I actually am thankful that Anet is looking for ways to create fights that are alternatives to mobs that one-shot or are big bags of HP.

Measuring Up: SPOILERS

in Living World

Posted by: Djinn.9245

Djinn.9245

Does anyone know why we have to constantly prove ourselves? Every episode it feels as if we have to measure up for someone for some reason.

After killing two elder dragons and a world-threatening bat-kitten-crazy Sylvari, you would think we have proved how strong/faithful/dedicated/trustworthy we are. What else can we do to prove to these idiots we are the good guy?

Except for Livia, who is a living legend and has saved humanity a time or two, wouldn’t you like the our character to tell those questioning his trust and dedication, “Bite me. I’ve saved the world three times. Who are you to question anything about me? What have you done that gives you that right?”

tl/dr: Aren’t you tired of our characters having to prove themselves constantly?

I completely agree. What has Anise done personally to save the world, nevermind any of the Shining Blade that we encounter. I know the Shining Blade has fought in the past but that was a long time ago – no one from that time is among those who challenge us.

As I said in a different thread, this is just a bad plot idea and either no one could think of a better one or no one had the guts to tell whoever came up with it that it wasn’t a good idea.

Basically, there was trouble brewing in Kryta with the bandits getting all worked up over something. Turns out it was a minister rallying them under the banner of the White Mantle. The group traveled to the Bloodstone and attempted to awaken the Mursaat – awakening Lazarus the Dire, who would help them reclaim Kryta as he and his kind had done in the past… or so they thought. Lazarus kinda shrugged his shoulders at the White Mantle and left with barely a ‘screw you guys, I’m going home". He later approached the Commander with an offer of alliance against the Elder Dragons. Against the Commander’s better judgement, Marjoy goes with him. Meanwhile, Taimi noticed some strange readings with the dragon energy, and sent you to check out the minions of Primordus and Jormag who were both beginning to stir into awakening following the deaths of Zhaitan and Mordremoth. Turns out that killing one dragon allows the others to absorb the left over energy and add it to their own. It later turns out the killing the dragons is not a good thing, as doing so will eventually cause Tyria to be destroyed. Marjory returns to let the commander know that Lazarus is not at all what he seems to be, and when confronted he reveals himself to be Balthazar, the Human god of Fire and War. He has been weakened by a loss of power and sees the dragons as a new energy source… One he plans to tap into even if it means destroying the world as we know it.

Following the Raid storyline, we discover the White Mantle had several ‘aspects’ of Lazarus the Dire that they had planned to bring together to resurrect him fully. Minister Caudecus had hidden one of the aspects, leading to the botched ritual in Bloodstone Fen. In the process of tracking down Balthazar, the Commander runs into Anise, who sends them to find a missing Shining Blade Exemplar who was tracking the last missing aspect. Once found, it is revealed the Exemplar plans to use the aspects to revive the true Lazarus in order to destroy him fully once and for all.

The problem is how do PvE players find out this info in-game (not in a raid which not everyone plays):

-Who is the White Mantle?
-Who are the Mursaat?
-Who is Lazarus?
Etc.

Basically, Season 3 has no back story in normal PvE. I don’t think the raids even really explain much. These issues and characters appear out of nowhere.

I agree with this thread. GW2 started with the idea of characters being individuals who had choices that affected the world. Now we’re down to “every character, no matter what their individual situation, is going to take this oath”. Because this one organization is the only one that decides not to trust the commander with a secret? No, because some writer came up with this bad idea for a plot and no one had the stones to say “find another plot idea”. So sad.

Used my viper warrior with torch+sword, 4 cc skills (2 are needed for breaking the bar) and healing signet. I had 6 stacks from hands when boss went finally down. Just dont hit boss until your CC and burst skills are up and the bar not broken.

Then headbutt + another CC, zerk mode for burst and done in 3 phases. Btw, I think i could dodge some hands, not a lot but some.

If you read the thread, warriors don’t seem to be the problem. It would be nice if other classes chimed in with advice.

I would put the pet on passive and kite until you have all your skills. Then break bar, F2 & do your progression. F3 when you are finished your progression. Then go back to kiting. Rinse, repeat. Have regeneration if the mob is doing more dmg than you can heal with the limited time you have your heal skill.

Just a note that breaking the bar is not necessary – it will just take longer. I didn’t break the bar and still succeeded.

Has anyone tried using consumables such as Fire Ele, Pet Whistle, pod turret, and so on?

I meant to but forgot to bring any. However, I did find that once you figure out the requirements this fight actually isn’t so bad. Which is saying something since I am terrible at these Story fights.

