…Magic can neither be destroyed or created…
Just thought I’d add in a little something interesting here. In the Asura storyline, as you’re meeting the Order mentors (for the first time I believe), you’re meant to have watched an Asura give a presentation, saying he could prove that the Elder Dragons are actually consuming the world’s magic, and that given enough time, the magic supply would actually dry out.
We actually know he’s wrong because dragons leak back magic while sleeping and also seem to leak back magic when killed.
But, tragically, he was murdered before he could give the presentation.
He’s not actually. He only seems to be killed. He later finds employment with the pact.
I don’t like removing content, even if it gets replaced with new content. I also don’t like new players not being able to do content that other players have experienced.
However, I do like the idea of seeing the effects of Trahearne’s and the pact’s work. The only way I can see that happening is if we get to play in a part of Orr that was unplayable before, such as the area near Scavenger’s Causeway, which would then show a cleansed or partially cleansed Orr.
Are majority of the HoT content designed for level 80s?
Yes.
Should you finish the PS first before continuing?
HoT takes place after Season 2, which takes place after Season 1, which takes place after the PS so it would be advisable to have done that content on at least 1 character before starting HoT. However, it is not required.
You were being referred to as Pact Commander in LS2, maybe you can join the pact without officially being a member of the pact? But doesn’t that make you a mercenary?
Why exactly would that make you a mercenary? If you are still a Durmand Priory researcher, just temporarily working for the pact, then you are just that, a researcher.
So I’m guessing revenant characters will have a separate leveling area.
No, they will have the same story and levelup experience as all other professions.
We are probably going to become the Supreme Pact God Emperor of the Orders eventually
I don’t think so. First, because I think Thrahearne will continue to be in that position. Second, because the player can’t have too many responsibilities in an organization because that would interfere with his adventuring and dragon-killing. Hmm, you’re kidding aren’t you?
Normal Virtue traits vs Dragonhunter Virtues
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I think this feedback would be better in the guardian subforum. Regardless, I think that what you describe was unintended behavior. I think Anet intends for old virtue traits to work with the new virtues.
On a 1.) thing. no I don’t think so….but when the pale tree gives him caladbolg. she says “this sword was given to a beloved son once, and now I give it to you”….but if he’s a firstborn, who was the other son? -chinrub-
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Riannoc
There is an entire sylvari story line dealing with him.
We know this is something Anet wants to do but we also have confirmation that it won’t be coming with HoT.
What kind of annoys me about the way Anet is handling it is that they are saying: We want to implement a complete version of this feature, and we are not happy until we get it right. I’d rather have a limited version right now, to be honest. With a limited version I mean: A version which saves our specialization choices, trait choices and healing/utility/elite skill choices but which doesn’t save our equipment.
well, as I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere – with the pact broken by mordremoth, it’s not impossible that we’ll see them revert back into the orders.
The pact can’t revert back into the orders because the pact is not the combination of the three orders. The pact is completely seperate from the orders. The orders give some of their resources (such as research and units) to the pact but the orders continued to exist alongside the pact.
There was actually a discussion in one of the CDI’s on making the orders more relevant later on in the game, for example through daily quests and/or through reputation grind. Whether or not something along those lines ever makes it into the game is something only Anet knows.
Even though your typing and formatting is pretty awful, I completely agree.
I was expecting elite specs to feel like sub-professions with a more focused and specialized playstyle. They don’t seem to be doing this. They seem to be doing the opposite where the base profession is just enhanced.
I would prefer to see more drastic changes and a less generic playstyle for each elite spec. If you don’t like that playstyle, well then, it’s a good thing you can still play the base profession.
Not gonna lie, I’m a little annoyed that they chose to go this route. I’ll use them, but it’s not what I wanted or expected.
