Unidentified gear - Please No, No, No, Nooooo

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m wondering if we’re really losing anything. If unidentified gear stacks, then how can the game identify which one is an exotic and which isn’t? Is there a secret, unseen list that keeps track of the identity of the items that have yet to be claimed?

From the sound of things, unidentified gear is just another die roll that drops on top of the kinds of drops you would normally get. Is there any proof that we’re missing out on rare and exotic drops that we otherwise would’ve gotten?

There is no list, it’s more RNG. The phrase “missing out on rares/exotics” is to indicate that if we salvage unids, those might have ID’d into rares or exotic.

In that case, I do not see the problem. If something we previously earned is being taken away due to unids, then there would be a problem. But if it is an additional system added on to loot that people are complaining about gambling on, then that is strictly an opt-in system. I’m going to salvage all my unids and never look back.

I’ve yet to see a definitive statement from anyone which suggests that we will still get the normal chance at rares and exotics as we get elsewhere. All I got was blue and green normal drops, but that might be due to a relatively small sample size.

It’s the other way around. You’ll have to prove that we’re losing out on drops elsewhere with the unids. It is a bit defeatists to assume a new system is inherently ripping you off via hidden changes to loot ratios mentioned nowhere.

This is ANet we’re talking about, remember. NPE? Adept traits available at L36 that unlocked in L60 areas? “Every player by level 80 should have max stat gear?” Not enough MP’s to be able to fully progress and avoid niche content on HoT launch.

I always, always, always assume the worst. That way I won’t be disappointed.

For me, the system kittens kitten. If I got an Unid’d drop I did not get a regular one at the same time. Paying to ID plus do heart plus go to vendor makes it more clicking and more tedious. If PoF needs to resort to this lame gimmick to keep people playing, ANet has sunk to a new low.

NPE has no bearing on unids.

Sure it does. UnID gear is the worst solution to gear. I don’t get to see what my reward is unless I take the time to complete a heart and then pay an exorbitant ransom. Or I can take my UnID gear and simply salvage or sell it all without ever knowing what it could have been. Sounds terrible.

This is a step back from even GW1 where we at least we knew the rarity of the item that was unid’d. Does anyone ever like systems like this that are arbitrarily gold sinks?

To answer your question, it’s a gold sink and a bad one.

Advice to ArenaNet: if the system you are implementing is not as friendly as the mechanic in your game a decade ago, probably don’t implement that system.

Good point.

In PoF, What Reward Does UnID Gear Replace?

It’s not going to “replace” anything — it is part of the reward.

Part of what reward? That is what I’m trying to find out. Currently if I get blues, greens, rares, & the occasional exotic, I know exactly how I handle those and what I get from those rewards. I am trying to figure out how getting UnID Gear changes my reward (see the thread title).

It allows people with low magic find to sell directly to people with high MF and earn more, for less effort.

Does it? Where did you find this information? Especially about earning more for less effort?

If you really want the information, it’s out there. There are people who ran controlled tests with a bunch of these, some with high MF, some with low. People with high MF will get better stuff, the non-ID will be tradeable via the TP (so no waiting around Kamadan).

Since they are tradeable, those with low-MF have the opportunity to sell for coin, without identifying, without salvaging, without choosing prices — that’s money for less effort. It will be “more” because those with high MF will be willing to pay a premium so they can take advantage of the higher MF.

My point about rewards is that PoF doesn’t exist now. When it does, the rewards it has will be its rewards. ANet doesn’t balance rewards by trying to ensure everyone gets the same blues & greens; they try to make sure that, overall, people have the same opportunities, that there’s some element of chance to spice things up. UnID gear doesn’t change that, although I’m sure it will change the details of how it happens.

In short, stop trying to shoehorn the new system into the old one. Look at the new system as, well, a new system. And do what you need… to make it work for you (just as you figured out how to make the old system work for you).

So there isn’t an official source or any centralized source of research numbers. That’s what I was asking.

And I’m not sure why you are accusing me of trying to shoehorn anything. All I’ve done is say I don’t like what I see so far and ask for more information. Stop putting words into my mouth.

