Is this game grindier than WoW?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Demented Yak.6105

Demented Yak.6105

I played WoW for quite a while.

WoW is a lot grindier than Gw2, especially the leveling up process. The leveling up process in WoW is absolutely awful in my opinion when compared to Gw2. It’s all just kill a million bears and collect a zillion little magical orbs and stuff like that. The higher level grinds are fairly tolerable though because you get rewards that actually mean something and rewards that help you – pets, mounts, great cosmetics, nifty little objects that allow you to do useful and funny things – rockets and invisibility for any class if you level up some engineering.

Doing things like getting exalted status for some factions were just impossible for me. It just took too long doing the same dungeons/raids over and over.

Some things in WoW also depending a lot on getting lucky. I tried hundreds upon hundreds of times to get that phoenix mount from the Sunstrider raid (I forget what it’s called) and I never actually got it in the end even though it’s supposed to be sort of easy to get compared to some other raid rewards. It was absolutely excruciating and all for nothing. It was also extremely easy which made it all the more boring. Whenever soloing any content, I really just pressed ‘starfall’ on my druid and watched everything in sight die instantly.

Gw2 also feels a lot less grindy to me because the combat is so much more dynamic. In WoW I’d really just stand in one spot on my moonkin using very predictable and simple rotations because you can’t move whilst casting spells. This is why very specific specialisations absolutely dominated in PvP – I’m thinking of feral druids who (as I remember it) had probably the best mobility. There was a much larger gap between the best and worst classes in both PvP and PvE.

Ultimately, I just played WoW less and less once I discovered Gw2 until it just wasn’t worth paying the monthly fee. Gw2 is much, much less of a grind than WoW. Gw2 is one of the least grindy games I’ve ever played. WoW is still a great game though; it’d definitely be one of my first thoughts if I stopped playing Gw2.

What set of rune for my armor?

in Revenant

Demented Yak.6105

Hoelbrak runes are probably the best in your situation (about 8g each last time I checked). Power, might duration and -20% condition duration which is extremely useful since revenants have very little condition removal.

Strength would be better if you had more money (14g each last time I checked). Rage would be very cheap (less than 1g each) but you don’t really have enough power or precision for them to be worthwhile.

There are, however, a lot of new runes. I’m personally considering scrapper runes (175 power, 100 toughness and 7% damage reduction within 600 range). So, check those ones out too if you’re interested. The prices for these new runes will probably change a lot quite soon though.

Newsflash hammer wielding Heralds > DH

Demented Yak.6105

Stop being newbs. I mean seriously l2p. DH are traps. Range them down and they die. Blow the traps with a pet or clone and don’t stand in it and they die. Rev built for DPS CAN NOT take a condi burst. They simply do not have the clearing for it. Not by a long shot. Hammer 1 is slow, clunky, and usually its the might stack that kills you. Think of Pew Pew ranger how do you counter them?

There will always be some build you all think is OP. How OP it is is not based on how hard it is for you to handle it but based on the skills you and your team have available to do so. DD ele was such a pain because it could handle most things that should counter it. The ones you mention now are susceptible to some hard counters. So it becomes the same old thing. Are you willing to counter it or wait for a nerf and a new target to complain about?

Often you guys get advice in these threads. Ignore it and continue the moan train all the while someone else went into the game applied it and started winning. The pattern is the same over and over yet most of you are still in the same spot doing the same thing and still can’t adapt. You have played enough pvp to get the title but truth is most of you are the same kitten guys you were 3 years ago with 0 growth. There will always be a meta start learning to adapt to it because the next nerf will not be the last. The game is constantly changing and you will never be satisfied because you never learn. go on beg for your nerfs and watch a new meta pop and another reason to type angrily into the key board.

You are my hero.

Demented Yak.6105

Is there already a “meta” build out on metabattle?

Ugh.

Ok. Basic tips:

Shield 5, sword 3, staff 3, staff 5 or hammer 3 when someone tries to burst. Try to balance the need for evades with the need for damage. Sword 3, staff 5 and hammer 3 do very decent damage but try and find a time to use them for both the evade and the damage rather than just one or the other.

Glint utilities reveal when theives, mesmer and engis go in to stealth. Don’t reveal them if you’re currently losing. Use that time to heal up and even the playing field. Reveal is for maintaining your offensive momentum, not for just annoying people and forcing them to destroy you.

Stack up boons with facets of strength, darkness and nature both before and during a fight and then use UA, CoR and staff 5 when your opponent is out of heals since they are your highest damaging attacks.

Impossible odds + sword auto to prompt their heals.

Phase traversal to catch someone.

Shield 5, infuse light if you’re about to die.

Try to use infuse light rather than shield 5 if you have conditions on you.

Interrupt slow casts with jade winds, glint elite, hammer 5 or staff 5. You should always have a cc handy.

Use shield 4 whenever you get a chance where you have enough energy and time.

When using infuse light, let them do the work. Stand still or stand in an aoe but make sure you get out half a second before your invulnerability ends. There may be an impulse to dodge or move around; try to quash it until the very last second. If your opponent is smart and moves away from you then follow him and force him to use some damaging cc or something – just make sure you have a stunbreak ready to go.

Do not rule out using the glint elite passive effect if you’re in a pinch. A lot of people seem to have done that.

Disengage from a fight by using a combination of dodging, riposting shadows and impossible odds.

