To be quite honest, the first thought I had when I saw the picture was “Rytlock is going full Illidan”.

Many of illidan’s warcraft III quotes would totally fit Rytlock:

“I’m blind, not deaf.”
“I grow impatient”
“You dare speak to me?”
“Is that all?”
“Die, fool.”
“None may challenge me!”

New info on the human gods

in Lore

Diovid.9506

The library underneath the priory is of course a wealth of new information (and redcons). But one of the most important things I feel, was what the library had to say about the human gods. It implies something that we already suspected, that the human gods are not really gods, but just really powerful humans. It implies that they did bring humans to Tyria, and that they used the bloodstones to hide magic from the Elder Dragons. But it also implies that given enough power, any human could grow to their level of power and become a god (like Kormir).

I think you should not see the book as proof of anything. It is an Asura’s point of view towards the human gods. It may be right but it could also be a consequence of racial bias. Anet loves playing with the fact that different groups can look at the same events or the same beings in very different ways, where it is unclear which group is right.

I also noticed a rather striking similarity between Abaddon’s proverb “Act with magic, act within reason, act without mercy”, and Ventari’s words: “Act with wisdom, but act”. Is there a connection here?

Seems like you’re grasping at straws here. The similarity is very superficial. Ventari says nothing about magic and would not say anything about acting without mercy. Though both call for action, they do so in very different ways.

- Belinda is now possessing her sword and Majory is wielding it. How often have I seen that? I hope something cool comes out of it. There are so many oportunies here. Please let it be cheesy, like her being able to summon Belinda for some special attack action or something.

I hope I’m not the only one that got Ritualist-y vibes from that whole scene.

GS+Necro=Ritualist, confirmed! =P

To add to this, Marjory (and her family) are of Canthan descent. In addition, there is that story about Marjory and the ghost boy.

What I hope happens: Marjory learns how to combine ritualist and necromancer abilities and then teaches us how to do that.

What I think happens: At some point in the story Marjory finds herself in a situation where she needs extra strength (either offensive or defensive) and Belinda does a thing.

Step 2: Give this scythe as a weapon option to the Guardian.
Step 3: Create a heavy armor set that looks like a robe (complete with a hood, of course) with metal plates underneath it.

Done.

Sorry, I just don’t see a lot of room for the dervish, neither lore-wise nor gameplay-wise.

It’s possible that the high magic levels probably empowered the Elder Dragons just as much as it would the mortals.

Which is of course the primary difference between the current situation and the situation of the previous rise. In the current situation a lot of the capabilities of the races comes from technology (whether that’s steam tech, clockwork, sonic tech, magictech, even plant tech), instead of (or in addition to) magic.

Maybe that was the reason of the 5 all along, to weaken magic so that the mortal races would become less dependend on it and would develop other capabilities, while Abaddon remained convinced that only magic provided the means to overcome the dragons. I’m just thinking out loud here.

New Storyline?

I think this something like the 10th thread about this subject in the lore subforum alone.

The update on september 9 did several things:

1. It made it so that every 10 levels one completes multiple related story steps.
2. It removed the greatest fear storyline (the one with Apatia / Tonn / Syska)
3. It changed the order of Orr story steps around (this last change is no doubt related to the 1st change).

There is a lot wrong with these changes. Especially since Anet did not change dialogues. However, so far Anet has not adequately responded to the problem.

There’s been a lot of speculation about the idea that the Mursaat city might be hidden with magic. They are called the Unseen Ones after all. Maybe the whole city is cloaked, and right underneath our noses?

Under our noses… getting on the ground in Rata Sum sends you to prison… Rata Sum is an anagram of Mursaat…

…I smell a conspiracy!

Wait wha…

* mind is blown *

Prepare for more mind blownage:

Rata Sum (pronounced rahta soom) is the capital city of the asura and is in the form of a giant, floating cube. When the Great Destroyer drove them from their homes in the Depths of Tyria 250 years ago, they arrived at the ruins of some previous civilization, setting up geomystical generators for power within these already fortified confines and establishing the area as their new capital.

Anything other than a Charr vs Human war would not fit the lore.

Unless by that time cultural change of Charr and Humans, combined with political, technological and economical interdependencies reduces their willingness to go to war (as happened in Europe after the 2nd World War).

The Asura go back underground (but keep their surface holdings).

Perhaps or perhaps they realize that they can profit a lot more from trade and technological exchange with the other nations and thus stick to the surface.

The Sylvari go dormant as their purpose has been fulfiled.

Maybe, but that is baseless speculation.

If we say a place like Orr actually gets fully restored, who will get that land?

I’d say the humans (for cultural, religious and historical reasons) but only after the pact has made sure all dangers are gone, all tombs are studied and all magical artifacts are removed.

I don’t know when or how Mesmers picked up mantras but they have used them since Guild Wars 1: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Mantra

As for Guardians using tomes, I think that has to do with the Guardian’s origin. The Guardian is a mix of Guild Wars 1’s Paragon, Monk and Ritualist professions (and possibly Dervish but that last one is unconfirmed). Many Ritualists and Monks dealt with the preservation of knowledge. For example, the Durmand Priory actually started as a monestary.