Elite Specialization was always meant to expand the class and evolve them without being an upgrade. You get a new play style with Reaper. Which is why all elite specs get their own icons. Guardian Virtues change as well the way its played.
all two hander elite specs get changed mechanics and 1hander elite specs get mechanic additions.
so Thief Elite specialization gets changes to steal into something new. Engineer gets changes to toolbelt. Ranger gets new mechanics.
Warrior gets new edition to mechanics.
I know what they are supposed to be. I don’t think they are. They do feel like an upgrade to me, not an evolution. That’s what I’m saying. Reaper feels a bit like an evolution. The others pretty much are flat upgrades at this point. Maybe other elite specs will change this, but I can’t imagine using just the base specs after HoT releases except on Necro if you want your DS instead of Reaper Shroud.
Funny considering many people seem to be saying that they won’t be playing Dragonhunter and Tempest. Reapers are popular for how they look and how they play but not for how well they perform. Chronomancer seems to be the only one people consider to be competitive.
Elite specs meant to change class mechanics?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I think the logic is as follows: If the elite spec gives a two-handed weapon, the mechanics change (i.e. Reaper and Dragonhunter). If the elite spec gives an off-hand weapon, it recieves additional mechanics (i.e. Herald, Tempest and Chronomancer).
Funny thing is both ranger and engineers were discosed during the first trailer…absurd!
The druid was actually disclosed in the announcement speech, being used as the primary example of the elite specialization system.
Maybe the elite specializations for the medium professions are the most awesome and complex and thus require the most effort and time to develop.
In all seriousness though, Anet has said features are shown when those features are far enough along to be shown completely. Whether that is the only reason why the medium professions are last or not is something that none of us can say for sure of course.
I would love sword off-hand, but the reason Thiefs will probably never get this is because of the possible main-hand dagger/off-hand sword combination, since it would look really odd auto-attacking enemies with a small dagger while you drag a sword behind you in your off-hand.
not really. it’s not uncommon in history to have a short/long sword combo, with the short sword used to batter down an enemy’s defences while the long sword is used to deliver the finishing blow.
First of all, usually that is a long sword / dagger combo, not a long sword / short sword combo. Second of all, the long sword is then always used in the main-hand, not in the off-hand.
I really despise all the pirate themed thief equipment in game. If thief specialization incorporates anything pirate, I am outta here!
So things you can ignore but are enjoyed by other players are enough to make you leave? Many of us will have elite specializations that we will never touch, especially if in the future each profession has 3 or more elite specializations. That shouldn’t offend anyone. It’s embracing diversity in playstyles and character themes.
What I personally want more than anything is something close to Mass Effect’s codex. That gives lore hounds something to strive for (collecting all codex entries) and at the same time can provide them with additional lore (both about big things and about little things).
What’s more likely is that they’ll release it unfinished and patch it later, or delay further.
All games these days are released unfinished, that’s why pretty much all games have day-1 patches. This is doubly so for mmos which are never ‘done’. The question is, is it finished enough to be playable and enjoyable? From what I’ve played so far, that answer is yes. But everybody will give one’s own answer to that question.
This won’t happen. Firstly because Anet has stated that elite specializations are the way in which our character options will be expanded in the future. Secondly because the increase in skills and especially the increase in possible skill combinations was a big problem for both balance (i.e. some options were clearly better than other options) and power creep (i.e. characters later in the game’s life were significantly stronger than characters earlier in the game’s life) in GW1 and Anet has been quite explicit in not wanting to repeat those mistakes.
Dueling will exist in guild halls and already exists in 1v1 pvp servers. This topic is pointless. There is no need for duels elsewhere. Period.
If there would be no need, people would not be asking for this. Apparently, to them it makes a big difference whether one duels in pvp servers, in wvw or in guild halls on the one hand and in the open pve world on the other hand.
People ask for a lot of things that are not needed.
Granted. However, they feel there is a need. Other feel there isn’t. Who can objectively judge who is right? Especially in a game like GW2 which doesn’t include features for one specific group only but which tries to be pretty all-inclusive in what you can do in the game.
Oh yea it will for sure be staff with a name probably like the monk.
