its not a roflstomp dps build but got the torch and provide what you need in a group (well, except veil, got more mesmers for that) while still offering high survivability.

When roaming and going solo the things I change is feedback->decoy, timewarp->mass invisi and sigils to 2xdoom and perception (the later also used to stack, heh).

The only other thing that can do both fairly well is the shatter build, but you obviously tried that… Phantasm builds are strong in 1v1 and decent at group fights but tbh not so great at actual roaming. You pretty much commit to battle and die when outnumbered. Reflection builds are poor in 1v1 but decent at group fights. Still same problem as phantasm though, poor roamers.

You may ask why I recommend direct damage too and here’s the deal – I personally find condition damage downright boring in the long run. You dont have the oomph of direct damage builds and even they are weaker than usual when speccing for group combat.

Well, the roamers i know (including myself) are primarily looking for outnumbered fights and zerglings to troll. We are dying a lot so it’s always good to being outnumbered.

Camps are capped and defended whenever possible but the main point is looking for good fights.

Tbh I dont think “good fights” mean dying alot while looking for outnumbered fights
I rather prefer fighting equally skilled opponents.

In terms of roaming… sword/torch/blink/decoy/mass invis PU build. Its the only real way. You basicly become a thief, ie immortal when roaming. You can troll 5 people for an extended period of time and even if you cant defeat them, you can disengage at will. You have to work really hard to die.

Its incredibly cheesy, but most roamers you meet will use their cheesy builds too
Either way you know you did good if a perma-stealth thief join your party and complain about OP PU mesmers.

Personally I slap mantra heal + restorative mantras + menders purity + traited staff on my PU build (along with traveller runes). Conditions glide off me, I am constantly running at +25% speed and jumping around like an invisible mofo in combat.

brb grabbing 20 man pugs to face map zerg, mkay

Are you saying its better to defend a tower in a 20 minute battle where you kill no attackers, they run around bringing down all your siege while swearing, half of defenders die due to wall AoE and when the door is open everyone else jump out – compared to jumping out, dying in a glorious and intense battle then retaking the keep 10 minutes later?

Siege Placement Malarkey.

Bountiful interruption seem rather pointless since you have a whooping 1 skill on a high cooldown that can interrupt (ie gs 5).

I would also use double sigil of doom to put constant poision on your target rather than getting more accuracy (70% is already insane, 65% isnt going to hurt).

Personally I would also trade precision for crit damage – you can probably get another 30% crit damage at a minor loss of precision/toughness depending on what gear you pick.

Empowered illusions I am still not sure about. I seem to recall it not affecting phantasm damage, which is where where the real damage come from. The actual damage that clones does is very minor (20-30 maybe). Someone around here will probably know it, all I know is that I prefer crippling dissipation (if phantasm build) or mental torment (if shatter).

FYI: Iron will works on walls and gates.

Considering doors can stealth yet still stand there and mock you, I doubt buffs work on them.

Before we continue any further what in your mind is the strongest 1v1 profession. Do you believe a thief brings more to a small man roaming group than guards, wars, or necros?

Define small man?

Yesterday I was raiding mostly, but many times we ran past 2 theives that we saw during the evening. They where always running together and they where always “fighting” a single player.

“fighting” being a relative term here, since it was them popping up from nowhere, stun, wham bam thank you mam in less than a second with quadrouple daggers and then they disappear again, followed by a stealth stomp, them appearing for 1 second and then they where gone again only to be seen some 30m away (for about 1 second before they where out of rendering range and/or stealthed again, hard to tell).

They seemed to be doing pretty fine in a small 2 man roaming group. I doubt they even died once. Or got hurt for that matter.

Too much damage in zergs, give me immunity!

What you need in a Commander

Meh, just fork out the dough. You’ll make those 100g back fairly quickly (you can probably look in the bank and sell stuff for 50g).

Join a border at off hours, check if there is a commander online. If not, tag up and go nuts. You dont really have to command when few are following, just do the stuff you normally do. Look at it like practice. The mind of a zerg is fairly simple. Enemy in front, kill kill kill. Something that you can capture in front, capture it.

Being a good commander is a whole different level and require lots of practice, deep knowledge of all game mechanics, teamspeak/vent and not to mention trust of players.

In the end, what I truly need from a commander – a fun time. Many people always go “boooo commander wiped, cant do anything right :<” and then they ignore him. I dont care if a commander wiped, as long as he tried. kitten I’m so tired of cowards. If an enemy zerg equal your size is in front and stacks up, dont run into a bloody tower to “defend from an advantagous position” while half the zerg dies behind you. Stack up and meet them head on.

If players dislike you for doing that, you dont want them following you anyway.