You get one box free and can choose to never spend on them. I’m not sure why you’d be against this.

I never said I was against them being free, I deplore the addition of yet another gamble box in the gemstore. Eastern MMOs are completely full of gambling which apparently is what GW2 is going for since we’re also getting even more gambling in-game with UnID Gear.

Instead of thinking up more gimmicks, I’d prefer more Story or maybe even ARMOR! (Yes, I know these are different developers, but money spent on one is money not spent on the other.)

Hey I was wondering if The drop rate NERF to Winter berries was intended. Going from 40-50 berries to 15-20 is really Sucky. It had been so high for so long its really upsetting to get them changed after working on all the other maps.

Is this change somewhere in the patch notes? I don’t remember seeing it. I hate when game companies stealth nerf.

To me, if the purpose of UnID gear was only to save bag space, then there wouldn’t be any cost to ID the gear, and you wouldn’t have to complete a heart to do it. There is clearly other motivation behind the UnID system. Perhaps somebody on the design team thought it would be a way to add some interest to the game? If so, I think they were severely mistaken.

I can pretty much guarantee that UnID gear was not created to save us bag space. Anet sells bag space…

I do think that it might have been created to answer the complaints about too many greens & blues, and yes the identifying is a gimmick. I also don’t like the heart + cost issue and it seems from reports that you don’t get much for your effort / $.

But if people want to gamble, that’s their business. I just want to know if I’m losing anything with this new “feature”.

Most players don’t do trains or anything else to farm gold. They get on and just do the current content.

Sure, I get that you don’t agree with ANet’s choices. (I might not either … I’m still on the fence about it.)

My point is that there’s a reasonable argument to be made that the costs are appropriate, especially since the market just spiked due to this and other legendaries being added. I wasn’t so much asking anyone to agree with their choice as providing an opportunity for others to understand that there isn’t a single definition of “fair pricing”.

And I am providing a rebuttal to your argument

I have seen some threads about Unidentified Gear introduced in PoF and so far I don’t like the new Unidentified Gear. But one thing that will help me (and I think other players) decide how bad it is, to understand what reward the Unidentified Gear replaces.

1. Is Unidentified Gear a new reward in addition to what we already get? (unlikely imo)

2. Does Unidentified Gear only replace greens that I would have received anyway? Greens from where?

3. Does Unidentified Gear replace ANY reward that I would have received anyway? Even if that reward could have been a rare, exotic, or even a precursor?

I doubt that a player can answer this question unless it is someone like that_shaman. We’ll see if a developer wants to be open about this new feature and help us to understand it.

Cause people are trying to save some money. This is understandable – they just don’t understand how the resellers can end up with some bad keys. And of course only a small number of the keys are bad, so a bunch of people are like “mine was fine”. I personally wouldn’t speak up for a company that had sold bad keys in the past. If someone purchased a key because I and other people spoke up for the company and then that person got their account banned, I would feel terrible.

Unidentified gear - Please No, No, No, Nooooo

Djinn.9245

So……. let me get this straight…. MANY people over the years have complained about loot filling up their bags and there has to be another way. In comes the copper and silver salvaging gizmos. Then the complaints went to too many runes and stuff so still have to make a pit stop to sell off those and many came here and still come here to post these random complaints or dislikes or what have you.

NOW you get stacking unidentified gear that I assume stack to 250 and now you have:
1. Option to salvage
2. Option to have discover the gear then salvage.

So ANET once again seems to honor those who have the issues and I see no harm done in it. If you salvage and it appears you risk salvaging a possible exotic or precursor….. um…your risk you take.

Personally I see it as a good thing of saving bag space during random runs through the forests and in my downtime I can go discover and then salvage what I like.

People will just kitten anymore about anything….

1. Are you assuming these are all the same people complaining? (why?)

2. Customer feedback is important. Maybe you’ve seen one of the thousands of requests from businesses to give feedback on websites, receipts, or the separate pieces of paper sometimes given with a purchase.

He just said “walk”, he didn’t say “accomplish anything”. Which if you are trying to do map completion, MPs, Story, etc. you can’t. So I’m really not sure what his point is except to be a red herring.

