If you look at the released images of the new trait system, you’ll see that it’s a circle around which you progress by spending Hero Points, each icon being a trait or other unlock. The “other” includes skins.
Hero Points will come from leveling and from doing what are currently called skill challenges, the blue chevrons on the maps.
OOH Rly?
So, there’ll be profession-only-skins? (yay)
I don’t think they’ll be profession only, though you’ll need the profession to unlock them. But who knows until we see their tooltips?
Maybe it’s just that I came from WoW to GW2, but I find the environment gorgeous and well detailed here. Not the same as in ESO, no, but I believe it’s an aesthetic choice on the part of ANet to go for a more painted, mildly impressionistic look instead of hard edges and stark contrasts.
The Tyrian landscape looks plenty real to me. Maybe since the real world is also generally a bit fuzzy to my myopic eyes, glasses notwithstanding?
I’m pretty sure that’s not licensed, though. I have a life-long policy against purchasing pirated goods. If ANet says they’re cool with someone selling the HoT logo shirts or other GW2 related items, great, I’ll snap one up in a heartbeat.
Apparently the thread in which Gaile asked for merchandise suggestions has been deleted. I’m sad, I was hoping that would lead to nifty things.

Perhaps the blood freezes before it can spatter. All that Chill. Plus it’s a shadow magic scythe, not a physical blade as far as I can tell.
I can’t begin to theorycraft the mechanics of what the Rise! minion should do, but cosmetically I like both the shadowy crows idea mentioned above (ok, it was undead crows, but I’m loving the shadow effects) and what I’ve seen in a more generally focused thread, mini Liadris (or other shadow figures).
What would they do once summoned? I’m no game designer, I leave that to others
I don’t know if they are or not, but as last weekend was touted as the “last weekend” to get them, if they’re still coming then it’s an oversight on ANet’s part.
You have to click the second unused slot to highlight it when adding a second sigil.
That armor caught my attention so completely I didn’t look at the background. Someone in Twitch chat asked if LA looked different in the distance but none of the subsequent clips on the stream showed the long view.
Here’s a thread for your reading pleasure.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-player-camera-improvements/first
At first it was hypothetical, then it turned into the camera improvements that we received, many of them based on feedback in that thread. I believe visible weapons in first person were discussed in some detail in that thread, and the possibility in this game dismissed based on technical limitations.
it works with a sword.. not so much with a scythe it just looks awkward
I reverse that. A sword just doesn’t work when it’s a giant bar of metal. A scythe that is thin like this one looks fine to me, especially as it’s made of magic, not wood and steel. Normally I am one of the heaviest detractors of oversized weapons but this fearsome scythe looks perfect to me. I can believe it’s reaching all the enemies in its aoe zone!
Don’t be so sure. In three years we have yet to get GW2 merchandise beyond a mouse pad or two. Sure there are Tshirts out there you can order but they aren’t officially licensed.
Marvels #1 Assassin
Brilliantly done!
When I add someone to my friends list I like to add a short note explaining why, be they a guild recruit, someone from the forums I promised help with something in game, a good RPer, whatever.
But I still want to see their display name. However, choosing “Set Note” as an option erases that name leaving me with a completely blank field to fill in. So I have to memorize or write down their name and retype it at the start of my note.
Would it be possible to have the name preserved in the note? If someone wants more space for their own text they can quickly highlight and delete the name, which is far simpler than typing in a sometimes complex nonsense word without reference.
They’re all on Kindle. The Kindle app is free so you don’t need a specific e-reader.
Ghosts of Ascalon
Edge of Destiny
Sea of Sorrows
All very handy for lore but imo only Sea of Sorrows comes close to being a good read on its own hook for someone not trying to learn the lore. The other two let the need to present lore with one example of each race trump the need to tell a focused story (though Ghosts at least has a straightforward treasure hunt plot).
I found it!
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Ninja-Fashion-Contest-Winners-Announced/first#post4309560
This guy took first prize, but the thread is full of people making ninja looks.
You can go underwater to attack them yourself, just make sure you have a trident or spear available first.
Darn it zenleto, now you have https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4pStVNQc4M and the Boogie Man from Nightmare Before Christmas stuck in my head.
And of course this gem from Bog Otter:

The potential
I can think of like 20 feature complaints/requests (improved death recap ui, party damage trackers, build templates, various ui improvements, ect..) that could have all been solved with simple addons in some way.