I just won this fight on my Berserker (which may seem obvious but I lost it twice before I figured it out). A couple hints that helped:

-Have Regeneration
-Kite while your skills are on cooldown. I spent a very boring time running in circles waiting for ALL my skills to come back up. Then I hit all my progression and then ran around again.

And back to Ayrilana’s question, I didn’t have any consumables but my Berserker does have Runes of the Privateer and my Parrot did help with damage

Defeating Self Doubt

Djinn.9245

I just managed to get the achievement. As someone alrdy said, you just have to stay alive until you have 25 stacks of “Crushing Guilt”, cause the Self-Doubt will then only have 1 stack of “Guild Exploitation” (You might need to wait for the 26. hand, but you won’t gain more then 25 stacks and the self-doubt won’t gain more than that 1 stack) – That means your cooldowns are very high, yes, but you will deal 96% of your normal damage to your opponent. So just start the fight as usual, break the bar and burst, wait for your cooldowns and do the same thing again.

I played ele using the following stuff (condi ele with survivabilities):
Traits: Fire (1-1-1), Water (3-2-3), Tempest (3-3-1)
Skills: Glyph of Elemental Harmony, Glyph of Elemental Power, Glyph of Lesser Elementals, Signet of Fire, Glyph of Elementals
Armor: Viper and Sinister Mix with Rune of the Berserker, Dagger/Focus (Almost like the condi ele build by qt)
Bufffood: Mango Pie

I just stayed at water to have 2 healing effects, 1 by mango pie and the other by “Soothing Mist”. When my cooldowns were reset I used skills 3 and 4, waited for the stacks of Dynamic Defense to disappear, used skill 5. If that wasn’t enough I switched to air using skills 3 and 5. Then to fire and burst (skills 2, glyph of elemental power, fire signet, skills 3+4). Then back to water and repeat. If Glyph of Lesser Elementals or Glyph of Elementals had no cooldown, I used one of them on water to have the elemental doing some cc as well.

So, I hope some of you (maybe elemental players) will help this
Good luck!

That is a lot of effort given that condi ele beats the boss (with achievement) before even having 10 stacks.

YOUR condi ele? Or are you claiming you know about all condi ele?

For people who had no trouble with this fight, I’m happy for you. Apparently you think that all players will have the same gear, or knowledge of the game, or skill at character creation, fighting, whatever. What is easy for some people is not easy for everyone – think everyone can play the flute or build a house?

People / threads that complain about difficulty don’t benefit at all from replies like “it was easy”. That’s just people bragging.

Enjoy the thread now, because it won’t be long before we get dozens of posts saying “I figured it out in 3 minutes because I’m amazing!”

I’m not amazing and I didn’t figure it out in any amount of time at all. In fact, I just got immensely frustrated and quit the kitten thing.

Those sorts of fights need to be safely tucked away in raids and dungeons where folks who enjoy that stuff can seek them out. The Living Story should be fun and entertaining and not so difficult that you need to go looking for tricks and tips on forums. Normal stuff should be fun not frustrating. Anet seem to have forgotten that.

Anet doesn’t care if the average person can accomplish their Stories with any amount of fun (if at all). Which is strange since they sell their stories to people who didn’t log in the first 2 weeks of them…

Why can’t noone from Anet swing by and say yes they will be comming back or no its a one time thing? If you write to support to ask they will just send you a reply to write on forum. You come here and can not know the answer cause aparently the players do not know it either and Anet won’t say a thing. Like its not enough of a ripoff…

Unfortunately, they are unlikely to reveal their plans for the future. “Limited Time Only” sales work on the customer’s anxiety that they will never see the item again. Therefore it would defeat the purpose if they officially stated that the item would be offered again.

I want to know if items droped from black lion chest like the wings and back feathers combo available now or the elemental sword and all items like that will be making a comeback? Are they a one time deal?

Until now i farmed and farmed and spent many keys to get all of them. Today i spent 25 keys to get the glider no succes but i am not mad cause i got some sweet loots.
But i am worried because i rly want the wings so now my question is should i force myself in farming and waste maybe 1000 more gold on keys to get the wing or maybe not even then cause of the rngisus? Or they will be back and if i do not get them now i could save keys for the next time?

I looked everywhere on wiki but i could find nothing about this.

The items available in Black Lion Chests are changed regularly, usually with each Living Story episode, Festival, and Expansion among other reasons. I personally would not gamble to get any specific item using Black Lion Chests. I would save up my gems instead of exchanging for keys and purchase the item I want. Or if the item is a skin that can be sold, save your gold and purchase from the TP. But that’s just me – good luck.

