How many missed the beta that had the portal?

i got the email but had no link to click so i was unable to play
What link? If you got the email and had the beta slot appear in your character selection screen, then you would have been able to play. The email was just scheduling info and directions and not needed in any way for access. All you had to do was scroll to the end of your character slots, select the beta one, and create a character in it, then click the play beta button.
To the OP: I missed the beta test, not because of time constraints, but because my portal didn’t work as advertised. I didn’t get a beta slot even though I had two portals, and this happened to many other people. So while I have some sympathy for your plight, it’s along the lines of “I’m sorry it turned out the test was during hours bad for you, but it was bound to happen to a significant number of players because there is no time that is good for everyone.” The real sadness goes out to others like me who could have tested and provided feedback except for a major glitch in the “guaranteed” access mechanism.
Scroll down to the blurbs part, and read it in rows. If you do that it is Mesmer, Guardian, Necromancer … exactly what we’ve seen, see? Then Ranger, Ele, Warrior, Thief, Engineer.
Engineer being the farthest from completion as of last public info, it makes sense it would be at the end.
This doesn’t mean they will hold to the order on that page, but for the first third of the reveals it’s held up.
This is excellent feedback imo, I’d love to see more thoughtful analyses like this.
The BLTP won’t come up. I suspect this is because you don’t want us selling the items we’ve picked up. But, I recommend putting out a dialog box that says that (for beta).
Well, it is in the FAQ:
“Why can’t I access certain game features from my beta character?
To keep our live game healthy while we do our tests, beta characters are restricted from certain game features. You will be unable to access PvP, WvW, the Black Lion Trading Post, and some other features from your beta character."
Well at least someone who posted in this thread did get in … I fear I was not that person, though. Maybe next time. I would have loved to give feedback! I watched a guildie stream the first session and I noted a vast improvement to the Mastery UI from what we saw in the stress test. However, it still looks like you have to almost click randomly on it to figure it out and actually apply the points once earned and xp’d up.
I’ll try to get a first hand feel for it if/when I do get into a beta (and I remain hopeful that the way into the next one will be eased for those of us who never got our “guaranteed” invite for this one).
Here’s a thread where you can see lots of looks. Warning, it will take you a long time to go through it.
I am under the impression there will be lower sections and getting killed is because you are falling out of the beta map area. I could be wrong, clearly there’s a lot more explorable area in this beta than there was in the stress test and it might include the verticality.
I have a friend streaming that I’ve watched since my own access got borked. Ten minutes from the end of the first time block and she’s just this moment gained the “ding” to her first glider point, so level ups aren’t coming as thick and fast as they did in stress. If that persists than unlocking the exploration masteries in HoT will take a solid amount of time.
People who filed tickets about it on the weekend did get replies and even some curative efforts in some cases. I’d wager they are now flooded with tickets from people that didn’t realize until the beta started that their portals were inoperative.
I understand that crap happens and I’m more sad than anything. I’m definitely not angry. However, I think this might be a PR issue for the company so I do hope they’ll do something to make up for it. Not because we “deserve” a beta slot, but because we acted in reliance on the promise by farming for portals and because a dropped item failed to do what it was designed to do.
Adding all those affected to the next closed beta test invite list, if there is one, seems the right thing to do.
I want your support people! Mine haven’t replied since yesterday, let alone sent me anything in game.
I know there are some beta keys that can be given separately from the portals, so I wonder why ANet hasn’t offered those to the players affected by this glitch. Possibly they can’t for technical reasons.
In game? Ok, I’ll do that. Le sigh.
I like it on Charr. In all Shadow Abyss my Ele looks ready to join a biker gang. Though I’m sticking to Shadow Assassin in amber tones for her usual outfit.
It depends on profession. Warrior gets no “bend” at all, Thief gets a lovely green-chain trail on S/P 3, and I’m told Ranger looks really good using it.

Yes, as I recall from Revenant discussions by devs, the swap puts you at 50% no matter what percent you began at. It’s part of the moment to moment tactics.
I agree that the two current Legends available don’t synergize terribly well. I found Jalis much handier and stayed in it for most of the stress test. But there should be two or three more Legends coming that will hopefully better work together.
I didn’t delete my Revenant from the stress test and the slot still vanished. An invite to one does not perpetuate to the next. (Though perhaps it should for those bugged out of today’s beta despite having portals).
I guess I don’t get to play the beta. My last mail from Support was yesterday when they said they needed to investigate further.
Maybe it’ll be fixed by the third time block. I can’t play the middle one, I’ll be doing Tuesday errands with my husband.