Slipping that into the middle of a lot of paragraphs isn’t going to keep people from turning this into an anti-dps-meter thread.
I like Seeker, Warder (not Warden, Warder), and Sentinel, in that order. Seeker fits best all around, Warder reflects guarding with traps, and Sentinel has a righteous feel though it might not work for this Guardian Elite and fit better for a new one down the road.
On a cosmetic point, Robert mentioned they aren’t wedded to using the little minions (totally spacing on their name, sorry) for the Rise ability. I saw someone in another thread comment that it would be cool if it made shadows instead.
How about a bunch of little Liadri’s? The effect fits right in.
We’ve seen three specs revealed and have six to go, so we’re not yet down to a “few.” Though if one really wants a break bar, one might have a reasonable complaint if Revenant got it on top of all the other new shinies.
It was PoI, not ReadyUp, and it just ended (they’re doing PvP 101 now).
Next week will be ReadyUp and won’t be a specialization but something else they believe we’ll really want to see.
I like the idea of a touch of reverb!
I however disagree as to the scythe. Usually I prefer weapons to look “real.” In this case, though, it’s a magical part of a magical shroud and to me the size is perfect. If it were thick as a tree trunk I’d be less pleased but the proportions seem very nice to me.
I agree. I think it’s the only starter-area crafting town that gets shut down at all for events, let alone so often. Worse, it’s an asura-based event in a sylvari zone.
Though that could be deliberate, to make sylvari players dislike the asura, thus feeding into the fact that the races’ first meeting went so horribly wrong for the sylvari …. nah. It’s just a pesky interruption to what should be a useful location for new crafters and people wanting bank access.
again replace everywhere you see Demon with Dragon, and you have GW2’s Dragon Hunter. they are the same theme across universes, just as Guardians in GW2 are the same theme as Paladins in World of Warcraft just in different universes and different names,,,
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/demon-hunter/ here is the Diablo 3 Demon Hunter. Same concept. people could say all classes hunt demons right? right??
I see your point there, but I’d argue that internal consistency trumps what other games do. While I’m not raging mad about the “Dragonhunter” name or even the concept that there could be a dedicated fanatically driven anti-dragon set of fighters, I do feel it doesn’t flow with the rest of this game’s design. As others have said repeatedly in this thread, it makes the profession part of a faction, when no profession thus far has been created to espouse specific viewpoints.
ANet does like to turn things on their heads and not get stuck in a rut just because it’s always been that way, but they also have a cohesive overall feel to the game and “Dragonhunter” breaks that cohesion for a lot of people.
Maybe if they’d been developing story threads all along to show this growing fanaticism it might be different. And who knows, maybe there will be development in the HoT story along those lines, though that would mean getting the buildup after the reveal since the profession will be available right away, before people see the narrative.
If they go in the order of the blurbs on https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ then after the rumored break for non-spec news next week you should see Druid soon … but Thief not for quite a while. Thief is the next one I really care about myself, so I share your pain at the wait, assuming they do stick to the order seen on that page
Well, this guy isn’t Canthan in the slightest, but I was going for as close to Tshirt and slacks as I could get in heavy armor. If you squint it could look like a modern martial artist’s get up (it needs Shadow Abyss Dye to disguise the fact that it’s heavy armor). There was someone in one of the show-your-armor threads that did an absolutely superb samurai look, too.

Hurray for those who got it! (I wasn’t one). Gaile, perhaps since it’s only ten people you could send a forum pm to them and not just rely on email? It might help someone realize they won.
I never knew anything about Silent Hill but there was a brilliant thread on the WoW forums where someone trying to knock loose writer’s block set up a Zork-like adventure “You Awaken in Razor Hill” and let the story go based on other thread posters’ input. There was a pyramid head in there that was horrifying.
I just hope they can give the Reaper that sense of inexorable doom they want, as opposed to people just kvetching about how annoying the chill is (see the Orr mobs that get so peskily in the way of just running to orichalcum, per some people). Or the stabby-cat Mordrem that can diaf.
I’m trying to figure out the armor pieces from the video. It’s hard with dull dark colors on a dark though burning background. But it does seem likely they’ll put the Grenth hood back in the gem store …
Also your activities and influence scrolls etc go to the guild you are repping. So make sure if you join a guild you don’t intend to 100% rep that they won’t kick you out for that. Rep requirements should be stated at the start for new members.