Legendary Trinket questions/discussion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Djinn.9245

L-weapons are more/less available to everyone, whereas l-armor is stated by ANet to be one of the perks of raiding. So, as Cyninja says, legendary armor pieces aren’t necessarily a good comparison. Notice further that l-armor pieces use 15 clover versus 77 for an l-weapon. So it might be better to compare the cost of 5 armor pieces with one weapon. On that basis, 1400-1800g for trinkets is in the ballpark.

I’m having a hard time understanding this concept. 1 trinket = 1 piece of armor from what I can see, not a whole set.

He is comparing the requirement of Mystic Clovers between legendarys and mentioning that L-armor is heavily gated thus not a good comparison.

Correct. The only thing that L-Armor has in common with other legendaries is that its legendary. Its the only one that’s gated substantially behind something that can’t be soloed. It’s the only one that’s stated to be a specific reward for game play. It’s the only one in which subsequent copies are made through an entirely different process.

L-Armor also takes fewer mystic clovers, which is the best indicator that ANet intended for armor pieces to be cheaper than weapons (and now, also cheaper than trinkets).

Aurora is comparable in costs to L-weapons, which given its aura, seems reasonable.

Legendary weapons have effects, Legendary armor has effects. You can only hold 1 Legendary weapon from which you get full effects, so effects are bigger and weapon costs more. You need a set of armor and a set of trinkets. So it would make more sense to have trinkets be like armor imo.

On a side note, if all trinkets have big effects and you get a full set of Legendary trinkets, what will that look like? Will the full set be cohesive like the armor sets? Are the devs designing the full set to go together or will the effects be a garish mess that all cancel each other out in a big ball of light?

If you followed the topic, you would see that it’s pretty clear that I do speak for the real casuals, not the wannabes’ that try to pass off as ones, so they can say “l2p” and think anyone will actually listen to them.

Yeah, VB is a “jump puzzle” because gliding into an updraft or jumping on to a bounce mushroom requires a great deal of proficiency, right?

Have you considered that players come into Verdant Brink with none of the masteries you are talking about? Clearly you haven’t.

Yeah, you’re right. I was one of the anointed few who was given access to all of the HoT masteries from the start. Lucky me!

So what does this have to do with the claim that VB is one gigantic “jump puzzle” exactly? The fact that you have to explore, play, and progress through the jungle was by design and I really don’t see how it precludes casual players at all.

I didn’t say it precluded casual players. We are talking about a person’s comment that VB is one big JP, which I agree with especially before you have most of the Masteries.

Convenience vs hassle seems to balance out. (Items stacking so less inventory space taken up vs needing heart vendors)

Yes, convenience vs hassle, but I don’t get to decide whether I prefer the old way to save money. Everyone will get unID gear and if you want to do things the way you did before unID, you are forced to ID which adds a significant cost to your play.

I opened up the boxes, got a ranged weapon for my second weapon set and used the food given to us. No problem. Whenever I got low on health I dodged out and switched to range. The non boss mobs died easy. It was only the boss that gave some trouble.

If you didn’t get a ranged weapon or food from the boxes given to you, do that next time. Makes a difference.

However, if OP didn’t find a DH bow in the boxes, then that could be something that needs tweaked for future updates. Being nice and all benefit-of-the-doubt and such.

Other than that, everything you say is spot on.

My own take was it felt like I had to rush on the with the story before having chance to look at my inventory. Y’know, people being burninated and so forth seems to be a pressing matter. I then saw my character had a staff equipped (I do not mesmer with staff), and I couldn’t let it go on. Then, of course, I had to fix my wardrobe to be all pretty and the right colours, then I found boxes and had to open the boxes, and then my inventory was a mess, and to cut a long story short, if it truly was an urgent situation, someone other than Tests-with-Cake should’ve received the call.

If I’m being all nice again, I could suppose this: if anyone else happened to feel a sense of urgency in getting stuff done just like I did until I saw what a fashion faux pas it would’ve been, they may inadvertently forget to check what they have in their inventory, and thereby fail terribly at being equipped adequately for the mission.