Probably not, since the term ‘monk’ was used for a GW1 profession which was nothing like a melee staff-wielding fighting monk but which could best be described as a priest, i.e. a light armor-wearing healing/holy-magic using profession.
Dueling will exist in guild halls and already exists in 1v1 pvp servers. This topic is pointless. There is no need for duels elsewhere. Period.

So we’ve just had BWE balancing on specializations that are currently available. So what happens to those that are yet to be revealed and may not make an appearance until the last BWE? Do these not get tested, or balanced after said event?
It’s not like balancing stops after HoT is released. Though I can understand the worry.
Repeat after me: They will be released when Anet is ready to release them.
This is not precisely true.
They will be released when they are ABLE to. All signs are the remaining Elite Specs aren’t complete enough yet to show publicly. You can bet good money they aren’t sitting on finished, high octane fuel for the hype train and not using it when they’ve had high visibility events like Gamescon just begging to be exploited. Letting that show go by with nothing new to tickle the vast majority of established players and prospective players who just don’t see GW2 as a e-sport powerhouse was not something they did by choice. And when the highlight of a week is telling us, ‘hey, there’s a big con coming and we’ll announce some stuff there (DUH)‘, you’re looking at a warchest they’ve emptied of good talking points.
That’s partially what I meant with being released when Anet is ready to release them. Partially it has to do with the development of the elite specs. However, another part, without a doubt is marketing (i.e. the spreading out of information to maintain some level of interest). These combined determine when and how information is revealed.
I’m guessing rifle thief is something we’ll see at some point. How it is implemented and how long we will have to wait for it remains to be seen.
Regardless, this is not actually a HoT-related topic since the first elite specialization is already being developed (and it appears not to be a rifle thief) so a rifle thief would be coming at some point after HoT.
Talk to Ela Makkay in Lion’s Arch near the Durmand Priory Research Site for a recap.
That’s only season 1 though and it’s quite limited at that.

I know there are also fan videos on youtube.
I’d be somewhat surprised if it’d be this year at all.
It could be, of course, but given how much is known about the expansion so far I wouldn’t assume it.
They have said it will be released in 2015, quite recently as well. They didn’t just say that they aim to release it in 2015 but that they will actually release it in 2015. Of course things could always turn out in such a way that it will not release in 2015, but I doubt it.
The other question is, did the gods even know of the EDs existence. They seemed to be drawn to Arah, but just because it was a place of great magic, or did they know about Zhaitan.
There is alot of discussion about that. To me it seems like the gods did not know of the ED’s existence. There is some suspicion that Abaddon knew about the dragons however and that this knowledge was the origin of the conflict between him and the other gods, as you said.
I’d disagree there. Both the non-human races that we saw worship them were survivors of the last rise, the premise of Arah explorable is that the Gods stockpiled and studied relics from the last dragon rise, and with S2 we’ve learned that the most comprehensive source the Priory has on the dragons is the Scroll/Tome of the Five True Gods. Whether they knew they were actually on top of one is another matter, and I believe a dev statement before launch said they didn’t know they tapped into Zhaitan while fooling around with the Bloodstone, but we do know they knew the dragons existed.
I should’ve been more precise in my response. It is questionable whether the gods knew if the dragons were still around and whether the gods knew if the dragons would wake up again (and when) and whether the gods knew just how powerful the dragons are.
Tengu, tengu story, tengu leveling zones, tengu city.
Repeat after me: They will be released when Anet is ready to release them.
which is some what hypocritical considering he used undead himself in his armies later on
There is some suspicion that Dhuum’s undead (which are in the underworld) are actually different from other undead (which are on tyria).
Now my question is, would Dhuum have been be able to deny Zhaitan his Risen minions if he was still the god in charge of the Underworld instead of Grenth?
I would say no, based on this: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cathedral_of_Silence_%28story%29
If so, there are however 2 other questions coming up:
1. Why doesn’t Grenth do anything against the Risen? Is it because he like the other gods decided to not intervene in Tyria anymore or is there more behind it?
