Just be glad you are not one of the devs.
Weekend leave: cancelled.
Meal times: cancelled.
Sleep: cancelled.
Toilet breaks: um, ok but take the laptop with you….
I always get a bit worried when I see folks who are planning to take the day off work on a launch day. If you are not undone by server lag/overload you are highly likely to be undone by bugs and glitches. As stated above, they can do all the beta testing in the world but nothing can prepare the system for first contact with hundreds of thousands of eager and excited players. Some will be seeking exploits, some will do the quests in the “wrong” order or log out are the “wrong” time and some will insist on climbing all over the new scenery and getting stuck in the tiniest of cracks.
We’re all lovely but we’re just so darned unpredictable….
Are we saying that remapping it to CAPS lock will make it toggle or have I misunderstood?
Yeah, let’s not do the “one person is not a guild” argument again so soon. It was done to death a few days ago and I know you’ll all be surprised to hear that, despite much passion, eloquence and abuse, not a single person changed their opinion on the subject. ;p
@OP. None of us are sure how the new guild system will pan out for one person guilds, only time will tell. However, players are an ingenious bunch so I can envisage an informal system of cooperation between such guilds to assist each in gaining whatever they need to progress. This will probably start with the “liberate the guild hall” thing. I’ll help you liberate yours, you help me with mine etc. Even if some stuff is out of reach for such guilds, there is nothing to say that it will remain out of reach forever. In MMO-land, change is always on the horizon.
I’m also a “solo” PVE player. I’m new to GW2 but I’m already developing the same pattern of play that I enjoyed so much in other games, including GW1 all those years ago.
I put “solo” in quotes because I still interact with other players but not usually on a formal “join the party, do the thing” basis. I love the casual cooperation that these type of games bring. Most of the time I’m focussing on my own targets, wandering around chasing map completion or something but if I happen across an event I join in. If I find a dead player I’ll rez them (actually I rez NPCs too because.. XP), if someone is fighting a hero challenge I’ll help them, even if I’ve already completed that challenge, and I’ve had others help me in the same way. One day I was struggling to find a way up to a Vista and a passing player hopped up to a ledge and said “jump here”. I was pleased to be able to do the same for another player at a different Vista a few days later.
This morning I was seeking a 4th event for the daily and I stumbled across a location with the highest concentration of players I have yet seen (maybe 50 people?). They were all just standing around, waiting. Then… Fire Elemental! Brief fight, big chast, job done.
I’ve never really enjoyed dungeons and raids, especially the uber level ones, so I mostly don’t need to get involved in those “proper” parties. I have done it in other games, but it just doesn’t satisfy me. So for me the pleasure is in that casual mostly-solo-but-with-a-bit-of-informal-interaction vibe (the personal story instances actually feel a bit lonely!)
When I have done everything I think I can reasonably do with one toon, I’ll do it all again on another. Then I’ll probably come to the forum and complain that I have nothing to do!
As for HoT, we should wait and see how it shapes up before being too upset about solo-able content. I’m looking forawrd to gliding….
I have a very important question. if i have Deep Cave in que to build, but its build time is way past HOT release date, will it auto complete and give me the space? or did i just waste all my gold
In another thread an official chappie stated that anything that has started building will auto-complete and for free. So as long as it has started, rather than just being queued then you should be OK.
I’m 2 days away from upgrade level IV and then I will be staring the 2nd guild stash/thing trusting that it will auto-complete as stated.
Some of you must be reading different forums to me. Example:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Personal-Story-Restoration-update/page/8
That’s great communication, right there.
Pretty sure I’ll be able to remedy that particular problem. I can drive anyone mad…
I’m new and I’ll be trying a bit of everything but mostly focussing on accumulating as many 20 slot bags as I can by collecting/buying candy corn cobs/pieces:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Halloween_Pail
I’ll hopefully also get my hands on some daft costume/cosmetic items too.
Usually the daily takes about seven minutes, about as long as the OP’s Commodore 64 takes to load.
He should upgrade from cassette tape to the C64 floppy disk drive. iirc that was about 20% quicker than tape. Quite an achievement to get such a poor performance increase. Um, not that I’m old enough to remember or anything…. cough cough… nothing to see here…
I thought grinding was when you rubbed up against two strange girls in the club?!?
according to ohoni it is a grind because you only want what’s gonna happen at the end and not the process of buying them drinks. Life is such a grind.
I think you might be confusing grind with bump.
…boom….tish!
A lot of what people call grind, I call game.
But here the OP seems to be worrying about grind that has NOT HAPPENED YET.
At least wait until you’ve played the new stuff for a while before complaining.
I like the dailies. Great variety.
Hating them because they make you change zones, which is painful because of your abnormally slow load times is focussing on the wrong problem. If your load times are that slow how do you play anything in the game????
Anyhow, if you don’t like dailies, um, don’t do them. Simples.