LOL, nice post. I completely agree. I unfortunately have learned to ignore any feelings of urgency I have during the story because I am one of those casual players that have been playing GW2 since beta but still have trouble in the story instances. I know that if I rush in like the hero I am told (constantly) I am, I will soon be dead. So I have to ignore cries of anguish and go slowly, pulling smaller amounts of mobs and using slow tactics against bosses.

It is unfortunate for me that Anet decided to put this level (I understand it is no level to many) of difficulty into the Stories. It means that I (and many people I have read) avoid the stories as I don’t enjoy being a floormop. I do enough of the story to get to the new map and then don’t finish it unless I feel I have to. Then I have to beg some friends to help me.

Even if they make PoF more casual friendly, they aren’t going to get all those players back as they have moved on to other things.

No, but there is constant stream of new players, because the core game is free. Those, when finsihing free content and reaching HoT, were faced with the decision to pay or not. That also meant relearning how to play, forgetting the good things about core game and paying for things only fraction of players wanted.

Now with PoF it looks like Anet is providing a way to continue playing, and same time, pay for the game, while having same playstyle they all liked in core game.

I have seen many players being confused about this, they think since HoT was released earlie you have to play through HoT before starting up PoF. That is totally untrue, while you can buy HoT in the future too, and play in those maps like some twisted horrific alternative gamemode, the actual path to continue from free core game is to go into PoF areas.

This is one of the things that is wrong with GW2 in general. Many people didn’t understand how to get to HoT and now they won’t understand how to get to PoF. So many things in GW2 are not quickly apparent in-game, that you need to look up.

For me, personally, I think the hardcore groups would laugh at me, and my lack of builds, Mastery Points, and carefree attitude toward gaming.

I’m concerned that you believe there are only 2 extremes here, no range in the middle?

As for your personal effort while still not finding the game difficult, it happens all the time that people are naturally good at a skill. There are people who just pick up playing an instrument or easily understand math, etc. The fact that some people don’t have to “try” to be good at something doesn’t mean that the thing they are good at is easy. It is easy for them to be sure, but that doesn’t mean it is easy for everyone.

Which now begs the question, if we always understood that “casual” was a mindset when talking about any other activity, why do we suddenly get so confused when it gets applied to games?

That’s easy to answer: hardcores didn’t like being grossly outnumbered on the forums and even more-so in-game. So, they artificially broke up the definition of casual so they could argue against specific subsets of casual play. Thus, they “won” the arguments more.

Unfortunately, ANet believed them, and almost destroyed the game trying to cater to them.

But, being crushed in the marketplace caused ANet to reconsider, and they’ve moved back much closer to where they were in the beginning. Except for mapping, and for failing to nerf HoT mobs a little bit more, I think they’ve done well. They can’t go too far in the casual direction, because the game does have many hardcore players. They don’t want to alienate them any more than they did casual players with HoT.

Anet wanted to be more hardcore because they were introducing raiding, and the PvP “esport” idea. “Esports” didn’t work out well either. So now they have driven off many of the casual players that loved GW2 from the beginning. Even if they make PoF more casual friendly, they aren’t going to get all those players back as they have moved on to other things.

How the bloody 4377 do you think one solo character with exotic armor only can defeat a boss and 20 adds? Are you kidding me. That’s the same problem I had with HOT. I solo this game. None of my friends play anymore. So I’m supposed to go into story mode with NPCs that die instantly and fight my way through and then go further in with no NPC helpers at all? Tune it down and up the rewards or most will never do the story modes at all. And where’s the dragon hunter’s bow.

I bought Path of Fire because of the open world. I doubt very much based on this that I will do the story mode at all.

And before you all criticize, I have a high level dragon hunter that does high level fractals. In fact, every one of my characters is level 80, medium to high level fractals. Solo story mode in these expansions is a pain in the kitten terrible rewards and dying every 2 minutes because you are one again 20 adds and a boss is ridiculous.

So I’m asking the devs to tune it down on the story mode content. Some of us don’t have a merry band of four/five that we can take into story mode.