2. When Dhuum “forbid” the undead, there were actually Risen on Tyria, like the Giganticus Lupicus, probably in some kind of hibernation like the Great Destroyer and the Drakkar Beast were. Why didn’t he hunt them down? There they hidden from him?
1. There are two theories. One is that the gods do not intervene in Tyria anymore, either because they abandoned it or because they want to give the races the chance to grow up without the hand of a parent. The other is that the gods fear the dragons.
2. You seem to imply that the gods and the dragons were contemporaries during the last rise of the dragons. All evidence points towards the gods arriving after the dragons already went to sleep. I read what you wrote wrong.
Can Zhaitan’s magic be considered Necromancy?
No, it is dragon corruption. It is only superficially similar. It has more in common with branding than with necromancy.
That is if they are even powerful enough to overrule an Elder Dragon, but why wouldn’t they be, the Forgotten obviously could break the bond between ED and minion.
Maybe they could break the bonds between the ED and individual minions. However, again, for whatever reason, the gods do not intervene.
Abaddon was the god of secrets, so if he knew about the EDs he might not have shared that knowledge with the other gods… or did he share it with Dhuum, who enacted his ban on the undead and resurrections to prevent Zhaitan from stocking up his armies when he awakens? After all a body you just bury or cremate probably decomposes faster than someone that is resurrected over and over again. But hey that’s just a theory…. a lore theory. So share your thoughts.
Abaddon and Dhuum did have an alliance so it’s possible I guess. Nice reference to the game theorists btw.

Anet explicitly said that elite specializations are there to fill a similar role as the secondary profession system did in GW1. You can disagree with them all you like but considering they look at it like that, it seems highly unlikely that they will bring the secondary profession system (or something closer to it than the elite specialization system) back.
Furthermore, one of the reasons Anet did away with the secondary profession system was that it was too difficult too balance, especially with the introduction of more professions and skills down the line (in GW2’s terms: with the introduction of more elite specializations). This provides even more evidence that Anet will not consider it.
Will they need to be balanced? Yes absolutely.
That’s what you think. I Think the amount of resources required and the balance problems that will be caused by this will in no way be worth it.
(edited by Diovid.9506)
For the people who say no, I want to ask: How exactly would a dueling system negatively affect you (if there was an auto-decline option which was switched on initially)?
They’ve already said they’ll never do PvP in the open world as it doesn’t create for a friendly environment. It’s also been mentioned that they’ll never do it by players in all the other posts about this.
They’ve only said that they would never do nonconsensuel open world pvp. However a dueling system with an auto-decline option would not go against what they said. I wouldn’t mind such a system, although I wouldn’t use it much myself.
But I guarantee you they are not going to add another class to the game that is already so similar to one that exists. You wrote out a lot though and have clearly put a lot of thought into it, but this would sooner be an entire rework of the Mesmer class itself rather than a new class added in.
If nothing else, thematically there is just waaaaaay too much overlap between this profession and the mesmer.
Maybe at first sight.
But no!
There are huge differences between the Mesmer and the Stage-Illusionist!
You do know that multiple mesmers in GW1 literally were stage performers right? Althea and Norgu were both actors and the mesmer’s goddess Lyssa is closely related to art and deception in general and acting (which is deception and art) specifically.
Edit: I Also feel that considering we now have 3 professions per armor class and considering Anet has said they will continue to expand the existing professions through elite specializations, there is very little room and very little reason for more professions.
There is always reason and room for new classes or other kind of expansions!
Not really, no. Each addition requires recourses. Each further addition, complicates balance even more. Each further addition, has the risk of taking up the thematic or gameplay space of existing professions. And so on. As much as it might seem to be fun from a player perspective to have ever more professions, it is just not always a good idea.
