The wings are fun, and suit at least three of my alts for various reasons. I’m glad Dulfy’s video included that higher pitched twinkle sound when you use Lean Techniques to go faster in the glide. It doesn’t include the nifty hearts scatter you can get by strafing or slaloming, though.

As to the weapons, I’m personally meh on them. They don’t look functional enough. Someone in Map asked “if you had to get one, which one would it be?” and I figured the shield as it looks like it could block stuff and has the most visible glow pulse of the lot (I don’t normally need glow pulses on my gear; this one adds to the weapon’s visual impact enough to be good imo). None of the edged items look at all dangerous. So I’ll keep my two tickets on hand for whatever the next set may be.

I’ve found the best way is to run at the pad at a 45 degree angle instead of trying to get to the straight ahead upper ledge. You’re more likely to end up on top, and as a bonus be already aimed at the aoe boost ball.

I have enough alts that I’ve played most of the permutations (still have some Asura and Charr ones to do, some day). I do make choices based on a character’s personality. And I played the 1-20 chapters in beta such that I knew enough of the story to tweak it to the core parts of my main’s RP. His story choices were absolutely dead on for him; for everyone else they were more “what haven’t I seen yet?”

All I know is, when that day comes, we’ll all die. Or else bow down to our new golem overlords.

(That said, you have proposed some fun things. Even though anything that isn’t fully consensual by players will get complaints about disruption to their regular game play).

Donari.5237

Rhyav, I agree. The problem lies in those things that drop from mobs in a localized area that you don’t need to enter in regular game play. Like the rassenfrassen Tengu. Other than one HP and one ley-line to another HP, nothing hauls you up to the Tengu ledges as part of working on the map. So if the Feather doesn’t drop in the first few while you’re doing HP things, you pretty much have to go up there to mindlessly kill the birds until one coughs up the loot.

Dust Mites are another thing. I suppose I will be running around in SW getting Coarse Sand soon, so I’ll tag any Mites I can, but generally I have to go out of my way to attack them. After 20 minutes in a DT sandstorm slaughtering Mites got me nothing, I felt rather frustrated since that’s not a map I frequent.

Gem Store question

It’s gone because they removed it from the store, which means you cannot buy it. A lot of gem store items get removed now and then; many of them do come back, but not always or often. The rule of thumb is to buy something you like during the first week it is on the store, if you can. Or accept that you might miss the chance to have it.

DS gives awesome experience, just make sure to join a squad a few minutes before map reset (every two hours on the half hour, even or odd hours depending on your time zone) and then taxi in. Pick a lane, stick with the squad in that lane, you’ll get oodles of xp.

VB is easier — go there when daylight hits, pick an outpost (Pale Reavers, Nobles, Itzel, Pact Camp, or, um, the guys in the NW) and follow the event chain until that outpost is done, then mop up what other outposts need it. If your map wants to organize for T4 night, help out! A guildie and I did that today, made it to T4 and a coat box. I’m xp capped in HoT now but she got around half the xp needed for Advanced Gliding. Along with enormous amounts of loot (I salvaged enough luck to buy 10 red lanterns for my guild hall).

Ways to farm transmutation charges?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

The PvE way is to make an alt, explore the 6 cities for one charge per city, delete the alt, repeat. I mean, if you need to farm them. I have occasionally explored cities on alts to get the charges, but they were real alts, not throwaways. Regular game play and occasional bl chest openings do me well enough for charge supply, at least now that I use outfits for rapid look changes.

I share your pain. I’m going to try to figure out where to find tigers in DS because the VB ones just won’t share their claws. I had a similar issue with Silencing Down Feather for Bo; I had to camp a tiny little plateau of Tengu for a very long time to get it, when other collection items had practically sprung into my bags. It’s RNG and it can really hit with a vengeance on these things.

I’m still not getting the Tempest warhorn piece off of Dust Mites, either, be they in VB, SW, or DT.

They didn’t mention it per se, but it was quite visible in the testing arena where the dev was demonstrating creatures for us. It’s probably another time-saving re-use of an effect — or maybe when they made the vampire do that to victims, they thought it was so cool they adapted it to the shoulders effect, or vice versa? Pure speculation on my part.

I believe Narrrz is referring to the fact that there were no fireball changes in the notes, in fact. Some time ago, to reduce the effects glare in combat, fireball was turned into a little mote you fling at the foe. After much feedback as to players not liking it, it remains small even after this big patch. Hence some cynicism as to the point in offering feedback.

I have no strong opinion on the matter myself, though I agree it’s hardly impressive to cast now. I’m simply helping clarify it for you, Daddicus.