I have learned over the years of doing the stories to be very cautious and slow and have a ranged option. When I hit that portion of the story, I followed the boss hanging quite a bit back. I did not rush into the town. I waited for only 3-4 mobs to be separated from the others and dealt with them. Then I tried pulling one with the bow but got 3 more. That was fine. Etc.

It is unfortunate that if you are just an average player you can’t feel like a hero and go in distracting the boss and mobs from the villagers. Instead I had to let the boss and mobs kill the villagers so I could pull them in smaller groups. I guess that’s the way Anet wants you to feel in their stories.

Has Anet Remembered the Casuals?

OP, while you may self-identify as casual, there is little agreement among all who so identify. Some think of the word as meaning preference for easy content; others for limited time spent playing; still others for solo-only play. There may be as many understandings of what “casual” means as there are people using the term.

“Casual” is a mindset, or more aptly put, an approach on how someone plays the game. In simple terms, “casual” defines their motive and drive, as opposed to being serious about the game, or hardcore. Truth is, being “Casual” is irrespective of skill or time played. As how many hours someone invests into a game or how skilled they are at playing a game, have no bearing the mindset they have or how they approach the game.

In short, a “Casual” is not looking for a something serious that they have to work at or treat like a job, they are looking to escape into a fantasy world as someone might take a casual stroll in the woods to escape the daily grind of life.

OK, so that is your definition. That’s fine, as long as you realize that not everyone is using the word that way. Frankly, the unhelpful comments you complain about are the result of your using the word casual rather than describing your preferred play-style.

Hopefully, the other comments that you snipped from my post were helpful.

Don’t you find it odd that there would be other ways to define “casual” I mean, pause and ponder this for a moment. If you say to someone ’’I’m going for a casual stroll" they don’t think there is some time constraint to the walk, nor do they wonder how sure footed you, might be, or your ability to equip yourself for a walk Everyone instantly understand that it’s a leisure activity, something done for the enjoyment of it, never a question of your capacity to walk, or now much time you have to invest into it, but its fully understood that it’s all about your approach to taking the walk.

Just the same as if someone who is going to go on a casual boat ride, or a casual drive., there is no inclination of question their ability drive a car or a boat, the quality of the vehicle or how long or often the activity is undertaken. Its universally understood that what makes it casual is the mindset of the individual taking the cruse.

Which now begs the question, if we always understood that “casual” was a mindset when talking about any other activity, why do we suddenly get so confused when it gets applied to games?

I completely agree. Good points.

Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

The number one pro mount argument was if you don’t like mounts don’t use them. Well it appears mounts are required to explore the new maps, do the story and so forth even if you don’t like them or they make you sick. Like Just a Flesh Wound has in their signature, “Be careful what you ask for ANet may give it to you..” That signature has become so amazingly true. LOL

I’m really disappointed by the lack of gliding support with updrafts, ley-lines, etc. There isn’t any reason they couldn’t have included them in the game to give players two paths to the same goal. To me gliding has been the most fun part of the game since HoT came out.

You mean Anet allowing you to play as you want instead of forcing you to use the new Masteries? LOL!

The mount seems clunky to me.
- Gets caught on the terrain a lot
- Tends to be overly difficult to turn or pivot
- Jumps are hard to time for me. Either I jump way too soon and don’t cross the gap, or I end up waiting too long and don’t get off the jump. There also seems to be a bug where the jump simply doesn’t activate at all sometimes.
- The opening strike thing (even with mastery 1 & 2 unlocked) doesn’t seem very useful.

I agree.

And the opening strike moves the mount away from the mob (even when the mob is standing still) and ends up doing zero damage more than half the time for me.

Ok guys, you really need to work on the movement of mounts. They feel slow and clumsy. I understand that you wanted to make them feel special, since they are bigger and all, but really, their movement sucks. Make it faster, crisper and smoother.

I agree, I don’t like the “momentum” they gave the mounts. They are slow to start and don’t stop right when you want – they keep going a bit.

However, HoT with its mob density, abundance of mobs with break bars, coupled with no clear path to what was around you, including not being able to get POIs, and MP’s that were, as far as the map goes, right next to you, in some cases, paths were totally blocked till timed dynamic events opened them, with no clear way to know how or when these events would come about, made exploring the zones tedium to get through and an exercise in frustration to complete, for me at least.