Who says a necromancer has to have a scythe? You act like “this is a necromancer’s weapon and we don’t even have one commonly available!” But it ISN’T a necromancer’s weapon.

Have you actually looked at Necromancer staff skill animations?

“Staff skill”, not “scythe skill”. Seems pretty obvious to me.

These animations visually turn staves to scythes. Thus making it clear that devs also think that the scythe is iconic for necromancers.

The staff is one of many weapons that can be wielded by a necro: Greatsword, Staff, Axe , Dagger, Scepter, Dagger, Focus, Warhorn. Obviously not that iconic among all those choices.

I log on and what is there to do? Nothing – which is why I log out and watch hour long videos about why Guild Wars 2 is boring.

Can we have something to do other than just combat?

Unfortunately, MMOs seem to all have the base method of gaining XP as killing things. It is something that I have always lamented. Back when I played Tabletop Roleplaying games, almost all of my Game Masters were very creative and “kill things” was never THE answer to the problem. In fact I had one GM that took away XP if you used that as your expedient solution.

But these are games that have to make $ and also appeal to the most people. Developing non-combat means of progressing through the game would be risky so I understand why MMO developers don’t do it. I’m just pleased when there are a few non-combat options in them. And GW2 does have non-combat things to do as others have pointed out. I’m currently finishing up Chuka and Champawat, and while there is a lot of combat, there are also a lot of other interesting things in this journey that I appreciate.

I think it would help if there were more Festivals.

I also agree with the OP that Taimi should not be the central character of every story. I would like to see more variety. If Asuran tech is indeed the answer to every problem, then they should be the master race on Tyria already. In the beginning, Asuran tech used to be “hit-or-miss” – sometimes it worked but often it went horribly awry. Which is why Asura are not actually the master race. But along comes Taimi and suddenly she has the answer to everything. I HATE that kind of writing!

Asura are master race when it comes to magic and eternal alchemy. They understand it better than anyone else. You have to understand that Tyria is not on the surface of Earth. A whole different set of laws apply to races there. If Charr really wanted, they probably could wipe all the races from Tyria. So really master race is a very abstract term here to use.

No, they really aren’t the master race when it comes to anything. Go back and play Metrica again. Almost every heart and event revolves around an experiment going wrong.

Again, and again, this is not about uniquety or rarity of the specific skin, but about the fact that it’s the only normal scythe skin in game, and there’d be zero problem if there was an alternative. And although I played actively since beta there was never a surefire method to acquire this skin.

And the reason it bothers me it’s because I main a necromancer and is there anything more cruel than playing a necromancer when anet constantly swings a “ha ha, can’t have a scythe” sign in your face

Who says a necromancer has to have a scythe? You act like “this is a necromancer’s weapon and we don’t even have one commonly available!” But it ISN’T a necromancer’s weapon. There is no ACTUAL scythe (used as a scythe instead of a staff) in the game, nevermind assigned to necros. It’s a visual emblem that you want for YOUR necro but not everyone wants the stereotypical “death” image for THEIR necro (I certainly don’t so I’m glad that Anet didn’t choose to assign a scythe to necros).

dragon stand !!

Djinn.9245

So do the commanders’ actions have an impact on the problem or not? I don’t think so, it shouldn’t technically happen that squads are split up at this point.

In a way. Unless I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you meant the map reset. When the new map starts and everyone gathers at the entrance and waits patiently for the end of the world.

What I meant is that the commanders could help to improve the situation. Scenario: 2 full squads, 50 ppl each. Both comms end up on the same map at reset. In both squads ~20 ppl can’t join because the map is full. Now if one commander switches to another map, both can get their complete squad onto theirs instead of leaving many ppl stranded on a few empty maps. No more frustration. Or less at least.

I thought that was what you were referring to. I do it all the time and, apart from a few ppl who rage quit as soon as they see one “map is full”, it always works just fine. Remaining spots on both maps fill fast via lfg.

Wouldn’t it be great (and far more logical than the current situation) if the system automatically put one squad in one map and the other squad in the other? I honestly can’t imagine why Anet didn’t set it up this way in the first place.

Felicia Day / Zojja

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Djinn.9245

It could be all of the above. Felicia Day, besides being an actor and performer (not always the same thing) is a gifted self-promoter, something required of actors & performers who aren’t lucky enough to fall into a great job. It is simply good marketing on her part to say she’s looking forward to X when meeting a fan of X, rather than saying, “oh, jeeze, I offered to work for half my going rate and they said that was outside their budget.”

That would make her truthful about waiting for a call, even if she doesn’t expect it due to no longer being affordable.