Not quite. Map travel in Guild Wars 1 suggests you really do travel the whole way, but they don’t show it. Way points are explicitly recognized in universe as teleportation.

Long ago there was a monk strike in GW1. Basically a lot of the monks refused to group with folks for whatever reason they had at the time, I honestly cannot recall the reason.

If I remember correctly it had to do with the fact that monks were always blamed for failure and never praised for succes.

I’d really like a novel taking place between 1080 AE and about 1120 AE (in other words, immediatly following the events of Guild Wars 1) with a charr main character.

I’d take pretty much everything from that era. The original had a lot of fans and it isn’t really covered, besides maybe the beginning of Sea of Sorrows (which did make me feel nostalgic I have to admit), so giving us atleast one book set in that period seems like a logical thing to do. Though in the current state it almost seems Anet has forgotten that the first set of games even existed. :/

The reason why I mentioned the charr main character is because a lot Ascalon-focused stuff happens during that time (the establishing of Ebonhawke, the Foefire, the construction of the Black Citadel, the charr rebellion).

Besides, both Ghosts of Ascalon and Sea of Sorrows have a human main character so a change of pace would be welcome in my opinion.

Supposedly it was an idea they had no time to really expand on further so they cut it out after they realized they couldn’t “complete” it in time for release.

Whether or not they’re being sincere on that reasoning is up to the individual to decide. I’ll note it’s not the only thing in the Beta builds which disappeared.

I can accept that it was scrapped because it wasn’t finished. What I don’t understand, however, is why it wasn’t implemented sometime after release, since it was already developed as far as it was. The same goes for the lore tidbits on the loading screens.

Even though it would be a bit late if they implemented them now, I would probably enjoy these sort of features much more than anything they have currently announced for feature pack 2.

Consider Dry Top, which has no hearts. Players on that map are participating in events all the time, largely on the premise that each event contributes to both map-level and personal-level goals. This gives me the notion that with a little help at the system level, events can and should be the bulk of repeatable open world content in Tyria.

I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

I think Dry Top would have much more replayability if it had event chains similar to Orr or at least one or two meta-events similar to the one in Harathi Hinterlands. Those are rewarding in terms of both narrative and gameplay. I think the current events in Dry Top are very lack-luster in those respects, focusing on just loot, xp, karma and other such rewards (both for the individual and the map) instead of focusing on the intrinsic fun of doing the events.

What happened to the Ritualist?

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

I would guess there are two parts to this matter.

On the one hand, we are flat out told the following about the Guardian’s origins (the first in an interview and the last in the novel Sea of Sorrows):

With the turmoil in Elona and the spread of the Order of Whispers into other lands, more Paragon teaching showed elsewhere in Tyria. These teachings melded with other traditions, and over time, the guardians and their abilities can be found throughout the world and among all the races. They are not tied to a particular race, philosophy, or group of gods but rather to a larger concept of proactive defense, of taking the fight to a foe and protecting those you fight alongside while appealing equally to humanity’s defensive nature and the charr’s desire to rule the battlefield.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training, wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha. A real grab bag of “you can’t hurt me”. They’re called guardians, and simply put, they mean trouble.

On the other hand, both the Canthans and the Tengu have isolated themselves from the rest of the world so Ritualist magic might be alive in a more pure form among them. We have no way of knowing this however.

Arghore, they were never ‘the good guys’ nor were they presented as such. Yes, they were killing a few which prevented disaster for the many, but to them the saving of others was a side-effect they didn’t actually care for. The only reason they were killing people was to save themselves. So their actions were never justified. Morale, at least to me, is not just about consequences but also about motives.

I kind of liked Prophecies’ story for making us, the player, almost a plaything in the struggle between Mursaat and the Lich, while at the same time dealing with a lot of other stuff on the side (ascalon’s demise, the dwarf civil war, the krytan civil war, ascension and so on).

That may be but how do you explain the fact that the nightmare court still wishes to fight the dragons?

Besides, the two sylvari which might be corrupted are soundless, not nightmare court.

Reading that interview is painful, even when you’re a fanboy like myself who has been with Guild Wars 1 since it’s first public beta event.

For example, saying you’re not implementing first person view because it would make people worse at combat? Really? Sure, that’s probably true, but so what? You have the functionality and a lot of people want it, mainly for roleplaying purposes and enjoying surroundings, not for combat. If people want to use it in combat and be worse because of it why not let them instead of deciding for them?

Concerning SAB I had a similar thought as you did, Jaken. It’s a festival, it’s suppose to be a fun time off. Who cares if it doesn’t fit the living story? Granted, I’m not a fan of SAB but I sympathize with those who do, primarily because I did enjoy Dragon Bash’s Dragon Ball.

If Scarlet’s leyline map is accurate ( https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/lore/lore/The-most-mysterious-drawing-in-Scarlet-s-Lair ), then the vines are following some leylines, but not others, which makes me think Mordremoth is specifically targeting those two sites, rather than just ending up there because that’s where the leylines go.