Or maybe they can’t fix it and they have enough testers for today’s purposes so it’s not a priority for them … in which case it might be nice (not at all required, of course) for those bugged out of participation, and who could have helped out during today’s test, to be invited to the next one regardless of any RNG requirements.
It starts in 3 minutes, so no one really knows. Though those who got in during the glitch report no revamped trait lines.
Hi,
How can you tell if you have a slot of not? I have a portal but no email received from AN
Go to your character select screen and scroll to the far right of your slots. If you have a slot, it will be in addition to however many you have, and will have “BETA” in a little green triangle on one corner.
First character ever. Well, I made him, then 4 others in rapid succession to save names, then I went back and remade him to my intended design. But the other 4 also all got deleted and remade later. He’s the only one with a headstart first day birthday, the others had to wait a day.
I’d think there’d be many more people without the beta slot if looting it on a newer alt nixed the slot.
The scheduled start is in 42 minutes. Rev your engines! (Those who have working portals).
That sounds very odd, Zudet. I do seem to have the same account-wide mails on my alts -except- the portal invite is only on the alt that looted it. However, he’s also my “main,” my first created and most played alt, and he has the in-game letter invite.
The timing has nothing to do with whether we have our slots yet, though. Except if we don’t get them by the first test window, and that’s the only test window we can make, then there’s going to be some sadness.
I’ve had a ticket sporadically active since Saturday morning. No luck yet.
They said that folks without portals could still get email invites via the newsletter. Though if you haven’t got it yet, I wouldn’t expect you’ll suddenly get it in the next few minutes.
Heck, there are a bunch of us who did get portals that don’t have access. It just didn’t activate for us.
And here I thought Support still had two hours to come through for me and get me my beta slot …. grrrrrr … feeling so frustrated!
Yeah, possibly they haven’t fully integrated the non-human voices so they don’t want us testing with other races.
Traits and skills will all use the new Hero Points. You’ll pick “lines” of skills, such as Meditations. I’d suggest not spending on utilities now unless you actively need them for immediate play.
I am extra sad because someone is actually now streaming a Revenant in SW, so it looks like those with slots can at least do character creation and play, though she can’t get to the HoT areas.
I’ve watched a bit and she’s stuck in SW, not doing the new HoT zone events. So maybe it’s open for character creation and vanilla play but not yet in the actual test.
If my beta slot had shown up yet I’d check on that.
… how? It doesn’t start for 2 hours.
Have you checked in Users>YourName>My Documents>Guild Wars 2>Screens? That’s where they go now, separate from wherever you have GW2 installed.
That sylvari dress has never been available to players. My ’vari player friends have been yearning for it since launch. (I also play ’varis, four of them, but have more been mildly interested in that dress than outright yearning, as to me the skirt looks too big and heavy).
As an added check, I’ll tell you it starts in just over 3 hours from this post.
I’ve just updated my ticket as I remain beta slotless. I hope you get in, Zudet! You at least got a comment that they thought you’d have the invite in time. If you make it, make sure to test the heck out of things
Though in the stress test I was all set to report bugs and I only found one real one (having to do with problems with a Revenant doing a spirit leap down a slope); the mushroom unlock turned out to be player error. They might have things polished enough that most testers can’t break things.
Check this thread https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Beta-Email/first#post5098661 as there are a few of us that have not gotten the “guaranteed” invitation thus far.
The question is not if you got the email, but whether a beta slot has been added at the right end of your character slots on the character select screen. If you have the slot, you don’t need the email. If you have the email but not the slot, you’re still hosed.
I’m guessing/hoping they’ll announce the time frame at E3 in June, though since they aren’t supposed to commit to a date until their game systems are mostly ready, and they want our beta feedback on those, that might be a tad early for them to lock in a date.
Though I still think it’ll be at the end of August since that’s the 3rd anniversary of launch and is a reasonable amount of time for them to finalize the announced systems.
Hmm, no new mails to me. Sill no slot. We’ll see by tomorrow, I guess! It’s more than six hours, though, there are breaks in between so I think it’s more like ten hours. I can be at the first session, not the second, and will need to prevail on my husband’s good will to attend the third. So I sure hope this is fixed before 2:30 pm Eastern tomorrow.
If not, one of my guildies got hers so at least someone from my guild will be in there helping the test.
Proud? I’m pleased to have some neat things, including meta-event rewards from LS episodes long gone. I’m an avowed pack rat, after all, with quite a bit of Skritt in me.