Impossible odds is very useful for stomping someone, especially if they interrupt you. Do not bother trying to stomp on other revs. Unless you’ve broken their spirit and their will to fight, just kill them the old fashioned way. It’ll probably end up being faster.

Have fun.

I would, however, discourage you from buying the expansion JUST for the revenant. If you don’t want to play with the new maps and raids and other features and it turns out you don’t like the rev, your money is completely wasted.

Are you sure you weren’t hitting multiple opponents?

The absolute maximum that I can seem to get is 8000-9000.

Are you including things like food, banners and other team boosts and infusions and stuff? Any idea on the specific build required to do this?

All modifiers in Invocation, Herald, and Corruption in PvP with both classes being in zerker(and the victim being in Light armor) with Scholar runes, some Might stacking, several conditions(+Resistance), several boons and activating Cruel Repercussions, Unrelenting Assault(I actually used Devastation over Invocation for this one) did well over 20k and CoR on Hammer did well above 15k.

If you somehow manage to do this in an actual fight though, I think you deserve the kills.

Did you mean devastation rather than corruption? Also I don’t think conditions count since those don’t contribute to the damage of UA/CoR. Also, for UA, you can’t activate cruel repercussions for each of the 7 hits.

Otherwise, yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. I think I’ll do the maths sometime later to be sure.

You’re complaining on a very vague level. What specifically do you think is the problem and how do you think they should fix it? If you can’t answer that, your opinion should be completely discarded.

I think revenant is fine. The chronomancer, reaper, dh and scrapper are also fine. How is anyone having trouble with any of these professions? The problems they create are so incredibly easy to solve by just reading about what their attacks actually do.

Demented Yak.6105

I don’t think that DH should be nerfed. I do not play DH. I play rev, staff ele and engi.

The amount of people who have just started playing guardian now though is absolutely ridiculous. In conquest there are always now at least 4 guardians in every game, sometimes 3 on a team which should normally be fairly rare rather than every second game.

I don’t like seeing things nerfed usually, but I just hate how everyone has suddenly become a guardian main and I’m perma-trapped on a point in conquest.

The more people who jump on the bandwagon, the more other professions are going to QQ.

I am not a mesmer main. I have defeated lots of chronomancers. Lots of chronomancers have also defeated me. I have used the chronomancer a little bit. I will not use it again because I am a kitten poor mesmer. That should qualify my opinion as unbiased, I think.

I don’t really think any specs need to be nerfed. I’m going to take another few weeks to decide.

AOE and burst combos with rev?

in Revenant

Posted by: Demented Yak.6105

Demented Yak.6105

Hmm that’s a little disappointing looking at the rev skill set there is so many evades and blocks and reflects built in that I felt it would have a really high skill cap and be incredible when mastered… But it sounds like all I have to do is jump on a guy activate the super speed and auto attack away… Meh.

The difference, I think, between the revenant and all the other professions in this respect is that the level of skill used scales very disproportionately to your opponent and the revenant is a very reactive as opposed to a proactive profession. Against a good player, the level of skill required to operate the rev is enormous whereas the level of skill required to defeat a mediocre or poor player or low level npc is next to none.

For example, you play against a highly skilled necromancer (any profession will do for the sake of argument). The level of skill required for you to defeat the necro is extremely high compared to the level of skill required for him to defeat you. If, however, you’re playing against a very poor necromancer, all you’ll really have to do is use that very simple rotation I mentioned before and you win.

So what I’m saying is: for other professions, your individual skill determines how you play. For the revenant, it’s your opponents skill which determines how you play. So, if you want to play with the rev and you want it to be complex, you need to fight something/someone difficult.

Hope that makes sense.

AOE and burst combos with rev?

in Revenant

Posted by: Demented Yak.6105

Demented Yak.6105

The most basic burst skills that are incredibly easy to master use the sword and Shiro.

Just activate impossible odds and auto attack then switch legends when you’re out of energy and use unrelenting assault along with either the facet of elements active or unyielding anguish.

One aoe combo I like using is unyielding anguish and then sword 2 + hammer 3 or 5 for some nice life stealing and an aoe blind (and knockdown if you use hammer 5). This normally doesn’t work very well in PvP but it’s good enough for PvE and leveling up.

Revenant dps rotation - too simple?

in Revenant

Posted by: Demented Yak.6105

Demented Yak.6105

In theory, yes, it’s incredibly simple. You activate impossible odds and autoattack until death. Unfortunately, in these scenarios you often have an opponent.

If you were to activate impossible odds at let’s say 75% health against 1 opponent: first you lose 10 energy from the activation and then lose 5 per second until you’re out or you turn it off. In my experience, if your opponent blocks you, uses some cc or has you in multiple aoes (especially ones that apply conditions), you’re screwed. If any of those things are done effectively, that’s it – you’re pretty much done against anyone with a brain.

So ultimately, while this strategy may be simple, it’s quite hard to figure out when to apply it effectively in which case your rotation will become a lot more complex.

I won’t go in to what happens when you’re playing against multiple opponents. Anything could happen really.

I won’t go in to PvE because lol. I’ll get back to you once raids are up and running.

Everyone needs to take their time and learn about all the elite specs and how do counter them because yes, they can be countered. There’s no sense in competing to see who can shout: “OP” the loudest right off the bat. Take at least a week.