I’d love for guild members to get personalized sub-instances in the halls (though hmm, could be an issue with each player getting up to five personal places, and what happens to your stuff if the guild boots you?).

However I’d love even more to get true personal housing that doesn’t depend on guild membership, that is easy to decorate on a personal budget, and preferably can be saved per alt so my rich nobleman gets his CM style estate, my angry street rat gets her hovel, my hermit sylvari mesmer gets his flowering string of pods high in the Tree (with more detail than current “house” pods in the Grove), etc.

Golden City and Battle for Tarir are awesome, all the holiday music keeps me loving being in the place it’s playing …

I’m going to guess that the lighting in that shot is affecting it. The leading edge of the glider is an undyeable white with dyeable lines on it (though they will always have a yellow/orange edge no matter what dye you use). But when I glide down to the flax farm, my gold and blue changes to very green, even on the white part, and the wing tips get a lot darker.

I’d prefer wings with some nominal nod to the need for a lifting surface. If they make spinal blades a glider, at least that has the glow to suggest Asuran levitation tech.

Would you go for wyvern-style wings? Those have a lot of holes in the membranes but are still more than just bare-bones struts.

(I will admit I’d not mind an invisible glider so we can soar like Superman. But in that case, I can imagine it has plenty of lift surface, it’s just totally see-through ).

Maybe you can check the LFG forum below for a guild offering guild hall arena access and enough people that you can find sparring partners often enough to satisfy the training itch.

Suggestions: Glider Skins [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

I think part of the problem is that glider dye acts like outfit dye rather than like armor dye. That is, you get one set of dye channels that apply the chosen dyes to all items in the set that accept dyeing on that character, rather than saving the choices per item. They elected to create just two dye channels for gliders (possibly for technical reasons?) and thus when they design a dyeable glider they have limited areas that can accept dyes and must have some persistent colors in order to have details show.

Sometimes they pick good channel combinations, sometimes not, though “good” is highly subjective here.

Maybe there’s an item link that will do it? I did notice that it didn’t show up in my glider skins until I bought it, though the Dulfy video had shown me what it did well enough. I think sometimes they don’t put a locked version in the Hero Panel until a while after the item is released but it does eventually show up. Likely they have different teams responsible for that. (I could be misremembering the delay effect).

I’ve played through the whole story once, and done starter parts of it on a few alts. There are in fact some cutscenes with camera pans where your character is visibly standing there.

Whether you are facing the right way, or in a reasonable spot relative to the NPC’s, is more luck of the draw though

Suggestion: Let our Characters sing Songs!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I like this idea. The only problem I see with it is how to a) have others hear what you’re singing and b) avoid some really horrendous song choices. I mean, every music has someone who likes it, but I’d be miffed if someone started howling out heavy metal lyrics in my ear while I was banking. So ANet would have to give a prepared list of songs, I guess, that fit into the world (the Chicken song and Bash the Dragon come to mind as examples).

(A) is the bigger issue, though. All the sound files in the game are loaded into the client. If you want someone else to hear your character singing, not just you, then whatever song you pick has to get shoved into their copy of the game. I imagine hackers could drop in malware that way, or at the very least everyone’s disk space would get hogged by all the other players tossing songs at them.

[Sugg] Option: Convert Skin to Charge

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I’ve seen a number of requests to have any skin purchase come with a transmutation charge, so as to save on bank storage space when waiting for the perfect alt to put a skin on.

I have a tweak to the idea, so as to avoid complications with tradeable skins: Add an option to a skin to convert it to a transmutation charge. If it’s locked, this unlocks it. If already unlocked, this just deletes the skin from inventory and adds a transmutation charge to the account. You don’t get the charge just for purchasing the skin, you have to actively convert it.

Thus you can still sell tradeable skins, and the buyer can then convert them to a charge along with an unlock. This does not take away from the need to gather charges as currently implemented, given that the skin gives you one free use anyway.

If the counter is “then people won’t buy more bank space,” well .. I -can’t- buy more bank space as I am maxed, and what I have is clogged with skins unlocked in wardrobe but still offering a use without burning a charge. If it was just a handful I’d toss them. But I calculated the value of all the charges I’d be destroying doing that and it was too large to do it in good conscience.

But I think you’re loading your own preconception based on the word into your expectation on the glider with that name. Check out http://hua.umf.maine.edu/China/Chinese_kites/pages/093_Chinese_Kites.html for something called a Phoenix Kite that has a peakitten flavor rather than flames (and google for “Phoenix Kite” which is how I found that — tons of images show that this glider is squarely in the kite tradition of kites called “Phoenix.” Though yes, some are more red/fire themed).