Be very careful when swapping guilds. The “leave guild” button is in a super-easy-to-click-by-mistake spot and there is no confirmation. If you’re the only person in your personal storage guild and you leave the guild, everything you put in the guild bank is gone forever, as are all the resources you put into building up the guild perks.
That’s not new. Right after the beta stress test some players had the armor unlocked. It’s a bug and has been reported (along with some people being unhappy that the bugged players get use of the armor and some players in the armor being smug about it).
Hopefully those who have it through the bug will have it removed, if ANet has the ability to undo unlocks which I think they’ve said they can’t when people mistakenly unlock rather than sell an item. That is, hopefully it will be removed if it turns out that you only get the skins through some difficult and prestigious set of in-game tasks. If it’s as easy to collect as any other level 80 skin, oh well, some people lucked out, cheers to them imo.
I’m concerned about a long windup needing large groups of foes for full effect. I don’t see it as a bad thing, just not my general play style. I know that any slower skills I have are just about completely useless when I have others around me because the enemies die before my shot even lands (I’m staring at you, Thief Shortbow 2). And I seem to face one or two mobs far more often than groups of five or more when I’m fighting on my own. So this spec may not meet my personal needs. Which is why it’s good there are so many professions and spec versions thereof! Because some people are going to revel in this.
Tomorrow’s live stream will help a lot, if it’s run like the DH ReadyUp was. That one made DH look far more viable for how I play than the blog/video had.
This is not me saying I think the Reaper is lame, bad, or in any way uncool. I’m just unsure it will fit into how I play. I still have a necromancer with 100 skill challenges done just in case!
And therein lies a problem for the ages. How do we both portray an complex world and tell good stories? I’d love some examples of these, since I can’t recall and movies, shows, or books in which there wasn’t a character focus and by which the plot was not character centric.
I think ANet did a fairly good job of portraying a complex world in the base game. Hundreds of dynamic events each with their own characters doing something relevant to their environment and character. But it didn’t make for very good storytelling.
Actually there are books done as “braided novels,” where you keep moving from one pov to the next over a cast of dozens to see a widespread impact of a world changing event. The one that most springs to mind for me at this moment is Lucifer’s Hammer by Niven and Pournelle. Also John Brunner’s extrapolative novels based on “if this goes on” (Stand on Zanzibar for human overpopulation, The Sheep Look Up for pollution, etc) tend to hop around the globe scene to scene touching on the lives of a lot of people.
An MMO lets people hop all over the world to see events and NPC dialogues. Having a band of NPC heroes to help focus what’s going on isn’t necessarily a bad thing (as) such. But in a tale of global disaster, I feel the weight should lie in how the disaster affects the band, not how the band affects the world. We should see the various races rallying, each in their own way; we should see schisms, and epic gatherings (such as the Pact Fleet, short lived though it was), victories and defeats that involve the world. When LA burned, why were NPCs in DR still fretting that the caravan from LA was late? Why weren’t Ministers calling for installation of air defenses and a lockdown on who comes through the Asura gate? Why weren’t Norns who helped in the citizen rescue boasting of their deeds? (Ok, limited game resources for new dialogues and voice acting, yeah yeah yeah).
The biconics should be reacting to the events. Perhaps they could have reasons to be where the high level decisions are being made, and thus us with them, but they shouldn’t be the spunky gang of youths who personally save us all.
Disclaimer: I speak as someone who’s always loved playing sidekicks and subordinates, who’s always hated “monty haul” gaming, who doesn’t want to be the godlike center of attention. So having a set of “chosen ones” just feels uncomfortable to me. Those who like games like Exalted probably appreciate being on the spunky team of heroes more than I do.
Ahh that makes more sense. Thank you.
Well then, so you won’t know if they added you back without asking them? Hmm well okay.
Sure you will. Anyone who you have friended is on your main friend list. Anyone who has friended you is on your followers list. They are separate sets that can contain overlap but neither list requires being on the other. So if you want to know who’s added you, look at your followers list, that’s them.
Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

As no price has been set, it’s possible the only ones paying as much for HoT as for the original game are those who got the original on sale for ten bucks.