But to be proud I’ll look to the RP I’ve woven with my guildmates in the past 3 years (we started pre-beta via forum RP). I have a whole stable of alts with their own personalities, histories, and ongoing tales. I’ve written short stories and poems, I’ve even done some art though it’s horribly done compared to what I could do twenty years ago. All you artists out there, don’t stop drawing, your hands will forget how >< I’ve made friends and met them RL, I’ve helped new players, I’ve even helped veterans who were in despair at the recent LS achieves. I’ve contributed constructively to CDI’s. Back in the first Beta Weekend I convened a gathering of RPers to test what the game offered in RP and from the feedback we gave to ANet we got custom emotes and limited “audible” range of /say and /em implemented by the second Beta Weekend.
Those are things that give me pride.
They’re continuing to work on the issue and will get back to me once they’ve investigated more. I included a link to this thread in my last response to them and requested they help the others from the thread who lack the beta slot as well, so hopefully something nice will happen for all of us.
I was sort of thinking out loud
I tend to choose trait lines based on my alt’s preferred weapons and we don’t yet know if Rev underwater weapons will be included in traiting, or if there will be any correlative value.
I think my response mostly sprang from thinking you had to choose your legends on land and wouldn’t be able to swap them underwater without doing it manually, and then I realized the legends fill the utilities so maybe they’d swap automatically, and I meandered on from there.
So a revenant would have to retrait every time his or head goes underwater? Or would this be like the alternate utility-set we get when we swim? It still seems like it would be hard to be decently traited if your equipped legends completely change underwater.
What came in the collector’s edition was a tiny sampler. Like, six two-minute snippets and if that’s an exaggeration, it’s not one by much. Since the soundtrack was my biggest impetus to buying the physical copy, I was a bit sad.
The four disk set was sold by a company so rife with bad practices that I was driven to my only time in my life condoning of digital piracy. I would still not have pirated it myself, but I really can’t blame anyone who does. Soule might be a great composer (I find the newer stuff by Diemer superior) but supporting his company is not recommended. Not that you can, he’s severed his links to ANet.
If you’re loaded with cash and willing to use EBay, check there. The cd’s might be available that way.
I keep losing track of who I’ve posted in here, so here’s a bunch of mine. I left out the ones that have no mix and match aspects such as my T3 ‘vari guardian. Some of these don’t have a lot of mixing, but all of them have some.
Engineer: Aetherblade Helmet (not shown)/Shoulder/Jerkin: Emblazoned Gloves, Zho’s Leggings, Predatory Boots
Mesmer(’vari): Gas Mask, Shoulders hidden, Aetherblade Vest, Apostle Wraps, Ascalonian Performer Pants, Aurora Shoes
Thief: Various hats, Buccaneer Shoulders, Scout’s Coat, Prowler Gloves, Viper’s Leggings, Mist Walker Boots (best hats are the starter hood and the tricorn)
Necro (Asura): Skull Masque, Exalted Mantle, Phoenix Vest, Luminescent Gloves, Phoenix Pants, Phoenix Shoes
Mesmer (’vari): Aetherblade Goggles, Masquerade Shoulders/Chest/Gloves/Boots, Stately Leggings
Necro (Human): Council Ministry Circlet, Stately Epaulets, Illustrious Doublet, Winged Gloves, Illustrious Breeches, Winged Boots
Mesmer (Human): (Hat/Shoulders/Gloves hidden), Ascalonian Performer Chest/Pants, Diviner Boots (Usually dyed red, also I have a Trickster-based set for her)
Guardian: Head/Shoulders/Gloves hidden, Heritage Warplate, Chain Legs, Worn Scale Boots (goal was to look like a tshirt and slacks if you squint and ignore metal gleams)
Warrior: Magnus Left Eye Patch, Banded Pauldrons, Heavy Plate Chest/Gauntlets/Legguards, Splint Greaves
Elementalist: Invoker’s Helm/Shoulders/Coat/Leggings, Seer Gloves, Student Shoes (she usually wears the Shadow Assassin outfit but this is what’s under it)
Necro (’vari): Orchid Helm/Shoulders/Coat, Profane Gloves, Dryad Leggings, Snapdragon Boots
I’ll list dyes if requested but this is already a wall’o’text.
Have you guys sent a message to gaile or made a thread, because that is seriously messed up if you farmed for hours and didn’t even get the invite, even though you got the portal y’know.
Make a thread about it.

We have in fact done so, it got moved to the Support forum at https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Beta-Email/first#post5097825
I don’t know if it’s a “lot” of people since I only know of myself, Morfedel, and Zudet having this problem. But anyone having the issue is bad, and I’d feel that way even if I weren’t one of them.
If my slot never appears (as of this writing I still don’t have it, I just checked), I guess I’ll be cheering from the sidelines and watching streamers as if I hadn’t gotten the portal at all.
Since the devs have outright said that it will, yes, I do think so.