+1. Seems odd to get a new class and no slot for it.
But before you are too critical of the Anet way of doing things, reflect upon the fact that they are much, much better than some of their competitors!
We didn’t have one slot per class at release either.
Yeah, but that’s a bit different imo.
Folks are buying an expansion that comes with one new class. Any long term player is likely to have max level toons in all their existing slots and will be desperate to try the new class. Sure, those players will probably have enough gold to buy a new slot with gems but I’m thinking back to the expansions for GW1 where you typically got 2 new classes and 2 or 4 slots, depending upon whether you added it to your existing account or opted to use it standalone.

There are some very strange views on the world in this thread. Like most things related to technology, video games depreciate.
You always pay a premium for being there on day one. I paid full price for the original Guild Wars (1) and for each expansion as it launched Later on I bought the whole lot again in one box for less than a third of the price. The price you pay for the expansion pays for future developments as well as the current development. They need to keep the business in business. And it’s not like they hit you with an expansion every 6 months…
If you don’t think the current price is worth it, buy it in a few months time when it will be cheaper. Or wait until the next expansion and get even “better value”. You pays yer money and you makes yer choice.
And, yes, new players
I’m a new player and initially I just did not suss out the damaged armour thing. So I was surprised and a bit miffed when I was suddenly naked after dying one time too many. It was quite a relief to find that not only was my armour repairable but also that the repair was free.
I’ve also gone AFK a couple of times in a location I thought was safe returned to find a dead toon.
And imagine having to suddenly go AFK do deal with something in RL and returning to find yourself dead, naked and with your death counter having been incremented a couple of dozen times by well-meaning players!
This is not a biggie but this morning I was doing the daily events thing and I happened to be in a map with many, many players doing the same. I missed out on being counted as having “done” some of the events despite being present throughout them. And on the flip-side I got credit for an event that I had only just reached, before I had chance to do anything.
On the “defend the base” type events most of the attackers were being intercepted and trashed miles away from the base, by players who knew the spawn points. I was standing inside the orange circle with nothing to defend against so I can understand it if the game decided I was not participating on that particular one. However, on one of the “escort” events I followed the oh-so-slow pack bull and made sure I tagged some of the ambushers but still did not get a credit for the event. It was notable that due to the large quantity of players the mobs were going down in seconds so registering a kill was not easy but I definitely hit a few and got some loot to prove it.
There were plenty of events and it did not take me long to notch up the 4 I needed but I am curious as to what I could have done differently.
So my question is what is the criteria for being deemed to be have “done” an event?
I’ve taken that reply as gospel and just spent pretty much all of my gold on influence to spend on the second level of guild storage. So I’m hoping the reply is accurate hehe.
Use the -bmp command line switch described here:
So, these coconuts then. Will they be unlimited use or will they have a limited number of charges?
If one had a mount it would be easier for one to distinguish oneself from the peasants.
(I believe some of them don’t even shower after a hard day scrabbling around in the filth and being repressed.)
Man, that mission was almost the end of me in GW1.
It took dozens of attempts spread across several days before I got past it. It was early doors in the game and THK was absolutely teeming with pugs and guilds all equally stumped. You’d spend ages thinking you’d got everything under control then that last wave would come in and… WHAM! Insta-wipe. Up until then the main storyline had been a breeze so it was a rude awakening. That was how I joined my first “proper” guild.
Of course, later on it became almost routine.
So, yeah, bring back a flavour of it please.
Holy Trinity? No. No thank you.
Mounts would be fun though.
I’d really like to know this too. By the 23rd I reckon I could have started the second guild vault but it will not have finished. I won’t have enough gold or influence to rush it though. So will it all be lost or will it complete and come on-stream in the days following the launch?
The other question is will a two person guild be have any way to upgrade the guild storage after 23rd?
I guess we need a proper official grown-up to answer these definitively.
Frankly, I don’t consider that to be griefing.