If nothing else, thematically there is just waaaaaay too much overlap between this profession and the mesmer. Besides, ‘stage illusionist’ is a terrible concept for a adventuring monster-killing profession. The mesmer concept works because mesmers are both stage illusionists and so much more besides that.
Edit: I Also feel that considering we now have 3 professions per armor class and considering Anet has said they will continue to expand the existing professions through elite specializations, there is very little room and very little reason for more professions.

2.) Where is the Nightmare Court in all this? Are they under the influence of Mordremoth? Could they end up being anti-heroes of sorts if not?
There is a longstanding dispute on whether or not the nightmare is Mordremoth’s corruption. My suspicion is that the nightmare is not in fact his corruption. Like the dream sylvari, nightmare sylvari are also anti-dragon. In addition, the nighmare court is very much against the idea of others (such as Ventari’s tablet) dictating what they should do, thus they wouldn’t be supporters of Mordremoth I would imagine. Furthermore, the sylvari we’ve seen work for Mordemoth in living story seasons 1 and 2 were both soundless, not nightmare court. To me this implies that the nightmare provides the same protection as the dream against Mordremoth. Although, as we have seen, the combination of being weak willed, having a weakened pale tree and being in close proximity to the jungle can overcome that protection. I think the nightmare court will have some role to play in the expansion which will provide more definitive anwers.
1. This has been brought up by many others already.
2. The chronomancer is a good place already even without a new main-hand weapon.
3. The tempest is not the best place it could be but that is not due to lacking a new main-hand weapon.
4. The dragonhunter and reaper are not in a better place than the chronomancer.
5. Unlike the reaper and dragonhunter, the chronomancer and tempest actually have more skills available to them at the same time than their base classes. In the case of the chronomancer this is due to their F5, in the case of the tempest this is due to Overloads.
6. The tempest’s warhorn doesn’t give 2 new skills like the off-hand of most profession but 8 new skills due to attunements.
7. Giving a main hand and an off-hand to an elite specialization is actually something entirely different from giving a two-handed weapon to an elite specialization because the amount of weapon-set combinations with a main-hand and off-hand is much higher (i.e. they can be combined with eachother but also with core weapons). Thus the balance of a new main-hand + off-hand is more complex than the balance of a new two-handed weapon.
So are “maps” and “zones” the same thing? Or is one a part of the other (like Queensdale is a part of Kryta)?
When discussing GW2, the terms ‘map’ and ‘zone’ are usually used synonymously i.e. they are both used to describe an area such as Queensdale or Timberline Falls.
An area such as Kryta or Orr is referred to as a ‘region’.
No, all we know is that there will be at least 2 zones and that each zone has 3 biomes.
No. Colin said last week in the livestream, that the maps/zones will be large, but not every zone/map will have three biomes.
Yea, I’ve read that. That is new information though. Or rather new clarification.
Still, from what he said it seems to imply that there are at least 2 maps with the 3 biomes and at least 2 maps without the 3 biomes.
1. We don’t know if there are dungeons in HoT, only that there will be ‘challenging group content’.
2. They will release information on this challenging group content when they are ready to release it.
Why is everyone telling him to be patient?
Because saying “do my favorite thing first instead of the favorite thing of other people” comes across as whining.
NO to Mounts!!!!!!!!! Want mounts? Go play some of the many other games with mounts in them
or go play GW1 and find a wurm in Nightfall. GAME ON
How can you say NO to mounts just like that, many people would like mounts.
I don’t like jumping puzzles or flying gliding jump pads, or whatever it is, doesn’t mean I just say NO to them, many people enjoy them.
Ans “Go play something else”, really you said that.
It’s not as simple as “some people enjoy it so why not let them and just not use them yourself?”. For example, there are fears that mounts trivialize the game world, even more than waypoints already do. Furthermore, there are fears that mounts will clutter the screen (in combat, in cities, near npcs and so on). There are also fears that mounts tend to be too… extravagent (although weapons like the Dreamer already have this problem). There might well be other reasonable arguments against mounts.