Since the initial response everyone has to this is “you have to scroll to the end of your character slots,” I thought I’d document that I’ve done so, along with the shot of my portals and in-game mail. It is my only account, other than my linked GW1 account. My task bar blurred out the bottom part but it says “16 of 17 character slots in use.” The empty slot is one I’ve owned for a while as I always keep an empty slot to play with character creation or make temporary RP alts.
I’m still wondering what department/category in ANet’s support is best suited to checking why some accounts that have portals have not received the beta slot. I’d be happy to request my ticket be forwarded to the right people.
If they didn’t announce it publicly then people invited might not get the word as to the date. Certainly not everyone invited is reliably getting emails from the HoT newsletter. Also you’d get a ton of tinfoilhatters claiming the portals were lies, there is no beta. There’s no better, more central way to make sure everyone invited knows when to show up than to put it on the official site.
Danikat is right as well, those not in the beta will still want to know when they’ll be able to see information from it.
It is a US federal holiday today, Memorial Day. However, private businesses almost all continue business as normal today (and retailers have huge sales so you know they’re working!).
Support does work all the time. They’ve done miraculous things for me in the past. Sadly, they seem unable to help here, as I am in the same boat as the OP. I submitted my ticket Saturday and got a response the same day, confirming I’m on the mailing list but not confirming that my account is flagged for beta. They told me to wait a few hours, so I did, but the next morning I still had no slot or email. I posted a followup yesterday, and got:
“Please note that the Support Team is unable to assure you that you will participate in the next Beta test as the invitation is required to access once the event starts. However, if you received the Portal to the Heart of Maguuma and subscribed to the Heart of Thorns newsletter, you might still receive an invitation to participate in the closed beta test.”
That “might” concerns me, well, mightily. Though I do understand that for something not in their control they can’t make any promises (my clients frequently got testy when I wouldn’t promise we were going to win the trial, but a lawyer knows better than to say anything is 100%
), I’d hope the correct word is “should.”
Since, y’know, the portal item says it’s a guaranteed slot, ANet employees have posted on these forums saying it’s guaranteed, I have an in-game mail saying I’m invited …
I submitted my ticket to the Account Support people, figuring that was the closest fit even though they do work on the surrounding login and billing systems, not on the game itself. Does anyone have a better idea for a category for this?
Otoh running jokes have turned into more than just jokes in several MMO’s, including this one.

Eek, that sounds bad. At least you’ve received it. I have no beta slot or email (and I routinely do get the HoT emails) although I have two portals. Support tells me that I “might” still get an invitation, and an invitation is required for access, and they don’t have the ability to look at my account to see if it’s flagged for the beta.
“Might?” I sure thought those portals were a guarantee.
It could still happen. There’s another full day before it’s verging on too late!

Once again, we are starting in the same position. We have all been told, far in advance, that we need the skill challenge unlocks to progress in the new system, and that any we have by the time the new system comes will count.
Let’s assume the new system shows up on June 30 (totally made up date for purposes of this discussion). That is five weeks from now. You can a) take time during the five weeks to gather your 65 challenges or b) wait until the system debuts and then begin gathering them. The time it takes you to gather them will not be any different whether you do it now or later.
You seem to believe that tons of PvE players have all the skills already done. Why? As I’ve mentioned before, of my 14 80’s, all leveled via PvE, most all of the levels gained via map exploration, only 2 have world completion. Most of them had less than 30 challenges done when ANet announced these changes. In the many weeks since the announcement, I have spent time on each alt gathering more challenges, so now they are all at 100 (except one guy at 78 or so, but I’m working on him).
That time spent gathering challenges only happened because of the new system and because I chose not to wait to the last minute to be ready. Having alts at 100 done isn’t a byproduct of my normal play. I’d wager plenty of PvEers never bothered getting all the skill challenges done and have been gathering them in reliance on this announcement just as you could have been doing.
So you feel that people who have gone to the effort of doing the challenges, either as part of their game play or as a special extra task, should have all that effort undone simply because you haven’t yet done the effort yourself despite plenty of notice? Are you one of those people who can’t stand someone else having nice stuff, but it’s great when you have it because you can show off and be “better” than them? (I’m not saying you are, just that the attitude of “take it away from other people so they don’t have more than me” smacks of that ilk).
Moreover, eventually everyone who wants the unlocks will do all the challenges. You are asking to wreck a lot of people’s enjoyment of the game when we’ll all be equal just a month or two later anyway. Or are you volunteering to have your unlocks, wardrobe skins, map completion, wvw ranks, and levels reset every time a new player joins the game, because you’ll have had a chance to do more than him or her?
It’s an MMO. No one will ever be at exactly the same point as everyone else. Live with it.