1) We don’t know if it’s a map.
2) We don’t know if it shows ley lines.
3) Even if it is a map and does show ley lines, it might still be that Mord is following major ley lines and ignoring minor ley lines.

I haven’t seen anything to suggest he is following those ley lines with some greater goal in my mind. To me it seems like he is just spreading through the path of least resistance, popping up whenever there are magical artifacts around (Fort Salma, Concordia and Village of Scalecatch).

There’s two lines of tendrils extending out from Maguma. One appears to be heading toward the Chaos Crystal Cavern, which we know from in game content had something to do with the construction of the Thaumanova Reactor. The other appears to be heading toward the Infinity Coil Reactor, which we know from in game content is an upgraded version of the Thaumanova Reactor.

Agreed.

Mordremoth may have some plan that requires both of them.

I don’t think so. I think the reason for the observed pattern is that major ley lines run between Mord and the Infinity Coil Reactor and between Mord and the Chaos Crystal Cavern. Remember that Mord’s tendrils spread through the use of the ley lines. Also remember that the done at the Thaumanova Reactor revealed the ley lines to Scarlet because it was on an intersection of ley lines.

Namely, one going from the Mordremoth to the Chaos Crystal Caverns and one going from Modremoth to the Crucible of Eternity, as I speculated here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/lore/lore/predictions-for-this-season/first#post4243227

Diovid.9506

One grueling problem I have with this idea of it going after specific targets such as the Crystal Caverns and Infinity Coil is Concordia. We’re being told that at the time of the attack the Krytan royal locket was in safe keeping. The same group who was keeping the locket safe happened to be ambushed by Mordrem.

Ah yes, I wanted to adress that but I forgot. Here’s what I think happened: Mord was not after that specific locket. Instead he, like Zhaitan, is after powerful magical artifacts. Both Concordia and Fort Salma are on the ley lines through which Mord spreads. Thus I believe the only reason he attacked Concordia and Salma was that 1) at that moment there were artifacts there and 2) they stand above/near the ley lines through which he spreads.

My theory is that the vines Mord uses (and which are confirmed to be part of him) function similar to Zhaitan’s Mouths. I remember a npc (probably Taimi) also confirming or speculating this. Possibly the Trashers are Mord’s eyes but I have no real evidence aside from 1) the trasher that plays an important role in Trouble at Fort Salma which seems to be a leader of sorts and 2) they have this one eye.

predictions for this season

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

What are your speculations for the rest of this season? Mine are listed below. Some of these may have already been partially or entirely mentioned by others.

1. Modremoth’s influence is spreading in two directions: 1) from the maguuma jungle to the Chaos Crystal Cavern and 2) from the maguuma jungle to the Infinite Coil Reactor. Why do I think so? This research.

What do these two things have in common? The Thaumanova Reactor. And what do we know about it? It was used to study chaos energy / dragon energy and it was instrumental for Scarlet in finding out about the ley lines, in fact it was built on top of an intersection of ley lines. I believe that the pattern in the waypoints corrupted by Mord that appears in the above research is a pattern showing important ley lines. Thus I suspect that when the reactor exploded this caused the ley lines to randomly teleport creatures from alongside the ley lines towards the Chaos Crystal Cavern. And I believe that the Infinite Coil Reactor, which continued the research of the Thaumanova Reactor, was built on an intersection of ley lines, like it’s predecessor.

2. In the Cavern of the Shining Light you can find this: Notebook. I believe this tells us that Mord is coming after the ghosts living in Ascalon. I further believe that the reason we see Rytlock trying to get rid of the ghosts is exactly this, to prevent Mord from consuming them. Also, I do not believe Rytlock will actually succeed in getting rid of the ghosts.

well technically no one has seen the gods since the exodus. we see their avatars though.

in fact, i might be wrong here, but isn’t malchor the only human to ever see the gods? and it blinded him or something? it’s too late for me to go fact checking, so feel free to point me in the right direction.

No, as said, the player character in guild wars 1 (as well as Devona and co presumably a.k.a. Destiny’s Edge predecessor) actually saw (and fought) two gods: Abaddon and Dhuum. Furthermore, as said, the player character (and again presumably Devona and co) saw the ascension of a new god: Kormir. This combined with all the indirect evidence of their existence (written, visible in the world, talked about by many of the races of the world) is pretty conclusive: they exist, or at least, they existed.

It is pretty much impossible to argue they have never existed, however one could argue that they are dead now. For characters living within the game world today there is no strong argument to be made in favor of this theory nor against this theory really. The only definitive source which talks about the gods is an out-of-game source (or is it? it has a header which implies it is a priory document but even then or especially then it would be 1. a fallible source and 2. possibly not widely known): The Movement of the World. The Reaper of Grenth at the end of the personal story is again just an avatar and could of course be wrong/lying.

This is primarily a problem with builds heavily using conditions but, for example, necromancers using marks must also endure this problem since marks are not triggered by objects.
