I don’t think the average age for the game is much more than that.
Considering this thread is filled with parents discussing getting this game for their child, I’d be inclined to disagree with your average age of GW2 players being not much more than 10 comment. Do you mean the ESRB rating? I honestly don’t know anyone under the age of 21 that plays this game.

Yes and if they can remove the insta-death, that would be great. Make big falls put you in downed state.
I mean, we got shoot, burned, slashed, etc, etc and we can’t take a little fall?
One could argue that a 50ft+ fall would do considerably more damage than being burned, slashed, or shot (depending on where the arrow/bullet hits). In most cases a fall from that height is in fact lethal whereas people survive being shot, burned, and slashed on a somewhat regular basis.

They were empty 9 months ago and they’re empty now. FA High population server.
I play FA and I don’t notice the emptiness. Heck I was in Malchor’s literally yesterday and at one point someone pinged in map for help with a skill point and when I WP’d over there to help, 4 other people had shown up to help him as well. That’s five people including me that saw his message and WP’d over. In Orr! And there were no temple events going on! That doesn’t even include the people that saw the message and didn’t help or that didn’t see the message at all.
Might not seem like a lot, but for a zone that is characteristically devoid of human interaction, 5 responders to a /map request is pretty impressive. I think anyway.
I probably see the least amount of people in places like Dredgehaunt or Lornar’s. They really don’t give good incentive to go back to past zones outside of wanting to get 100% on alts. I don’t know how they can drive people to mid-level zones outside of LS stuff. But they need to figure something out.

The problem with large group content and unique rewards is that for many people they either a) don’t want to play with large groups b) specifically came to GW2 because they couldn’t stand large group play c) don’t have the time to dedicate to a raid or d) don’t know enough people to even get a group together to attempt a raid.
I raided for years. I’m done with it. The only way I could see raids working in GW2 is if all rewards you got from the raid were obtainable on the solo level as well— which seems to be the opposite of what raid-supporters want. If there was a 25man instance that was difficult and required a lot of coordination but did not have any unique rewards then there would be no problem.
The problem comes in when the raiders want unique rewards to differentiate themselves from the non raiders (which is understandable). But what if someone wants that cool new staff skin, but uh oh, in order to get it you need to get together with 24 other people, get on a voice chat program, and dedicate hours out of your day. It would undo everything they are trying to accomplish with GW2. They already had a backlash with Ascended gear and Teq.
I play GW2 because I don’t want to play the traditional MMO (trinity, raids, quest givers, gear treadmill, discriminating rewards system).
I don’t believe for a second that the people who want raids simply want it for the added skill/difficulty. They want raiding for the phat lootz to show off to others who aren’t able to coordinate and complete a raid. I bet you if they released a 25man raid but all of the rewards you could get from it could also be obtained through laurels + gold, that raid would be a ghost town after the first week.

I’m curious about the argument people are making about “knowing your class and how to play”. Forget crafting and look at the other methods of ‘power-leveling’ in GW2. What exactly does running the champ train in Queensdale teach about your class, besides how to wp around quickly and press 1? What does a WvW karma train teach you about your class mechanics, besides how important it is to tag things for credit? What does most open world content teach you, since most of it is facerolled?
Its an empty argument IMO. None of the quicker ways to level teach you anything about mechanics, crafting included.
At the very least the trains will teach you what your 1-5 skills do and likely which utility skills increase speed. In crafting you have no idea about anything except 1 is auto attack.

Regarding the Gladiator Title: Do activities even progress it?
If your image is accurate then it sounds like there is no problem. You can’t rank up Gladiator title from Activities, only through actual PvP.
I like it, there’s really no reason for you not to get Glory. Whether you win in PvP or a race, you still are getting glory.
And for the record, you can rank up to Gladiator by running around in circles and simply finishing matches. You don’t have to win, you don’t even have to engage anyone, you just need to finish. I’d rather see someone obtain Gladiator (even though it seems to not be possible) through mini-games than to see someone have the Gladiator title that just stood around doing nothing and only hurt their team.

Respawn rates are the sole reason I dislike Orr greatly. Like Sourde said, you get absolutely no feeling of accomplishment. I help the Vigil fight off some big attack, then help them retake a neighboring outpost, high-five everyone, step out for a glass of water, come back and everyone is dead and we’re overrun again. Sometimes I like RP but it is completely immersion breaking when they respawn THAT fast. I mean, an hour before the enemy tries to retake the area would be acceptable. Then you wouldn’t see a sea of contested WPs constantly.
I mean, seriously, I’m one of the few people that actually tries to uncontest WPs in Orr for the benefit of everyone but as soon as I get to the next WP, the previous one I cleared is contested again. What the heck was the idea there?