Comparing GW2 price and content with that of GW1 is not particularly useful. They are different games from different times.
If you don’t like the price, don’t pay it. You are not forced to buy it immediately and I’m sure there will be special offers down the line. But if you want a reason to pay, just consider how many game play hours it will give you. It’s a no-brainer for me…

I finally decided to buy the game about a week before it went free to play. The logical options I had were to either buy the base game or pre-purchase the expansion for $30 more… ended up buying the expansion for $50 to try the game for the first time and it goes F2P a week later.. bad luck or I got screwed. Either way I feel like I was ripped off.
You’d have a valid point if you had bought the core game but you’ve bought the expansion for pretty much the same price everyone else has paid. No-one is getting the expansion for free so you have not been ripped off at all.
If you try the game, don’t like it and stop playing you’ve lost out.
If you enjoy it and keep playing then it’s all good.
I got mine from Amazon UK. It came as a standard DVD box with absolutely nothing in it except a single piece of paper with the unlock code on it. So it is sort-of a physical copy but not really. The main reason I bought it from there is because it was 5 quid cheaper than the official store.
Definitely needed. I’ve been having nightmarish flashbacks to bukdek byway when I go into the beta stuff.
Haha! You just made me flinch, and I haven’t been back there for at least 6 years

The F2P is a good addition. The restrictions are perfectly-pitched, giving new players enough game to play but also enough incentive to upgrade. Less inventory space, two character slots, no daily chest, can’t buy gems with gold, can’t access guild bank, slightly-annoying nag button at the top-left of the screen, level-limited access to Lion’s Arch plus some other stuff. They have also been careful to make F2P accounts unattractive to botters. You can’t just create an account and spam chat or transfer assets out of that account.
So whilst there will be plenty of folk in game who never upgrade, it is also providing some new players to the paid game. I get that there might be some resentment from non-F2P folks but it will being new life to the game imo.
I started as F2P not long after it became available and upgraded to paid a couple of weeks ago.
Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

In the context of Guild Wars 2, a one person guild is 100% valid because… the game lets you make one. As Vicky would say, “My logic is undeniable”.
You can argue semantics until the cows come home but I paid that gold piece and made a guild with just me in it. It looks like a guild, it smells like a guild and it’s called a guild so I reckon it’s a guild. I like the game mechanics that allow me to have a solo guild but also be able to join other guilds.
My problem is one of timing. It’s a new guild and it is currently earning influence at a rate that means that I will not have unlocked the guild bank before the expansion launches. I know influence is being scrapped but it’s currently not very clear what upgrades and stuff I will be able to unlock under the new system. I don’t need it fast. I’m totally happy to accumulate favour/whatever at a snail’s pace but it would be irksome if there was no way at all for me to gradually upgrade the guild at least to get a bank and a guild hall.
In the medium term I am hoping to persuade my very lovely wife to play, and thus double the size of the guild, but she is still suffering from a terrible N***rwinter hangover so it might take a month or two.
Is there a server status page or similar for the game?
Somewhere we can quickly check if there are any known problems at the server end of things?
The reason I ask is that the other evening there were some connection problems after the big update and, being new, I was trying to work out whether the problem was at my end or not. I eventually worked it out from Twitter/Facebook comments.
I hope you didn’t take my post as mean spirited in any way.
Not at all, not even in the slightest. Just don’t call me a moron – I’d hate that ;p
Never really been enamoured with underwater combat in any game. I find it a bit of a daft concept. However, if adding a skill or two to the bar makes it easier/quicker then so much the better.
I’m even newer. First toon is lvl 50. And I’ve been mostly avoiding underwater combat for this very reason. Maybe I should investigate all those blatantly obvious empty skill boxes although I’m not sure a fire elemental will be too happy at being summoned underwater …. (cough, cough)…
hahahahaha. Oh, the naivete, so refreshing. To still have hope that elementalists have a decent underwater elite… Enjoy your whirlpool my friend.
If I was a proper elementalist I’d just move the water out of the way and walk. Getting my robes wet is just so darned demeaning. It makes me feel like one of those common people.
It was a few months, I believe, after launch before I realized you could make much more money selling your loot items on the TP than to the vendors. That’s not so bad, but the next one was embarrassing: It was even longer before I realized you could add skills to your underwater skill bar. I spent much time swimming/fighting with nothing but a heal skill on the utility side down there.
I’m sure there are more….
Oh god, I am fairly new to the game, just finished my first 80 yesterday and I was fighting with only the harpoon gun underwater for all this time. Every fight took so long and was so boring. Thanks for the info.