If Anet adds mounts then they have to deal with those issues. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s not that easy either.
Am I the only one feeling that mastery progression is way too grindy?
For something that is account-bound and meant to be our post-80 progression? No, not really.
i mean its understandable that it needs to be hard and should take time, but it just doesnt make sense to me how killing mobs and doing pact events will make me a better glider.
Welcome to gaming? I mean in GW2 (like in most xp-based games) it’s already the case that getting xp for whatever (hitting a foe with a sword, rezzing an ally, viewing a vista, completing a heart by collecting apples etcetc) makes you better in all regards. How is this any different?
If you could use the new weapons (or the new utilities) without equiping the new trait line then the number of combinations of skills will grow exponentially with every new elite specialization. That was (at least part of) the reason for the balance issues with GW1 according to Anet so… it’s quite likely that it will be final.
1. We don’t know.
2. We don’t know.
Reference: It is difficult to provide a reference for the absence of statements.
Since legends are kinda sorta but not completely tied to specializations and weapon sets, and since we have all core specializations and core weapon sets, we know there won’t be another core legend. As others have said, it is likely that Glint will be the elite specialization’s legend.
From what I remember reading, and I could be wrong, they were going to have three completely different zones, and each zone is going to have those three biomes, or levels. In essence, that’s effectively 9 maps if I am remembering correctly.
Verdant brink we are getting only 25% of the map, and it’s a convoluted, twisted maze on just that 25%.
I do think therefore, that we will be getting quite a bit of real estate. Could I be wrong? Sure! I can’t prove a thing I’ve typed. I’m just going by recollection of what I think I remember reading.
But I suspect that, while the horizontal land area won’t be huge, we will have a ton of vertical area.
EDIT: on the other hand, it could be that they just meant three maps, not three zones, and each biome is one map. If so, that’s three maps. Still, between the horizontal size of each map and its maze-like design, I think it will be pretty substantially interesting, at least for a time.
Seriously… Where are people pulling these numbers from?! Anet has not given any numbers concerning zones. All we know is that there are multiple zones (i.e. at least 2) and that each zone has 3 biomes.
If it’s 3 zones the size of verdant brink with those layers that’s already twice the size of the average wow expansion…
Did you actually play BC or WotLK?
Yes i did, did you play the new map already? The 25% of that map has already more content then one of the zones in those expansions.
The last stress test looked like a lot more than 25% of Verdant Brink…and I’m pretty sure I did most of what was available in the short time that test allowed.
25% is what they told us and considering we haven’t seen the underground/root biome, that might be correct.
The reward for beta testing is that the end product ends up better.
This. In addition, it gives you an early opportunity to enjoy new features (revenant, elite specs, masteries) and new content. I’m amazed there are people who demand/expect anything more than that.
NO one paid 10 bucks for the expansion… how do you come up with this stuff?
Using math of the “1 + 1 = 11” kind:
- Newbies could buy the base game for $40 from 3rd party vendors.
- Alternatively for $50, they can buy the expac, which includes the base game.
- $50 – $40 = $10 for the expac, or so goes the math.
That could be a fair interpretation if ANet were still selling the base game for $40. Instead, ANet only offers the expac, which costs $50 and includes the base game.
Not only that but before opening up pre-purchases, GW2 had been on sale multiple times for 10 dollars.
In addition, Anet themselves argue that the expansion is 50 dollars and that the base game is given for free and that the expansion would’ve been 50 dollars even if the base game wasn’t included (of course not everyone believes Anet but that is the official statement regardless).
I’m pretty sure that’s verdant brink. Grune = green (i.e. verdant) and schewelle means something like threshold (i.e. brink).
Besides, we know we will not see anything besides Verdant Brink (and not even the entirety of that map) in betas:
we’ll only ever be showing the first story chapter and parts of the first map of the expansion during beta weekends to ensure that an entire world of discovery and excitement awaits you on launch day when you venture deeper into the jungle.