If a precursor sold for substantially more than the amount of gold it takes (on average) to create via the mystic forge then people would take opportunity of the market and forge them for profit.
I think you can pretty much assume that the TP price is roughly also the price for forging (perhaps even less because some are dropped as loot).
I disagree. Someone that gets Dusk or Dawn after 20g in the MF would almost certainly price it high for profit. Price is dictated by the market. Whether it cost you 100g to get it or 1000g you will price it at what will sell it. If someone was honestly trying to get Dusk, for example, in order to sell it, and it cost him 1200g of GSs in the forge, he would be wasting not only his time but his deposit because no one would buy it at that price and he would have to take it down and repost it for another deposit.

If you want to participate in events than do that. There are plenty of classes that can solo nearly all content that includes “group content” , if you know how to play the game. GW2 is not a so called “community” based game like other games. It doesn’t take a full community or group to get stuff done, if you have not noticed that yet lol. Just because you can not find a group doesn’t mean you are not able to do events or that the game is bad in general.
Worst. Advice. Ever.
A good bit of GW2 Group Events are un-soloable by all but specific class builds, and even then, only a small % of players have the patience to whittle away a champion’s health while simultaneously trying not to die, and that’s assuming you are fighting a champion 1v1 and not one that summons Veterans or other mobs, or there is an AoE field that does damage (Orr statues), or there is a time limit.
Just disregard everything that slurpey said, he is quite incorrect.
That isn’t to say there aren’t some Group Events that an be solo’d because there definitely are, but to pretty much tell someone to just do the group content solo because some classes can solo group content is just plain bad advice.

There are only 4 way’s I can think of to make money.
Also world boss farming/ champ train farming (preferably Frostgorge) seem to bring in reasonable income plus chances at decent drops with good MF. Got 3 exotics from an hour of champ farming the other day. Nothing spectacular I think they all sold for around 3g/ea, but still that’s another 9g I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Yea it’s all relative. Everybody could have 1 in every stat and it would still be fine because everyone is the same. In sPvP it boils down to:
1) Classes — some are better against others (rock, paper, scissors), know your strengths and weaknesses.
2) Traits/Gear stat set-up.
3) Who is a better player.
4) How to look rad.
That’s it. Stats mean nothing.

All the precursors on the TP are ones that people don’t want, i.e. they value them less than you, so they price them to sell, which will always be slightly less than the average (key word here) cost to make one.
Except people who get precursors they don’t want know that plenty of people really really really want them and will price them accordingly. They will price it higher than average. Unless there’s a goodguy out there who sees 675g as lowest seller and thinks to himself “nah, I don’t even want this thing, I value it far less than that, I’m putting it up for 500g”. Most people will see lowest seller, and drop the price by 1c. Never underestimate the power of gold.

Here is my char w/ over 6000+ hours of play time
Dude… That’s 10.34 hours a day. Non-stop since release…
Not that unreasonable if you account for AFK time.
But the game boots you after 15 minutes of inactivity, unless it’s still counting even though you’re on character selection screen?
I think the timer might still run if you get AFK booted but don’t select “OK” on the inactivity message that pops up. I know that sometimes I go AFK for an entire day and when I get back on everyone thinks I was pulling an all nighter because on guild list it still shows me as logged in plus my location (compared to just your name when you are on character screen). Once I confirm that inactivity message, it updates me as logged out to character select.

And you get that magical money from…?
Look, it might be great for you to go spam dungeons and all, but No one wants to do anything in this game. friends quit, guild is dead, joined a mega guild, it feels pretty dead, only option is to pug and that usually ends up taking 5x as long to get the same rewards. Isn’t the gold drop only once per day per dungeon? You can’t catch up to the player-greed fueled tp flip inflation at that pace. Plus, I never get any nice drops from dungeons, nor in general, nor ever… so yeah… I’ll just go grind all day, get my one yellow a month and I’ll certainly catch up!… Really?
Which still accentuates the point that the paying player gets things faster by ignoring all these time sinks whether designed or incidental.
Dungeon gold is per path per day. So think of how many dungeon paths there are and multiply that by at least 1g and that’s what you could make each day minimum, not including drops you might get.
I’m not crazy, I know no one will run every dungeon path every day, that would be insane. But I can tell you that plenty of people run AC (all 3 paths) and CoF (p1 and p2) pretty regularly, as well as HoTW and TA. Heck just the AC and CoF paths will net you 5g+/day and they can be completed very quickly.
I disagree with your comment about no one wanting to do anything in this game. I’ve yet to have trouble finding a group to run any of the paths I just mentioned. I hit up gw2lfg or the LFG tool or my guild and I’m in within minutes. Even PUGs these days are expert at running these paths because they are so common. I finish faster with PUGs sometimes than with my guild team. Run world bosses, Orr temples, literally anything will net you something of value. It sounds like you just do nothing and complain you aren’t making money, or you tried to play the TP and failed at it. If you honestly cared enough about getting whatever it is you want (I can only assume precursor), then you would run dungeons regularly to get it. If you want it, but don’t want it that badly, then who cares?