They’ve said they like the idea of build templates (which this would be the gear part of) but it’s not part of what they’re working on for HoT. So maybe in a feature patch further down the road?
I have a couple. My first time through the PS, on my first main, a Thief. A number of guildies came to help with the step that happens in Lyssa’s temple (Ossuary, I think). None of us had done it, there weren’t guides yet. We fought our way along epically. We got up to the area where you go inside and down a ramp, but first there are mobs up on the platform at the edge of the giant ring of the temple.
I rolled for initiative right off the edge, fell to my death 1/2 way down the cliff. As it was my instance, and no one could get to me, everyone had to jump and die so we could restart. I was soooo embarrassed ….
On another note, much later we were assembling for a guild bounty hunt. Our guildmaster said anyone wanting in his group should /w him. So I hit some random keys in a hurry, and sent him “JURT” — which he promptly relayed to the whole guild, who proceeded to rag on me for that nonsense word nonstop. Now they can make me fall into a giggle fit any time by just saying that to me.
What they said in the 4 hour live stream was that with the numbers as they currently are (and these are subject to change, so the exact numbers could differ, perhaps significantly), leveling to 80 will get you enough for three trait lines and doing 65 skill challenges will add enough to do a full unlock of all the core stuff. You will still need more challenges done to get the elite spec once HoT comes out. Since the core change is coming sooner than HoT, there will be some time to adjust and to go gather more skill challenges before you need them for your elite.
Hopefully that “65” figure applies to traits + skills, not only to traits. The live stream’s focus was on traits, so I could see them only telling us what’s needed for those, even though the hero points will also be used to buy skill lines.
Something I’ve noticed: You get a very nice x/189 skill challenges tracker on your world map. However, the 189 reflects only those challenges that count to world completion. If you do Dry Top/SW challenges and/or WvW challenges, you should have credit for more of them than show on your world map. I directly tested this as I have been cycling through alts getting them first to 65, then 100 challenges, and the counter did not change when I did a Dry Top skill point or when I did two SW skill points. I didn’t check WvW as I am leaving that for super last and only if I find myself with no other challenges source while still in need of points.
Not that I’ve seen, Flakkenmarsh. The best I manage is to check any thread I’ve posted in (it has a little white swirly arrow on the left-side icon by the thread), and occasionally to open my profile and go through my recent posts to see what else has been said. It would be tedious to do it all the time, so I’m glad I’m not obsessed with these things and I do let things slide on following up on a conversation.
Though that icon does tell you if someone posted after you. Greyed out, there’s no new posts you haven’t seen in the thread. Black, with a white swirl arrow, there’s new posts and it’s a thread you said something in, so maaaaybe your comments have garnered a direct response.
Egad, if I need 60 more on top of my 65 …. /weeps … I’ve just been pushing one of each profession to 100 challenges done, in the hope that will cover all core + elite. That’ll leave me 25 shy, darn it. I still have to get Ranger and Ele to 100, then raise bonus alts to 100, and 25 more per alt on top of that will take quite a while especially as I’ll have used up the low hanging fruit.
At least Orr has a ton of skill challenges per zone. Even if they do take more work to get to.
In Silverwastes you can buy a loot bag from the Camp Resolve vendor’s second tab (bottom item) for 10 crests and just under 1 silver. Maybe 10% of those bags (wild estimate) contain T6 mats.
Is it there now? They did rework the Hero Panel a bit but it’s still the second tab down on the panel, the hexagon overlapping a square, then you click “Weapon Skills” at the top.
I don’t expect a blog post until tomorrow. They always seem to drop them on Thursdays.
Time to do something else… I hear the weather is improving outside.. I may even venture out to that scary place.
Oh, you mean this old MMO?
It’s got daily updates
I think there’s false advertising in that MMO. No monthly fee? That’s a flat out lie.
-snip-
You’ve misunderstood the OP. He doesn’t want to get afk credit, he wants to wait safely until there is an event to do, participate fully in the event, then afk to study some more. He’s not one of the problem children.
Hmm. I’ve never made a Legendary. But the wiki page says you have the correct four items. Maybe try putting them in in the order of the full material list on the wiki, so Mastery, Fortune, Kudzu, then the Leaf?
edit: Wow, that got solved fast! Good to know the stacking bug affects this, I’ll tell my guildies.