Haters are indeed “gonna hate” and the anonymity of t’Internet amplifies that.
Nothing you can say or do will change them and the one thing they all have in common is that they are trying to get a reaction from you. So don’t give ’em one. Ignore and/or report them and move on and console yourself that one day they might reap what they sow.
I’d demote them and take their privileges off them. Then ask them what they would like to happen next.
But do remember than none of this is real. If they are friends in RL then that takes priority.
Well, thanks to my new-found knowledge about the value of materials my imaginary worldly wealth has rocketed into double figures. Woo hoo! I’m rich. RICH! I even splashed out on a 15 slot bag so that’s 2 QOL improvements – more inventory space and guilt-free map travel.
Thanks again.
(Aye – I tried to reply to your PM but the system says I have to wait 2 days due to spam control. Not sure how replying to a message could ever constitute spam but there you go.)
Thanks all. A definite consensus there. The Mystic Forge was something I had not even noticed and, yes, I’ve been diligently gathering and salvaging materials but not doing anything with them. I think I might be too new to sell at the TP just now but that will change soon enough.
You’ll be amused to know that although new to this game I’m certainly not new to GW1, having accumulated thousands of hours over several years (stopped in about 2009) so I’m now in the somewhat ridiculous position of running around GW2 sporting the GWAMM title whilst fumbling all those confusing Elementalist skills and being generally inept. Maybe I should stow the title until I feel I deserve it.
As for the guild there is no grand plan. It said it cost 1 gold and I thought “Hey. I’ve got 1 gold….”.
I’ll probably join a guild of old fat drunkards eventually but I want to learn the game my way first.
Hi Folks
First post. Been playing free for a few weeks and have just shelled out for the expansion. I have a couple of newbie questions that I’m sure will have been answered lots of times before but I have not been able to find them in the search or on the Wiki
First, I’ve had a few weapons and equipment that cannot be sold or salvaged. I know from the wiki that this applies to stuff bought with karma and gold (plus some others) but my question is: What else can I do with that stuff? Do I really have to just discard it? Discarding stuff goes against every gaming bone in my body hehe.
Second, a more general one. I’ve just dinged level 45 and I’m not really accumulating any gold. I spent my first gold piece on making a guild (yeah, OK, a bit frivolous) and my remaining cash is hovering at around 1 gold. Is this normal or am I missing something obvious? Apart from the guild I am not really spending any coins other than on map teleporting and it’s getting to the stage where I’m opting to run around rather than spend a paltry few coins on map travel. It’s not really a problem but I can’t help think I must be overlooking a source of income. I should add that I am 100% solo at present, and am likely to remain that way for most of my gaming time.
TL,DR :
1. Is there anything I can do with unsalvageable, unsellable equipment other than discard it?
2. What is the main income source for toons whilst levelling solo?
Oh, and I’ve played many games across many years but performing a daft dance to entertain a cow is a first for me. I might have to try it in RL….