Grinding mats (t6 mats/lodestones) is practically impossible. Your time is better served running dungeons for the gold to buy them.
I do have to say, ever since they made it so you are guaranteed gold after a dungeon run, plus whatever valuables you may pick up, there really is no excuse for not being able to make money. If you really really really want something that costs a lot of gold, you can work toward getting it. It becomes a bit of a farm/grind, but it isn’t impossible. Not by a long shot.

Because that’s the only thing that could ever possibly differentiate the two from each other. :L
Typically these threads turn into “GW1 had X class, or GW1 did skills like this, or GW1 was better because you could do X, I miss X from GW1, I just wish they would bring back X, or GW1 never had X and it was the greatest game ever. i wish GW2 was more like GW1, etc.”

when the hell was there a dungeon?
There was one last year related to the Mad King Tower. This year was the one located in Charr city land that was short. A Dungeon by traditional definition? No but something like it nonetheless.
Oh that wasn’t the dungeon that was just an intro to the story.
Last year you actually had a dungeon to go and fight the Mad King. This year we had an “encounter” that I called a dungeon. The first was simply an intro, but once you completed the Meta this year you could go back into the same instance as the intro story and fight the Blood Prince. <— that was the dungeon I was referring to.

As for the race specific mounts I have thought on that before as well and came to these ideas:
Human – Moa’s
Norn – Dolyaks
Charr – a Charr bike! (like a mini version of their tank)
Asura – I can’t remember what I had here, maybe a golem or something…
Sylvari – Wolves (their wolves like the ranger class gets)
Human — Moas = laaaaame
Norn — Dolyak’s make sense
Charr — I would allow a Charr vehicle
Asura — golems are slower than anything lol
Sylvari — those wolves could never hold up a Sylvari, would just look weird.

End-game is maybe a 3 for me. What I need in an end-game is something I can do at my own pace whenever I have time. I don’t want to feel forced to do something that could take hours to complete and must be done in one sitting (or multiple hours-long sessions). I don’t have the luxury of that kind of time anymore. I just need activities that will keep my occupied and are enjoyable (WvW, sPvP, leveling alts, etc.)
My GW2 playing ebbs and flows, some weeks I’m on every day, other weeks I only get on three or four times briefly. It depends on what other games I’m playing. GW2 is the perfect game for someone like me.

It really is hard to feel sympathy for people who continuously throw money into the mystic toilet and then get on the forums to complain about how much money they’ve lost and have nothing to show for it.
That’s akin to people going to Vegas, blowing 10Gs and then getting upset with the casino that they have nothing to show for it (except probably being completely wasted from the free drinks).
I’ve personally spent at least 300g in the toilet as well, but I realize I did it to myself. After the first 50g you start to realize that the odds probably aren’t that great. After the first 100g you definitely start to realize that maybe spending money in the toilet was a bad idea, especially if you come to the forums and read the horror stories.
After your first 200g you lose that hope that maybe you will be that lucky guy and that the RNG really is that bad.
Anything over 200g and you should really just look in the mirror and shake your head in shame rather than post here.
If you really really want your precursor, you have a 100% guaranteed way to obtain it currently. Buy it from the TP. Yes, prices are high, yes it sucks, but it is guaranteed.

If you just stacked and DPS’d Teq, you will lose. Every time.
So you’re telling me, after Teq is stunned, that people don’t stack and DPS race him down? I said “in the end” for a reason.
And WoW bosses have a thing called mechanics. It makes fights more interesting.
So….what you’re saying…is that if at any point there is DPS, that now that whole fight boils down to stack and DPS? Really? That means every boss ever boils down to DPS, in any game. You realize that’s how you kill things right? By damaging them? So disregard every other bit of the encounter?
No offense, but your precious WoW bosses can be stripped down to DPS checks too if you look at it that way. DPS DPS DPS, spam heal spam heal, move to get out of enemy AoE/some kind of special attack, DPS DPS DPS. What’s the difference? I played WoW for 5 years as a healer, I can tell you that 95% of my time was spent staring at health bars with the occasional left or right strafe to avoid some choreographed attack. Uh oh everyone here comes that big AoE, run away!! Ok, it’s done, back to DPS.