[Suggestion] Reorganize collection categories

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zomaarwat, I went in to check the options. Looks like I was just missing the Alphabetical that is in fact there, but the only completion sorts are by tier or by total, with the less-done ones at the bottom. I agree that having either a top-down sort or a “hide completed” toggle would help tremendously.

That looks like a useful reorganization. But one thing that makes it handy is that it is alphabetical. I may be missing a sorting option (and shall facepalm if so), but when I’m looking to see how I’m doing on various machined weapons as I work towards profession elite weapons, I would vastly prefer scrolling to the “M” area over the current scanning a random jumble that re-sorts as the amount of completion changes in each collection.

If you explore around and join the event chains, you’ll get fistfuls of xp and have your remaining 37% in no time. The first tier of a mastery always goes fast. The chains in Verdant Brink start atop the little plateau near the entry wp, at Faren’s Flyer WP in the sw, in the Itzel village in the ne near the raid, in the central area at the Pact Encampment, and in a cave in the nw reached by some steep steps north of Faren’s across a chasm. They all begin when day begins. You can track when that will be by using http://dulfy.net/2015/11/09/gw2-hot-maps-timer-famme/

Good luck!

Once your xp bar fills up, click the little icon at its right end to open your mastery panel. Click at the right end of the Gliding 1 line to train that mastery. Then pick another mastery from the 4 available types to work on. Probably you’ll want Itzel Lore Tier 1 to get the bouncing mushrooms mastery. You click on the line you want to train and all your xp goes to that one; you can freely swap between them as you wish, though it makes most sense to get all the way through a tier instead of dithering back and forth and never unlocking anything.

I’m glad you were able to brute force it. Likely you ran into the bug where he spawns a target crystal in the wall where you can’t reach it. When things work properly, you kite a little mob along so as to spread out the death circles the boss is tossing at you, kill the mob to get the color buff, walk through a fragile glass donut, then avoid taking any damage while you get to the shielded pylon. Hug it until it is fragile, hit it to destroy it, that eats a large hunk of boss health. Sometimes the mechanics switch up but that is the bulk of the fight and if you quickly wreck each pylon as it shows up the boss dies relatively quickly. I’m sorry if the pylons bugged on you

Can't name pet Kralkatorrik

Donari.5237

Cant name pets or characters after NPCs unless its a super generic name

Then how did the OP get in the habit of naming pets after Elder Dragons? Did s/he misspell them before?

Probably there is a string of letters in the name that is a bad word in some language so the whole thing gets censored. But the censor doesn’t check everything that can trigger it so sometimes people get the name through. See certain account names in this forum that you can see posting but when you quote them you get Kitten.1234.

Or, my standard example, the reason I had to turn off the filter way back when: In RP I used the word “reputation.” And it got censored. Because if you take the re and the ation off you get a bad Spanish word. /eyeroll

Maybe they did make Kralky’s name unusable, but then why allow the others the OP must have habitually used?

Suggestion Com Marker usable on map

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I think there is an issue with LOS, given that their patch notes said they fixed a bug that was having object markers persist once no one in the squad could see them. What you might want instead is an additional function where you can mark the map and have the mark show up on the squad members’ maps but not out in the world, beyond the base blue star personal point.

I don’t think the design is childish, by the way. I think it is elegant. The rough shape of the symbols match the painterly aesthetic of the game, and the variety of shapes are meant to be clearly different from each other so even colorblind players can distinguish them, as explained on the live stream that revealed squad markers. A great deal of careful thought went into the symbols and how to blend them into the game while keeping them distinctive.

If they were cartoon kitten heads with little tongues sticking out (like the tattoo “options” in BnS creation) then I’d agree they were childish.

I don’t know if there’s a way to not see enemy pet names. Personally, if I was worried about being attacked, I’d want that nice red string of letters over the head of anything that could jump on me.

"Taken" names

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

As much as I’d like to have some names I have used in past games, I don’t think an inactive person (who may become active at some point in the future) would be happy returning to Guild Wars 2 and find his characters are generically renamed to a default with letters and numbers. I’d be disappointed if that were to happen to me if I left and returned.

Just sayin’, my idea would avoid that. Notice the 9267 at the end of my name? If I were to be inactive for 2 years then come back, that would be added to the end of the names of all my characters (it also ignores character limit). Then when I log back on, I’m mailed a number of name change kits corresponding to the number of characters I have, so I can change all their names back.

Back to what? If someone else has taken the name, you can’t get it back.

Blighted Depths one: From Mellagan’s WP run north off the cliff and glide down over the bridge. There are a lot of Mordrem in there, so you may want to be ready to u-turn back to the bridge the moment the PoI pops. While you’re there, the mastery point is reached by gliding along the east side of the grove area and curving north until you see a series of stair-step updrafts.