Honestly, players who disliked HoT have long ago quit the game. Those who still play, and also post on the forums, are those who like the HoT content. (I have not played for a year myself, only checking new expansion out).

Actually, I dislike HoT and I still play. I just don’t go to HoT except if a daily is there or a collection requires it.

Go play Super Mario Galaxy to learn how to orient in a 3D environment and then play Bloodborne or Dark Souls to learn how to die and overcome challenges. Then play GW2 and you notice how easy this game is. Players these days… deconstructing the gaming industry since 10 years. I remember the 90ies where there weren’t any masses who complained about the games. Instead you contemplated and asked yourself: what can I do to get better? Stop the whiny kittening and entitlement and overcome the ‘challenge’.

Lol – “go play other games”…what?! If I have to play a platformer to learn to play an MMO, there’s something wrong. And who cares if there are more difficult games? I started playing GW2 because I liked how it was in Core Tyria. Anet fundamentally changed GW2 with HoT and I don’t like it. I don’t care about other games.

Imo GW2 is the most casual player friendly MMORPG i ever played. You have easy acess to highend gear. No ‘’you must play’’ endgamecontent. The HoT maps are a little bit confusing and the mobs are a little bit harder to handle but if u use dodging and spend a little time with exploring you’ll be fine with it.

Most of the HP in the jungle nowadays you can easily solo or duo.

I think it’s difficult for 1 person to predict what everyone else can or can’t do, as you are doing here. I would change the language to "I used dodging and spent a little time with exploring and I was fine with it.

Most of the HP in the jungle nowadays I can easily solo or duo."

Because none of these things is correct for me, at least.

Beta/Demo characters save no progress. Regular characters do.

If you want to play and have progress saved (and you can only play in non-PoF maps), use your regular characters.

If you want to play in PoF maps, use the Demo character(s). (No progress saved.)

Good luck.

So if I create and play a character in PoF right now, then logoff and login to my normal characters to do dailies, that PoF demo character and progress will be gone if I want to go back to it later tonight?

I’m sure we will at some point ride Aurene. In a story instance. Definitely not open world.

You’re sure? I hope you’re wrong. The dragons are terrible forces of nature, not mounts for us. And there would be no precedent – any time an NPC has special travel methods in-game, they always say they will meet us at the destination. I don’t know how many times I’ve said to myself “I would be fine with you taking me with you”.

Not sure why people write a “conclusion” thread based on only 2 anecdotes.

To be fair to the OP (if I understood their numbers), it was based off of 300+ gathers. If the drop rate was normally 50%, that would be plenty to suspect an issue; it’s just not enough for pearls dropping from mussels.

I said I don’t understand why people writ a “conclusion” thread. I have no trouble understanding why someone would suspect there was an issue.

We’ve heard of Balthazar who wants consume the Dragons’ magic. But we are heading to the Crystal Desert- the territory of the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik who the Destiny’s Edge fought with few years ago.

But it’s surprising that Kralkatorrik isn’t the equal villain as Balthazar.

We saw some pics of Branded and the dragon thingy but no sign of Kralkatorrik itself.

I hope we’ll get another trailer (maybe 1-2 weeks before release of PoF) who will show Kralkatorrik (something like the concept teaser before HoT).

We’ll see.

But out of topic- I hope Aurene Mount will be added in the future. That’d be cool.

Primordus and Jormag are also equal villains yet we “saved” them. Not sure what your point is.

And NO to Aurene mount! Terrible idea.

I don’t have any character with the right states to test but in theory hovering over the the legend with the map open should be able to tell you which you are missing for map completion regardless of what it is showing for daily completion.

That was already mentioned twice. The issue is that not everyone knows abut this trick.

We already have gliding and the skimmer mount to carry us across water. I don’t see any need for a boat other than fluff (which is a fine reason). If people would like boat fluff rather than other kinds of fluff, they should definitely cast their vote. I would prefer player housing and more armor skins (which apparently take huge amounts of dev time). So I vote “No” to boats.