I think you hit it right on the money.

As for how to handle Zojja, I understand that voice acting is important and Felicia is a very recognizable voice, but I personally would rather they get a new voice actor for Zojja rather than never see her again because they can’t get Felicia for whatever reason.

Raids are a different matter than regular content. It is difficult enough that it should need dedicated roles.

Maybe, but between variety in encounters/mechanics and in the strengths and weaknesses of each profession’s take on a role, you can get to a point where it the same few builds aren’t ideal for everything, and substitutions are less painful. Losing the counterplay of builds that GW1 had has hurt things in that regard, though.

Not really sure where, other than raids, you need dedicated roles so I have to disagree.

Fighting Dragons is fun, but we have the possibility of being caught in a battle of the gods. “My light was dim, they’ll notice me now!” Or words to that effect. I don’t know about you, but being thrown into a war of that magnitude… BRING IT ON!!

You mean, a fight between comparatively weak “gods” (if I’d even call them that, considering how they are only part of the lore of a single of our 5 races, and mostly seem to be something like minor world-caretakers), instead of between forces of nature in the form of dragons?

Yeah, sounds amazingly epic…

I mean, as I said above, the switch away from the dragons was ok. But to what they switched, and how utterly random it showed up with no prelude, no introduction and no rhyme or reason? Meh.

I agree that the introduction of Balthazar was fairly weak. I think that the beings the Humans call “Gods” should have more of an impact when they are on Tyria so there should have been clues that Balthazar had returned and, as in the trailer, if one of them “never left”. There are people who worship these gods, I assume even priests of some kind. Those people, and the Order of Whispers, should have had some idea that something was going on. That would have made it an even better story: why are these things happening if the gods are gone?

As for the gods only being lore for one of the races, that doesn’t mean they still aren’t powerful beings that the other races should be wary of when they appear and take an active role.

What if they were commanded to remain silent? What if they are aware and choose not to warn others. That would be interesting.

A god could command his worshippers and priests to remain silent, but many Whispers agents aren’t human and probably wouldn’t care about such a command. Assuming that the god knew that they had information. Since the human gods aren’t all-powerful it’s possible they wouldn’t know who had information about them and who didn’t.

There’s not a version of a lot of weapons in-game. I won’t bother to try to name them. And a scythe isn’t even usually a weapon (yes I know that sometimes it was). No dice, OP. There are a vast excess of Hero Points in HOT. It’s just a matter of knowing which you can solo, which you can solo quickly and which ones don’t require combat.

Yes, you either try to play normally which means struggling to get to the HP only to find it’s a champion that kills you, or locked behind a Mastery and might also kill you, or you have to “study up” (leave the game) to figure out which ones you can do solo or with the odd person that might be along to help. Not a good system to me and will be even worse once the new expansion hits.

If a hero point seems too hard, it probably is – just move on (or reroll full minion Axe/Focus necro – easiest elite spec unlock ever. Using this method, you can get reaper in level up gear…).

I actually enjoyed unlocking the elite spec when HOT launched, mainly because of the hype associated with “oh, I got a new skill! WHAT DOES IT DO?!” You have to take time to appreciate the small things – it’s okay to be a little impatient, but a big part about being casual is the journey, not the destination.

Unlocking the elite spec when HoT launched was easy because there were huge numbers of people in the maps…

One of the most maddening tasks is trying to please everyone. It can’t be done. But we try. Anet is trying to. All the moving parts in this game, all the different facets wanting their attention. They are dealing with a living, breathing world. Most mmo’s are sandboxes, or theme parks. Anet broke that mold. They dumped the trinity, they added underwater battles, jumping puzzles, gliding. We have more means of transportation then any game I have played. We can even send gifts to eachother through the BLTC. Remember the attack on LA? I have played mmo’s since 2003 and I have never seen a braver step then destroying a city, and rebuilding it. That battle felt so real, the feels after seeing smoldering ruins.

My point is this, we may not be happy with every single step, or change, or update. But we can have a little faith and let things unfold. We have a new update coming, a season finale. Then an expansion. Fighting Dragons is fun, but we have the possibility of being caught in a battle of the gods. “My light was dim, they’ll notice me now!” Or words to that effect. I don’t know about you, but being thrown into a war of that magnitude… BRING IT ON!! We faced one god in gw1, now imagine all 6. That would be amazing and give them stories to unfold, imagine the divide in the citizens religous beliefs. Look at Balth revealing himself, Kas fell to her knees, Jory drew her sword. Even they chose opposite sides of that fight. That is how I hope the expansion goes. We’ll see.