What we need is more S&M themed gear, I think we can all agree on that.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Many would agree, many wouldn’t. All I can say is that I’ve written/read posts exactly like this in every MMO I’ve played.
The fact you equate content to AP grind leads me to believe you aren’t really talking about boring content, but rather boring achievements to chase (which I would agree—but they are in fact optional). The new dungeons they’ve added certainly aren’t boring to me, nor is the entire concept of this Toxic tower thing. I find it actually pretty cool and completely reasonable for a 2-week content release.
I think 3-4 hours of sitting down grinding out the AP is more accurate for these releases, but considering that the majority of GW2 players don’t have or want the time to sit down for 3-4 hours, that 3-4 hours will likely be split up into 30min here, 15min there, and for most it actually spreads out pretty close to that 2-week mark (especially if you do PvP, WvW, dungeons, etc regularly). So much so that people actually complain that 2-weeks isn’t enough time to complete the achievements.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Easier said than done my friend. Trust me…
I’m glad we’re friends ;P
I’m an AP chaser personally as well. I’ve grinded (ground?) monotonous content in GW2 for arguably minimal gain. But you know what? I’ve ground (that doesn’t sound right) monotonous content in literally every MMO I’ve ever played. Ever. I’ve always been that kind of guy. I come from the UO and then AC era where you would just grind. I played Lineage2 for years, that has to be the definition of grindy games. I’m used to it, I find it mentally soothing and rewarding for some reason. I also burned out on it to some degree which is why GW2 appeals to me. I can log on, grind something for an hour or two, then play something else and not have to worry about falling too far behind. Especially gear-wise.
Back in those days when you would see someone max level with the best stuff in the game you would automatically know that they put some serious time into it. Nowadays in MMOs everything feels like it is handed to you. In GW2 you can see someone with the best stuff and maybe you would think they worked hard for it, or maybe you would think they just bought all of it or maybe they just got lucky with RNG. AP is the only unit of measure for grinding tolerance in GW2. That guy has 15,000 AP??? Dang, he must grind like crazy!
That being said, you will never, ever hear me complain about any game being too grindy as I have a high tolerance for it and actively seek it out. Some grinds are just stupid like the candy corn example I gave. I’m smart enough to know when a grind simply isn’t worth the effort, and hopefully others are as well. But legendary weapons grind, level grind, Ascended gear grind, pffft bring it on I eat pieces of kitten like that for breakfast.
What I don’t understand are the people who feel compelled to grind for something that is arguably inconsequential to progress and then complain that the game is too grindy. If you feel compelled to grind, then aren’t you the type of person who is actively seeking out the grinding? AP means nothing to people who don’t like/care to grind.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Rangers get trench coats or leather straps. Those are your options. I’m generally disappointed with the Medium armor selection/variety. Most of them just seem to be slight variations of the same thing.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Event completion in general is the fastest way to level up. If you can find a good place to farm events then that is better than anything else. It becomes a self-imposed grind at that point, but it is effective. Personally I wouldn’t be able to just hit those off-shoots all day just to level, I would need some kind of break in the monotony.
Also if there is no zerg, you will not be able to complete the events.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
In the end, even these are “stack and DPS!” bosses.
Saying Tequatl is just a “stack and DPS!” boss is like saying most WoW bosses are “spread out and DPS!” bosses…

Just because something is there, dangling in front of you like a carrot, doesn’t mean you need to go after it.
This! I wish everyone understood this concept. Every bit of grind in this game is optional. At no point do you need to grind AP, or candy corn, or literally anything else to experience content. If you choose to go after that carrot then whatever go for it, but don’t go after an optional carrot and then remark about how grindy it is. You chose to grind when you didn’t have to!
It’s like with this Halloween patch and the ridiculous candy corn requirements for some of the items, most notably the 20 slot bag. There was an uproar about how horribly grindy it was to get that 20 slot bag, so many people were upset. I guarantee you that almost everyone that posted about how horribly grindy it was didn’t even grind the candy corn. It was proven it was cheaper to buy a bag on the TP with the same slot number. So what’s the problem? That there’s a grindy option to obtain an item? So what? You could grind for hours to get it, or you can buy an equal item on the TP instantly. Yet it didn’t stop people from whining about it as though they were forced to do it.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
I’d actually somewhat agree with the OP. Its designed for people too busy to grind an MMO, and for kids too young to be attracted to a typical one.
Bingo.
The game was made for older gamers who want a casual, light-hearted experience AND for said gamer’s children.
ANet is trying to bypass the 20-somethings entirely(perhaps they feel that crowd is too hard to please or too flighty idk) and grab the “bookend” market. It’s an interesting tactic actually.
I and every one of my 20-something friends play this game and enjoy it. I think the average age of our guild is something like 28-30 yrs old. I’m pretty sure Anet designed a game to be enjoyed by everyone except hardcore players. Age is irrelevant.