Khisanth covered the other one well enough. Check the timer at http://dulfy.net/2015/11/09/gw2-hot-maps-timer-famme/ to see when the Night Bosses are up, that’s when you want to get to a chopper. Since the axe master is a meanie, if no one’s attacking him try to glide over the poi and then well away from that island before he can tag you with his one-shot marker.

Which light armor profession should I choose?

in Players Helping Players

Donari.5237

From my PvE standpoint I will say Necro, because then you can make a Reaper. Reaper is so viscerally satisfying and so tanky tough that my first Reaper is my do-all-the-HoT metas alt, she’s got full HoT map exploration when the rest of my alts must settle for completing VB to work on the Elite weapon, and my second Reaper was the first alt I tomed to 80 just to get a quick duplicate of my beta character. Also Necro gets a utility for perma 25% speed boost, which helps with exploration.

However, for world bosses and running around maps (if you don’t care so much about run speed or are willing to use a focus offhand), Mesmer with a GS has superb range with instant hits. Necro staff 1 is so slow other people kill your target before you hit. Mesmer also has a lot of get-away skills, can enter stealth and/or drop distracting clones while zipping off to the next point of exploration, almost thief like in this. Chronomancer is trickier to play than Reaper, once you’re to that point. To judge by forum comments it also just took a solid nerf kick to a core feature. I have yet to master the F5 use on it — I believe that requires you to preemptively hit it before using other skills and then hit it again, all in a couple of seconds, and I just don’t think that fast. My mesmer is my fractals runner, btw, I like her utility in there.

Which brings me to Ele. Super squishy, lots of finger dancing to get to the right attune, and having to remember 20 things your weapons will do in the heat of the moment (some of them the exact opposite on the same key, where in this configuration you charge to the enemy when you press 3, and in that one you roll backwards). Many swear by Ele, more power to them, but I consider it one of the trickiest professions to play well and definitely not terribly relaxing. If you can play it well, you will be highly versatile and very useful to your friends.

But Reaper is soooo fun. Maybe you can go to the Mist lobby with one of each Light and try out the skills on the golems as a test for what you like doing.

I didn’t think it was the 50th post, I thought it was any post starting a new page. I did have a weird hang yesterday when trying to load page 3 of a thread. It spun so much that I decided to post my own thoughts and see if they loaded after whoever caused the bug had fixed it. To my surprise, I not only ended up on page 4 but had to post my own forum bug breaking top-of-page comment.

Which today was deleted as “off topic.” I guess I was too creative in my comment explaining I was fixing the bug. I get bored of short “fixing forum bug” posts (by me, I pass no judgment on others) and I like to mention the bug during a creative riff on the overall theme of the thread. This confuses the mods, it seems I am not mad it was deleted, and in fact heartened that they’ve changed their message to strongly reassure that it is in no way held against my account that I posted something off topic, they only wanted to explain the reason for deletion. But it means extra work clearing out my inbox, so I’ll confine myself to the boring obvious post in the future.

Until such time as they are able to miraculously get a new system written from scratch to look very much like this one and able to call up all the old posts from everyone, anyway

I don’t have anything terribly insightful to add just now, as I am groggy with the lateness of the hour, other than the obvious gliding is FUN comment.

I did note, though, that despite the warnings that we would no longer be able to deploy our gliders when topping out a bouncing mushroom arc, I have seen no change in this. I hold the space bar, the wings come out, I turn in midair to glide as per usual. For instance, in the frantic pod run after a Mouth Kill, I head to the Northern place with a million pods in it, where we updraft then mushroom up to the green bamboo area. The mushroom drops me on a lower ledge that I then have to jump up off of, but if I deploy the glider at the top I can get those few extra feet to save the time of the jump. It worked just fine this evening.

Brew of the Month … I did that in WoW’s first year of it. I find myself hoping there will be a twist, or a really nifty reward (in WoW I think we got a pink drake flying mount? it’s been a while). You have a few days left in this month to figure out and announce an upgrade to the reward before you incur the wrath of people who didn’t sign up and therefore will finish later than those who started in January … me, I’ve signed up.

And thank you for not tying the Dragonball achieves to a meta reward. Generally I would like a meta reward but in this particular case I’m happy that I feel no pressure to get the achieves. I’ll work on them, and they’re all doable if I play .. 100 games? I figured based on my rate so far of healing gained per game. But if I miss getting them done, I’m not miffed because I didn’t miss out on “the big thing.”

How does ley-line gliding work?

Note they are unidirectional. You can see the direction they are flowing and that is the direction they’ll carry you.