“Lf chronotank, heal druid, DPS”.

Yeah no Trinity at all right?

Anet dropped the ball with the expansion in every way. Period.

Raids are a different matter than regular content. It is difficult enough that it should need dedicated roles.

As for the gods only being lore for one of the races, that doesn’t mean they still aren’t powerful beings that the other races should be wary of when they appear and take an active role.

no shared exp... why party?

So, I started playing about 5 weeks ago, purchased the game about a month ago. I’ve been having fun playing, so last night I suggested my brother, who lives in a different state, download and try it out. We haven’t really gamed together since I quit WoW 5 years ago. Tonight we partied up, and i ran down to where he was at in the starting area, and proceeded to kill mobs, only to realize that he wasn’t getting experience for anything I killed, unless he was able to tag it first. I’m level 80, I don’t really need the experience for killing low level mobs. The whole point was so that we could play the game together, but the way it’s set up, he’s better off if I’m off doing something else while he levels. This makes no sense. There’s no reason to group up together, and if there’s no reason to group up together then there’s no reason for him to buy the game… we might as well be playing different game while hanging out in Teamspeak.

I understand where you are coming from. When I started the game I had the same issue. Me and my friends would run around doing hearts and because I am not as quick as them they would always be waiting for me to finish. That hasn’t changed (they’re still quicker than me) but I guess we just got used to it.

One thing you could try is having him play a class or weapon that has good AoE tagging like Guardian/staff or Warrior/longbow.

Can't wait for the CD Mastery Points

If your idea is implemented than the devs not only have to create a vendor that sells items, but they also might have to somehow change an item type (masteries) that was never meant to be a currency to a currency.

Also, what happens if you “spend” all your surplus MP and then need them later? Seems like a Customer Service problem waiting to happen. “Why did you give us a way to use up our MP if we’re going to need them later?”

When I make a new character, I instant level to 80 and also gain instant access to my full elite specialization.

Thank goodness for WvW.

Honestly, nothing special here. You play some hours to get the elite unlocked, others play 30 minutes HoT Hero Point train and get it unlocked. For me, the latter sounds like more fun, faster and easier. Thank goodness for 10 point hero challenges in PvE!

I didn’t realize illuminating an alternative way for the OP to achieve his goals would affect you in such a way. My apologies.

Except you didn’t illuminate anything. You actually presented “I can do this differently from you!” but not anything about how which is actually the opposite of illuminating.

stop driving gem sales.

You mean, don’t let the company make any money to pay their employees to work on the game?

I don’t purchase outfits because I prefer to mix-and-match. That doesn’t mean that I don’t help support the game – I purchase armor skins and other things that I do like from the gem store.

Can't wait for the CD Mastery Points

People seem to misunderstand my topic, my point is not that there should be an exact number of mastery points, but rather, that the excess doesnt get wasted. I agree with everyone, that when its just for unlocking the masteries, players should have a wide variety of options.
But I’d just hate see the currently unused 23 points in my wallet remain there forever.

This surplus of MP means that if they introduce content later that you don’t want to do to get MP, you will still be able to get the Masteries. People who are able and willing to do every single bit of content and gain every single MP will probably always have surplus MP for this reason.

A simple solution that would make a lot of players happy and wouldn’t add to the workload for the devs on creating new outfits.

BREAK OUTFITS INTO PIECES!

Yup… simple as that… break outfits into pieces, let us mix’n’match outfits, allow armor parts to show for any outfit slot that is left empty, or even just add the outfit parts as universal armor skins.

Read the thread. This has been suggested but I’m not sure why you think it is a “simple” solution.

Or simply change the color of their text to match the tag?

No, we already have red for Map chat, gold for guild chat, etc. If we changed a red commander’s text to red that would be confusing.

No, it’s really not. It’s ascended crafting materials. There’s probably nothing that’s more common, as a matter of fact.

The cutesy little callout is fun, and i generally do like it, but it would be a lot more meaningful and less agitating if it occurred only when looting something which actually isn’t very common.

I don’t know if there’s an engine or coding restriction that would prevent the callout from being disabled when looting ascended crafting materials, but if that’s the case i more than support having the quality of ascended mats being bumped down to green or below. Higher quality should be reserved for higher rarity, and this stuff is more common than dirt (or at least sand, which at one point was quite sought after)

I’m sure when the original devs thought up that remark and attached it to rarity, they couldn’t possibly have imagined that later devs would introduce ascended materials that are actually the most common in the entire game if you play that content. I’m not even sure WHY those materials are incredibly common – what do people use them for in huge quantities that I’m unaware of?