snip
I do wonder if I’m the only one that feels this. You are not alone. I feel exactly the same way.
I always feel like I am missing out on content. I did take a 10 month “vacation” away from the game and there is no way I can ever experience that lost content or win those rewards. And now, whenever I do log in (nearly every day) I feel like I have to do the LS content or miss out on it and that means I don’t spend time with my online friends, my daughter (who plays this game), doing dungeons, character progressing. I do not like the feeling that to do these other things I have to pay the “cost” of not doing LS stuff. It is really turning me off to this game.
Do you mean you feel forced to do the LS meta achievement or miss out? I somewhat agree with what you’re saying feeling forced to do LS content but only as someone that wants the AP. If you’re talking simply about experiencing the story (for this release the solo story instance and then the 5man instance), that can be experienced literally in one sitting.
You may not be able to grind out all of the achievement points in one sitting, but you can 100% experience the actual Story of it.
If by “having to do the LS content” you strictly mean completing every possible achievement, then honestly that’s on you. At no point do you need to get every achievement to “experience” the LS. You just need to do the story stuff. Whether you kill 5 toxic mobs or 200 it’s the same experience minus AP. I really like the fact they added daily categories that go towards the LS meta as well, because now you 100% can get the meta without having to do a bunch of grinding. I think one of yesterday’s was to touch an obelisk. That was almost as easy as daily Laurel vendor, and I’m pretty sure doing that obelisk daily goes toward the meta.

It’s more like a Massively Multi-player Online? I thought RPG meant role-playing game, as in you take on the role of the character you are playing. I didn’t realize that RPG implied you are required to role play.
I consider Fallout a Role-Playing Game as I’m sure most would, but you could also play the game without Role-Playing (i.e. name your character “Buttzlol” with a giant head, crazy big eyes, giant protruding nose, and then go around killing everyone for the lolz of it). Doesn’t change the fact it is still a Role-playing Game. How is GW2 any different?

UO segregated their world back in the day. If your skills weren’t high enough for some areas, you would be destroyed by the monsters there. Instead of leveling each skill individually to max level, we’ve evolved into leveling the character to max level and the skills/stats automatically increase with your level.
Personally I liked leveling up each individual skill, but that doesn’t change the fact that some areas were literally impossible unless your skills were a certain level, so really what’s the difference? I think most consider UO to be the start of the modern day MMORPG genre so you may want to reconsider your stance, OP, because you sound completely ignorant.
Could you give us some examples of games in the genre that has 100% of the content complete-able by a completely new level 1/starter stats character?

While I do agree that holiday content shouldn’t stick around 24/7, I don’t see any harm with it recurring every year, but with new stuff to do. For example, Halloween 2013 could have been a repeat of 2012, minus the Mad King bursting out through the fountain. The scavenger hunt? Tassi can send you to re-visit the ghosts, and the Ascent to Madness dungeon could also have been done via a “flashback”:
Player: “So, tell me the story of how we defeated Mad King Thorn in his own realm in years past.”
Tassi: “Now that’s quite a tale! After we forced the Mad King back into the Mad Realm, we sent adventurers through to beat him into submission…” [Replay the Ascent to Madness dungeon]With the added Bloody Prince chapter, it would feel like Halloween got bigger and better every year, instead of now wondering which of our favourite activities won’t be coming back next year.
100% agree Halloween this year was a complete and utter disappointment compared to last year. They did the Bloody Prince stuff, but that dungeon paled in comparison with last year’s Mad King encounter. Outside of the dungeon, Halloween was nearly identical, except with less achievement opportunities, less skins, and a slightly harder, while at the same time much less rewarding, Labyrinth (which I thought was an odd way to go). I have very low expectations for Christmas. I fully expect a complete rehash of last year, but with more grinding, less skins, and less achievements.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
I don’t like drawing my weapon just because some mobs are close by.
I don’t understand this one. My character doesn’t draw his weapon unless I engage the enemy. If you’re a ranger, then put your pet on passive while running because odds are he’s engaging and putting you into combat…
